ello to everyone tuning in to our game against Cheltenham Town at Blundell Park this afternoon. Cheltenham are having another very good season after missing out in the play-offs last season and are in a very good position to achieve automatic promotion this time around. We know today will be a really tough test. However, the lads should take heart from our recent performances and go into the game knowing if they maintain their levels, they can give any team in this division a run for their money. That’s exactly what we did on Good Friday against a muchfancied Salford City side and, in truth, I felt the players deserved all three points and were unfortunate not to get them. We obviously got off to the perfect start thanks to Harry Clifton’s goal but I thought we continued to look a threat for the rest of the first half. We knew there was going to be a reaction from Salford in the second half and in the final few minutes unfortunately they nicked an equaliser. Credit to Touray for his goal but there were clearly two players in offside positions when the ball was played up field and from the footage we had Henderson was also offside and competed with Luke Hendrie prior to Touray receiving the ball. That was just one of the big decisions on the day which went against us. We were told at the end of the game that the referee was going to have a look at the incidents but that does not help us. There was a clear handball in the first half and he also needlessly stopped play when Harry Clifton was one-on-one with their keeper. Frustration and anger were definitely two emotions that myself, the staff, players and I’m sure those of you watching, felt at the end of the game. Despite their late equaliser, we had a chance to win it right at the death when Lenny almost got on the end of a Greeny cross but their defender just did enough, albeit he did so by pushing our striker with two hands in his back as he went to shoot! Friday was our sixth draw out of our last seven games and kept our unbeaten run going. Frustratingly, I think we’ve created the best chances in those draws and could have quite easily won a number of them. People talk about luck evening itself out over the course of a season so we are either due quite a bit in the remaining fixtures or we had a lot earlier in the season before I arrived! However, while there are still games to play and points to be won, we can’t allow ourselves to be distracted by the ‘what might have beens’ and results happening elsewhere. Our focus, once again, will be on trying to win our next football match, which as I said will be a difficult challenge but one I’m sure the players will throw everything at. Keep supporting the lads. UTM, Paul Hurst

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:

Afternoon all,

As I said on the radio after the game, we don’t have any time to feel sorry for ourselves at the moment. Although I would say that anyone who watched the game on Friday would see we didn’t have much ‘luck’. However, I believe you make your own luck, to a degree, so we’ll dust ourselves down and go again. Our unbeaten run has been a great building block for us but everyone in the group is aware that we need to start winning games.

OUR UNBEATEN RUN HAS BEEN A GREAT BUILDING BLOCK FOR US BUT EVERYONE IN THE GROUP IS AWARE THAT WE NEED TO START WINNING GAMES

I genuinely hope you’ve all had a good Easter and not had to do as many Easter egg hunts as me and enjoyed a lot more chocolate and treats than we have! UTM, Macca

ROLLIN MENAYESE

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Rollin Menayese has pretty much been an ever present for The Mariners since he joined in January. The big, athletic centre back has helped shore up Town’s leaky defence over the last couple of months and his performances seem to be improving every time he pulls on a black and white shirt. The 23-year-old is currently on-loan from Mansfield Town, a club he only joined in the summer following a three year spell with Bristol Rovers. Menayese was a regular for The Stags earlier in the campaign when Graham Coughlan (his former Gas coach) was in charge, but since Nigel Clough’s appointment, the centre half’s opportunities at Field Mill had been limited and he chose to join The Mariners for the rest of the season. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but raised in South Wales, Menayese used to be on the books at Cardiff City as a teenager. After his release from their academy, he signed for Weston-superMare and put in a string of fine performances for the non league club in 2016-17. That summer, he signed for Bristol Rovers and featured for their U23’s before being promoted to the first team. He gained experience on loan Swindon Town in 2017-18 and Aldershot Town in 2018-19 and went on to make 23 appearances for The Gas last season ahead of his move to Mansfield. Commanding in the air and quick enough to provide excellent cover for the back four, Menayese has been one of Town’s bright sparks since the New Year. Supporters will be keeping their fingers and toes crossed that he can keep up his form for the remainder of the campaign.

CAREER:

Weston-super-Mare, Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town (Loan), Aldershot Town (Loan), Mansfield Town.

