The site recently ranked the best American cities for Stay-Oktoberfesting, with none other than our Mile High capital coming in at No. 2.

Now in its 50th year, the Denver Oktoberfest, which happens this weekend and next, attracts some 250,000 people to its biergarten. The event was voted by Maxim and USA Today as “The Best Oktoberfest” in the United States. According to WalletHub, Denver also ranks second in most breweries per capita (behind Portland, Ore., which arguably has much better drinking weather.)

LaVidaLocal Walking in someone else’s shoes “They lied to me,” the man said in a Texas drawl. “They said Engineer was easier than Snowden. This is hard.”

“Yeah, they may have misled you,” I said. “This mountain does have some technical sections, it’s no gimmie.”

The man then went into a rant about how it was everyone’s fault but his that he couldn’t hike the second class terrain above him. It was the guidebook’s fault, it was the people who told him about the hike, and most of all, it was his hiking shoes, which to me looked just fine.

“Let me see your shoes,” he said. “I think I have the wrong kind of shoes. Those are the shoes I need.”

By then, clouds were a brewing and there wasn’t much time for chit chat. “It only gets more difficult,” I explained to him, as my girlfriend, Amber, and I kept moving, hoping to summit before the rain started.

We tagged the peak, with more dark clouds rolling in. By the time we made it back into the trees, lightning was cracking and thunder was rolling, and we were moving as fast as we could to get back to the car.

That’s when we came upon “Mr. It’s Gotta be the Shoes.” I cruised by him, but he stopped Amber.

“Hey, what kind of shoes are those?” he inquired. “I need to get me some of them. That’s why you were able to climb to the top, huh?”

Amber politely told him what kind of shoes they were, all while I’m thinking: good shoes will never replace fitness and preparedness. I wanted to scream, “It ain’t the shoes brother! It’s because your ego is bigger than your fitness level! You gotta put in work to hike mountains.”

Like most good comebacks, though, the thoughts arrived too late. Plus, there were more important things to tend to, like running from lightning.

That night we recounted the story for friends over happy hour, and of course they had similar stories of unprepared tourists with egos the size of Texas. And that got me thinking: what is it about humans that makes us so unaware of our limitations? And why do we think other people care if we can climb the mountain or not?

I used to care. I came West 20 years ago with no identity other than being a guy who liked to go to jam band shows. Then I found climbing, and with it my identity.

Quickly after, I met the old-timers, those who came up climbing in the late ’60s and early ’70s. I learned many lessons from them, but the one that stayed with me the longest was the message of humility. In many sports it’s all about trying to be the best. But in climbing, it’s all about trying to be your best; not just for climbing but your best person. And a big part of that was being humble.

I think it’s because sooner or later, the mountains will humble you. They will bring you to your knees. Whether it’s a dangerous situation, the loss of a friend or

simply going too long without food, when you spend enough time in the mountains, you realize it’s their world, you’re just passing through.

Sometimes I wonder if the seriousness of the mountains is properly conveyed to tourists who arrive thinking they will conquer them. After all, every time one drives into the state, there is an awesomely quaint sign that reads “Welcome to Colorful Colorado.” But maybe there should be a tagline under it reading, “these mountains want to kill you.”

Too much? Maybe. But the mountains don’t care about your ego, your desires or your climb. They simply are, and quite honestly, that’s something us humans are not very good at. We want the quick fix, the fast money, the big car, the widescreen TV, the massive RV and the house on the hill. We want so much that it brings us down.

These days, my favorite place to climb is in the desert – oh how lucky we are to be so close to both the mountains and the desert. I used to think that climbing in the desert began in the last few decades. But, over the last few years, as I’ve explored more and more remote places, I’ve learned that humans have been climbing vertical rock there for thousands of years. I’ve found pottery shards and structures in impossibly high places from the Ancestral Puebloans, brought there long before the modern shoe, let alone the climbing shoe, was invented. These people were not climbing for fun, they were climbing for survival. And their bravery to face these vertical rocks with nothing more than a yucca rope and yucca sandals is absolutely heroic and mind blowing.

The great outdoors are humbling, but I also think that humility is something we need to learn from others. Getting humbled, but also being encouraged to be humble, is a great pairing, like a cold beverage in the hot desert.

The other thing I think we all need to keep in mind – and we might need to hear this often – is that no one else really cares how hard you send it. Often the top tier athletes are the most humble human beings. I think it’s natural for our egos to question our legitimacy in the land of supernatural athletes, especially when we’re having an off day. But again, the reality is: NO ONE CARES how hard you crush, and generally, I think the only thing people care about is how nice and respectful you are to your fellow human on the trail, the mountain or the climb.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. And if you start that journey with humility, it will be much more meaningful than the bullshit of conquering a mountain that will conquer you in the end; no matter what pair of shoes you’re wearing.

