Bear in mind, TGR’s “story” (which was clearly marked as satire on its page) appeared the day after Vail Resorts announced it was adding several Midwest and East Coast resorts to its insanely popular Epic Pass. The news apparently got the world wide web humming with ski bums wanting to know more.

“Epic Resorts will be proud to offer skiers and riders access to one of the most famous alpine environments in the world – however, it’s gonna be f***ing dangerous,” Epic Resorts CEO Rhonda McSally was quoted as saying.

The piece went on to say the pass included climbing equipment, oxygen, a tent at basecamp and Sherpa assistance. The story also promised a chairlift built to 26,000 feet, roughly 3,000 feet below Everest’s summit and just on the sunny side of the famed “Death Zone.”

Of course, most astute news and powder connoisseurs should have smelled this like a sweatsoaked ski sock from a mile away. Then again, this is the same discerning public that bought the whole “Storm Area 51” conspiracy. And likely gobbled up TGR’s “Flaming Land Shark” piece a few days earlier, hook, line and sinker.

In the rumble seat Smellavision, you’re so 1999. A movie theatre in Denver has gone “4DX.” Billed as a step above your run-of-the-mill 3-D movie experience, the Regal UA Denver Pavilions theatre offers not just smell, but simulated weather and moving seats to further jostle moviegoers into the moment.

According to a press release, the moving chairs “sync perfectly with blockbuster films, and weather and scent effects surround the viewer to create a multisensory experience.”

Of course, the price for all this multisensory overload is not cheap: tickets to the 4DX “Lion King” cost nearly $24. Not to mention the cost of choking hazards when ill-timed mouthfuls of popcorn coincide with seat activation. Then again, you can get a similar effect sitting in a frigid theatre next to a guy eating Taco Bell while the kid behind you kicks the back of your seat for free.

LaVidaLocal My two cents Our South American neighbors who live within a 125-mile strip of exposure along the heartlands of Argentina and Chile had the chance this summer to witness a total solar eclipse. We North Americans had our viewing opportunity in 2017. Of course, we’ve all been warned not to stare directly into the sun without eye protection, but that didn’t stop our fearless leader who stood on the White House balcony looking directly at the sun – twice – before giving in and donning a pair of solar glasses.

Two years ago our long-time California friends flew to Salt Lake City with their adult daughter, rented a car, then drove to Idaho for a chance to experience the U.S. version of a total eclipse. I asked for a report with all the details when they returned but what I got back was even better: “44 hours on planes and in airports, 32 hours on the road, 2 minutes and 41 seconds of totality, but the look on our daughter’s face: totally worth it!”

Proclaimed by a true heart. A testimony from a mother who knew enough to pay attention, not to her sun, but to what was even more important – her daughter – at precisely the right moment. So little of what I’ve heard, read or seen during our well-publicized eclipse event has made more sense.

When I consider how a 4.5-billionyear-old ball of energy can momentarily capture our national attention, I can’t shake that other image of our blue world wobbling on its political orbit. Nothing, not the moon or even any Hollywood death star sent to destroy our planet is capable of out-sizing our planet’s ego. It’s bigger than the sun, and constantly erupting. It’s getting so I can’t glance at the television or internet anymore without approved safety glasses.

One thing that can be said for the sun and the moon together is that they momentarily unified our nation. People of divergent political views crowded together within “the zone” – a continuous strip of land from Washington State to Florida – to witness a solar event that hadn’t occurred with such a direct exposure across the continental United States since June 8, 1918. In some of the more populated areas, when the sky turned dark in broad daylight, reportedly, everyone cheered.

I didn’t hear any of the uproar in 2017. I’d driven to the summit of Lizard Head Pass and sat quietly on a plastic chair watching as our celestial

orbs approached each other, knowing full well they would never quite mesh. Rather than traveling north to the best viewing zone, I reasoned that my experience would feel more realistic, more aligned with the spirit of these times. World leaders and local despots trying to upstage each other from across the globe, from China to North Korea, Venezuela to Saudi Arabia, and Russia to Washington D.C., international intrigue connected like a series of circus lights for the sake of a political sideshow.

