ello to everyone tuning in to our rearranged game against Tranmere Rovers this evening. Tranmere, of course, played in the EFL Trophy final at the weekend against a very good Sunderland team. After a difficult start to the season, Tranmere have proven what a good side they are and they are one of the teams going for an automatic promotion spot. I know that our reverse fixture resulted in a very heavy defeat at Prenton Park - we’ll be doing all that we can to make sure that’s not replicated tonight and also try to get some more points on the board. Even though we’re at home, we’re clear underdogs, given the situations the two clubs are in. However, sometimes that can bring out the best in some teams. Let’s hope tonight is one of those occasions. Looking back at our draw with Colchester on Saturday, I’d like to focus on the positives. We got a clean sheet, and that’s something we have had nowhere near enough of this season, and it was also our second game unbeaten. That might seem silly to some, but if you look at our overall form, that has to be a positive. I’m seeing a bit more spirit from the lads and I feel that we’re becoming harder to play against. We had to make some changes to the team after Jake Eastwood, Sam Habergham and Joe Bunney all picked up injuries last week. We were fortunate to have such an experienced keeper in Macca to come straight in and I thought Harry Clifton did a very good job filling in a left back which is obviously not his main position. I thought Colchester started the game better than us and later had a five-minute spell in the second half, but other than that I felt we were the better team for the majority of the game. I think half-time came at a good time for them because we were well on top at that point. Just before the break, we had a good chance to get ourselves in front through Lenny but unfortunately it came too quickly at him and it flicked the crossbar.
I’M SEEING A BIT MORE SPIRIT FROM THE LADS AND I FEEL THAT WE’RE BECOMING HARDER TO PLAY AGAINST
Overall, I think the lads now have a bit more belief in themselves. I know it’s a big ask - I’m not going to dress that up - but we have some big games coming up which I feel are going to be key. Some of the lads were out on their feet on Saturday because they are giving their all for the cause and that’s exactly what I want to see from them. If they can keep doing that, I believe we can start winning games and that still gives us a chance. Keep the faith, Paul Hurst

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Evening everyone,
I hope you’re all keeping well. Obviously it was disappointing to not get the win on Saturday but I really do feel our last three performances have given us something to build on. Hopefully we can turn these draws into wins. I watched a programme this week called Daryl Jacob: Being a Jockey (as Cheltenham Festival is on) and I thought I’d say it’s a great watch if people would like a look behind the scenes at what sport can be like. Whether you like horse racing or not, it’s interesting to see what sportsmen go through on a day-to-day basis outside of the absolute top level. The travel, eating, scrapping around for wins and the toll it all takes on your family at times; but also the unprecedented buzz it can give you as well. Anyway, it’s well worth a watch, hopefully after you’ve watched us do our talking on the pitch tonight!
I REALLY DO FEEL OUR LAST THREE PERFORMANCES HAVE GIVEN US SOMETHING TO BUILD ON
Stick with us, UTM! Macca

