Considering Adopting a New Dog or Cat? Bringing home a new pet is an exciting time. For yourself and your family, but also for your new four-legged companion. Before you make that lifetime commitment though, have you asked yourself these questions? Do I have time for a new pet? Dogs and cats need exercise, food, water, care, and quality time. What is your schedule currently? How much time will you be able to spend with your furry companion? They need your attention several hours a day, every day, for the rest of their lives. Can you commit 10, 15 or 20 years to this lifestyle? Can I afford a new pet? Owning a pet isn’t as cheap as one would think. Veterinary care, grooming, toys, food and other expenses can add up quick. Will you be able to cover any medical issues that your pet may develop? How much are you willing to spend on your new fourlegged companion? Will my new pet be comfortable in my current living arrangements? Do you live in an apartment? A home? Research is helpful when finding a suitable pet that will fit with your lifestyle. Also, talking with a Humane Society representative will help with your search. The urge to adopt the first dog or cat that makes you go “aw” is hard to resist, but that animal might not be right for you or your home. Find the pet that fits you. Dog or cat? It’s more than choosing an animal
Be proactive about your pet’s health Riverview Animal Hospital gives you five important reasons to protect your furry friend

hen you have made the commitment to adopt a pet, it is important to establish a veterinarian that both you and your pet can agree on. Routine check-ups are necessary to ensure a long, happy life for your pet. There are many vet clinics in La Plata County that will offer your new friend tender, loving care. Karyn Ekola from Riverview Animal Hospital, has listed five important things you can do to keep your pet healthy, longer. Keep lean and active The majority of the nation’s dogs and cats are overweight or obese, and many pet owners aren’t aware of the problem. Obesity can be the cause of many other health issues, like heart and respiratory disease, joint disease and osteoarthritis, diabetes, and many forms of cancer. Pets that are overweight can also have a decreased life expectancy of up to 2.5 years. Feed them a high quality, well-balanced diet and make sure your pet gets appropriate amounts of exercise. Love your pets, but don’t love them by overfeeding. Keep their mouth clean Dental disease and oral health issues are one of the most common things we see. It can cause pain and discomfort to your pet, and can lead to other medical problems, like heart disease and kidney disease. Regular dental health checks and cleanings by a veterinarian as well as brushing your pet’s teeth at home are the best ways to ensure your pet’s mouth stays healthy. If your pet won’t tolerate a toothbrush, ask your veterinarian for advice on alternative products that may help. Dodge cancer Have any of your pets problems checked out sooner than later, especially lumps. Many lumps are benign, but some can be malignant and should be removed as soon as they are discovered, to prevent metastasis to other
organ systems. The only way to know for sure is to have a sample of every lump checked under the microscope by your veterinarian as soon as it’s discovered. Find diseases early All pets require regular veterinary care, and veterinary visits go way beyond just vaccinations. In nature, animals hide pain and disease. It’s instinctual, and your pets possess that same instinct. A yearly physical exam and diagnostic lab work can uncover medical problems that you may be unaware of. In addition, early diagnosis of medical problems improves the chances of successful treatment, which will often cost much less than treating a medical problem after it has advanced to a more severe stage. Manage arthritis Keeping your pet lean and active is the first step to preventing arthritis. It’s also a great idea to supplement with glucosamine and fish oils, which help keep cartilage healthy and lubricated. If your pet develops arthritis, it’s important to manage chronic pain with analgesics for the remainder of your pet’s life. Karyn Ekola is the Hospital Manager of Riverview Animal Hospital, located at 670 S. Camino Del Rio. She can be reached at (970) 247-8545.
