ood evening to everyone tuning in for our game against Morecambe at Blundell Park. Morecambe are having a fantastic season and are very much in the hunt for automatic promotion. We know that we will have to produce another good performance if we are to give ourselves a chance tonight. Not only was I very pleased to get the victory on Saturday, it was also great to see us outplay a team who I think are the best in the division. We got off to a brilliant start when Jay (Matete) scored in the first minute but we continued to create opportunities for ourselves throughout the whole game. In fact, I don’t think we have created that many chances in any other game this season! However, we missed several good chances before we got the second goal and I did wonder at one point if it was going to be our day. Obviously I was disappointed to concede at the death but I think Bolton would have expected to have been on the scoresheet much earlier than they were. And if Macca hadn’t pulled off a couple of very good saves when it was 1-0, they could well have been. That said we created more chances on the day and thoroughly deserved the victory. It was a great win for us against a team who I’m sure will get promoted. But, in all honesty, we probably could have scored more! I thought all the players did very well but I wanted to congratulate Evan Khouri who made his full debut for the club. I’ve been quietly impressed with Evan for a little while and I know that Neil and Callum from the Youth Team speak very highly of him. He started on the left of a midfield four and I thought he showed good discipline, some quality on the ball and a competitive edge. It was an excellent performance by a young player in what was a very big game for him and the club.
IF WE CAN MAINTAIN THOSE LEVELS FOR ANOTHER 90 MINUTES, WE CERTAINLY GIVE OURSELVES A GREAT CHANCE
Saturday we got the victory and played well. Tonight, I don’t mind how we do it, as long as we get something from the game. However I am interested to see if we can replicate the performance from the weekend, as if we can maintain those levels for another 90 minutes, we certainly give ourselves a great chance of doing so. UTM, Paul Hurst

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Evening all,
Obviously it was very nice to pick up the win on Saturday and I’m sure everyone enjoyed their evening slightly more than recently. However, by Sunday morning it’s gone and that is football in a nutshell. Highs and lows come very quickly and change even faster! I’m sure plenty of people looked at other results - and I totally understand that - but for me, and I think I speak for all the staff and players too, it’s about what we do. If we win enough games, I’m still convinced we can do what we need to do. That’s all we can control, so that’s all we can focus on in my opinion. On a side note, driving around Saturday afternoon, it was so lovely to see the shops busy and people sitting outside pubs and cafes. I think it’s so important to try and savour the little things, because as much as this game can consume us all (and hurt us), the little moments in life are so important to enjoy. Please keep the faith and support. UTM, Macca

T
onight we welcome another team pushing for promotion and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate “The Shrimps” on a fantastic season. They are proof that it isn’t always about which team has the most resources and that team spirit plus organisation goes a long way. No doubt this will be another very tough match, but if we can match the skill and determination we showed on Saturday against Bolton, then it should be a very entertaining game. It was good to see that the club has offered professional contracts to three players from the youth team - Evan Khouri, Jaz Goundry and Luis Adlard. Hopefully all three will agree to sign and continue the conveyor belt of graduates that are being produced by Neil Woods and his team each season. Obviously there is no guarantee that they will go on to be first team players, but with hard work and willingness to learn, they stand a good chance. As well as these three, we also know that we have great potential coming through from the year below, and so the future is looking promising but we also know that funding for the academy is threatened if we get relegated. For the first season we retain 100% of the funding, but this reduces to 50% in the second season and nil after that. The funding pays for the staff and infrastructure needed for a Category 3 Academy which the club achieved on its return to the EFL. Whatever happens, hopefully we continue to generate first team players from the Academy for many seasons to come. As well as congratulating the three new graduates, we should spare a thought for the other lads who have not made their dream of achieving a professional contract. The statistics show that less than 1% of kids who join academies go on to become professional footballers and so rejection for the majority is inevitable but nonetheless heart breaking. As well as striving to produce good players, the academy prides itself on preparing the young men for life in the outside world and so hopefully