When it comes to Halloween candy, Coloradoans really like to Nerd out. According to a recent survey on Halloween candy preferences, the brightly colored sugary nuggets ranked first among state residents on ways to satisfy their sweet tooths (and horrify their dentists.)

Always the renegade state, Colorado bucked the national trend, which put Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups at the top of the pile (incidentally, Nerds ranked near the bottom of the national pillow case, along with Airheads, SweeTarts, and Gummy Worms.) But Reese’s isn’t the most popular in big cities – that honor goes to M&Ms, which are the ghoulish favorites in New York, San Antonio, San Diego, Fort Worth and Columbus.

The study, which was done by Bid on Equipment (a used machinery bidding site – go figure) was based on Google search volume in each state as well as the country’s 20 largest cities from September 2018 - October 2019.

A phone survey was also taken this fall of 2,004 people living in residential neighborhoods.

Other tasty findings include: • People with children spend an average $35 on Halloween candy • 48 percent of Americans support moving Halloween to the last Saturday in October • The ideal hours for trick-or-treating are between 6-9 p.m.

• Children age out of trick-or-treating at age 15 • Three out of four respondents say they choose to stay home to hand out candy.

And if you don’t like Nerds? Take a drive south of the border, where Reese’s still reign supreme or west where Peanut Butter M&Ms fill the bucket.

Skiers – start your engines. Right on cue, Wolf Creek is slated for its traditional Halloween opening this year. Today (Oct. 31) Wolfie is opening its Nova and Magic Carpet lifts from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for your early season shredding pleasure.

Lift tickets are $31 or a whopping $6 for kids 5 and younger.

To add to the “spooktacular” fun, Wolf Creek is also featuring a haunted house, which will be accessible via the Lynx Lift until dusk.

Grooming crews have been working feverishly to buff out the 17 inches the ski area has received so far this season, including 5 from the most recent storm. After Thursday’s opening, Wolf Creek will revert to a weekends-only schedule until Mother Nature returns with more of the goods.

LaVidaLocal Please don’t be my neighbor Make no mistake: in the game of dodgeball that is life, we must all choose sides. On one team are the Mr. Rogerses who believe in warmth, kindness, cardigans, generosity, make-believe, empathy and neighborliness.

On the other are the Tim “The Tool Man” Taylorses from “Home Improvement,” who believe in power equipment, fences and never meeting their neighbors face to face even after eight broadcast seasons.

I have no doubt in my mind that the best decision here is to vacate the gym and run far, far away from the game of dodgeball that is life. So I did just that. I now live outside of anyplace one might call “town,” where I seldom have the chance to be neighborly, and I’m not getting drawn into any dodgeball matches. Because let’s face it: Mr. Rogers is probably the only human who would choose me for his dodgeball team.

But even out here, where “neighbor” means “the nearest human settler,” I cannot avoid people altogether.

Namely, I cannot avoid Jerry.

Jerry – whose name I have changed to protect the innocent, which is me – never learned from any PBS show as a child. I have filled my truck three times with the garbage that Jerry dumped around the house before I moved in. I know this garbage is Jerry’s, because Jerry’s garbage included Jerry’s mail. I also know which flavor of ice cream Jerry prefers, how his daughter is doing in algebra, and the viscosity of Jerry’s motor oil.

And I know that Jerry is in fact my neighbor, because he ran me off our dirt road to interrogate me. He rolled down his window and demanded to know my name, my business and the last four of my social.

With good ol’ Freddie R. on my shoulder, I smiled and said, “And who are you, neighbor?”

“I’m Jerry,” he said, thus allowing me to deduce his relationship to the truckloads of garbage. I almost said something about that misdemeanor, but I didn’t, because his truck is compensating WAY more than mine is, and he clearly plays for the more ruthless dodgeball team.

Jerry’s presence pervades the ‘hood. One of his dogs bum-rushes my truck every time I trek to town for supplies, to the point where I really should invest in plastic seat covers. And a juvenile male in Jerry’s house-

hold goes screaming through the corner of my land in his Chevrolet Jalopy on the regular, eroding a natural waterway and also making me shout, without irony, to get off my lawn.

