Lummi-naries “The Red Road to D.C.” is winding through Durango. Next week, the Lummi Nation, of Washington State, will be stopping through town with its 24-foot totem pole en route from the West Coast Washington to the East Coast one.

The cross-country tour is meant to highlight Indigenous-led efforts to protect sacred lands, waters and wildlife that are imperiled by dams, extractive industries and climate change. The tour is stopping at sacred and cultural places along the way in an effort to honor, unite and empower communities. Upon arrival in D.C., the totem pole will be gifted to the White House and Congress.

Great Old Broads for Wilderness will be hosting the tour at Fort Lewis College from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tues., June 29. The public is invited to attend and learn more about the Lummi Nation and how it is seeking to raise awareness of Indigenous issues and the need for all people to protect sacred places and the environment.

LaVidaLocal Ode to a dead punk rocker One evening in 2019 in the cozy performance space of Paste Studios, in New York City, Jack Terricloth looked into the camera with a devilish grin and, as a preface to the band’s next song, suavely said, “Everyone has a favorite dead punk rocker.

I hope to be yours one day.” The members of his band, The World/Inferno Friendship Society, shook their heads in laughter and then launched into a cathartic Latin jazz-inspired track about the beatnik punk iconoclast, Jeffrey Lee Pierce.

There is now a bittersweet sting in my chest when I re-watch that footage. Because in May, a few days before my birthday and a month before his 51st celebration, Terricloth (real name Peter Ventantonio) took his last breath and left this spinning globe of madness and wonder.

Before more grim headlines pile up on the doorstep, before the party ends, I want to honor and celebrate Terricloth’s legacy – a man whose art, music and ideas have held my heart since youth. The man had such an enigmatic presence that was nearly mythical and cinematic, and it wasn’t just due to his Jack Skellington frame and vocality.

If you’ve ever wondered what an anarchist punk rock cabaret collective would sound like, look no further than The World/Inferno Friendship Society, which Terricloth spearheaded since 1996. The band’s a carnival-esque collective with a carousel of nearly 40 musicians that have collaborated, toured and recorded together in different lineups over the decades. The band’s music breaks down the borders between genres, zigzagging from punk and klezmer, to jazz, opera and soul – oftentimes even in the span of one three-minute song. In every epoch of the band, Terricloth’s electric passions and ideals run rampant through the music and lyrics.

Consider the group’s early full-length album, “The True Story of the Bridgewater Astral League,” which is a hyperkinetic musical story of a group of kids hijacking cars in Bridgewater, N.J., and then selling the cars to Russian mobsters. To accomplish such successful carjackings, the kids credit the use of astral projection. Supposedly this is a true story. Maybe you had to be there at the time.

The illustrator Scott Benson recently created a web comic about the Bridgewater Astral League, in honor of The World/Inferno and Terricloth. In the comic’s introduction, Benson reflects on the record, describing it as a concept album about “teen weirdos” with superpowers and the dangerous recklessness that would ensue, resulting in “their first big heartbreak” in failure and regret. Benson goes on to write, “And as I’m a couple decades removed now from being a teen, that ability to survive the big heartbreaks is something that never becomes less important.”

All throughout the band’s career, its music has celebrated the underdogs, outlaws and oddball outsiders, from Paul Robeson to Peter Lorre – the latter of which the band wrote a whole album about in 2007. Titled “Addicted to Bad Ideas: Peter Lorre’s Twentieth Century,” the album’s 11 tracks archive the actor’s life and career,

from leaving Weimar, Germany, as Hitler took power to Lorre’s many memorable performances as various misfits during the Golden Age of Hollywood. When reflecting on Lorre in an interview, Terricloth described him as “a strangely charismatic, extremely creepy person, which I think most punk rockers can identify with,” thereby immortalizing Lorre into the annals of punk rock history.

