G

ood afternoon everyone and welcome to today’s game. Forest Green Rovers currently occupy a promotion place in League Two, so we fully expect a tough game of football this afternoon. I’d like to welcome Mark Cooper, his players and staff to Blundell Park and wish them well for the rest of the season. Our performance against Leyton Orient on Tuesday wasn’t anywhere close to what I expect, and I think if the players were honest, it wouldn’t be what they expect either. Yes, I thought we were better in the second half but that probably says more about how disappointed I was with our first half performance. After the game, I did give the players a few home truths because I thought I needed to get the message across about the situation we’re in and what it could potentially mean to the players, staff and fans of this football club. Some of the lads have been in non-league before, and I’ve certainly been there and know what it’s about, so I felt it was time to remind them of what we could be dealing with within a couple of months.

I KNOW THAT FANS WANT TO SEE THE PLAYERS OUT THERE BUSTING A GUT AND THAT’S WHAT I’LL BE ASKING FROM THEM TODAY

I think we’re all in agreement that things have improved, but at the moment it’s not translating enough to the games. I don’t know if it’s fear, being low on confidence can do that to you, and I don’t believe it’s because the lads don’t have the passion or determination. But something is preventing them performing to the levels I know they can. I accept that ultimately I’m the one who needs to find the best combination and way of playing to get the best out of the team, but in truth, it’s difficult because not enough players are currently in the form we need them to be in. I have made it clear though that those ‘shackles’ need to come off - one way or another. I know that fans want to see the players out there busting a gut and that’s what I’ll be asking from them today, first and foremost. I want them to leave everything out on the pitch. If we can do that, we stand a much better chance of getting a positive result. UTM, Paul Hurst

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:

Afternoon everyone,

As I said on Tuesday night, there are going to be lots of ups and downs in the next couple of months and Tuesday was certainly a ‘down’. However, as players and a group of staff, we can’t for one moment not believe in ourselves. Of course, belief naturally waivers at times (in yourself, performances, etc) but, as professional athletes, you have to have the mental strength to keep pushing on and believing, and I truly believe in this group of players to make sure come the end of the season we have done enough. I like to sometimes think of something I once heard, ‘look at me and improve you’. Now you can interpret that in lots of ways, but for me, it means look at myself first and I will improve. For example, I’m currently out of the side and rather than looking for an excuse, if I look at myself first I might actually be better for it. I think we can all do that and if we can find an additional 1, 2, 3% then it could make all the difference. Please stay with us and keep the belief! UTM, Macca

elcome to this afternoon’s game against Forest Green Rovers who are having a good season and as ever it will be a tough game. Good luck to Paul and the team, we are all right behind you.

On Thursday evening we held our annual AGM, which was postponed from October 2020 because of Covid. A total of 25 members were in attendance. Hosted online for the first time, as well as a first contested election for board places, we are delighted that the event went smoothly. Minutes from the meeting are now online. Here are the key points from the AGM.

MARINERS TRUST

As you’ll have seen from numerous emails received recently, we had four resolutions. All passed, including the updating of our society rules to the 2016 version – this required at least one third of the membership to support and we are delighted that this was achieved. We will now do the necessary work with the FCA to ensure that they are updated accordingly. Results of the resolutions were as follows: • Resolution One – Accept minutes of AGM on 30th October 2019 – Resolution Passed Unanimously. • Resolution Two – Receive and adopt the accounts for the 12 month period ending 30th April 2020 – Resolution Passed Unanimously. • Resolution Three – Confirm the appointment of the Society’s Auditor – Resolution Passed Unanimously. • Resolution Four – Receive and adopt the Model rules for a supporters Community Mutual (2016 version) 240 votes required. 259 proxy votes received and 7 votes on the night. Total votes FOR 266 and AGAINST 0. Resolution Passed Unanimously. The AGM also saw the first contested election with eight candidates for six board places. The independent election manager, Geoff Bielby (from Hull City Supporters Trust), received 208 voting papers, two were classed as spoilt and not returned in time to be counted. This represents 28.9% of members eligible to vote (those 16 years old or older). 720 were eligible to vote in total. Votes for individual members are as follows: Wayne Brightmore 130 Chris Parker 182 Kelly Billings 163 Marc Reed 92 Ian Townsend 181 Sandii Raithby 164 Hayley Carver-Smith 118 Alan Rutter 74 The six candidates with the highest number of votes and therefore elected onto the Trust board. We would like to thank both Alan and Marc for their hard work and commitment to the election process. It was an incredibly diverse candidate field with strong skills sets among everybody. We hope both continue to support the trust in the future. We would also like to thank Alan for all he has done over the years as a board member and most recently as Chairman. He has already expressed his desire to continue to help in any way he can which speaks volumes for his attitude and commitment to the Trust. The new board will get together for the first time on Monday 8th March. Key roles will be appointed and an update on the trust will be given to new board members. Any questions on the above, please do contact us on enquiries@marinerstrust.co.uk Enjoy the game, The Mariners Trust Board

