IN CHARGE:
PAUL ABRAHAMS WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR THE THIRD TIME IN TEN DAYS FOR YET ANOTHER ISTHMIAN LEAGUE FIXTURE UNDER THE LIGHTS. THE GAMES ARE COMING THICK AND FAST. TONIGHT’S OPPONENTS ARE FLYING HIGH AND WILL BE AS TOUGH A CHALLENGE AS WE COULD FACE. A WARM WELCOME TO TITLE CHASING AVELEY, DANNY, HIS STAFF AND THE TRAVELLING AVELEY SUPPORTERS.
I’m sure both teams will play their part in an entertaining encounter. Tonight’s opponents have had an impressive season to date and show a consistency and resilience to keep winning that you only see from title contenders. Tonight will be our fourth encounter of the season and we hope to be able to level the games two-apiece when the final whistle arrives. We arrive back at the home of football after a hard-fought victory against play-off chasing Dereham Town. Saturday’s 2-1 win sees us close the gap on the tail of the play-off places, albeit marginally. The game was as competitive as always and Dereham themselves are riding high and looking to break into the top five. After controlling much of the game, without really creating too many clear chances, we had to remain patient and finally got our reward from a rare set-piece goal thanks to a powerful header from recently signed George Winn. We have spent a lot of time focusing in on our set-plays of late and the importance of these, so it was great to see one finally come off. Decent chances presented themselves in open play and we failed to capitalise on our ball
dominance, whilst Dereham always threatened on the counter. A penalty gave our opponents a lifeline, but yet again, the boys don’t know when to give up and it took yet another injury time winner to take the deserved three points and send the Jammers fans home happy. This is the second game we were able to see the new partnership of Winn and Joe Turpin at centre-half and it’s shaping up nicely. In the absence of skipper Stokesy and Daniel Obi out injured for a few weeks, it’s a positive to have some solidity back in the heart of our defence - two games and no goals conceded in open play. Furthermore, it’s been a long time coming since any of our defenders have scored and to have both of them score on Saturday was great to see. Further positives were seeing Malachi Napa make his first start of the year and, just round the corner, Bryan Ifeanyi is back in training and will be back in contention for the weekend and the season run-in. Ten games left, 30 points to play for and it starts again here, against title-chasing Aveley. Enjoy your evening and thanks to you loyal Jammers for all your support as always! Paul

SATURDAY 12TH MARCH | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 173 Maldon & Tiptree kept their play-off hopes alive at Park Drive on Saturday thanks to a last-minute winner over promotion-chasing Dereham Town. Following the previous week’s disappointing draw, the Jammers made a few changes to the side with Emmanuel Martins, Scott Kemp and Malachi Napa being restored to the starting lineup, Napa making his first start since returning from injury. In a fairly non-eventful first half neither goalkeeper was forced to make a save of any note, with both sides struggling to record a shot on target. It was the Jammers who had the best half-chances of the opening period - firstly, Kemp was put through on goal by Ade Cole, but the Maldon captain miskicked his effort and saw it head wide of the goal. Kemp went close once again after smart play from Lordon Akolbire, with the full-back’s cross being diverted just wide by the Jammers’ striker. On the stroke of half-time, Joe Turpin had a chance to find the opener after a smart cross from Shad Ngandu, but the defender sent his header wide of the net. After a dominant first half possession wise, the Jammers came out in the second half looking

to break the deadlock and, in the 50th minute, Paul Abrahams’ side did just that. A corner from the right was delivered perfectly by Cole, finding George WINN who arrived at the far post to plant a bullet header into the back of the net, grabbing his first goal for the club. Having opened the scoring, Abrahams’ men had chances to extend their lead. Cole produced another superb cross from the left this time, but Olumide Oluwatimilehin was unable to convert from close range before Ngandu saw another chance go begging shortly before being replaced by the fresh legs of Rob Clark. In the 69th minute, Dereham were handed a route back into the game. A scuffle resulted in the visitors being awarded a penalty and the dangerous Adam HIPPERSON stepped up and made no mistake, blasting his spot-kick into the back of the net for the second time against the Jammers this season. Shomari Barnwell was introduced shortly after, in place of Malachi Napa. With both sides looking to find a winner, the contest was becoming increasingly physical and, with the game drifting towards a draw, the visitors gifted the Jammers a corner. Swinging in from the right again, Cole delivered a pin-point set-piece the ball was eventually turned home following a goalmouth scramble. Central defender Joe TURPIN was the man on hand to bag his first goal for Maldon, handing the Jammers a muchneeded three points in their bid for a play-off spot.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs AVELEY
