Uh, yes please. When Tony Lemos took the job as lead bartender and innovator at Pop Sushi, he told owner Jimmy Nguyen that he wanted to put CBD-infused mocktails on the menu. Is that even legal? More importantly, is it safe? It’s true that there’s still a lot we don’t know about cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid derived from the Cannabis Sativa plant, but everything we do seems on the up and up. If you’re reading this magazine, I’m pretty sure you know this already, but THC is the cannabinoid responsible for that funny feeling you get after taking a monster rip from the gravity bong. CBD, on the other hand, is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, and it contains virtually no traces of its buddy THC when derived from industrial hemp – less than 0.3 percent, to be exact. With CBD, you won’t get that heady feeling (and it probably won’t give you the munchies, either). People use CBD for all kinds of things, like promoting sound sleep and lessening anxiety. Other uses include reducing inflammation or alleviating aches and pains, and from a medicinal perspective, this stuff is like gold. CBD has proven an effective anti-seizure medication for some children, and it shows promise in treating everything from cancer to neurodegenerative disease. There’s still an incredible need for more research, but it seems like you can’t go wrong by adding a few drops of CBD to your daily life. Lemos was introduced to the product when he worked at Nectar of the Goddess, a hemp farm in Hesperus. They produce their own full-spectrum CBD oil, and they also developed a few cocktail bitters with the product. The bartender in Lemos was intrigued. He already loved incorporating seasonal, local products into his cocktails, so why not play around with CBD? Then he read that it might be able to protect the liver and mitigate alcohol damage, and it kind of hit home. He basically grew up in the hospitality industry, and as a bartender, he’s spent a lot of time around alcohol. Liver damage is absolutely a reality in this line of work, so wouldn’t it feel great to serve
his customers something that might be able to heal them? Why not go one step further and infuse it into healthy products, like Durango-brewed Solavita Kombucha, or hand-pressed apple cider from Fenceline out in Mancos? These mocktails would offer people a mindfully crafted, great-tasting, non-alcoholic option that still lets them wind down and relax after a long day. All without a hangover. I have to say, I didn’t miss the alcohol in these drinks. I loved the way the oil coated the top of the drink, too. The pure CBD oil had a slightly earthy, grassy characteristic, which blended seamlessly with the homemade kaffir lime cordial in the Coco (my favorite mocktail on the list). The flavored CBD bitters were great, too: the spicy mole bitters added the perfect amount of spice to mulled apple cider, and black chai bitters created depth with the cucumber and mint flavors in the Thai Goddess. I did get a slight buzz, but not in an intoxicated way. I felt relaxed and talkative, and I had no problem chatting up the complete stranger sitting next to me at the bar (we’re besties now, btw). It was calm and mellow, and I had the best night’s sleep I’ve had in a while. Although it’s fun to be unique, Lemos hopes more bars will take up the mocktail train, which prompts me to circle back to that first question: are CBD cocktails legal? With the recent federal legalization of hemp, hemp-derived CBD appears to be off the no-fly list, but we all know that new laws come with hiccups. It’ll be a while before we come out of this with a clear understanding of the rules. CBD is generally well-tolerated, but you should absolutely consume it responsibly. It’s smart to start with a one- or two-drink limit on CBD-infused products. If you’re interested in experimenting at home, be aware that there are varying degrees of quality when it comes to CBD. Do a little research. I was pretty pleased with the Nectar of the Goddess I tried at Pop Sushi, and I’ll definitely be purchasing one as an early birthday present to myself. —— Lindsay Mattison

Oh Hi: Say ‘hello’ to Colorado’s first THC-infused sparking seltzer

Here’s to hoping Starlight’s CBD drinks start a Durango trend Customers can get anything from a beer to An Apple A Day martini with a side of CBD. Matt McDermott, bartender at Starlight, has even had a customer request a dose of CBD added to their spinach and artichoke dip.
We here at DGO Mag appreciate a good bottle of booze just as much as the next person (probably too much, which you’d know if you spotted us at Snowdown), but let’s face it: alcohol isn’t very good for you. It dehydrates you, it’s chock-full of sugar and carbs, and we don’t think we need to remind anyone that hangovers also exist.
CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, won’t make you high, but it is loaded with health benefits, from easing joint pain to alleviating anxiety.
Well friends ... Starlight Lounge is trying to help stave off some of those issues by offering CBD drinks.