JAKE EASTWOOD

IN THE SPOTLIGHT O

n-loan keeper Jake Eastwood will be hoping he can keep his first clean sheet and help The Mariners get some more points on the board this afternoon. The six-foot-three goalkeeper joined from Premier League side Sheffield United last month and has featured in our last four games. The 24-year-old used his big frame to great effort last weekend against Harrogate Town, thwarting a number of chances and catching the eye with a string of fine saves. Eastwood began the campaign on loan at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock but after suffering an injury on the first day of the season, he only managed one more appearance for Killie before returning to Bramall Lane in January. With the transfer deadline looming, Paul Hurst moved quickly to bring the big Yorkshireman to The Mariners on a deal to the end of the season - reuniting the pair who’d previously worked together at Scunthorpe United. Eastwood has been on the books at Sheffield United for almost 15 years. He joined their youth academy at the age of 10 and progressed through the age groups until he was offered a pro deal in 2016. He gained experience on loan at Gainsborough Trinity and Mickleover Sports before being handed his Blades debut in an EFL Cup game against Walsall at the start of the 2017-18 season. Following a short spell on loan at Chesterfield and a season playing for United’s development side, he made 16 appearances for The Iron in 2019-20 and earned plaudits for his impressive performances. With a month of first team football now under his belt, Eastwood should be feeling in good shape. Let’s hope the young stopper can keep up his current form and continue to repay the faith shown in him by his old boss.

CAREER:

Sheffield United, Sheffield (Loan), Gainsborough Trinity (Loan), Mickleover Sports (Loan), Chesterfield (Loan), Scunthorpe United (Loan), Kilmarnock (Loan).

By John Lyons, executive editor, The Football League Paper

Wow, we’re into March already and heading for the finishing straight. And when you get to what Sir Alex Ferguson famously called ‘squeaky bum time’, you need your key men to stand up and deliver. Brentford are a high-class Championship team with a host of quality players, but striker Ivan Toney just gives them that extra bit of class and belief when he plays. After missing the Bees’ 2-0 defeat at Coventry with an ankle injury, I saw him return to action as a sub in the second half of the vital 3-0 home win against Sheffield Wednesday in their following match. Brentford had been forced back in the opening stages of the second period and the relegation-threatened Owls had the momentum. Bringing on Toney helped Brentford turn the tide. He gave them a focal point in attack and the Bees could build off him.

CAMBRIDGE’S PAUL MULLIN TOPS THE LEAGUE TWO GOALSCORING CHARTS

Without scoring, the former Peterborough forward, who joined Brentford for an initial £5m last summer, played his part as the Bees eventually eased to victory.

After last weekend’s programme, the 26-year-old stood at the summit of the League One leading scorers chart with 21 goals.

Then it was back in the starting line-up against Stoke last Saturday. With the game in the melting pot, Toney clinically notched a 79th-minute winner as Brentford came from behind to earn three more precious points to aid their promotion assault.

Indeed, he got Posh out of a sticky scrape against lowly Wigan last Saturday. Trailing 1-0, Clarke-Harris pulled his side level on 82 minutes and then kept his nerve to net the winner from the spot three minutes later. The victory cemented Darren Ferguson’s troops’ position at the top of the table and they have every chance of earning a return to the second tier.

Amazingly, it took the 24-year-old’s Championship goalscoring tally to 25 for the season. That’s a remarkable feat and has earned him a growing number of admirers. Stoke manager Michael O’Neill is one of them.

