WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR THIS TONIGHT’S VELOCITY TROPHY FIXTURE AGAINST BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT. I’D LIKE TO GIVE BRETTAND HIS TEAM A WARM WELCOME, ALONG WITH THEIR SUPPORTERS AND TONIGHT’S MATCH OFFICIALS. After back-to-back wins, the boys are hopefully coming into tonight’s game full of confidence. We have been short on numbers in recent weeks due to injuries, suspensions and covid, but hopefully a number of the boys should be available this evening. It’s always good to get into the habit of winning games and hopefully we can continue that tonight. This is a competition we are taking seriously and we want to progress as far as possible. Tonight’s opposition, Brightlingsea, are unbeaten in their last three games and have won two of them. Coming from the Isthmian Premier Division, that will present a tough test, however it’s important that whilst we pay them respect, we concentrate on our game and do what we do best. The support we received against Canvey Island at home and away at Basildon United on Saturday was fantastic. Please keep it up and continue to make plenty of noise. I hope to see as many of you as possible back on Park Drive on Saturday, when we welcome Brentwood Town to the Maldon Stadium, for what will be another tough league game. All the best and enjoy tonight’s match. Paul

TUESDAY 25TH JANUARY | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 296 After a run of three league defeats for the second time this season, the Jammers shocked league leaders Canvey Island in their most recent Park Drive outing. Despite the difference in league position, it was the Jammers who started the brighter and created early chances which, on another day, would’ve ended up in the back of net. Bradley McClenaghan had a shot blocked by a last-ditch sliding tackle, whilst Shomari Barnwell was guilty of missing from fairly close-range. Bryan Ifeanyi was next to be wasteful when he was unable to convert a brilliant cross from Scott Kemp. In the 23rd minute, Maldon finally had the game’s opening goal - and deservedly so. A silky one-two between Shad Ngandu and Barnwell led the ball to IFEANAYI’S feet. The Colchester United youngster took one touch before rifling his effort into the roof of the net to give the Jammers the lead. Canvey have been no strangers to going behind in games recently and they almost responded immediately. After a smart piece of play from the dangerous Evans Kouassi, Matt Price could only divert his header against the woodwork when really he should have equalised. With the game continually flowing from one end to the other, McClenaghan had a chance after a well worked set-piece but his effort sailed over the crossbar. At the other end, Canvey had the ball in the net, but Price was denied by the offside flag.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT
With a deserved lead at half-time, the Jammers began the second period knowing that the next goal would be crucial... and, just three minutes after the break, they would double the advantage. Sam Coombes won the ball back in midfield and immediately released McCLENAGHAN in his own half, and the midfielder broke forward, skipping past two challenges before coolly slotting his effort into the bottom corner beyond Bobby Mason to give the Jammers a two-goal advantage against the league leaders. At the other end, Tommy Dixon-Hodge made a splendid save to prevent the Gulls from reducing the deficit. Maldon continued to push forward in numbers, with Barnwell having yet another chance but blazing over before Aaron Williams-Bushell skipped a challenge and fired his effort wide of the net. Just inside the final quarter of an hour, the visitors did pull a goal back to set up a grandstand finish. A cross from the skilful Kouassi found PRICE who headed home to put the visitors back in the game. Despite an anxious ending to a brilliant performance, though, Dixon-Hodge was not tested in the final closings of the contest as the young partnership of Daniel Obi and Frankie Terry superbly marshalled the Jammers to three points.

I am delighted to be here and I can’t wait to get started now.”
Following a brief spell with Heybridge Swifts earlier this season, Cole has made 22 appearances for Haringey so far this term. A vastly-experienced addition, Ade lists Billericay Town, Braintree Town,

SATURDAY 29TH JANUARY | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 101 Bradley McClenaghan scored his second goal in as many games to give the Jammers all three points at Basildon United on Saturday. On a blustery afternoon and a bobbly pitch, it was clear that an attractive afternoon of football was unlikely. Basildon’s new manager Mark Benterman took charge and, looking to impress the new boss, it was the home side who started the brighter. An early cross from the right-hand side looked perfect for Joe Wright to tap home, but he missed his kick and the Jammers defence survived an early scare. Maldon went close twenty minutes into the match when Rob Clark’s free-kick rebounded off the crossbar for what was almost a sensational debut goal. The opening goal came just after the half-hour mark, though, when a long ball from Tommy Dixon-Hodge was recycled and played forward to Shomari Barnwell. Bryan Ifeanyi received the ball from Barnwell and set up McCLENAGHAN, fresh from his goal against Canvey Island. The attacking midfielder took one touch before striking the ball towards goal. His effort from outside the penalty area took a deflection off ex-Maldon man, Paul Shave, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and settled into the back of the net for McClenaghan’s second goal in as many games.

As half-time approached, the hosts continued to be wasteful in attack. When they did manage an effort that looked destined for the top corner, DixonHodge sprung to his right to make a brilliant diving save. On the stroke of the interval, the Jammers had another chance to extend their lead but Olumide Oluwatimilehin’s effort was saved by the Basildon shot-stopper. Maldon’s best chance of the second half arrived fairly early, as Scott Kemp beat his man in a wide area before crossing to an unmarked McClenaghan, but Maldon’s goalscorer was unable to plant his header on target, instead sending it just wide of the post. With the Jammers’ legs tiring, Basildon were holding the majority of the possession without troubling the defence on a regular basis. Maldon did have chances of their own, with Oluwatimilehin sending an effort wide and Lacey also heading wide. Benterman’s side continually pumped the ball into the penalty area looking to utilise their aerial threat, however Maldon’s young defence continued to remain strong. As full-time approached, the Jammers had to call upon Dixon-Hodge once more and he duly assisted, producing another superb save to ensure the Jammers departed Basildon with all three points and their fourth league clean sheet of the season.