Across our heartland, Americans leaned anxiously toward the real show they might never see again. But what is totality, after all, other than a moment, maybe a minute or two, nothing more, corona oozing from behind the moon, a perfect ooh, ahh, fabulous memory to place on our continental shelves? Once encountered, we needn’t ever witness another total eclipse. It remains imprinted on our minds, and then we start to look for that kind of correctness in everything we do.

For me, the titans would eventually clash. I tried but couldn’t continue my nonstop-stare at the sky, so I took breaks by glancing toward the horizon, then at the ground, tracing little arcs in the dirt with my bare feet, like doodling, marking time as the great transit prepared itself. I doubt I missed anything of universal importance by turning an occasional blind eye to the sun.

Sometimes perspective improves by taking a short rest. It even provides the brain with a break, permitting our lofty gray lobes to realign.

Then I almost missed the moment when a curiosity distracted me. My toes had inadvertently unearthed two lost copper pennies, one of them heads up, with Lincoln winking in the pale sunlight. As I leaned forward for a closer look, my folding chair folded, dumping me on the ground. I rolled onto my back just as those two astronomical discs in the sky came close to merging. I lay there, my safety glasses somewhere out of reach, made fully aware of how my life will never be perfect, and the presumption that any earthling knows what’s best for everyone else is just solar gas.

I was down there with the ants and these two tiny tokens of legal tender at an elevation of roughly 10,000 feet, about as close to the sun as I ever wanted to be.

Avoid clichés (like the plague) may be sound advice, but this time it can’t be helped. That’s my two cents.

The space program’s golden years To the editor, The 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 astronauts landing on the moon brings back memories of my involvement in our space program.

I served a two-year tour as the meteorology/assistant intelligence officer on an amphibious group staff. Our primary mission was to transport and land marines and army personnel on foreign beaches in support of military operations. I was responsible for forecasting the weather for the transit of the naval task force and the weather in the landing zone and on the beaches.

Additionally, the naval amphibious groups shared responsibilities with naval aviation units for recovering spacecraft and astronauts involved in the manned space flight programs of the 1960s.

I was the recovery area meteorologist on the Gemini 8 spacecraft recovery ship USS Boxer, which was deployed in the Atlantic in March 1966 to retrieve the astronauts.

Due to flight problems the spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific.

Once again, I was the meteorologist on the recovery ship for a Gemini space flight – Gemini 10, which successfully completed its mission to conduct rendezvous and docking tests with a target vehicle in space from July 18-20, 1966. My ship, the USS Guadalcanal, almost missed out recovering the astronauts when NASA decided the Atlantic recovery site was too rough and switched the recovery to the Pacific. Admiral William P. Mack, recovery area commander, called me up to the flag bridge and put me in direct communications with NASA Houston, and as the recovery area meteorologist I convinced NASA Houston the weather and sea conditions were within recovery specifications. The spacecraft landed in the Atlantic without any problems and the astronauts were picked up by a 4

helicopter and taken back to the USS Guadalcanal within a half hour of splashdown July 21, 1966.

Stop political gridlock: vote To the editor, All of us know our voting system is lacking, to say the least, with gerrymandering, lobbying, etc. The Mueller Report, along with his recent testimony over Russian influence in the 2016 election to place Trump in office, assured the public that changes need to be implemented where our vote is legitimately recorded.

Let’s not forget the embarrassing “Hanging Chad” from the 2000 presidential election, where old school unreliable voting machines were in use when state-of-the-art methods with a paper trail could have brought us a different president – without 9/11, a war in Iraq/Afghanistan, and the list goes on.

Just think, in 2000 we had no debt and the economy was great with Democrats & Republicans working together starting with the 1992 presidential election. Sounds like a fairytale now with the 20 years of gridlock & nastiness.

Hopefully, we can do better in 2020 & the 40 percent of Americans who didn’t vote in 2016 & everyone else who did will feel confident with real trust to get out & vote.

Trump lets racism rear its head To the editor, I have to admit, I feel like a cock-eyed optimist when, after the historic election of Barack Obama, I really thought we were on our way to a post-racial America. Ha! I have never been so wrong. In fact, Obama’s election woke an ugly white sleeping giant.

Obviously, America has a long history of racist actions and policies.

Back in the beginning, white Americans were given

legally and socially sanctioned privileges and rights while these same rights were denied to other races and minorities. Affluent white Anglo-Saxon Protestants enjoyed exclusive privileges in education, immigration, voting, citizenship, land acquisition and criminal procedure throughout our history. Not much has changed.