“Jonno did what Jonno does again,” said Ferguson. “If we give him the service and give him the chances, he puts the ball in the back of the net.”

“We had chances to go ahead and we have to take those like Toney took his,” admitted the Potters boss. “He has proved there is not anyone better than him in this league. It’s a great finish and that’s what separates us.”

As you approach the finish line, you want your star men fit and firing. The likes of Norwich’s Teemu Pukki, Sunderland’s Charlie Wyke and Cambridge’s Paul Mullin are among the other hitmen likely to have a big part to play.

While Toney tops the Championship scoring chart, his old club Peterborough haven’t done too badly in replacing him. Former Coventry and Bristol Rovers striker Jonson Clarke-Harris has filled Toney’s big boots with aplomb.

Their managers will be tempted to wrap them up in cotton wool as much as possible in between games to make sure they’re ready and available for action. They could make all the difference.

Notts County U18s 2-1 Grimsby Town U18s Neil Woods’ side travelled to Notts County on Tuesday and suffered their second defeat of the season to the league leaders. Town started well and Jez Goundry had an effort fantastically saved by the County keeper. Notts loaded balls into the Town area but the back line LUIS ADLARD stood strong and defended well. Town went close again when Owen Davey, Luis Adlard and Harvey Tomlinson linked well but Harry Milner couldn’t connect with the cross. The second half was more of the same but Town’s football had started to create better opportunities. Jamie Bramwell fired over from close range and Tomlinson saw his shot well saved by the keeper, but it was Adlard who broke the deadlock after a neat through ball from Tomlinson. Notts struck back immediately though when a cross was hit first time from the edge of the box and it looped over the keeper. Town kept persisting and had a couple of chances to retake the lead through Milner and Adlard. However, County won the game after a good header from a free kick. With time running out, The Mariners had several appeals for a penalty turned down and a last-gasp freekick which was adjudged not to have crossed the line. Town: Boyes, Scott, Blakeley, Davey, Smaller, Goundry, Potts, Bramwell, Stratton (Milner), Tomlinson, Adlard. Subs: Milner, Jacobs, Markham, Essel, Khouri.

W

DANNY COYNE Goalkeeper

hat a decade the noughties were in the plight of Grimsby Town FC! One day we were sitting pretty at the top of Division One, the next we’re fighting to stay in the Football League. How did such a dramatic fall from grace come about? Well, it began with three seasons of avoiding relegation from Division One. But when the inevitable did happen, the wheels came off in spectacular fashion. By the summer of 2004, we’d sunk to the depths of the fourth division for the first time in 15 years. In 2005-06 we went within nano seconds of automatic promotion and after three lower mid table finishes our eventual fate was sealed in 2009-10.

Quite simply the best goalkeeper I’ve seen play for The Mariners. I’ve lost count of the amount of times he put in matchwinning displays. And I was at QPR the day he almost single-handedly kept out Crouch and co. The guy must have run out of space on his mantle piece due to the amount of awards he picked up! He was also capped by Wales during his time at Blundell Park.

JOHN McDERMOTT Right Back Who else could it be? Macca was consistently one of our best players in Division One, let alone our team! I don’t think I ever saw him beaten for pace and he was always effective going forward. The full-back remained a Mariner when he had opportunities to leave and he went on to set the all-time appearance record for the club.

Despite the downward trajectory, I loved the early part of the decade. At the turn of the millennium I was 12 years old and I got the chance to see us compete against teams like Wolves, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest. When I was old enough, I jumped at the chance to visit these places (and many others) on my own, or with a mate, by train or on the supporters bus. It was exciting and gave me my first real taste of independence. As the decade wore on, and our slide down the leagues combined with a time in my life when other things were competing for my attention, I started to lose the bug a bit. And by the 90th minute of the play-off final in 2006, it had almost vanished for good. Or at least, it felt that way for a few weeks!

TONY GALLIMORE Left Back I think with Gally it’s a case of not realising what we had till he was gone! He proved to be a great replacement for Gary Croft, playing regularly at left back for Town for seven years. Gally was technically very good and probably had one of the sweetest left feet I’ve seen. He didn’t take many free-kicks in the noughties but a couple do stand out from his earlier days with the club. When he signed for Barnsley at the end of 2002-03, we felt his absence.

