Our town weeps The Overstrand community expressed its shock and outrage over the senseless killing of two residents in the early hours of Sunday morning in Hawston. Acting SAPS Station Commander for Hermanus Lt. Col. Rounita Burgess (48), her daughter, Randy (18), Rudi Salo (45), Lyndon Julies and another girl were traveling in a car when a gunman opened fire. Randy and Rudi were killed instantly while Rounita and Lyndon were wounded. The other passenger was not injured. The incident took place near a campsite where a bikers’ rally was taking place. Roulita took over as acting Station Commander in December last year. Randy, who recently matriculated from Hawston Secondary School, would have cele-brated her 19th birthday on 26 February with her twin sister, Ray. According to a police statement a 26-year old man was arrested at approximately 06:30 on Sunday morning and is expected to appear in court on charges of murder and attempted murder. He is known to the Burgess family. After the shooting Lyndon was able to race his car to the Hermanus Hospital where he and Rounita were admitted. Rounita was later transferred to a hospital in Cape Town where she is still fighting

for her life. Social media pages were on Sunday overflowing with messages of sympathy for the families of the deceased. Kay-lee Burgess (22), Rounita’s older daughter, wrote on her mother’s Facebook wall “No words can describe how sore we are. RIP my loving sis, we miss you already… and mammy just hang in there, God is in control.” Larenzo Isaacs, a close friend, wrote: “Our deepest condolences to the Burgess and Salo families. This is surely a black Sunday for our community... May God comfort all affected by the untimely deaths and loss of these beautiful souls... Our family are praying for u all.” “Sad day. No child should die like this and no parent should lose a child like this,” wrote Lara Pienaar. Other comments were: • Nikita Adams: “RIP Randy Burgess may the angels be with u on your journey... You will be missed... Cape Town is praying for your mother and you, you beautiful soul.” • Jessy Hendricks: “God took one of His most beautiful flowers.” • Allison Poole: “Words can't describe how or what I'm feeling... RIP Randy... dear Lord I pray for your healing hands over oumies's life.” • Wendy Clarke: “So terribly sad that things like this happen.”

Picture: Will Penny. The photo was taken at an altitude of 9 000 ft. On the 4th of February two skydivers jumped from an altitude of 11 000 ft and landed on the geographical southern-most point of the African continent, Cape Agulhas. Will Penny, South Africanborn World Champion

Skydiver and Graham Field successfully performed this high profile demo jump and made it into the history books as the first two people ever to achieve this stunt. Over the past two years Will Penny and his skydiving partner Allegra Nasi have

traveled the globe looking for the most breathtaking locations to skydive over. The Penny family have a long history in this region and have been holidaying in Waenhuiskrans for three generations, so it seemed a natural choice of location as part of their world tour.

As the conditions in this area are tricky due to high winds and technical landings, only Will and Graham opted to jump over the southern-most tip and landed just centimeters away from the famous sign that indicates the merging of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Editorial comment: More than just another tragic killing Although The Hermanus News is dedicated to bringing you the good news about our region and its residents, an incident as serious as the killing and wounding of four people cannot be ignored, especially when one of the victims is a police officer. Hermanus has its fair share of crime but we are, to a large extent, spared the gruesomeness and violence of crime that is rampant in other parts of the country. But senseless killings, armed robberies, attacks that cause grievous bodily harm, stabbings, theft and poaching in our community are more than just fodder for sensationalist newspaper headlines. It is a cancer that eats away at the very substance of our community. Incidents of crime have an impact on every resident in our

region. It corrodes our image as a safe and appealing destination, it leaves our residents and visitors in fear and it impedes our economic growth. We appeal to all residents, every law enforcement agency and the local authorities to find common ground to work together. No longer can we turn a blind eye to any crime. We cannot afford to ignore the impact of poaching, attacks on our cliff paths or even people openly flaunting even the most basic of bylaws. With the available resources we have, including a municipal court, we need to stop crime in all its forms and guises. We mourn the loss of Randy and Rudi and extend our condolences to their family and friends. - ED

