G
ood afternoon to everyone tuning in for today’s game against Southend United. They are in good form at the moment and managed to earn themselves an important win against Barrow. I’ll be asking the players to make it much harder for them this afternoon than we did for Port Vale last weekend. I want to see us win more battles all over the pitch. We needed to be mentally strong after going behind early, and to be fair, they kept going and we were still in the game. However, when we conceded the second it did feel as though the game was already slipping away from us. Following the half-time break, we responded quite well but their third effectively sealed the points. Despite the result, I didn’t feel we ever waved the white flag at any point. However, we did look like a team who are short on confidence and struggling to win games of football at the moment. It was disappointing to see the reserve fixture called off in midweek because we had a number of lads who would have benefited from getting some minutes under their belts. Sean Scannell was one of those players. James Hanson was another; he’s managed to train last week but we certainly don’t want to rush him back too soon. We’ll be monitoring them both closely and will make a call whether or not to involve them today. Someone who won’t be available is Harry Clifton after rolling his ankle last weekend. We don’t think the injury is going to keep him out too long, but this game has come around too soon for him. Regarding recruitment, I’ve been having conversations every day since last weekend. On Wednesday, in particular, it almost felt like I’d got a different job because of the amount of time I spent on the telephone trying to make something happen! Unfortunately though, nothing on that front is imminent at the moment, which is very frustrating. I know that today’s game is a very important one, but if we win, that doesn’t make us safe; nor does it mean we are relegated if we lose. There are 22 games after this one to go and lots of points still to play for. Starting today though, we have a run of games against teams in and around us. If we can pick up some positive results it will give us a far better chance of getting out of the situation we’re in now. Keep supporting the lads, Paul Hurst

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Afternoon everyone, I hope you are all well during the latest lockdown. Sometimes you run out of things to say doing these columns and certainly I’m sure some people will get fed up of hearing the same lines/excuses! All I can say is that I’m proud to be captain of this club and I genuinely believe we have the right staff and a nucleus of players to get us out of this situation. We will be giving absolute everything and totally understand the importance to fight and battle for every point. One thing I will add is that I believe there’s nothing stopping any team in this league putting three or four wins together. Hopefully for us that will be sooner rather than later!
I’M PROUD TO BE CAPTAIN OF THIS CLUB AND I GENUINELY BELIEVE WE HAVE THE RIGHT STAFF AND A NUCLEUS OF PLAYERS TO GET US OUT OF THIS SITUATION
On a side note, we are going to be tested twice weekly for Covid moving forward and I believe keeping sport going is hugely important for people’s mental health. So hopefully now, with all the procedures and precautions we have to undertake, we can keep on playing and provide at least some normality for people. Take care. Macca

HABERGHAM
New signing Sam Habergham made his debut for The Mariners at Port Vale, almost three years after his last competitive appearance. The former Lincoln City and Braintree left back missed both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons after suffering a serious knee injury, but after two operations and months of sole rehab work, the 28-year-old recently joined Town on a deal until the end of the season. Programme editor Jack Johnson spoke to Paul Hurst’s new recruit in the week. Sam, what was it like being back in action at the weekend after almost three years out? Yeah it was great to get some minutes on Saturday. Obviously it wasn’t the result that I - or the team - wanted but that’s something we need to move on from. For me, on a personal level, it was unbelievable to be back out on the pitch playing football again.
IT WAS A REALLY SUCCESSFUL PERIOD I WAS AT THE CLUB AND SOMETHING THAT I’LL ALWAYS REMEMBER. BUT ALSO SOMETHING I WANT TO REPLICATE AGAIN
It’s been well documented that you’ve been out injured for a while but what actually happened and why did it keep you out for so long? I had a knee injury and I was told initially to just rest it and it would get better. It didn’t get to where I wanted it to be, so I had to start the process again by having an operation which was a minimum of 12 months out. I then had to have another mini operation to clean my knee out and from then I’ve been building. Those are the main reasons why it’s taken such a long time.
You had a very successful spell with Lincoln City. What was it like playing in the Imps side that got to an FA Cup quarter final, won the National League and won the EFL Trophy? It was a brilliant three years there actually. It was the double promotion winning year in my first season and in my second we got in the League Two play-offs as well. So it was a really successful period I was at the club and something that I’ll always remember. But also something I want to replicate again.
