These photographs were taken on the land (St. Kilda) of the Yalukit Willam people and we wish to acknowledge them as Traditional Owners. We would also like to pay our respects to their Elders, both past and present, and the Elders from other communities.

LOUIS

The ticket cost me 10 pounds. It was 1967. The ship arrived just over there in Port Melbourne, do you see it? I walk there every morning. 6:30. I used to swim very far, but I can’t do it anymore. I had a stoke 10 years ago, and it sort of paralized me. I’m nearly 78, you know. I’ve been everywhere. Three years in Morocco, one year in Isreal... I married a girl in Bali. I’ve been on safari’s in Africa, in the army in France, and I almost married another girl in Japan. Now I just walk. Its a good life.

LUKE

I came to Australia yesterday. I used to have an apartment in a city, but I sold it and bought a bus. Now, wherever I am is home. I’ve spent a lot of time roaming the forests. I like being able to drive and walk for hours without running into people.I might go visit my mother. She lives in Western Australia somewhere. I haven’t seen her in years. She had a lot of problems with alcohol and stuff, and didn’t want much to do with us, I guess. I saw this guy camping on the beach before, so now I’m gonna bring him these bananas. I just want to get his perspective on things.

CAITLIN

There’s this one girl on my corner – she’s so lovely. She always has a pony tail and dresses nicer. Covered, you know? She always says hello. We will have little conversations when I go off to work before dawn. She’ll comment on how I’m up so early, and I’ll say “and you’ve been out here all night! You must be so cold! Then we wish each other a good day. She doesn’t even have a pimp. Not all of them do. Living here has made me more understanding of their situation, I think. They’re just normal people.

‘This kippah is embroidered with the white logo of the Carlton Football Club (a Melbourne based club part of the Australian Football League). Such kippahs with AFL logos are manufactured and exported from Israel. A kippah, also called a yarmulke or skull cap, is a head covering worn by religious Jewish men for many reasons, one being that it is a sign of respect for God.’ (Jewish Museum of Australia, 2017)