In a meeting of the minds between Durango Organics owners Jonny Radding and Aaron Miles, and Matt Vincent, one of the owners of Ska Brewing Co., these entrepreneurs released Oh Hi, Colorado’s first THC-infused sparkling seltzer, just in time for our April 6 Durango Cannabis Crawl. The canned edibles, er, drinkables, are available in four flavors: ginger basil limeade, pomegranate, grapefruit, and lemon lime. While pomegranate, grapefruit, and lemon lime are dosed with 10 mg of THC each, ginger basil limeade contains 5 mg of THC and 5 mg of CBD. The drinks are made with water-soluble THC, so customers won’t get a side flavor of weed when they throw these drinks back. But yeah, sipping on these cans WILL get you high.

“If you spray it directly on your tongue, it does have a little bit of a weed taste to it,” McDermott said. “As far as the flavor, it doesn’t really affect it too much. Alcohol is a very strong flavor in itself. With the blend that we have, we asked them to do what they could to make sure it wasn’t an overpowering taste.”
“Alcohol is not that great for your body, but CBD really is. It can reduce stress, anxiety, and sleep issues,” McDermott said. “I started trying some out, personally, before we put the menu out. I noticed a big

Let’s face it: given southwest Colorado’s penchant for La Croix, it was inevitable that cannabis companies were gonna get in on the sparkling water game. Well, that day has come, and unsurprisingly, it was a couple of Durangatangs who developed sparkling water that’ll actually get you stoned.

»» Chicken flautas at Tortillas Dona Maria.
And, before you start griping that you can’t FIND fresh tortillas around here, I’m going to stop you. You can find fresh tortillas – maybe not at City Market, but if you stop your happy ass at Tortillas Doña Maria next time you’re on a mall run in Farmington, you can. As I found out recently, Doña Maria is the place to procure fresh tortillas, and they even have freakin’ corn. Oh. And they’re super affordable. We’re talking $3.70 (plus tax, of course) for a dozen corn tortillas, and $4.45 for flour. My half-Mexican heart is so happy. A friend and I picked up two dozen early last week on a whim while on a Farmington run for another story and it was a killer choice. The moment we walked through the glass doors, which are covered in cling wraps boasting photos of their delicious food, that this was the right choice to make. Everything about the little Farmington restaurant, from the menu (which is in Spanish and English) to the minimal decor, was authentic. We ordered a couple dozen tortillas and some lunch, and then grabbed a red booth and took in the vibe. That’s the beauty of this place – Doña Maria has a full menu AND a tortilleria – and as we waited, we watched. There were people dotting every booth – men sitting alone and tucking into tacos and groups of construction workers stuffed alongside a round table waiting for
their food. Our tortillas and lunch – a carne asada torta and chicken flautas – arrived quickly and were piping hot. I had to stop myself from digging into the tortillas right at the table, as I had plenty of carbs in my lunch alone. And, like Doña Maria’s tortillas, they proved to be authentic, delicious carbs, crafted from the Mexican food gods in the back. By the time we found the bottom of our plates, we couldn’t have possibly fit a single tortilla in our bellies. It wasn’t long before I dug those bad boys out at home, though. Flour tortillas hot off the skillet, especially covered in butter and salt, are the perfect comfort food, and I ate entirely too many to count. The corn tortillas went in a pan of homemade enchiladas, and will now be my staple tortilla when making Mexican food. They were the perfect size, shape, and consistency. If you’re going to eat tortillas (or Mexican food in Farmington), you need to eat Doña Maria’s tortillas. There’s no excuse to deprive yourself of the real deal, and there’s NO excuse to eat Mission Tortillas when you have such a fine option just across the New Mexico border. And, while you’re there, pick some up for us, too. We’ve already exhausted our supply. Tortillas Doña Maria is located at 1930 San Juan Blvd, Farmington, NM. ’90s nostalgia bands are back with new albums, and they’re awesome Nostalgia is a funny thing. Just the notion resonates differently with different people, dependent on whom you ask. Some look upon that sort of remembrance of the 1990s fondly, with the soft golden yellow glow and haze of idealized, if not fuzzy, memory. Others may prefer that the past stay the past while insisting that rehashing what is bygone is a detriment to healthy living in the present. Or, like many of us, some straddle the overlapping gray areas between. I have strong feelings on the era, the culture, and the music from that time. I feel fortunate to have gone to high school before the ubiquity of smart devices, the normalization of a nonstop infotainment cycle, Internet and screen time domination and, I cannot stress this enough, social effing media. High school was hard enough. I shudder to think how much harder it would have been with the pressures and expectations swirling around the various social media platforms and the ruthlessness and hormonal awkwardness and idiocy of being an average high school kid. No. Thanks. But, I digress. The music that was made in the ’90s was in fact the music that sound-tracked my life. A smattering of those artists are still putting out records, which is arguably some of their best music. All of the following artists made records in the ’90s and shaped and informed my musical sensibilities and tastes. Here are the current projects: The Meat Puppets, “Dusty Notes” On March 8, the rockers from Phoenix, Arizona returned with a new record and their original 1995 lineup-plus. Brothers Cris and Curt Kirkwood are possibly best known to the masses for a couple of alternative rock radio hits in the early to mid ’90s and the time they appeared onstage alongside Nirvana to play three of their tunes at Cobain’s legendary Unplugged performance. Stephen Malkmus, “Groove Denied” The Pavement frontman released a long awaited album of electronic-inspired jams on March 15 via longtime label Matador. As Pavement fans
know, Malkmus has a unique and identifiable style of playing guitar that has become all his own, but nary a lick will be heard on this record. That may sound blasphemous to some, but believe me when I tell you it works.