It must have been difficult doing your rehab during the first lockdown. How did you manage to keep yourself motivated? Presumably you were training alone? Yeah I’ve had some brilliant support throughout the process but, as you say, for long periods I’ve had to do it on my own. You do have days when it’s really difficult. The biggest thing was often just getting to the places you needed to get to do the session, whether that was at a gym or at home. It was about starting the day right and that helped to motivate me to get it done.
Before then you had four seasons with Braintree - and your last game for them was against The Mariners in the play-offs. What can you remember about that day? I remember winning at Blundell Park in the first leg, 1-0. The next game Braintree were in front for a long period but I remember it being boiling hot, probably around 35 degrees. Right at the end of the 90 minutes, Grimsby managed to score, take it into extra time and then go on and win it as we were down to 10 men by then. It was a great day for Grimsby but a tough one for Braintree. Rumour has it that you’re not bad at taking a set piece! Are there any clips of the free kicks you’ve scored on YouTube for Town fans to check out? Yeah, absolutely! I think in the last season I got around 30 assists and scored a few goals from set pieces, so I’d definitely say it’s something I’d like to replicate again. A lot of Lincoln fans mention my goal against Torquay. We were losing at home until the last 10 minutes - it was a really big game over the Easter weekend - and I scored the CLICK HERE TO WATCH SAM’S FREE KICK VERSUS TORQUAY winner in the last five minutes.

By John Lyons, executive editor, The Football League Paper
They say you should never look beyond the next match, but it’s difficult to avoid doing so when you get cup draws for two rounds at the same time! That was the unusual situation last Monday when former England striker Peter Crouch was entrusted with both the fourth and fifth round draws of the FA Cup. The idea of the double draw was that it will help aid fixture scheduling in this incredibly congested season. In fact, both rounds are already on the horizon with the fourth pencilled in for the weekend of January 23-24 and the fifth taking place around the midweek of February 9-11. It must have been a weird sensation for the players, staff, directors and fans of all those clubs in the hat to find out who they would play in the next round – and the one after. Is it a good or bad thing? Personally, I’d prefer to have them split apart. It’s great to win a game and then have that anticipation that you could get a giant in the next round rather than have it all done and dusted beforehand. Nonetheless, if you get a potentially great draw, then you can keep on dreaming. Take National League North outfit Chorley, for example. They’ve got a tasty home tie against Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves to look forward to in round four and if, and it is a big if, they can win that one, then they could entertain holders Arsenal in the last 16.
CHORLEY WILL WELCOME TOP-FLIGHT WOLVES AFTER PUTTING OUT DERBY COUNTY That’s if the Gunners beat the winners of the delayed tie between Southampton and Shrewsbury.
Blackburn. A fourth round tie at David Moyes’ West Ham, who edged out Stockport last Monday, is one to relish.
On the other hand, League Two Crawley could have been a little luckier in the draw after their stunning giantkilling of Premier League Leeds last weekend. A trip to Bournemouth isn’t to be sniffed at, but the Red Devils would, understandably, have loved to meet top-flight opposition again.
If they win that, it’s Manchester United or Liverpool away in round five! Now there’s a juicy incentive for Moore’s men.
If they do manage to pull off another shock against the Cherries, they will face Premier League opponents in round five, with a trip to Fulham or Burnley in the offing. Darren Moore’s Doncaster are in the thick of the League One promotion race, but the FA Cup can be a welcome distraction. Rovers have been richly rewarded for their victory at Championship
11
Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe can take a break from fighting relegation from the Championship when they host Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham in round four. A trip to top-flight Everton or fellow second tier outfit Sheffield Wednesday is the prize if they can achieve a sensational upset. They say if is a small word with a big meaning and they’re certainly right on this occasion. It’s not quite the FA Cup as we know it, but, as last weekend proved, it’s still got more than a sprinkle of magic.
