Who is the Durango Botanical Society?

In 2010, a group of volunteers came together in hopes of bringing a concerted effort of horticultural awareness to our corner of paradise. The group is committed to the design and development of public gardens throughout Southwest Colorado for the purposes of education and demonstration.

Bookcase Stones are now being placed on the garden shelf to help fund the maintenance and development of public gardens.

The Durango Botanical Society’s Library Demonstration Garden (located between the Durango City Library and the Animas River Trail) has been a huge success. In 2013 this garden was selected to be a test facility for the Plant Select© program in which plants from around the world are tested to gauge their suitability for the diverse microclimates in SW Colorado. Soon after this honor, DBS was awarded the “Showcase Garden Award” from CSU’s Plant Select© program and Denver Botanic Gardens. This garden now showcases plants that thrive in our harsh environment and offers a quiet place to relax near the Animas River. Garden Docents give public tours every Friday at 9:30 am from late May through September. Just meet in the library lobby, no reservations necessary. Private tours are also available. Donors have the opportunity to become lifetime members or purchase engraved stones in either the “Bookcase” or the flagstone stepping stones along the garden path. All proceeds go towards the development and maintenance of the gardens. Become a member today and enjoy our benefits.

Remember someone you love or admire.

Engraved Flagstones

This garden belongs to the community. As you pass by be inspired by our volunteer efforts. Look up, take a moment to see how you can leave a memory of your own to support this effort.

The Durango Botanical Society’s Library Demonstration Garden was just the beginning. DBS has launched a new project at the library the Durango Botanic Gardens. These gardens include a Literary Garden, a Zen Garden, a Children’s Garden and a newly renovated amphitheater. DBS is an all volunteer organization. Your support makes projects like this possible. “The Bookcase” and “The Garden Path along the Trail” are two ways to support their work or become a “Lifetime Member.”

“Love is not patronizing

Become a Big Brother

and charity isn’t about pity, it is about love.

It only takes a few hours a couple times a month. Just by riding bikes, drawing, playing catch, or catching a movie, you can impact a child’s life. After all, you were going to do all that anyway.

Charity and love are the same – with charity you give love, so don’t just give money but reach out your hand instead.”