MARINERS TRUST

G

ood afternoon and welcome to this afternoon’s game against Cheltenham who are having a great season and are deservedly right in the mix for automatic promotion and the play-offs. It will certainly be a tough game, as they all are, but hopefully we can rise to the challenge and a repeat of the result earlier in the season would be very welcome! As you will have seen, the takeover took a twist at the eleventh hour last week with Tom Shutes withdrawing from the consortium. This was a bitter blow and came completely out of the blue for both the club and the other members of consortium. As disappointing as this is, we have to move on and Jon and Dave are working hard with the board to get to a resolution with Jason and Andrew who, despite the setback, are still positive about taking over. Fans will need to remain patient for a little while longer but hopefully a solution will not be too far away. We have just drawn the 100 Club for March and the winners are as follows: 1st prize £200 2nd Prize £50 3rd Prize £25 4th Prize £10

Stuart White D Maltby Chris Parker Joanne West

A full list of winners for the last year can be found on our website www.marinerstrust.co.uk/100s-club.

FANS WILL NEED TO REMAIN PATIENT FOR A LITTLE WHILE LONGER BUT HOPEFULLY A SOLUTION WILL NOT BE TOO FAR AWAY

This is an important part of our fundraising with 50% of all subscriptions going back into the prize fund and the other 50% we retain for our funds. The draw is open to anyone and each entry costs £5, payable by standing order. There is no limit to the number of entries and obviously the more people subscribing the bigger the prize fund. To join you can download a form by clicking here or contacting us at enquiries@marinerstrust.co.uk. Hopefully you will have seen some of the images of the Fanzone we have been posting on social media. We would like to thank Mark Hodson for the designs and Kevin Atkins for the paintings both of which have brought the project to life and shown supporters a glimpse of what to expect for the start of next season. As mentioned previously, we will shortly be asking supporters and local tradesmen for any help they can provide. Please contact us if you think you can help. Hope you enjoy the game and fingers crossed! UTM, The Mariners Trust Board

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN U18s GRIMSBY TOWN U18s Neil Woods’ U18s beat Huddersfield Town 2-1 in the semi final of the Youth Alliance Cup last week. The Mariners flew out of the traps and went close through Tomlinson, Smaller and Adlard inside the opening moments of the game. After five minutes Town took the lead when Tomlinson was brought down in the box. The winger picked himself up and dispatched the spot kick to open the scoring. Against the run of play, Huddersfield equalised from a long-range shot. The Terriers then began to grow into the game but the Town midfield and backline stood firm and looked a threat on the counter attack. Just before the break, The Mariners made it 2-1 after Goundry headed home an inchperfect Tomlinson free-kick. Despite being behind, Huddersfield controlled possession in the second half, but Town continued to look a threat on the break. Davey, Branwell and Khouri in Town’s midfield battled well, while the backline blocked everything that was thrown at them. Smaller and Goundry were solid and there were some excellent last-ditch tackles by Scott and Blakeley. The Mariners had to withstand intense pressure during the closing stages of the game but they did enough to win 2-1 and progress to the Northern Final. TOWN: Boyes, Scott, Blakeley, Davey, Smaller, Goundry, Tomlinson, Branwell, Essel (Hodgson), Adlard (Stratton), Khouri. SUBS: Stratton, Jacobs, Hodgson, Milner, Markham.

Talented left sided defender Hussey has been one of the first names of the team sheet for Cheltenham this season. The 32-year-old joined The Robins three seasons ago following a two year spell with Sheffield United. Since then, he’s made more than 100 appearances for Michael Duff’s side. Hussey began his career with AFC Wimbledon in non league before moving to the Championship with Coventry City. After three years and 61 appearances for the Sky Blues, the defender rejoined The Dons for a season before signing for Burton Albion and Bury where he clocked up over 100 appearances between 2013 and 2016. Hussey spent the 201718 season on loan at Swindon Town from Sheffield United and moved to Whaddon Road after his release from Bramall Lane.

Box-to-box midfielder Liam Sercombe has been a shining light in The Robins’ engine room this season. The 30-yearold has scored eight times in 34 appearances - also making him their second top scorer! Sercombe moved to Cheltenham in the summer following his release from Bristol Rovers. The classy midfielder joined The Gas for a fee believed to be in the region of £150k in 2017 and became a regular at the Memorial Ground during his three years at the club. Sercombe is a product of Exeter City’s academy and between 2007 and 2015 he made 263 appearances for The Grecians in League One and Two. Prior to his move to Bristol Rovers, Sercombe had a two-season spell with Oxford United where he won promotion to League One in 2015-16.

May has been the bright spark in the Cheltenham front line since signing from Doncaster Rovers in January 2020. The speedy attacker hit six in 14 last season following his move, and this season the 27-year old has 11 goals so far to his name. May had spent the majority of his career in non-league football until he secured a move to Donny. After being released from Millwall as a youngster due to his size, the striker featured for a number of non-league sides before hitting 39 in 47 games for Erith & Belvedere and later 43 in 55 for Hythe Town. During his four years with Doncaster, he played over 100 times, scoring 23 goals - 11 of those coming in the 2018-19 season. May scored Cheltenham’s goal in the FA Cup fourth round match with Manchester City and will definitely be a nuisance for the Town defence this afternoon.