JAMES McKEOWN
IN THE SPOTLIGHT T
his afternoon James McKeown looks set to play his 473rd game for The Mariners and surpass Harry Wainman’s 43-year record for appearances made by a Grimsby Town goalkeeper. 31-year-old McKeown is now in his tenth season at Blundell Park after joining on a free transfer ahead of the 2011-12 campaign. Originally signed to ‘challenge’ Kenny Arthur, McKeown quickly became Rob Scott and Paul Hurst’s number one and made more than 270 appearances during the club’s five subsequent years playing in non league. His eye-catching form between the sticks twice earned him the Supporters Player of The Year award in 2012-13 and 2013-14. Following our return to the Football League in 2016, McKeown has consistently been one of the best (if not the best) goalkeepers in League Two. In 2017-18, he played a vital role in the club avoiding relegation under Michael Jolley which deservedly earned him his third Supporters Player of The Year award. He then won the award for a fourth time in 2018-19 and last season he was appointed club captain. Macca is probably the best shot stopper to play for The Mariners for a generation and, on his day, he can be unbeatable. Let’s hope the Town captain can produce a few more of those matchwinning displays before the end of the season.

In today’s notes we would like to take the opportunity to update you on some of the things we are working on. Membership – We have moved on to a new system called membership mojo which we will be making live this weekend. This will be a big improvement on the previous system with things like automated reminders and acknowledgments as well as a much better email capability. Also, members can access their own information to see membership status and it also allows them to update their contact details when they change. While we have been working on the change, we have extended memberships to the end of February for those members who have not had reminders.
MARINERS TRUST
Fan Zone – You will have seen previously that we are planning a Fan Zone in the Constitutional corner which will be open from 12pm for both home and away fans on matchdays. It will be very much family orientated with entertainment, kid’s activities, street food, bar etc. We recently asked for some help with putting together some images to bring it to life for fans and we are very grateful to Mark Hodson and Kevin Atkins for offering their services. They will have something for us to share in around 3 to 4 weeks. Realistically the work will now take place during the close season ready for the start of next season. When we are ready to start, we will be asking for volunteers to help with clearing the site, painting etc, as well as seeking help from local businesses for building materials. Working together we have the chance to make this something to be proud of. AGM – Normally we would have held our AGM by now but due to Covid this has not been possible. We are taking advice from the Football Supporters Association about how we do this remotely and also about policy and process for board election should a ballot be needed. This is being worked on now and we will be communicating the details within the next couple of weeks. Communication – Hopefully, you will have seen an improvement from us in recent weeks regarding communication with more activity on social media, improved content on the website with a Q & A section and publication of meeting minutes. This will improve further with emailing from the new membership system and we will seek to keep improving over the coming weeks. We had an informal meeting with the consortium this week and there is no doubt that fan engagement will be a very important area for them, and we will be working closely with them to identify new initiatives to achieve best practice. Juniors – We are ready to go with a new Junior Supporters Club but have held off launching due to lockdown. We are looking at how in meantime we can get our junior supporters more involved remotely with competitions and activities using technology and will publish details shortly. Ticket System – As you are probably aware the club has a new ticket system which will allow scanning on entry and ticket printing at home. As well as this it also has the functionality to do other things such as loyalty schemes, targeted offers etc and we will be working with the club to see how we can make best use for the mutual benefit of the club and supporters. We appreciate some of these things seem irrelevant in the current climate but hopefully we will be able to return to Blundell Park later this year and enjoy the benefits of these initiatives. As ever, we would be very pleased to receive ideas and comments about our activity, just email us at enquiries@marinerstrust. co.uk. Enjoy the game and UTM. The Mariners Trust Board

Mark Oxley has been The Shrimper’s outright number one since joining them from Hibernian in 2016. In his first season at Roots Hall, the stopper missed the entire second half of the campaign due to injury, but he bounced back the following year in terrific fashion, keeping 17 clean sheets and featuring 51 times throughout 2017-18. A string of stunning performances saw him crowned the Supporters’ Player of the Year as well as the Players’ Player of the Season. Oxley started his career at Rotherham United before joining Hull City. During the 2009-10 season, he played three games on loan with The Mariners. He also had loan spells with Walsall, Burton and Oldham before joining Hibs.
