ood afternoon to everyone tuning in for our game against Bolton Wanderers at Blundell Park. Bolton have been the form team in League Two for the last couple of months and they are now in a great position to achieve automatic promotion this season. With that in mind, we know we face a really difficult challenge as we attempt to pick up some much needed points. If you look at the league table, the point against Cheltenham in our last home game is a good result, but we wanted all three. I thought we played really well in the first 20 minutes and thoroughly deserved to go ahead when Lenny tapped in from close range. However, Cheltenham are towards the top for a reason, and they responded well to going behind. We talked a lot about their long throws being a threat before the game, and although their goal came from one, I’ve studied the footage and defensively we didn’t do too much wrong. Sometimes you have to admit when someone is a real handful and, in truth, it’s a good header by the player. Cheltenham had the wind for the second half so we expected it to be tough. Despite that, I was disappointed with the way we began the half, but then I felt we came back into the game as the half wore on. They had chances to win it, and so did we through Hans first and then Greeny in the last minute. Apart from maybe the first 10-15 minutes of the second half, I thought it was a good performance. I can’t fault the players for their effort, commitment and good football they played at times in difficult conditions. I think it’s hard on this group of players who are playing week-in, weekout, because I don’t think they are a bottom-of-the-table team. However, the problem is that’s the situation we are in. Looking back at our game against Bradford last week, I thought we did okay and more than matched an outfit who are trying to get into the play-offs. We changed our shape for the game and I think they struggled to cope with our system. We created a couple of decent chances to get ourselves in front but they got the goal just before half time and, in truth, it papered over their cracks a bit. The sending off at half-time then certainly made our task more difficult than it needed to be in the second half. We had to change shape to try and find a way back into the game and I thought we had more than enough of the play and continued to create chances. Other than them hitting the bar once, I don’t think they put us under any real pressure. Genuinely, it didn’t seem like we were a man light which was credit to the players. The frustrating thing is that they kept the clean sheet, got the goal and ultimately won the game. We are now into the final few weeks of the season and there’s no avoiding the dangerous position we are in. However, with six games still to go, we are still in the fight and we will keep fighting right until the bitter end. UTM, Paul Hurst

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Afternoon everyone,
I hope you’re all well and enjoying the next steps on the road to normality in the real world. Clearly last week was bitterly disappointing and it’s another game where we could have come away with a result, even with 10 men for the second half. We have to look at ourselves though because most games we have done enough to get a result, or win. It didn’t help being down to 10 men but, being as honest as I can, we all make mistakes. It’s not down to me, or us as players, to judge. All we could do was be professional in the second half and try and control what we could on the pitch. Unfortunately, with every game that passes, the task becomes that bit harder. However, while it’s still possible, we won’t be giving up. I can promise that. UTM, Macca

GILES COKE
IN THE SPOTLIGHT Experienced midfielder Giles Coke has been a regular in The Mariners engine room of late. The 34-year-old joined Town in February after a registration issue had originally put his move to Blundell Park in doubt. The former Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town midfielder began the season with Hereford in the National League North but after making 11 appearances for The Bulls, Coke was allowed to train with The Mariners as a free agent in January with a view to earning himself a deal with the club. After impressing Hurst during his trial, the new Town boss wanted to offer him a contract but a registration mix up meant that deal wasn’t able to be done outside of the transfer window. Luckily, Coke was able to speak to the National League and convince them to terminate his registration, leaving him free to become a Mariner. Since then, he’s featured 12 times and was even handed the captain’s armband for last weekend’s trip to Bradford City. At 34, Coke has added a huge amount of experience and maturity to the Town midfield - two qualities which are vital when you are in a relegation scrap. After breaking through at Mansfield and impressing at Northampton, he moved to the SPL to play for Motherwell before signing for Sheffield Wednesday. In his five years at Hillsborough, he played over 100 times for the club, the majority at Championship level. He also had loans with Bury, Swindon and Bolton during his time as an Owl. He signed for Ipswich Town in 2015 but injuries blighted his stay at Portman Road and also cut short his spell with Chesterfield in 2017-18. A frustrating period with Oldham Athletic followed before Coke dropped into non league for the first time in career to sign for Hereford in the summer. The intelligent and elegant midfielder always looks cool, calm and collected in possession - characteristics Paul Hurst would have undoubtedly wanted to add to his midfield when he was on trial. With the registration error now behind him, let’s hope Coke can call on all of those years playing in the Championship to help lead us away from relegation.