Along with raising glasses to the misfits and marauders, the band knew when to dance in anarchic joy and when to stomp on the threat of fascism. And that’s what attracted me to the band when I encountered their music as a teen growing up on the Navajo Nation. They added an eclectic sort of fuel to my diet of Noam Chomsky and discordant punk rock. After discovering World/Inferno, what I found refreshing and liberating was not just the explicit desire to confront and smash everything horrible about our current world. There was also an adoring expression in picking up the pieces of history and pop culture schmaltz that they love and holding them up to the light; to sing about the fleeting moments of subversive joy found within.

When Terricloth was on stage, he was often dressed to the nines with a ringmaster aura to his presence, and the same can be said for the many bandmates he shared the stage with.

Before the band would play, the audience would already be immersed in the carnival theatrics they would transform the venue into. (To see such manic beauty, look up any live footage for the “Addicted to Bad Ideas” album.) With Terricloth as the ringmaster, the rest of the band members acted as trapeze artists, lion tamers and fire-eaters except with guitars, saxophones and accordions, among other enchanting instruments.

In the context of this cabaret circus show, if you were lucky enough to be in attendance, you would find yourself singing and dancing to songs like, “Only Anarchists are Pretty,” “Let’s Steal Everything” and “Zen and the Art of Breaking Everything.” Along with those, the group has a vibrant catalog filled with many other songs espousing romantic anti-capitalist, anti-fascist ethics. Even on its final 2020 release, “All Borders are Porous to Cats,” Terricloth croons early on, “I have not a country. I am a citizen of jazz.” Such radical sentiments are why I, along with many others, found it instantly easy and comforting to give my heart away to The World/Inferno.

It’s belated, but in the spirit of collective solidarity, this is also a tribute to the many remarkable people we have lost in the last year who were larger than life – those we imagined a coffin couldn’t keep down. To lose such towering figures in life who had so much soul to share, it feels as if you woke up one morning to find the mountains missing.

So here’s to Jack, and everyone like him, gone too soon before the final curtain call. In his life, music and writing, he left behind a kingdom of heaven, and his heart’s a legend to shake the centuries.

Clearing the air D&SNG pivots from coal, moves toward cleaner future

T

he age of burning coal to fire up the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has come to an end.

Adapting to drought and heightened wildfire risk, this summer marks the first time in the D&SNG’s history where it will rely solely on oil-burning and diesel engines.

“It’s a new era,” Jeff Johnson, general manager of the D&SNG, said Monday. “Things change, but that’s part of progress.”

Throughout its 140-year history, the D&SNG has shoveled coal into its steam engines to power locomotives to Silverton and back, a 90-mile roundtrip gaining nearly 3,000 feet in elevation.

But in recent years, the D&SNG has received significant pushback from members of the community concerned about environmental impacts: namely the wildfire risk posed by coal-burning engines and the ensuing air pollution that has long vexed residents on the south side of town.

Over the years, the train has tried to improve the situation. To mitigate fire concerns, it has put significant resources in clearing vegetation along its tracks and even has its own fleet of pop cars and a helicopter to put out fires.

To help with the smoke, in the mid-2000s, the D&SNG installed scrubbers to reduce the ash emitted from running the engines at night.

The situation improved only slightly, however. For many, the train needed to transition from burning coal to a cleaner fuel, such as oil or diesel, which both emit less pollution and hold a lesser risk of starting a wildfire. But for years, D&SNG owner Al Harper maintained the train would never veer from tradition.

These calls for a cleaner future, however, were taken to new heights after the 416 Fire in 2018 burned more than 54,000 acres north of Durango, putting homes at risk, forcing evacuations and causing drastic economic losses. Just months after the fire, mudslides off the burn scar also damaged homes and caused a near total fish kill in the Animas River. From the outset, witnesses said the fire started just after a D&SNG locomotive passed by, and those suspicions were confirmed a year later when investigators pinned the blaze on the train.

Though the D&SNG denies it’s responsible, the fire forced Harper’s hand to rethink the train’s future. Ultimately, he vowed to never be shut down again by wildfire risk and committed to revamping his fleet with oil and diesel engines. And it appears the D&SNG has made good on its promise.

“I’m proud we were able to deliver on the timeline we planned,” Johnson said. “It’s an incredible stress reliever for all of us to have oil and diesel engines available.”