Formed in 1927, Aveley played in local leagues until 1939 when club activities were suspended during the war until 1945. In 1946 the club was reformed and joined the Thurrock Combination. Aveley twice won the Essex Junior Cup, firstly in 1948 before retaining it the following year. Aveley gained Senior League status in 1949/50 and were elected into the London League, Division One. They were champions in 1951/52, also moving from Lodge Meadow to Mill Field during the campaign and promptly being nicknamed the Millers. They were champions again in 1954/55, earning them election to the Delphian League in 1955/56 where they competed until 1962/63 with little success. 1963/64 saw Millers join the Athenian League with full membership of the Football Association granted the following season. Arguably Aveley’s most successful campaign was 1970/71, reaching the FA Cup first
round as well as the quarter finals of the FA Amateur Cup, whilst going on to win the Athenian League as well. Aveley were elected to the Isthmian League in 1973/74, competing without success in Division One until they were relegated to Division Two North at the end of the 1985/86 season. The Millers did however achieve two cup successes during this time - the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy was won in 1979/80 and the Hornchurch Charity Cup in 1982/83. The 1989/90 campaign was a memorable one for the Millers. Promotion back to Division One was gained with a tremendous end of season run-in to finish second to Heybridge Swifts by two points. This was followed by a 3-0 victory over Premier Division St. Albans in the final of the AC Delco (League) Cup, making Aveley the first team from the lowest division to win this competition. After this, the club slipped
down to Division Three and cup successes were limited to appearances in the finals of both the East Anglian Cup and the The Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy in 1997/98.
A poor league season in 2006/07 was again compensated for by winning the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy for the second time in just three seasons.
The 1999/00 season started well with Aveley remaining unbeaten in the league until Christmas. A turn in fortunes saw them slip, however, and they would eventually finish ninth. This was followed by a sixth-placed finish in 2000/01.
After a disappointing start to the 2007/08 campaign, November saw the arrival of Rod Stringer as manager and fortunes turned. The Millers posted a string of impressive results together to finish the season in a mid-table position. 2008/09 saw the foundations that were laid the previous season bare their fruit, with Aveley winning the Ryman League Division One North title on the last day of the season in dramatic fashion away to East Thurrock United. In what was a tense finish to the season, the Millers set a club record of 11 straight away league wins and Rod Stringer was duly judged as the Manager of the Season for the division.
2001/02 was a real rollercoaster of a season that saw the club finish third behind Hornchurch and champions Croydon Athletic, winning promotion to Division 1 North. An excellent season for the Millers in 2002/03. Good runs in the FA Cup and Bryco Cup were capped off with an appearance in the Essex Senior Cup final. This did not go the Millers’ way, though, with Chelmsford City beating Aveley 5-0. The club progressed to the FA Cup third qualifying round that season too, eventually losing 2-0 to Canvey Island. A good run-in saw the Millers finish sixth in their league campaign. The 2003/04 season saw the club eventually finish in 14th place, whilst also matching the previous season’s performance by reaching the final of the Essex Senior Cup. This time a muchimproved display saw them go down 3-1 to local rivals Thurrock. The final game of the season was another cup final, this time in the East Anglian Cup, which saw a visit to Spalding United. This also finished in a 3-1 defeat for the Millers. 2004/05 was a disappointing season for the Millers’ maiden campaign in the Southern League, the club finishing in 15th place. Compensation, however, came in the form of the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy where Aveley beat Romford 1-0 in the final at the Mill Field, Simon Thomas scoring the only goal of the game. Another difficult season followed, on and off the pitch, as Millers ended the 2005/06 season with their third manager, Steve Browne, steering them just clear of the relegation places.
