SERBIA FACT

IN AND FIGURES

LAND COLOURED WITH LIFE Officially known as the Republic of Serbia, the country is located in the central and southeastern part of Europe. It covers the central part of the Balkans and the southern part of the Pannonian Plain, which make the must see Serbia places exceptionally diverse as far as natural wonders are concerned. Situated amidst Bulgaria and Romania to its east, Hungary to its north, Montenegro, Herzegovina, Bosnia and Croatia to its west and Albania and the Republic of Macedonia to its south, the country welcomes you to a world with wonderful panoramic scenery, cultural and historical monuments, fishing areas, hunting grounds and curative spas. ‘Wondrous’ is the word that best describes Serbia. If you are tired of exploring the typical flora and fauna of the forests, the tranquil countrysides then the must see places in Serbia are spots you should consider visiting. The traditional touch of the cities added to the lustful party nights make Serbia an amazing mixture of modernism and ethnicity. To discover the quintessential Serbian aura, visit the capital city Belgrade to figure out the profound beauty of the architectures in this city. If you have plans to visit this city, don’t miss the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Sava, one of the most renowned orthodox churches in the country. Other than the spectacular semblance of this church, you can even wander around the lush green lawns and gaze at the architectural marvels around it. If you are true art lover, then the country has various artistic relics as well.

WE NEVER SLEEP! In Serbia, every night is Friday night. There is no single day of the week in Serbia when you can’t have a night out and that holds true for all generations, for all lifestyles and musical tastes and for all available budgets. Everyone is ready to party at all the time, dance the night away, and go straight to work the next day. It’s really hard to resist the temptation when you know that on any given evening there are countless clubs out there full of young, gorgeous people having so much fun.

INTRESTING FACT ABOUT SERBIA Famous Serbian hospitality It is not only a word – according to the international polls, Serbs are statistically the most hospitable nation in the world. It is a custom of a vast legacy which can be traced to the ancient Slavic belief that a host would not gain any favour from the gods if he did not show hospitality to a guest. Nikola Tesla one of the most brilliant mind in the history of men was a Serbian. Nikola Tesla Museum is located in the central area of Belgrade. The material for the Museum arrived in Belgrade according to the decision of the American court, which declared Mr. Sava Kosanović, Tesla’s nephew, for the only rightful heir.It is the only museum in the world which preserves the original and personal inheritance of Nikola Tesla.

Serbia has many impressive natural attractions such as the Prerasts of Vratna, Europe’s tallest stone gates. There are 3 of them – the Dry Prerast, the Big Prerast and the Little Prerast which, being 34 metres high, 30 metres long, and 15 metres wide, is actually the tallest one.

Surnames

Most of Serbian last names end on „ić“. This suffix can be compared with Irish prefix „O’“, Nordic suffix „son“ or „dotir“, Hingarian „fi“, Bulgarian „ev/a“ or „ov/a“, Turkish „oglu“ and can be translated as „the offspring“, and is a genuine Serbian patronymic. Hence, Serbian last names remain always the same both for sons and daughters.

SERBIAN CUSINE Serbian traditional cuisine contains a myriad of tastes and smells, much owing to the mixture of influences of various peoples who were just passing through or were living in this region. As is the case with the culture in general, this fusion of different influences resulted in originality, so that today a rich Serbian table offers unforgettable tastes that can only be enjoyed in Serbia. Serbian cuisine is characterized by highly diverse, solid and spicy food, which can be roughly described as a mixture of Greek, Bulgarian, Turkish and Hungarian cuisine. The use of meat, dough, vegetables and dairy products is predominant in it.

Serbian specialties you have to taste are: burek, gibanica, grilled meat, roast, Karađorđeva steak, cabbage rolls, goulash, đuveč (a type of a stew), moussaka, mućkalica (a mixture of different types of meat and vegetables in a form of a stew), čvarci (similar to pork rinds), kajmak (milk cream), pršuta (drycured ham, similar to Prosciutto).