MARINERS TRUST Good afternoon and welcome to this afternoon’s game against Bolton who are pushing strongly for automatic promotion and so once again it will be a very tough game. Every week we seem to comment that our results do not reflect performances, and that was true again last week despite playing half the game with 10 men. Hopefully today, if our play deserves it, we will get our just rewards. Today we kick off early as a mark of respect to HRH Duke of Edinburgh whose funeral takes place later this afternoon. Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen and all of the Royal Family. Our thoughts are also with young Town fan Adam Barber who tragically died on Monday following a freak accident. Our thoughts are with all the family and we are happy to have made a donation to his funeral costs. If you would like to donate, here is the link to Adam Barber’s funeral Just Giving page. We were delighted to see the announcement that the Club and 1878 Partners Ltd have identified a solution to the proposed change of ownership of GTFC. We commend both parties for the speed and determination to get to this following the set back last week. The Mariners Trust board have met and agreed unanimously to support both the change from PLC to Private Company and the resulting change and updating of the Articles of Association. In anticipation of questions arising from this we have put together some FAQ’s: Who are 1878 Partners Ltd? 1878 Partners Ltd is a new company set up by Jason Stockwood and Andrew Pettit each with 50% shareholding. This is the holding company that will buy the shares from John Fenty providing the resolution is agreed. Why do the Club and 1878 Partners Ltd want to change the company from a PLC to a Private Limited Company? A key reason is that under the rules of a PLC, anyone securing more than 29.9% of the shares are obliged to make a general offer to buy all other shares. This is not the case with a private limited company. What are the other differences between Public and Private Companies? The other key difference is that a public company has more administration and regulatory rules to adhere to, particularly around the detail of accounts that must be made public. The key reason a company would want to be public would be to raise capital by having shares openly on sale to
the public. With the company being private it will be much simpler to operate. Does this mean we will get less information? In some circumstances this could be case with the detail of the accounts filed at Companies House much less for a private company than a public company. We do not, however, believe this will be the case for us with 1878 Partners Ltd committing to operate in a very transparent manner. How many votes are needed for the proposal to be sanctioned? For this proposal to be accepted 75% of votes cast must be in favour. As this is a poll vote, votes are counted according to value, and so for instance, if everyone voted then the Trust vote would count as 13.5% (our current shareholding). The Trust have mentioned previously about a members vote to decide about the offer from the consortium to buy the Trust shareholding in GTFC. Will this still happen? If the company was to remain public then 1878 Partners would be obliged to offer to buy our shares and this would have been a decision for members. If the company moves to a private limited company, a vote would no longer be needed as there is no obligation to offer to buy our shares. Why isn’t there a members vote to decide if the Trust proxy vote will be for/against the resolutions? As a board we are unanimous that we should vote for the resolutions presented. We know the overwhelming wish of members and other supporters is to help facilitate the takeover. So we do not think that a vote is necessary. I have got some shares of my own, what happens to them? You will remain as a shareholder. There is a provision that 1878 Partners have included in the notice to shareholders, which enables you to contact the club at philip@gtfc.co.uk if you wish to sell your shares. This offer is done without obligation, on a non legal binding basis, and is aimed at those with small share holdings. Will I still be able to buy shares in the future? Shares will not be on general sale in the future. Any share dealings would be on a private basis and so any purchases would
15
be for existing shares. Please also note sales are currently suspended while the voting process takes place. The document to shareholders mentions Tag Along, what does that mean? This has been included by 1878 Partners so that, if in the future they agree to sell on to new owners, the other shares in the company will “tag along” and the new owners would have to offer to buy them as well. This provides some security to those that are worried they will never be able to sell their shares in the future. The Trust statement mentions a B Corp, what is that? In the new Articles of Association, 1878 Partners have included a commitment for B Corporation Certification. This commits to operating the business for the benefit of the members as a whole and to have a material positive impact on the local community and the environment. This is something we are very keen to be involved with as it fits extremely well with our own values. More information on B Corp can be found here. Will there still be an AGM each year? Having an annual AGM is obligatory for public limited companies but not for private limited companies. 1878 Partners will decide if these will continue but, as we have already said, we have no worries at all about transparency to shareholders and supporters. Will the Trust retain the two board places? Yes - in all the discussions we have had, the two board places will remain. 1878 Partners are very keen to work with the fans and will be consulting as much as possible, starting with a fans survey soon after the takeover is complete. What happens next if the resolution is agreed at the EGM? Once agreed, 1878 Partners Ltd will immediately buy John Fenty’s shares and following that they will join the board with John stepping down at the same time. Jason will be appointed Chairman for a fixed 3 year term. Any other questions please email us enquiries@marinerstrust.co.uk. We intend to hold an open zoom meeting on this on Wednesday 21st April starting at 6.30pm. Please email us if you would like to join in and we will send you the access code.