Major racially and ethnically structured institutions include slavery, segregation, Native American reservations and boarding schools, naturalization laws, and internment camps. It’s an ugly history no one but a bonafide racist should be proud of. Formal discrimination was largely banned in the mid-20th century, and it came to be perceived as being socially and morally unacceptable.

Until now.

Obama’s election was the tipping point for the large number of Americans who hold racist views. Donald Trump is the face of that reaction. The Trump family has a long history of racism that goes back decades. Donald’s father, Fred, at age 21, was arrested “on a charge of refusing to disperse from a parade when ordered to do so” at a Ku Klux Klan rally/riot in Brooklyn. Fred continued his racist housing policies for several years after the Fair Housing Act of 1968 made discrimination in housing illegal. When Donald took over the family business, the discriminatory policies continued. The Trump Management Corp. was sued by the federal government in 1973 for refusing to rent to African Americans. In 1983, the New York State Division of Housing found that two “Trump Village” residences were 95 percent white.

Trump’s statements and behavior speak for themselves.

He placed ads calling for the execution of five young black and Latino men accused of rape, who were later shown to be innocent and when he and Ivana came to the Trump Casino, bosses ordered all the black people off the floor. Trump’s “birtherism” (the false charge that Barack Obama was not born in the United States) conspiracy theory was just what conservatives, Republicans, white nationalists and everyday racists wanted to hear.

His campaign caught on like wildfire and even today

his support among Americans is about 45 percent and nearly 90 percent among Republicans. That’s depressing.

Some of your co-workers, family and maybe even friends support Trump and therefore his words and deeds.

Even worse, many people out there will publicly rebuke him but secretly he’s their guy. Cowards.

So today, Donald Trump is president of the United States. “How does that make you feel?” asks the therapist.

It makes ME pissed, and disgusted and depressed. Like it or not, on the world stage, Trump represents the American people. His words and actions are viewed as OUR words and actions. We elected him. We haven’t arrested or impeached him.

But it’s not just Trump. The entire Republican leadership and nearly all of the GOP either support Trump’s racist words, policies and actions or at best, remain silent.

These chicken shits privately may condemn him but publicly? Crickets. After Trump’s most recent racist outburst, telling four brown and black duly elected female members of Congress to “go back where they came from” Senate Majority Leader Turtle neck McConnell told reporters “Trump’s not a racist.” Based on what? Where’s the evidence to back up that BS? So the 2020 election season is upon us. Trump is clearly using racism and bigoted remarks as a campaign strategy. That’s the feature not the flaw. And it appears to be working! Trump’s favorability has gone up since his racist outburst. The poor saps that pulled the lever for Trump in 2016 can be forgiven (I guess) for wanting to stir things up and take a chance on someone totally outside of Washington.

Plus, Hillary was a deeply flawed candidate. I get it.

But now that we’ve seen his policies, cruelty, countless lies, corrupt administration and incompetence, we have a chance to undo some of that damage. The world is watching. Are you racist, America?

Call of the wild Tipton releases competing public lands package

ne came out back in January. The other was released just last week. Both are authored by members of the Colorado delegation in Congress. Both are meant to protect public lands in the state. Both are sweeping, comprehensive packages with several legislative pieces.

But, there are some stark differences between the two.

First to come out was the Colorado Outdoor Recreation & Economy, or CORE, Act. It was introduced in late January by Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., and co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Lafayette.

Essentially it encompasses four previous bills: the San Juan Wilderness Act; the Continental Divide Recreation, Wilderness and Camp Hale Legacy Act; the Thompson Divide Withdrawal and Protection Act; and the Curecanti National Recreation Area Boundary Establishment Act. These four pieces would result in the protection of about 400,000 acres of public lands across Colorado. Some would become new wilderness, others wilderness study areas, and some would be guarded from future oil and gas development.

The most recent public lands package came from another member of the Colorado congressional delegation, Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Cortez. His version is called the Colorado Recreation Enhancement and Conservation Act, or Colorado REC Act. Not to be outdone, Tipton’s package has five pieces. These include the San Juan Mountains Recreation and Wilderness Act; the Sangre De Cristo Wilderness Act; the Colorado Land Management and Recreation Act; the Yucca House National Monument Boundary Revision Act; and the Curecanti National Recreation Area Act. Overall, the REC Act would designate 70,000 acres of new wilderness and remove the Wilderness Study Area designation from about 39,000 acres.

