Now you can take a little bit of the Goat home with you. The pride of Gem Village, the Billy Goat Saloon, is selling its Bloody Mary mix to go. Appropriately called Hair of the Goat, the mix is available at the Billy Goat as well as bars and stores across SW Colorado Like the bar, the mix is sold in a no-frills, black-labeled mason jar. It’s touted as the perfect combination of zest and flavor, which can be mixed with vodka, gin, tequila or “whatever floats your goat.”

The mix, several years in the works, is the spicy brainchild of head goat herder and mixmaster Ashleigh Tarkington. “I put my heart and energy into everything I do and wanted to wait until I could give this project 100 percent,” she said. “I am so proud of what we have created and couldn’t be happier with the finished product.”

Tarkington has been perfecting the recipe since buying the Goat in 2003, serving more than a thousand Bloodies every week.

To get some Hair of the Goat, show up to the launch party at the Billy Goat this Sat., Oct. 26.

Seed money

The Four Corners Slow Money movement is spouting up. Fresh off awarding its first microloan of $3,000 to Adobe House Farm on Oct. 6, the local chapter has received a matching grant of $5,000 from the national and Boulder chapters. In order to receive the funds, Four Corners Slow Money must raise $5,000 of its own by Dec. 15.

Four Corners Slow Money's goal is to build a robust local food economy by giving farmers, growers and enterprises a leg up in the region. “These funds will go toward offering a new round of loans to local farmers or entrepreneurs that help get food from the fields to our tables,” Four Corners Slow Money member Linda Illsley said.

Folks can become members for $250, which automatically earns them voting privileges for upcoming loans. Those who can’t foot the $250 alone can join with others to make the $250, but together will only have one vote among them.

Farmers and producers can join for a discounted rate of $150. In addition, the local group is also looking for corporate sponsors.

The next round of loans will be awarded in February 2020. Deadline for local farmers and producers to apply is Jan. 30, 2020.

The Slow Money movement is built around local networks, which catalyze grassroots investing in a variety of ways: peer-to-peer lending, public gatherings, pitch fests and on-farm events. There are currently 27 Slow Money groups globally, which have invested $73 million in 752 food enterprises.

LaVidaLocal The D-generation There are six surviving so-called “generations” in America. You might be familiar with the one you belong to, be it the GI Generation, the Mature/Silents, the Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y (also known as the Millennials), or Generation Z (the Boomlets). Being born within a range of years turns out to be the only qualification for membership. Reportedly, you share a set of characteristics, behaviors, experiences and attitudes that function as a cultural epoxy, binding your generation together. Whether or not you feel you fit neatly in that slot you were born into doesn’t matter. It’s your birthright. You are obliged to belong.

I’m officially one of the 77 million Boomers, but I’m also learning to accept my role in a seventh, more universal and often unspoken-of conglomerate known as the D-generation. If you haven’t heard about it, don’t worry. Your affiliation can never be withdrawn, and every being on the planet recognizes he or she is a member sooner or later.

We are all gene-carrying subscribers. The elderly, of course, don’t have any choice but to accept D-generational enlightenment as it arrives. Their bodies and brains keep dialing it down, preparing for the long trip to ... let’s just say, Mars. It’s like belonging to AARP. The card arrives in the mail at the age of 50, whether you ask for it or not. Somehow the marketers find your address. Little invitations to join appear, as if some sort of line in the sand has been drawn.

Let’s face it. Any newborn is the poster child for the D-generation, because that’s exactly when the atrophy of aging begins – at birth! I don’t mean to depress any new parents by mentioning this, especially the ones who are trying to get at least one good night’s sleep over the course of a week. Our smiles and applause as baby takes those first momentous steps is universal, but the eventual fall is also connected to that same moment.

And aging embraces such fluidity. The diapers of infancy are exchanged for the oldsters’ Depends. It’s a sure sign of life when the baby puts on weight, but as the adult adds an extra 30 pounds, the doctor frowns. First bicycle with training wheels, first walker so grandma won’t fall down. It’s a kind of poetry, to see the end embedded in the beginning.