A fiery relationship It took just one year to carve and blast through the steep granite walls of the Animas River Canyon to complete the rail line from Durango to Silverton in 1882. Though its primary purpose was to serve as a lifeline to the hundreds of mines that pocked the San Juan Mountains around Silver-

Hollywood films featured the train in the 1950s and 1960s.

By the end of the century, the D&SNG had become Durango and Silverton’s top tourist draw. Today, in a normal year with full service, locomotives take nearly 200,000 4

people from Durango to the mountain town at an elevation of 9,318 feet. And while hard to pin down an exact number, best figures estimate the train has a $200 million impact on the local economy.

But the region’s relationship with the train hasn’t been without its complications.

And among the biggest concerns is wildfire risk – coal-fired engines are infamous for starting wildfires, a result of hot cinders emitted from smoke stacks. The U.S. Forest Service a few years ago released a report that said from 1994-2013, the D&SNG started nearly 20 fires on public lands, costing about $1.2 million in fire-fighting costs.

Ultimately, through legal battles, the D&SNG ended up paying only about half that amount.

For the 416 Fire, the Forest Service has sued the train to recover the $25 million or so it spent to put the fire out. It should be noted, however, the D&SNG is actively challenging the allegations in court. The trial was recently rescheduled for March 2022.

Regardless, the losses incurred from the 416 Fire, and the very real probability of future drought years, prompted the D&SNG to make a full-scale, $7 million push to convert some of its fleet to oil and diesel.

“We will never be shut down again for fires,” Harper said in 2018.

No coal, no problem So far this summer, the D&SNG has been running two converted oil-burning steam engines and another locomotive that runs on diesel. Later in the summer, if demand increases, a third converted oil-burn-

ing engine should be ready to roll.

Not a single fire has been reported this season, Johnson said, even as the region is in an extreme drought. The main reason is oil and diesel engines burn liquid, which vaporizes when ignited, rather than coal, a solid material that sends off embers when burned.

Part of the train’s hesitation all these years to transition to cleaner fuels was that it would lose riders drawn to the historical allure and nostalgia of burning coal. But that fear has proven unfounded.

“We rarely see anyone complain about it,” said D&SNG’s Johnson. “Most people understand the reason why we moved in the direction we have. And we’re generally filling every seat we can offer right now.”

Rob Arey, director of marketing for the Mount Washington COG Railway, said as the popular scenic railroad in New Hampshire went through a similar conversion, the same fears of losing ridership were brandished. But in the end, adding locomotives that run on biodiesel allowed for more daily trips, increasing visitation, while at the same time, having less environmental impact.

“Our railroad is built on innovation,” Arey said. “We may even see electric engines down the road.”

Most riders would be hard-pressed to even know the difference between a train running on coal or oil, Harper, too, has said previously. Both locomotives puff out steam, chug along the tracks and sound whistles through town. And above all, customers are still offered the same stunning

Johnson said coal-fired engines won’t be completely taken out of service, however. If conditions allow, and fire risk is low, it’s possible the D&SNG will fire them back up for some trips, likely during the shoulder seasons.

‘Major forces’ spark change For residents living near the train depot, the move to cleaner fuel is also being celebrated. Coal boilers need to stay hot and require engines to run all night, which causes a plume of smoke to cover parts of town. As a result, it’s not uncommon to wake up with red eyes and a sore throat, or for windows, laundry and even plants in the garden to turn black with a layer of soot.

The D&SNG in the mid-2000s invested more than $1 million to try to fix the issue, with little success, said Nathan Morris, who lives on the south side of Durango. All these years, Morris said the underlying hope was the train would convert to cleaner energy, but he held little optimism.

“I did not think it would happen this way,” he said. “It took a perfect storm of the 416 Fire, massive lawsuits, millions lost to the community, climate change – major forces.”

Morris and his neighbors set up an air quality monitor near Second Street and Fifth Avenue, which he said shows clear spikes to air quality in the mornings because of the train, even with oil and diesel engines. Long-term, he’d like to see the train use even cleaner fuel, such as

biodiesel, like the Mount Washington railway. But for now, he’ll take the mostly clear mornings.