elcome to this evening’s rearranged game against Tranmere Rovers. We will certainly have to be at our best against a team pushing for promotion and in good form. Rovers put in a fantastic display against League One Sunderland in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley on Sunday and were unlucky to lose by one goal. When we played them earlier in the season we were comprehensively beaten and they showed on that day just what they are capable of. Of course, we have a much changed team and new management since then, and recent displays give cause for some optimism despite the results not yet reflecting performance. Hopefully that will start tonight.
MARINERS TRUST
We published some numbers last week about iFollow and the importance of it in terms of revenue. The numbers also give a lot of food for thought about its future role after crowds return. For those who missed it you can see the full table of season to date subscriptions by going on to our website www.marinerstrust.co.uk. If you didn’t see it here are the headlines: • • • • • •
Average passes League 2 home fans Top 20% passes League 2 home fans GTFC average passes for home games Average passes League 2 away fans Top 20% passes League 2 away fans GTFC average passes for away games
443 641 802 775 1,099 1,060
The numbers for home fans do not include the free passes given to season ticket holders for every home game hence why they are lower than the away figures. We rank at the top for home games which is probably due to selling season tickets much later than others and consequently selling fewer as the implications of restrictions became clear. Nevertheless the numbers are very encouraging given our league position. As you would imagine, clubs like Bolton and Bradford, with very big supporter bases sit right at the top and then other clubs who are having good seasons such as Cambridge and today’s opponents Tranmere are also doing well. Others are Mansfield, Southend United and Leyton Orient. With EFL passing most of the revenue on this season, we calculate that net of VAT iFollow will generate circa £300k for the club which has been vital during these times of no match day income. This has raised the debate as to whether or not live streaming should continue once crowds return. The obvious argument against is that home attendances will be significantly reduced and supporters will choose to watch from the comfort of their armchair, particularly now that they have got used to it. On the other hand, live streaming has opened up the games to a much bigger audience, especially exiles who cannot get back for home games. Evidence suggests we have a higher proportion of exiles than most as witnessed by our fantastic away followings. Before the pandemic there was a blackout for 3pm Saturday games but midweek games could be screened. The numbers for these games do not reveal a significant downturn in attendances by either home or away fans. I think all of us would agree that as good as it is to able to watch the games, there is nothing to beat actually being at the stadium; not just for the atmosphere but the social interaction that we all miss so much and previously took for granted. The challenge for the clubs is to make match day a great and affordable experience with live streaming playing a supporting but not competing role. The EFL have recently conducted a survey on this by emailing supporters and we look forward to seeing the results. At first we were instinctively opposed to live streaming once crowds return but we are now open minded and ultimately will support whatever is best for the club based on the evidence. Enjoy the match, UTM

STEFAN PAYNE
IN THE SPOTLIGHT Stefan Payne was within seconds of making a dream debut for The Mariners. Half an hour after coming off the bench against Stevenage last month, Payne scored a dramatic 93rd minute equaliser that looked to have earned a valuable point. However, what happened at the other end of the pitch cruelly stole the limelight away from Town’s new frontman. Payne only became a Mariner five days before the game, after signing a one-and-half year deal from tonight’s opponents Tranmere Rovers. The 29-year-old scored four goals in 21 games for Rovers last season as they finished 21st in League One and were relegated. With opportunities at Prenton Park few and far between this season, the powerful striker jumped at the chance to team back up with his old boss Paul Hurst. Hurst first signed Payne when his Shrewsbury Town side were deep in relegation trouble back in January 2017. His two goals in 12 games helped The Shrews preserve their League One status and, after making his switch from Barnsley permanent, he top-scored with 14 goals as Shrewsbury reached the League One play-off final and final of the Football League Trophy in 2017-18.
CAREER:
Croydon, Sutton United, Fulham, Gillingham, Braintree Town (Loan), Aldershot Town, Sutton United, Macclesfield Town, Ebbsfleet United, AFC Hornchurch, Dover Athletic, Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town (Loan), Shrewsbury Town, Bristol Rovers, Tranmere Rovers.
The Lambeth-born striker appeared for Croydon and Sutton United as a teenager before signing for Premier League Fulham in 2009. After failing to make the breakthrough at Craven Cottage, Payne had short spells with Gillingham, Aldershot Town, Sutton United (again), Macclesfield, Ebbsfleet United and AFC Hornchurch where he plundered 31 goals in 46 games. His form earned a move to Dover Athletic where he scored 40 in a two season stay at The Crabble. He later signed for Championship outfit Barnsley in 2016 before joining Shrewsbury, Bristol Rovers and Tranmere. Payne’s known for not being afraid of making his presence felt, so he should be looking forward to tonight’s game against the club who were paying his wages until January!