Science and medicine proclaim their latest discovery, and the publicity blitz ramps up, as though a clinical trial may provide us with the answer to what ails us. Wash your hands at least six to 12 times a day, cover your sneezes with your armpit, slosh with water when you walk, drink a little wine but not too much, exercise a bit or a lot, eat a low-fat, low-carb, high-fiber, Mediterranean-DASH-flextarian-MIND-WeightWatchers-Mayo-Clinic-Volumetrics-Nordic-Ornish-appropriate diet. And see a doctor regularly if you’re confused. There may be a pill for that.

“We’re gonna die” is a horrific scream from a Beavis and Butt-Head Do America animation as their airplane suddenly falls out of the sky. Fatalist as it sounds, too often it’s the tragedies and disasters other people suffer that serve as our mortal reminders. Simply waking up in the morning with an ache or two might be a perfect moment to reawaken your sense of how perfect it is to be alive.

Perhaps humanity spends too much energy devoted to the practice of dividing into exclusive clubs, ethnicity, religion, gender, economics, political affiliation and especially age. When I was a teen-ager, I found employment at a nursing home stripping wax from the linoleum corridors, vacuuming a cavernous carpeted dining room where I hid a handy spoon to scrape clots of food loose that had been wheel-chaired flat.

White tile floors under fluorescent lights glaring until two in the morning, I scratched and buffed the bowels of a brown brick building. It took me months to rally the courage to actually look the residents in the face, to learn their names and talk with them. Crossing that threshold fosters a sense of belonging.

At the same point my nursing home job flourished, I encountered a poem by a high school English teacher of mine, a man named Franklin Brainard whose D-generational membership was going to be revoked at the age of 56 when leukemia snuck up on him.

In “My Father” he wrote about a dilapidated farm structure, an old wooden water tank used for cattle where the rings and staves had begun to separate. When the son was asked to describe what he saw, the boy replied that it was falling apart. The father, not missing a beat, provided another perspective, that the old Norwegian farmer would have said it was really falling together. And so are we all.

Bristol Interaction Group, an English tech firm, has designed a phone case that looks and feels like flabby human skin. Using pedestrian funds wisely Dear City Councilors, I recently read the article in the Telegraph entitled “A Bridge Too Far?” I appreciated the reporting on a subject of interest to so many of us in town, especially cyclists who use the roads and trails a lot.

Parks and Rec claim safety as the guiding principle for wanting to construct a separate, $3-4 million pedestrian bridge immediately south of the current bridge and its two sidewalks. They cite a young girl who died cycling on 32nd Street decades ago. But at that time, 32nd was only two lanes wide, with no sidewalks – much like 32nd still is today, east of the city limits.

That city and county section of road now offers more than a half mile of no shoulders, no sidewalks, no lights, not even painted bike lanes. This road is far more heavily used than ever, as it is en-route to the popular cycling route of East Animas, as well as to the many new affordable housing apartments at the corner of 32nd and CR 250.

This leads me to wonder, which is more dangerous?

Get to know Marsha better To the editor, I have known Marsha Porter Norman since the first week I moved to Durango 21 years ago. Following her commitment to community and to me as a neighbor is the reason I would fully support her in her bid for La Plata County commissioner in 2020. She knows and respects a variety of people. My journey beyond plastic To the editor, We can all relate to that trigger, someone or something getting us to change. For me and my relationship with plastics, it started out in Cincinnati. The grocery store gave out tokens in exchange for customers using their own bags. Those tokens then supported charities. My grocery store was helping the environment and cared about nonprofits. I had to jump on board. I purchased my first reusable bags and started out on my journey beyond plastic. To say it was easy, I cannot lie. I first had those darn

bags by the door, but kept forgetting them. I then tried keeping them in the car, but failed to bring them into the store. I had to retrain myself, but I am now successful with my colorful and sturdy bags.