While the CORE Act is already making its way through congressional committees, Tipton’s version – which he called a discussion draft – has yet to be formally introduced.

He’s publically reached out to residents and stakeholders for comment, but those who are already speaking out aren’t happy with it.

Conservation Colorado, an environmental group based in Denver, called the Tipton version “Wilderness Lite.”

“Representative Scott Tipton’s proposal is a deliberate attempt to muddy the waters when it comes to our public lands,” Sarah McCarthy, West Slope field manager for Conservation Colorado, said in a statement.

“If Colorado’s leaders want to support meaningful protections for our public lands, they should co-sponsor the existing CORE Act, a comprehensive bill whose protections have been vetted and supported by hunters, anglers, businesses, local elected officials, and Coloradans across the state for over a decade.”

Although the CORE and REC acts have key differences, they also have some similarities.

One thing the two have in common is the San Juan bill.

Under Bennet’s CORE Act, it’s called the San Juan Wilderness Act, while Tipton’s version is the San Juan Mountains Recreation and Wilderness Act. Both, however, call for permanent protections for about 60,000 acres in the San Juan Mountains.

This includes designating about 30,000 acres of new wilderness near Telluride, Norwood, Ouray and Ridgway and about 20,000 acres between Ophir and Silverton to create the Sheep Mountain Special Management area. It also prevents future mineral development for about 6,500 acres in Naturita Canyon.

“We’ve been asking for engagement on the San Juan bill since he took office,” he explained. “This is a good sign.”

But, Tipton’s REC Act is still missing some key elements.

One of those is oil and gas development protections for about 200,000 acres in the Thompson Divide near Carbondale and Glenwood Springs.

Buickerood described the CORE Act’s Thompson Divide piece as a community-driven, grassroots effort that’s been years in the making. Like the San Juan bill – which was put together by a diverse group of stakeholders over the past decade – it’s been thoroughly vetted by the people who would be most impacted by it.

“The CORE Act is much more in tune with grassroots communities,” Buickerood explained.

But, instead of incorporating the Thompson Divide protections in his version, Tipton added the Colorado Land Management and Recreation Act. This piece of the REC Act would remove more than 39,000 acres of Wilderness Study Areas in southwest and northern Colorado – including Menefee Mountain, Weber Mountain, Cahone Canyon and more – essentially lifting the protections those designations provide.

Tipton said the Bureau of Land Management, the agency that would take over management of these lands, found

these areas to be “unsuitable for wilderness designations.”

The reasons he gives for the release is fire mitigation and better management of noxious weeds.

But, that reasoning doesn’t fly with everyone.

“It’s surprising and difficult to understand why he wouldn’t pick up the Thompson Divide bill,” Buickerood added.

Another major difference between the two acts is Camp Hale.

One of the sections in the CORE Act is the Continental Divide Recreation, Wilderness and Camp Hale Legacy Act. This piece calls for the permanent protection of about 100,000 acres in the White River National Forest along the Continental Divide, including the creation of a first-of-itskind National Historic Landscape area surrounding Camp Hale.

Camp Hale was the home to the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, who not only were crucial to the Allied victory in World War II, but also helped spawn the state’s outdoor recreation and ski industry.

“That’s a really unique, signature piece that would honor our ski culture,” Buickerood said.

Although both Bennet and Tipton have said publically they’re willing to work together, they have yet to take a seat at the same table.

Even when congressional leaders are getting along, it can take years to pass public lands legislation. And with the current climate in Washington, D.C., it’s unknown how far either of these proposals will get in the coming year. n

WHISTLER, B.C. – Adoption of electric cars will have to accelerate if Whistler has any hope of attaining its goals of reducing greenhouse gases. It would also help if new buildings had no natural gas pipelines.

Transportation is responsible for 56 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new report by the municipality, and buildings another 32 percent, the result of burning natural gas for hot water and heat.

