SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURS
A
ll around the world, people, especially in smaller communities, are rejecting large, impersonal big-box national retailers and voting with their wallets to support locally-run business entrepreneurs in their communities. While it may seem more expensive, in some cases, to buy local, the reality is that the actual cost is much cheaper once you take into account the true cost of doing business. Here are some reasons why, as they say, local is lekker! 1. Improve the local economy For every R100 spent at a local business, about R60 remains in the community, while only R40 remains when you buy from a national retailer. This means that when you buy local, there is more money to be respent again and again in the same community. Local business owners often have an incentive to support other local businesses, patronising local establishments for both business and personal reasons. National retailers, on the other hand, tend to get their supplies from corporates, as well as having store managers and employees that aren’t as personally invested in buying local.
02 | 2020 MY CAPE WHALE COAST DIRECTORY
2. Know the people behind the product When you know the faces behind the business where you’re buying local products and services, you build up a personal connection you would not otherwise have. Along with the rest of the community, you celebrate when a favourite local business succeeds and grows and you mourn when it’s forced to shut its doors. When a chain business closes, apart from perhaps feeling disappointment at having fewer shops within driving distance, you don’t have the same personal investment. 3. More personalised and better service Local owners personally know their customers. In many cases, they will be neighbours. They will know the products you buy or the services you request on a regular basis and can tailor services to make your experience even better. They will probably know your favourite drink or meal, suggest books for you to read, introduce you to a new flower and be willing to go out of their way to get something special that isn’t on the price list or normally offered. When there is a problem, you will sort it out quicker and easier when you deal with a local owner. For many, this is a price that is worth paying extra for!

ABOUT CAPE WHALE COAST
T
he Cape Whale Coast is acknowledged as a sustainable tourism destination with four Blue Flag beaches, recognised for their world-class amenities, safety and pristine environments. The Harold Porter Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay, Flower Valley, Grootbos and Platbos outside Gansbaai, and Fernkloof Nature Reserve in Hermanus provide tranquil spaces where the glory of our Cape Floral Kingdom can be appreciated. Field-to-fork dining and eco-friendly practices are a source of pride as we strive to tread respectfully on the earth. There’s more. Apart from being known as the best land-based whale-watching destination in the world, the Overstrand recently received the UNESCO designation as Creative City of Gastronomy. The only rock art in the Overberg is found just outside the heritage village of Stanford on Phillipskop Mountain Reserve, the biggest abalone farm in the world can be visited at Heart of Abalone in Hermanus, De Kelders has drip caves that sheltered early humans during the last Ice Age, and Kleinmond has a herd of wild horses that roams the banks of the Bot River Lagoon.

TOWNS GANSBAAI
Gansbaai is a fishing town that has become world-renowned for its dense population of great white sharks, drawing visitors from across the globe for shark-cage diving and whale watching. This friendly town is situated in the centre of numerous small bays, with miles of unspoiled beaches and nature reserves with approximately 1 500 species of fynbos, ancient Milkwood forests, rocky inlets, caves and spectacular views across Walker Bay. At De Kelders is the fascinating Klipgat cave, where excavations have shown that early humans lived there more than 70 000 years ago. The village has two harbours where many fishing trawlers and boats come and go daily, supplying fresh catches to fishmongers and local restaurants. Regular boat trips departing from Kleinbaai Harbour take guests to Dyer Island and Shark Alley, a hot spot for the Marine Big 5 – sharks, whales, seals, dolphins and penguins. PHOTO: grootbos.com

HANGKLIP-KLEINMOND
The name of the quaint coastal town of Kleinmond is derived from its location at the mouth of the Bot River Lagoon. It is situated within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve which is known as the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom and supports over 1 600 species of fynbos. Attractions that are well worth a visit include the Harbour Road waterfront shopping area leading down to the Kleinmond harbour, where you’ll find everything from markets, galleries and arts and crafts shops to pubs and restaurants. Pampering treatments are available at the nearby Western Cape Hotel & Spa, which is also home to the Arabella Golf Course, ranked among the top 10 courses in South Africa. Kleinmond boasts a pristine Blue Flag beach and a placid lagoon offering swimming, canoeing, kayaking and boating. PHOTO: Strandveld Hiking Club

