IN CHARGE:
WAYNE BROWN WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR TONIGHT’S BBC ESSEX SENIOR CUP FIXTURE AGAINST CHELMSFORD CITY. I’D LIKE TO GIVE ROBBIE AND THEIR TEAM A WARM WELCOME, ALONG WITH THEIR SUPPORTERS AND TONIGHT’S MATCH OFFICIALS. I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SAFE TRIP HOME AFTER THE MATCH.
Tonight’s fixture is our last home game before Christmas. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas. I hope you all stay safe and manage to enjoy the festive celebrations. I also hope to see you all back here on December 27th when we welcome Heybridge Swifts to Park Drive. On Saturday, we managed to grind out the win despite perhaps not being at our best. Sometimes this happens in football, and you have to show character and we did that. I was pleased we were able to score three goals, where in previous weeks we have struggled. Tommy pulled off some wonderful saves, especially in the second half with the double save and the one that followed shortly after. Chelmsford will be a different challenge for our group this evening - they are two divisions higher than us in the pyramid and have players with real quality. Like always, however, it is important that we focus on our game and what we do best and if we perform to the best of our abilities, I’m sure we will give ourselves a good chance of progressing to the next round. As you always do, please keep up your support and give the boys a big cheer! I hope you enjoy the game. Wayne

SATURDAY 11TH DECEMBER | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 153 The Jammers battled back from a goal behind against Romford on Saturday to complete a league double over their opening-day opponents this season. After Tuesday’s win against Heybridge Swifts, Wayne Brown reintroduced Shad Ngandu and Al-Amin Kazeem into the starting eleven, whilst Lordon Akolbire continued his return from injury on the bench. Following a bright start, the Jammers found themselves behind in the 16th minute courtesy of a bizarre own goal. After winning the ball back from an attacker, KAZEEM rolled the ball back home towards Tommy Dixon-Hodge in the Maldon goal, however the effort evaded the Jammers’ shot-stopper and left him scrambling. Unable to prevent the ball crossing the line, Romford took an early lead. Slightly shell-shocked, Brown’s side responded within three minutes through the left foot of Scott Kemp. As a corner from the right bounced around in the box, the ball ricocheted off the back of Shomari Barnwell and into the path of KEMP, who took one touch before blasting the ball home, across the face of goal and into the bottom corner. Buoyed by their response, the Jammers continue to press forward and should have taken the lead soon after. A pin-point pass from Dixon-Hodge put Ngandu through on goal but neither he nor his team mates were able to capitalise.

In the 32nd minute, an acute set-piece resulted in Maldon taking the lead. Ngandu was the supplier and his well-worked free-kick allowed BARNWELL space inside the penalty area. He made no mistake and curled his effort into the bottom corner for his third goal in as many games. As the cliché goes, the next five minutes were probably the most important for the Jammers, however they were unable to prevent the visitors equalising and Romford did so within a minute of conceding. Sloppy defending from the home defence allowed Jacopo GATTI time and space to shoot and he made no mistake, rifling his effort into the Maldon net. Searching for the lead once more, Maldon found the advantage again in stoppage time before the break. Smart play from Kazeem down the left saw him skip past his marker before the attacking fullback delivered a pin-point cross into the penalty area, finding Charlee HUGHES who headed home from inside the six-yard box for his ninth goal of the season. Looking for an improved defensive performance in the second half, the Jammers had the worst possible start. Captain Martyn Stokes slipped inside the penalty area, landing on the ball with his hand and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Darnell Kithambo stepped up for the visitors, however he was denied not once, but twice by Dixon-Hodge in the Maldon goal who made a superb double save to keep his side in the lead. The Jammers continued to live dangerously and the young stopper was called upon once more, but he answered the call stunningly, leaping to his right to finger-tip a goal-bound effort over the bar. Chances were few and far between throughout the majority of the second half with Stokes going closest for the Jammers, heading over from a corner, whilst Romford were now struggling to create an opportunity of any note against a Jammers defence who appeared to have put their guard up. Bryan Ifeanyi and Phil Brown-Bampoe were introduced for Brown’s side during the second period. Maldon had Dixon-Hodge to thank for ensuring they completed the double of Romford as the Jammers’ goalkeeper pulled off a number of saves in a man of the match contender performance.