The real king of the road To the editor, Jesse Anderson’s opinion piece last week entitled “Bicycles are not cars” was a somewhat obfuscated attempt to justify cars rights on roadways while trying to referee a Facebook group and placate/educate local cyclists. To wit, he stated; “… my car is more important,” “I’m more of a motorist than I am a cyclist,” “… if you’re a bicycle zealot who doesn’t own a car.”

Be that as it may, what bothered me enough to write in was that he stated; “If you’re a cyclist, and you want to enjoy the privilege of sharing the road ... .” This statement reads to me that when in a car, people have a “right” that people not in cars don’t. That having a drivers license isn’t a privilege, but rather a right. That being on a road in a car IS the priority, and issues such as responsibility, humanity, courtesy and safety all come after.

And then there’s something called history (from which we often do not learn)– when in the early 1900s, pedestrians and nonmotorized conveyances were what roads were for. And only after auto/pedestrian deaths started to rise and cities like Cincinnati tried to limit motorized conveyance, did the auto industry groups introduce the “Model Municipal Traffic Ordinance” and jaywalking laws, which quickly tuned roads into motorized right-of-ways. (Read Peter Norton’s Street Rivals: Jaywalking and the Invention of the Motor Age Street).

Jesse’s article seemed to me to justify motorists having the right of way. To not be “stuck behind a bicycle,” or a “cyclist not taking up a lane of traffic,” etc. And that in closing he gave cyclists the status of being “definitely humans.” To which all I can say is, Cody’s right, “steel bumpers make quick work of aluminum wheels.”

I suggest roads are best-suited for human use, regardless of the type of conveyance. Humans are impatient,4

make mistakes, are quick to judge and are fragile. I avoid cars whenever I can, on and off the road, as I do people like Cody. But I know for fact that the Codys are out there, and if I’m on my bike, I’m the one who stands to lose the most if a collision happens, whoever is at fault. Anyone not in a car but on the road is subject to the dominant paradigm, but everyone on the road is responsible. Life (& death) is the ultimate king of the road.

What kind of country is this?

To the editor, The United States of America is comprised of real estate that has been surveyed, mapped and divided into 50 distinct, individual regions that exist on the outer crust of this planet. This is where the populace resides, with addresses, zip codes, etc. Now, a 51st state has come into existence: the “State of/denial,” where most of us are right now because we cannot face the facts that are too bad to be true.

Donald Trump did not invent corruption in government, it was alive and thriving in our nation’s capital, created unwittingly by the founding fathers of this country. The genesis was when they chartered the first bank and did not include sufficient checks and balances written into the document. That was the birth of corporate America, which has evolved with the compliance of generation after generation of members of both major political parties, the pot and the kettle, into an all-powerful and corrupt system that imposes its will on our government.

Mr. Trump is a mirror image of that system, but with one boat-rocking deviation. He has changed the modus operandi from slithering silently and politely as dirty deeds are accomplished to a modus of in-your-face lying, bullying, bragging and even announcing for all to hear what dirty deed he plans next.

The composite structure and functionality of the

Trump Administration, which has seamlessly become conjoined with Trump enterprises, has created a serious crisis in this country, as well as others on this planet.

Trump is being allowed to rape the Constitution of the United States of Americans while being aided by the stooges, puppets and parrots that he has appointed/hired.

They aid and abet criminality while drawing salaries paid

by American taxpayers. The most notable example is the attorney general of this nation, who has proven to be nothing more than the president’s personal valet, shining his shoes and memorizing the script he is instructed to read. Trump has attracted several groups that seem to consider him as some sort of heroic icon. Some persons in the media not only applaud but defend his criminality, his mantra of hate and discontent, his racism and his routine disrespect of humanity. The white supremacy groups, the ultra-rich – these people are all hanging on to the president’s shirt tail. They cling tightly in spite of being dragged along through his droppings, which will leave them permanently stained and filed in the historical records of this country in a folder marked, “The Trump Years – Criminality, Hate, Discontent and Racism for Proift.”

Too bad and too sad to be true – a velvet pillow for corporate America and a bed of spikes for us. What the hell kind of a country is this? That is a very legitimate question echoing all over America – in the hallways of VA hospitals, the front desks of health clinics, the homes of mass shooting victims, homeless shelters, homes and offices of all women, the federal prison camps/cages on our southern border, and all the various locations where millions of people are suffering the agony of the opioid addiction caused by a corrupt system of conflict of interest and selective enforcement.

What the hell kind of country is this? The question burns like a wild fire while our elected politicians refuse to act. These people elected to serve the best interests of our citizenry are hiding in the dark nooks and crannies of our nation’s capital, shirking their duties as first respon-

ders to address a crisis in government. Like Nero, they fiddle with themselves while the firestorm continues, unabated. Silence is their only answer.

