We have to start living as if we are drawing water from a well. Hannah Engelkamp, Sublime magazine

In the UK we use an average 150 litres of water per day compared with just 20 litres in the third world.

Happily, with H20 low water efficient bathrooms we can still enjoy luxury, style and convenience whilst also conserving water, saving energy and reducing our carbon footprint. In the UK we use about 55% more water than we did 25 years ago*, and this is forecast to rise. It is all pure drinking water, yet 63% of it drains away in the bathroom. If, with every shower, bath or WC flush we save a little water, this mounts up to very large volumes conserved. In combination with small but significant changes in our habits, every one of us can help avoid the water shortages that harm wildlife and threaten essential supplies, and can reduce the carbon emissions produced by water purification and delivery. Modern bathrooms are increasingly water efficient, but Ideal Standard has devised the ultimate water saving products: ergonomic, easy to use and ahead of their time. You don’t buy a bathroom every day, so why not choose one that will meet the environmental criteria of the future. We’re proud of our water saving technology and hope that you will enjoy choosing the right product to meet your needs, allowing you to benefit from smarter water usage for years to come. * Environment Agency website

Flush with pride Whoosh! Between 7.5 and 11 litres per flush is still the norm for 60% of UK households. Time after time, day after day, year in year out, this water expenditure is excessive and presents a significant environmental issue. Currently 30% of all the water we use is just flushed down the toilet.* Building regulations in the UK now require cisterns to have a maximum capacity of 6 litres, but even this volume represents an average water expenditure per person of 30 litres a day.* The problem is significant but not impossible to resolve. Our innovative solutions offer dramatic water savings that benefit the planet and – if your home is metered – will help save you cash too.

Dual flush cisterns

Designed by architect David Chipperfield, both the White and Silver suites prove that – coupled with the latest tap regulator and a Dual flush WC – luxury bathroom fittings can also be water efficient. White close coupled WC suite Dual flush: 6 litre long / 4 litre short White cube 50cm pedestal basin Silver single lever basin mixer Fitted with a flow regulator at 5 litres per min Silver TT shower valve Fitted with a flow regulator at 9 litres per min Moonshadow base connection high pressure shower kit Serenis 90º corner shower tray and enclosure, right handed

Potential saving per person:

41 litres per day

Because you don’t always need a full flush, most Ideal Standard and Armitage Shanks close coupled WCs are available with dual flush cisterns. A long flush push button delivers 6 litres of water and a short flush button Dual flush split push button. 4 litres. The distinctive split push button is stylish, gentle to depress and immediately responsive. On average, a dual flush ensures 25% water savings if the short flush is used four out of five times a day per person. Simple and effective, this is a flexible flushing system.

Low dual flush cistern For optimal savings you could install the Sandringham low flush close-coupled dual flush WC which has a 4 litre long flush and a 2.6 litre short flush, ensuring maximum water economy. 2.6 litres may seem a particularly low volume, but it is sufficient when delivered by the ergonomic Sandringham WC. * Environment Agency research

TIP 1 Install a WC with a dual flush cistern. The contemporary split push button allows you to choose between long or short flushes. Mostly you’ll use the short flush, saving up to 2 litres of water each time. If you only need to spend a penny, why spend more! 4

Jasper Morrison water efficient suite by Ideal Standard Jasper Morrison’s water efficient collection has all the integrity of a modern classic – aesthetically pleasing and designed with a delayed fill 4.5 litre cistern and tap regulator, to perform to perfection without wasting water. Save a penny LOW single flush cisterns 4.5 litre single flush WCs are available in a number of ranges (see page 19). For consistent water and financial savings, and with a short flush, these represent a significant water saving solution. In a busy household or one with children, where it may be difficult to ensure the correct use of a dual flush, low single flush cisterns offer reliable, decision-free flushing at the touch of a push button.

Delayed fill If a cistern starts filling whilst it is still emptying, as is the case with many WCs, this extra water is squandered. To prevent this common problem many Ideal Standard and Armitage Shanks cisterns incorporate new delayed fill technology that can save up to 1/2 litre per flush, a neat feature that significantly enhances the effectiveness of water saving WCs.

Spoilt for choice The illustration below demonstrates the average daily water consumption, per person, of the WCs in our ranges – from the 6 litre single flush at 30 litres per day (10,950 per year) to the 4/2.6 litre dual flush at 14.5 litres per day (5,293 per year). With options to suit every household, the choice depends on the efficiency of your plumbing, typical usage and your style preferences (see the bathroom case studies throughout and product summary on page 19).

TIP 2 How well do you know your WC? Your quaint old toilet could be using up to 11 litres of water each flush, 100% more than the modern recommendation of 6 litres. Join the 21st century with a quieter, smarter, less water-guzzling cistern. 6

Tap in Taps can be very annoying. If they don’t drip, they trickle or gush. How many times have you turned on a tap only to find yourself, and the floor, drenched in a spray of water – wasteful and wet! Taps can be inexcusably water-guzzling. The average basin tap can use over 8 litres of water a minute and in a household where the tap is left on for tooth brushing and shaving, this can amount to vast quantities.

Ceraplan water efficient tap by Ideal Standard This sleek and and stylish mixers in the Idyll Two range are the perfect complement to soft and rounded basin shapes and feature the latest CLICK water saving technology. Single lever basin mixer CLICK cartridge technology Ceramic Disc technology Fitted with a flow regulator at 5 litres per min

Potential saving:

29 litres per day* *Based on a comparison with an average mixer tap.

