What a girl needs…

R

aise your hand if you feel personally victimized by life. What a girl really wants is a break - and maybe a massage. Thanks to the annual What a Girl Wants Expo, women can find many products and services they want, need and desire under one roof. Each year, local vendors gather at the La Plata County Fairgrounds to showcase new products and old favorites for attendees. This expo features all things that interest women – jewelry, hair and nail salons, cosmetics, clothing and accessories, sports, health and fitness, food and cooking, self-defense products, self-improvement, home businesses and much more. This year, vendors from the past will return and new faces will also emerge on the scene. The theme of the day: treat yourself. Enjoy a nice lunch catered by Yellow Carrot and take part in the live radio broadcast with KISZ Country. Cross your fingers and toss your name in the drawing sponsored by the historic Strater Hotel. Though this day is about treating yourself, many items are unique and can’t be found in the mall or traditional shopping outlets, so stock up on great gifts for the special girls in your life. Grab free goodies and samples while signing up for drawings and enjoy the feminine atmosphere. The event is Saturday, November 12. Doors open at 10 a.m.

and the event ends at 4 p.m. Admission for adults is $3.

Why you should never skip girl’s night out G

reat friends stand by us through situations thick or thin, and may be the first ones we turn to for some extra support. But friends are good for more than honestly assessing wardrobe choices or picking you up in a rainstorm when your car breaks down on the side of the road. According to the Mayo Clinic, friends can be beneficial to your health. Good friends can increase your sense of purpose and boost your happiness. They’re also available to help you cope with trauma or tragedy and might just give you the push you need to change unhealthy lifestyle habits. Women who have close girlfriends may find that ladies’ night out is the ideal way to reconnect and find the time to let loose and have fun. When done responsibly, a ladies’ night out can make for the perfect evening. And

while you might be pressed for time and tempted to skip a night out on the town with your girlfriends, the following are just a few reasons why you should keep those plans. • Cut down on stress. Laughing and talking with friends can dramatically cut down on stress. A landmark UCLA study conducted in 2002 concluded that girlfriends are stress-busters for women and have an impact on their overall mood. Oxytocin, a mood-elevating hormone, is released when women are around their friends, increasing feelings of euphoria. Considering stress can take its toll on physical and mental health, enjoying an evening out with friends can be a fun and simple way to combat stress. • Let it all hang out. Ladies’ night out allows women to put their cards on the table — whether they’re discussing mundane fashion trends or looking for some heartfelt advice. Chances are your friends will not judge you, and you won’t have to bite your tongue like you might have to when sharing your concerns with other people. • Connect with other adults. Parents of young children may appreciate ladies’ night out for the chance to get out of the house. You also may enjoy conversations that do not focus on school or kids. Ladies’ night out is also a great opportunity to enjoy a meal, drink and/or movie without being interrupted by little ones. • Ladies’ night out can help you keep in touch with yourself. According to Irene S. Levine, Ph.D., creator of The Friendship Blog and author of “Best Friends Forever: Surviving a Break-Up With Your Best Friend,” other women shape you as a person. Female friends provide virtual mirrors that allow you to see who you are and who you want to become. Maintaining that connection to yourself can be just as important as staying connected with your friends. • Enjoy a chance to catch up in person. Many people now do the bulk of their communicating via texting or email. Ladies’ night out presents an opportunity to converse face-to-face. That means not having to exert energy trying to infer tone or meaning behind emails or wondering if those emoticons are masking something unsaid.

234508

• Have some fun. One of the key benefits of going out with girlfriends is that you’ll have your partners in crime ready to join you for a night of unbridled fun. Karaoke, dancing or crowd-watching is even better when you have friends backing you up. November 12, 2016 ~ What a Girl Wants ~ 7

Saving makes cents T

he holidays are right around the corner. For most Americans, the budget is tight this time of the year. Between holiday travel, traditions, meals and gifts, it’s hard not to break the bank. However, gifts don’t have to be extravagant – it truly is the thought that counts. Even for those difficult ones on the giftgiving list, saving money while searching for the perfect present is easier now than ever before. First make a list of whom you plan to buy gifts, and a few ideas of what you might want to purchase for them. Once you have some ideas, these five tips will help you save some cents and stick to a holiday budget. 1. Compare and coupon. Before venturing out to local shops and stores, or driving miles to spend an entire day shopping, do the research. Compare prices online for products you can find in multiple places. If there are certain stores that will fill a variety of your holiday shopping needs, look for coupons to shave the price a bit more. Magazines and newspapers are gold mines for savings. Online, sites like RetailMeNot.com have deals for different products and overall discounts. Log on to individual department store websites and download coupons. No coupons in sight? Chat with a customer service representative to see if they are offering any deals. They often have coupons available, but they are just waiting for a customer to ask. 2. Sign up for rewards. Rewards programs offer customers an easy way to receive coupons and information on sales. While spam is a side effect of

Like It! Love It!