In 2008, the municipality set a goal of reducing emissions 33 percent by 2020. Barring a miracle, that will be impossible. The community reduced emissions an average 3.8 percent annually through 2012. Then came the backsliding period through 2017, when emissions grew an average 4.7 percent per year.

Now, the community is back on track, with a 3 percent decline last year. A determined push to emphasize the virtues of mass transit may be partly at work. Transit ridership has increased 77 percent on weekends since 2016.

Is there hope for electric cars accelerating? That’s the question in many states, including Colorado, now as utilities have started pivoting sharply toward wind and other renewable sources.

Colorado in early 2018 adopted a goal of having 940,000 electric cars on the state’s roads by 2030. Now, as a result of aggressive new actions by state legislators and Gov. Jared Polis, that goal looks too modest. One of his first steps as governor in January was to direct the state’s Air Quality Control Commission to study whether to adopt the zero-emission standards encated by California and other states. This would have the effect of requiring that car dealers in Colorado add substantially more electric vehicles for sale, increasing consumer choice.

On Monday, Colorado and major automakers announced they had reached a deal that would result in automakers introducing more electric cars while earning more credits for earlier sales. The commission must approve the compromise agreement.

Everywhere, though, cost matters, and so do the range of EVs. The most costly component of an EV is its battery, but battery prices have dropped 85 percent in the last nine years, pointed out Maximilian Kniewasser, the climate change coordinator for Whistler. As for range, that remains a concern, but again there are advances. Some luxury models can go up to 300 miles per charge.

New charging infrastructure, including the fast-charger that can refuel a car in less than 30 minutes, has also calmed range anxiety.

As for buildings, they’re a more difficult proposition. Here and there, some builders are constructing homes that have no natural gas lines. All the heating, both of space and water, is done by electricity and improved technology called air-source heat pumps. Several units in a 23-unit affordable housing project called Basalt Vista, 18 miles down-valley from Aspen, use those and other technologies, as does a science school in Avon.

In Whistler, a four-story 53-bed affordable housing project is being completed under the energy-efficient standards of Passive House. Pique Newsmagazine reports that the new housing complex will have 43 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions as compared to a similar structure built in 2015.

Telluride gets a public parking structure TELLURIDE – As goes Aspen and Vail, so goes Telluride. The town is adding 70 parking spaces in a new parking facility in its downtown area, its first parking garage not associated with a lodge.

How much to charge?

The Telluride Daily Planet says Vail gets $20 to park for three to four hours during winter (free in summer). But like Vail and also Aspen, Telluride plans to allow electric cars to charge for free. “We’ll see what the electric bills look like in a year,” said town planner Lance McDonald.

She’s fast, but she can’t outrun a grizzly CANMORE, Alberta – Emma Lunder can run fast. She’s an Olympic biathlete who lives in Canmore, at the entrance to Banff National Park, where she often jogs along on trails.

But when she saw a sow grizzly with two cubs from about 50 meters (160 feet) away along a trail recently, she tried other tactics.

As the sow charged, getting to within 20 meters, Lunder screamed, put her hands over her head and backed up.

As she did, she got out her bear spray. That was a good thing.

The bear stopped, then charged again. “When she got to three to four meters away, I sprayed the bear,” Lund told the Rocky Mountain Outlook. “As soon as it hit her, she threw her head down, did a 180 and then sprinted away, and then the cubs ran with her and I ran in the other direction.

“It was definitely terrifying,” she said. “It was purely an instinct, and I’m super-impressed that I did it.”

Wildlife officials said they suspected the bear was feeding on buffalo berries but had otherwise been a wary and secretive bear.

Will Vail help Crested Butte compost?

CRESTED BUTTE – Vail Resorts has set a goal of zero waste for its various properties by 2030. Now that it owns Crested Butte Mountain Resort, does that mean it will get engaged in community composting there?

The Crested Butte News explains that Guerrilla Composting ceased operations late last winter. The owner was overwhelmed by the amount of compost but also work and cost.

“In two years of operations I collected over 200,000 pounds of food scraps from our local homes, inns and restaurants,” Julie Donahue said. She was outgrowing the capacities, in space and her financial resources. She also pointed out that delivering a composting service to a low-density, highly dispersed community takes time and is not energy efficient.

She believes Vail & others may be looking at an anaerobic digester, which requires no oxygen & can also be used to produce energy.