Career: AFC Wimbledon, Windsor & Eton (Loan), Coventry City (Loan), Coventry City, AFC Wimbledon, Burton Albion, Bury (Loan), Bury, Sheffield United, Swindon Town (Loan).

Career: Exeter City, Oxford United, Bristol Rovers.

Career: Billericay Town, Chatham Town, VCD Athletic, Erith & Belvedere, Farnborough (Loan), Hythe Town, Doncaster Rovers.

OF THE BEST

vs CHELTENHAM By John Kirk

PAUL BOLLAND IN ACTION DURING THE 2005-06 PLAYOFF FINAL DEFEAT IN CARDIFF

CHELTENHAM 1-0 TOWN 28TH MAY 2006 AT CARDIFF

OK, let’s get this one off my chest, without mentioning the scoreline, or the match. Down to Cardiff on the club bus, with Dale. Into the ground, couldn’t get a wifi signal for ages, and then only a weak one (National Stadium eh?). But we did get a message. There was a concern that our players shirts didn’t have the right League flashes on the sleeves! Could we check? This was ages before the players arrived or the crowds let in. Down to the changing rooms which took more than a bit of finding. Did they have the right flashes on the sleeves? I have to confess that after all this time, I can’t remember! Probably did have. After the game, (I told you I wouldn’t mention it!) stayed to wrap things up. By the time that was done, all the exits were locked. What’s worse than being in a ground where we haven’t gone up in a play-off final? Being in a ground all night after we’ve lost a play-off final! But we didn’t have to. Round and round and round, upstairs, down stairs, follow the exit signs, follow spoken instructions, round, and round and round again. Eventually, we were out and back on the bus back to civilisation. Or at least the sort of civilisation where you’re not doing an impression of Theseus and the Minotaur. The highlight of the weekend: seeing our first grandchild, born six days before. Every cloud and all that.

TOWN 1-1 CHELTENHAM 1ST OCTOBER 2004

Despite being founded just nine years after The Mariners, the clubs avoided one another, even after the Robins had been promoted into the League in 1999 under Steve Cotterill. But eventually we did meet in Division 4... or whatever it was called then. Andy Parkinson scored our goal in a 1-1 draw at Blundell Park. The return at the end of January at Whaddon Road saw the Mariners victorious in a five goal thriller with Terry Fleming scoring our first goal in the 13th minute and Michael Reddy in the 56th and then again in the 85th minute!

CHELTENHAM 0-3 TOWN 14TH OCTOBER 2005

In those early meetings, The Mariners seemed to like playing at Cheltenham. Town were already cruising to a comfortable win in the final minute when Gary Cohen scored the third, after Paul Bolland and Michael Reddy had put us in the driving seat. Three games from the end of the season (and that play-off final) The Mariners completed the double with the only goal of the game at Blundell Park, from Gary Jones. All that remained were the two final games of the league season (both draws) and the double over the Imps in the play-off semis, and then a planned third straight victory at Cardiff...

CHELTENHAM 1-3 TOWN 13TH OCTOBER 2020

13th October… and Town’s very first win of this season was down at Cheltenham! Owura Edwards scored The Mariners’ – and his - first on 23 minutes, Williams pulled the scores level on the half hour, before James Tilley added a second after 39 minutes for us. Montel Gibson ensured victory with virtually the last kick of the game. We haven’t met Cheltenham all that many times, but there have been a high percentage of crucial matches between the clubs. This time, there’s unfortunately a lock-out rather than that 2006 lock-in but we’ll all be glued to our devices and hoping for a good result!

CHELTENHAM 2-3 TOWN 17TH OCTOBER 2017

After the play-off defeat, Cheltenham returned to Division 4, but they had the Indian Sign over us both in the league and in non league where we both ended up! It wasn’t until October 2017 that we returned to winning ways – and on their patch again. The game was over by half time. Siriki Dembele put us in the lead after 13 minutes, and although Cheltenham drew level, Danny Collins and then Siriki Dembele scored in the three minutes before the break. The Robins could only score a consolation goal five minutes from time, and all was well with the world.

TOWN 1-0 CHELTENHAM 16TH FEBRUARY 2019

Just over two years ago, Wes Thomas scored the only goal of the game four minutes before half-time. In the squad that day were just three players likely to be in today’s line-up. Macca, Luke Hendrie, and coming on from the bench, the versatile Harry Clifton, who came level on games played with his namesake, the silkyskilled Brian Clifton, during the Walsall match.

