*GO FOR LAUNCH! (Grades 8-12) Southwest Regional Library Wednesday - Friday, Aug. 16 - 18 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Go For Launch! returns to Durham County Library. During this three-day program, teens work with and learn from an astronaut, a former NASA flight controller and other professionals in the space and technology industries. Through hands-on activities and presentations, students learn about human spaceflight and careers in the space industry. Students work in groups to develop the idea for a space experiment, which they will present to a panel of judges. A winner will be chosen, and that winner will compete with winning experiments from other Go For Launch! events to have their experiment launched to the International Space Station! For more information and to register, visit DurhamCountyLibrary.org/goforlaunch. *TEEN LOCK-IN (Teens) East Regional Library Friday, Jul. 28 6 - 10 p.m. Join us for the fourth annual Teen Lock-In at East Regional Library. There will be aerial dancers, airbrush tattoos, pizza and games! Registration is required. Please contact your teen librarian for more information. Describe how you would maintain it (refilling books, promoting and caring for it) and how this would connect people in your community to one another and to Durham County Library. The library will provide the tie-dye, you bring white materials to be tie-dyed. For example, you might bring T-shirts, socks or baby clothes. This program will be messy, so dress accordingly. You must register to participate. For children and teens, ages 8 and up!
DIY FORTUNE TELLING (Ages 12-18) Thursday, Jul. 20 1:30 - 3 p.m. Is your future written in the stars or tea leaves or on the lines of your palm? Learn about the history behind fortune telling and practice some yourself! As Professor Trelawney would say, “Broaden your minds. Use your inner eye to see the future!” *HARRY POTTER READ IN (Teens, All Ages) Jul. 24, 25, 27, 31 6:30 - 8 p.m. Bring Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to life! Read aloud as a character of your choosing. You don’t have to read in a British accent unless you want to. Give ideas and suggestions for YA literature and future programming at the library. SPLIT FOCUS: PHOTOGRAPHY CLUBS** (Ages 14-19) Thursdays, Jun. 1, 29 5 - 6 p.m. Join us as we explore the world around us through camera and lens. Each month, this primarily student led program will focus on different topics and how they can be represented and expressed through film. Cameras are provided!
BUILD A BETTER WORLD: NC ZOO: ANIMAL ARCHITECTS** Tuesday, Jun. 20 1 - 2 p.m. The NC Zoo is coming to the MakerLab! Animals can be amazing architects! Through animal artifacts, lots of visuals and live animals, learn some of the creative ways animals build their homes, nests or community housing.
EXPLORING ANIMAL TRACKS AND SIGNS WITH THE NC MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCES** Saturday, Jun. 10 1 - 2 p.m. Join us as we welcome the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences to the MakerLab! Learn to use your senses to interpret different clues left behind by animals. Then, meet some of the live animals you might encounter in your own backyard.
*MAKERLAB: GO GREEN SERIES, FUEL CELL CAR Wednesday, Jun. 21 2 p.m. Have you ever wanted to build a small vehicle that’s powered by water? Join us as we build small cars powered by Hydrogen Fuel Cells.
