Hold onto your arteries! Getting your greasy hands on a greasy Double Double no longer requires a seven-hour drive out of state. In-N-Out Burger is coming to the Mile High City.

According to the Denver Post, the Southern California chain won approval this week from the town of Lone Tree for construction of a 3,867square-foot In-N-Out northwest of Park Meadows Mall. This is the first time in its 71-year existence the chain has expanded beyond California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and Texas.

Credited with being the first drive-thru, In-N-Out was founded in 1948 and went on to gain cult-like status, ironic given the chain’s religious slant (check the bottom of your soda cup or french fries next time.)

Denverites can expect their religious experience to begin at around this time next year. The restaurant is expecting so much traffic, the Post reports its drive-through will be equipped to handle 26 cars, qualifying it for the distinction of being Colorado’s longest fast-food drive-thru.

Maybe you’ll need that prayer after all.

Mountain bike purists who think e-bikes are cheating can think again. A new study has found e-bikes provide a similar level of exercise as regular mountain bikes.

According to Adventure Journal, health researchers at BYU found mountain bikers experienced nearly identical heart rates on e-bikes as they did on 100 percent human-powered steeds.

The study looked at 33 mountain bikers ages 1865, fitted with heart rate monitors and tracked on Strava. Riders chose either an e-bike or a conventional mtb and rode a 6-mile loop, including 700-foot elevation gain and one “particularly demanding” milelong climb with a five percent grade. Upon finishing, riders rested then hopped on whatever bike they didn’t ride the first round.

When the dust settled and the Strava was Stravaed, researchers found cyclists’ heart rates averaged 145 bpm (beats per minute) on the e-bikes, only slightly less than the 155 bpm on regular mtbs. Both of those numbers are considered to be in the “vigorous” zone for intensity.

Of course, this vigorousness lasts for much shorter on an e-bike, with riders averaging 4 mph faster and finishing the course 12 minutes sooner.

“Many of us have these perceived barriers about exercise, that it is hard and painful,” study author Cougar Hall (who incidentally has one of the best names we’ve ever heard), said. “This study could be a critical catalyst for populations who struggle to exercise. The participants got cardiovascular results, but didn’t really feel like they were working out.”

This study confirms what previous studies have found: e-bikes provide benefits on par with conventional bikes partially because they encourage more riding. European researchers found e-bikers rode further and more often than conventional bikers. No word on whether their oldschool friends still heckle them at the trailhead.

LaVidaLocal Go in beauty After my latest used car purchase, I filled the gas tank and headed out for a serious road test that would take me all the way to Sedona, Ariz. The engine had only 27,000 certified miles on it and for the first time I was behind the wheel of a vehicle built in the same decade that I was living. As I reached to crank up the heat, I pushed a funny little button with an icon of wavy lines hovering in the air and a radiant warmth bathed my butt in comfort. “Holy shit!” I said aloud.

Maybe I shouldn’t have said that. And maybe I should back up a bit.

For me, a replacement car has never been a new experience. I’ve owned 24 vehicles in my 50 years of licensed driving, but none were factory fresh. Other drivers broke them in for me. I am fully capable of going into debt like 80 percent of the public, but based on the way new things sparkle for such a short a time in my presence, I stay away from the showroom, and technically, the showroom sales staff tends to keep me at a distance too.

Like the Edsel, I was born with a glitch, an uncanny unconscious impulse that damages every nice thing I’ve ever owned. I don’t mean I actually destroy my property. No, I just crack, scrape, scratch, ding or crease the sleek new thing shortly after taking possession. After the “incident,” the future seems to work out just fine, but the scar from that oops moment lingers, perhaps to remind me of my destiny.

This new used car ran beautifully all the way to Sedona. The weather surprised me with sunshine and dry pavement after a threatening storm forecast. I checked into an overpriced motel room, hiked a few paths and slept until the next morning. Before leaving town, I decided to experiment with a navigation system that didn’t involve unfolding and refolding maps along well-worn creases. I entered into the dashboard display the name, Humane Society Thrift Store. I can’t imagine any living thing on this planet that understands living a new-used life better than sheltered animals.