Royal Trux,“White Stuff” Also released on March 8, The Washington, D.C.-based duo Neil Hagerty (vocals, guitar) and Jennifer Herrema (vocals) dropped their first proper studio album of fuzzy, brash garage punk since 1997. A number of their albums were remastered and reissued, but “White Stuff” marks a long awaited return with nary a beat missed. Guided By Voices,“Warp and Woof” This won’t be the first GBV record of 2019, and I’d bet dollars to donuts that it won’t be Pollard and Company’s last. One of the most prolific bands of ANY era, GBV will release the album on their very own GBV Inc label in late April. One of the pillars of ’90s indie rock, GBV are as relevant today as they were in the ’90s when their genre-defining albums became a mainstay of college radio. Sebadoh,“Act Surprised”

This album dropped May 25 thanks to Dangerbird Records. Here’s a quote direct from the press release, which explains it better than I could: “Its recording process took place with producer Justin Pizzoferatto in western Massachusetts, where Sebadoh began in the late ’80s. In between presumable nostalgia benders to visit all the band’s favorite formative New England haunts, Lou Barlow, Jason Loewenstein, and Bob D’Amico found time to put together a voluminous 15song tracklist.”

Ascend’s CBD Diamonds turned me into a space cadet who just wanted ice cream There’s nothing quite like a solid dose of CBD to put some pep in your step, but as I sit here going over my notes to write this review, I still feel like I was knocked straight onto my ass due to the CBD Diamonds I vaped last night. Let me explain. This week, we tried Ascend’s CBD Diamonds, a high CBD extract, courtesy of our friends at Prohibition Herb. Ascend is apparently pretty tightlipped about, and very proud of, their secret methodology for what goes into making their CBD Diamonds, so unfortunately, we don’t have much to share as far as what all goes into this magical concoction. Here’s what we do know. We went with a blend that includes Durban Poison, a sativa that originated from South Africa. It’s a strain that will give you a boost of energy and smells (and tastes) incredibly sweet. This specific blend contains a 4:1 ratio of CBD:THC – a higher ratio than some of the other Ascend blends, which are about 100:1. It’s crystallized without the use of solvents, and cannabis terpenes are encased within each of the pretty diamonds. CBD Diamonds concentrate looks like angel dust, but not the drug that makes you hallucinate and fight everyone. We’re talking sparkly matter from the wings of celestial beings. Or maybe fairy dust? Regardless, the crystals in this concentrate look out of this world beautiful. To enjoy the full spectrum of the extract, you should dab or vape at a low temperature. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I smoked this, as extracts with larger amounts of CBD tend to be a hit or miss for me. I was, fortunately, not disappointed. Unfortunately, since I was worried I wouldn’t experience the full effects of the extract, I smoked waaaaaay too
Lemon Train temporarily curbed the effects of my cold. Magic! much of it (this is not unusual for me, btw). But, hear me out. This concentrate tastes amazing. As soon as I took my first inhale, I was immediately struck by how sweet the smoke that filled my lungs tasted. It was a floral and citrus flavor, and I was immediately enamored. As much as I love a good smoke, there are few times where I think to myself, “Wow, this actually tastes delicious.” And I can tell you, this was the case with this extract. This concentrate also gave me a pleasant head high. My brain felt as though it were wrapped in a warm blanket, free from all cares. Apparently, though, that included not listening to people when they spoke to me and confusing a conversation I had with someone about a “spring trap,” which I heard as “space truck.” I still have no idea what that conversation was about. Among my notes are complaints about how I had “I Got Five on It” by Luniz stuck in my head. “Really loud music in my head,” I wrote on my phone. “Can’t stop dancing.” I was also apparently very upset about the fact that I did