The Reambler

How do I love thee? Let me count the rambles

“The Rambler column is the best thing I have ever read. It makes me roar with laughter and I read the articles over and over again. The next issue just never comes soon enough for me. I would like to make a suggestion – instead of giving your paper away for nothing why not charge R10 per copy and pass on all the proceeds to The Rambler? I am sure that very few of your

readers would argue. (D.S., Vermont)” “My friends and I were full of eager anticipation when we heard that there was to be a “Rambler” column in your newspaper. Regrettably, our hopes were dashed when we eventually got to read the actual articles. Just imagine how we felt when, instead of interesting route maps of gentle 50 km hikes through the fynbos or advice on how best to store your energy bars, we were confronted with paragraphs of drivel about fridges and malls. I will never buy your paper again. (Lt. Col. (rtd.) A. Long-Walker, Chairman, Overberg Rambling Club)” “Yet another display of neocolonialist, racist, third force, anti-ruling-party, counter-

revolutionary rhetoric. Your so-called “Rambler” happily pokes fun at the privileged few but blithely disregards the majority. We are just as capable as anyone else of being made fools of. He even uses black ink on white paper to produce his column. Why does he never use white ink on black? A prime example of the abuse of the means of production. (“Angry” Bezuidenhout (48), ANCYL, Voelklip Branch)” “Dear The. You have wun 45 million Naira on the Nigerian Lotery!! To clame you’re prize just reply with you bank details password and pin. (Bungme Wonga by SMS)” “I cut out all The Rambler articles and send them to my family in Australia. That way I don’t have to read

The Hermanus Cliff Path also extends up and around Hoy’s Koppie – that seemingly incongruous rocky outcrop in the middle of Hermanus. Hoy’s Koppie is part of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve and is protected under the same environmental laws. It has some interesting flowers, one of which is so rare that the boardwalk around the south of the Koppie had to be aligned so that it did not go near one precious plant specimen – Brachysiphon rupestris.

Carrot cake mentality As a regular 2-3 months annual visitor to South Africa, particularly Hermanus, I appreciate the view expressed in the leading article 'Will mall negatively affect CBD?' [Hermanus News, 26 Jan] that 'something has to be done'. But what, by whom and how? Hermanus is a wonderful product made up of sea, sun, mountains, vineyards, whales, dolphins and beautiful landscapes. The sellers of this product have had it good for years. The product has not changed. Unfortunately, some retail businesses, property owners etc. have become complacent. Sooner or later, sooner as it now appears, big greedy competitors will want a slice of rich pickings. After all, why did you open your business here? What can you do? How can you stop them? Well, you cannot stop them coming, but you can do something about the customers. What is generally lacking in Hermanus? The

answer is customer service and the concept that the customer is king - not the product, is so often absent. Many small businesses, cafés, so-called restaurants and other outlets have paid scant regard to the customer. Customers change, the product does not. How you sell that product and the service you offer customers will have a huge effect on improving your business, helping it grow and be more profitable in spite of competition. Mainly, when I go into a café, I ask for a nice fresh English or Danish pastry. What do I get? I receive a blank stare and a mumbled reply "we have carrot cake". I do not want carrot cake. But I can go to Gateway for example, and choose delicious pastries that look attractive and taste delicious. Many Hermanus shop owners sell what they have on the unconfirmed assumption it is what the

9 FEBRUARY 2016

customer wants. If you do the same tomorrow as you did yesterday, you will get what you got yesterday. The successful competition will identify and sell what the customer wants or needs. Much of Hermanus business needs to change its mind set and concentrate more effort on customer relations and service which means a change in staff training culture. How much training do you give your new staff before they start work on Monday morning and "sit by Nellie"? Do you provide continuous staff development training (which is quite different from product or content training)? It is not sufficient to hand out a menu, put food on the table and collect empty plates. How many of your staff welcome customers with a meaningful smile and engage with them by asking "How are you?", "Did you enjoy your meal?" or "What else can I get for you?" There is so much more you can achieve if you train your staff to be customer