When I arrived, I experienced a rather tense moment trying to decide on the safest parking spot, one where other drivers would be able to inflict only minimal damage. I didn’t realize at the time that human beings were the least of my worries.

Walking away from the car after locking it, I glanced approvingly over my shoulder at its perfectly luminous white sheen. The dealer labeled it “Blizzard Pearl,”

which also means white, so much like every other vehicle in any given parking lot.

White is considered a “safe” color with excellent visibility and has been America’s top automotive paint choice since 2006. For me, of course, the paint came with the car.

What happened next wasn’t anyone’s fault. I’d parked at the end of a short row where I reasoned the car would be protected on one side, and I positioned it so the customer parked on my passenger side had plenty of space to fling his or her doors wide open.

Finished with shopping and stepping outside, I was horrified. My car had been transformed into one of Cruella De Vil’s 101 Dalmatians. The hood, windshield, and roof were splattered with what I first thought might only be mud, but upon closer examination I realized was bird shit.

One kamikaze bird I could have forgiven, but an entire flock of winged creatures? Perhaps a full-fledged wedge of migrating geese,or possibly a ghost squadron of petulant passenger pigeons?

The car next to me did not reveal one drop. I walked to the passenger side and examined the pavement: entirely clean. I had been targeted.

At the convenience store next door, I commandeered two windshield squeegees, running back and forth between the fluid container, attempting to clean the mess off my car before the painteating slime dried. Ten minutes of scrubbing left me feeling – I should say it – pooped.

But on the drive home through Navajo country, the vistas literally lifted my eyes, making it impossible to obsess over my misadventure. Walk in beauty, a traditional prayer reminded me: walk in beauty and leave the negativity behind.

Then the cloud-laden skies loosed a flurry of snowflakes that danced against the windshield, and at last I knew what the Earth had been trying to tell me. Bird or cloud, wind or sun – everything embraces its flaw.

In homage to the moment, I pulled to the shoulder and opened the hood. As if shouting into a tin horn, I declared, “I forgive you.” Snowflakes swept past my head and pressed into the engine compartment. A word shaped itself out of a cloud in my head: Beauty.

A better name for this model than Highlander. Go in Beauty. And I went.

Lawmakers love their health care To the editor, Why do lawmakers on both sides of the aisle drag their feet about reforming our unnecessarily complex, inadequate, corporate-run health-care system? It’s overpriced, inefficient and unable to meet the health-care needs of millions of Americans. Yet nothing happens but bickering and fearmongering.

Now is the time to vote for candidates who support a national improved Medicare for All system. A program that allows you the freedom to choose your doctors and hospitals anywhere in the country and keep them for life.

That’s a choice worth fighting for.

In polls, e-mails and town hall meetings, we’ve been insisting on the urgency with which legislators must fix health care. Yet they do nothing but criticize various proposals and try to abolish our existing program without a plan to replace it. For decades, private insurance companies have caused a failed free-market health-care system.

Health insurers, pharmaceutical companies and the American Medical Association have been pouring billions of dollars into legislators’ re-election campaigns. Their armies of lobbyists strongly urge these legislators to maintain the status quo.

Our lawmakers don’t feel the health-care pain like their constituents. Our legislators have and continue to enjoy top-quality, “socialist-style” care that they deny the public.

Lawmakers receive a huge taxpayer subsidy for their federal employee health insurance plans. They receive gold level Obamacare with taxpayers covering 72 percent of their premium costs. So, while many politicians in Congress openly oppose what some lambast as “socialized medicine,” they have no qualms about dipping into that tax-paid health coverage for themselves & their families. 4

There’s a medical center in the U.S. Capitol building called the Office of the Attending Physician. It provides a wealth of primary care and emergency services, specialists and a pharmacy for senators, representatives and Supreme Court justices. They just walk in and scads of doctors, nurses, technicians, pharmacists and other professionals are ready to care for them. No appointment, no waiting, no insurance card needed and no bill. They receive excellent health care, maybe the best in the world.

There are minimal annual fees (less than $600), but the care comes free even if they haven’t paid the fee.