The question remains, perhaps to be carved in twostory-high letters as public art on Mount Rushmore, as a historical “Monument of Truth.” A monument with acres and acres of blank wall space where citizens who are screaming the question can scrawl or carve their personal experience. These stories can become answers that reflect the truth in detail for all to see exactly what this county has become.

Now, that’s a wall with a meaningful purpose.

Reduce, reuse, refill, repeat

To the editor, After my shock following viewing the documentary “Albatross” (Chris Jordan), I was excessively recharged about global effects of ubiquitous plastic. The film (watch with a google click) features the fatal effect of plastics on an albatross colony. Be prepared to force yourself to watch to the end. You probably agree there is a current ramp up for us humans surrounding single-use plastic, as there should be. The question continues, “What can we do about it?”

One of the emerging possibilities locally is a trip to the new business WeFill on North Main. This is not an advertisement – it is a statement of paradigm shift. The system: I supply the clean container, WeFill supplies the contents – all the way from dish detergent to body lotion to foot soak salts and much more. I also found bamboo toothbrushes, dental floss in little glass bottles, mesh produce bags and beyond. It’s a feel-good field trip every time I go.

Heads up, however – at packing-up time, there is not a single-use plastic bag to be found anywhere … so, well … we all know what to do about that.

Dry ideas City releases drought plan for public comment

ith seemingly more dry days ahead than behind, officials with the City of Durango put together a plan.

Released last week and open for public comment through Nov. 15, the city’s Drought Management Plan attempts to tackle all the problems that might pop up when the Southwest again suffers drying times.

From drought monitoring to water restrictions, city staff looked at exactly how residents get water today and how to address limits to that supply in the future.

Although the plan comes on the heels of the 416 Fire, it didn’t come as response to the parched summer season of 2018.

Once public comments are received and integrated into the final plan, it heads to the Durango City Council for review and approval. Assistant Utilities Director Jarrod Biggs is hopeful that can happen before the end of the year, but if the holiday season gets the best of the Council’s schedule, it might have to wait until January or February.

The process actually began back in 2016 but moved slowly over the next couple years. Things picked up steam after the city received grant funds from the Colorado Water Conservation Board last year.

With help from Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions, a planning firm with clients around the world, Biggs said things began in earnest last November.

“The goal (of the plan) is to remove the ‘crisis’ from the City’s drought response efforts,” the draft reads, “reduce the hardship caused by water shortages, and raise public confidence in the actions taken to address short- and longterm water shortages.”

conditions become more frequent.

Based on a report put out by the University of Colorado in 2014, which the draft plan references, the state’s climate has warmed by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit in the past three decades and that trend is expected to continue.

Biggs said the reality is Durango is facing the effects of a changing climate. “We just need to look at it in its face,” he added. “And we need to deal with it.”

Durango sits on the cusp of the desert and mountain interchange, Biggs explained. If temperatures rise and the land continues to dry up, the Southwest could see earlier runoff. This means storage would play a larger role in supplementing the city’s water supply, particularly at the end of the year.

However, Durango is unlike other Colorado communities in that it has limited storage options. “We don’t have as much reservoir storage as most,” Biggs said. “We don’t get to go to our big tank and see if it’s full, we have to look at stream flow.”

The city’s primary water source is the Florida River, the secondary one is the Animas and there’s limited storage between its two reservoir options. Over the decades, city officials and elected leaders looked at different ways to increase that storage.

One of those ways was by purchasing shares of Lake Nighthorse. The issue now is figuring out how to get that water from the reservoir to residents, which includes treatment and supply lines.

Last year, when the city was suffering from exceptional drought conditions and dwindling reservoir supplies, city officials turned to some of the heaviest users and asked them to voluntarily limit water consumption. It certainly helped, but it was never a community-wide request to all residents.

That’s something that would be different in the new plan.

Moving forward, the city’s response will include more public outreach and education when facing a drought, making sure the public knows exactly what conditions are and what can be done to improve the situation.

The first strike: Global walkout for climate Ahead of the United Nations Summit on Climate Change this week, students from Fort Lewis College and elsewhere around the world plan to walk out of school on Fri., Sept. 20, as part of a global climate strike. The goal is to highlight the impacts of climate change and demand action from elected leaders.

“It is more important now than ever to take strong action on climate” JoJo Johnstone, Durango’s Climate Strike Organizer, said in a statement.

The plan is to converge on Durango City Hall, 949 E. 2nd Ave., from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The strike is organized on a national level by Future Coalition, and locally sponsored by Indivisible Durango.

The draft plan also lays out a Staged Drought Response Program. Broken down into four sections, it contains specifics on trigger points, like reservoir and snowpack levels, and water restrictions, like voluntary requests and mandatory limits.

