Ouray, Colorado
JOHN FOWLER - CRYSTAL LAKE, HIGHWAY 550
Ouray is located near the Four Corners – where Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado converge. Ouray is found along U.S. Highway 550 in southwestern Colorado along the San Juan Skyway Scenic and Historic Byway, one of America’s most beautiful drives. The incredibly scenic Million Dollar Highway connects Ouray to Silverton and Durango to the south, while the drive through Ridgway to the north and west laces past the Mount Sneffels Wilderness Area and into the lovely towns of Telluride, Rico, Dolores and Mancos. Ouray has perfect weather, charm and beauty. With nearly 285 days of sunshine a year and moderate year-round temperatures, this authentic Victorian town epitomizes the genuine Mountain West. Ouray’s intimate downtown – a designated National Historic District – is nestled in a canyon at the base of the San Juan Mountains and offers some of the most panoramic views in the United States, earning it the nickname “Switzerland of America.” Natural wonders like waterfalls, sulfur-free hot springs, mountain peaks and wildlife abounds in the area, as do historic ghost towns, museums, beautifully preserved Victorian-era architecture and year-round cultural events. Ouray also offers some of the most adventurous outdoor activities, winter or summer, including hundreds of miles of historic Jeep trails, the world-famous Ouray Ice Park and close to 100 hiking trails, which has earned it the new moniker of the “Outdoor Recreation Capital of Colorado.” We warmly welcome you and encourage you to use this guide to help map out your Ouray, Colorado vacation. Ouray’s Famous Hot Springs For centuries, visitors have sought the healing and rejuvenating powers of the natural hot springs that flow through the hard rock of the San Juan Mountains. The Ouray area boasts five developed hot springs. Four of these: the Ouray Hot Springs Pool, the vapor caves and outdoor pool at the Wiesbaden Hot Springs Spa & Lodgings, the pools at the Twin Peaks Lodge & Hot Springs and the naturally landscaped pools at Orvis Hot Springs in Ridgway are open to the public; the other springs at the Box Canyon Lodge and Hot Springs are open to guests of the hotel. If you’re missing your fitness routine, a nominal fee gives you access to the 1,800 square foot fitness center on the second floor of the Ouray Hot Springs Pool building. In the summer, the beautiful weather and nearby parks offer family fun, free concerts and plenty of opportunities to play and soak up the sun, especially on the obstacle courses and slides at the Ouray Hot Springs Pool. But winter is probably the most magical time to visit the local hot springs. There is nothing quite like soaking in the healing waters under a star-filled sky, while snowflakes fall on your nose. In operation since 1927, the Ouray Hot Springs Pool and its crystal clear natural hot springs (free of the strong sulfur smell of many other hot springs) has been the premier destination for relaxation, family fun and amazing views! After almost 90 years of operation and countless visitors, the pool facility was starting to show its age and as of October 2016, a complete renovation of the facility is underway. Be sure to join us in late May of 2017 when the new pool opens.
BOX CANYON BLOG (MARK JOHNSON) – OURAY HOT SPRINGS POOL
It was redesigned for the many interests of our community and our visitors and the new features are sure to create lasting memories for future generations to come. Visit the Ouray Hot Springs Pool website (ourayhotsprings.com) to see what’s in store!
Come and soak with us! It’s a centuries-old tradition. The Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop Thermal hot springs flow abundantly throughout the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Soaking in natural mineral water is a time-honored tradition to enhance wellness and relaxation is the ultimate goal. Five premier hot springs destinations in the western part of the state have formed the 720-mile Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop, which showcases some of the most popular hot springs attractions in the country including those in Ouray County, Pagosa Springs, Chaffee County, Steamboat Springs and Glenwood Springs. There is so much variety: from intimate private baths to the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool. Each of the 19 facilities offers unique features like vapor caves, hot pots, terraced pools, enormous travertine formations and fun-filled aquatic centers. www.colorado.com/hotspringsloop OurayColorado.com • 1-800-228-1876 • 2017 • Ouray Official Visitor’s Guide – 11

