PAUL ABRAHAMS

WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR TODAY’S ISTHMIAN LEAGUE FIXTURE AGAINST BRENTWOOD TOWN. I’D LIKE TO GIVE ROD AND HIS TEAM A WARM WELCOME, ALONG WITH THEIR SUPPORTERS AND THIS AFTERNOON’S MATCH OFFICIALS. We arrive back at Park Drive after back-toback league wins and a hugely encouraging performance against the league front runners, Canvey Island. A midweek break from league activity saw a disappointing loss and cup exit to Brightlingsea and, although we used this as an opportunity to share minutes around the squad, we wanted to progress and reinforce that winning mentality. The performance was OK, but our final third quality was lacking and credit to Brightlingsea, they were organised, resilient and capitalised on a defensive error and a fortuitous offside goal. We wish them well in the next round and for the rest of the season. The premature cup exit does however allow us to fully focus on the league and our promotion target. Today’s opponents Brentwood will be as tough a challenge as we could find. Rod is a vastly experienced

manager who knows how to win games of football. We expect a battle and on the back of a good run of form themselves, we know we are going toe-to-toe with a side whose ambitions match our own. We are very much looking forward to today’s challenge and feeding off the growing support around the ground. Please keep up your superb support and continue to make plenty of noise, it doesn’t go unnoticed and drives the boys on. Sixteen games left, 48 points and a local derby home to Heybridge Swifts on Tuesday, which includes FREE ENTRY for all. What’s not to love about local nonleague football and Maldon & Tiptree FC? All the best and enjoy the match. Paul

MALDON & TIPTREE BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT

TUESDAY 1ST FEBRUARY | VELOCITY TROPHY THIRD ROUND | ATT: 172 Maldon & Tiptree exited the Velocity Trophy in midweek at the third round stage, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Brightlingsea Regent. The Jammers dominated possession throughout the first half with the visitors, despite their one division advantage, content to sit within their own half and catch Maldon on the counter-attack. Debutant Ade Cole and Olu Oluwaitmilehin had the best goalscoring chances for the hosts, but both midfielders sent their efforts wide of the goal. As the game approached half-time, Emmanuel Martins went on a dazzling run and appealed for a penalty when he felt he was tripped inside the box, but the referee booked the full-back for simulation. After the half-time break, Regent began to impose themselves in attack and the Jammers were made to pay. Joe Turpin, returning from a long injury lay-off, was punished for losing possession near the halfway line and the visitors rapidly broke free with Wyan REID planting his effort into the bottom corner to open the scoring for the evening. With around twenty minutes to go, Brightlingsea had their second, partly due to a number of Maldon substitutes impacting their fluidity. A long forward pass from the visitors was flicked on to Dom LOCKE who blasted the ball beyond Tommy Dixon-Hodge.

The Jammers did find the back of the net late on in their attempts to mount a comeback, but Scott Kemp saw the flag raised for offside as he tapped in a rebound after Lordon Akolbire had seen his header bounce back off the bar. In stoppage time, Bradley McClenaghan saw his appeals for a penalty waved away and the Jammers exited the Velocity Trophy with all attention turning to a promotion push in the league.

TRAVEL TO BURY TOWN

Independent supporters association, the JFA are exploring the feasibility of providing a coach for our trip to Bury next weekend on Saturday 12th February. The Jammers Fans Association (JFA), independently launched in January 2022 with the aim of assisting the football club to grow its existing fan base, whilst creating a community atmosphere in and around Park Drive. Now, the JFA are seeking feedback

from Jammers supporters as to whether or not they would be interested in travelling to Bury Town via coach next Saturday. The JFA committee need supporters and their members to confirm in advance if they would travel on the coach, in order to make it feasible. Each seat on the coach would be subject to a fee, likely to be in the region of approximately £15 for members of the JFA and £20 for non-JFA members.

The JFA are set to confirm the logistics in full, however it is likely that the coach would depart the Maldon Stadium between 12:00 – 12:30pm and would depart Bury Town at approximately 5:30pm. If you would travel on the coach, please can you let the JFA committee know, as soon as possible via email at contact@thejammersfa.co.uk, the WhatsApp chat or speak to a member of the committee directly.