That said, Jerry has stopped disposing of his waste around my house. I’m certain he’s now dumping on someone else’s uninhabited land, but not mine. Perhaps we could learn to be neighborly. I would knock on his door to find out, but I’m not certain his dogs won’t eat me.

Last week, Jerry ran me off the shoulder again. He’d loaded his truck down with intact tree segments as wide as my arm is long. I would have required a backhoe to move any one of them.

He didn’t remember me, so I told him my mother’s maiden name and the street I grew up on. Then, to foster amiability until he cleared the roadway, I made some innocuous comment about the permitting process for collecting firewood.

“Forest is public land,” Jerry said. “Can’t stop me from using it.”

Goodness knows wildland preservation never stopped the Forest Service from building another road – and I hate senseless rules, when they’re actually senseless – but I flared up at that. That’s not how public lands work! They’re not yours! They’re ours! That tree you cut down is my tree too!

But I didn’t. I said, “Oh,” and the little Mr. Rogers on my shoulder stayed hush. I lit a sage stick when I got home and smudged the ever-loving crap out of the Jerry-ward side of my home, and then I beat myself up for saying nada.

The truth is, I feared retribution. I mean, this man has chainsaws hanging over the entrance to his land. He doesn’t give two raccoon scats about personal boundaries, and he’s transferring these attitudes to the next generation of children and dogs. If we came to blows over firewood collection, it’s my word against his out here, and in this game of dodgeball, only one of us would be left standing to speak.

How can I pipe up for what I know to be right in the face of indifferent might? (Which you know is a deep question because it rhymes.)

The answer I’ve come to? Play a different game.

Mr. Rogers didn’t change the world by getting good at dodgeball. He reimagined the game. I have zero power to change Jerry’s ways. And I don’t need to make him cookies or invite him to Thanksgiving. But I can be a good neighbor to him – picking up what trash blows across the road and not running over his dog. And when someday he finds himself in a bind and comes calling, I know just which ice cream will make him feel better.

Don’t walk back bridge project To the editor, I am writing in response to Catherine Boyle’s letter (“Using pedestrian funds wisely,” Oct. 24) that only partially described the scope of the 32nd Street Bridge project and pits it against another need to improve safety on the Holly to CR 250 section of 32nd Street.

Ms. Boyle accurately described the plan for a pedestrian bridge “south of the current bridge and its two sidewalks,” but did not mention that this project also includes a second contiguous pedestrian bridge to cross 32nd Street, thus connecting the Animas River Trail (ART) on the east side (south of 32nd) with the ART on the west side (north of 32nd), thus fulfilling the ART’s long-term vision for no at-grade crossings the full length of the trail.

disabilities, dogs and kids – is the only way to 100 percent ensure the safety of ART users.

Ms. Boyle accurately stated, “this road is far more heavily used than ever.” Indeed, in a March 2019 engineering report, it was identified as the second busiest street in Durango with an average daily traffic (ADT) count of 10,742 (5,479 eastbound and 5,263 westbound vehicles), second only to College Drive (12,241ADT) and busier than Florida Road (10,604 ADT).

There is a clear need for pedestrian and bicycle safety the extent of 32nd Street from North Main to CR 250, but one decades long-planned project with dedicated salestax funding should not be scrapped to fund another. That would be a false dichotomy since improving the Holly to CR 250 section is not currently something the city can do anything about since the land is largely in the county.

As Ms. Boyle urges, the limited funding we have should be used wisely. In this case, that would be demonstrated by City Council putting public safety first and fulfilling the wishes of its constituents by budgeting for the (two) bridges as they simultaneously work with the county to begin planning for improvements to the other end of 32nd street.

‘Others will save the Earth’ To the editor, Are you clear that climate change is the biggest threat humankind has ever faced? If not, please find out soon. If you are clear, commit now to be personally active in the climate movement.

Only our personal investment can protect the world we love.

