STAY STOCKED WITH ESSENTIAL ITEMS

Seasonal sniffles. Aches and pains. At times, the machine that is the body needs some TLC. When that time comes, be prepared for seasonal ailments and unexpected illness. A well-stocked first aid kit and medicine cabinet can help families readily respond to illness and injuries.

ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT & BANDAGES

Accidents happen everywhere, especially at home. Burns, cuts and scrapes are common injuries people experience in a household. To address these injuries, pack a first aid kit with adhesive bandages, gauze pads and medical tape as well as antibiotic ointment and antiseptic wipes. After applying ointment or antiseptic, always cover a wound with clean bandages.

ANTI-ITCH CREAM

Got an itch to scratch? Creams that contain hydrocortisone can relieve minor skin irritations, such as insect bites or rashes. To reduce the skin damage caused by irritations and itching, apply medication to affected areas as instructed.

ALLERGY MEDICATION

Though the cause for an allergic reaction can vary, antihistamines can help individuals treat symptoms of such reactions, like itching, rashes and swelling. Medications come in creams, liquids and pills. Look for non-drowsy options, and always read

THERMOMETER

Though mom’s method of touching lips to the forehead never failed for us as children, a thermometer is the first line of defense against illness and infection. While an individual’s body temperature may slightly fluctuate, an above average body temperature often indicates activity in the immune system.

PAIN RELIEVER & FEVER REDUCER

Over-the-counter medicines often help people manage symptoms of common aches and pains. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and fever reducer. Use caution when consuming medications, and pay close attention to instructions.

COLD, COUGH & THROATSOOTHING MEDICINE

The common cold can cause congestion and discomfort or sore throats and runny noses. Find relief with over-the-counter medication. But remember, cough and cold remedies can cause serious side effects in children, such as convulsions and increased heart rate. So, they should not be taken by children under 4 years of age, unless prescribed by a pediatrician.

TWEEZERS

Tweezers are more than a grooming tool used to remove unwanted hair. They can also prevent infections by allowing people to remove splinters and ticks from the skin. For accessibility, designate tweezers to the first aid kit, and keep them separate from personal grooming tools.

HEAT & ICE PACKS

For sprained ankles or bad backs, there’s nothing quite like the relief of a cold compress or heating pad. Treat sore muscles and swollen joints with care, or find relief from headaches and injuries.