After moving to Durango, I learned the recycling system and felt that I was doing my bit, but with all journeys, there was more ahead. One day I was getting coffee at Common Grounds and had to ask for a lid. The manager, Corrie McCarthy, explained her commitment to reduce plastic. Having customers ask, she feels, is making a difference. Her dedication got me thinking, what more can I do? Refrigerator dishes have replaced zip lock bags, my husband gets his Gatorade from a mix, and mesh bags hold my produce. My journey is only that, my journey. It is a hope that everyone can begin a journey, beyond plastic.

Riding the wrecking ball of history To the editor, The proverbial saying, “If it looks like a duck, acts like a duck, it must be a duck,” speaks volumes into the recent weeks of political chaos where there are still folks thinking, some pretending, that there is no wrong doing by our Commander in Chief.

In my opinion, many, on both sides of the Washington, D.C., aisles, have been continuously reckless for decades in all kinds of bad behaviors, like gridlock/lobbyist influence/list goes on, without previous U.S. presidents at the helm willing to stop it.

Trump appears to get off on manning the wrecking ball.

Parents have an obligation to nip bad behavior in the bud, yet unfortunately greed and corruption can take over your childrens’ sensibility with the help of bad role models that disappoint us but get away with a lot. Justice isn’t always there.

Hopefully, this evil, controlling trance will disappear and the angels in all of us will prevail.

Running with the devil

To the editor, As I drove out of the ravine onto the newly paved county road that tempted 20 miles above the posted speed limit, I made out a distant kaleidoscopic twinkle. Continued down the road it resolved itself into the aggressive red and blue flashers of a state trooper. I thought, yuppers Petie, let that be a reminder, respect that posted speed limit.

I slowed down, then pulled into the traffic-free oncoming lane to give the trooper plenty of room. As I neared, the movement of my passing vehicle created a cinematic swipe as the parallax of the trooper’s large athletic body hinted at, then revealed, something more ominous than a speeding ticket happening here.

Driver outside the vehicle, facing the trooper. Sparkling ruby red hair. No, not hair? What’s that? Horns? Sporting a spiked tail? Oh no! Oh yeah! A full-body sparkly red devil’s costume. Hood and all, with middle-aged padding pressing against this outfit intended for a slinky twenties body.

The gay costume didn’t fit the two hands pawing at her purse, face downturned and intent. Fishing for her driver’s license I assumed. My last memory during that moment of voyeurism was a slight back and forth waver of the devil’s body. Was it observation or imagination, I’ll never know.

I hoped it was imagination, for my musings were already moving forward to imagining this sad devil being taken for that ride down to the country jail and the most embarrassing night and day of this unfortunate’s life.

My final thoughts were, dance with the devil and sooner or later you’re going to have to pay the piper.

Turning point Silverton Avi School looks to next chapter after challenging, historic winter

ollowing a tough winter season with record snowfall and avalanches, backcountry experts in the Southwest are turning the corner with the Four Corners Snow and Avalanche Workshop. The full-day of avalanche education and stories shared by legendary backcountry experts takes place Sat., Oct. 26, in Silverton.

“It was a trying year,” Michael Ackerman, recreational programs director for the Silverton Avalanche School, said.

“We came out of it pretty banged up … this is a new chapter moving forward.”

The 300-year event

By the time spring hit full swing this year, many parts of Southwest Colorado were still reporting snowpack levels at 150-200 percent of average. According to Ackerman, experts were calling it an event that only happens every 300 years.

“Most professionals say we won’t see this again in our lifetimes,” he added.

After several years of dusty summer days and dry winter months, many were happy to see the flakes fly – but, the pace at which the storms came brought a new problem.

“Mother Nature likes things on a simmer,” he explained.

Anything that happens quickly, like rapid snowfall or temperature changes, can tip the balance.

After the first of the year, the Southwest was battered by storm after storm – most being measured in feet instead of

That’s what happened in March, Ackerman said, when Red Mountain Pass closed for more than two weeks after an avalanche buried the roadway in several feet of snow.

“The unique thing about our mountains is we tend to preserve weak layers or problematic layers,” he added.