NORTHERN YOUTH ALLIANCE CUP FINAL
Neil Woods’ youngsters slipped to a 3-1 defeat in the Northern Youth Alliance Cup Final at Blundell Park. Both teams made a bright start to the game but Adlard twice went close for The Mariners before Rochdale opened the scoring after a corner was flicked on and smashed home at the back post. Dale nearly doubled their lead after a string of poor clearances led to them hitting the bar from close range. HARVE Y TOMLINSON SCORED FROM THE SPOT Towards the break, Town had a sniff at goal when Khouri’s cross aimed for Adlard resulted in some excellent last-ditch defending. Rochdale flew out of the traps in the second half and scored almost immediately after the restart with a well-taken close-range finish. With Dale leading 2-0 and in firm control, the game started to slip away from The Mariners. Rochdale added a third when an unbelievable chip from 35 yards found the top corner. It was a goal which deserved to win a cup final. Town grabbed a consolation late in the game through a Tomlinson penalty but it’s Rochdale who will now progress to the National Final. However, this was the furthest our Under 18s had reached since winning the competition 11 years ago. TOWN: Boyes, Scott, Blakeley, Davey, Smaller, Goundry, Bramwell (Potts), Khouri, Essel (Milner), Adlard, Tomlinson. SUBS: Potts, Jacobs, Stratton, Milner, Grist.

Town made a positive start and both Adlard and Tomlinson had opportunities to open the scoring. But The Mariners did break the deadlock when Potts’ free kick was headed home by Smaller just after half an hour. At the other end, Boyes had to make a smart save down to his left to keep Town ahead. The second half played out in a similar way to the first. County pressed high and put numerous balls in the box but the Town backline held firm. The Mariners went close to adding a second through Adlard and also Hodgson and Tomlinson forced the County keeper into making good saves. The away side put Town under lots of pressure but the youngsters defended very well as a team; blocking shots and winning important headers in their own box. TOWN: Boyes, Blakeley, Khouri, Davey, Smaller, Goundry, Tomlinson, Potts, Essel (Milner), Adlard, Hodgson (Braithwaite). SUBS: Milner, Grist, Braithwaite, Scott, Drinkell.

Hugely experienced goalkeeper Matt Gilks has been one of Bolton’s unexpected stars this season. After joining in the summer to work closely with his former teammate Ian Evatt and transition into a goalkeeping coach, the 38-yearold has become a regular since he was selected back in November. During his time as Bolton’s number one, The Trotters have emerged as promotion candidates. Gilks has played in excess of 500 games during his career, including 197 for his hometown club Rochdale and 200 for Blackpool - the team he won promotion to the Premier League with under Ian Holloway. While playing in the Premier League, Gilks was capped by Scotland and had spells with Burnley and Rangers. Over the last few seasons, the stopper has mainly been a squad player at his previous clubs. However, Gilks is said to have “fallen in love with the game all over again” at Bolton and looks set to play on for the foreseeable future at least.
Arguably one of Bolton’s most consistent performers this season has been Alex Baptiste. The veteran defender re-joined The Trotters in the summer after featuring six years ago during the 2013-14 campaign. The 35-year-old is a former teammate of boss Evatt, with the pair forming a great partnership while together at Blackpool under Ian Holloway; and his old pal has been able to get the best of the experienced defender with his performances being likened to Italy and AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini! Baptiste began his career with Mansfield Town and played close to 200 games for The Stags before signing for Blackpool. In five years at Bloomfield Road, he won promotion to the Premier League, played in the top flight and clocked up just shy of 200 games for the club. Since his days with The Tangerines, Baptiste has turned out for a number of Championship clubs and looked to be coming to the end of his career after rarely featuring for Doncaster Rovers last term. However, after winning over the fans and impressing his former teammate-turned-boss, Baptise, like Gilks, could be a Trotter for a while longer.