Hiking: Elevate Yourself Whether you call it hiking, trekking, going on walkabout or rambling, putting your feet into motion and heading into the hills is a wonderful way to experience Ouray. The San Juans are home to not only hundreds of miles of trails, thanks to the Utes, explorers, surveyors and miners, but also the highest concentration of 14,000-foot peaks in Colorado. Many of our trailheads are within easy walking distance of downtown Ouray. All of these trails will provide you with postcard perfect backdrops and awe-inspiring views. You will find the hiking terrain around Ouray to be relatively steep and remote, so make sure you check the weather, take time to acclimate, add a little extra time onto your usual pace, and 12 – Ouray Official Visitor’s Guide • 2017 • 1-800-228-1876 • OurayColorado.com

take plenty of breaks along the way to enjoy the view! Be sure to familiarize yourself with trail etiquette and safety guidelines and definitely pick up the excellent local map provided by the Ouray Trail Group for descriptions, distances, difficulty, and topographic information. Below are some of our local favorites. Don’t feel like walking, but still want the views? Don’t want to carry all of your gear on a long backpacking trip? Want to sleep in a cozy hut rather than a tent? We can make that happen! Let us help you find the perfect guide to take you on a breathtaking horseback ride or a posh trip into the backcountry: our local outfitters have just what you need (local information starts on page 35).
Activites & Adventures
Our Favorite Hikes Easy: Box Cañon Waterfall & Park
(Hiking Time: 15-30 minutes)
Box Cañon Falls is Ouray’s own geologic wonder. It sits at the narrow quartzite canyon at the end of Canyon Creek and spills thousands of gallons a minute over the 285-foot waterfall. The “Box” part of the canyon has been designated a protected habitat by the National Audubon Society for the endangered Black Swift Bird, which migrates to Ouray every summer from its winter home in Brazil. You can access this city park from Highway 550 south of Ouray, or on foot from the bottom of Third Avenue.
OURAY CHAMBER RESORT ASSOCIATION – BOX CAÑON WATERFALL AND PARK
Moderate: The Perimeter Trail (Hiking Time: 2-1/2 to 4 hours)
Ouray’s Perimeter Trail is a unique, 6-mile adventure that starts and ends at the Ouray Visitor’s Center. The trail is a comprehensive checklist of some of Ouray’s most famous features including: Cascade Falls, the Baby Bathtubs, the Potato Patch (yes, the old miners actually grew potatoes here), the Ouray Ice Park, Box Cañon Falls, Ouray’s old water tunnel, a “troll” bridge over Oak Creek canyon and Henn’s Overlook. You can also choose to just hike short sections of the trail via several trailheads around town. The Baby Bathtubs section and Lower Cascade Falls sections are two of our favorite familyfriendly hikes.
Adventurous: Old Horsethief Trail
(Hiking Time: 4-5 hours)
The trailhead begins about 100 yards north of the Ouray Visitor’s Center on the north side of the Skyrocket Creek drainage. From the trailhead, the trail climbs to a crossing of Skyrocket Creek, switchbacks up talus slopes, crosses the “blowout” and Bridal Veil Creek, and then passes near the Wanakah, Johnathan, Schofield and American Nettie mines on “Gold Hill” while climbing to an intersection with the new Horsethief trail a bit below the Bridge of Heaven. It is 2.8 miles from the trailhead to the intersection. There are tremendous views back down into Ouray and down the valley toward Ridgway.