“Eventually, you tip the balance.”

Statewide, 46 people were caught in avalanches over the 2018-19 winter season and eight people died, including one student with the Silverton Avalanche School.

It happened Jan. 5 during a Level 2 course for advanced backcountry skiers near Red Mountain Pass. According to a report from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, two avalanches were triggered and all six skiers in the group were caught in the slides.

One of the skiers, the school’s instructor, was buried by the first slide and survived.

When asked about what happened, Ackerman said he’s still seeing things from an 80,000-foot view. It often takes time for people to talk about and share these types of stories, he added. And, in time, this story will also be remembered and shared.

In the weeks and months that followed, Ackerman said he walked into conference halls and meeting rooms wondering if the only thing on the mind of his colleagues was, “There’s the guy from Silverton.”

Instead, what he felt from others in the industry was understanding and empathy.

They all know the sport is not safe, he said. The goal of places like the Silverton Avalanche School is to make it as safe as possible, to share information and educate each other in an effort to minimize the risks inherent to the backcountry.

“You’re in an uncontrollable mountain environment,” Ackerman explained. “There’s nothing safe out there.”

The awareness of these risks and a desire to share information is how it all began back in 1962.

In those early days, Silverton residents and local law enforcement started coming together to talk about the avalanche dangers unique to the San Juan Mountains.

Geographical features, like steep terrain, combined with climate and unusual weather patterns create a singularly unique snowpack that has challenged snow scientists and backcountry enthusiasts for decades. It’s this environment that has made the region a key player in the evolution of snow science and development of avalanche education.

“There is no more difficult snow climate,” Ackerman said.

He explained that was the genesis for the Four Corners Snow and Avalanche Workshop – bringing the backcountry experience and industry expertise to the spot with these unique challenges.

“Having the Armstrongs come back,” Ackerman said, “to me, it feels like the story’s coming full circle.”

He’s hoping the event becomes an annual pilgrimage for industry experts in the region for years to come. Unlike other conferences, he explained, this event is intended to be intimate, relaxed and uniquely Silverton.

Earlier this month, alongside about a thousand colleagues, Ackerman attended the Colorado Snow and Avalanche Workshop in Breckenridge. The sold-out event was certainly bigger than the one planned for Silverton

on Saturday, but that’s kind of the point. As much as he’d like to see the Four Corners version become a draw for industry leaders and backcountry enthusiasts, he also wants it to be more personal, giving people the time to share their stories and their expertise.

Coming together as a community is one way to learn and grow from a difficult winter season, Ackerman said, and the workshop is meant to foster that with region-specific education, social gatherings and more.

“There’s going to be a lot of storytelling,” he said.

“Then we’ll put our heads together and plan for what’s to come.” n

Children of the Earth Maria’s welcomes trio of environmental authors to town

his week, Maria’s Bookshop welcomes a trifecta of nature writers who aren’t simply content to understand things as they seem. Like all the best nature writers, these three dig deep, climb high and venture far to comprehend human existence as part of the struggles, conflicts and tenacity of the American Southwest – and their own personal places within it all.

First up, in a twin billing, Maria’s hosts debut authors Ayja Bounous and Zak Podmore this Thursday evening, Oct. 24, to discuss and sign their nonfiction works. Then, at Pine Needle Dry Goods on Tues., Oct. 29, is an author on the other side of the career spectrum. Jack Loeffler, who has thrown monkey wrenches with Edward Abbey and played trumpet for nuclear detonations, brings his latest nonlinear memoir to town.

“These three authors speak to the love of place and the natural world, in a way that I think the Durango community can really connect with,” Evan Schertz, owner of Maria’s, said. “All three of them care deeply about the Southwest, and the people and places that make it so special.”

Like many people in their twenties, she’s striving to understand the relationship between her own actions (from skiing all the way to having children) and the advance of climate change.

For her, these issues strike particularly close to home – she grew up in the snow outside of Salt Lake City, and

that very snow looks to be one of the first casualties of our shifting climate.