Durango can and should be the leader in the Four Corners in embracing renewable energy, conservation and sustainable living. But during the last decade, our progress lagged far behind that of comparable Colorado cities and towns. For a variety of reasons (and despite commendable efforts by some), Durango has not nearly fulfilled the very basic goals of its own 2015 Sustainability Action Plan, nor of earlier similar documents. We need to face the fact that our city has fallen woefully short in addressing the existential threat we all face: climate change.

So whom shall we blame? Who will make climate progress happen here in Durango? There’s only one meaningful answer: I am responsible.

Consider the sign held by a local climate protestor saying “The greatest danger to our planet is the belief that others will save it.” We have been busy working hard and caring for our families, so it’s understandable that we rarely engage with our local government. We leave it to them to figure out priorities. We rarely contact Durango’s City Council, hardly ever show up at a council meeting – we already have plenty on our plate.

But to make progress on the existential threat that faces us, each of us must get personally involved. Are you ready?

We need to first thank our current City Council. On Aug. 20, it passed a climate resolution containing both renewable energy and carbon reduction goals communitywide. Our Council also called for “performance contracting” to upgrade many of our municipal buildings to cheaper, clean solar electricity at no cost to the city.

This is the kind of forward progress we need throughout our city – a smart, solid start.

But the Council’s proposed 2020 city budget falls short on climate action, offering only a small, one-year “opportunity fund.” The Council needs input from each of us, for reasons listed below.

Spend one evening showing up for your climate. Join us at the City Council meeting Tues., Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. (949 E. 2nd Ave.) to show your support for these vital issues: 1) A new Durango City Manager whose resume reflects true commitment to aggressive progress on climate action. Our previous manager retired, leaving us the opportunity to hand-pick the individual central to our city’s functioning. We need a climate champion, well versed on energy and/or environmental matters, able to navigate and accelerate our future complex path to carbon reduction and renewable energy.

2) A climate advisory board with meaningful input into City sustainability plans and decisions. This group should be composed primarily of consultant stakeholders able to provide pertinent expertise, funded for compensation. Given Durango’s past culture of sustainability disregard (for which we cannot blame our current Council), concerned residents must now ensure a municipal process that creates results. We owe our children our serious, committed vigilance and involvement.

3) A dedicated funding stream for climate action.

Solid annual funding can come from several sources, including (in rough numbers): the $1 million generated by the LPEA Franchise Agreement; $3 million from the General Fund usually committed to Parks and Rec (which also has a yearly $8.8 million dedicated funding stream); or new revenue. Currently only $50,000 appears to be committed to actual sustainability work in 2020, a very weak start toward our new 2030 climate goals.

4) A transparent, well-publicized process of climate action efforts by the city. Every resident should be able to quickly locate in one comprehensive data source the city’s: climate progress; accountability for how sustainability funds are spent by each department; and a detailed City goals timeline. Currently, such data is tucked away in multiple places in the maze-like city website, deterring resident involvement.

To the editor, As the summer recreation season comes to an end, San Juan Trail Riders would like to extend a thank you to all user groups who enjoyed the Hermosa drainage this summer. Throughout the season, we enjoyed embracing the multi-user cooperation in the continuous collaboration to keep these trails clear. It is our hope that we can foster this relationship between user groups in the future and collectively enjoy this unique recreational opportunity.

Taking money from parks, streets

To the editor, Although it would be wonderful if the City of Durango could open the library on Sundays, the proposed method of financing the extended hours should be concerning to citizens and city employees.

The three mayors preceding the current mayor described the alleged grim financial future of the city. We were told tax revenues were rapidly declining. What changed that allows the city to fund eight new employees and substantial raises next year?

The answer is that the former city manager and former finance director devised a scheme to use both the dedicated open space tax and dedicated streets tax to fund this multi-million-dollar enlargement to the budget. Voters were clear that these two taxes were to only be used for open space, parks and streets, yet city staff is snubbing their noses at us.