those who haven’t made it will go on to put the skills they have obtained to good use. Also we hope that they continue to play at the best level they can achieve and who knows, one or two may still go on to be professionals which sometimes happens as players of that age mature at different rates. Good luck to everyone leaving the academy this year. You can help the academy by supporting any of the fundraising events that are organised by the YDA such as bike rides and golf days. The YDA also runs a monthly subscription scheme which provides rewards for various levels of contributions whilst raising vital funds for the Academy each month. The money raised by the YDA over recent seasons is currently earmarked for a joint venture with Oasis School to provide a much needed new 4G pitch. If you would like to join the monthly subscription scheme please email YDA@gtfc.co.uk for further details. Enjoy the match and fingers crossed. UTM, The Mariners Trust Board

JAY MATETE
IN THE SPOTLIGHT Jay Matete wasted no time at all giving Town the lead on Saturday and in the process he scored his first professional goal. With a little over 30 seconds on the clock against Bolton, the 20-year-old picked up John-Lewis’ knockdown, strode into the box and hit a low effort across Matt Gilks and into the far corner. The early goal set The Mariners on a path towards three points which could still be vital in the fight against relegation. Matete has been a standout performer for Town since he joined on loan from Fleetwood Town back in January. The exciting young midfielder has impressed with his close control, ability to ride challenges and eagerness to get stuck in at the drop of a hat - a trait he will probably need to refine over time, but one that has endeared him with Town supporters. The South Londoner was part of the Reading academy before he was offered a deal with League One Fleetwood Town three years ago. He made his professional debut last season for The Cod Army in the EFL Trophy and prior to his move to Blundell Park, he featured 13 times for Fleetwood this campaign. Matete has been a near ever-present in Paul Hurst’s midfield since he joined and the Fleetwood man is likely to continue to feature for the remainder of the season. Now he’s got off the mark, perhaps he’ll add a couple more helpful goals before his loan comes to an end next month?

A particularly youthful Mariners side drew 1-1 with Burton Albion at St George’s Park at the weekend. Town, featuring eight U16s and a U15, made a solid start in the game and had a few early openings - Adlard and Tomlinson forcing the Burton keeper into action. Burton then started to control possession and opened the scoring after Town JOSH SMALLER failed to clear a corner, and from the resulting cross, it was headed past Jacobs. Neil Woods’ side went in at the break 1-0 down. But The Mariners came out in the second half fighting and put the hosts on the back foot by applying pressure high up the pitch. Town had a penalty appeal turned down after Milner broke through the Burton line, but the ref didn’t think there was enough contact. However, Town continued to press and got their just rewards five minutes from time when Smaller smashed home from a corner. TOWN: Jacobs, Scott, Zerboni (Sims), Bramwell, Smaller, Grist, Tomlinson, Hodgson (Markham), Milner, Braithwaite (B. Dennis), Adlard. SUBS: Markham, D. Dennis, B. Dennis, Sims, Wilden.

Attacking midfielder Aaron Wildig is enjoying his most prolific season for Morecambe since he signed back in 2015. The 29-year-old has scored eight goals so far this season and he’s a real threat running beyond the attackers. Wildig began his career with Cardiff City and made 17 appearances for The Bluebirds in the Championship in 2009-10. However, following loan spells with Hamilton Academical and Shrewsbury, the midfielder moved to The Shrews on a permanent deal. Wildig won Player of the Year for The Shrews in their relegation season in 2013-14 and after falling out of favour under new manager Micky Mellon, he joined Kidderminster and Morecambe on loan - signing for The Shrimps ahead of the 2015-16 season. Since then, he’s been a regular at the Globe Area and has clocked up in excess of 200 appearances for the club. Under Derek Adams though, the experienced midfielder is playing some of the best football of his career.
Carlos Mendes Gomes is one of the most in demand players in League Two. The 22-year-old has been in fine form for The Shrimps this season, scoring 15 from 48 appearances, and it’s been widely reported that he’s a transfer target for Blackburn Rovers and Rangers. Senegal-born Gomes was once a member of the Atletico Madrid youth team before he moved to England to concentrate solely on his education. While studying at college in Manchester, Gomes turned out for non league West Didsbury & Chorlton and was spotted by Morecambe scouts in 2018. In his first two seasons, he was a bit part player at the Globe Arena, but this has been a real breakthrough campaign for the young winger. Along with his 15 goals, Gomes also creates many chances for his teammates - that’s why he’s being chased by the newly crowned Scottish champions!