Eoin Doyle is having another memorable season in League Two. The 33-year-old has so far notched 17 goals this term following his move in the summer from Swindon Town. Doyle top-scored for The Robins last season with 25 goals as they won the League Two title but chose the switch to Lancashire so he could be closer to his family home. The Dublin-born striker began his career in Ireland and his form at Sligo Rovers earned him a move to Hibernian. After a couple of years in the SPL, he joined Chesterfield and enjoyed a red-hot goalscoring streak during 2014-15 which earned him a big money move to Cardiff City. Despite being a regular under Russell Slade initially, he fell down the pecking order and joined Preston North End on-loan before signing permanently. The Irishman didn’t feature much at Deepdale though and spent time on loan at Portsmouth and Oldham Athletic prior to a two-year spell at Bradford City and later Swindon Town. Doyle is one of the best finishers in the lower leagues, so the Town defence will need to keep him quiet this afternoon.

SIX
OF THE BEST
vs BOLTON By John Kirk
Back at the dawn of time, when I thought it was OK to have a very temporary second team, I have to admit that it was Bolton Wanderers. OK, just for the one match, the 1958 FA Cup Final against Manchester United. Two Nat Lofthouse goals, the second when he barged Harry Gregg into the net saw them safely pick up the trophy. But first to our own FA Cup game and goalkeeping controversy…
1897 – FA CUP, FA CUP REPLAY AND FA CUP SECOND REPLAY: 0-0, 3-3, 2-3
In the previous close season, Town sold star keeper James Whitehouse for a record £200, and picked up Tom Cain for a not-inconsiderable £20. He lasted two games before being dropped and never seen in the Town goal ever again. His place was taken by “Nune” Wallace from Attercliffe. Nune had failed to star in the Attercliffe goal when Town buried EIGHT goals past him in 1894, but here he was in Grimsby and given the regular keeper’s jersey. That season, we were straight into the FA Cup “proper” rounds, and drawn against Bolton. The match at Abbey Park ended goalless, the game at Burnden Park ended 3-3 with Town goals from Rogers, Bell and Tommy McCairns, and so to the neutral Bramall Lane for the decider. Minutes from the end, Town were leading 2-1 via a Harry Fletcher strike and an own goal. But in the final few minutes, Wallace let in two very simple goals. He had always been known for erratic keeping, but there were allegations of him having taken a bung – never proven one way nor the other, and that was the last time he played for the Mariners. In the next match his place between the sticks was taken by Edwin Daw for his second and final game! For the last six games of the season
GRIMSBY TOWN 1901-02

George Hardie went in goal – and that proved to be his only games for Town! Four keepers, all seeing the start and the end of their Town career in a single season. That has to be a record?
TOWN 4-1 BOLTON 1ST FEBRUARY 1902
Bolton were of course one of the original founders of the Football League in 1888, four years before Town helped initiate the Second Division. The clubs had met in Division 2, in 1899-1900, but Bolton were promoted that year in second place, and then Town won the championship of Division 2 to gain their first experience of top-flight football, so the home win against such established elite as Bolton at Blundell Park by 4 goals to 1 was some achievement for our unfashionable club. Inside right Duncan Ronaldson did the damage with a brace whilst the others were added by “Cockles” Appleyard and “Happy” Nelmes. Town won by the same score in February 1931, also in the top division, in front of an unbelievably low crowd of 5,741 one of their lowest ever in the top flight. To be fair, the game was on a Tuesday afternoon in the middle of a bitter winter, and three days after they had lost at Everton in front of the biggest gate they had performed in front of up to that point (65,500).
1960 AND 1965 - LEAGUE CUP: 2-6 AND 4-2
Town fans will all know that our very first League Cup game was against the Trotters at Burnden Park when we were hammered (you’ll see what I did there in a minute!) 6-2, with Ron Rafferty scoring our first ever goal in that competition, and then doubling up for good luck! Four seasons later, and we were facing Bolton again in the League Cup, this time gaining revenge for that first game with a 4-2 victory. Rod Green (2), Ron Foster and Bobby Ross ensured a Town RON RAFFERTY victory, which then brought us up against Preston who were efficiently dealt with 4-0 with a Matt Tees hat-trick and the other from Ron Foster. That, in turn, brought us up against England’s World Cup Squad, or at least a significant part of it, playing for the Hammers (there you go – did you spot it coming?). In front of over 16,000, the teams couldn’t be separated, finishing 2-2, with our goals coming from Tees and Green. We did finally lose 0-1 at the Boleyn ground but hey – Germany – you’d have been chuffed with that! But did the Hammers goal cross the line? You can never be sure of these things.