The most recent of these elections was in April. Those promoting the tax for streets did not disclose the scheme to move money from streets to pay for more staff in other departments and then to use the new tax money to supplant what was moved away from streets. The city hired a clever attorney to write the ballot language that allows the city to use the dedicated taxes to unsustainably expand other departments. For example, both assistant city managers could receive a salary of $192,549.

These two dedicated taxes will expire and the poor management of the taxes will make renewal of the taxes difficult. Once the taxes sunset, city employees will lose their jobs.

Help the councilors find a sustainable method to fund the library and salary increases. Compliment them for taking the time to find a solution, rather than vilify them for not rubber-stamping a plan developed by a troubled staff. The decision to open the library and give raises can be discussed in 2020 once a city manager and finance director are brought in from the outside.

Now, the recognition is official: the Durango City Council will designate November as Durango Theater Month, in honor of the many productions taking place in the next few weeks.

“If someone goes to see another show, that energy starts spreading,” Carson said. “That means in the future, more theaters, more shows, more people will continue to go. By seeing any of our shows, that energy will continue to spread. And that benefits all of us.”

So in that spirit, let’s take a look at the marquee for Durango Theater Month, which begins in earnest Fri., Nov. 8.

“Gypsy,” FLC Theater Department

rango community. In addition to college actors, the 34-person cast features 14 children, six adult community members, and FLC staff and alumni.

Having such an inclusive cast makes this production particularly special for Carson. The FLC Theater Department strives to stage such community-centric productions periodically and having this one align with Theater Month just adds icing to the cake.

Plus, theater buffs may know that the role of Mama Rose, the iconic “stage mother,” was once played by Angela Lansbury – who will have a special message for attendees of the Gypsy Gala, the Theater Department’s fundraising event Mon., Nov. 11.

The 1959 play set in the burlesque world of the ’20s and ’30s is often recognized as the greatest American musical. Based very loosely on the “Every Brilliant Thing,” memoirs of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Merely Players Lee, the production features such nowIf there’s an antithesis to the ensemble standard numbers as “Everything’s numbers of “Gypsy,” this is it: playwright Coming Up Roses.”

“The joy of this play is that it’s witty and fun and unexpected and very real,” said Wood-Patterson. “It’s about a woman who, when she’s 7 years old, her mother attempts suicide. And then her mother does that several times over her life. So to deal with it, this child begins to make a list of everything that’s wonderful in the world.”

A joyful play about suicide – yes, it’s true. The play is filled with hope, Wood-Patterson says, and she and Syverson are taking the opportunity to promote suicide awareness, especially considering that the suicide rate in La Plata County is double the national rate.

Mental health counselor Janet Curry will be on hand after every performance for talkbacks, should anybody wish to discuss the topic of suicide further, and she is also a liaison to numerous mental health organizations and crisis lines.

“This one is just right for our community at this time,” Wood-Patterson said. “It’s an exquisite piece of theater.”

Swinging the pendulum in a different direction, Durango High School Troupe 1096 is producing the stage version of “The Little Mermaid,” the Disney Renaissance story of Ariel’s deal with the devil – ditching her tail and voice for land legs and a shot at Prince Eric.

The plays at DHS are chosen by a board of seniors and director Ben Mattson, and they did not know about the forthcoming Disney live action film when they chose this play. “We seem to be on the cusp of that movement,” Mattson said. “We wanted to do something that played to a wide audience and that families could come to enjoy.”

The story is likely familiar to many theatergoers already, but the stage production takes the time to add depth to the characters and their relationships. Ursula the sea witch’s backstory is more flushed out, for example, and the relationship between Ariel and her father emphasizes the merdad’s struggle to understand that he must let go so his daughter can be happy.

Mattson said that he has an ambitious group of seniors on stage this fall, as well as underclassmen with fire and drive, so he feels confident in his troupe’s ambitious production. “We’re all pretty exhausted,” he said, “but really excited, too.”

With options like these, casual theatergoers and seasoned theater buffs can only choose right. One play or three? Whatever they choose, they’ll be contributing to the universal yet one-of-a-kind experience of sharing in a live

performance with their wider community.