Vastly experienced Alan McCormack returned to Roots Hall in September after 10 years away. The 37-year-old, who previously made over 150 appearances for the club, was brought in to add a wealth of experience to a young squad. The versatile midfielder originally signed for Southend from Preston North End in January 2007 following a fruitful loan spell and made a name for himself for his tenacious and committed style of play. Signed by Charlton Athletic in 2010, the Irishman also went on to play for Swindon Town and Brentford before he gained three consecutive promotions with Luton Town and Northampton last term. If given the nod today, McCormack will certainly look to dictate the game wherever he’s asked to play.
Career: Rotherham United, Hull City, Walsall (Loan), Grimsby Town (Loan), Burton Albion (Loan), Oldham Athletic (Loan), Hibernian (Loan), Hibernian.
Career: Preston NE, Leyton Orient (Loan), Southend United (Loan), Motherwell (Loan), Southend United (Loan), Southend United, Charlton Athletic, Swindon Town , Brentford, Luton Town, Northampton Town.
Promising AFC Bournemouth midfielder Kyle Taylor has extended his loan with Southend until the end of the season. Taylor is a player that Southend boss Mark Molesley knows very well from his time as Under 21 Manager for The Cherries and he’ll be hoping the young midfielder can continue his form for the rest of the season. The 21-year-old made his professional debut for Bournemouth in 2018, coming on in the 87th minute of an FA Cup Third Round game against Wigan Athletic. A year later Taylor made his full debut, again in the FA Cup, starting in a 3-1 defeat to Brighton, before going out on loan to Forest Green last season to gain more first team experience. So far this season he’s made 12 appearances for Southend, scoring once.

SIX TOWN 1-0 SOUTHEND 1ST JANUARY 1972
OF THE BEST
vs SOUTHEND UNITED By John Kirk
of six. The other wins were against Rotherham, Brentford, Chester and Reading in this mini-golden period, and by season’s end Southend were 2nd and Town 3rd. Cambridge, who had also been promoted with us the previous season were promoted again. I wonder if this is the only time that THREE teams have had double promotions in the same seasons?
Coming into the game, Town were in sixth spot, and had had a bad couple of months. Doubtless Southend fans thought the FL were having a laugh organising a New Year’s Day game up the east coast, but Town had no hangovers, running out easy winners, with Jim Thomson, Jack Lewis, Stuart Brace and Mike Hickman doing the damage. From this game to the end of the season, McMenemy’s team lost just four games to be promoted. No prizes for guessing who went up with us... yes, Southend. Whenever promotion or relegation is “achieved” the two clubs seem to frequently be in a vice-like grip with each other. The irony of that won’t be lost on either set of supporters as we head into the second half of the season!
TOWN 4-0 SOUTHEND 4TH MAY 1997
A real sweet and sour match this. In the 90s, we seemed to be tied to Southend, and by the final game Southend were already down, and Town needed a miracle to stay up. If we beat Southend and Bradford failed to beat QPR, then Kenny Swain would have saved us from the drop! We did our part, with the four goals coming from Mendonca (2) – his final goals for the club - Nicky Southall, and Jason Lee. Unfortunately for us, Bradford beat QPR 3-0 and so we were consigned to the drop. But in every cloud, there is a silver lining, and that silver lining was the following season – all of it!
SOUTHEND 0-2 TOWN 20TH APRIL 1990
One of my most memorable games. A saunter to the Fish House for some great fish and chips, and greeted in the ground by lightning hitting one of the floodlight towers of Roots Hall which caused such KEITH ALE X ANDER a rattle on the lights that they were still rattling five minutes later! This was a big promotion match between two contenders for the top spots. Enter Big Keith. At 6 feet 4 inches and with superb control that defied description, Alexander was a threat always. Especially in this game which turned out to be one of his last before being replaced by Neil Woods. The first crucial goal fell to Town. Quite which part of Keith’s anatomy gained the vital touch I am still not sure – it might have been his posterior, or his thigh, or even his back, but when Keith turned round, to his surprise and our delight, the ball was in the back of the net! He scored the second too, and I’m not sure he knew much about that either, but on both occasions he was in the right place at the right time and sometimes that is all that is needed! At season’s end, we were both promoted.