Grimsby Town U18s 2-0 Burton Albion U18s Our under 18s beat Burton Albion 2-0 on Tuesday morning at the Linden Club. The Mariners should have been ahead within 30 seconds after a great team move saw Boyd square the ball to Essel who shot at the keeper from close range. Both teams struggled to cope with the windy conditions, but Town created the best of the chances. Adlard fired over and Potts dragged an effort wide before Essel eventually gave Town the lead after a neat passing move that started at the back. With the half-time whistle looming, Burton put plenty of crosses in the box but the Town back line stood strong and dealt with the threat well. The second half was contested mainly in the middle of the park early on, with neither team creating any clear cut chances. Burton looked the most likely to make something happen but their attempts at goal from distance didn’t cause Town keeper Boyes too many problems. Town doubled their lead when Essel was brought down in the box and Potts stepped up to tuck away the resulting penalty. Burton put Town under some pressure but failed to find the back of the net, and both Tomlinson and Milner had chances to make it three to Neil Woods’ side. Town: Boyes, Markham, Zerboni, Bramwell, Smaller, Goundry, Tomlinson, Potts (Dennis), Essel, Adlard, Boyd (Milner). Subs: Dennis, Jacobs, Milner.

BERNARD FLEMING
Grimsby Town are saddened to learn of the death of Bernard James Fleming. Bernard was steeped in Grimsby Town, and in football generally in a variety of roles. He first joined the club at the age of 20 after being seen playing for Bomber Command at RAF Binbrook during his National Service. After a successful trial he signed for the Mariners in April 1957, originally as a winger, but later being converted to a full-back. Bernard spent the next four seasons at Blundell Park, playing under managers including Allenby Chilton, Bill Lambton, and Tim Ward, before leaving the club in the close season of 1961. He then moved to Workington FC, and a year later to Chester, where his former Town manager, Bill Lambton, signed him. Bernard made in excess of 100 professional appearances, but his playing career was unfortunately ended early due to an ankle injury. He was a football man in every respect! In 1970 Bernard re-joined the Mariners as the Youth Team Manager. He held the position for nine years, and worked with notable managers including Lawrie McMenemy, John Newman, Ron Ashman, and Tom Casey. His time in charge was highly successful, with his squads winning the prestigious Breda Youth Tournament in Holland and reaching the Semi-Final of the Youth Cup. Bernard also played a large part in the development and progression of many young players such as Kevin Drinkell, Tony Ford, and Kevin and Dave Moore. He also managed the reserves and was interim Assistant Manager for a short while to Caretaker Manager John Fraser. He later became Town’s Chief Scout, before scouting for Southampton, Peterborough, and Darlington football clubs. Returning to Blundell Park, Bernard became the Club Secretary from 1982-86. With his football background, his intervention ensured the signing of Mariners’ legend, John McDermott, who went on to achieve a record number of appearances for the club. Bernard was succeeded in his role by his son, Ian, who then became Chief Executive. Bernard later joined Southend United in a similar role, before taking up a number of other scouting posts. A true Mariner, Bernard remained in Cleethorpes and continued to support the club, attending home games into his eighties.
Town’s current physio, Dave Moore remembers his time under Bernard with affection. He told us: “Bernard was my first youth team coach when I came here. He was such a lovely, lovely man, but I was quite scared of him when I first arrived - when I was just 14 or 15. “We used to train on a Monday and a Thursday. Monday night was an hour and a half doing five a side at the Hereford School gym, Thursday night was at Blundell Park, the away team dressing room, 12-14 kids. Obviously, there was me, Tony Ford, Kev Drinkell, my brother Kev, Shaun Mawer and a few other local lads. We used to go straight out of the back of the ground, straight over Fuller Street Bridge and onto the beach, running on the beach and then back to Blundell Park. In the summer we would be piggybacking each other up the stands. There was a heading board at the back of the Main Stand where we used to go and practice headers for hours. Bernard and Brian Stratford were always there, looking after us. “The games on a Saturday were in the Northern Intermediate League then, I remember that Peter Sheffield coaches always used to pick me and Kev up at the college, Fordy used to get on there sometimes as well. We used to go to Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Leeds - we were playing all of the good teams. Obviously, we had a cracking youth team then and we did really well.
17
“Bernard was always sat at the front of the bus and the lads went to the back. We always used to have sandwiches on the way home, but if you lost, nobody dare say can we have a sandwich on the way home, so you would sometimes sit there for an hour thinking, we are nearly halfway home now is he going to say that we can have a sandwich. He would turn around and say come on get these sandwiches. “This was obviously when I was 16,17, 18, and when you get into the first team, Bernard would always be the first to say well done today son. “I’m absolutely sure that myself, our Kev, Tony Ford, Kev Drinkell, all the lads that came through at that level, Bernard was the first influence on our careers. “We didn’t start with Grimsby like they do now, they are seven, eight, nine, 10 now, I didn’t kick a ball until I was about 14 or 15. Bernard was certainly a big influence in me getting to be a professional footballer. And Kevin Drinkell, who was also part of Bernard’s fantastic team, and who went on to play for Norwich City and Scottish giants Rangers, appreciates the influence that Bernard had on his career. He said: “He galvanised that team. He certainly helped me as a young footballer. I and those players of that time have a lot to thank him for.” Bernard James Fleming 8th January 1937 - 7th March 2021.