not have ice cream when sober me knows that, in fact, I do have ice cream in my freezer. “I want ice cream why don’t I have ice cream,” my notes say. All of my senses felt incredibly heightened. I could hear the music in my head so clearly and there was a low buzzing in my ears. I could feel, taste, and hear everything so much more clearly. I was Spiderman, finally. Except I was also very upset that I had to do my laundry. Basically, I was on Mars when I smoked this concentrate and I am not complaining. Let the magic of Ascend’s concentrate take you away into space and maybe get some good music stuck in your head along the way. —— Sir Blaze Ridcully
Please allow me to come clean about something, friends. Despite how much weed I smoke for these reviews, there are times when I can’t tell what the hell a strain is. Is it an indica-leaning hybrid? A 50/50? Why can I not feel my nose? Why do people think this smells like feet? You know ... those types of things. That is not the case with Lemon Train, though, the strain we’re reviewing for Pagosa Therapeutics this week. I knew without a doubt, and without cheating, that this strain is ALL sativa. I’m actually kind of proud of myself for this one, because I didn’t even check the little jar for hints prior to smoking it and I still called it correctly. I usually try to do a little research but I have a heinous cold so I went in blind, hoping that it would either knock me out or make me so delusional that I wouldn’t remember to cough incessantly for hours. Neither of those things happened, but to be honest, I didn’t mind, cause this is a very good sativa. Anyway, please allow me to backtrack. I smoked this strain on Saturday afternoon in what felt like a break between hacking and sniffling, and I was pretty surprised that I could taste the lemon and grass flavors in the strain, as I haven’t been able to taste jack shit for a week. So, either it’s a very pronounced citrus and lemongrass taste or the gods gave me a temporary break in the snotty mess. I’m going with the former. I used the dry herb vape (which I’d found after I lost it in one of my jacket pockets for weeks), so that may have had something to do with the pronounced taste, but I have a feeling this strain would taste like a citrus orchard either way. It also looks like a citrus orchard, with pretty light green buds layered with orange hairs. I did choke a little bit, but I honestly can’t tell you whether it’s because the smoke was harsh or my body is wrekt with a t from this cold. Take that as you will. Anyway, I limited myself to a bowl,

afraid that I would cave in on myself from an overdose of Dayquil and Lemon Train, and it was probably a smart move. This particular batch can range from 20.6 to 30.5 percent THC, which is, in scientific terms, a metric shit ton, and considering my heart was already doing some weird Wile E. Coyote biz, one bowl sounded like plenty. And, one bowl was indeed plenty. I was stoned, clear-headed, and wide awake, the opposite of what I’d been hoping for. That ended up being a good thing, though. As I’ve said 400 times in this review, I’ve been foggy brained since this cold started and I haven’t been able to get anything done, so I was actually pretty stoked (after the fact) that Lemon Train kicked me into a slow productive gear. I was able to get up, get some stuff done, and not feel like death for a couple of hours. I did at one point have a pretty good head high – my notes say “Head high real fast but it could be the cold meds.” – but it wasn’t so pronounced or overwhelming that it got in the way of my temporary productivity. My notes also call myself a mouth-breather, which is true, but again, not because of Lemon Train. Because of whatever jerk coughed this virus on me. I want to try this strain again once I can think straight to see just HOW productive it can make me. If it managed to pull me off my death bed, even temporarily, I have a feeling it’s baller af when you’re not a shoe-in for a Mucinex commercial. But even if it only kicks me into medium gear like it did on Saturday, I’ll take it. Lemon Train, sick or not, was a good sativa indeed. —— DGO Pufnstuf