“It’s becoming rarer that people agree to sit in the same space,” Mattson said. “There’s something magical about it. Some people say that theater is on its way out with all these advancements in how people get entertainment. But I don’t think it will ever go away. People will always want to be in the same room at the same time. It builds something that nothing else can really do in the same way.” n

Silence of the favas Forget Hannibal – these underrated giant legumes are nothing to fear

I

’m gliding through the Durango Farmers Market, dodging all the double-wide baby strollers, with my eyes peeled for aged black garlic, oxheart carrots, huitlache or corn smut (corn cob fungus aka Mexican truffles), Amarosa fingerlings, French Quarter pink hybrid okra, Kennebec potatoes and Redarlin Brussels sprouts (reddish purple and slightly sweeter than the green variety).

No luck. I settle on a small bag of Red German garlic for $7. The October sun has a gloss to it, a glare that makes it kind of hard to see in the shade. I blink twice. But without a doubt, in a small wicker basket, I spy whole fresh fava beans. All over the world, this ancient legume is a savory symbol of spring. It’s a cool weather veggie. Hates the heat. But here it is autumn, and behold! The broad bean!

I dash to the young farmer selling them, and just assume he’s got a bushel hidden beneath the table. I ask for 3 pounds.

“Sorry but that’s it,” he says.

“You’re kidding, right?”

“Have you noticed the time? It’s noon!

You’re late to the market. I’ll have more next week.”

“OK.” I quickly purchase the half-pound or so that’s left.

Hail Lord Fava! I can already taste the fresh, nutty flavor, the smooth, buttery texture. Roasted whole with the German garlic, good olive oil and British salt? It’s all a match made in heaven. I eat every bit of them, to the dismay of my husband, who doesn’t even like vegetables.

“Don’t worry,” I tell him. “There will be plenty more next week.”

A species of the flowering plant in the vetch and pea family Fabaceae, vicia faba is the scientific name for the fava bean. Similar to the garden pea, lentil and chickpea, the fava originated in the Mediterranean and southwestern Asia. It seems to have been discovered as far back as the Neolithic period (6,800 – 6,500 B.C.E) from Israel. It became a common food for many Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations, its use eventually spreading along

the Nile to Ethiopia, northern India and China.

In this country they get a bad rap because you have to peel them twice to get to the bean. (Americans don’t like that.) Which is too bad because favas carry some amazing health benefits – from supporting the immune

system and preventing osteoporosis to aiding in heart health and energy levels.

Also known as English beans, broad beans, mojo beans, horse beans, Windsor beans, faba beans, pigeon beans, tic(k) beans, field beans and bell beans, 4

vicia fabas are not only extremely tasty, they are the nutritional all-stars of the legume world. An excellent source of plant protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals, they’re especially high in folate, manganese and iron and provide healthy amounts of thiamine, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, zinc and potassium. Favas are also rich in L-dopa, a substance used to treat Parkinson’s disease. And some use fava beans as a natural alternative to viagra, citing a link between L-dopa production and the human libido.

Adversely, there’s evidence that those with a certain inherited syndrome (glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency) can develop a potentially fatal anemic reaction to favas. (This trait occurs in people mostly of Mediterranean heritage and in Iran and China.)

Another fun fact about favas is that they contain a lot of tyramine, and thus should be avoided by those taking MAOI inhibitors, which are anti-depressants. In the infamous scene in “Silence of the Lambs,” bored with his census taker, Dr. Hannibal Lecter boasts that he ate a man’s liver “with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.” As a psychiatrist, he must have known the three “forbidden foods” for patients taking MAOI inhibitors: liver, favas and wine.

Was the doctor inferring that he’d gone off his meds?

Who knows?

As with all ancient foods, favas are waist high in folklore.