Cole Stockton is now in his third spell with the club and has been the focal point of the attack since Derek Adams took over as manager. The 27-year-old is a big, traditional target man, who holds the ball up and brings others around him into play. That said, the striker has scored 12 times himself this season and this campaign is likely to yield the best return of his career so far. Stockton hails from Merseyside and spent the first six years of his career with Tranmere Rovers - his boyhood club. He scored 28 in 119 for Rovers before joining Morecambe on loan at the end of the 2015-16 season. Stockton resigned for The Shrimps on loan for the following season and struck 10 in 26 appearances. His form earned the big striker a move to Hearts but only played 15 times for the club in the SPL. Short spells at Carlisle United, Tranmere and Wrexham followed prior to his return to Morecambe ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Kirky’s greatest matches by the sea
By John Kirk
Never let it be said that we at Mariner Towers ever try to short-change our readers. We quickly realised that if we wanted to do six of the best versus Morecambe, we couldn’t truthfully get beyond five! And anyway, the best result at Morecambe was surely “The Bay!” Incredible police work there! (Other TV detectives are available). So with Morecambe being a nice seasidey place rather like our beloved Cleethorpes, I thought I’d take you for a tour of some of our greatest matches by the sea and maybe remind you of a day trip or two!
Southport – Lancashire coast Once managed by our late, great Paul Futcher!
New Brighton – On the Wirral And another Championship!
Now everyone must enjoy a day out in Southport*, especially if Town win 4-0 as they did in September 2015, with goals by Craig Clay, Craig Disley, JeanPaul Pittman, and Josh Gowling, who wrapped up the scoring by the first minute after half-time in front of just 1,320 fans (though that of course is 1,320 more fans than will be at the match today!). But attendances weren’t always that low. Indeed, in April 1956, 23,056 fans were shoehorned into BP to see the promotion decider from Division 3 North. Town had to wait until nine minutes after half-time to break the deadlock when Billy Evans crashed a pile-driver into the net at the Pontoon End, before top scorer Bob Crosbie added a second! Two more victories were to be played out before the season end, by which time Town were Champions, five points clear of Derby County! *Slight exaggeration to say that everyone enjoys a day in Southport. Those pigeons in the butcher’s window were looking a bit on the peeky side.
28
We had a spectacularly bad record against New Brighton, a club right on the Irish Sea near the mouth of the Mersey, opposite Liverpool, but on the final day of the 1925-26 season, every Town fan knew exactly where the football club was… at Blundell Park, and the only thing standing between Town, then heading Division 3 North, and promotion as Champions (and in those days, being Champions was the only way to promotion). Breathing down our necks was Bradford Park Avenue. If Town won, or Bradford lost, we’d be OK. Unfortunately, New Brighton’s keeper played a real blinder, and it wasn’t until just 15 minutes from time that Carmichael scored his 33rd goal of the season to send Town into the second division regardless of anything Park Avenue did.
Torquay It’s a long, long road a-winding
Zooming past Rhyl on our coastal journey of all the resorts … a place where we once played in the first round of the FA Cup, and won despite not scoring a goal (Rhyl scored twice for us – thanks lads!), we’ll end up in Torquay.
For the first away game of the season, a trip to Torquay, the longest of the campaign, is a bit Marmite – love it or hate it – get it over and done with, or leave for later in the season? In August 1989, we were getting it over and done with, and in fine fashion! Childs, Cunnington and back-flick specialist Tony Rees put Torquay to the sword, and recorded Town’s first victory of the season, as well as the first goals (we had drawn 0-0 at home to Cambridge, and lost at Boothferry Park in the League Cup which we avenged with interest at BP!). The season ended in promotion when we beat Wrexham 5-0 and SHAUN CUNNINGTON Birtles scored a hat-trick!