BLM advisory council to discuss e-bikes

rea residents will have a chance to weigh in on the topic of e-bikes on public lands next week when the Bureau of Land Management’s Southwest Resource Advisory Council meets Wed., Sept.

25 in Dolores. The all-day meeting takes place from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the BLM Tres Rios Field Office, 29211 Highway 184.

Planned agenda items for the meeting include a discussion about managing ebikes on public lands, a proposed fee at the North Fruita Desert, aka 18 Road, Campground and a proposed fee adjustment at Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center.

The meeting is open to the public, with the e-bike discussion set to begin at 8:30. A public comment period is scheduled for 1111:30 a.m. People who want to make a statement during this time are also encouraged to submit a copy of their statement in writing for the administrative record.

“We value the diverse perspectives from the Southwest RAC who represent the communities we serve,” BLM Southwest District Manager Stephanie Connolly said.

On Aug. 29, Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt issued an order that all nonmotorized trails on BLM lands that are currently open to bicycles also be opened to e-bikes as well. Land managers were given

14 days to implement the rule and 30 days to issue guidelines for e-bikes.

The rule affects several popular trail systems throughout the region, including parts of Phil’s World and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument in Cortez; trails in Moab and Fruita; and parts of Horse Gulch, Overend Mountain Park and Animas City Mountain, in Durango.

The Trump Administration says the rule is meant to allow access to public lands for all Americans, especially those with physical limitations. However, opponents argue it is merely an attempt to appease the e-bike and motor manufacturing industry. They also say the decision was made without a proper pubic process.

“No one in the conservation community has anything against e-bikes,” Michael Carroll, director of the Durango-based Wilderness Society said earlier this month. “We just want an open process, and we want e-bikes in the right places.”

As for the rate increases for camping at the BLM’s North Fruita Desert Campground, the 40-acre area is adjacent to the popular 18 Road trail system. The area offers vault toilets as well as 58 individual campsites for $10/night. Dispersed camping is allowed outside the campground for free with fire pans and disposable toilet systems.

MountainTownNews Late-changing trees leave questions VAIL – It’s an odd autumn so far in Colorado’s high country. The aspen leaves that usually have started their dazzle by mid-September almost uniformly retain the deeper green of summer chlorophyll.

“It’s kind of shocking to me,” Crested Butte Mayor Jim Schmidt, who observed the fall turning in Crested Butte since 1978, said.

Schmidt tells visitors to expect peak colors in Crested Butte between Sept. 20-26. On Monday, he reported, yellow was almost entirely absent.

On a trip from Denver to Grand Junction last weekend, trees also had yet to change. The color shift normally occurs a week or two earlier in Summit County than in Vail, where I lived from 1985-98. In a Facebook post Sunday, I joked that we went to the edge of the Earth in search of yellowing aspen. My joke was an allusion to the Grand Mesa, where a road goes to a point called Lands End. There, at an elevation of 10,500 feet, you can look down almost 6,000 feet to the valley below.

There we did see a lone yellowing aspen.

Acquaintances responded to my Facebook post with observations of columbine in full bloom in early September, one at 13,000 feet near Telluride and another at 12,000 feet near Vail.

Climate is rife with the noise of weather, with wide swings year to year. “Average” never perfunctorily falls on a date or number.

That said, we know the edges of summer have been expanding in Colorado and elsewhere. In Gunnison, retired geology professor Bruce Bartelson has been curating local temperature records. Growing season has expanded to 80 days, up from 67 days previously.

Most notable have been the rising night-time minimum temperatures.

In Aspen, Jim Kravitz was cautious. He’s the director of the naturalist programs at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies. “I’m not going to speak boldly & say we’ve broken new ground,” he said.

Kravitz does not have deep records of aspen changing in their namesake town. But he has been taking photographs the last eight years and has also spoken with long-time residents. They tell him that the late color is unusual but not unique.

Many things influence when and how aspen change, including both temperatures and moisture but also genetics and light. Spring hung on late this year, and then late summer was exceptionally hot and dry.

What ensures the transformation are clear, bright days & cold nights. They could come soon, producing peak colors by the last weekend in September. “I’m thinking it will happen quick,” Kravitz said.

Will Moffat’s rails ever reach Park City?

CRAIG – David Moffat never lived to see his rails stretch all the way from Denver to Salt Lake City. Now comes a proposal that would get them closer, putting the railroads within 105 miles of Park City.

Moffat was a banker whose fingers were everywhere in Denver as well as in the mining camps upon which the young city depended. From the earliest days, Denver wanted a direct link to Salt Lake and then California.

In 1861, just three years after the first gold strike, boosters had retained mountain man Jim Bridger to identify a route across the steep wall of mountains. He took them across Berthoud Pass and past what later became the base of the Winter Park ski area, more or less the route of what is now U.S. 40.