Early league action saw Brightlingsea playing their football in the Essex & Suffolk League, and virtually one hundred years on the current team compete in the same competition. Records state that in the season 1908/09 Brightlingsea Town won the 2nd Division title with the Army Service Corps runners-up. Football was keenly contested in the 1920’s with the town boasting other teams as well as The Town team, and a junior team also entered competition as well as a United eleven. Games were played on Bell Green an area now known as Bellfield Close, before the recreation ground in Regent Road became the regular home venue for the teams. The current pavillion was in those days
MALDON & TIPTREE vs BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT
double tiered and even in those early days a real atmosphere was generated especially for the local derbies against Wivenhoe & Gt Bentley. A United team moved to the current North Road site in the 1920’s, whilst the other main Brightlingsea team namely Athletic and nicknamed “The Tics” continued to play on the rec. The game continued to flourish in the forthcoming years and plenty of successful seasons kept the now United team collecting a number of cups & trophies. We have the word “bung” being bandied about in this year 2007, but in the pre-war years the local agents were busy recruiting any army personnel stationed at Colchester barracks, to travel to the town and wear a United shirt.
Moderate success during the 50’s & 60’s saw United continue to enjoy their football in the Essex & Suffolk League, before a move to the newly formed Essex Senior League in 1971 saw a new challenge for the club. These early years saw competitive league fixtures against teams such as Billericay, Heybridge, Witham & Maldon, an indication of the standard required to compete at a higher level. The club enjoyed some successful seasons during the 70’s & 80’s winning back to back Championships and League Cups under the management of Jackie Parkinson and in the later seasons current BUF&SC vice-Chairman Steve Dowman was the man at the helm. A then major step was undertaken in 1990 when the club moved to the Jewson Eastern Counties League. A grey day on the 25th August 1990 saw them start their new era with an away match at Yaxley, almost into Leicestershire, where the team fought out a nil nil draw. The first Jewson League line up was as follows, L Pentney, S Howe J March, R Schultz, G Higgleton, W Ward, R Woodall, C Dines, P Frost, T French, G Staines, subs were P Daley & P Carter. This proved a difficult period for the club although a brief experience in the Premier Division provided some notable fixtures & results. The spiralling costs of travelling, match officials and general expenses were proving difficult to maintain. The longest serving manager in this period was local personality Frank Thompson who competed well with the limited resources and is still plying his trade with Arlesford. Again decisions were made at the club, and at the end of the
2001/02 season they left the Jewson League and returned to the Essex & Suffolk Border League, now completing a full circle. The final Jewson fixture was on the 25th April 2002 when a 5-1 defeat ensued at Somersham, the goal scored by J Chatters. The line up for that day was G Wood, D Wilson, D Booker, J Morris, S Gove, G Salmon, T Chatters, G Staines, M Simkin, D Saunders, J Chatters, with subs T Payne, B Weeford, D Allen, R Meadows. Back in the Border League the new season opened on 17th August with a 3-2 defeat at Hatfiled Peverel with the United line up R Meeking, J Reynolds, D Marks, N Turner, W Saunders, J Wilde, D Saunders, J Walters, M Wheeler, D Razor, K Welsh, subs were J Chatters, J Baebone, G Fisher with the goals from N Turner & W Saunders. Once again another chapter opened for the club when the amalgamation developed with the successful Regent Park Rangers set up, which now sees an umbrella of some 18 teams from 7 year olds to the senior team giving football to players & spectators no doubt for another one hundred years. Brightlingsea United FC and Regent Park Rangers FC amalgamated at the start of 2005/06 season to become Brightlingsea Regent Football Club. During this time the squad and club have continued to grow and develop, having success in the Border League Division 1 and Cup. In 2009/10 new management team James Webster and Mark Gridley guided Regent to a forth place finish and followed up the following season in 2010/11 by
winning the Kent Blaxhill Essex & Suffolk Border League Premier in a superb season by playing 34, winning 31, drawing 2 and losing just one game. In season 2011/12, James Webster added Tom Rothery to the management team in September and they finished their first season back at step 6 with a creditable fifth place finish. They also reached the Quarter-final of the Essex Senior Cup before losing to League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge. The 2012/13 season was successful for many reasons. Firstly a F.A Vase cup run, which was the longest in the clubs history before bowing out in Round Three (Last 64). The club gained promotion back to Step 5 and the Premier Division with a third place finish which included a 22 game unbeaten run during the season. In the final game of the season the team won the First Division KO Cup Final with a 1-0 victory over Great Yarmouth Town. The 2013/14 season in the Eastern Counties Premier Division again proved to be a successful one, gaining promotion after finishing Runners-up to Hadleigh United, losing out on the final day by goal difference. The club also reached the last 16 of the F.A Vase and in doing so agian created history. The 2016/17 season saw Brightlingsea Regent crowned as champions of the Isthmian North Division, Notching up an impressive 103 points and finishing 12 points ahead of their closest rivals. Maldon & Tiptree FC, ensuring an historic promotion to the Bostik Premier league.

MALDON & TIPTREE
CLUB HISTORY
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the
16
Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took
MALDON & TIPTREE vs BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT
the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth
place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.
After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on
a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.
ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