TOWN 1-0 BOLTON 25TH SEPTEMBER 1982
The significant point about this game is that it is Town’s last victory against today’s opponents! After almost 40 years, I think we’re due another! Bob Cumming scored the match’s only goal.
TOWN 4-0 BOLTON JANUARY 1981
We had come up the previous season as Champions of Division 3, which had itself been our first season there after coming up from the fourth. We were going great guns, and seriously threatening a third straight promotion under the magical George Kerr. Town were in the middle of a nineteen game run where there was just one defeat… and that wasn’t to Bolton! Drinkell (2), Bobby Cummings, and Joey Waters cracked in the four goals with no KEVIN DRINKELL response, in front of 9,300 fans. Nine games later, we were up in 3rd spot, and playing in front of 12,000 home fans. 12,000, when we were on the verge of promotion to the top division!
BOBBY CUMMING
BOLTON 0-0 TOWN 2ND MAY 1983
Someone operating the big football computer in the sky must have been having a laugh when Town fixtures were announced. It turned out that the last three matches – Bolton, Burnley and QPR were to be against the eventual bottom two clubs, and the champions (QPR). Town were in a desperate situation themselves, but three draws – the one mentioned against Bolton, followed by a 1-1 draw against Burnley (Drinkell) and a final 1-1 draw with QPR (Cummings) was sufficient for us to be safe and the Lancashire rivals to go down to the third tier. Remember - the only way is up!

CONNECTIONS:
AIDAN DAVISON Davison may have been the man between the sticks when Town claimed a famous double in 1997-98, but he also had four years as a Trotter. Davison began his career in Newcastle United’s youth team in the late 1980s but after failing to earn a professional deal at St James’ Park, he signed for local non league club Billingham Synthonia. The young goalkeeper’s performances in the Northern League alerted the attention of many scouts and during the 1987-88 campaign he signed for Notts County. However, he only managed a single appearance for The Magpie’s during his two years at Meadow Lane before signing for Bury following a brief loan spell in 1989. The stopper, who’d just turned 21, also struggled to break through at Gigg Lane and spent time out on loan at Chester City and Blackpool ahead of joining Millwall, who became his sixth club in just three years. Luckily for Davison, he became a regular for Millwall between 91-93 and his performances even earned him the player of the year award.
Rather ironically, Davison signed for The Mariners (the team he’d help to relegate) ahead of the 1997-98 campaign and enjoyed arguably the best season of his career. The Town faithful got to see the goalkeeper right at the top of his game, as his stoicism and maturity helped make Alan Buckley’s defence one of the meanest in the whole of England. Though rarely called upon to make spectacular saves, Davison was a fantastic talker and had the knack of being able to anticipate what second division attackers were going to do before they even did! He began the 1998-99 season in equally fine form and was one of the main reasons why Town were mounting a serious play-off push in the First Division at one stage. However, with his contract up in the summer and a number of bigger clubs chasing his signature, the keeper didn’t feature too often during the second half of the season and Town’s promotion hopes began to fade. Coincidence?
In the summer of 1991, Davison was signed by Bolton Wanderers for £125k. Bruce Rioch, his old Millwall boss, brought him to the club to compete with Keith Branagan for the number one jersey at Burden Park. Over the next four seasons, Davison did exactly that, although he did spend a lot of time on the bench with Branagan often preferred. Bolton won promotion to the Premier League in 1995 and he made a handful of top-flight appearances as Wanderers finished bottom of the league. During his final year with the Lancashire club, Davison became a Northern Ireland international and featured in games against Sweden and Thailand and had spells on loan at Ipswich Town and Hull City before joining Bradford City on a free transfer in March 1997. The Bantams were deeply embroiled in a relegation battle at the time (with The Mariners) and he featured in 10 games for the West Yorkshire club as they successfully beat the drop.
Davison signed for Sheffield United on a Bosman but after just six months at Bramall Lane he re-joined Bradford City who’d recently been promoted to the Premier League. In three years at Valley Parade, he made almost 50 appearances before returning to Blundell Park for the ill-fated 2003-04 campaign and struggling with injury for the majority of it. After Town’s relegation, he moved to Colchester United and helped The U’s win promotion to the Championship in 2006 a couple of years before hanging up his gloves. Although Davison won’t ever be considered in the same league as Tweedy, Wainman or Batch, the 30 clean sheets he kept in the 1997-98 campaign still make him one of the best to don the number one jersey.