For his railroad, Moffat instead chose an even higher notch in the Continental Divide, 11,660-foot Rollins Pass. The rails reached Steamboat Springs in 1908 but to go farther, Moffat needed more money. He was in New York City in 1911, trying to scrounge the money to do so, when he died.

Two years later, the railroad reached Craig, and in 1928, a tunnel under the Continental Divide was completed, delivering passengers to within 100 yards of the ski lifts of what in 1938 became the Winter Park ski area. Trains were crucial to the early days of both Winter Park and Steamboat.

Now comes a plan for furthering the rails westward from Craig.

The Craig Daily Press reports that the Rio Grande Pacific Corp. has filed notice of its intention to extend the rail line 185 miles west to Myton, Utah. If this happens, that puts the rails 105 miles short of Park City.

Two routes are being considered, the lesser one costing $5 billion.

The Seven County Infrastructure Coalition in Utah has filed notice with a federal agency that it seeks to ship crude oil, gilsonite, coal

and other mineral and agriculture products out of the Uinta Basin.

Trains could also import fracking sand and other items needed for oil and gas production southwest of Dinosaur National Monument.

Grizzly gets last laugh on drunk BANFF, Alberta – Whatever was he thinking? Obviously, the 35year-old man from Saskatchewan was not thinking of getting a $4,000 fine when he got out of a pickup truck in Banff National Park and began shouting at a young grizzly bear.

Two nearby photographers who had been observing the grizzly for some time captured what happened next. Devin Mitsuing shouted at the bear and threw rocks for five or 10 minutes, then adopted a boxing stance before charging the bear, which fled.

He and companions were later found in British Columbia, at the Radium Hot Springs, too inebriated to be allowed to drive. To compound things, when his day in court came, he failed to show.

Prosecutors, said the Rocky Mountain Outlook, had charged him with disturbing wildlife in a national park. Jeremy Newton, the prosecutor, also said that not only did the man from Saskatchewan put himself in danger, but he put every other person who comes across this bear in danger in the future.

A tale of two very different economies KETCHUM – Again comes a report of two economies in a mountain resort valley, this time from the Ketchum-Sun Valley area.

“We have two types of residents,” David Patrie, outreach director for Sun Valley Economic Development, said in a recent public briefing. “We have those who derive income from outside the county. They could be trust-funders, or they could work remotely for Google. Our economy works pretty well for those folks. Then we’ve got people who depend on Blaine County to make a living.

It’s not working as well for them.”

“Juiced by outside money, home prices rose much faster than local wealth,” the Idaho Mountain Express explains. “The strain is showing in the labor market. Companies can’t find workers at wages they can pay, and workers can’t find a place to live – let alone one they can afford.”

About 16 percent of people in Blaine County are uninsured.

That’s higher than the state and national averages, says the Express, and higher than in the counties where Aspen, Jackson Hole, Park City, Steamboat Springs and Breckenridge are located.

Lodging but without the staffing needs JACKSON, Wyo. – Here comes yet another high-end resort project, this time along a ski run at Jackson Hole.

The 134,000-square-foot property is to be “highly amenitized,” Rob DesLauriers, who is representing the owner of the property, said. He has developed two previous lodging properties at the base of the ski area. The plan is for indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a spa, plus a restaurant.

Building a luxury residential project was more appealing than a hotel, he said, because it requires less staff in a seasonal economy.

Big affordable housing project is a go EAGLE – Eagle’s elected officials have approved the first draft of what the Vail Daily describes as the largest real estate development in the last decade. Of the 500 units in The Reserve at Hockett Gulch, 400 are to be one- and two-bedroom rental units. Some of those units will be deed restricted, available for rental only to those who work in Eagle County an average of 30 hours a week. The project plans call for significant density, about 16 units per acre.

New fossil discovery a feisty little thing LAKE LOUISE, Alberta – After all these years of giving, the Burgess shales of the Rocky Mountains continue to produce new and interesting fossils. The latest, reports the Rocky Mountain Outlook, is a species described as a pair of large, egg-shaped eyes and a multi-tool head with long walking legs.

The scorpion-like creature also has several pairs of limbs that could sense, grasp, crush, cut and chew.

This find occurred in the Marble Canyon excavation site on the British Columbia side of the Continental Divide, relatively near Banff. The shales are famous for the exceptional preservation of fossils from 500 million years ago.

iver season may be winding down – but the jones never sleeps. Nor does the need to highlight the importance of rivers, in everything from the health of the ecology to the health of our souls. Next weekend, the Mancos Valley River Film Festival brings the two together with its third annual event, featuring two nights of river adventure on the big screen.

The event is hosted by Mancos Valley Resources, a nonprofit that offers financial support for dozens of grassroots projects in the area. Proceeds will help benefit the Mancos Conservation District, which will use the funds for a cleanup of the Mancos River as well as a river science station at Mancos Middle School. Additional sponsors include Alpacka Raft, Four Corners Guides and Osprey Packs.