If the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is repealed, members of Congress have a fallback plan. They would be able to return to their cushy federal program using a substantial taxpayer subsidy. If the ACA is repealed, 21 million Americans will lose their health insurance. Nearly 133 million Americans who have a pre-existing condition would lose their guarantee of coverage. And, 2 million Americans under the age of 26 would likely be forced off their parents’ insurance. Lawmakers become vested after five years of full congressional participation and, at retirement, receive their federal benefits for life.

Our members of Congress may be immune from financial pain, fear of denial and emotional stress inflicted on millions of Americans by the inefficient, bureaucratic, greed-driven corporate system. They may not feel the urgency to restructure a system that is working really well for them. Nor are they fully committed to covering those with pre-existing conditions. They ignore millions of Americans suffering from a broken system working only for those wealthy enough to afford it.

However, many of our legislators do work hard to break our current system.

Our physicians and other providers have top-notch skills, training and knowledge, but they operate within a flawed system. Success is not measured in care and successful outcomes but in profits. Maybe that’s why over 22,000 members of the Physicians for a National Health

Program and 150,000 members of the National Nurses United are advocating for a universal, single-payer, national health program.

Would we see progress in health-care reform if we removed the pampered care that our lawmakers have generously awarded themselves? This is legislative hypocrisy, and it is at the crux of our broken healthcare system.

Not all legislators refuse to give the average American family more care for less cost, there are currently 119 sponsors for M4A in the House; 15 in the Senate who are stepping up. Check to see if your representative or senator is committed to improving your health care.

‘Deep state’ or Trump resistors?

To the editor, What are you grateful for this Thanksgiving? Hopefully good health, prosperity, dear friends and loving family, and the privilege to live in a beautiful place.

In addition to those, I’m seriously grateful in these ugly political times for career federal government employees who bravely persist in doing their jobs as best they can and maintaining their first loyalty to the country, the Constitution and the rule of law. They are ambassadors and other State Department people, national intelligence, homeland security and FBI people. The people our so-called president refers to as the “deep state.”

What that means is that they have refused to give their first loyalty to him personally as he demands. They resist his demeaning the work they do in favor of whatever Vladimir Putin tells him, and his claim that he can change the Constitution by decree and is not subject to any rule of law, either as president or before he was elected. He has claimed that he could pardon himself if he is held to the rule of law. That’s called dictatorship in my book.

To me, these are the real impeachable offenses. So I give thanks to the deep state people and the very few congressional Republicans who dare to speak out against what’s happening. Unfortunately those very few don’t include our own Scott Tipton or Cory Gardner.

The cultivation of ignorance

To the editor, A recent headline read: “Trump: ‘Impeachment is an attack on Democracy itself.’”

There in a nutshell is the technique that Trump and cynical Republican politicians use to try to stay in power.

Call it the cultivation of ignorance: Impeachment could lead to the removal from office of a duly elected president. What could be more undemocratic! It’s shameful what these Democrats are doing. Nancy Pelosi is a threat to the foundations of our precious Democratic system.

Thank goodness president Trump is a fighter and has a strong character and is standing up to people like her and the traitorous Adam Schiff, who is directing the impeachment inquiry!

Democracy under attack? How many people understand that the founders provided for impeachment in the Constitution because they wanted our country to be a democracy and not a monarchy? How many people understand that the president is in no danger of being removed except by a two-thirds vote of the Republican-controlled senate? Yet Trump and his enablers are claiming that Democrats are trying to stage a coup; trying to subvert our precious democratic system. Tens of millions of people believe this nonsense because Trump, Republican politicians, and right-wing media propagandists are so highly skilled at the cultivation of ignorance.

“We can’t ignore Gladstone,” Churchwell added. “I think everyone has that in the back of their mind.” 4

In three of the proposed strategies, the EPA would tackle other mine sites and waterways while evaluating the best way to deal with the Gladstone mines.

The first proposal, which is broken up into Strategies 1A and 1B, focuses on reducing metals and improving water quality in specific sections of the watershed. 1A puts the spotlight on remediation efforts along the Upper Animas, while 1B expands that attention to include Mineral Creek.

The second option, Strategy 2, is called the “worst first” approach. This looks at individual mine sites and deals with each independently, starting with the worst one first. Once the top polluters are dealt with, the agency would re-evaluate and move on down the list.