“My relationship to snow is an unsolved problem,” Bounous writes. “When I ski, I participate in an industry reliant upon fossil fuels for operation and transportation. When I travel to the mountains, ride chairlifts or spend time in resort buildings, I release carbon emissions into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. … [B]y skiing, I contribute to snow’s demise.”

Yet, her hope glistens bright as … well, new-fallen snow. By exploring moments from her life and diving into a developing relationship, Bounous writes more than a love letter (or worse, a eulogy) for winter. Her conscientious curiosity asks more questions than she can answer, but she always moves forward, believing in a world that’s worth defending.

It might seem strange at first to partner Bounous with Podmore for this event. After all, Bounous has her head in the snow, and Podmore has both feet firmly planted in the riverbed. His book, Confluence: Navigating the Personal & Political on Rivers of the New West, is less memoir and more first-person exploration of water (from the Dolores to Washington’s Elwha River) and people (from uranium mill protesters in Utah to asylum seekers along the Rio Grande).4

His style is more journalistic and, at least on the surface, less personal than Bounous.’ Yet there’s that pesky word “personal” in the book’s subtitle, and Podmore ultimately embraces the way that his mother – who essentially raised him on the river – pervades every page of the book, explicitly or not.

“My mother had just passed away from lung cancer, and I was trying, more than anything, to distance myself from that loss by reporting on environmental issues and desert rivers,” Podmore said. “As the book progressed, however, I realized that project itself was an homage to my mother. … She steeped me in the beauty of the Colorado Plateau and taught me to appreciate what is still a centerpoint of my life – flowing water in the redrock desert.”

Ultimately, these two books dovetail together fittingly.

Both bring us to question our relationships with the Earth in this part of the world and our responsibilities to it – and not just to the land, but to the people and other beings who inhabit it. For both authors, the answers about how to approach the “unsolved problems” of our way in the world are less about right and wrong and more about understanding the full, complete, paradoxical picture.

“There’s a lingering belief that wilderness rivers are somehow a world apart from the civilization beyond their canyon walls,” Podmore said. “Our demands for water in the country’s driest region; our tendency to dam, divert and dry up our streams; our history of poisoning water through industrial activity and the looming threat of cli-

mate change – all of this, I believe, needs to be taken into account alongside descriptions of canyon alcoves hanging with columbines or Canada geese honking overhead.”

Based on these writings, Bounous and Podmore may well be the Loraxes of the near future – speaking for the trees, as it were. But Jack Loeffler has been speaking up for decades, not only as a writer but as an aural historian, radio producer, jazz musician and sound-collage artist. His memoir, Headed Into the Wind, takes a meandering yet typically concise look at his life, how he came to find and love the desert, and the voices of those who shaped his existence.

“Over the last half century, I’ve been privileged to wander throughout this mythic landscape bearing a recorder, microphones, notebook and pen,” Loeffler writes in the

book. “In the deepest sense, this lifetime has been a pilgrimage in quest of the Spirit of Place as perceived by those with refined sensibilities, honed consciousness.

The message is clear. The Earth is a living organism and we are part of its consciousness. We are and could remain a spectacular aspect of Earth’s consciousness – if we don’t go extinct.”

It’s impossible not to find humor in Loeffler’s writing. He’s an easygoing storyteller, and each fairly short snippet of his book can rope you in like a fireside tale. His thoughts wind like a river, fed by tributaries from all directions – and the book reads like an upriver trip, where every branching stream is fair game. Yet it’s the brevity in moments, like that reminder about our all-too-possible extinction, that drives the points home.

If Bounous and Podmore and others like them are to continue revealing to us the world we live in, we must also keep listening to the relevance of those who have witnessed the changes. If we’re lucky, what people like Loeffler can share will help gird us for what’s accelerating toward us. As Bounous points out, “In my short twenty-five years of life, I had seen as much change in the snowpack as (my grandfather, Junior Bounous) had in his 90 years of life.”