The event started in 2017 as a fundraiser for workers who lost their jobs after the Western Excelsior fire and featured short documentaries about pack rafting and other river sports. It then expanded last year to feature films about bikes and boats, and now is reaching even further, to tackle the bigger issues of water in the West.

In sea kayaks, mind you. The impetus is to take advantage of the lake’s historic lows due to drought and overallocation to go in search of the fabled lost wonders of Glen Canyon. The so-called “place no one knew” was buried by the waters of Lake Powell in 1963, a date mourned by conservationists and river runners to this day.

Funded by National Geographic, the film also includes interviews with activists, experts (including Emerald Mile author Kevin Fedarko) archaeologists, scientists, and government and Navajo officials, all of whom weigh in on the far-reaching effects of the dam. (There is also a Durango-La Plata County airport cameo when a member of the expedition is sent home prematurely for an unfortunate incident entailing hot sand and a fire pan. Don’t worry – she makes a triumphant return.)

The film was also sponsored by American Rivers and Black Diamond and won an honorable mention at the 2019 Durango Independent Film Festival.

The spices of the corn (PS: I love you, just not as much)

hen people say they like pumpkin spice, what they mean is they like pumpkin pie-flavor. The difference between spice and pie being a few hundred calories’ worth of cream and sugar, not to mention actual pumpkin (or squash, as is the case with much canned pumpkin pie filling).

Take a look at the ingredient list of any iconic vehicle for pumpkin spices, such as the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, and you will see more than just a sweet, spiced coffee drink. There are actual pumpkin particles in that cup, in the form of puree. Ditto for your breakfast cereal, pretzels, doughnuts, protein powder, ice cream, kombucha, kale chips, cream cheese, bagels, yogurt, popcorn and PopTarts. We like pumpkin pie, and so they feed it to us.

Dunkin’ rolled out its full Pumpkin Spice menu Aug. 21, apparently in an effort to beat Starbucks to the pumpkin spice punch. It’s one thing to put the spices in deodorant, moonshine and e-cigarettes year-round. But when it comes to putting pumpkin pie in the actual food we eat this far out of season, that’s too much.

If people want to consume their pumpkin pie spices in the pre-fall, and clearly they do, I suggest combining them with corn. Corn is sweeter than squash, and if prepared properly, creamier as well.

So sweet and creamy, in fact, that corn, pumpkin spices and a pinch of salt are all you really need to make a pumpkin pie-flavored drink.

Pumpkin pie spice is a mixture of ground cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice and ginger. These roots, seeds and bark all share the trait of somehow tasting sweet without actually being sweet. In the presence of actual sweet ingredients, they really pucker up. But they can also be a bit raspy and rough, and a dose of cream makes these qualities more palatable, without obscuring them.

That is part of the magic of pumpkin pie.

The only difference between pumpkin pie and chai spices is the inclusion of cardamom. Chai spices are often served in conjunction with sweet, creamy ingredients, along with steeped bits of a caffeine-bearing plant – tea, in this case. While pumpkin spices have recently, and

some would say wrongly, found a niche as a coffee flavoring, chai spices – and their accompanying milk, vanilla and honey – have flavored black tea for centuries.

Back to that corn-spice drink. When my wife took a sip, what she said was music to my ears. Our kids swarmed into the kitchen, took sips and said the same thing she had. Even the girl next door, less accustomed to my kitchen research projects, agreed: “It tastes like pumpkin pie!”

This was encouraging, but one question remained: Could I use my corny concoction in a pumpkin spice latte, aka the “PSL?” I took a trip to Starbucks and paid five bucks for the smallest cup they had. I didn’t taste any coffee, only pumpkin pie, but the barista claimed she’d added a shot.

I took it home and added homemade espresso, which made it taste kind of funny, in a way that pumpkin sometimes can.

The corn spice latte (CSL), meanwhile, had none of that funniness, no matter how much coffee I added. And I added plenty. And when I added chocolate powder to the corn-coction, the resulting corn spice mocha (CSM) made me smile like a jack-o-lantern.

The following recipe is for a thick beverage that tastes like pumpkin pie. It includes a chocolate option – because who doesn’t like chocolate pumpkin pie? Both Corn Spice and Chocolate Corn Spice go well with coffee

– better than pumpkin, if you ask me – and don’t require added sugar or milk, as corn is sweet and creamy. But if you want Starbucks-level decadence in your Corn Spice Latte or Mocha, add more sweetener and creamer.

For expediency, I use a commercial pumpkin pie spice mix. Not only is it pre-mixed, it is ground much finer than what I can do at home. But extreme-DIYers can mix up their own using 3 teaspoons each of cloves and allspice, 4 teaspoons each of nutmeg and ginger, and 6 tablespoons cinnamon, all ground.