2009/10, Aveley’s first season in the Isthmian Premier Division, saw the Millers enjoy a great finish to the season with 12 wins from the last 14 games. It was a run of form that lifted the club into third place and set up a home semi-final play-off tie against Boreham Wood. Unfortunately, it was one step too far, and a 1-0 defeat saw the end of a fantastic season. Rod Stringer departed for Braintree Town at the end of that campaign, taking with him his management team and the whole playing squad. Subsequently, a difficult season was to be endured with Aveley needed a 3-2 win at Hastings on the final day to enable the club to stave off relegation by virtue of a reprieve. It was only a short-lived reprieve, though, with 2011/12 serving up much of the same and leading to relegation just a year after that final day escape. Justin Gardner was appointed as boss in February 2012 and began moulding a squad to push for an immediate return, going on to spend the entirety of 2012/13 in the play-off spots - the promotion tilt would eventually end at the hand of the Jammers, with Maldon & Tiptree beating Aveley in the play-off semi-finals. After many years of trying for a new stadium, 2013/14 heralded a new era for Aveley. Panning permission was finally granted in March 2014 for a new state-of-the-art facility to be built with work beginning on the new Parkside site in July 2016. The stadium would take a year to complete, and Terry Spillane was the man in charge to lead Aveley out at their new stadium in August 2017, opening with a visit from Dulwich Hamlet. Spillane would part company with the club within weeks though, and he was replaced by James Webster from Brightlingsea who had lifted the Regent up four steps in seven seasons.
A RECORD FA TROPHY RUN ENDED AT NOTTS COUNTY IN 2020
2018/19 would see the Millers miss out on promotion, finishing as runners-up to Bowers & Pitsea only to lose out in the play-off semi-finals once again, this time to Heybridge Swifts. That impressive form continued into the 2019/20 campaign too, with Aveley sat in second place again at the curtailment of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Millers also enjoyed a club-record FA Trophy run, reaching the quarter finals where they would bow out to Notts County in front of a record crowd for an Aveley fixture, with 530 travelling fans making up part of the Meadow Lane crowd of 4,893.

FRIDAY 22ND OCTOBER | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 322 Maldon & Tiptree suffered their second defeat in a row with an eight-goal thriller away to Aveley in this season’s reverse league fixture. New signing Phillip Brown-Bampoe made his debut for the Jammers as he was thrown straight into the starting eleven. But, despite dominating the opening stages, the Jammers were once again punished for not taking their chances in front of goal. Aveley sprung a counter-attack as Marlon Adyakwa broke down the left, and he crossed the ball to Manny Ogunrinde who headed home from inside the six-yard box. Things went from bad to worse for the Wayne Brown’s side just moments later, as the hosts extended their lead. A corner from the right found Ryan Scott inside the box, who had shrugged off his marker and volleyed home his effort to double Aveley’s advantage. Brown-Bampoe would miss a chance from close-range shortly after and the Jammers were once again punished in the worst possible fashion. A long ball forward was allowed to bounce, landing at the feet of Alex Akrofi who caught Ted Collins by surprise and unleashed a powerful effort that landed in the back of the net to extend the lead to three goals. Maldon weren’t without chances of their own though, but their profligacy in front of goal continued as both Shomari Barnwell and Bryan Ifeanyi missed golden opportunities to ensure the Jammers had it all to do in the second half.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs AVELEY
Whatever was said at the break had an impact, though, and Brown’s men pulled a goal back within minutes of the restart with Scott Kemp scrambling the ball home after Ifeanyi’s effort hadn’t been properly cleared. Charlee Hughes was denied shortly afterwards by the feet of David Hughes in the home goal, before Barnwell saw his headed effort blocked. Maldon were to be hit on the break again with another cruel blow shortly afterwards, with a counter-attack from the hosts leading to Akfrofi bending an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner to restore the three-goal advantage for Aveley. There would be another flurry of goals in the final ten minutes, firstly Barnwell reducing the arrears to 2-4 when he buried a cross-cum-shot from Ifeanyi in the 82nd minute. Shortly afterwards, Aveley had their fifth goal when two ex-Jammes linked up - Makhosini Khanye setting up George Sykes to make the score 5-2 from close-range with minutes left on the clock. The scoring was rounded off in the dying embers of the game, with Kemp grabbing his second goal of the night but it was no more than a consolation as Brown’s side had to make do with a 3-5 loss.

CLUB HISTORY
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took
the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth
place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.
After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on
a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.
ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