In Durango, we may witness such changes as much as anyone. The classic Southwestern ecosystems balance each other out here: the high desert meets the ponderosa forests, and the river stitches us all together. Perhaps, then, it’s perfect that these three distinct voices should converge here this week. They are each worth listening to. n

Liking them apples

or the candy industry, Halloween is like Christmas.

The five biggest candy shopping days of the year are all in October, as All Hallows’ Eve sells more candy than any other holiday.

Before being co-opted by big sugar in the 1950s, the roots of Halloween extend back to a Celtic tradition called Samhain, which honors that moment each year when fall blows in. Samhain’s founding observers saw it as a time when the boundaries between the living and spirit worlds became porous, allowing the spirits to come bang on your door like neighborhood trick or treaters.

As time passed and history was written, Samhain absorbed other holidays that also reflected the characteristics of the season, including harvest, death, wind and the abundance of sweet fruits dangling from trees. Appropriately enough, after the Celts were conquered by the Romans, Samhain was combined with Pomona, a celebration of the Roman goddess of the harvest, according to History.com.

Today, while nature’s candy dangles from trees like a real-life fairy tale, we spend more than $9 billion each year on plastic sacks filled with little shiny bits of chocolate-stuffed packaging.

Apples are the second-most popular fruit in America, after bananas. But fruit, alas, is not as popular as candy.

The same way Samhain opens the door to the world of the dead, candy opens the floodgates for evil sugar spirits to enter the bodies of children.

The sweetness of an apple, by contrast, doesn’t turn kids into little poltergeists, and the fruit has long been used as a barometer of hunger. Growing up, many people of certain generations were told, “If you aren’t hungry enough to eat an apple, you aren’t really hungry.” The same has never been said about candy.

I’m not suggesting people give out apples for Halloween. That would be irresponsible. By convention, and for everyone’s peace of mind and legal protection, all sugar toxins distributed to trick or treaters must be hermetically sealed for safety.

I have an apple tree that produces McIntosh-like apples, blushing dark red with a piercing flavor that’s like an arms race between sweet and tart. Most of the apples go through the cider press, but I’ve saved a few boxes of the biggest, most beautiful individuals to eat the old-fashioned way. I’ve been thinking a lot about the apple hunger test and noticing that when I’m hungry enough

to eat an apple, the fruit’s characteristics become extra vivid. The perfume, sharpness and sweetness all become more enticing.

With cider, any fruit without a worm is a bonus. But if you don’t have access to a cider press, another option for apples – blemished or otherwise – is to carve them into apple Jack-o’-Lanterns.

Essentially, treat an apple like a mini-pumpkin, and then let it dry and shrivel into something that resembles a shrunken head. Apple is softer and more forgiving than pumpkin, and you can snack on the bits that you carve away.

If you live in a sunny climate, you can shrink apple heads on a windowsill in about a week. You can also use an oven on the lowest setting, or leave in proximity to a heater. But these won’t be edible like a dehydrated apple jack-o’-lantern.

The next day, when my son was at school, I took a nibble off the corner of one, and my eyes got as big as his ghoul’s. We had rubbed them with lime juice to keep the apple jack-o-lanterns from browning, and that, it turns out, adds extra zing that is shockingly delicious. I like them apples better than candy. But good luck convincing the trick or treaters.

A dehydrator with shelving spaced widely enough to accommodate an entire apple is the device of choice with which to make these sweet and sassy skulls. If this project becomes the impetus to buy a dehydrator, you won’t be sorry. Also extremely helpful: a tomato corer or similar cutting spoon.

Apple Jack-o’-Lanterns Serves an army of spooky undead shrunken-headed zombies Apples, the bigger the better Lime or lemon juice Peel the apple, going around its “equator,” while leaving a bit of peel around the stem and its opposite “pole.” When peeled, look at the apple and decide where the face should be. Then use the coring spoon to scoop out the core from the opposite side, leaving a big hole in the back of the shrunken head. Scooping the insides allows the apple jack-o’lanterns to dry more quickly.