Football in the town of Brentwood has a long and colourful history going back to the 19th century when the original Brentwood FC reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup in 1886, where they were beaten 3-1 by the eventual winners Blackburn Rovers. In the 1950s and 1960s the town had a successful amateur club, Brentwood & Warley, who were three times winners of the Delphian League. In 1965 they turned “professional”, becoming Brentwood Town and rapidly rose to the heights of non-league football. Brentwood Town became a force in the Southern League Premier Division and produced some heroic performances in the FA Cup, reaching the third round proper in 1969-70. However, at the end of that season the club effectively folded and amalgamated with another Southern League club, Chelmsford City. The current Brentwood Football club was founded in 1954 under the name of Manor Athletic and the first ground was at King George’s Playing Fields (Hartswood). In 1957 they moved to Larkin’s Playing Field where they played in the Romford and District League, the Southern Essex

MALDON & TIPTREE vs BRENTWOOD TOWN

Combination and the London and Essex Border League before joining the Essex Olympian League in 1967. Here they won the League Cup in 1968 and were then runnersup four years in a row. Following the demise of Brentwood Town in 1970, Manor found themselves the most senior club in the district and adopted the town name, changing from Manor Athletic to Brentwood Athletic, and then becoming Brentwood FC in 1972. In 1974 they joined the Essex Senior League. For many years there was a question mark against the club’s senior status and in 1976/77, although they were allowed to stay in the Essex Senior League, they were deprived of their senior status for a year. In that season Brentwood created history by winning the Essex Intermediate Cup in the same season as the Reserves won the Essex Junior Cup. In 1992 Larkin’s finally lost its senior status and the Club had to enter a ground sharing arrangement with East Thurrock in order to continue in the Essex Senior League. With the help of the local council Brentwood at last found a new home at The Brentwood Centre and the first game there was played on October 9th 1993.

The most famous player ever to have played for Brentwood was Jimmy Greaves who played his first match on 27th December 1975 but failed to keep his record of scoring on every debut as Brentwood lost 2-0 to Witham Town. Brentwood finally won the Essex Senior league for the first time in season 2000-01. They had previously been runners-up on no less than four occasions. The Essex Senior League Cup was won on four occasions in 1976, 1979, 1991 and 2007, and they were cup runners-up in 1984. Derrick Stittle holds the record as the league’s longest serving manager having been in charge from 1978 to 1999, one of the longest reigns in the history of English non-league football. In 1995/96, in their second season in the F.A. Vase, Brentwood reached the third round, further than any other Essex Senior League club. They also won the Harry Fisher Cup after a penalty shoot out with Fords at Barking F.C. 1996/97 saw the launch of an Under 18 side and the club now runs six youth teams from the U13 age group through to U18 in the Eastern Junior Alliance. The youth teams have been particularly successful in cup competitions and in 2014 the Under-18s reached the final of the Essex County Cup for the third season running. The start of the 1999/2000 season saw the most significant changes since the move to the Brentwood Centre in 1993, with the installation of the club’s first floodlights and the appointment of Paul Delea as first team manager following the retirement of Derrick Stittle. The floodlights meant a return to the FA Vase after a two-season absence and entry into the FA Cup and FA Youth Cup for the first time ever. 2004 saw the club celebrating its 50th anniversary and there was also a change of club name, to Brentwood Town. There was some success in 2005/06 as Brentwood reached the final of the Essex Senior League Cup, losing 2-0 to Hornchurch in a closely fought battle, but 2006/07 season saw a remarkable

upturn in the club’s fortune. In the most successful season in the club’s history Brentwood Town won the Essex Senior League treble of league title and both league cup competitions. The title was won by six points and Barkingside were beaten 4-0 in the final of the Gordon Brasted Trophy, while Romford were finally beaten in a penalty shoot out in the Essex Senior League Cup final. This success was matched off the field where a tremendous effort saw the facilities at the Brentwood Centre improved to enable the club to successfully apply for promotion to the Ryman Isthmian League. The management team of Steve Witherspoon and Amin Levitt led the team to more success 2007/08. There were good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy but, despite amassing an impressive 77 league points, they finished sixth in the Ryman Division One North and just missed out on a play-off place. Owing to family commitments, Steve Witherspoon stood down at the end of the 2007/08 season, and new manager Carl Griffiths and assistant Scott Canham had to rebuild the squad after a number of that successful team moved on. Despite this, the team made a tremendous start to the Ryman League season, remaining unbeaten until mid-November, and eventually finished in third place, but were beaten by Waltham Abbey in the playoff semi-final. The start of 2009/10 season saw another change of management with the experienced Les Whitton taking over. A season of consolidation ended with a mid-table position but in January 2011 Les stood down and Steve Witherspoon once more took over and he led the team on a remarkable run that only ended with an extra time defeat in the Ryman North play-off final at Wingate & Finchley. The next two seasons saw a mid-table finish and for the 2013/14 season, Les Whitton returned as 1st team manager until he stood down in November. Adam Flanagan and Danny Dafter were then appointed as joint managers and the team made good progress,

