Come see this costumed re-creation of a woman who started out in a sod roof house with dirt floors and became the owner of a cattle empire extending from Texas to neighboring states. Jones. The Emigrants by W.G. Sebald is the inspiration for one of Jones’ performances, the ADF-commissioned Analogy/Ambros: The Emigrant. The novel is described by The New York Times book reviewer Larry Wolff as “a profound and original work of fiction, The Emigrants pursues the stories of four people as they move from land to land—and, above all, as they move through history” (March 30, 1997). Started in the 1950s, the Ar-Razzaq Islamic Center, formerly Muhammad’s Mosque #34, is one of the oldest Muslim communities in North Carolina. WORLD WAR I AND DURHAM’S SISTER CITIES Sunday, Aug. 20, 3 p.m. South Regional Join us to learn how all of Durham’s Sister Cities, except Arusha, fought with the Allied Powers against Germany and Austria during World War I. From Durham, England’s famous Light Infantry to naval escorts provided by Toyama, Japan, each city took part in the war effort. Arusha, now in Tanzania, was involved as part of German-occupied East Africa.

FRANK HYMAN: THE NEO-CONFEDERATES DON’T KNOW THEIR HISTORY Saturday, Sep. 9, 2 p.m. North Regional Frank Hyman’s essay “The Confederacy Was a Con Job on White People and Still Is” can be found online in over a dozen newspapers. Did you also know that a majority of Tarheels voted against secession? Hyman asserts that while neo-Confederates like Rep. Larry Pittman are gaining power, they don’t know their history. As part of the discussion, Hyman will offer strategies for countering "alternative facts." Hyman lives in Durham, where he has held two local elected offices. Warren Join Molly Boarati, Assistant Curator from the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, for a discussion and slide lecture on The Medici’s Painter: Carlo Dolci and 17th Century Florence. This is the first exhibition in the United States devoted to the luminous and meticulously rendered paintings of Italian artist Carlo Dolci (1616–1687). FAMILY YOGA Mondays, starting Sep. 11, 1:30 p.m. This yoga class welcomes all bodies and all levels of experience. We designed this time to practice yoga together in an accepting and non-judgmental atmosphere. Mats will not be provided. Please bring your own mat if you have one. Children are welcome.