Next, carve the mouth, otherwise you might not have enough room below the eyes and nose. That is the extent of any artistic advice that I should be giving, other than to make sure the nose is smaller than the eyes.

Rub the carved apple with lemon or lime juice and place in the center of a dehydrator, with the temperature at 135, for about 12 hours. If using an oven, set it on the lowest setting, with convection on if you’ve got it, and keep a watchful eye on them apples for about two to six hours, depending on the situation.

Whatever equipment you employ, you should test your process all the way through with just an apple or two before carving your personal army of sweet ghouls.

You are not only testing your gear, but your technique and process. Learn how it dries, with or without pieces of peel. If a big scary mouth clenches into a grimace, pry it open into more of a primordial scream. Little touches like that can make all the difference on Halloween. n

Skiing in a winter wonderland: FOSJ brings Teton Gravity’s latest What: “Winterland,” the latest film

To stoke the, well, stoke, the local nonprofit, in conjunction with Pine Needle Mountaineering, is screening “Winterland,” the latest ski porn from Teton Gravity Research. In addition to the film, there will be drawings for gear, swag giveaways and a bar for 21+. Plus, everyone in attendance will have a shot at the film tour’s grand prizes, including trips to Sierra Nevada’s beer camp in California and TGR’s hometown Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and more. Proceeds will benefit FOSJ, which is dedicated to educating outdoor enthusiasts about playing safely in the backcountry during the winter. There will also be information about upcoming FOSJ events and FOSJ gear for sale.

For “Winterland,” TGR called on the world’s most accomplished freeskiers and snowboarders, resulting in some of the most thrilling and extreme footage captured by the company in its 22 years. The film includes scenes from Alaska, Austria, Jackson, Norway and British Columbia.

However, at its core, “Winterland” is a celebration of ski and snowboard culture, celebrating the athletes’ connection

to the roots of skiing as well as the pure joy of sliding on snow.

“I think everyone can relate to ‘Winterland’ because even though it’s not one specific place, it’s more of a state of mind,” Jon Klaczkiewicz, TGR’s Head of Production, said. “Beyond showcasing the incredible action our athletes continue to astound us with, ‘Winterland’ really embodies the magic that all skiers and snowboarders feel when they find themselves in the right place at the right time; when everything comes together.”

“Winterland” is the first ski film from TGR since the release of 2018’s “Far Out,” which was named Movie of the Year by Powder magazine. TGR also claimed Best Documentary at the 2018 Surfer Awards in December for its captivating and complicated look at the late Andy Irons, a three-time ASP World Champion surfer who battled bipolar disorder.

“It’s just fun to be in the mountains with these athletes – they inject new energy into the action and offer fresh perspectives, and hopefully that comes across in the film,” said renowned freeskier Tim Durtschi, who appears in the film alongside Nick McNutt, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Angel Collinson and 13-year-old rising star Kai Jones.

Dear Rachel, I fear I’ve made a horrible mistake. I’ve made a new friend in the last couple months, and we’ve had good, frequent fun, like new friends do. You know, drinks or soaks or hikes two, three, even four times a week. We’ve now entered the phase where friendships are supposed to taper off to occasional meetups, and eventually to avoiding each other in the grocery store.

But she’s keeping the intensity dialed to 11, and I don’t know how to push her away without hurting her feelings. Any ideas?

There’s no going back now. You are pretty much doomed to answer her phone calls (or texts, or snaps, or whatever) and meet her for coffee whenever she likes. While you are allowed to last-minute cancel on as many as a third of your friend-dates, you are still obligated to make up for that with birthday shenanigans. Sorry to say, you may be stuck with a bestie for life.

I think I have it worse. My friends came to visit with their newborn, and the entire time they stayed in my house they never once offered to have me hold the baby. Whether I actually wanted to hold the babe or not is irrelevant. By the end, I took it very personally. Basically, they didn’t trust me not to drop or maim their child.

There’s no other way to interpret that, right?