ANDY TODD Centre Back

The players I’ve picked in my team of the decade weren’t necessarily the best, but they are the ones who managed to light up the park more often than not… for me at least.

In terms of impact, has there been a more effective loan signing than Andy Todd? The centre back joined a Town team that looked destined for the drop and inspired us to five wins during his

18

12 games for the club. He was as strong as an ox and always seemed to have more time on the ball than anyone else on the pitch. We were very lucky to get him because after his loan he was signed by Premier League Blackburn Rovers and was soon made their skipper.

GEORGE SANTOS Centre Back Like Todd, George Santos was only with us for a short while, but when he was, he looked a class above everyone around him. Originally a centre midfielder, Groves asked him to play at centre back and I think his sheer presence almost saved us from relegation again in 2002-03. Imperious in the air, Santos once headed the ball from the six-yard-box into the opponents half. Just let that fact sink in…

into a leader during 01-02 and his overly-exaggerated stepovers will be talked about on the terraces for years to come!

PHIL JEVONS Left Midfield Jevo probably wouldn’t be too happy playing out on the wing, but it was on the left flank that the former Everton striker had his best spell in a Town shirt! After missing the majority of 2002-03 due to contractual issues, he returned in 2003-04 with a point to prove. He scored 13 in 30 appearances from left midfield, including four goals against Barnsley in that 6-1 drubbing. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention he scored a last minute 35-yard winner at Anfield against Liverpool as well. No biggie.

JOHN OSTER Right Midfield

MICHAEL BOULDING Striker

The academy graduate that swelled the club’s coffers in 1997 returned to Blundell Park on loan during the 2002-03 season. When he left five years earlier, the Lincolnshire lad was just a teenager with potential. What Town fans got to see during those 17 games on loan was the realisation of that potential. The craft, guile and intelligence he displayed was unlike anything we’d seen since the days of Ivano Bonetti. I still believe that if he’d stayed with us for the final six weeks of the season, we wouldn’t have been relegated.

Quick Mick was something special the second half of the 2001-02 season. His direct running caused absolute mayhem in Division One defences as we pulled off our own ‘Great Escape’. After his move to Villa didn’t work out, he returned the following season and showed glimpses of his old form before injuries got the better of him. By 2003-04 he developed into a more complete striker and notched 13 Second Division goals by Christmas. He was sold to Barnsley in February and Town ended up being relegated.

PAUL BOLLAND Centre Midfield Town’s driving force in the engine room when we went close to promotion in 2005-06. Bolly was a genuine box-to-box midfielder who helped to make our midfield tick during his four years with the club. He was a key player in Alan Buckley’s team which reached the Football League Trophy Final in 2008. Bolly also had the handy knack of popping up with important goals.

ALAN POUTON Centre Midfield Probably one of the most popular players of the era. Pouts was a genuine cult hero, not because he was ever the most skillful player, but because he always gave everything he had. He left it all on the pitch. And that’s what Town fans love more than anything - a player who embodies our own passions. He matured

MICHAEL REDDY Striker Another striker blessed with blistering pace, Reddy scored 14 goals in 51 appearances in 2005-06 and his solo goal against Torquay United is probably one of the best scored at BP in recent times. The Irish striker got injured early on in the playoff final against Cheltenham at Cardiff and had to come off. I’ve often wondered what would have happened if he didn’t get injured… but that’s not healthy. He only managed 11 more appearances for Town before the injuries he’d struggled with throughout his career proved too much. Such a shame.

Bringing speed and energy to the Rovers midfield, Ebou Adams is at his best when he’s breaking up the opponents’ play, getting hold of the ball and making crucial passes to put his team onto the front foot. Active from box-tobox, the media often claim Ebou is the most fouled player in League Two, but there’s a lot more to the Gambian international’s game than shielding the ball and winning free kicks. The 25-yearold began his career at Dartford before being signed by Norwich City in 2016 for an undisclosed fee. During his two year spell at Carrow Road, he featured regularly for The Canaries development side in ‘Premier League 2’ and had loan spells at Braintree, Shrewsbury and Leyton Orient. Released in 2018, he joined Ebbsfleet United for a season and was then signed by Cooper for The Green Army.