“I want to give praise to the train where praise is due,” he said. “I wish they did this 20 years ago, but I’m glad they’ve spent the money and put the effort in to make the changes they have.”

Rolling into the future Finally, after wildfires, wash outs on the tracks and the COVID-19 pandemic, Johnson said the D&SNG is returning to a sense of normalcy. “There seems to be a lot of pent-up demand,” he said. “It’s as good as or better than we could have predicted.”

DeAnne Gallegos, director of the Silverton Area Chamber of Commerce, said the mere sight of the arriving train is a morale boost for residents, given the D&SNG was unable to make it to Silverton because of the pandemic last year, the first time in the train’s history it did not make trips to town during the summer season.

“And we’re seeing that difference within our community, not being worried about the train not being able to run during drought conditions,” she said.

True, having the D&SNG not at risk of shutting down every time there’s a drought, seemingly a yearly occurrence these days, also provides economic security for the towns of Durango and Silverton, said Jack Llewellyn, director of the Durango Chamber of Commerce.

“If you don’t adapt and change with the times, you can go out of business,” he said.

“And the train has done an incredible job modifying their fleet.” n

Bombs away Forget bears or mountain lions; watch out for undetonated explosives

o there you are, hiking one of Southwest Colorado’s beautiful trails, enjoying the fresh mountain air, towering peaks, vast pine forests, cascading creeks and … explosive bombs.

Recently, MK Thompson, a Forest Ambassador with San Juan Mountains Association, came across a rare sight near a trail north of Durango – but it was nothing near as cool as a lynx or right-sided sidehill wampahoofus (look it up, we did). It was an undetonated bomb, one of many that the Colorado Department of Transportation shoots off in winter to trigger avalanches at risk of spilling onto Highway 550.

“I was just near the trailhead picking up litter, and I didn’t know what it was at first,” she said.

Thompson was on the Pass Creek Trail atop Coal Bank Pass when she discovered part of an explosive. Unsure of what it was, she put it into her truck. The next day, about 150 yards up the same trail, she discovered the main blasting cap that contains the explosive materials, lodged into a tree stump. At first, the bomb appeared to be a water bottle, or even a child’s toy.

After a closer look, it was clear the mysterious, torpedo-like object was no water bottle. She sent a photo to a friend who works for search and rescue in Silverton, and eventually found out it was an explosive. Thompson then marked the location of the bomb with a photo and GPS coordinates, and covered it up.

“In my 20 years of wandering that was the first time I ever came across an explosive,” Thompson said. “Which is kind of

While rare, finding an undetonated bomb amid the beauty of nature is not unheard of, said CDOT spokeswoman Lisa Schwantes.

Every winter, CDOT, along with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, regularly monitors and controls avalanches in 278 avalanche paths located above Colorado highways. Since the program started in 1992, no one has died in an avalanche while driving a Colorado road, even as the

state’s population has boomed and more people venture out into the backcountry.

One common method to mitigate risk is to intentionally set off slides by shooting bombs from the ground or dropping them from helicopters. Every once in a while, however, a dud fails to do its job.

In winter 2018/19, a year infamous for its high avalanche danger, out of the 630 explosives shot in Southwest Colorado, 13 were duds. This year, just six failed to explode. Generally, Schwantes said nation-

wide, the average is about 1 percent of bombs used for avalanche highway control fail to go off, and that’s why CDOT has installed warning signs along the highway where explosives are generally shot.

Every bomb launched, however, is tracked, so in the summer, after the snow has melted, crews have a general idea of where they’re located. Drones, too, have helped more easily find the projectiles. CDOT has already recovered the six duds from this year, as well as two more from previous winters.

It’s too risky to carry the bomb out, so each is detonated where it lies.

“It’s a much smaller explosive device, so it’s not a huge big kaboom,” she said.

After an extensive, five-minute Google search, it doesn’t appear there is an instance where an unlucky hiker tried to pack out a bomb and it exploded. Schwantes, too, said she wasn’t aware of that ever happening either. But the risk is there, she said, and that’s why CDOT is adamant that anyone who comes across an undetonated explosive mark its location, notify authorities and above all, leave it alone.