Friends don’t change diapers of friends’ babies whom they are not allowed to hold. I don’t know that he’s doing anything illegal, per se, but he sure likes to flaunt his disregard for living in a society. According to my analysis, tender orgasmic experiences will profoundly enhance your emotional intelligence in the coming weeks – and make you an excellent decision-maker just in time for your big decisions. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In the 1530s, explorer Jacques Cartier led expeditions from France to the New World. As Europeans often did back then, he and his team were rude and brutish to the indigenous folks who lived there, stealing their land, kidnapping some of them and slaughtering herds of great auks in a bird sanctuary. It’s revealed in these lyrics: “All that peace and that unity: all that weak sh— will ruin me.” In the coming weeks, Leo, I urge you to practice the exact opposite of Drake’s approach. It’s time to treat yourself to an intense and extended phase of self-care.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s a favorable time to refresh your relationships with your basic sources and to make connections with new basic sources. I

t is funny how the mind works, but it seems that the older you get the more you remember the incidents of the past with a greater clarity. I have to make lists to remember the things that I have to do tomorrow. They say short-term memory decreases as you age and longterm memory is heightened. This can be a blessing or a curse depending on the person.

I guess it was about 30 years ago. I was finishing grading papers in the late afternoon and heard a persistent, pleading whine from outside the window of the classroom. My room was on the west side of the Ignacio Elementary School, and the windows faced the traffic on highway 151. I decided to investigate the situation. It was early March, and a cold rain fell most of the day. I threw on my rain jacket and headed toward the foreboding moans. To my surprise, about 30 yards from the playground, I could make out a dark object in the ditch by the road. As I approached it, I realized in horror that it was an injured dog sitting in a few inches of water, shivering and whining. I approached it carefully as there could be a real danger in coming in contact with an animal in pain. It was a fairly large, chocolate hound with beautiful golden eyes. I called to it in a soft tone, but it didn’t move, so warily I approached it with a gentle manner. To my relief, it licked my hand, and I patted its head.

I decided to slide down the embankment and help it out of the ditch. Unfortunately, its injuries were too severe. I climbed out of the hole, my shoes soaked from the channeling water. I went to get the truck.

Returning with the vehicle, I parked off the side of the road and went to retrieve the dog. While trying to lift the animal, it began to whine pitifully.

I realized this would not work so I returned with a blanket, slowly sliding it under its hind legs; I was able to lift and pull him out of the culvert. With one great heave, I landed the poor fellow onto the bench seat. I took a deep breath and headed for the Humane Society in Durango.

The poor creature put his head on my lap and never took his golden eyes off me. He had that unutterable expression that only dogs seem to have when in trouble. I petted his head as I drove, trying to comfort him with my right hand.

I prayed that things would turn out OK, hoping the injuries were not that bad, and perhaps there would be a way to fix him up and I could take him home.

Distances can feel greater than they really are when you are under duress. It was the longest ride into town.

We finally reached our destination. The Humane Society in those days was on a hill on the backside of the college.

As I drove up, an attendant happened to be in the parking lot. He realized that it was an emergency and quickly assisted me in getting the dog into the building. It so happened that a vet was on hand. The vet and attendant gently examined him. The poor fellow never took his eyes off me as they put him on a gurney and sped him down the hall. It was a look that seemed to say, “Why are abandoning me now?” The vet returned and asked me if it was my dog. I told him it was a rez dog that I found bleeding in a ditch with no identification, unfortunately a victim of a hit and run along the highway. He told me that they had to euthanize him as his back was broken and that he had major internal injuries. I sat in silence for a while in the waiting area and then reluctantly headed for the truck. I would never see him again. That night it continued to rain as I drove home. The next morning, I went out to clean the seat and noticed a paw print traced in mud and blood. My hand trembled as I slowly wiped it clean.

Perhaps we choose to remember certain events. Perhaps we are the victims of our own selective memory.

Perhaps our long-term memory is a compass that guides our inner sense of responsibility and compassion. Then again, perhaps in the realm of fate, suffering can sometimes be relieved, and perhaps, just maybe, those golden eyes were somehow saying, “thank you!”