TOWN 5-1 SOUTHEND 1ST NOVEMBER 1997
We were going well in the League Cup having beaten Oldham, Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester, and had a game with Liverpool lined up in the next round. In the league we weren’t going quite so well, but this match did us the world of good with goals from Lee Nogan (2), Jack Lester, Tommy Widdrington and Paul Groves, in a season when Grovesie played in every one of the 68 matches!
SOUTHEND 0-1 TOWN 7TH MARCH 1998
Another visit to the Fish House, another visit to Roots Hall. By this time, we had been knocked out of the League Cup by Liverpool, and the FA Cup by Leeds, but just three days after our visit to Essex we’d be playing Burnley in the AWS Shield Northern Final, with a visit to Wembley – somewhere we had never played in our history – being the prize. But first we had Southend in the ultimately more important game in the league. We ground out a single goal victory, courtesy of Daryl Clare. DARYL CL ARE
TOWN 1-0 SOUTHEND 9TH MARCH 1991
Having both been promoted the previous season, we BOTH went for promotion straight through to Tier 2 the following season! This Town win over Southend, courtesy of a “Diddy” Dave Gilbert goal was the start of four straight wins, and five out

Rob Mcilveen picks his favourite GTFC team of the 1980s.
W
hat a strange decade the 1980s was at Grimsby Town. Managerially, it was bookended by the magnificent George Kerr and Alan Buckley. But there was a period in the middle that featured the less than magnificent Mike (‘Mr Everton’) Lyons. After George Kerr was sacked in early 1982 his assistant, Dave Booth, established The Mariners in the second tier. When Booth resigned to go into property development in 1985, Lyons took over and the Club became a shambles. It only recovered when Buckley took over in June 1988. Most of my choices reflect this, being from either the early to mid-1980s or the very late 1980s. Nigel Batch replaced the legendary Harry Wainman in the late 1970s. From January 1980 to March 1987, he played in 259 of 306 league games. After saving Town countless points in his 10 years in Town’s goal, his last game was a 5-0 defeat at Plymouth. Is it any coincidence that The Mariners then lost seven and drew two of their last nine games in 1986-87? No.
score at Wembley for Bolton in a Cup Final a good decade before the Mariners reached the twin towers. Foley, Peake, Straw, Turner, Tillson, or Joe Waters? It’s not really a contest is it? Joe Waters would feature in anyone’s team of the 70s, and he features in my team of the 80s even though he left in May 1984. His solo effort against Barnsley on Good Friday 1982 was surely one of the goals of any decade. Waters was rumoured to be in the running for the manager’s job in 1987. If only...
One of the few good things to emerge from Mike Lyons’ tenure was John McDermott as a Youth Trainee in May 1986. After debuting (and scoring) in the number 7 shirt in February 1987, Macca spent the rest of the decade (and well beyond!) making the number 2 shirt his own. A legend, not just for his longevity, but for his consistency and skill as well.
Clive Wigginton was in the twilight of his career in the 1980s, and Mark Lever just beginning his, so my choice here is Chris Nicholl even though he was hardly a spring chicken. I remember admiring his talent when he played for Northern Ireland in the 1982 World Cup. A year later he made his debut at Blundell Park in a game against Shrewsbury Town. He only played 70 games, but was still good enough to be picked for his country during his time at Grimsby.