All-action midfielder, Elliott Whitehouse moved to The New Lawn in the summer after two years with The Mariners. The 27-year-old suffered a ruptured ACL just weeks after signing for Town and missed the whole of 2018-19, but returned to full fitness and made 38 appearances last term. Released in the summer, he joined Rovers on a two-year deal and featured 23 times for his new club, scoring three goals. Whitehouse is a product of Sheffield United’s development system. However, he made his breakthrough in non-league football, helping Lincoln City to win the National League as Champions in 2016-17 and gain promotion to League Two. He also scored the only goal in Lincoln’s EFL Trophy victory at Wembley against Shrewsbury Town in 2018.

With 14 goals to his name this campaign, Jamille Matt gives the Rovers attack a physical presence in the box. His aerial ability and poacher’s instinct were on full display in FGR’s 4-1 demolition of Scunthorpe in October, in which he scored a hat-trick. The target man is also prepared to roll up his sleeves, run the channels and chase down lost causes. Though only 31, Matt has played well over 350 games in his career, scoring just shy of 100 goals. He joined FGR in the summer after two seasons at Newport County. Prior to that, Matt spent the majority of 2017-18 on loan at Blundell Park and scored the goal that secured The Mariners place in the Football League. The big Jamaican has also notably featured for Kidderminster Harriers, Fleetwood Town and Blackpool.

NOT EVERYTHING IS BLACK AND WHITE They are definitely ‘The Green Army’ now, but for almost a century Forest Green Rovers wore black and white stripes. They even had red socks from the late 60s until 2004. Ring any bells?

2003-04

In 2010, green energy tycoon, Dale Vince launched a takeover of the club and Forest Green Rovers became a wholly owned subsidiary of Ecotricity Ltd, the company founded and owned by Vince. After consultations with supporters, a new crest was introduced for the 2011-12 season and a year later it was announced that the club would drop it’s traditional colours in favour of lime green and black. Vince hasn’t stopped with changing FGR’s badge and kit though, instead he set about transforming them into the world’s first sustainable football club. Their New Lawn pitch is entirely organic, a large percentage of the club’s electricity is supplied by solar panels and the catering (for fans and players) has gone totally vegan.

SIX

OF THE BEST

vs FOREST GREEN By John Kirk

ALAN CONNELL CELEBRATES WITH ROB EAGLE IN 2010

FOREST GREEN ROVERS 3-3 TOWN 7TH OCTOBER 2010

FGR were founded not long after Town had been, so it shows how teams fortunes diverge. They must have played in a near-record number of different leagues, and their kit eventually became black and white stripes with black shorts... a wise decision indeed! That was still their kit when they first played Town on 7th October 2010. At that time, FGR had never been in the league. The match in Nailsworth was sandwiched between four games with former league clubs for the Mariners… Wrexham and Newport Co before and Kidderminster and Southport after the

match. FGR were two up before 20 minutes had gone by, but Robert Eagle pegged the score back before FGR went 3-1 up after 53 minutes. First Andrew Wright reduced the difference before Rob Eagle brought the scores level! And that’s how it stayed.

FOREST GREEN ROVERS 0-1 TOWN 3RD SEPTEMBER 2011

Eleven months later and we were back in Nailsworth, and Rob Scott and Paul Hurst had become Town managers. The season hadn’t started well, with four defeats and a draw out of the first six matches (including the ignominious 0-5 at Braintree). This season was also the first for Macca in Town’s goal. 212 Town fans were present in the 1,181 crowd, and they were treated to Town’s second win of the season with a Michael Coulson goal almost on the stroke of half time. The match set a nice pattern – Town beating FGR in this and their next four meetings!

TOWN 3-1 FOREST GREEN ROVERS 19TH OCTOBER 2013

By the time the clubs met in Autumn 2013, Paul Hurst was the sole manager, and Macca was in goal, Chris Doig in defence, and Lenell John-Lewis would have been in but had been injured a couple of games earlier. And here we all are seven and a half years later! Again FGR took the lead, in front of 3,115 spectators – all Town fans apart from 20 from Gloucestershire. Ross Hannah though levelled the

WHEN MICHAEL JOLLEY HAD COME TO THE CLUB, WE WERE AS GOOD AS DOWN, AND OUT OF THE LEAGUE. BY THE END OF THIS MATCH WE WERE COMFORTABLY HOME AND DRY AFTER A HAT-TRICK FROM JJ HOOPER! scores after 35 minutes, put Town ahead 19 minutes after the restart and Alex Rodman made the game safe six minutes from time. It was the start of a great fifteen game unbeaten run in the National League and in cups, including beating the Iron 2-1 at Glanford Park in the FA a goalless draw in the original game at BP.