CLASSIC VISIONS PHOTOGRAPHY – OURAY JEEPING
Off-highway adventures bring you to some of the most stunning landscapes in the Rocky Mountains. Ouray has an enormous variety of four-wheeling routes at every level. Go it alone or with guides who love to share their knowledge of the San Juans’ geology, flora, fauna and most colorful stories. Four-wheeling enthusiasts travel here all summer long for the breathtaking scenery and then again during the fall months for the spectacular aspen colors. Jeep tours have traversed the high mountain passes commercially since 1946 and Jeep and four-wheel drive clubs meet in Ouray throughout the season. Ouray has many companies that offer Jeep rentals and guided 4x4 tours (local listings start on page 35), so make sure you take advantage of this great adventure while you’re in town.
Locals’ Pick: Corkscrew Gulch
This popular moderate drive branches east off Hwy 550 in Ironton Park, 8 miles south of Ouray. Corkscrew is especially beautiful in the fall when you can overlook the spectacular stands of aspen in the Ironton valley. Don’t forget to look down, too – Corkscrew Gulch is a local’s favorite for mushroom hunting. The road climbs via numerous switchbacks (the last few are steep and narrow) to the red soil summit at 12,000 feet. This soil is the same one that you can see on the famous Red Mountains to the south. If you continue north to Hurricane Pass, your view of Lake Como is worth the trip, and a side trip to one of the many ghost towns in the area is a must.
Locals’ Pick: Imogene Pass
Imogene Pass is one of the more difficult drives in the San Juan Mountains, but the steep and loose slopes are worth it for the 13,000 foot pass and sweeping views at the top. Follow Camp Bird Road (County Road 361) five miles to the Camp Bird Mine. The road here turns left over Canyon Creek, climbing along cliffs and looking down over Camp Bird Mine. The ascent to Imogene Basin is rough and steep but boasts spectacular wildflower displays in the mid-summer months. The descent into the Tomboy Mine area and Telluride is more gradual. If you’re looking for a full day adventure, consider coming back to the east side of the mountains via Ophir Pass, for a moderate, but equally beautiful drive.
World’s Oldest Jeep Tour Company Ouray’s original & only jeep tour company for 40 years!
The Alpine Loop: Scenic & Historic Backcountry Byway
The Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway is one of the finest examples of our nation’s Backcountry Byway system. Seventy-five miles of road carve through the breathtaking San Juan Mountains, following historic routes worn by Native Americans traversing the region as they returned to traditional summer camps and the mining roads that connected the booming mining towns of Silverton, Lake City, Telluride and Ouray. Along this route, you will encounter the skeletons of old mining towns and mills that once promised great hope and prosperity. This loop requires a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle as it follows rough dirt and gravel roads through BLM and USFS lands. It’s best to begin your Alpine Loop journey out of Ouray southbound on Highway 550. The posted mileage for the “loop” can be deceiving, a trip out and back to Ouray exceeds 100 miles and will easily take an entire day to explore. Even better, break it into a multi-day adventure! The Alpine Loop rises above treeline at most of its passes, both Cinnamon and Engineer top out well above 12,000 feet. Up here, the weather is easily 20 degrees colder than at lower elevations; be sure to bring a jacket and warm clothes. While driving the Alpine Loop, you will see a number of routes that take off from the main road. Many of these historic trails are blocked with rocks, logs, gates, dirt berms, or other barriers. These routes are not open to motorized travel and the barriers are used to protect private property, prevent vehicle damage to fragile meadows or tundra, or prevent vehicle access to Wilderness or Wildnerness Study Areas as required by law. The routes also intersect at many points, so pick up a more detailed map before your actual adventure.

Climbing Adventures in Ouray Climb Rock, Mountains, Canyons and Ice

Be sure to check in with one of our local guide services and let them teach you the ropes safely. Always wear a helmet, and check the bookstore and outdoor shops for the latest edition of local guidebooks.

Canyoning Adventures
Located on the floor of a box canyon and surrounded by high mountains carved by wind and water, Ouray hosts some of the highest quality alpine canyons in the United States. The quality and variety of canyons found in mountains surrounding Ouray – from the family-friendly trip down Portland Creek to the 280-foot rappel down Cascade Falls – is staggering. All of them feature one crucial element – water: plummeting over cliffs, cascading down tight rapids, and swirling around deep, cold turquoise pools. The season for canyoning varies from year to year due to spring runoff and fall snow. The canyons are most accessible in August and September when the weather is warm and the water is low. Canyoning is an incredibly technical activity, so be safe and learn how to explore Ouray’s canyons at the Ouray Canyoning Festival in August or hire a guide to teach you the ropes of this thrilling sport.

You can also rent a pair of snowshoes and explore the trails and roads of the Amphitheater right from town or pack up your backpack and set out on an overnight hut or yurt trip.
Sledding, Sliding & Tobogganing
Sleds are all the rage in Ouray when the snow flies. Whether you have a handcrafted racing sled or a plastic saucer, the hills around Ouray offer countless opportunities for sledding. Vinegar Hill, between 5th and 6th Avenues in town, is blocked to traffic in the winter for safe sliding fun. For a bigger thrill, try a hill on one of our snow-covered backcountry roads. Be sure to spot for traffic and have plenty of s’mores and hot chocolate on hand.

