This document shows a collection of works produced by the first year students of the Middle East Technical University- City and Regional Planning Department. The basic design studio offered a new way of thinking to the students through the use of simple and defined mediums such as lines, planes and a few colors in the beginning. This allowed students to comprehend what figure is, what ground is, where an object should stand in a defined frame, how a composition can be created in accordance with a given problem. As we approached the end of the first semester, the third dimension was introduced. This was followed by a detailed exploration of the third dimension in a real-life spatial context. In the second semester, the city of Hattusa and its genius locus welcomed the students. The problem now was to imagine a human settlement by paying attention to the unique geomorphologic elements and the spirit of this archaic metropolis by merging all the basic design principles together.
