A Counselor with Heart DVC counseling faculty and transfer coordinator, Tina Wade, counsels students on how to dream big in the classroom and get prepared for the future.
What inspires Tina the most: “seeing students finally achieve the educational goals and dreams they set for themselves. And helping students who didn’t think they would ever belong on a college campus or think they would be able to finish!”
Teaching and supporting transfer students are at the heart of Wade’s mission to support those who lack resources, information, and opportunities in higher education. “I’ve enjoyed serving students since I was a student at UCSD over 10 years ago” Wade said. Her drive to help students has only grown stronger. While working in social services, Wade realized the importance of community college as the starting and launching points for so many walks of life. “I soon realized their important role as bridging the gap for people to move into better paying careers, advanced degrees, or both” she said. “DVC in particular had a strong reputation as a transfer institution to notable universities. Being invited to join that kind of team with such high standards for excellence and student success was a professional dream come true,” Wade added. Wade coordinates transfer services to California State Universities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, as well as a score of private universities in California and even fully online universities. What inspires her the most is “seeing students finally achieve the educational goals and dreams they set for themselves. And helping students who didn’t think they would ever belong on a college campus or think they would be able to finish!”
SRC Staff Hightlight
When Isabella Mariano decided to go back to school at DVC to explore her love of reading with a few English class, she never imagined that today she’d have a master’s degree in history. What began as fun classes such as English, political science and anthropology ultimately turned into an associate in arts in history for transfer degree. After DVC, Mariano transferred to UC Berkeley where she completed a bachelor of arts in history with Goinghonors.backto school as an adult did, however, have its challenges. Isabella had to learn how to navigate the college system along with how to be a student again. “Academically, I had to learn all over how to write a paper!” she said.
Additionally, Mariano’s history professor, Bridgitte Scheffer became her cheerleader. “She was the one who snapped me out of the panic I felt when I got the admission letter from UC Berkeley. She said I had exactly what Cal Berkeley values: curiosity. She told me I would fit in beautifully, and she was right,”said Mariano. She further appreciates DVC’s professors and counselors for her overall success in the program. “They are the backbone of this institution,” she said.
When a few fun classes lead to a master’s degree and a consulting career
Student Success
Mariano worked for a year after graduating UC Berkeley then enrolled at CSU-East Bay for a master’s degree in history. During her graduate studies she received two research scholar ships “I presented one of my research papers at the annual AHA-Amercan Historical Association conference in August 2021,” said Mariano. Mariano now enjoys being a history consultant for museums and working as a Student Advisor for transfer students at UC Berkeley. When asked if she values her DVC education Mariano said, “DVC offered me a rare opportunity to pick a new interest and convert it into a new career!”

At DVC she found the guidance she needed to succeed from her advisor Nancy Luciano. Even when things were difficult, she could count on Nancy for support. “Nancy believed in me even when I did not,” Mariano said.