26. PETER CLARKE With over 750 competitive appearances over a career spanning 21 years, Peter Clarke is a trusted figure within the Rovers rear-guard. Arriving in January 2020, the experienced defender formed a formidable partnership with Mark Ellis and made a lasting impression in his debut season at Tranmere. The Southportborn defender began his playing career at Everton, appearing in the Premier League for the Blues as well as undergoing loan spells at Blackpool, Port Vale and Coventry City during his time with the top-flight side. Moves later down the line at Southend United, Huddersfield Town Bury, Oldham Athletic and Fleetwood Town ensured that Clarke has operated in the top four tiers of the English pyramid. A commanding player with plenty of experience. Career: Everton, Blackpool (Loan), Port Vale (Loan), Coventry (Loan), Blackpool, Southend United, Huddersfield Town, Blackpool, Bury, Oldham Athletic, Bury (Loan), Fleetwood Town.

28. DAVID NUGENT
Wallasey-born Jay Spearing moved to Prenton Park in the summer, becoming Mike Jackson’s first signing as Tranmere Rovers manager. Spearing progressed through the ranks at Liverpool’s Academy at an early age and would go on to make a first-team breakthrough for the Reds. The 32-year-old midfielder made a total of 55 appearances in all competitions, winning the 2012 League Cup during his Anfield stay. EFL experience followed in the form of spells at Leicester City, Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool, with Spearing clocking up over 250 appearances across the Sky Bet Championship and League One. An experienced leader on the pitch, the tenacious midfielder captained both Bolton and Blackpool and brings leadership qualities to Prenton Park. Spearing has recently been in fine form for Rovers.
England international David Nugent joined Tranmere on loan in February from Preston North End. The 35-year-old has been one of the Football League’s most prolific marksmen for almost two decades. After breaking through at Bury, he spent three years with Preston North End where he was capped by the Three Lions. An FA Cup winner with Portsmouth, Nugent then switched to Leicester City and scored 59 goals in 180 appearances - helping to Foxes to the Premier League. Spells with Middlesbrough and Derby County followed before he returned to Deepdale in 2019. Nugent is yet to score for Tranmere in seven appearances, but with a pedigree like his, it’s only a matter a time before the veteran striker finds the back of the net for his new club.
Career: Liverpool, Leicester City (Loan), Bolton Wanderers (Loan), Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers (Loan), Blackpool.
Career: Bury, Preston NE, Portsmouth, Burnley (Loan), Leicester City, Middlesbrough, Derby County, Preston NE.