picking up enough points to move them comfortably clear of the Ryman North relegation zone by the end of the season. In 2014/15, with much of the same squad from the previous season, including ten players that had progressed through the youth setup, they exceeded all expectations by finishing fourth to reach the Ryman North play-offs. The season then had a perfect ending with a penalty shoot-out win over AFC Sudbury in the semi-final and an amazing second half performance resulting in a 5-0 win against Thurrock in the play-off final, meaning promotion to the Ryman Premier for the first time. The two managers, Flanagan and Dafter, both moved on after this success and the Club appointed Dean Holdsworth as their new manager. Dean played for Wimbledon and Bolton Wanderers and had previously managed at Redbridge, Newport County, Aldershot Town and Chelmsford City. But in November 2015, Dean stood aside due to increased business commitments and the experienced George Borg was appointed as his successor. However, George also had business commitments and was quickly succeeded by Mike Flanagan assisted by Chris Smith. However, the team were relegated from the Ryman Premier Division at the end of the season. As the Club began a new era in Ryman North, former Wadham Lodge manager Tony Ievoli was appointed for the 2016/17 campaign. Tony stood down in March 2017 and Craig Shipman took over as manager and steered the team away from relegation for next two season, followed by a mid-table finish in 2018/19. The 2019/20 season saw a new committee and a new manager in Ryan O’Rawe, a former Brentwood player who returned in a player/manager role. But the Club parted company with Ryan in February 2020, with Adam Flanagan returning for a second spell as manager until October 2021 when Rod Stringer was appointed with the aim of taking the club up to the Isthmian Premier again.

SATURDAY 2ND OCTOBER | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 146 Maldon & Tiptree ended a run of three consecutive defeats with a last-minute 3-2 victory over Brentwood Town back in October. Despite the inclement weather, the pitch held up superbly and Maldon were able to produce a free-flowing, passing style of football out of the blocks. The Jammers created the best chances in the opening 20 minutes as, first, Shomari Barnwell sent a volley over the bar before by a bullet header from Charlee Hughes rebounded back off the frame of the goal. Against the run of play, though, Brentwood were gifted the lead in the 20th minute. After clearing the original cross, Ted Collins dropped a second ball into the area, to the delight of Josh GRAY who tapped home into an empty net from two yards out. Despite going a goal behind, the visitors didn’t stop believing and created a number of further chances. Bradley McClenaghan, Sam Cornish and Laste Dombaxe all had chances of their own, whilst Malachi Napa bent a free-kick from the edge of the box straight into the defensive wall. Hughes was next to miss his chance, before a Maldon counter-attack that looked destined for goal saw McClenaghan’s effort blocked by the defender. From the resulting corner, the Jammers found their equaliser. Despite the hosts clearing their lines initially, the ball arrived at Lordon Akolbire 25 yards from goal. After an exquisite first touch, AKOLBIRE drilled the ball into the bottom corner of the goal to draw Wayne Brown’s side level on the stroke of half-time.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs BRENTWOOD TOWN

As the rain continued to pour, Maldon started the second half in dominant fashion, with Brentwood looking content with the occasional counter-attacking foray. Dombaxe and Barnwell were once again unable to convert chances that fell their way whilst, at the other end, Collins made an impressive save from close-range to keep the match level. With both sides pushing for the game’s next goal, Collins was on hand once again to deny Andrew Freeman whose effort looked destined for the top corner, before Barnwell had an effort for the Jammers cleared off the line. Brown made a double change as the game entered its final quarter, with Napa and Dombaxe replaced by Scott Kemp and Aaron Williams-Bushell. As Maldon appealed for handball in the penalty area, Brentwood broke forward with a counter-attack. Richardson led the way, putting Daniel OGUNLEYE through on goal and the Brentwood forward made no mistake, blasting the ball into the roof of the net and restoring the home side’s advantage. This built belief in the hosts and Brentwood looked destined for a third goal, but only a superb sliding tackle from Martyn Stokes broke up an ominouslooking attack. Home skipper Richardson wasted a chance to make it 3-1, but Brown’s men would make the miss prove costly. Efforts from Williams-Bushell and Kemp were both blocked, but the home goalkeeper could only parry the ball to BARNWELL who converted from inside the six-yard box to level the game for the second time in the 87th minute and tee up a grandstand finish. The late drama continued into stoppage-time, with Maldon dealing comfortably with a Brentwood free-kick and the resultant clearance landing at the feet of Kemp whose hold-up play allowed his Jammers team-mates to drive forward in attack. His superb pass across the face of goal found Brian MOSES, who emphatically buried the ball home to seal three points and an exciting late comeback on the road.

CLUB HISTORY

In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

16

MALDON & TIPTREE vs BRENTWOOD TOWN

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took

the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth

place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.

After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on

a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.

ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.

INTRODUCING

THE JAMMERS WAYNE BROWN FIRST TEAM MANAGER