Corn Spice Porridge Makes 2 servings 2 ears sweet corn, shucked (or 2 cups frozen corn) 2 cups water ¼ teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons pumpkin spices Optional: 1 tablespoon cocoa powder Optional: maple syrup for extra sweetness For corn spice latte or mocha: ¼ cup (or more) heavy cream, 2 tablespoons (or more) sugar Cut off the tip of the cob and hold it tip down on a cutting board. Place a filet knife or the narrowest knife you can find about halfway down the cob, and cut straight down, as close to the cob as possible, slicing off a sheet of kernels. Rotate your grip on the cob and slice off another sheet. When you have sliced the corn off the entire half, put the other end down on the cutting board and slice the corn off the other end. You should get about a cup and a half from an average size ear.

Add the corn, along with the salt, spices and chocolate, if using, to a pot with the water. On medium heat, stir together with a fork and simmer for 5 minutes, covered. Turn off heat and allow to cool. When cool enough to work with, add to a blender, preferably a powerful one like a Vitamix. Start on the lowest speed, gradually increasing the speed to high, and blend at high until it’s utterly smooth.

If you are in need of a blender upgrade, you may have to filter what’s left. Otherwise you will end up with corn pieces in your teeth and a very unpleasing CSL. Pour the liquefied or strained corn spices back into the pot and return to a simmer. Serve hot or cold, with a shot of espresso for that extra kick. n

Dear Rachel, What’s up with all these American TV shows and programs with their full names being reduced to acronyms? “Good Morning America” is now “GMA.” “America’s Funniest Videos” is “AFV.” “America’s Got Talent” is “AGT.” Even Weight Watchers is now WW (which actually has more syllables than the full name, so it takes longer to say it). Is this yet another reflection of the “dumbing-down” of American culture? WTF? -YLR (your loyal reader) Dear MLR, If you ask me, this fine American tradition goes all the way back to FDR. It was the 1930s, and people were talking fast, and we just didn’t have time for all those syllables in Delano. Plus, everyone wanted to say “Delanor,” because of “Eleanor.” Or maybe that’s just me. by Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19): We’re in the equinoctial season. During this pregnant pause, the sun seems to hover directly over the equator; the lengths of night and day are equal. For all of us, but especially for you, it’s a favorable phase to conjure and cultivate more sweet symmetry, calming balance and healing harmony. In that spirit, I encourage you to temporarily suspend any rough, tough approaches you might have in regard to those themes. Resist the temptation to slam two opposites together simply to see what happens. Avoid engaging in the pseudo-fun of purging by day and bingeing by night. And don’t you dare get swept up in hating what you love or loving what you hate.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “I tell you what freedom is to me: no fear.” So said singer and activist Nina Simone. But it’s doubtful there ever came a time when she reached the perfect embodiment of that idyllic state.

How can any of us empty out our anxiety so completely as to be utterly emancipated? It’s not possible. That’s the bad news, Taurus. The good news is that in the coming weeks you will have the potential to be as unafraid as you have ever been. For best results, try to ensure that love is your primary motivation in everything you do and say and think.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Some things don’t change much. The beautiful marine animal species known as the pearly nautilus, which lives in the South Pacific, is mostly the same as it was 150 million years ago. Then there’s Fuggerei, a walled enclave within the German city of Augsburg. The rent is cheap, about $1 per year, and that fee hasn’t increased in almost 500 years.

While I am in awe of these bastions of stability and wish we had more such symbolic anchors, I advise you to head in a different direction. During the coming weeks, you’ll be wise to be a maestro of mutability, a connoisseur of transformation, an adept of novelty.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Granny Smith apples are widely available. But before 1868, the tart, crispy, juicy fruit never existed on planet Earth. Around that time, an Australian mother of eight named Maria Ann Smith threw the cores of French crab apples out her window while she was cooking. The seeds were fertilized by the pollen from a different, unknown variety of apple, and a new type was born: Granny Smith. I foresee the possibility of a metaphorically comparable event in your future: a lucky accident that enables you to weave together two interesting threads into a fascinating third thread.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “Every masterpiece is just dirt and ash put together in some perfect way,” writes storyteller Chuck Palahniuk, who has completed several novelistic masterpieces.