FOREST GREEN ROVERS 2-1 TOWN 7TH FEBRUARY 2015

I’ve placed this defeat in Six of the Best, not for the game itself, but for the fact that with this defeat and the following game at home to Bristol Rovers, Town went on a great run, only losing one more match in the rest of the season – 15 games that took us to Wembley for the play-off final versus Bristol Rovers… and THAT decision! For the record, our goal at FGR was an own goal. All gifts gratefully received!

FOREST GREEN ROVERS 0-3 TOWN 5TH MAY 2018

When Michael Jolley had come to the club, we were as good as down, and out of the league. By the end of this match we were comfortably home and dry after a hat-trick from JJ Hooper! What a way to end a season that had otherwise been quite poor! JJ had scored his

PADRAIG AMOND IN ACTION AT WEMBLEY goals in the 54th, 84th and 90th minute. Town’s last five games had yielded 13 points out of a possible 15!

TOWN 3-1 FOREST GREEN ROVERS 15TH MAY 2016 (AT WEMBLEY)

17,198 fans made the journey to the premier English football stadium, with Town lining up with Macca, Richard Tait, Josh Gowling, Toto, Gregor Robertson (now giving us lots of coverage in the national press!), Nolan, Disley, Clay, Arnold, Omar Bogle and Podge Amond. Pittman, Hoban and Shaun Pearson also appeared from the bench. Omar scored two goals in a minute just before half-time, FGR inevitably gave us the NATHAN ARNOLD collywobbles when they SEALS TOWN’S pulled one back on the hour RETURN TO THE EFL mark before Nathan Arnold scored with more or less the last kick of the match. John Tondeur said something like “They think it’s all over! It is now!” (well perhaps not that exactly) and Town were back in the League! FGR’s turn to get into the league for the first time ever came the following year also at Wembley, setting a new record for the smallest ever town to have a team in the Football League… just under 6,000 population!

Pat Bell writes about Craig Disley, our former midfield-captain-leader, and the memorable header he scored against Forest Green Rovers in the 2015-16 season. There is, in my mind, a broken chain of midfield-captain-leaders. It began for me with Joe Waters. It resumed with Shaun Cunnington who passed the baton almost seamlessly to Paul Groves. Groves joined us when we were nearing an apex in our fortunes and kept us there. After the fireworks of Woods and Rees, of Gilbert and Childs, of Clive Mendonca and then later of Donovan and Burnett began to fade, there was Groves still: a welltimed run into the box, a well-directed header, goal. 1-0 (Groves.) After Groves, the fall. That chain of midfield-captain-leaders was badly broken for many years. Many, many years until Craig Disley came along. As players, Waters, Cunnington, Groves and Disley are far from identical. But what they had in common was the organic quality of unself-conscious leadership – no ostentatious pumping of fists, no badge-kissing. They led because that was who they were and that leadership transmitted itself from the pitch into the stands. Although it came before Operation Promotion, its defining image was Craig Disley in a wig, joining in one of our fancy dress days. When you see that, you know that we are all – players and fans – in it together. It is 6 March 2016. We are battling to stay in the race for the one automatic promotion place with Cheltenham and Forest Green. Our visit to the New Lawn, we thought, was vital. In the end it had no bearing on who won the title, little bearing on who competed in the play-offs. But when we came up against Forest Green again at Wembley, it was a handy memory to fall back on. There are 20 minutes left and the match is goalless. Town are in possession on the left, the ball at Andy Monkhouse’s feet. He sees something and chips the ball towards the far post. What he has seen is Craig Disley. A well-timed run into the box, a well-directed header, goal. 1-0 (Disley) Pat Bell is an editor of the independent Grimsby fanzine Cod Almighty