The third strategy concentrates efforts and funds on building a permanent water treatment plant along Upper Cement Creek at Gladstone. Currently, a temporary plant in that area is treating the water and mine waste leaking from the Gold King. But it’s not even addressing the other three mines, and it’s not a system that’s meant to last – which is causing even more issues.

As an example, the process for treating the mine waste is to pump it into gigantic bags filled with lime. These bags allow the water to leach out while the metals attach to the lime in a thick orange sludge that is then laid out across the ground to dry. However, the piles of sludge have been building up, and the EPA is struggling to find a place to put it.

Strategy 3 includes a plan to build a permanent plant that would not only address all four mines, but would also include a long-term plan to deal with the sludge. The biggest issue with this option, which the EPA acknowledges, is the significant upfront cost and permanent funding needed to maintain the facility.

Finally, Strategy 4 in the EPA’s proposal centers on installing bulkheads on Upper Cement Creek adits and tunnels in the Gladstone area. These bulkheads are not meant to permanently plug up the mine like a cork. Instead,

“What you’re trying to do is return the mountain to the water equilibrium it had before humans poked holes in it,” he explained.

Bulkheads have been used in some abandoned mines around Silverton in the past, with some success.

“The bulkhead option is certainly of interest,” Butler said. “A lot the bulkheads that have been put in, though, were put in and left. That’s not an option we’d support.”

According to Churchwell, one of the reasons mine water becomes so acidic – and therefore toxic – is because it’s exposed to oxygen. Bulkheads help keep the oxygen out, which gives the mine time to lower the acidity, mak-

The Community Advisory Group, or CAG, is made up of 17 members representing a diverse group of stakeholders across the Southwest. It held its first meeting last January.

As it approaches its one-year anniversary, it is working on recommendations for the EPA on which strategy would work best.

The CAG along with another community-based body dubbed the Planning Group – which is primarily made up of San Juan County residents and focuses on needs and issues specific to Silverton – have already started brainstorming new ideas based on the EPA’s proposed strategies.

Churchwell called them hybrid ideas, since much of the discussions have been about taking the best from each strategy.

“I don’t feel we were hamstrung by the five ideas,” he added.

As the primary communication mechanism for residents trying to navigate the EPA hierarchy, the CAG has become an essential resource.

Anyone hoping to understand what the EPA is doing, voice concerns or catch up on the latest news can reach out to the group or attend one of its monthly meetings.

The CAG meets again at 3 p.m. Wed., Dec. 4, at the Durango Public Library to continue the discussion and hopefully come to a consensus on recommendations.

“What the group gets to do here is help the EPA make the decision,” Churchwell said. “We are the voice of our watershed.” n

Mountain Middle School creates ‘safe zone’ with cell phone ban

eachers at Mountain Middle School knew they had to do something. La Plata County had one of the highest teen suicide rates in Colorado and the school wanted to be a truly safe space.

One of the first things that came to mind – a cell phone ban. So, seven years ago, that’s what they did.

Head of School Shane Voss cites 24-hour cyberbullying, loss of sleep, round-the-clock social pressure to respond to Snapchats, Instagram posts and texts, and constantly comparing oneself to other students. Voss and other school staff say cell phones play an underestimated role in the current teen mental health crisis.

Eighth-graders Grace and Henry don’t know what school is like with phones.

Henry is on his phone about 10 minutes before he walks into school and then it’s off.

He said for the first half hour his phone might be in the back of his mind, “but once class starts then it’s just ‘kinda out the window and I’m not really thinking about it.”

When school’s out, he doesn’t really think about it either because he hasn’t seen in for the past six or seven hours. Grace doesn’t think about her phone at all during the day except toward the end, “thinking about like, did my mom send me a text to say where I’m going after school or something like that.”

The rules are simple: phones are to be in backpacks during the day. In 2016, the school tweaked the rule to say that phones must be in backpacks before students enter the building. There’s a warning the first

“What we’ve tried to do at our school is create a safe zone,” Voss said, “the eight hours of a school day when students don’t

have to worry about that added extra pressure.”

Before the policy was implemented, kids would come into the school, pull out their phones and look at Snapchat or Instagram as they waited for class to start.