Although businesses are trying to move away from traditional single-use waste items, everything now is going to the landfill.

An option, but maybe not a good one, is to haul composting material 27 miles down-valley to Gunnison.

There, Western State University will begin composting this fall using the A900 Rocket, which can take everything from garden waste to meat and animal waste. The university bought the technology with the aid of a $140,000 federal grant through the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment.

Nathan King, director of sustainability at Western, estimates the dining halls generate 25 gallons of compostable waste daily.

Vail Resorts has partnered with a company called Eco Products to address strategies at its various resorts.

Teton school to drop Redskins mascot

DRIGGS, Idaho – The NFL football team may continue to be the Washington Redskins, but Idaho’s Teton County High School will be adopting another mascot. The school board in July voted 4-1 to abandon the Redskins mascot that had been used since 1929.

The move was bitterly opposed by a segment of the community.

There were two walk-outs by students at the high school last spring and T-shirts with the message “Save the Redskins” were distributed.

At least in the immediate aftermath of the vote, there were recriminations, the Washington Post reports. “Will all of you that wanted the change please wear shirts saying such. That way I know who to hate,” one user wrote on a Facebook page titled Teton High Mascot Debate.

“You’ve stolen from me and I will not forgive or forget.”

The debate began in 2013, when Teton’s schools’ superintendent unilaterally decided the 450-student high school should drop the moniker. The school board didn’t back him. But the high school slowly began distancing itself from the mascot. Some teachers stopped using the school’s letterhead. And the school newspaper changed its name from The War Cry. By last year, only the football team still wore uniforms that displayed the word “Redskins.”

No replacement mascot has been chosen, and the school board specified that no public money will be spent to make the changes.

The cost has been estimated at $30,000.

Idaho’s two largest tribes, the Shoshone-Bannock and the Nez Percé, both advocated for the change. Shoshone-Bannock have also asked the Idaho State Board of Education to stop using names such as savages, redskins and Indians as school mascots, reports the Teton Valley News. Maine this year banned use of Native American mascots by public schools, colleges and universities.

Some 49 schools still use the name “Redskins,” down by almost half from 1989. But the Washington Post notes that a 2016 poll found that 90 percent of Native Americans said the Washington Redskins’ team name did not bother them.

An unforgettable underdog Sandlin nails it again with sophomore novel ‘The Bird Boys’

e’re back with another world-beater from heroic Cinco Puntos Press, the varicolored storefront publisher in the Five Points (Cinco Puntos) section of El Paso. Husband and wife Bobby and Lee Byrd have been publishing literature there since 1985 – 130 books, about 15 a year.

The corporate New York publishers don’t see much threat from the small indie presses. But if you’ve been following “Murder Ink” over the years, you’ve probably come to realize that the bantamweight publishers and indie bookstores are beginning to shake the foundation under the conglomerate heavyweights. Now, of course, the big houses are raking in profits like never before with every disgraced politician spilling his septic conscience over how he never really meant to follow the road of yellow bricks, despite the gold dust on his Gucci loafers.

“Murder Ink” gushed about Cinco Puntos’ Girl Gone Missing by Marcie Rendon last May, and now we have a near photo finish with the sophomore fiction title from Lisa Sandlin, The Bird Boys. Sandlin’s 2015 debut novel, The Do-Right, won the coveted Dashiell Hammett Award from the International Association of Crime Writers and the Shamus Award for the Best First Private Eye book from the Private Eye Writers of America. The Bird Boys will mirror those accolades and add some, if I have right the direction of the wind. This is a spectacular piece of writing coupled with another fully formed, unreliable female protagonist and a plot that’s finely textured with just the right gravitas.

We read fiction, particularly crime fiction, looking for

satisfaction in three areas. The most obvious is reading for plot – a good story. Another is appreciation of good character development – people we get to know. And some read for the wordsmithing – exceptional writing. If you find all three in the same book, it wins prizes, and it will be well worth sacrificing a lunch out to buy it. Sandlin knows the craft, no question. Her writing is finely cultivated; we can feel we intimately know her characters. And Sandlin’s story is classic swindle, surprise, murder and coppers before P.O.S.T certification and ethics panels.