SIX
OF THE BEST
TOWN 8-0 TRANMERE 14TH SEPTEMBER 1925
vs TRANMERE ROVERS By John Kirk
Wednesday to Bolton Wanderers in their very first League Cup match 6-2, and then produced six goals again at Tranmere, four of them scored by Derek Williams, brother of keeper Clarrie whose last game for The Mariners coincidentally was against today’s opposition on 19th September 1959. Unusually, Ron Rafferty didn’t score in this game. There can’t have been many high scoring games of the time when Ron didn’t help himself to one or more! Town had started the game on fire, with seven wins and three draws in the first ten matches, but by the time Tranmere came to Blundell Park, the 4-1 Mariners victory was an isolated one in a disappointing end to the season.
One of Town’s biggest-ever league wins was against Tranmere in the promotion season of 1925-26. The fact that Town won at Blundell Park was virtually a given – they didn’t lose a single game in the league or cup in Cleethorpes, and from the end of November they only lost two games in the league home or away! In this game Joe Cooper scored a hat-trick, Jimmy Carmichael scored, and Frank McKenna scored a brace. Town had beaten Tranmere 10 games earlier, when they won 6-1 at Blundell Park towards the end of the 1924-25 season.
TRANMERE 1-2 TOWN 29TH APRIL 1968
TOWN 6-0 TRANMERE 10TH JANUARY 1939
After the tonking they got from Town in 1926, Tranmere would be pleased not to play in Cleethorpes for a while, and it wasn’t until the 3rd Round of the FA Cup 1939 that they had to. That season Town would go all the way to the semi-final where they met Wolves in front of the largest-ever crowd at Old Trafford. But Tranmere had to be overcome first, and Town put out a defence that most Town fans can reel off without a second thought – Tweedy, Vincent, Hodgson JV, Hall, Betmead, Buck. Fred Howe led the forward line, and scored a couple, as did Beattie, Cyril Lewis and Ned Vincent scored the others. The victory arguably launched Town’s best attempt to lift the FA Cup, though that was stymied by the enforced absence of George Tweedy and the injury to stand-in keeper Moulson right at the beginning of the game at Old Trafford.
TRANMERE 3-6 TOWN 29TH OCTOBER 1960
Possibly Town’s best away performance on the Wirral was in October 1960. The Mariners had beaten Halifax the previous Saturday at Blundell Park by 6-1, lost on
26
Town had already beaten Rovers at BP six weeks earlier by 3-0, and did the double over them with this 2-1 victory to complete the double (which they also achieved versus Southport and Scunthorpe) but it was a bittersweet victory. A dreadful season couldn’t be rescued by a brilliant finish and the Mariners were destined for their first ever stay in Division 4. The five goals scored against Tranmere were all scored by Dave. Dave Worthington scored the two in the April game, whilst Dave Wilson (2) and Dave Boylen scored at Blundell Park. How’s that Rodney?

TRANMERE 0-1 TOWN 25TH NOVEMBER 1995
In his eight games for the first team, Bonetti had set Town alight. We had a good team including John McDermott, Gary Croft, Graham Rodger, Mark Lever, Jim Dobbin, Gary Childs and Livvo, but Bonetti was the icing on the cake. Town’s touch of Italian was worth the entrance money on his own, and when he scored away at Rovers he was fulfilling the promise of the £50,000 Town fans paid in bucket collections for his “image rights.” Clearly Tranmere were impressed with him, as they signed him a few months after the “Chicken Wings” incident at Luton.

TOWN 5-2 TRANMERE 27TH NOVEMBER 2018
Well worth waiting for. This was one of those matches where Town scored just about every time that they had a shot. The game started well for the away team when they took the lead on 10 minutes, but Harry Clifton pulled the teams level after 32 minutes. Wes Thomas and Harry Davis put Town in a comfortable position each side of half time, but Rovers pulled one back on the hour. Nerves were settled with a fourth for the Mariners from sub Mitch Rose eight minutes from time, and the fifth went in from Elliott Embleton in the final minute.