Friends, I cannot tell a lie: I am lazy af on the weekend. My Fridays start with fantasies of productivity and personal projects I’ve long put off. But, by the time the sun comes up Saturday morning, I’ve long decided my weekend will solely consist of sprawling out on my couch, remote in hand. Impressive, I know. This weekend was a different story, though. I spent my Saturday on a cleaning spree. Not a speck of dust remains on my furniture, my bathroom has never been so clean, and there are no longer piles of laundry littering my floor. I am a changed person. Well, for all of last weekend, anyway. I’m attributing this unusually productive behavior to Aloha Limon, the strain we picked up from Chronic Therapy in Cortez this week. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty of this latest strain, shall we? Aloha Limon, or Aloha Limone as Leafly refers to it, is a hybrid cross between Hawaiian Sunrise and Nina Limone, with 22.38 percent THC. If you’re lucky enough to snag this strain off the shelf, be sure to give it a hearty sniff, cuz it smells del-ish-us. Aloha Limon is a grand orchestral wake up call to the senses with musical floral tones – it’s a rich blend of earthy and citrusy smells. When I first sat down to smoke this out of my dry herb vape, I was expecting my usual couch-lock reaction. I was mentally prepared for an afternoon of being a useless stoner and watching a series of outdated true crime shows. Basically, my dream weekend. Alas, it was not to be.

As a literal cloud of smoke enveloped my head (and brain), I began to feel this energy – a sense of euphoria, if you will. My skin felt tingly, and my noggin was pleasantly buzzing with a head high – alert and (shockingly) able to follow what was going on in the room, although there wasn’t much happening. I side-eyed my couch companion, whose eyes were glazed over and locked onto the television screen from whatever she’d been smoking. She wouldn’t miss me if I wandered away to neutralize every bit of dust and dirt in my room, would she?
Details Where to find Aloha Limon: Chronic Therapy, 1020 S. Broadway, Cortez, chronictherapy.co. Price: $13 a gram Apparently not, as the next time I passed her on the couch, her face was smashed into a pillow, dead asleep. Is there a thick layer of dust covering every surface of your home? Have you been putting off reorganizing your room? Or, how about unpacking those boxes you’ve shoved to the back of your closet? Have you been shoving clothes under your bed? How long have those water glasses been sitting on your nightstand? I’m going to go ahead and assume that’s a “yes, that’s my home” on all counts. If you’re struggling in that motivation department, I invite you – no, IMPLORE you – to get your hands on Aloha Limon. Smoke some of this earthy nectar and vacuuming your floors won’t feel like a hard-knock life. No, sir. Boring old chores turn into the dance of decluttering your soul, aka your home. You probably won’t even recognize yourself in that bathroom mirror you’re scrubbing. So, now that it’s spring cleaning season, it’s best to get over the moaning and groaning of all the to-do lists you have stuck to the fridge and get on over to Chronic Therapy for a spark of motivation. —— Sir Blaze Ridcully