LET’S FIND OUT ABOUT YOUR TEAM MATES AT PARK DRIVE… Who’s the best trainer within the team? I’d like to say myself, but I’ll go with Bradders for me. Who is the quickest player? That has to be between Al-Amin and Manny. Who’s got the worst dress sense in the squad? Tough to say as no one really rocks up in their gear, but I’m going for Dan, the camera man. Who fancies themselves as the team joker? Deffo Sham, but the Gaffa isn’t too far off it. Who is the ‘Teacher’s Pet’? I was going to go with Sam, but I’ll go with Kempy.
SCOTT KEMP: TEACHER’S PET
AWAY FROM PARK DRIV E, LET’S FIND SOM E MOR E OUT ABOU T YOU…
One fact about you that no one knows? I love watching anime shows and not in English. Who do you look to as your role model? My mum and dad, for sure.
What music artist are you embarrassed to admit you like? I don’t have one… Ignoring football, what’s your favourite sport? I’m more of a gamer outside of football, but I’d say Basketball, Boxing, Tennis and F1. What is the worst job you could have and why? To be honest, there probably isn’t one…

The original amateur Chelmsford club originated in the County town in 1878 and moved to their New Writtle Street ground in 1922, however, when that club folded after sixty years the present club was formed as a professional side in 1938. Immediately, they were admitted to the Southern League as one of five new sides who increased the membership to twenty-three. Under the leadership of Billy Walker they quickly made their mark and in that first season reached the fourth round of the FA Cup after knocking out both Darlington and Southampton before going out to Birmingham City at St Andrew’s in front of 44,494 fans, but their league form suffered and they finished in tenth place. The outbreak of war meant that football was severely curtailed, however, in the Southern League’s only wartime season in 1939/40 Chelmsford won the Eastern Section
MALDON & TIPTREE vs CHELMSFORD CITY
and drew the play-off with the Western Section winners Lovells Athletic. In that season City also reached the final of the League Cup where they lost both legs to Worcester City. The club were quick to reform and under Arthur Rowe, who was later to rise to fame with Tottenham Hotspur, they won the championship in season 1945/46, pipping Hereford United to the title. City went on to complete a famous double by winning the League Cup and gaining revenge against Worcester City, thumping them 6-1 at New Writtle Street after a 3-3 away draw. In 1955 the club are forced to appeal to the public to raise the funds that were to keep them alive. The two sides met again in the 1960 final when Chelmsford again ran out victors winning both legs by two goals to one. However, it was to be thirty years before they again lifted the trophy when Hythe Town were overcome 5-3 on aggregate in 1991.
In the FA Cup the early success was not repeated but in 1967 Oxford United were defeated albeit by a lone goal at the third attempt after two 3-3 draws in the First Round Proper. After the Oxford victory, City were defeated at home in the Second Round by Colchester United in front of a crowd of well over 16,000; in the 1970s they got to the Rounds Proper on several occasions, invariably going out to League opposition. In 1972/73 City almost recreated the successful F.A. Cup run of the Thirties. A series of home draws enabled The Clarets to dispose of Hillingdon Borough (2-0) and Telford United (5-0) before Ipswich Town were entertained at New Writtle Street. 15,557 spectators saw the tie which the visitors won by three goals to one. The Southern League title did not return to New Writtle Street until 1968 but was then repeated four years later, however, there then followed a steady decline in City’s fortunes and their first-ever relegation came in 1977 despite having a side that included a budding Nigel Spink in goal and a not so young Jimmy Greaves in attack.
There was not another appearance in the competition proper until 1994 when they went out to Wycombe Wanderers (0-4), again reaching that stage in 1999/2000 before losing by the same scoreline at Oldham Athletic’s Boundary Park and later going out to Aldershot Town after a replay in 2006. The idea of using The Stadium for greyhound racing was soon diffused when the Council demanded alterations to be made to the ground to meet safety standards, costs which were far more than City would have earned in the long run. In 1974 a £500,000 re-development of The Stadium to include 8,500 square feet of offices was then rejected by Council planners. The following year plans to include squash courts at the ground were also thrown out as City were desperately seeking money to ease their financial crisis. City reclaimed a place in the Premier Division as a consequence of the re-organisations which followed the formation of the Alliance (now the Conference) League and in 1986 they were almost elevated to join that elite group but finished as Runners-Up behind Welling United.
NEW WRITTLE STREET WAS CITY’S HOME UNTIL 1997
The Eighties saw another Cup run as City twice met Gillingham away, with the results being 6-1 and 2-0. Relegation returned in 1988 but their stay in the Southern Division was short-lived and they were promoted back as champions a year later. In 1993 a supporters’ group, led by Trevor Wright, stepped in to take over the club at the last minute following the resignation of Dennis Wakeling due to a fruitless High Court battle which effectively left Chelmsford City without a future. Subsequent life in the Premier Division became uncomfortable and after just avoiding the drop in four consecutive seasons City finished bottom in 1997, despite remaining one of the best-supported sides both home and away. Since August 1997, the club’s history has taken further new twists but none so major as the loss of the famous old New Writtle Street ground which was sold by the official receiver. Help, in the form of ground sharing arrangements, came from Chelmsford’s neighbours Maldon Town and subsequently at Billericay Town both ten miles out of Chelmsford. In May 1998, City thought that they had achieved their immediate ambition of a return to the Premier Division when they finished second to Weymouth. However, a seating technicality meant promotion was refused. This was especially frustrating as hosts Billericay were promoted to the Premier Division of the adjacent Ryman League with no such problems. In April 2000, however, New Lodge finally received an ‘A’ grading from the Dr. Marten’s League that would allow promotion to the Premier Division. A constant push for a return to the Premier Division finally bore fruit in 2000/01 and Chelmsford then spent most of the next season consolidating in mid-table, until a late slump in form saw them finish one place above the drop zone.