orientated. The problem and the solution are with the owners. Do you close for a period each week for staff training? Do you allow your staff time off to attend college? How do you appoint managers? What management training do you provide before making a promotion? One senior manager told me he disapproved of staff training and development because, he said, trained staff would leave and get a better job and more pay elsewhere. If that is not carrot cake mentality, what is? I have merely touched the tip of the iceberg; there is so much more that can be done. Come out of your mind set shell. You cannot stop new mall developments, but you can still attract new customers and grow bigger by adopting innovative ideas and creative thinking. Change your attitude and perception towards your staff and customers. Richard Brown

This column is meant to appeal to all shades of opinion so long as they coincide with those of The Rambler. As such, it has attracted a considerable amount of comment and we would like to publish here just a few extracts from some of the mountains of correspondence which we have received.

The green fingers of Fernkloof On the northern side of Hermanus, the magnificent Fernkloof Nature Reserve nestles in the Kleinrivier Mountains. Covering 1800 ha and boasting a 60 km network of trails, the Reserve is the only place on the planet where so many different species grow in such close proximity to one another. The Cliff Path Nature Area formally became part of the Fernkloof Reserve in 2000. A staggering figure of more than 1 200 species have been identified and collected in the Reserve. Nature has provided her bounty, the conscientious have protected, honoured and catalogued it. Sometimes in life, one occasions to come across someone really special, someone who leaves an indelible mark on others and that which is around them. At Fernkloof I found not only one but a group of these special individuals. Together they form a team, a continuum. Dedicated in their desire to preserve and document our floral kingdom for generations to come, these Hermanus stalwarts have freely given untold combined years of effort to afford us, residents and visitors alike, a precious and beautiful gift. Invited to write in the prestigious Yearbook of the Heather Society, founded in 1963 in the UK, Geraldine Gardiner wrote, “It is rated

one of the most beautiful Ericas in the world. Called the Pride of Hermanus, Erica aristata is at its peak high on the Klein River mountains in September – just in time to grace the Spring Flower Show. Of the 860 species of Erica worldwide, it is one of 74 which grow in the small ecological hotspot, the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.” Of notable journalistic background, this “indefatigable restorer-inchief of the Fernkloof Botanical Gardens, writer and former editor of the Botanical Society’s ‘Herbs’ newsletter for 10 years, show publicist and past Botsoc’s committee member” has been one of the organisers of the highly regarded annual flower show. This energetic octogenarian has played an integral role in the rehabilitation of the gardens and has participated in many projects, such as the wheelchair friendly ‘Walk on Wheels’ path. Awarded a lifetime membership of Hermanus Botsoc for her outstanding work, she is quick to divert attention away from herself, towards another gem in the team. Now in her nineties, Belle Barker is the tireless energy behind the scenes. Reluctant of attention, this much admired local

botanical expert, teacher and mentor has been at the forefront of gathering an extensive variety of fynbos for the annual Hermanus Wildflower Festival over many years. She has put supreme effort into hacking in the Reserve and has for many years kept an immaculate named display of flowers in the Visitors’ Centre. Since the early eighties, Belle has helped the Keeper of the Herbarium, doing meticulous research and documentation. She continues with Christa Clark in keeping a working booklet of Fernkloof’s species and updating its records. She speaks not of herself, but with reverence of the doyenne of the Reserve, someone who has dedicated much of her life to the promotion of knowledge, understanding and appreciation of this magnificent fynbos area. Since her arrival in Hermanus almost forty years ago, Priscilla Drewe has afforded an outstanding contribution to the Fernkloof Reserve and to the Hermanus Botsoc. Her knowledge of the local flora is legion. In 1987, this local amateur Botanist made a world-first discovery of a new species of flower of the Fabaceae (pea) family. The Royal Botanic Gardens in

Geraldine Gardiner and Belle Barker at Fernkloof Nature Reserve. It was Belle’s wish that instead of birthday gifts for her 80th birthday, that contributions be given towards a story board for the Reserve. This was her birthday gift donated to the gardens.