“It was kind of eerie that they were all sitting next to each other but not talking to each other,” recalls Voss. “And now that 15-

minute time as they’re waiting for class, students are … talking to teachers and they’re talking to each other.”

If parents have an emergency and need to reach their children, they can call the front office and every classroom has a phone. “But (parents) should not be texting their student during the school day and distracting them,” Voss said. 4

Voss said parents needed to be educated about the impacts of cell phones on the adolescent brain. Some studies point to a correlation between high social media use and anxiety and depression. The school invited parents throughout Durango to attend a screening of the documentary “Screenagers,” which explores the impact of screens on kids’ brains. A second event featured a showing of “Angst,” which documents heightened levels of anxiety in today’s youth.

Parents, however, can also be part of the problem. Cell phone behavior is learned, Voss said. So the community discussions emphasized the importance of not using the cell phone while driving or during family dinners or when talking with children.

“Parents need to model appropriate usage,” he said. “We’re getting our kids ready for the world of work and you’re present, you’re focused, you’re not checked out and you’re not on social media when you’re in a business meeting.”

Voss said when he walks into a school without a cell phone ban, the difference is palpable. Students are walking around with their heads down, on their phones.

“It’s kind of like the zombie apocalypse and you have all these kids in the hallways not talking to each other. It’s just a very different vibe.”

The school tries to teach the skill of being “indistractible,” focusing students on one skill, one concept or one conversation at a time. It’s not an easy task when many students attempt to do homework, listen to music, text and keep an eye on Netflix at the same time. Voss credits the cell phonefree environment as a significant factor in

the school’s upward trajectory. In the school’s first two years, it struggled academically. But for the past several years it has attained Colorado’s highest performance rating.

In addition, in advisories (homerooms), students learn social and emotional skills, dive into the symptoms of anxiety and learn coping skills. Police officers talk to the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders about the legal ramifications of using cell phones improperly.

Voss believes schools should be teaching students how to use technology appropriately and teach them that it can play a role in teen anxiety and depression. “I do think the cell phone piece is a big part of why students don’t know how to communicate well face to face,” he said, Ninety-five percent of teens have access to a smartphone, and many Colorado school officials say it’s impossible to monitor them. Voss counts off the excuses he’s heard for why schools can’t implement bans. One is that there aren’t enough Chromebooks for each student, so teachers rely on phones for internet access. Voss believes that technology needs to be prioritized in the budget so classrooms don’t have to rely on phones. He also believes administrators fear parent and student pushback. “It’s kind of like a digital umbilical cord for parents and students,” he said. “I can’t tell you how many schools I visit and they say, ‘Man, I wish we could do that, but we don’t have the courage.’”

But Voss believes the current mental health crisis among youth means schools need to think hard about what’s best for

Henry said kids do complain about the ban. Most of the complaining is at the beginning of the year, he said – kids are coming off a summer gorge-fest.

“Everybody said like, ‘Oh, I really, really wish I can be on my phone.’ But I think

subconsciously everybody realized that it’s good for them, but like nobody really realizes it. Nobody thinks, ‘Wow, this is nice. New wave Studio Soma offers Gyrotonics, the latest way to move and groove

urango now has its very own spot to gets its Gyrotonics on. No, we’re not talking sauceslathered, meat-filled pitas or trendy cocktails.

We’re talking the latest in fitness, mobility and mindfulness all rolled into one – as if yoga and Pilates had a 3-D love child.

Tucked into an airy and light-filled studio on Highway 3, Studio Soma offers Gyrotonics (pronounced with a hard “g” and “y,” rhymes with pyro, for lack of a better comparison), its mat- and chair-based sister, Gyrokinesis, as well as standard Pilates.

“Pilates and Gyrotonics have a lot of similarities, but they are totally different systems by totally different people,” Soma co-owner Jen Painter said.

While most of us are somewhat familiar with the story of Joseph Pilates, the creator of Gyrotonics is perhaps lesser known. It was invented by Juliu Horvath, a Romanian-born ethnic Hungarian who escaped the former Soviet Union and immigrated to the United States in the 1970s. After scraping by in the Big Apple doing odd jobs, the former principal for the Romanian National Ballet landed a spot with the Houston Ballet.