Bournemouth and Boscombe United now, has that more letters than Scunthorpe and Lindsey United, or fewer? These things used to matter.
Next stop on our anti-clockwise tour of the coastal resorts takes us to Bournemouth. There’s only the one game that we can talk about versus Bournemouth... our first ever visit to Wembley! We’d waited 120 years for this, and the victory at Burnley a month earlier had set up one of the greatest matches in Town’s history. The entire area went football mad. Coaches were hired from all over northern and eastern England, Dixons had never had such great publicity, the Town shop sold out of just about anything that was black and white. It was a great celebration seeing so many folk at the old Wembley Stadium wearing Town shirts, Town scarves, jester hats. The match went by and into extra time, when Wayne Burnett scored, arguably, the most celebrated Town goal in history as he flicked the ball from behind him to notch the
golden goal! What days! We won at Carlisle two days later as well! And most of us put in a full week’s work, somehow.
Brighton like Cleethorpes, but without a proper beach… or fish and chips I remember once going to Brighton in four minutes, but the trains are much slower these days.
Back in 1983, we were “stuck” in the second tier, and so were Brighton. PAUL We weren’t going up, and we weren’t WILKINSON going down, but we COULD beat Brighton 5-0 at BP! Paul Wilkinson scored a couple, Tony Ford, Gary Lund and Paul Emson scored the others. Unbelievably... fewer than 6,000 were in BP to watch this goalfest!
Scarborough That’ll be a win then!
Town have only met Scarborough six times, the first twice being in the FA Cup, and usually won by one goal. Autumn 1989 was a bit of a shocker as Town lost 3-1 on a ploughed field pretending to be a football pitch, but our final ever game saw us restore normal service with an emphatic 3-0 victory on our way to promotion from Division 4. Tony Rees scored two, and Mark Lever scored the other – bringing his total to the season to two! His other had been at Exeter. So that was Scarborough fare – played six, won five. And just to satisfy that earworm… it’s parsley, sage, rosemarie and thyme… or is it mint and basil? That’s your tour of the resorts complete. Hope you enjoyed your hols… now down to the serious stuff. Buckets and spades at the ready, let’s turn that tide...
KINGSLEY BLACK NETS AGAINST BOURNEMOUTH

KRISTINE GREEN: CHAIR OF THE MARINERS TRUST Kristine shares how she came to be a Grimsby Town supporter and Chair of The Mariners Trust. My introduction into a lifetime support of Grimsby Town wasn’t by usual means of parents or friends support. Neither of my parents are particularly into sport and none of my school friends were Town fans. My pathway came from my uncle Dave – he’d park his car at ours and walk from there, as we didn’t live too far away from Blundell Park. I remember from a young age hearing the roar of the crowd when Town scored. I remember talking to my uncle about football when he’d drop in after the game. He asked me one day if I’d like to go and I was straight in there and as he sat in the Upper Young’s, that is where my first game would likely have been. Two of my first games that I do remember was I think a televised game against Sunderland, that started but didn’t finish because of the snow. This was maybe the 9394 season? Others will remember better than I do! I’d got free tickets from school and sat in the Main Stand with a friend, who had no interest in football. It was possibly ‘Wembley Wrexham final’ cold so she was not disappointed that we got to go home early. Another was against Sheffield United and we lost, yet still I returned.