Crombie or Agnew at left-back? What a difficult choice! Agnew was one of the most stylish full-backs I ever saw, but I didn’t see him often enough because of his injury-proneness. For that reason it has to be the equally stylish, but less injuryprone, Dean Crombie. Released by Town in 1987, he went on to

Chris Nicholl made some Town players even better than they already were. One of these was Kevin Moore, already stylish and elegant enough to attract Liverpool’s attention in 1979. Kevin could take the ball off a forward without him knowing he’d been dispossessed. Of course, Mike Lyons sold him for peanuts. Chris Nicholl signed him from Oldham for Southampton, and Moore played another ten years as Town slid back to Division 4. I’d been teaching Tony Ford how to play football at Nunsthorpe Primary and then Wintringham Grammar, so he was always destined to be a legend! Seriously, how could a player who received an MBE for his services to football (the first player to make 1,000 senior appearances) not be included in my 80s side? You knew he was good because Mike Lyons sold him for a paltry sum in July 1986. He still hasn’t been awarded a testimonial by Town despite eleven consecutive years at Blundell Park. Whymark, Wilkinson, or Saunders? I enjoyed ‘Eddie the Eagle’ Saunders’ late 1980s contributions, and Trevor Whymark was a revelation in the early 1980s. But it has to be Paul Wilkinson in the mid-1980s. Capped for England Under-21s in 1985, he will always be remembered for that last minute goal against Everton in the Milk Cup. Wilko, though, was much, much more than a one game hero. The 1980s produced several decent centreforwards like Marc North, Gordon Hobson, and Jimmy Gilligan. But not one of them can get within touching distance of Kevin Drinkell. He emerged in the late 1970s, played a key role in two
SERIOUSLY, HOW COULD A PLAYER WHO RECEIVED AN MBE FOR HIS SERVICES TO FOOTBALL (THE FIRST PLAYER TO MAKE 1,000 SENIOR APPEARANCES) NOT BE INCLUDED IN MY 80s SIDE? successive promotions, but really blossomed in the 1980s. Town valued their top scorer for three successive seasons at £300,000. An independent tribunal valued him at £105,000. For Norwich he was invaluable as his goals took them to the top flight in 1986. John Cockerill was a wonderful talent who emerged in the late 1980s, and Donal O-Riordan likewise in the mid-1980s. But my choice is between two often maligned players, Bobby Mitchell and Phil Bonnyman. Both often appeared lazy and tackle-shy, but they were neither of those things. They could also find a killer pass better than most other players. Phil Bonnyman just shades it because of his versatility. Bob Cumming for the decade’s first half or Keith Alexander as an emerging talent towards its end? Certainly not Scott McGarvey. Bob’s glory days were the 70s and Keith’s the 90s, so I’m going for Paul Emson, another team mate at Wintringham. His goal for Yarborough against Nunsthorpe in 1968 still gives me nightmares! My more pleasant memories are of a player with spindly legs and astonishing pace terrorising Second Division defenders from 1983 to 1986. No prizes for guessing which manager got rid of Emson.

Laceby Crossroads, Laceby, Grimsby, N E Lincs DN37 7LG mercedes-benzofgrimsby.co.uk Official government fuel consumption figures in mpg (litres per 100km) for the A-Class range: combined 8.4 (33.6)-4.5(62.8). CO2 emissions from 169-107 g/km. The indicated values were determined according to the prescribed measurement method - Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). Figures shown may include options which are not available in the UK. With a PCP plan, your regular monthly payments are low because a significant proportion of the Total Amount Payable is repayable at the end of the agreement by one large repayment. Finance example is for a Mercedes-Benz Agility agreement for a Mercedes-Benz A 180 AMG Line with optional metallic paint, with a contract mileage of 24,000 miles and excess mileage charge of 8.0p per mile. Applies to new vehicles ordered between 10 December 2020 and 31 January 2021 and registered by 31 March 2021 (subject to availability). Retail customers only. At the end of a Mercedes-Benz Agility agreement, there are three options: i) retain the vehicle – pay the optional final payment to own the vehicle; ii) return the vehicle (you may be charged for excess wear and tear); or iii) replace: part-exchange the vehicle, subject to status. *On the road cash price is based on manufacturer’s recommended retail price and includes 12 months’ road fund licence, vehicle first registration fee, delivery, number plates and VAT. Manufacturer contribution can consist of a contribution towards the cash price and a contribution towards the deposit. ^Optional final payment and option to purchase fee not payable if you opt to return the vehicle at the end of the agreement (vehicle condition, excess mileage and other charges may be payable). Finance available subject to credit acceptance to UK residents aged 18 or over. Guarantees and indemnities may be required. Terms and conditions apply. Offer may be varied, withdrawn or extended at any time. ‘Mercedes-Benz Agility’ is a form of hire-purchase agreement provided by Mercedes-Benz Finance, MK15 8BA. You will have a 14 day statutory right to withdraw from the agreement. Listers Group commonly introduce customers to a selected panel of lenders including Mercedes-Benz Finance.