Kew named this species in her honour, ‘Otholobium dreweae’. “Under Priscilla’s stewardship, the Hermanus Herbarium was included in the Edition 8 Index Herbariorum, a New York based publication, putting it firmly on the world botanical map.” Keeper of the Herbarium at Fernkloof for twenty three years, Honorary and now Life President, past Chair of Botsoc and flower show convenor, Priscilla was awarded the highest accolade of the Overstrand Conservation Foundation in 2007, the Lifetime Achievement Award. Geraldine and Belle speak of many highly respected names. Dr Ion Williams ‘Doc’ was co-founder of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve in 1957, the Botsoc and the Cliff Path in 1960 and the initiator of Fernkloof’s neighbouring privatelyowned reserve, Vogelgat. He and his wife Sheila, an untiring specimen collector who is responsible for the coastal collection in the Hermanus Herbarium, were the Fernkloof Nature Reserve pathfinders. It was they who imparted their knowledge of flora and collecting to Priscilla Drewe and “really launched me into the botanical world”. The Hermanus Herbarium was originally established to house Professor Orchard’s significant plant collections and Sheila Williams’ notable coastal collection. A man of vision and dedication, Harry Wood was the first curator of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve and founder of the garden area. Frank Woodvine, past Chairman of the Fernkloof Advisory Board, was presented the prestigious floating trophy for meritorious contribution to environmental conservation in the Overstrand over 34 years, by Mayor Theo Beyleveldt. Made Honorary Life Member of Botsoc in 1995 and awarded a Lifetime Achievement award

by the Overstrand Conversation Foundation, his work is legion. Lee Burman, member of the Botsoc Committee and Fernkloof Advisory Board for 34 years, is the present Keeper of the Herbarium. David Beattie and the Cliff Path Management Group undertook three months and 12.5 km of foot slog studies along the path. Their names and those of many others who deserve notable mention, have given tirelessly of their time and devotion to the preservation of our natural beauty. The younger generation of botanists,

those of strong legs and boundless energy now walk those same paths in the Reserve with purpose in continuing the sterling work of those before. Each and every resident of the Overstrand should take time out to visit this beautiful Reserve, to breathe in the fragrant floral scents and revel in the tranquillity. When there, spare a moment of appreciation for her custodians, the old guard and the now the new. We salute each and every one of you. – Kathy Mulock-Bentley

Artwalking our town The first Hermanus First Fridays (HFF) Artwalk of the year took place on 5 February when both locals and visitors enjoyed strolling from gallery to gallery on a warm summer’s evening. From 5-8pm the town was buzzing with groups of people viewing the wonderful variety of art on display while mingling with friends, artists and gallery owners and enjoying the wine and snacks on offer. Several restaurants in the vicinity of the galleries such as Old Harbour Café stayed open and provided a welcome dinner to art-weary walkers.

Having a good time at Forty x 40 Gallery were Debbie and Andrew Van Kerwel with their friend Sharon Africa (on the left) and their daughter Jada.

Sumaridge Wine Estate will be hosting a joint exhibition of works by local artists Terry Kobus from Originals and Ed Bredenkamp from Lembu titled ‘My Journey’ at their tasting venue in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Both Terry and Ed are originally from Zimbabwe and now call Hermanus home. Terry’s sensitive drawings and paintings on antique geographical and celestial maps, old envelopes and sheet music explore the theme of migration, using birds as a metaphor for people in transition and the current tragic refugee crisis. Ed is well-known for his unique ‘red elephant’ paintings and for this exhibition he’s produced a series of drawings on rice paper, using earth-toned oil pencils to create striking animal and human portraits. The exhibition opens on 12 February.