TOWNS HERMANUS
Hermanus is the biggest town on the Cape Whale Coast and a popular holiday destination. World-famous for land- and boat-based whale watching, Hermanus also boasts a unique Cliff Path that runs for 12 km along the coastline. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve covers 1 800 hectares of fynbos and has over 60 kilometres of hiking trails. Surrounded by natural beauty, the town offers a plethora of outdoor activities, from swimming and surfing in the ocean, to kitesurfing or kayaking on the lagoon, and trail running or mountain biking in the Hemelen-Aarde Valley. This wine-growing region is also home to several award-winning wineries, providing abundant opportunities for wining and dining. A lively cultural hub, Hermanus has various craft markets in and around town, historic places of interest to visit, excellent restaurants and accommodation establishments, and art galleries and speciality shops to browse. Various festivals are hosted annually that provide a further drawcard for visitors.

DID YOU KNOW?
he pristine coastline of the Cape Whale Coast stretches from the coastal hamlet of Rooiels in the west to Quoin Point in the east, nestled between majestic fynbos-clad mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can approach the Cape Whale Coast by following Clarence Drive, voted the most scenic route in the world. The main towns of the area are Kleinmond, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai; but the Cape Whale Coast is in fact made up of a collection of villages, farms, rivers, bays, coves and valleys – each filled with its own special magic. Explore the beaches, whales, sharks, wine routes, fynbos, birding, golf courses, penguins, mountain biking, hiking trails and adventure activities in our beautiful region.
HANGKLIP-KLEINMOND
• Kleinmond and its neighbouring villages of Rooiels, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay fall within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, South Africa’s first registered biosphere covering 18 000 hectares. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. • A unique herd of wild horses roams the area around the Bot River Lagoon, from Rooisand near Kleinmond to Fisherhaven. • The Arabella Golf Course near Kleinmond is a world-class 18-hole, Par 72 championship masterpiece which has consistently been ranked among the top 10 courses in South Africa. • The infamous whaling station at Stony Point in Betty’s Bay was established in 1913 and operated until 1930. Stony Point is now home to one of only two shore-based African Penguin colonies in South Africa.
HERMANUS
• Because of the southern right whales that annually visit the Walker Bay coastline between June and November, Hermanus has the world’s only Whale Crier, who blows his kelp horn to announce sightings. • Hermanus must be the only town with a station without ever having had a train service. The proposed railway service between Hermanus and Bot River was literally stopped in its tracks by the general manager of the SA Railway, Sir William Hoy, who wanted to preserve the character of the town as a sleepy village. • Hermanus is one of only three places in South Africa with a 27-hole golf course. • The town’s Hemel-en-Aarde wine region is home to internationally acclaimed wineries that produce some of South Africa’s best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines.
STANFORD
• Stanford is situated on the banks of the Klein River, which is the shortest river in the world 08 | 2020 MY CAPE WHALE COAST DIRECTORY
DID YOU KNOW? from source to mouth – only 5km as the crow flies – but meanders for 80 km before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean at the Klein River Estuary. • The Klein River Estuary is 10 km long, and 2 km wide, and is a mecca for kitesurfing, kayaking and canoeing. • Stanford dates back to 1857 when De Kleine Rivier Valey Farm was subdivided into a typical rural village layout with large erven and a central public square. It was proclaimed a heritage village, including the historic Market Square, in 1997. • Stanford has a unique 'leiwater' system which channels water from a spring called ‘Die Oog to Stanford properties by gravity. People use this water to water their gardens and vegetables.
GANSBAAI
• Gansbaai is the Great White Shark Capital of the world due to the size and consistency of the great white shark population off the Gansbaai coast. • Gansbaai was voted the Best Destination for Responsible Tourism and the coveted position of Overall Winner by World Travel Market Africa in 2015. • The ancient indigenous Platbos forest just outside Gansbaai is the southernmost forest in Africa. • HMS Birkenhead is the most famous of several ships that were wrecked off this treacherous coastline, leading to the establishment of a lighthouse at Danger Point in 1892.