CLICK cartridge technology Water economy and ergonomic design meet in taps with CLICK technology. A single lever delivers hot and cold in the normal way, but as you adjust the flow using an up and down motion you meet a gentle resistance point that allows you to choose a more moderate 50% flow. Simple and effective, by selecting the CLICK setting you can enjoy a gentler stream and achieve 50% water saving. Perfect! And if you Resistance is felt midway with CLICK want a stronger flow, just push the technology to deliver 50% water flow. lever up past the resistance point. CLICK technology is a smart solution: it serves your needs and minimises waste. If only everything were as simple!

Ceramic disc cartridges Imagine you’ve a dripping tap. Either you can change the washer – a boring job at the best of times – or you can’t, which means a plumber call-out or else just living with the resulting limescale and irritation. Each drip is pure, fresh water down the plug-hole, and if a tap wastes a litre of water an hour, that’s the equivalent, in bottled water, of 4320 two litre bottles a year. Staggering! And yet the solution is simple: a tap with a ceramic disc cartridge won’t be prone to drip, and will control the water flow with absolute precision. Once again, utility meets economy in this smart water saving device.

Flow regulators Where there’s high pressure, a tap can deliver a wasteful and uncomfortably hard flow. For lathering and rinsing a softer stream is more comfortable and practical. For example, a mixer tap flow regulator delivers a maximum of 6 litres of water up to a pressure of 3 bar. Green and unseen, it ensures maximum water economy every time the tap is used.

TIP 3 Drip! Drip! Drip! Time to fix that tap! It may not look like much but a dripping tap can waste 90 litres of water a week, which is 4690 litres of water wasted every year* – and can drive you mad in the process. Better still, install a tap with ceramic disc technology, far more likely to be drip-free. *Bathroom Manufacturers Association 8

A good soak Most people love to have a good soak – it’s one of life’s great pleasures – but how many times have you run a lovely deep bath, only to get in and cascade water all over the floor. A bath need only be 2/3 full to be completely full once you’re in it!

Low-capacity baths Most baths will hold between 175 and 200 litres of water to the overflow. With Ideal Standard’s unique water saving Sandringham and Alto baths the capacity is 149 litres, achieving a significant water saving of 15–28%. This is particularly helpful in busy families, where lots of baths can mean vast water usage.

Link water efficient shower valve by Trevi Trevi Link is a stylish exposed shower valve combining great design with the latest safety features. It also provides a handy Eco button to control the strength of water flow. Trevi Link shower valve (high pressure) Eco volume control for water conservation Fitted with a flow regulator at 9 litres per min Moonshadow standard connection high pressure shower kit

Potential saving per person:

Showering On average showering uses 30% less water than bathing, although some showers may be more wasteful, delivering anything from 10 to more than 30 litres per minute. Since it’s possible to have a perfectly invigorating shower with a maximum of 9 litres of water, you might consider installing a shower regulator that fits between the shower valve and the shower hose set. With this regulator a typical 7-minute shower can save between 40 and 80 litres of water compared to having a bath. (Note that you need a minimum pressure of 0.3 bar to achieve 9 litres per minute.) Alternatively, a handy Eco-button on your shower can be used to reduce or increase the water flow according to need.

15 litres per day

Shower baths Shower baths allow you to install a shower as well as a bath where space is limited. They are significantly wider at one end – 90cm instead of the standard bath width of 70cm – allowing a comfortable standing shower with lots of elbow room. With a dedicated hinged glass shower screen, they offer all the luxury of a stand-alone shower but more flexible bathing options: you can have a daily water saving shower and save the bath for a weekly treat.

TIP 4 Invigorating, sensual, quick and effective, showering is a thoroughly modern activity. If an average person spends 7 minutes in the shower, using an average of 9 litres of water a minute, that’s 63 litres per shower. Showering for just 1 minute less can reduce the tally to 54 litres, a simple way to save over 3285* litres a year. Easy! *Bathroom Manufacturers Association 10

TIP 5 Fitting a water meter can be free of charge and can save you money! The installation of a meter encourages you to use water more wisely and could reduce water usage by 5–15%*. The less water you use, the less you pay, so permanent water saving solutions make sound financial sense. *Environment Agency / www.savewatersavemoney.co.uk 12

Bath, basin and WC combine to deliver remarkable water economy Sandringham water saving suite by Armitage Shanks

Sandringham LOW flush technology is pushing the boundaries with the potential to save huge amounts of water. This level of innovation does need suitable drainage so installation is recommended in new build or extensions where your plumber can investigate suitability. TIP 6 Singing in the bath is fine, but why use over 200 litres of water when you can have a perfectly luxurious soak in three-quarters of that amount. Run a shallower bath or else fit a water saving bath with a lower overflow, which can help regulate family water use – think of those teenagers! – and prevent accidental overflowing. If you love a good wallow, go for an acrylic bath that will keep the water warm for longer so you don’t have to keep topping it up. 14

TIP 7 Plug in! It's no bother to put the plug in when washing your hands or shaving. A running tap can deliver up to 8 litres of water a minute when an average basin holds only 4 litres. That’s a 50% saving in no time at all. Sorted! TIP 8 If you leave the tap running while brushing your teeth, you can waste up to 8 litres of water a minute. The British Dental Health Foundation recommend brushing for 5 minutes a day, that’s 40 litres a day and a staggering 280 litres per week. Alternatively, use a glass of water to rinse your mouth. If we all did this we could save 960 billion litres a year across the nation. 16
