Virtual Reality Museum Graduation Project Year: Spring 2013 Site: Basmane, Izmir The location of the project, Basmane is mainly based on historical subjects and has many historical, urban and archaeological heritage preservation. The aim of the project is transmitting the immanent pattern of the city, which is connected with cultural, ecological and social parameters ,to the people who live or visit there. Existing form of human movement flow can not be seen but it exists. Virtual reality is the same, we can experience different environments through computer simulations in imagined world / real world. By that proposal the interiors start to be visible and experienced from the immanent pattern of the city. The interaction between human and information turns into virtual to physical. The main programme of the building is to be link between the immanent pattern of the site and people with the simulated virtual reality spaces. Also those simulated virtual reality spaces are archived. The movement flow is one of the principal for design process. And the bridge ,which extends to building site from Agora, establish a link between past, now, future and also with the people. In some cases the existing building’s roof turn into a slab of new proposal bridge.
The spaces are defined by people interactions. The identification of private and public space is mainly based on the people interactions. According to the priority of privacy and people interactions; the openings of the space are defined.

Solid cubes are represented the main spaces of each classification. Volumes of the cubes were defined by number of heritage preservation spaces of it’s classification. These diagrams were used as parameters both swarm intelligence and millipede.
seek points avoid points
According to the results of urban analysis, swarm simulations were applied and used for defining the boundaries. And that ground plan was assigned as FE mesh with the help of millipede (grasshopper plug-in), material assigned as concrete and thickness was 0,4m. The main spaces of each preservation category were assigned as a support religion. Because these spaces serve for decreasing the population density. The entrances were assigned as a load region because of the virtual load of movement and actual load of human. These all steps were applied for each heritage presevartion space. The deformation of the slab and the density of the stress lines were defined the volumes of the spaces.

seek points The seek points were defined by the age of the buildings and the building conditions. The grey colored roofs’ parts are the existing slabs which were turned into a proposal bridge’s slab. Locust gh were used for simulate swarm system. The series of rules were defined according to researches (people density, seek points and avoid points). The aim is to create a bridge which extends to Agora (historical site) and provides direct circulation between historical site and the building.

Two focal points were determined for each heritage preservation spaces category, intersection of those lines created the space boundaries and the number of spaces created the space volume of those specific virtual reality spaces; when 2 of lines were intersected, creates main space when 3 of lines were intersected, creates common space for each specified areas.
Swarm simulations were applied from each heritage preservation spaces on the site to their representative spaces on the building site. The intersection points of the lines were defined and the swarm simulations were applied again from these intersection points. By taking section of these forms, spaces of project were created.

Crystal Bridge Material Interactions Year: Spring 2013 Site: Izmir University of Economics The purpose of the project is to investigate the material behavior and compute them to get aid system of design according to material interactions. Water and rock salt were blended until the water was saturated. As the water evaporates, salt mineral aggregates on the wire netting and on the string. The experiments were done in 3 different stages. As a result of those observations; the crystallization of salt have a particular order and the transformation of salt is programmable substances. The bridge is proposal for crossing over to library from fine art faculty. The project leaded by Orkun Beydagı.

Post-Industrial Facility Architectural Design 401 Year: Fall 2012 Site: HalkapÄąnar, Izmir The site of the project has two important features. The first one, HalkapÄąnar is surrounded by industrial district and according to their production, they have different kind of waste materials. Steel has the biggest share of waste materials. According to site analysis; the site has too much potential for working but there is a lack of living spaces. So the building combines two functions which are post industrial production and live-work space. The aim of the building programme is to recycle waste steel materials of the site and production from these materials. There are 5 steps to ferrous material recycling; collecting, separation, shredding, melting and fabrication. According to programme distribution, weiare-phelan tessellation is applied with 3 different types of polyhedra. The tessellation is deformed by site analysis and environmental conditions.

Identification of the existing industries in the field and the major waste materials. According to these identifications; the site of the building is defined.

Glass Art Academy Architectural Design 301 Year: Fall 2011 Site: Güzelbahçe, Izmir The Glass Art Academy is designed for teaching how to shape glass. The building has four kind of users; virtuoso, apprentices, novices and guests. Virtuoso, apprentices and novices are permanent users which use the building for living and working. These users’ spaces are individually divided from each others and there are common spaces for all habitants. The ground floor is for common spaces, the first floor is for more private spaces of permanent users. The conceptual idea is mystery, limitation and hide/seek which comes from the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. The idea of mystery actually is related with our standpoint. In some cases, if people change where they stand, the mystery can solve. The interior spaces are related with this idea. If the visitor change his/her standpoint, he/she can see the spaces (mystery).

fabric printing
The design process is based on overlapping and highlighting three paintings. Then these overlapped and highlighted shapes are organized as a collage. The collage is printed on fabric and used for space creating and the shapes of collage are used for sectional process. Also the form of the project is created with folding technique of fabric printing.

The Academy of Pattern Architectural Design 302 Year: Spring 2012 Site: Bayraklı, Izmir The site of the project Bayraklı has identifying characteristics like up-down and public-private relations. And the most of the habitants of Bayraklı have low income. These factors determine the people’s daily activities. The aim of the project is to socialize women and involve them in daily life. The users of the building are unemployed housewives and children. The Academy of Pattern purposes various activities to improve themselves in art and contribute to household income. The project process began with analyzing the song of Joy Division “Transmission”. Then angular lines are turned into curvilinear lines with keeping the same inflection points. By folding these lines, form finding process is done. The focus point of the project is to use three different materials; concrete, glass and steel. The glass facade is supported by steel construction and created by overlapping the lines of the song analysis. The curvilinear walls are designed for pulling the daylight into the interior space.

PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT
The main purpose of the workshop is to explore the different usage and the detail of the glass material in the structures. The aim is to create a structural solution and to give a second identity to the current facade’s of Fine Art Faculty. The most significant feature of the glass is providing transparency. By layering different level heights of glass panels, degree of transparency is provided. Steel structures which is extended from the existing facade of the building turns into a cantilever of the entrance by this means, visual connection continuity is achieved. 1/2 and 1/20 scale models were constructed and exhibited in the Izmir University of Economics Fine Art Faculty. The workshop leaded by Tim Macfarlane.

Waffle Seat Digital Based Design Year: Spring 2012 Site: Izmir University of Economics The main purpose of this project is using the computational tools to design an organic form chair. A series of 8X and 14Y struts were created by using grasshopper plug-in (waffle structure definition). The end notches were defined by considering the material thickness. Whole manufacturing process were done by group work. 1/1 scale was constructed out of mdf and exhibited in Graduation Exhibition of Ä°zmir University of Economics 2012. The project leaded by Gudjon Thor Endersson.

“Architecture, as a material practice, attains social, cultural and ecological relevance through the articulation of material arrangements and structures. Thus the way we conceptualize these material interventions and, in this context particularly the technology that enables their construction, presents a fundamental aspect in how we (re)think architecture.“ Achim Menges