A reversal of that end-of-season form the following year saw them finish a very respectable ninth, while a rare piece of silverware came City’s way that March when they lifted the Essex Senior Cup for the first time in a decade after hammering Aveley by a 5-0 margin at Southend United’s Roots Hall ground. Paul Parker’s departure as Manager at the end of that season led to his replacement by former player Steve Mosely, who endured some of the most difficult years of the club’s exile, missing out on a place in the new Conference South set-up in a play-off final at Tiverton Town. He was eventually succeeded by Craig Edwards as boss, who injected life back into the squad with his brand of hard-working players who had performed well for him at previous clubs. Edwards was proud to lead the Clarets out in their first game back in Chelmsford at a reformed Melbourne Community Stadium where a capacity crowd on 2nd January 2006 saw the culmination of the club’s toil to secure a home under the chairmanship of Paul Hopkins, a loyal Board of Directors, and with the assistance of the Council. From that point, the Clarets have gone from strength to strength and consolidation in the top half of the Ryman League Premier Division during that campaign was followed by the arrival of former Canvey Island supremo Jeff King as Manager for the start of 2006/07. King brought a number of his talented players and backroom staff with him from Canvey, a club that had emerged from the Essex Senior League to establish themselves at the top level of non-league football. His side just missed out on promotion via the play-offs in his first season but the Ryman League championship was
PAUL PARKER SPENT SOME TIME IN CHARGE IN THE EARLY MILLENNIUM secured the second time around in a comfortable fashion after overcoming a challenge from AFC Wimbledon. At this stage Peter Webb had become the new Chairman at Melbourne and, despite racing to a commanding lead by the New Year in their first Blue Square South season, Chelmsford fell away and succumbed in the play-offs once more, this time to Hampton & Richmond Borough. They did, however, secure another Essex Senior Cup crown. 2009/10 saw the club take stock of its position, place an even higher value on youth and community work within the Borough, and with new Chairman Mansell Wallace and his Board were keen to progress and appointed Glenn Pennyfather in charge of First Team activities. Several flirtations with the play-offs proved exciting and frustrating in equal measure, but there have been plenty of positives from each campaign.
In November 2012 Colchester United were beaten 3-1 in an F.A. Cup firstround tie, the first time the Club had beaten a Football League side since 1967. Although the Club lost at Crawley Town in the second round it was the second season in a row that that particular round had been reached. Glenn Pennyfather left the Club in the summer of 2013 with Dean Holdsworth appointed to replace him. Unfortunately, the former Newport County Manager did not have a successful time at the Melbourne Community Stadium and he left after less than three months of the 2013-2104 season. Mark Hawkes was appointed to replace him having previously been in charge at Heybridge Swifts. Having qualified for the play-offs in four of the Club’s first five years in what is now the National League South the subsequent three seasons saw the Club finish in a mid-table position.

CLUB HISTORY
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took
the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth
place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.
After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on
a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.
ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