My Pet

Chocolate is poison to pets A heart-stopping R200 billion will be spent on chocolate in the United States this Valentine’s Day and billions more around the world as this declaration of love, named after a martyred saint, is celebrated globally. Ever since Richard Cadbury marketed his product in heart-shaped boxes in 1861, chocolate and love have been inextricably linked so it’s not difficult to understand, given how much we love our pets, why so many of us want to treat them to something special on February 14 too. But chocolate is toxic to animals and can kill. It contains caffeine and theobromine, two stimulants that affect the central nervous system and the heart muscle in pets. The amount of chocolate it takes to poison your pet depends on the type of chocolate and his weight

Harry sniffed it out and wolfed it down. “He started vomiting and groaning and moaning and his stomach was very sensitive to touch.” Fortunately Marene lives across the road from veterinary surgeon Dr Hilldidge Beer who administered emergency treatment.

but because each pet reacts differently, it’s best to avoid chocolate entirely. If your pet has eaten a piece of chocolate, he or she may exhibit the following symptoms: restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, vomiting, excessive panting and increased urination. If he isn't treated immediately, he could go into seizure, possibly even die.

If your pet displays any of the symptoms of chocolate ingestion first make sure it’s chocolate that he’s eaten. Then make him vomit immediately. This is easiest with a 3 percent solution hydrogen peroxide, at a dosage of 1mm per kg of dog (a teaspoon per 5kg). It’s handy to keep hydrogen peroxide, obtainable from pharmacies, in your medicine cabinet at all times. Mix the solution with peanut butter or ice cream so the dog will gulp it down.

Marene Keyter of Somerset West has first hand experience of how frightening it is to see a dog suffer the after effects of eating chocolate. Her nineyear-old Jack Russell, Harry, recently ate an entire slab of organic dark chocolate. “We usually make sure we put chocolate where Harry can’t find it because we know how dangerous it can be for dogs but we totally forgot about the slab in my aunt’s handbag.”

Baboon dispersal a temporary solution intercepted as they reached 1st Street, but four baboons managed to move as far as 6th Street before they were encouraged to move back to the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. Staff members were equipped with radios, vehicles, paintball guns and bear bangers (black powder caps) as per the protocol followed in normal baboon monitoring operations. “During the operation, a total of four bear bangers and five paintballs were dispensed,” says Stephen. “In addition, one smoke canister was discharged after the baboons had left the urban edge.

In order to assist residents officials from the Law Enforcement Unit as well as the Environmental Protection Section were involved in an operation to disperse baboons in Voëlklip on 4 February.

“Altogether 22 baboons stayed within the Fernkloof Nature Reserve and 6 individuals were encouraged to leave the residential area.”

Six Law Enforcement Officers, four Environmental Protection staff and four Coastal Monitors (EPWP programme) were deployed as the baboons crossed the urban edge. The majority of the baboon troop was

GUS: A 2-year-old sterilized male Border Collie cross with loads of energy. He plays well with his friends in the run, but gets very protective of his human when walking. He will adjust to home life if his new family can understand that he is a young fellow and, just like a teenager, he needs calm, firm leadership and engagement from his humans. He’s a very clever chap and will enjoy mental challenges such as agility, obedience work and trick training, as well as physical challenges like long hikes and walks with the family.

Stephen says the Overstrand Municipality took this action to bring temporary relief to affected areas in Voëlklip. The intervention can in no way be seen as a sustainable activity as officials have to be withdrawn from their normal duties and budget has to be withdrawn from existing commitments to finance this activity.

The activity cannot be repeated frequently under these conditions. It is expected that the baboons will return to Voëlklip within a matter of days or a week. “The question remains then as to how human and wildlife conflict will be managed in future,” says Stephen. “Pringle Bay is an example where the community has successfully established control over marauding troops, by financing a small community driven monitoring team. Until now however, there has been little support for a community driven project in Voëlklip, and this type of activity is beyond the scope of the Public Private Partnership between the Municipality and Hermanus Public Protection. In the absence of any support from government agencies, it is therefore unlikely that a baboon monitoring programme will be possible in the Hermanus region in future.”