According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you Leos have assembled much of the dirt and ash necessary to create your next masterpiece and are now ready to move on to the next phase. And what is that phase? Identifying the help and support you’ll need for the rest of the process.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In 1959, scandal erupted among Americans who loved to eat peanut butter. Studies revealed that manufacturers had added so much hydrogenated vegetable oil and glycerin to their product that only 75 percent of it could truly be called peanut butter. So began a long legal process to restore high standards. Finally there was a new law specifying that no company could sell a product called “peanut butter” unless it contained at least 90 percent peanuts. I hope this fight for purity inspires you to conduct a metaphorically comparable campaign. It’s time to ensure that all the important resources and influences in your life are at peak intensity and efficiency. Say NO to dilution and adulteration.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In 1936, the city of Cleveland staged the Great Lakes Exposition, a 135-acre fair with thrill rides, art galleries, gardens and sideshows. One of its fun features was The Golden Book of Cleveland, a 2.5-ton, 6,000-page text the size of a mattress. After the expo closed down, the “biggest book in the world” went missing. If it still exists today, no one knows where it is. I’m going to speculate that there’s a metaphorical version of The Golden Book of Cleveland in your life. You, too, have lost track of a major Something that would seem hard to misplace. Here’s the good news: If you intensify your search now, I bet you’ll find it before the end of 2019.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In 1990, the New Zealand government appointed educator, magician and comedian Ian Brackenbury Channell to be the official Wizard of New Zealand. His jobs include protecting the government, blessing new enterprises, casting out evil spirits, upsetting fanatics and cheering people up. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to find your personal equivalents of an inspirational force like that.

There’s really no need to scrimp. According to my reading of the cosmic energies, you have license to be extravagant in getting what you need to thrive.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): “Do silly things,” advised playwright Anton Chekhov. “Foolishness is a great deal more vital and

healthy than our straining and striving after a meaningful life.” I think that’s a perspective worth adopting now and then.

Most of us go through phases when we take things too seriously and too personally and too literally. Bouts of fun absurdity can be healing agents for that affliction. But now is NOT one of those times for you, in my opinion. Just the reverse is true, in fact. I encourage you to cultivate majestic moods and seek out awe-inspiring experiences and induce sublime perspectives. Your serious and noble quest for a meaningful life can be especially rewarding in the coming weeks.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Before comedian Jack Benny died in 1974, he arranged to have a florist deliver a single red rose to his wife every day for the rest of her life. She lived another nine years and received more than 3,000 of these gifts. Even though you’ll be around on this Earth for a long time, I think the coming weeks would be an excellent time to establish a comparable custom: a commitment to providing regular blessings to a person or persons for whom you care deeply. This bold decision would be in alignment with astrological omens, which suggest that you can generate substantial benefits for yourself by being creative with your generosity.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Actress and author Ruby Dee formulated an unusual prayer. “God,” she wrote, “make me so uncomfortable that I will do the very thing I fear.” As you might imagine, she was a brave activist who risked her reputation and career working for the Civil Rights Movement and other idealistic causes. I think her exceptional request to a Higher Power makes good sense for you right now. You’re in a phase when you can generate practical blessings by doing the very things that intimidate you or make you nervous. And maybe the best way to motivate and mobilize yourself is by getting at least a bit flustered or unsettled.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Syndicated cartoon strip “Calvin and Hobbes” appeared for 10 years in 2,400 newspapers in 50 countries. It wielded a sizable cultural influence. For example, in 1992, six-year-old Calvin decided “The Big Bang” was a boring term for how the universe began and instead proposed we call it the “Horrendous Space Kablooie.” A number of real scientists subsequently adopted Calvin’s innovation, and it has been invoked playfully but seriously in university courses and textbooks.

In that spirit, I encourage you to give fun new names to anything and everything you feel like spicing up. You now have substantial power to reshape and revamp the components of your world. It’s Identity-Shifting Time.

Let’s Talk Trash!

With their fall feeding frenzy in high gear and bear activity picking up, here are a few trash-related reminders for area residents and businesses. City and county residents are reminded to report instances of bears accessing trash. The City of Durango and La Plata County have ordinances meant to reduce the amount of trash available to bears, and both require residents to report violations to be effective. City residents should call City Code Enforcement at 375-4930. County residents should call Central Dispatch at 3852900. Residents and businesses should contact their waste hauler if their bear-resistant trash container or dumpster is damaged as to no longer be bear-resistant and in need of repair or replacement. If the container was provided by the City of Durango, you can call 375-5004. Otherwise, contact your waste hauler. All bearresistant trash containers and dumpsters

are only bear-resistant when used properly and can be damaged by bears when not latched. Containers should not be overfilled and lids should be fully closed and latched at all times, unless the container needs to be unlatched on the morning of collection only. Other tips for keeping bears out of your trash, and thus helping make our community safe for both residents and bears, can be found at bears martdurango.org.

Board Training Series in October, November The Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado has opened registration for two comprehensive training series on nonprofit board best practices; one training series is for board members, and one training series is for staff. For board members, the three-part training series is scheduled for Oct. 9, 23 and Nov. 6 from 4-6 p.m. Attendees will review topics such as board expectations and rigor, board evaluation, board relationships, productive meetings and quality decision-making. Registration for the full series is $60.