By Hunter Harrel

signing up for rewards, avoid filling your personal email with junk by creating a separate, shopping only email account. Collect the coupons and keep track of rewards points more easily through this separate account. You will be thankful you did. 3. Avoid shipping costs. Shipping costs sometimes outweigh the deals you find online. Even with a great coupon and standard shipping, the product could be cheaper if bought in store. To avoid overspending, try to shop local when possible. If you must shop online for a certain gift, check out freeshipping.com for days that website will offer to ship for free or chat with a customer service representative about deals they offer to receive free shipping. 4. Hit the sales. Pay attention to the flyers in the mail and newspaper. Saving money by purchasing a product during a sale is one of the best ways to avoid overspending. Don’t be afraid of the big Black Friday and Cyber Monday offers. Do the research and set up email alerts for the big-ticket items on your list. Technology gifts, such as laptops, cameras and TVs, are offered at the lowest prices during these events. Don’t forget to compare the prices for similar department stores though. Familiarize yourself with what is on sale and go in with a solid purchasing plan to avoid impulse purchases and overspending. 5. Get creative. Not every gift has to be something bought from a store. Thoughtful and useful gifts are often the most appreciated. Make something special that fits their personality or lifestyle. There are a million ideas for every person in your life online. For a booklover, consider making them a special bookmark and pairing it with a nice coffee mug filled with their favorite tea, coffee or hot chocolate mix. Have a special recipe someone on your list loves? Bake them the treat and pass along the recipe.

Holiday drink recipes

hile the leaves flash vibrant colors before their powdery winter burial, people are reminded of the events to come. As we enter November, the season filled with thanks, giving, tidings and joy approaches quickly. For many, much of this time is spent in the company of loved ones. Others begin planning and coordinating to host gatherings with friends, coworkers and family. Whether enjoying a feast or exchanging gifts with friends, spice up gettogethers with these seasonal cocktails. Honey Apple This sweet cocktail brings out the best flavors in the warm, local Colorado Honey Whiskey. This drink represents a perfect fade from fall to winter in the Rockies. Mix 1.5 ounces of Colorado Honey Whiskey with .75 ounce sweet and sour. Top with Apple Cider over ice and garnish with a couple apple slices.

Honey Apple

Hot Buttered Rum This warm winter favorite takes a bit more preparation, but is worth the effort. Four a serving of four drinks, combine the following ingredients in a bowl and mix: 2/3 cup of brown sugar, 1 stick of unsalted butter, 1/4 cup of honey, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves and a pinch of salt. Blend with electric hand mixer until smooth. Add 3 /4 cups of spiced rum and two cups of boiling water. Stir until the butter mixture dissolves. Divide into four cups and garnish with cinnamon sticks. For a Pumpkin spice twist, add a tablespoon of pumpkin spice seasoning and a half-teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Spiced Pear Rum This cocktail features local Honey House Distillery’s Red Cliffs Spiced Rum. The rum is carefully blended with Honeyville Honey for a sweet and smooth finish. Mix rum, pear juice and a splash of lime for the perfect sweet, seasonal drink. Garnish with a pear slice and cinnamon stick. Pumpkin Pie Martini Who says pumpkin pie is for Thanksgiving only? This cocktail is a decadent dessert drink. There are a million ways to make this drink, but this is one of the easiest. Combine one tablespoon of each of these ingredients: sugar, vodka, half-and-half, pumpkin puree and maple syrup. Add one teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice and one teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix and serve. Whiskey Tea Soothe a scratchy throat and catch a buzz with this warm, easy concoction. Steep 1 tea bag of your choosing in ¾ cup of boiling water for five minutes. Remove tea bag and stir in one teaspoon of honey. Add one ounce of whiskey and a squeeze of lemon juice. Garnish with a lemon wedge, if desired and enjoy. Durango Bloody Mary Though folks tend to lean into darker spirits, like whiskey and rum for winter drinks, Vodka has its place in many cocktails. The classic Bloody Mary is great for brunch and will warm you right up. Try Hex vodka with Honeyville’s Durango Style Bloody Mary Mix for an easy cocktail. 243196