The Bird Boys is a classic private eye plot that takes place in the Southeast Texas town of Beaumont, on the Neches River not far from Port Arthur on the Gulf Coast. Delpha Wade is four months out of Gatesville Women’s Prison after having been convicted of voluntary manslaughter for killing a man with his own knife who was stabbing and raping her. She was in her twenties when she was locked up 14 years ago for something she’d be fêted for in most other states. She’s hollowed out, counting every caged hour for 5,000 days. Left Gatesville like a crate-trained lioness: nowhere to go or how to get there or why and for what.

With only four months out of stir, Delpha’s parole officer asks start-up PI Tom Phelan to give Delpha an interview for a secretarial job. Phelan’s a good man, a mostly honest

former roughneck living off disability checks for a finger lost on a job. But he’s reluctant to take on the exposure of hiring a jailbird – how much lower will the cops think of him now? – and only agrees to the interview with full intentions of telling the ex-con the job’s been filled.

Delpha has head damage after being locked in a cell for nearly half her life, and she’s bled out of emotion. But she doesn’t want to go back to prison and needs a job to bridge the distance. Before Phelan can do his brushoff, Delpha answers a ringing phone, books their first client real smooth-like, makes up a file and answers another call. She politely refers to a dazed Mr. Phelan to see if he can fit the caller into his busy first-day in business. We pick up the story here. After Delpha proves invaluable, even smarter than her boss, they catch a case to look for a lost brother of a walk-in client with cash.

If you read Rendon’s Girl Gone Missing, you’ll never forget Cash Blackbear. If you read Sandlin’s The Bird Boys you will never forget Delpha Wade. There’s no sense pandering to your curiosities with a plot teaser. The Bird Boys has it all for a discerning crime fiction reader, and you’ll want to learn what came before and order The Do-Right. They’re both paperback originals of solicitous length and at the price of lunch.

hat makes a festival memorable? Is it the music? The beer? The food? Family activities?

The cause it supports?

For the organizers of the second annual Pine River Festival, which takes place from noon until 9:30 p.m.

Saturday at Bayfield’s Eagle Park, it’s all of the above.

“After last year’s event a lot of people came up to us and said, ‘What a great event,’” organizer Karl Herr said.

Herr is the associate executive director of the Be Frank Foundation, the beneficiary of the Pine River Festival.

“We bring people together and celebrate music, celebrate kids, but also celebrate our community.”

The festival is a multi-faceted soirée that combines a traditional beer fest with youth, local and national bands, a barbecue competition, family activities and more. It started last year as a summer beer festival for the Pine River Valley but quickly grew into something much larger.

It all gets started with a grand tasting between noon and 5 p.m., with unlimited pours from nearly 20 breweries, cider houses, distilleries and wineries. Simultaneously, there will be a BBQ competition with free tasters.

Kids activities like a bouncy castle, slide, balloons and face painting make this a family affair.

Starting at 5, the free pours will end and the event switches its focus to music. Two veteran Americana groups of past Four Corners Folk Festivals on Reservoir Hill in Pagosa Springs – the Accidentals (at 6 p.m.) and the Steel Wheels (at 8:30) – will headline. A trio of local bands – Midnight Backhand, High Country Hustle and

“What goes better than beer and barbecue in the park?” Greg Allen, co-owner of Bayfield’s Bottom Shelf Brewery, said. “They just fit together really well. We go to a lot of brew fests where it’s just beer and not a lot else going on.”

Which is why Allen brought in the barbecue component – which seems to be a popular feature. “There’s a lot of people around here who are really into smoking meat,” he said.

As co-owner of Bottom Shelf, Allen oversees the restaurant side of the operation. His menu is an innovative one that fuses barbecue with northern New Mexican cuisine and down-home, Southern-style favorites.

He’s revered for his pulled pork and brisket, all smoked on site. But what sets him apart are appetizers like beerbattered, deep fried deviled eggs or the Driptorch, which is an order of spring rolls stuffed with grilled chicken, green chiles, bacon and cream cheese.

The general admission ticket gets access to all the music, unlimited pours during the five-hour beer fest, and 10 sample tickets for barbecue. Attendees can vote

for their favorite grub and suds.

“This year we have seven barbecue cookers, and we’re getting pork and brisket donated from Farmers Fresh Market in Ignacio and Shamrock Foods,” said Allen. “The competitors are going to do their special rubs, smoke it and serve up samples for tasting.”