“The typical hiker won’t stumble upon them because we’re shooting at terrain that’s quite steep,” she said. “But if you see something that looks bright and colorful, and obviously should not be there, don’t touch it.”

Even for Thompson, with her extensive knowledge of the backcountry, it was a learning experience.

“I think about how many times I’ve been on the trails that are right near those signs (warning of explosives), and what are the odds of it being right next to the trail?” she said. “Now I know you just call CDOT.”n

Cootiegrass 2021: highlights – and lowlights

he 48th annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival came and went last weekend in Town Park with inspired performances and a laid-back vibe. Isolated into 10-person corrals per town mandate and limited to just 25 percent capacity (2,500 tickets sold, 3,000 capacity maximum, which included artists, staff, volunteers and vendors), it was well received by those of us lucky enough to get a ticket. If the lockdown of 2020 meant no festival, then the reducedcapacity event of 2021 was acceptable.

Yes, the $100-per-day ticket price was a bit steep.

And, with just four bands per day, it was shorter than usual. I found that the limited amount of music made me show up early each day in order to savor every note.

In fact, I think I just missed two bands all weekend, one of which I managed to hear from the comfortable confines of Dave & Theresa Harrison’s camp, where 12-oz. cans of beers didn’t cost $7 a pop.

To think this was the first post-COVID event of Telluride is naïve. COVID certainly had a front row seat. Contrary to popular belief, it hasn’t magically disappeared. Our tarp was 90 percent fully vaccinated (and the 10th has received one of his shots). Two people from Corral C13 had recovered from COVID, one of whom got quite sick in November. But the vaccine isn’t perfect.

One of my tarp mates noticed a headache and cough in between festivals and decided to get tested. On Friday night, she got the surprising and bad news that she was a breakthrough case in Colorado – just the fifth person to be confirmed with a new case of COVID despite being vaccinated.

This will be a litmus test of sorts, as I was in close proximity to her prior to Friday night’s news. I’ve been vaccinated. We were mostly outdoors. There were a couple of quick hugs early in the festival, but for the most part, we respected our personal space.

Just to be safe, I’m going to get tested this week and again the next. I’m curious about the science. Did my double dose of Pfizer ward off the evil as advertised?

The moral of the story is, you can practice all the hand-washing, masking and social distancing you want … but if the person next to you is sick, then you might catch it. And don’t assume the person next to you has been vaccinated. In a community like Durango with a little more than 50 percent of the folks fully vaccinated, it’s still a coin toss as to whether or not they have.

Fortunately, my friend hasn’t gotten sick. It never really progressed beyond a cough and chest congestion. They’ve sold many of us on the hope that if you catch COVID, your symptoms will be less severe if you’re vaccinated.

Our annual Father’s Day brunch on the tarp was a perfect example of how cooties hop around like a bunny. One couple at brunch was proud of the fact that they’re unvaccinated and are still travelling internationally. These folks didn’t seem like redhatted mouthbreathers. Rather, they were your garden variety, organic-food-eating, take-a-morning-hike-to-the-top-of-MountWilson type of Telluride locals. Young, fit, healthy and beautiful.

Not surprisingly, they felt a little sick upon return from a Caribbean trip a few weeks ago, but never got tested. You connect

the dots … The “I’ll be fine if I get it” sect completely ignores the health of friends, neighbors and 2,500 strangers at a festival. And I’ll be getting that swab up my nose a couple times just for shits and giggles the next two weeks.

But we pressed on, nonetheless. We washed our hands and used the sanitizer and Super Jam at tried not to hug so Telluride much. And the music was spectacular. Here are my weekend highlights: • Yonder Mountain String Band’s Nightgrass show at Club Red on Thursday night. It was the first time I’ve seen new multi-instrumentalist Nick Piccininni, who replaced mandolin player Jacob Jolliff last summer. Jake never seemed to really fit in.