PAUL FUTCHER CLASHED WITH JOHN ALDRIDGE IN THE 90S
Personal memories include the normally placid Paul Futcher and John Aldridge having some handbags at Tranmere in the nineties, and in the same decade I was told by a burly steward to put away the cheapest possible camera as I took photos at Prenton Park. Obviously, judging by the vast numbers of videos taken at grounds these days, I was just 30 years ahead of my time... and somewhere, I still have that camera. I doubt anyone taking videos in grounds these days will be able to say that in 2050!

CONNECTIONS:
IVANO BONETTI The midfield maestro played for both Grimsby Town and Tranmere Rovers in the mid-90s. When the Shaggy-haired Italian joined The Mariners from Serie A club Torino in September, it’s difficult to explain the level of excitement felt around the whole town. You see, Bonetti had real pedigree. By the time he arrived at Blundell Park, the midfielder had twice won Serie A with Juventus (85-86) and Sampdoria (90-91) and played in the 1992 European Cup Final at Wembley. To put the signing into context, it’s a bit like Sami Khedira or Gonzalo Higuain rocking up in Cleethorpes! Bonetti genuinely sprinkled stardust onto Brian Laws’ team in the early part of the 1995-96 season. His intelligence and craft on Town’s left flank created countless chances for the likes of Steve Livingstone, Neil Woods and Jamie Forrester to convert. Thanks to our little magician from Brescia, we climbed to the top of Division One in November and were looking like promotion contenders. Town fans were flocking to Blundell Park to catch a glimpse of Bonetti’s skills first hand and were calling for the club to sign him permanently. With the board unable to pay the £100,000 fee demanded by the American management company who bizarrely held the rights to his ‘services and image’, supporters formed the ‘Ivano Bonetti Fund’ in an attempt to raise the required fee. Thanks to donations from fans all over the world (and after Bonetti himself stumped up half of the cash), he was able to sign a deal until the end of the season and The Mariners could begin to dream of promotion. But Brian Laws’ side dropped into midtable after failing to register a league win during December and January. Then after a dressing room bust up following defeat at Luton, Bonetti suffered a high-profile fractured cheek bone. Despite featuring for Town three more times, Laws and Bonetti’s relationship had broken down and he left at the end of the season having made 22 appearances and scored three goals. Bonetti found himself a free agent in 1996 and Tranmere boss John Aldridge acted quickly to sign the Italian who he described as being the “chief culprit” in Town’s impressive performances against Rovers the season before. Bonetti fever hit Birkenhead just as it did Cleethorpes a year earlier. Despite a handful of stellar performances (his assist and winner against Portsmouth will live long in the memory), the enigmatic midfielder failed to live up to his initial billing and he made just 15 appearances for Rovers. A short spell with Crystal Palace in the Premier League followed in 1997 before the Italian returned to his homeland for the next three seasons. In 2000 Bonetti became playermanager of Dundee and managed a 6th and 9th placed finish in the SPL before he was sacked. Although Bonetti never took either The Mariners or Rovers to the Premier League, those who saw him in action will testify to his abundance of natural skill and sublime technique.