However, he was soon sidelined with a ruptured Achilles, which sent him on a health quest. What ensued was an intense study of yoga and meditation – and the seeds of Gyrotonics were born.

Although his methods were originally targeted at dancers, he expanded the scope to appeal to all people, incorporating principles from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and t’ai chi.

“Gyrotonics is not rigid, it’s very fluid, it’s very breath-oriented and spiraling. It allows the body to get supple and elongated,” explains Painter, a former professional dancer in New York City who now dances with 20 Moons Dance Co., as she leads me to the “tower” during a recent session.

It may sound intimidating, but the tower is simply a wooden station with a seat and series of pullies, handles and circular, uh, spinamajigs, that use mild resistance to help support, stretch and strengthen muscles.

For a Pilates drop-out such as myself, it may seem a bit foreign, but if it’s good enough for Lady Gaga, one of its avowed adherents, it’s good enough for me.

I take a seat and close my eyes. Painter tells me to breathe through my nose and exhale through my mouth. So far so good. Then we go over a series of cat/cow like motions, except in Gyrotonics, they’re called “arcing” and “curling.”

“It’s really about getting the body moving with the breath,” Painter explains. “It’s very much based on spinal movement, making sure all your vertebrae can move in all the ways they were designed to. Not everyone is familiar with all these ways to move their spine.”

Myself included, as she works to wake up a few

slumbering lumbars. With the basics down, and all vertebrae at attention, we move onto storming the tower, which proves much harder than it seems. See, once the circular movements are incorporated with 3-D motion of the spine, keeping the shoulders down, pelvis tucked, spine tall “like a circular coil” – don’t forget to move with the breathe – well, things get complicated.

Sort of like trying to pat your head and rub your stomach all at the same time.

It may look easy, but Gyrotonics is something that requires practice, skill, grace and focus. You may not end up in a pool of sweat or panting like a hyena at the end, but those synapses and muscle fibers are firing just the same.

“It’s not just doing the motions,” said Painter, who has been instructing since 2004. “It’s really having you be present in what you’re doing.”

Ah mindfulness, that 21st century buzz word, something we all could stand to have a little more of in this screen-obsessed world. Speaking of which, the dreaded screen neck is just one of the things Gryotonics purports to help. Painter said it can benefit everyone from aging Boomers or folks coming off an injury to elite athletes or just a regular desk jockey looking to complement his or her existing fitness routine.

“I am more flexible and stronger and I can heal faster from little injuries now than when I was in my twenties,” said Painter, 40. “It has really helped 4

my system by making me stronger and more resilient.”

Because, as she explains it, to know one’s body is to harness its deepest powers: coordination, suppleness, long and lithe muscles, endorphins and all that other good stuff that comes from a great workout.

But first, it starts with a question.

“How are you feeling?” she asks me midway through our session.

I stare blankly, really quite oblivious to everything from the neck down. Apparently, this is common for newbies – tapping into the mystical mind-body connection is something that comes with time.

“It takes a while to build the awareness,” she said.

But I do know that despite the intense concentration that comes with trying to pilot two pulley-tethered legs from spasmodically herky-jerkying – while attempting to wrangle the ever-elusive breathe – I feel strangely relaxed. Almost as if I have tapped into that old familiar swimmer’s groove. Which isn’t by accident.

Painter said Gyrotonics incorporates much of the same, fluid motions as swimming or rowing – two more of Horvath’s passions. In fact, many of the movements borrow names from these disciplines, like the “breast stroke” and the “canoe,” which she demonstrates with the grace of a dancer (which she is.)

But if you’re not a dancer, or Lady Gaga, don’t worry.

As Painter said, the method is all based on the same simple moves and builds from there. Sessions can be tailored to the individual.

“Whether you have an athletic focus or a therapeutic focus, you can work in the direction you want to go,” she said. It can be especially helpful for those who harbor ghosts of injuries past. “If you’ve had an injury for a while and have been moving in a certain way, your body has all those compensatory patterns, and even if that heals, your body still hangs onto that.”