Prolong the life of your hair color

M

en and women have been coloring their hair for centuries, experimenting with different materials and chemical combinations to achieve their desired looks. In the mid-1800s, chemists began to work with non-natural dyes for the textile industry. At least one of the chemicals used in a dye derived from coal tar formed a color when exposed to air. This molecule, called para-phenylenediamine, or PPD, eventually would go on to form the foundation for many permanent hair dyes. Both men and women color their hair, but women tend to be more avid colorists. Many women stick to a strict schedule of color maintenance, returning to the salon every four to six weeks for touch-ups. At an average cost of between $50 and $80 for a single-process permanent color, according to polling by Angie’s

List members (foil treatments and balayage highlights can cost more), the price of keeping color looking fresh and vibrant can add up. It’s understandable that women would be interested in prolonging the life of their color to help stretch out their budgets. Explore the different ways to extend the life of hair color and enjoy healthier-looking locks. • Understand the difference between products. Hair color can come in different formulations. Semi- and demi-permanent colors deposit color without lightening and will wash out gradually after a certain number of shampoos. Permanent hair colors use a combination of components to open up the hair cuticle so that natural hair color can be lightened and color deposited as well. Someone unsure of a color may want to try a semi-permanent formulation and then look to the permanent equivalent when satisfied so that the color will last longer.

• Wash with cooler water. Keep color longer by turning down the thermostat in the shower. Hot water can cause the hair shaft to expand and lead to more dissolution of hair color molecules. Washing and rinsing with cool water can lock in the color longer. • Skip the sulfates. Sulfates are detergents used in shampoos that produce those lush suds many people equate with cleanliness. Sulfates can strip dyes from the hair and lead to premature fading. • Use a color-extending product. Color-extending products come in two varieties: those that deposit small amounts of color to help keep the overall shade fresh, and others that don’t add color but help seal the cuticle so that existing color will not fade away. The Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested nine brands, including 24 products, and found most of the products, such as color shampoos, helped dyes last longer than regular shampoos. • Protect against the sun. Your skin is not the only part of the body that needs to be shielded from the sun. Ultraviolet light can cause premature fading of hair color. Look for a product that defends against UV damage, and wear hats when out in strong sun. • Head back to the salon. Some salons offer free or inexpensive glossing treatments. This 10-minute service can extend the life of your hair color. By following some easy hair care tips, anyone can keep their color lasting longer. Clients should speak with their stylists if they need more direction and advice about hair color.

Lightweight sweaters or blazers can be worn over short sleeves or sleeveless ensembles when temperatures have yet to reach their midday highs. eople who put a lot of thought into their wardrobes know that one of the challenges presented by the changing seasons is figuring out what to wear and when. For example, as spring transitions into summer, the occasional chilly day is to be expected, removing summertime attire like shorts and sleeveless shirts from consideration. Such sudden changes can be problematic, as not everyone has the room to store multiple seasons’ worth of clothing in their closets and drawers. Yet, with a little ingenuity, men and women can make their seasonal wardrobe transitions a little easier.

long-sleeved shirts, meaning basic colors that will blend well with any outfit. • Bright colors: Bright colors go hand in hand with warm weather. Keep bright-colored items you typically wear during other seasons so they can be paired, if necessary, with summer staples. This may include a thick sweater for cooler nights on the beach or trousers for formal evenings out on the town. • Maxidresses: When shopping, invest in maxidresses. They’re easy and cool for hot days and nights, but they also can be refashioned if you wear them with long sleeves or knit sweaters. When covering up, use a waist-cinching belt or scarf to add structure to the look. • Vary shoes: While flip-flops and other sandals may be summer staples, have a few other pairs of more traditional shoes at the ready as well. One can get away with boots with a maxi-dress. Ballet-style slippers are delicate enough for the season and provide extra foot coverage for comfort. If you walk a lot, look for shoes with structure, as summer footwear tends to provide less support than footwear worn during other times of the year. Transitioning clothing from one season to the next takes a little ingenuity. While it may not require a person to keep all of his or her clothing out of storage, transitioning from one season to the next may require reserving a couple of versatile items that can be worn throughout the year.