History & Heritage
Ghost Towns One of the best ways to experience the history and Wild West lore of Ouray is by exploring one of the many ghost towns that stand witness to history with their weathered headframes and leaning bunkhouses deep in backcountry of the San Juan Mountains. Some of these ghost towns were small, inhabited by only a few people, while others had thousands of residents. Most ghost towns in this area are now bare sites with only a few buildings still standing due to the long, difficult winter months. These historical ruins are true “ghosts” and you will surely feel the shadows of days past among them, especially in the old bunkhouses. Make sure to take your camera and brush up on your history before you go. There are a number of extremely interesting books that cover the history of many of the old mine sites and mining camps. The following recommended books can be purchased at many of Ouray’s local shops: Mountain Mysteries, The Ouray Odyssey, by Marvin Gregory & P. David Smith; Colorado 4WD Adventures, by Peter Massey and Jeanne Wilson. CAUTION: In your exploration of these abandoned mine sites, be extremely cautious of any unprotected portals and shafts, they can be very dangerous. Please leave the sites the way you found them. The following sites are only a small fraction of those that exist in the San Juan Mountains. A few towns can be reached by passenger car but most are in remote areas only accessible by four-wheel drive or a hike.
Red Mountain Mining District
Miners from three famous mines, the Guston-Robinson, the Yankee Girl and the Genessee-Vanderbilt, lived in this area. By
BRIAN K. FOSTER - ANIMAS FORKS
1890, the population of Guston district reached 340 residents, but quickly emptied when all three mines shut down in 1897. Today, the only remaining buildings are mining structures and the famous headframe of the Yankee Girl Mine. This area was known for its rich ore. The GustonRobinson Mine, first opened to mine lead, held rich deposits of galena and some of its ore averaged 15,000 ounces of silver per ton with three ounces of gold. The Yankee Girl produced very rich ore of up to 3,000 ounces of silver per ton, with the added benefit of up to 30% copper. The Genessee-Vanderbilt Mine produced a lower grade ore than the other two mines but produced enough to continue working into the late 1940s.
Animas Forks
Silver was first discovered in the Animas Forks area in 1875. Because of the many mining camps tucked into the surrounding mountains, Animas Forks served as a junction for many of the miners. Telephone lines were brought into Animas Forks in the 1880’s and a stagecoach ran daily from Lake City to Silverton, via Animas Forks, over the rugged Engineer Pass. At its peak, this mining town had about 1,500 residents. The town was nearly deserted by 1901 but had a resurgence of activity in 1904 when the railroad was extended from Silverton. The Gold Prince Mill, the first large mill in the region to have been framed with structural steel, was constructed in Animas Forks in 1907. It operated only until 1910 when it was dismantled and hauled to Eureka to build a new mill for the Sunnyside Mine. About 12 houses remain today, along with the Columbus Mill and the old jail structure. OurayColorado.com • 1-800-228-1876 • 2017 • Ouray Official Visitor’s Guide – 25

Ouray and Ridgway are the perfect places to stage a series of classic mini-road trips, with the local hot springs and friendly pubs to soothe away your road weariness at the end of the day. Below are a few of our favorite regional drives and destinations. Be sure to refer to the gatefold map for a regional road map.
Epic Drive: The Million Dollar Highway & San Juan Skyway Scenic and Historic Byway
A trip to Ouray County isn’t complete without a ride along the Million Dollar Highway, the section of Highway 550 between Ouray and Silverton, which is on many top scenic drives lists.
OURAYBYFLIGHT (MIKE BORUTA) – MILLION DOLLAR HIGHWAY
Ouray County
Extend this to cover the entire San Juan Skyway Scenic and Historic Byway, a 233-mile loop. This loop connects highways 550, 62, 145 and 160 and weaves you through Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride, Rico, Dolores, Cortez, Durango and Silverton. It’s a drive through some of the most spectacular aspen stands and views in Colorado and a trip back in time with unique museums, ghost towns, historic hikes, jeeping and OHV trails along the route. The drive is stunning in any season: spring offers hundreds of waterfalls along the route, summer brings fields of wildflowers, fall provides some of the most iconic golden-colored vistas in the state of Colorado, and winter gives you a high contrast trip with robin’s egg blue skies and endless white powder fields. DESTINATIONS TO THE SOUTH:
HANK CHRISTENSEN
(One-way Trip: approximately 9-19 miles, 15-30 minutes) Red Mountain Town and Ironton are no longer towns, but ghosts of a mining boom town that died in the 1920s-40s. The last resident left in the 1960s and now visitors may enjoy visiting the remnants of this once-thriving mining district. The vistas and old buildings in this area are beautiful.
SILVERTON
CLASSIC VISIONS PHOTOGRAPHY
IRONTON PARK & RED MOUNTAIN MINING DISTRICT
(One-way Trip: approximately 70-80 miles, 2 hours) Founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grand Railroad, Durango’s retail core is a historic Victorian downtown surrounded by endless outdoor adventure opportunities. Durango is home to Fort Lewis College, the Purgatory Resort and the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which offers one-way and round-trip options on a historic steam train between Durango and Silverton from the spring to the fall and into the valley north of Durango in the winter.