Sweet C02 When Sweet C02 owner Forrest Jones first got into cannabis, he wasn’t in the business of extracting oil from bud. He was in the business on the gardening side as owner of DHL Garden Supply in Bodo Park, a garden supply store that sold cannabis growing equipment to the folks interested in cultivating their own crops. Jones’ penchant for plants progressed from gardening supply to sticky green guru, which came about after he heard from several of his gardening customers that they were extracting cannabis concentrates with dangerous solvents like propane or butane. He became concerned that his customers were using such intense chemicals because in some cases, people were causing explosions when using butane. “That was right at the time when there was all those home explosions,” Courtney Taglialatela, Sweet C02’s sales and marketing director. “People were dying from processing butane. Now it doesn’t really happen as much because of regulation and because if you’re making it commercially you have all the systems in place to make sure that people don’t blow themselves up.” It prompted Jones to explore other ways to extract
Striving to bring customers pure concentrates and vegan-friendly salves
cannabis concentrate – he opted for C02 extraction because it’s cleaner and safer – and, after two years of licensing hoops, Sweet C02 was born. The company doesn’t have its own grow, and buys flower for the oil from local operations like Durango Organics and Durango Cannabis Company instead. “We’ve been here for about four years supplying all the local people,” Taglialatela said. “We’ve expanded over to Trinidad, Pueblo, and a little bit in Denver. We’ve got one store in Vail. We’re just hacking away at it.” The Durango business now supplies most of the dispensaries in the region with pure, potent, and flavorful C02-extracted cannabis oil, and they recently expanded into salves. Their salves are made of a blend of sunflower oil, meadowfoam, arnica, and other essential oils, and are helpful with everything from joint pain to headaches. “The salve is awesome. It’s good for everything,” Taglialatela said. “It’s very hydrating. It’s very relaxing. I like to put it on my feet before bed and put socks on. I feel like it helps me sleep throughout the night. It relaxes you a little bit more.” The process of making Sweet C02’s salves is quite similar to brewing beer, according to Drew Gremillion, the Sweet C02 employee who first came up with the recipe for the salve. You have to let the herbs and oils brew together for a month or so before they’re ready to be blended with THC and nut butter to become salve. “Theoretically, if you ask a cosmetic scientist they’d classify it more as a body butter just based on the base of it,” Gremillion said. “But the way that I make it is still kind of the old fashioned way
of salves with the infused oils and bringing all the different groups together.” Sweet C02 avoids using beeswax, Gremillion said, because it’s not as effective as using something like meadowfoam, since beeswax doesn’t penetrate as easily. It can also leave a waxy film on your skin, something that Sweet C02’s salve doesn’t do. “We don’t use beeswax just to be a little more vegan-friendly. Beeswax slows the absorption down and it changes the consistency of it. I see beeswax as a sort of shortcut,” Gremillion said. “It’s really easy to make salve if you’re at home but if you want something that absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy, waxy feeling, I’ve found that it’s better to leave it out and people are happier with the end result.” Sweet C02 products can be found in dispensaries across Durango and Colorado, and it’s not hard to see why their business has grown so rapidly over the last several years. “I think the goal is provide pure concentrate,” Taglialatela told DGO Mag in 2018. “In our process, we’re not losing any of the terpenes, and we’re not collecting any of the terpenes. It’s not separated and put back together. It’s a whole embodied oil of the cannabis plant.” Sweet CO2 is a sponsor of DGO Mag’s Cannabis Crawl and will be offering a special deal at some dispensaries during the Second Annual Cannabis Crawl on April 6: Buy one Sweet CO2 product and get a second one for 50 percent off. How local growers are turning the cannabis industry even greener »» Cannabis companies are getting earth friendly when growing weed
By Amanda Push DGO STAFF WRITER
D
urango Cannabis Company’s water bill comes out to an average of $38 a month – approximately the amount of what it costs to live in a two-bedroom apartment. This number is especially impressive when compared to an average monthly aqua statement of a grow operation, which can exceed more than $1,000 a month, according to Green Rush Daily. Cultivating marijuana can be a massive drain on resources, but the Durango wholesale grower’s dedication to keeping an earth friendly operation at their 8,000-squarefoot facility is hopefully an indication of where the industry is headed. “This is definitely one of the most high-tech grows that you will come across in Colorado,” said Ben Peters, director of marketing and sales for Durango Cannabis Company. “When it comes to those kinds of efficiencies, we’re definitely one of the first people to employ those kinds of systems and actually have them work and turn out some great product.” If others take up the mantle, the days of busting growers because their immensely high utility bills, which are a dead giveaway to authorities, could soon be gone. Case and point, in 2012, a former state trooper’s Ridgeville, South Carolina home was raided when investigators were steered there by his utility company after they noticed his electrical use was so unusually high that circuits were being tripped often, according to an article by The Post and Courier. Unlike this unlucky bloke, Durango Cannabis Company is a licensed growContinued on Page 21