All of the local brewers from Durango and Pagosa Springs will pour, as will brewers from as far away as Cortez (Main Street), Buena Vista (Eddyline) and Lyons (Oskar Blues).

“We’re bringing four different styles,” he said of Bottom Shelf, which typically offers as many as six mainline brews and a couple of seasonals and specials in their tap room.

Let’s face it – a five-hour grand tasting will inebriate many attendees. In keeping with the small town, family -friendly vibe, festival organizers have partnered with Celebrating Healthy Communities to arrange shuttles to and from various locations in La Plata County. One will start at Albertsons, stopping along the way. Another runs to Forest Lakes with a stop at Bayfield High School. A third runs to and from the Sky Ute Casino.

The last shuttles will depart after the music is over, around 9:30 p.m.

“People can enjoy themselves and have fun and still be responsible in their choices of transportation,” said Herr.

Beer, barbecue and bands aside, the main purpose is to raise funds for Be Frank, which benefits school-age students in the county.

“Be Frank has been around since 2013 as an official nonprofit,” said Herr, a retired educator. “During the4

2016-17 school year, we took over the management of the after-school extracurricular orchestra programs in Durango.”

In addition to offering instruction, Be Frank also provides financial aid and instruments to those in need. “We have unlimited student scholarships available and a good supply of student-sized and good quality instruments,” he said. “If a family says they can only afford 10 bucks, we’ll make up the difference.”

More than 300 students were involved with Be Frank this past year. While Be Frank and its brand-new summer program, the Creative Music Conservatory, are rooted in classical and orchestral styles, Herr said it’s expanded this summer.

“It’s not just classical, but exposure to bluegrass, Americana, rock, blues, hip-hop and jazz,” he said. “Students will get a good dose of classical, but we’re also teaching them to apply some of those techniques to a different genre to expand their horizons.”

The participating bands fit Be Frank’s mission. The Accidentals, Steel Wheels and StillHouse Junkies all count music educators among their ranks.

“The Accidentals had played a couple of years ago at the Four Corners Folk Fest,” said Herr, who plays guitar in the local bluegrassflavored group Agave and is a regular latenight jammer on Reservoir Hill and at the Durango Bluegrass Meltdown. “I went to one of their workshops and was so impressed with how they actually engaged people in that workshop. A lot of times they say bring an instrument, but you never even get it out of the case, you never touch it. They actually had people playing, they gave solos, and

they had such a natural way of working with everyone who was there.”

After the workshop, Herr approached Katie Larson, multi-instrumentalist for the Accidentals, about Be Frank. Last August, prior to the Four Corners Folk Festival, the band did a workshop at the Bayfield Performing Arts Center for every secondary orchestra student in the county. “We had some students up on stage, some of the young folks that play with the San Juan Youth Symphony, and they did some demonstrating and work with students on soloing and playing extemporaneously,” Herr said. “They had a great connection with the students.”

Likewise, the Steel Wheels have a teaching background. “They run a festival and kids’ camp called the Red Wing Roots Festival in mid-July,” said Herr. “They have students playing with them as part of that festival. They have a heart for passing on the gift of music.”

The Steel Wheels, who bounce between bluegrass and alt-country, has impressed Herr with their vocal stylings at past Pagosa festivals. “Their four-part harmonies are pretty stellar,” Herr beamed. “They will send chills down your spine.”

The StillHouse Junkies also have music education pulsing through their veins.

“They have really gotten some great momentum going and seem to be well-received wherever they go,” Herr said, noting that the trio recently returned from the Grey Fox Festival in upstate New York. In addition, fiddle player Alissa Wolf was an early part of the Be Frank Foundation and now works with Durango-based IAM Music.

Dear Rachel, I made a deep, dark promise to myself this year that I would keep on top of my tax receipts so that next April 14 is not a flying crapshow.

Well, it’s worked, in so far as I have all my receipts in one place. OK, fine, three places. But only because the first two stacks fell over to create the need for a third one. Seriously, how do other people do this? The absolute last thing I want to do when I get home is tally how much money I spent.

Honestly, I’m not sure how that works, because I’ve never had so much money that I can pay someone else to handle all my money for me. But think how cool that would be.