Back at the tower, she tells me to squeeze my abs like a tube of toothpaste and envision my spine rotating like a chicken on a rotisserie – both imagery I can relate to – and the light goes off. Or at least I have a better understanding of the movements (and find myself suddenly hungry.)

For Painter, the light and the hunger started the first time she tried Gyrotonics in 2003. “It was the only exercise other than dance that made me feel like I was dancing – the rhythm, fluidity. I thought, ‘This is how my body needs to move.’”

She said she has clients who come in once or twice a week to those who come in every day. She and Soma co-owner Katie Clancy, who is a Pilates instructor, see their studio as the antidote, if not a nice complement, to the hard-charging, uber-competitive fitness junkie Durango seems to have in such high supply. (Yes, I’m looking at you trail runners, mountain bikers, cross fitters and other exercise freaks.)

“There’s nothing like this in Durango,” said Clancy. “We really try to slow down and give people the ability to know their bodies.”

Which isn’t to say mastering Gyrotonics isn’t every bit as challenging as mastering, say, that overhead squat (sigh, some day.)

Adventures in crust avoidance

love pumpkin pie, but I hate making crust. And I will gladly spend more time not making a crust than I would have spent making it. I’ll make pumpkin souffle, pumpkin pudding cups or some other crust-free pumpkin-based alternative.

This quirky aversion has led me to some delicious, non-crusty places I can’t wait to show you.

But first, a reminder that pumpkin is just one type of winter squash, of which there are many types that make great pie. When I say “pumpkin” I mean pie squash.

In fact, the “pumpkin” in most cans of pumpkin pie filling is actually a butternut squash variety called Dickinson.

As for that crust, we are most definitely not going to make. And, it turns out that history is on our side. At the alleged first Thanksgiving feast, nobody – immigrant or local alike – had access to flour, butter or an oven.

But while our nation’s inaugural harvest party was a crust-free affair, squash were a staple for the Wampanoag tribe that mixed with the Pilgrims and an important part of surviving winter. At that first supper of our nation, some historians speculate that a proto-pie, baked in an earthen pit, may have consisted of a hollowed-out pumpkin filled with a honey-sweetened egg custard.

I know from experience, however, that if you fill a whole pumpkin with custard and bake it, by the time all of that custard cooks and expands, the container will have become too soft to hold the filling. But half a squash, filled with custard and baked like a pie, cooks to-

gether in harmony with the filling.

It’s a beautiful, decadent combination. The baked flesh has its own custard-like texture, pulls cleanly from the hard skin, and is easy to eat with the extra-rich filling.

But a friend, trying to be helpful, burst my bubble with a pragmatic question. “Does a soft pumpkin border truly impart the same satisfaction as a flaky, buttery crust?”

Well, he had a point, which I addressed in a way that allowed me to retain my dignity & values. I’m not usually an Oreo guy, but I’m so much less of a crust guy that I made an exception, because I had this crazy idea that I was pretty sure would work. I bought some Oreos & used them to line the inside of a half-pumpkin. Then I added custard mix, & baked it.

The improvement was immediately obvious. The Oreos formed a pleasing, cakey layer between custard and squash, and their dark chocolate flavor formed a lovely complement to the pumpkin and custard. Because Oreos are so sweet, I skipped the sugar in the pie filling, and that deconstruction worked perfectly.

Eager to explore the possibilities, I then tiled the inside of a pie pan with yet more Oreos, patching the gaps between the discs with crumbled pieces, and filled it with pumpkin pie filling. When baked, the Oreos made it easy to cut and serve the filling, and I was happy to have it.

And you are welcome to try it. Just don’t call it a crust.

Here is a recipe for a sturdy, custardy pumpkin pie filling that will work with whichever choose-your-owncrust-adventure you go with.

Pumpkin Pie, with choice of non-crust 4 eggs

1 cup heavy cream 1 ½ cups milk ¼ tsp salt 2 teaspoon vanilla 2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spices ⅓ cup sugar (If baking in a pumpkin, use less sugar. If using Oreos, omit the sugar) 2 cups pumpkin flesh Combine all ingredients in a blender for about 30 seconds, until completely homogenized.

Pour into the crust of your choice and bake for 45-60 minutes at 400 degrees, until it puffs up and starts to crack and brown on top. Remove from the heat and allow to cool and settle. Serve at room temperature.