THE SPIRIT OF SERBIA Rakija is the national drink of Serbia. This distilled spirit is made most commonly from plums (šljivovica) or grapes (lozovača), but Serbs have been known to make rakija out of anything: ‘fancy’ flavours include quince (dunja), apricot (kajsija) and pear (kruška), though you may encounter walnut (orahovača), herbs (stomaklija) or the outrageously sinful medovača, made with honey. Rakija is a type of brandy, but don’t be fooled: this is not your grandpa’s cheeky little nightcap. The name originates from an Arabic word for ‘sweat’, which you will do – in addition to falling down and speaking in tongues – if you drink enough of it. And ‘enough’ means one shot.

If you type in “kafana” in Wikipedia, trying to find out what the Serbs are constantly talking about, you will get a modest explanation that kafana is ‘a distinct type of local bistro which primarily serves alcoholic beverages and coffee (and occasionally light snacks), and which sometimes also has a live band. In the same kafana you can start the day with coffee and rakija, then go have lunch there, and in the evening you can sit in the same kafana, and have a good time drinking and enjoying old folk music until the wee hours of the morning.

One million

journey imPRESSIONS

BELGRADE One of the oldest cities in Europe and the only one built on the confluence of two rivers, Belgrade is the city that never sleeps and the symbol of great nightlife. The capital of Serbia, Belgrade, is known as “the city that never sleeps”. Floating clubs on its rivers have become synonyms for great parties and neverending fun, and Skadarlija, the bohemian street, for a place where music and singing can be heard until dawn. And yet, Belgrade is one of the oldest cities in Europe. This “white city” is the only capital built at the confluence of two big rivers – the Danube and the Sava. Belgrade is a modern european city with population of about 1.7 million people. It is an administrative, political and cultural center of the country. The sessions of Serbian parliament and government are being held in Belgrade, and the office of the President is also in it. The buildings that host these institutions are themselves monuments of great cultural importance and therefore a part of every visitor’s itinerary.

NOVI SAD During the ages, that settlement grew into one of the most beautiful cities in this part of Europe – Novi Sad, known also as “the Serbian Athens” due to its remarkable culture and history. According to this legend, the city has been founded by exactly 12 soldiers and 20 craftsmen (bakers, butchers and others). Novi Sad is nowadays a home of about 300.000 people of various ethnicities and the capital of autonomous province of Vojvodina. It was that diversity (cultural, ethnic, religious etc.) that has made tolerance and open-mindedness for new things and ideas the key features of the city. You are always welcome in Novi Sad, where friendly and hospitable locals will try to make each day you spend in their hometown unforgettable. Each summer, Petrovaradin fortress hosts the famous EXIT music festival. During those days, the entire city dances with the music of some of the world’s greatest bands performing on several stages all around the fortress. Each year, more than 150.000 young people from all over the world come to Novi Sad, in the first place to have great fun. KRAGUJEVAC Kragujevac (founded in 1476.) is the largest city of the Šumadija region and the administrative centre of Šumadija District. It is situated on the banks of the Lepenica River. NIS Birthplace of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great, the city of Niš still embodies the combination of exotic East and elegant West. Today a modern tourist center with museums and historical sites that are on european must see maps, Serbian city of Niš has been a gate connecting the East and the West ever since it was established. Even nowadays, driving down the roads through Niš is the shortest way to reach the Middle East from Europe, or cities like Sofia and Istanbul from Vienna, Budapest or Prague. This route has been called “Carigradski drum” (The Road to the Emperor’s city ie. Constantinople/Istanbul) since the Middle Ages. In its rich history, Niš was even the birthplace of a great emperor. There was always something magical about Niš. Exotic and mystical East and reserved but elegant West are nowhere so well reconciled as they are here. Modern day Niš is an important center in Serbia. With the population of more than 250.000 people, it is the third largest city in the country. Don’t miss talking with the people from Niš and experience the warmth and hospitality of the southerners.

SURGICAL SUTURING During your exchange, you will have opportunity to learn basic of suturing. The primary goal of suturing is to approximate (bring together the wound margins) and to eliminate dead space between wound walls and edges so that underlying tissues are held together. Healing can only occur properly if the two severed areas of tissue meet properly and remain intact. If dead space is not properly eliminated blood may pool in the wound leading to hematoma and consequently wound strength will be compromised, and thus the risk of infection will be increased. The secondary goal of suturing is minimizing scar tissue formation. Both proper healing and minimal scarring are achieved by accomplishing two main objectives.