DURANGO
(One-way Trip: approximately 5-35 miles, 45-60 minutes) Before starting out from Ouray, be sure you have plenty of film in your camera for this incredible 24-mile drive; there are plenty of photo opportunities along the way. This stretch was originally a toll-road built in the 1880’s by Otto Mears. The tollgate was located just beyond the Bear Creek Falls pullout three miles south of Ouray. Silverton is “a gritty little mining town with Victorian pretensions” and features authentic western shops, restaurants, a historic train depot, and one of the best extreme ski areas in the country. Founded in 1875, the town is currently home to around 500 residents. (One-way Trip: approximately 105-125 miles, 3 hours) Ancient Native Americans built and lived in these cliff dwellings in the 1200s to 1600s. This park is one of the most beautiful around. Hike, bike, or drive around these unique ruins. The park protects 4,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. The ruins at Mesa Verde National Park are worth the drive. We recommend arriving as early in the day as possible to avoid the afternoon heat and then spending at least three to four hours at the park.
MONTROSE & BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK
(One-way Trip: approximately 3-13 miles+, 5-20 minutes) Ridgway State Park is a year-round recreational paradise that stretches nearly five miles into the Uncompahgre River Valley. Plan on spending the day there - hiking or biking the 15 miles of developed trails, gold medal trout fishing, taking advantage of the boat rentals at the full-service marina, camping, swimming, boating, waterskiing and lots more.

RIDGWAY STATE PARK
(One-way Trip: approximately 17-27 miles+, 1 hour) Considered one of the most scenic drives in the U.S.A., this pass travels through unique mountains, historic sites, and great opportunities for wildlife viewing and fishing. This route, laced with strands of aspen, is especially beautiful in the fall. 15 miles north of Ouray, turn east onto County Road 10. This adventurous day trip will take you into the heart of the magnificent Cimarron Mountains. The peaks of Chimney Rock and Courthouse Mountain will watch over you as you drive along this route which once was a cattle drive trail.
RIGS FLY SHOP – GUNNISON GORGE
DESTINATIONS TO THE SOUTHWEST: TELLURIDE
(One-way Trip: approximately 35-45 miles, 45-60 minutes) A National Historic District, Telluride is charming and serves up a world-class ski resort, free summer gondola, festivals galore and some of the best dining in the West. On your drive to Telluride, just west of Ridgway on Hwy 62, you will pass the magnificent Sneffels Range on the south side of the highway.

Over millions of years, the Gunnison River carved the canyon, which is one-mile-deep and 1,150 feet across at its narrowest. This is a great half-day adventure. Exhibits at the Visitor’s Center explain the history, flora, fauna and geology of the park. Enjoy the park by driving the scenic rim road, or by hiking into the canyon to fish, raft or climb. A variety of short trails lead to overlooks on the canyon rim.
(One-way Trip: approximately 70-115 miles. 2-3 hours) Founded in the mining and ranching heyday of Colorado, these towns have unique characters. McPhee Reservoir, the Dolores and San Juan rivers and other waterways attract wildlife viewers and water sports enthusiasts alike.