In ancient Greece, they were used as food for the dead at spring festivals. It was thought that planting them on Good Friday or during the night brought good luck. It was also believed that dreaming of fava beans was a sign of impending conflict; conversely some believed that eating them caused bad dreams. Some cultures used fava beans as a medium for divination, casting them on the ground to interpret the pattern they formed. In Sicily, the fava has special significance because, in the distant past, there was a famine in which all crops failed except fava beans, which saved the population from starvation. In gratitude, thanks were offered up to St. Joseph, which is why favas appear on Sicilian church altars on St. Joseph’s Day. In Rome, on May

1, families traditionally picnic on fresh fava beans with Pecorino Romano during excursions to the Campagna. But up in northern Italy, fava beans have traditionally been fed only to animals; some elders still frown upon human consumption.

Not me. It’s a week later, and I’m back at the Farmer’s Market for the last crop of the Mancos favas. I have a large eco-friendly bag ready to haul them home. It’s 10 o’clock.

A lovely morning. I see the sign that says Green Table Farm, and there in the same brown wicker basket are a handful of the beans.

“This can’t be all,” I whimper.

“Sorry. The frost got them. That’s it for the season.”

“Rats.”

Turns out the farmer, Tyler Hoyt, lives in Mancos, where it’s “so cold I can grow favas through the heat of the summer.”

He planted them in May and June.

To his credit, Hoyt – a native of Boise and a former history major at the Fort, with a master’s degree in agro-ecology – never mentions that he’s the president of the Durango Farmers Market Board (at the tender age of 33).

He sells 100 different varieties of about 30 vegetables including some crazy looking carrots and radishes. But it’s the favas that need constant explaining, he says.

“I try to educate people on how use and eat them, beyond the movie reference.”

He’s a lobbyist for Conservation Colorado, advocating on air quality issues, and water funneling.

“People on the Western Slope don’t want to see their water diverted to the Eastern Slope.”

There’s also the problem of methane pollution due to oil and gas drilling in the region. “We have some of the worst air quality in the country, on par with inner-city L.A.” But I’m hungry and my passion, my fava fever, outstrips his compassion for the Methane Capture Law this morning.

Is that wrong? Yes. But I don’t want to be right. Until next year (dear, Tyler) I’ll go for the dried ones at Albertson’s. n

Going back some day: The unsung career of Linda Ronstadt What: “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice” When: 3 & 5:30 p.m. most days through Nov. 14 Where: Animas City Theatre, 128 E College Dr. Perhaps one of the most forgotten musical stars of the ’70s and ’80s, Mexican-American singer Linda Ronstadt gets her due with a new biographical film on her life, “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.”

Recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which in the ultimate cruel irony took the multi-platinum singer’s voice, the film takes a look back at the woman that Time magazine once called “the queen of torchy rock.” One of the most versatile singers of the 20th century, Ronstadt was also one of the most successful, putting out six back-toback platinum albums (and 12 total.)

The film, directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (of “The Celluloid Closet” and “Lovelace” fame) takes a look at the woman behind the music as well as the collective memory lapse that affects even those who grew up with Ronstadt’s music. With interviews from her contemporaries such as Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne, as well as narration from Ronstadt herself, the film makes the case for Ronstadt’s underrated status. The documentary also reveals that Ronstadt was not without her critics.

It notes that her ‘70s covers were often so polished they erased what made the original songs they came to overshadow distinctive, something Ronstadt herself does not dispute.

Nevertheless, at the height of her popularity, which included highlypublicized romances with California Gov. Jerry Brown and “Star Wars” Director George Lucas – Ronstadt, a restless and adventurous artist, turned away from pop music. She went on to explore an astonishing variety of styles, from American standards to country to opera before circling back to her traditional Mexican canciones. Throught it all, and with constant pressure from a risk-averse industry, Ronstadt insisted on following her instincts.

Today, her magnificent singing voice may be silenced, but this film, which earned a 99 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, ensures it won’t be lost to history. It captures the life and career of a rock ‘n’ roll star who never looked back, never apologized, never compromised, virtually never made a wrong move, and made it all seem effortless.

As Rolling Stone put it, the film will “make you fall in love with her all over again.”
