Water – Don’t waste a drop
Sustainable water use in the office
Francis Binney Environmental Officer, RBC Wealth Management
Water – Why Worry? › Jersey Water predicts that as an island we are likely to see significant water shortages within the next 25 years: – Demand is likely to increase by up to 25% – While supply is predicted to decrease by 11%
› Rainfall patterns are also changing to a more pronounced drought and flood model. – Intense dry spells harden the ground – Heavy rains wash over land and into storm drains
Do we really use that much? › Average water consumption is 150 litres / day. – Around 30 litres of that is in the office.
› At RBC WM in 2008 each member of staff used an average of 7.5 metric tonnes of water. – For the office this adds up to over 7000 tonnes in a single year.
› That’s roughly three Olympic swimming pools down our drains each year.
How & where we can make a difference
Average UK office water use
Areas of focus › › › › › ›
Kitchens Toilets Showers Business operations Education & Awareness Rainwater harvesting & Flood control
Office Kitchens › Fitting spray taps – traditional taps use up to nine litres / min › Is it better to bin or to wash?
› A dripping tap can waste 5000 litres of water a year › What does bottled water in your boardroom say about you?
Showers
› Aerating show heads can reduce water use by up to 80% without a loss in pressure.
› Shower timers give people and target length of time for their shower to try and beat after cycling to work
Toilets › Have you ever used a waterless urinal? › Flush-wiser reduces water use by up to 90% › Most current cisterns use 50 – 70% less water than those installed 10 years or more ago, is it time you updated? › As well as saving water senor taps have hygiene benefits
Business operations Your car doesn’t need to bathe in drinking water › Rainwater collected from your office roof can be used for several things: – – – –
Washing your vehicle fleet Cleaning pavements, courtyards and building entrances Washing windows Watering plants
› For real innovation why not be the first office in Jersey to have a duel water system using rainwater to flush toilets?
Education and Awareness › Technology isn’t the solution – your staff are. – Measure consumption from your bill – Set targets 4.4 m3 / FTE / Year by 2015 – Run competitions between departments – Water champions in each departments – Report on progress and reward success