Ouray County
Celebrate Ouray County’s Rich Heritage Ouray County offers something for every history buff, from easy access to ghost towns, to scenic ranches and world-class museums. Prior to the mining era of the 1860s-1950s, Ouray was Ute Indian Country. As mining grew, so did the ranching and railroad industries that supported it. Today, Ouray County celebrates its unique Western heritage with museums dedicated to mining, railroading, ranching and the Utes, as well as private collections and a beautiful historic fairground that hosts the annual Labor Day Ouray County Fair & Rodeo.
Ouray County Historical Society
The Ouray County Historical Society was founded in 1971, and since 1976 the Ouray County Museum has been located in the Ouray Miners Hospital, which was built in 1887 by Francis Carney. The museum has three stories and 27 rooms with each room dedicated to a specific aspect of Ouray County history and one room dedicated to rotating exhibits. The Smithsonian Institution has called it the “Best little museum in the west” and Arthur Frommer’s Idiots Guide to the Rockies says, “If you visit one small museum in the west, make it the Ouray County Museum.” 32 – Ouray Official Visitor’s Guide • 2017 • 1-800-228-1876 • OurayColorado.com

Ouray County Ranch History Museum, Ridgway
The Ouray County Ranch History museum features the ranching history that was the lifeblood of northern Ouray County. The Museum’s collection originated with a gift of a local ranching history archive from Ralph and Ricky Lauren, which grew quickly with enthusiastic local donations. Parts of the collection can be viewed in the historic railroad station house in Ridgway. Here, visitors can enjoy rotating exhibitions devoted to the Uncompahgre River Valley’s CLASSIC VISIONS PHOTOGRAPHY rich ranching history.
Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad winds through spectacular & breath-taking canyons in the remote wilderness of the two-million acre San Juan National Forest for an unforgettable year-round adventure. Travel by a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive on the same tracks miners, cowboys and settlers of the Old West took over a century ago. Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879, which arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881. Construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed, and the train began hauling both freight and passengers. The line was constructed to haul silver & gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious. This historic train has been in continuous operation for 130 years, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives and rolling stock indigenous to the line.

Join the “True Grit” walking tour and get the scoop on those magical two months in 1968 when Ridgway was transformed into Fort Smith, Arkansas for the filming of True Grit. John Wayne won his only Oscar for his depiction of the crusty, one-eyed Marshall Rooster Cogburn in this blockbuster movie. Did you know Elvis Presley was considered to perform the movie’s hit soundtrack and the role of Texas Ranger La Boeuf instead of Glen Campbell? Or that Mia Farrow and Sally Field turned down the role of Mattie before Kim Darby was signed? That the Ridgway “True Grit” grossed $31 million and the 2010 version cost $38 million to make? Visit the downtown filming sites while your guide shares these and other interesting facts and anecdotes. The tour departs from the Visitor’s Center every Friday 11 a.m. from May to October. Attendees should arrive by 10:45 a.m. Reservations (call 970-626 5181) are required in May and October and recommended for the summer months. Cost $10; children 11 and under are free. Groups of six or more may schedule a tour anytime throughout the year. The True Grit walking tour makes a fun holiday activity and is just the ticket for family reunions, ladies outings or weekends, wedding parties and other get-togethers. Or use it to get company out of the house when you need some peace and quiet. Ridgway’s seven “True Grit” commemorative plaques each contain a map of sites for those who prefer a self-guided tour. The first two plaques are in Hartwell Park, but the tour may be started at any plaque location. Ridgway’s movie heritage also includes “Tribute to a Bad Man” (1956), “How the West Was Won” (1962) and “The Sons of Katie Elder.”
Ouray County
Hollywood Loves Ouray County Ouray County is a favorite among film buffs, especially those that love westerns. Our iconic mountains and charming historic small towns have been the backdrop for a number of classic films over the years. Many westerns were filmed in Ouray County including the original production of “True Grit” starring John Wayne. During filming, the nearby town of Ridgway was turned
JOHN BEDE - OURAY COUNTY COURTHOUSE
into a railroad town in the 1880s and Ouray’s own historic courthouse was featured for the courtroom scene in the film. Visit the meadows on nearby Owl Creek Pass and the wide vistas along the Dallas Divide to feel like you’re right in the middle of one of these classic movie scenes.
