What are the most used and abused drugs at American colleges and universities? • While alcohol is the most commonly used legal drug at colleges (even though it is mostly used by underage students) the most common illicit drugs are as follows: • Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug, nearly 50 percent of college students have admitted to using the drug at least once. 35 percent admit to have used it in the last year, and about 20 percent of college students use the drug regularly. • MDMA (Ecstasy) is the next most commonly used drug at colleges and universities. However a far less percent of students use it, only about 13 percent of students have ever used it. This drug is generally used at “raves” or dance parties and is often associated with severe dehydration. • Many other illicit drugs such as cocaine, rohypnol/gnl, and methamphetamines, are abused at the colleges and university. However, these drugs are all under five percent in terms of abuse.