er with 1,000 living plants at a time in its facility, and they put measures in place to ensure energy efficiency and a utility bill that we should all aspire to have. Durango Cannabis Company uses a large reservoir tank to regulate the building’s heat, what Peters described as the most efficient parts of the facility. “To cool our building, we’re using Surna technology,” Peters said. “What our Surna system does is, obviously plants give off a ton of humidity, so what these dehumidifier units do is capture all that humidity and moisture content. We run it outside to these big chiller units, combine it with glycol solution – glycol is super cold – and essentially what it does is it cools our really hot building. “Plants give off heat. Our lights give off a shit ton of heat. ... So essentially what we do is we use the plant respiration to cool our building. Then we recapture 98 percent of the water we put it into the facility into this reservoir, recycle it, and water our plants again.” When the water comes back through the system, the water’s pH balance and acidic levels must be adjusted by running it through a carbon filter and several other filters before it comes back. A pump keeps the temperature and pressure up so the water is constantly being cycled in and out of the tank to make sure it’s at a perfect temperature. The property the grow-op sits on also has its own commercial well, because when they started the indoor grow, the city and county told them if they were building their operation within those limits, they’d have to have a commercial well. They initially weren’t able to use Durango water, as it’s sourced from a federal reservoir. However, the city of Durango later ended up annexing the property and told the business they’d have to bring in city water. “Then, $50-60K later, we pipe in city water,” Peters said. “They think they’re going to make a shit ton of money off of us and we have an extremely efficient water use.” So efficient, in fact, that the Surna system has cut their water bill by 90 percent.
Durango Cannabis Company also employs a Dosatron system to regulate plant nutrition via a drip line. The precise measuring of the system helps to eliminate waste and save on manpower, as the grow employees don’t have to spend long periods of time watering the plants.
CBD Store DURANGO’S FIRST
Quality Local Products For The Mind And Body
“The Dosatron was originally developed for car washes, interestingly enough,” Peters said. “We’ve adapted it for the cannabis industry for direct dosing of all of our nutrients. Essentially, it allows for a very accurate nutrient uptake. It allows for automated watering and nutrients, like feeding your plants.” Aside from sustainable water practices, Durango Cannabis Company also applies those values to their soil use. The grow works with organic soil they get from the self-described “mad soil scientists” and Denver-based company Batch 64, which has shops located across Southwest Colorado. “We did our first test drive with them about four harvests ago and this is our second big, full shipment,” Peters said. “So, new with (Batch 64) but the plants are loving it. For us, we believe that the plant grows to a more complex cannabinoid profile and terpene profile when it’s grown in soil. The whole goal of this fancy facility is to replicate a perfect environment outside.” After every grow round, staff at Durango Cannabis Company strip down the pots, clean them, and reuse them. The used soil is then collected by local food share groups and farmers to be recycled. “This is still some very nutrient-rich soil. It’s very high quality. It just needs to have a few nutrients added back into it,” Peters said. “Whoever wants it can come get it. ... It’ll be stripped out of the pots and you can just pick it up with a trailer and do what you want with it.” While their facility already goes above and beyond in their sustainability practices, Durango Cannabis Company is still looking for ways to be energy efficient, including installing solar panels. “We’re going to continue to get more and more efficient because obviously the more you can lower your cost of production, the more that comes back to our pockets,” Peters said.

Cannabis clues Ganja origins The cannabis plant can grow up to 16 feet high, which is like, three times the size of a human, and likely originated near the Altai or Tian Shian Mountains. Hardly the hippies We know Cheech and Chong would lead you to believe otherwise, but those darn hippies smokin’ doobies on the corner were NOT the first to grow and smoke marijuana. Scientists believe the cannabis plant was first cultivated in China and India, according to “Cannabis and Cannabinoids: Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutic Potential.” Smokin’ sexes Weed can be super different for men and women, according to a 2014 study in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. In research on rats, Washington State University psychologist Rebecca Craft found that females were more sensitive to cannabis’ painkilling qualities, but were also more likely to develop a tolerance to those darn doobies, according to an article published in Live Science.