He was too flashy of a picker and had the unenviable task of replacing the charismatic Jeff Austin. Nick, on the other hand, wears a contagious smile that rubs off on everyone in the room. It doesn’t hurt that he can play any instrument with strings and sing Jeff’s old songs with reverence. I haven’t seen this band have this much fun since 2005 or ’06.

• Sam Bush’s mainstage performance Saturday night. His set was heavy with New Grass Revival and John Hartford tunes and deep cuts from his solo catalog. To paraphrase my buddy Richard Skaggs, any time Sam gives us “Spider John,” I’m a happy boy.

• Emmylou Harris’ Sunday mainstage set. She’s grace personified and arguably the most important figure in country music the past 50 years. She walked onstage, picked up her Epiphone guitar and launched into “Roses in the Snow” and “Blue Kentucky Girl,” and you knew it was going to be one of those romantic strolls down memory lane. Along the way, there were nods to her former partner, Gram Parsons, with “Wheels” & “Ooh Las Vegas;” a couple more Bill Monroe dustups on “Scotland” and “Get Up John;” and a tear-jerking version of Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever,” which she dedicated to Shaver, John Prine, Tony Rice, Jerry Jeff Walker and John Starling.

• Six Dollar String Band Saturday afternoon in the plaza at Mountain Village. Robin Davis, Stephen Sellers and Brendan Shafer are working as a trio this summer while Tony Holmquist spends some time in Virginia. But they still managed to whip a small but fervent batch of hippie girls and Texas tourists into a frenzy for two hours during intermittent rain and hail. Many a Montucky Cold Snack was sacrificed during this set.

• Mavis Staples, Sunday gospel set on the mainstage. I don’t know about you, but I sure needed her growl on “I’ll Take You There” and “The Weight” after 2020.

• Leftover Salmon, closing down the mainstage Saturday. Sam may be the King of Telluride, but Vince Herman is its Zen-like high priest.

• Richie & Rosie, Friday afternoon. With just 16 acts booked the second weekend (and 12 the first), the old-timey couple of Richie & Rosie seemed out of place, but they quickly reminded me why I love seeing them in venues large and small.

Since that’s weird to ask people to do, I bought a weighted blanket. Like, literally a blanket stuffed with glass beads. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): Sagittarian author Clarice Lispector observed, “In a state of grace, one sometimes perceives the deep beauty, hitherto unattainable, of another person.” I suspect that this state of grace will visit you soon, Sagittarius—and probably more than once. I hope you will capitalize on it! Take your time as you tune in to the luminescent souls of the people you value. Become more deeply attuned to their uniquely gorgeous genius.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Trailblazing Capricorn psychoanalyst Ernest Jones (1879–1958) said, “There is no sense of contradiction within the unconscious; opposite ideas exist happily side by side.” In other words, it’s normal and natural to harbor paradoxical attitudes; it’s healthy and sane to be awash in seemingly incongruous blends. I hope you will use this astrologically propitious time to celebrate your own inner dichotomies, dear Capricorn. If you welcome them as a robust aspect of your deepest, truest nature, they will serve you well. They’ll make you extra curious, expansive and non-dogmatic. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Aquarian guitarist Django Reinhardt was a celebrated jazz musician in occupied France during World War II. Amazingly, he was able to earn good money by performing frequently—even though he fit descriptions that the rampaging Germans regarded as abhorrent.

Nazis persecuted the Romani people, of which he was one. They didn’t ban jazz music, but they severely disapproved of it.

And the Nazis hated Jews and Blacks, with whom Reinhardt loved to hang out. The obstacles you’re facing aren’t anywhere near as great as his, but I propose we make him your role model for the next four weeks. May he inspire you to persist and even thrive in the face of challenges!

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Piscean author Richard Matheson believed we’ve become too tame and mild. “We’ve forgotten,” he wrote, about “how to rise to dizzy heights.” He mourned that we’re too eager to live inside narrow boundaries. “The full gamut of life is a shadowy continuum,” he continued, “that runs from gray to more gray. The rainbow is bleached.” If any sign of the zodiac has the power to escape blandness and averageness, it’s you Pisceans—especially in the coming weeks. I invite you to restore the rainbow to its full vivid swath: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Maybe even add a few colors.
