When Peter Messervy-Gross and Mark Liddiard from Jersey set off to remote Mongolia to cross a frozen lake by foot, it was set to be an ultra-challenge whilst also raising funds for Durrell.

With expected temperatures below -40 degrees Celsius, they had trained for months and bought the best equipment for the conditions. However, unfortunately for Peter, during the plane journey to the start line, his bag failed to arrive and with size 13 feet it meant that no replacement kit could be found. He had no choice but to complete the trek in his leather brogues and jeans to the awe, astonishment and amusement of his fellow competitors. Reported in the national newspapers, the story grabbed heroic headlines and was certainly testament to his true determination.