Pumpkin Flesh Crust 1 pie pumpkin or other suitable squash ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spices Cut a pumpkin around the equator into two equal sized bowls. With a strong spoon, scrape out all of the loose, stringy flesh and seeds from both halves, so the meat is clean and ready to eat. (Save the seeds and bake them, with salt and a little oil, along with the pies.) Use a vegetable peeler to trim and tidy the rim. The bottom half of a pie pumpkin sits comfortably on a flat surface, and makes a better pie holder than the upper part. So I prefer to bake the upper part unfilled, for use in the next batch of pumpkin pie filling.

Sprinkle the bottom half with pie spices, pour in the custard up to the rim and place in a baking dish or on a cookie sheet. Bake for about an hour, keeping an eye on the custard. It will swell and probably start to crack. When the top starts to brown, and the custard moves more like a solid than a liquid, remove from the oven and cool.

Oreo Crust Oreos (or store brand sandwich cookies) Place the Oreos along the inside of a pie pan or pumpkin. First line the bottom, then the side of the baking pan or pumpkin with more Oreos. If you wish, fill in the gaps between Oreos with crumbled Oreos. Make sure some edges protrude above the rim.

Fill with custard and bake as above. n

Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, aka Jay & Silent Bob, return to the Community Concert Hall tonight (Thurs., Nov. 21) as part of their Reboot Roadshow tour promoting their latest film.

Mewes and Smith are the legendary stoner icons who first hit the screen in the 1994 underground hit, “Clerks,” which was directed and written by Smith. Although silent in the movies, Smith is anything but in real life. Since “Clerks,” he has written and directed a string of hits, including “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy,” “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.”

Smith (@thatkevinsmith) – back from a near-fatal heart attack last year and 58 pounds lighter – also is known for his TV shows, live performances and popular podcasts.

Durango audiences will get to see the duo’s new movie, “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot,” which features cameos from such Hollywood stars as Chris Hemsworth, Shannon Elizabeth, Rosario Dawson, James Van Der Beek, Tommy Chong, Craig Robinson and more. The plot follows the clueless duo as they discover that Hollywood is rebooting an old movie based on them and embark on a crosscountry mission to stop it. Dear Rachel, Apparently we’re still announcing a Sexiest Man Alive every year? First of all, I don’t think sexy has a one-year term limit. I mean, Harrison Ford is still alive, am I right? (High five!) Beyond that, it just seems degrading. It shouldn’t be any more OK to objectify a man than it is a woman.

I’ve never read the Sexiest Man articles, so maybe they go into philanthropy and crap like that? But even then, it’s like putting a talent component in the Miss Universe swimsuit competition. We all know what it’s all about.

by Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19): “Beware of what disturbs the heart,” Ibn Mas’ud, a companion of the prophet Mohammed, said. “If something unsettles your heart, then abandon it.” My wise Aries friend Artemisia has a different perspective. She advises, “Pay close attention to what disturbs the heart. Whatever has the power to unsettle your heart will show you a key lesson you must learn, a crucial task you’d be smart to undertake.”

Here’s my synthesis of Ibn Mas’ud and Artemisia: Do your very best to fix the problem revealed by your unsettled heart.

Learn all you can in the process. Then, even if the fix isn’t totally perfect, move on. Graduate from the problem for good.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Taurus social critic Bertrand Russell won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950. He’s regarded as the founder of analytic philosophy and one of the 20th century’s premier intellectuals. But he went through a rough patch in 1940. He was adjudged “morally unfit” to accept his appointment as a professor at the City College of New York. The lawsuit that banned him from the job described him as being “libidinous, lustful, aphrodisiac and irreverent.” Why? Simply because of his liberated opinions about sexuality, which he had conscientiously articulated in his book Marriage and Morals. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): Sagittarian performance artist Marina Abramović observes that Muhammad, Buddha, Jesus and Moses “all went to the desert as nobodies and came back as somebodies.” She herself spent a year in Australia’s Great Sandy Desert near Lake Disappointment, leading her to exclaim that the desert is “the most incredible place, because there is nothing there except yourself, and yourself is a big deal.”