Programme editor Jack Johnson recalls the events which led to him attending his first Mariners game on 13th August 1994, an exciting 3-3 draw against Bolton Wanderers at Blundell Park.
I
was already aware of Grimsby Town long before I watched my first proper game. I’d been to a floodlit reserve game with my brother (to test the water) in the very early 90s and I have a memory of peering out the front room window at 5pm on a Saturday and watching what seemed like thousands of people walk down Grimsby Road. In this memory, I can still hear someone announcing the final scores on Grandstand as I try to pick out the silhouette of my brother who’d been at the game. My brother was 20 years older than me and was already a bit of a BP vetran by the time the 1994-95 season came around. He’d seen the promotions under Newman, Kerr and Buckley and travelled all over the country watching The Mariners. By the summer of 1994, he was clearly at peace with giving up his usual Saturday routine to take his little brother with him. Back then, Town offered a free junior season ticket with every full paying adult in the Main Stand. It was a great way of getting the next generation of fans hooked without fleecing parents or designated guardians in the process. Without that offer, perhaps I wouldn’t have become a Town fan? I remember attending the pre-season photocall day at Blundell Park the Sunday before the start of the season to get a look at the ground in the daylight and see the players I’d be cheering on from the stands. I have no recollection of how it happened, but somehow I ended up giving my thoughts on team affairs to Alan Buckley during a Radio Humberside recording. What I said when the microphone was thrust in front of me, I’ll never know. But I don’t even remember being made to feel silly by Buckley or the journalist. They obviously took the innocent advice of a six-and-a-half-year-old with the good grace the situation deserved. Afterwards I posed for a few photos around the ground and got an autograph from my adopted new favourite player, Jim Dobbin. To this day I don’t know why I picked Dobbin as my favourite player. Maybe he was the one who seemed most approachable? The night before the first game of the season, I remember being told that I’d be able to get a complimentary Wagon Wheel on the way into the ground thanks to a campaign the Grimsby Telegraph was offering. Much to my brother’s dismay, I honestly think I was a lot more excited for that than the game itself against a team I’d just learned the name of. Bolton Wanderers. On 13th August 1994, I walked with my brother down Grimsby Road to Blundell Park on a matchday for the very first time. Little did I know it would be a journey we’d make together hundreds of times over the next decade or so. Down Fuller Street, past the identical terrace houses that seemed to stretch on forever, and then on to Harrington Street where we came across a programme seller near the Main Stand
30
turnstiles. My brother purchased two programmes, one for me and one for him. I knew what programmes were because I’d seen his collection (under supervision, of course), so I was pretty excited to have one of my own. After being allowed to have a look at the cover and a quick flick through, he put my programme with his in a safe part of his coat. He’d already explained to me that it was good to get a programme from each game I attend because in the future I’d be able to look back and know which ones I went to and sometimes remember details of the game or occasion as well. How right he was. But I doubt he expected his little blonde haired six-year-old brother would go on to become editor of that programme. My memory of the game itself is pretty sketchy. I can remember being aware of how vivid my surroundings were though. The sun was beaming down on the action, which made the grass that shade of green that you only ever see at the beginning of a new season, and there were so many colours coming from the spectators in the crowd. Being a warm and sunny August afternoon in the 90s, there would have been plenty of eye-catching t-shirts and jackets on show. Something which also left an impression on me were the Bolton fans there were so many of the crammed into the Osmond Stand and I remember them being so loud. Every time Bolton scored, the away end exploded with joy and few overzealous supporters even scrambled onto the pitch to celebrate in front of Paul Crichton. In some ways, it seemed more exciting when they scored than when we did! For those who don’t know, the game ended up being a pulsating 3-3 draw and Clive Mendonca claimed an impressive hat-trick. In terms of a first game to go to, it certainly wasn’t a bad one! I kept returning to Blundell Park for the rest of the season and I remember snippets from the games I saw. Flashes of play that happened in front of me, goals which caused inexplicable mayhem and certain things that supporters around me said and did. By the final few games of the season, I’d obviously shown enough interest (and not missed too many games favouring trips to the cinema or a school friend’s birthday party at Fantasy World) to warrant me going to an away game as well. Almost 27 years have passed since then and I can’t wait to walk down Grimsby Road on a matchday, buy a programme from a seller outside the ground and watch a game of football at Blundell Park again. The next time I do it though, maybe I will be the one taking the next generation of Mariners supporters with me, just as my brother did in 1994? All we need now is the Grimsby Telegraph to do another Wagon Wheel promotional giveaway…