AGAINST THE ODDS
27 years ago, The Mariners managed an unlikely victory against Tranmere Rovers in their own backyard. Pat Bell recalls the game that had everything
I
n the 1993-94 season, the Mariners visited Prenton Park twice. The first, a League Cup tie, is the better remembered. Four goals down in injury time, a Nigerian who had taken up football in India and was touring England in search of a contract, came on as sub. In high contrast to all that had gone before, he made a bee-line for goal, shot and scored. That was the night the cult of Chima was born. The second visit was on 5th March 1994. I nearly didn’t go. It meant a ten-hour round trip through the Welsh hills, mocking me with more reliable ways to enjoy a fine Spring day. You have a hope you dare not express that gets you out of bed, but, having won just twice since New Year’s Day, we were four points above the relegation zone. Tranmere, featuring John Aldridge and Pat Nevin, were in contention for the play-offs. The odds were not in our favour. After ten minutes we were behind, lax marking allowing time for a cross and an unopposed diving header. It was all the more deflating because we had been playing quite well until then. From the restart, we worked the ball to the right. Gary Childs passed in-field to Clive Mendonca, his back to goal. Mendonca shielded the ball then laid it back into the path of Childs, who had cut in from the wing. He played a one-two on the edge of the penalty area and shot into the bottom corner of the net. No Tranmere player had touched the ball since their goal. I remember this game more for how I felt than the detail of the action, but that goal is a moment of clarity, a cameo of Alan Buckley’s first Grimsby team at its best.
GARY CHILDS
From then on, it felt like the trip was going to be worthwhile. Tranmere’s League Cup run had ended the previous week with a controversial semi-final defeat, and that day they harboured a sense of grievance, contesting the blandest of decisions, ultimately tipping the ref in their favour. Grimsby just got on with it, playing to the whistle and playing better than the opposition. We took the lead before half-time, but the goal is a blur; next day, I read in the paper it was scored by Craig Shakespeare.
30
In those days, there was a misconception that if a team played good football they could not be hardworking. Grimsby were both. We were carrying several injuries and the pitch at Prenton Park was dark with sticky mud. As it became more difficult, as players began to tire, we just dug in. It was a team performance, everyone working hard to be as effective as they could be even on a day that was not suited to the flickering passes of Childs and Tony Rees, the twists and turns of a Dave Gilbert dribble. We were watching players we had seen develop over years, PAUL CRICHTON aware of their fallibilities, and remembering enough of their good days to forgive them a few bad moments, as long as the effort was there. For we were part of the effort. Chima, returning after breaking his leg, was back on the subs bench. When Tranmere scored, a knot of supporters had tried to start up the chant of “Chee-ma” but when he did join the action with Town 2-1 up it went almost unnoticed. It was the whole side we were rooting for. Towards the end of the game, with the Mariners under increasing pressure, Paul Agnew was sent-off for a late tackle. He had not played well but he was applauded every step of his long walk from the pitch. In his disappointment, Agnew could make no gesture in return, but his eyes were fixed on us, a mute acknowledgement of our support.
after it, away from goal. No danger, but he trips. There is no Town defender within two feet of him, or so it seemed from the away paddock, 120 yards from the action. Nevertheless, the ref awards a penalty. Delirium. No coherent thought but a cacophony as a few hundred Town supporters tried to articulate their rage. Stillness. John Aldridge standing at the edge of the penalty area, Paul Crichton on the goal-line, both waiting for the whistle. The whistle blows and Aldridge shuffles forward and strikes the ball low to his left. It looks an almost perfect penalty but Crichton is diving the right way. The ball bobbles. It may have struck Crichton’s hand, or the post or both, but it rolls wide to safety. Hysteria. Another, quite different cacophony. There is time for the awful thought how silly we’ll look if Tranmere nevertheless score in open play, but not time enough for them to fashion another chance. Grimsby, against all rational expectations, have won, and it feels like we have struck a blow for the forces of light.
The last ten minutes lasted an hour and the referee allowed injury time to stretch towards eternity. There were few clear-cut chances but incessant pressure, a succession of crosses. It was a test of resolve, and we were resolute.
Except it is only a game. At quarter to five, I was ready to rain curses on the people of Birkenhead, whose team cheat their way to lucky penalties. But at 2.30, those same people had formed a chatty little friendly society to make sure they did not mislead me when I asked directions to the ground, and at five o’clock they poured out peaceably, the police amiable, all tension left behind. The fierce emotions of the moment cooled to leave a warm, enduring glow and the memory of a perfect sporting day.
But then. Relief, at first, as a stray ball ran harmlessly across the penalty area. A Tranmere player chased