Separate acne myths from facts

A

cne tends to affect people when they are most self-conscious about their appearances — the teenage years. UC Davis Health System estimates that 85 percent of teens get acne, with the first outbreak starting around age 11 for girls and a few years later for boys. But acne is not exclusive to teenagers. Adults also can get acne, with 30 to 40 percent of adults experiencing it. Despite the prevalence of acne, some people remain misinformed about the skin condition and the best ways to treat it.

What is acne? Acne, which includes pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, and pustules, develops when the tiny pores associated with hair follicles on the face, chest and back become blocked by an oily substance called sebum. Sebum glands are stimulated by hormonal changes. If the follicles become blocked, sebum cannot escape properly from the pores and a whitehead can occur. Blackheads happen when whiteheads are exposed to the air. If bacteria multiply in blocked pores, they can cause painful, red pimples. Pimples that grow and become filled with fluid and pus may develop into cysts. Acne forms thanks to hormonal changes and the natural oils in the body. Contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused by consumption of greasy foods or poor hygiene. Acne is not a reflection on cleanliness. It tends to be a natural part of adolescence for many people. Treating acne Treatments for acne have come a long way because dermatologists are more informed about acne than ever. Benzoyl peroxide is a common treatment for acne that helps kill bacteria in the skin and dry out oil ducts. There are various types of benzoyl peroxide, and individuals are urged to start with the lowest concentration and build up if it proves ineffective. Gently exfoliating the skin to remove dead skin cells can help keep pores clean and prevent new pimples from forming. If benzoyl peroxide doesn’t work, a doctor may prescribe retinoids or antibiotics. Common acne myths Popping pimples may seem tempting, but it’s an ineffective way to treat acne. In fact, popping pimples can lead to scarring that will stay with a person for life. People should resist the urge to pick at pimples. The sun will not clear up acne. The sun can inflame the skin, something you want to control when treating acne, and overexposure to the sun may cause acne to spread, say the acne experts at Proactiv. It’s also important to know pores do not open and close. Therefore any product promising to close pores to prevent acne formation is misleading. Removing dead skin cells through gentle washing can minimize the appearance of large pores. Acne is a chronic condition that requires daily skin care to keep breakouts at bay.

Makeup application guidelines for any woman P

eople rely on makeup to put their best faces forward. Cosmetics can enhance natural beauty or completely transform a person’s appearance for a dramatic effect. Women are most likely to wear makeup, and many rely on it to cover up subtle flaws and bring out their best features. Makeup application is a skill that requires technique, and that can take years of practice to master. While it’s possible to get by with basic application abilities, knowing some of the tricks of the trade can offer the flawless look women seek. • Exfoliate your skin. The most precise makeup techniques can be hampered by unprepped skin. Start the process with clean, exfoliated skin to ensure that dry skin and any errant flakes are removed and will not clump up under the makeup. Use products designed for your skin type. Consult with the expert at your favorite cosmetic counter to find out which formulations will give you the desired results. Exfoliation does not require expensive equipment. You may be successful with just a mild cleanser and a nubby washcloth. Finish with an SPF-containing moisturizer. • Apply a primer. Primers can help concealer and foundation set. Applying primer is similar to a painter prepping a canvas. Even without foundation, primer can soften the appearance of your skin. • Hide dark circles and blemishes. Use concealer to even out your complexion. According to the experts at Laura Mercier, it’s a myth that concealer

should be a shade lighter than your skin tone. Select a matching color and apply in little stripes with a makeup brush to blend evenly and to avoid a masked look. • Brush on foundation. You may be tempted to apply foundation with your fingers. While effective for a sheer application, applying foundation with your fingers can introduce bacteria and oils to your face. Foundation brushes can offer more precision. With regular cleaning, brushes will not add germs to your face. Light brush strokes can be blended together to give a matte, airbrushed effect. A light dusting of powder, particularly in the spots that tend to appear shiny, can set the foundation. • Use a light touch. It’s easier to add than take away with regard to applying eye shadow. Therefore, start with a light hand and build up to the desired smokiness. To learn even more eye-shadowing techniques, go for a professional application and ask for some instruction. Purchase those products and keep practicing at home. Makeup can play up a person’s features, hide any imperfections and help individuals look their best. Techniques are easy to learn and can be perfected with time and patience.