Sackings, signings and survival The Mariners have pulled off many ‘Great Escapes’ over the years, but 20 years ago we had a controversial sacking, exotic imports, inspired loan signings and a final day showdown. This is the story of the 2000-01 campaign.

T

he winds of change were blowing through Blundell Park in 2000-01. After guiding The Mariners to a memorable double in 1997-98 and First Division survival two years on the trot, Alan Buckley was inexplicably sacked two games into the season. The board of directors had clearly lost belief in the legendary Town boss, who’d failed to register a victory in the 13 games leading up to his departure. That said, his sacking came immediately after a draw at Portsmouth. Were two games really enough to make that sort of judgement?

set-piece specialist) in the engine room. It was exciting to see foreign players in a black and white shirt, but neither of them added any real quality to our team and often looked quite out of their depth.

Within a week of his sacking, Lennie Lawrence already had his name on the door of the manager’s office. ‘Lennie’ arrived with a reputation for achieving great things on a limited budget. He’d worked miracles during his time in charge of cashstrapped Charlton Athletic. He took them to the top-flight in 1985-86 and he achieved the same feat with Middlesbrough in 1991-92. His stock had fallen a fair bit after two inauspicious spells in charge of Bradford and Luton, but the Town board obviously thought Lawrence could bring some fresh ideas to the job. In his first game in charge (a 0-2 defeat at Crewe), Town lined up in an unfamiliar 3-4-1-2 formation. Steve Livingstone, Paul Raven and Paul Groves played in a back three, while Kingsley Black featured in a ‘free role’ behind the strikers. After years of 4-4-2 under Buckley, the change came as a bit of a shock for the players… and the fans! Stuart Campbell became his first signing, joining on a seasonlong loan from Leicester City. But over the next few months, players from all over the world were invited to Blundell Park to try and earn a contract. One of the first was David Nielsen, a flamboyant former Danish U21 striker who joined on-loan from FC Copenhagen. Nielson burst onto the scene with a goal in his second appearance (a 3-1 win against QPR) and then he grabbed the winner against West Brom a few games later. His energy, goals and trademark somersault celebrations made him an instant hit with Mariners supporters. But despite the silver boots and theatrics, Town were languishing towards the bottom of Division One. Lennie added Knut Anders Fostervold, a big Norwegian defender, and Dutch midfielder Menno Willems on shortterm loan deals. Both were thrown into the first team, at the expense of our more established players, without either playing in England before. The additions allowed Lennie to tinker with his formation again with Fostervold playing mainly on the left of a back three and Willems (the so-called

30

Shortly before Christmas 2000, Lawrence pulled off his most high-profile Town signing when he somehow talked the Chinese international captain Zhang Enhua to move 5,000 miles away from home to play for The Mariners. Unlike Fostervold and Willems, Enhua’s playing style was a natural fit for the English game and he quickly became an important part of the Town defence. His physicality and desire to compete for everything made him an excellent central defensive partner for Paul Groves as Lawrence began to favour a more traditional back four. Enhua even popped up with vital goals against Burnley (1-0), Bolton (2-2) and Wimbledon (1-1) as results began to improve. However, Town’s season was turning into a fight for survival. By mid-March, Lawrence’s side hadn’t won for five straight games and relegation was starting to look a real possibility. After he’d failed to sign Nielsen on a permanent deal and with Bradley Allen struggling with injury, the goals had completely dried up. With one final roll of the dice left, Lawrence turned to Fulham reserve team striker Lucas Cornwall. On paper, it was a signing that smacked of desperation, but Cornwall was exactly what the team was lacking – that ‘spark’ in attack. The 20-yearold led the Town line brilliantly in the 1-0 win at relegation rivals QPR, he grabbed a brace in the superb comeback against Tranmere and he scored the goal in the unlikely 1-0 win at West Brom. Cornwall’s performances inspired Town to four wins in his first eight games and by early April it looked like The Mariners had done enough to preserve their First Division status for another season. But after three consecutive losses it all went down to a final day showdown against Fulham - the team who’d amassed over 100 points that season and had already won the title. It wasn’t going to be easy. Just shy of 9,000 crammed into Blundell Park for the game dubbed by the press as the ‘Million Pound Match’ because of the amount of cash The Mariners were in line to receive from a lucrative new TV rights deal. Against the odds, Town won 1-0 thanks to a scruffy goal from skipper Paul Groves. It was a great win but the outcome could have been very different if Jean Tigana’s side had something to play for. Luckily, they didn’t, and Town claimed a much-needed victory - just in the nick of time.