I’VE GOT VIVID MEMORIES OF BEATING SOUTHEND 4-0 AND STILL BEING RELEGATED LAST GAME OF THE SEASON BUT THAT WAS IT FOR ME AND I’VE BARELY MISSED A HOME GAME SINCE 30
The season that got me hooked was oddly the 96-97 relegation season, I’ve got vivid memories of beating Southend 4-0 and still being relegated last game of the season but that was it for me and I’ve barely missed a home game since. The following season was of course the season of dreams, I went to most home games but didn’t have a season ticket because I couldn’t afford one. I went to my first away game on my own too – a 4-1 doing over down at Ashton Gate by Bristol City. I remember that and subsequent games well, travelling all over the country on Bernard’s supporters bus. Dropping into his house on Heneage Road, working two paper rounds and washing cars to pay for it. I’d always stay for a chat as he knew my granddad, he worked with him down on the docks back in the day. That double Wembley season I was 13, around the same age as my daughter is now and I couldn’t imagine her boarding a coach to go off to the other end of the country. I think I got away with it because she didn’t really have a clue what football was about! Around this time I started hanging around the ground too. Back during this time the players would be at Blundell Park after training and the gate was always open so I literally walked in, dragging a non-football friend with me! I’d spend a couple of hours getting autographs and pictures, and I loved it. Hanging round the open corner waiting and watching kit man Mike move stuff round and into the washing machines. The 2001-2002 season was the first time I’d go to every single game in a season. The season that I stopped going regularly on the coach, Liverpool away before I passed my driving test and drove to an away match for the first time. Just the small matter of Arsenal at Highbury in the League Cup like, white
knuckles down the A1 as it got busier and busier! The 52nd and last game was Millwall away, I went on the coach as I’d been out the night before. I wasn’t in the greatest of self-inflicted health and the game was a nothing game, if there is ever such a thing, but I wanted to go to complete the season.
WHATEVER DIVISION WE ARE AS A CLUB, WE HAVE TO STRIVE TO BE BETTER AND THAT MEANS DOING BETTER... WE’VE GOT SOME HARD WORK AHEAD OF US AND I’M UP FOR THAT
Over the next few years I’d get married and have kids, admittedly the away games became fewer when they were really young but it wasn’t long before we were carting them all over the country too. My eldest, who’s now 16, went to Shrewsbury and Oxford away at around 18 months before we were relegated into non-league. He can’t remember much of our time in the league before relegation and my daughter definitely can’t. She was only 18 months old when we went down, her first away game was a trip over to Tamworth. The non-league years allowed the kids to run about on terraces while we watched the game and by the time the promotion season of 2015-16 came, circumstances had changed. They were a bit older and were properly watching the football and in that summer I went through a separation. That was also the summer of Operation Promotion – I’d not really known much about the Trust then, maybe I should have but I suppose hindsight is a wonderful thing. I needed something to occupy my mind and I remember well walking into the Lower Young’s bar to pick up what I’d purchased and meeting Dave Roberts. I asked if any help was needed and that was the start of it – it’s all Dave’s fault. That October, I was elected to the board of the Trust, not really having a clue of how football operated behind the 90 minutes on the pitch. That season meant to my children what 97-98 meant to me, that’s not a lowering of my expectations of my team but an honest evaluation of the situation at the time. Those players became friends, some still are. Another season culminating in promotion and tears at Wembley, and then a promotional bus tour around Grimsby. I took so many pictures of the promotional parade of 97-98 but my daughter and friends got to take it that one step further by travelling with the players around town. She will never, ever appreciate how special that was but the pictures and clips seeing her peeping over the top of the bus will be forever memories for us. In the years since – on the field matters have stalled and we find ourselves fighting, I truly believe we are fighting, to stay in the Football League yet again. Personally, during these last five years, I’ve worked hard to educate myself on so many football-related topics, from safety and the Green Guide, to football policing, all the acronyms that come with it and fan engagement. During our time out of the League, a compulsory Supporter Liaison Officer (SLO) position had been created, so promotion meant there was a role. I did loads of research and put myself forward and I’ve loved both stints – doing that role actually made me realise what I wanted to be when I ‘grew up’. I enrolled at Uni to do a comms degree off the back of it and used my three years there to undertake more learning and loads of networking. It stood me in good stead for representing Grimsby Town and its fans during all sorts of situations, including election onto the Football Supporters Association (FSA) National Council and more recently their board. Even more recently I took on Chair of the Mariners Trust, which is of course a privilege. It doesn’t end there though, does it? Whatever division we are as a club, we have to strive to be better and that means doing better. I say that on a personal level too – we’ve got some hard work ahead of us and I’m up for that. UTM!

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.