ROSEY: Rosey is a 1½-yearold Staffy cross who gets on well with other dogs. She’s a very active and energetic little lady and really enjoys the tumbling games with the other dogs in the run. She will suit a home of active folks who’d be able to take her up the mountain, along the cliff paths, to the beach and all the other lovely outdoor places. Daily walks combined with obedience training will help to drain her energy and occupy her busy mind.

Tiny TINA & BAXTER: These two energy bunnies are brother and sister Daschund x Staffy. They are habituated to living in a home (potty trained and house-happy) but will need to be reminded of their manners every now and again (they are mischievous puppies, after all!). They can be homed separately but are very good friends and can be homed together too. Both have been sterilized. Baxter is more outgoing and Tiny Tina is more shy, but both are affectionate dogs who really enjoy laptime and kisses. They’re an active pair and will need to be kept busy in constructive ways.

“The Overstrand Municipality receives an average of four complaints per day from residents in Voëlklip concerning baboon induced damage to property, as well as an overwhelming density of the troop that frequents private properties in certain parts of the suburb,” says Stephen Müller, Director: Infrastructure and Planning of the Overstrand Municipality.

Shall we dance?

Eight years ago, our very own Ginger Rogers left corporate Pretoria in favour of living a balanced lifestyle in the Overstrand, where she could concentrate on her talent and passion for dance.

This was not a difficult decision for someone who from the age of five, danced her way through ballet, modern dance, Spanish, hip hop, funk and ultimately ballroom. School Eisteddfod medals made way for certificates right up to Dance Teachers, Directors and Adjudicators. Competing at a high level across multiple dance disciplines, this talented artist now yearned to own and run her own dance studio. Two years working on cruise liners raised the necessary funds to realise her dream and in 2010, the Hermanus Social Dance Club was born. Lani Nel, well-liked and respected owner of this popular dance hub, enthuses on the numerous benefits of dance. “It is one of the most comprehensive forms of exercise and activity that one can do. Amongst many other benefits, it increases brain activity, engages most muscles, including the heart, improves posture and balance, promotes teamwork, communication and tolerance, as well as emotional release.”

Most patrons join to have fun and enjoy dancing. Separate classes are offered for newcomers and alternative six week short courses to ‘get one’s feet going.’ These interactive classes focus on the basic principles of dance.

Lani offers encouraging words, “Many wonderful friendships have been born on the dance floor. There is just something about learning together, figuring out the puzzle of how to move together when it feels like you want to fall over, struggling with and then overcoming a difficult element, that connects people.” “Dancing is a physical activity and you aren’t going to learn it in a couple of lessons, much like Yoga and Aerobics. Learning to dance is not about learning one particular dance, it is about learning how to move to the correct rhythm of the music, on your own as well as with a partner.” Free ‘Intro evenings’ are offered, where you sample a Group or Social evening and are shown the ropes. Singles and couples are welcome and you select the structure that best suits your needs. Whether you have ‘two left feet’, are a shy single who would love to dance, or someone

looking to hone their dancing skills, there is something for everyone.

There is a Golden Oldies Social (76 years+) and school group classes are offered from Grades 4 to 12. Learners can elect to do an exam at the end of the year, should they wish to add this to their extramural CVs. Fun, Open Social Dance evenings are held bi-weekly, Dance2Fitness focuses on dance technique classes, while Ball-&-Latin-Line is more cardio oriented. Couple-work classes (singles welcome) focus on ‘how to step together’ and include a Salsa and Argentine focus, mainstream, Social Ballroom, Latin dances and the more speciality swings and Latins. Lani stresses that there is a pricing structure to suit all. Pay-as-you-go per class or social, monthly in advance and six monthly options are available. It all starts with one step. What’s cooking in the restaurants of Hermanus

Two new eateries that were added to the mix during the festive season include Mon Desir on Marine Drive next to the Misty Waves Hotel. Business partners Werner

Heunis and Paul Buckingham (from Lemon Butta) did extensive renovations to this lovely heritage building situated opposite the historic Hermanuspietersfontein to convert it from holiday

accommodation to a restaurant. The former restaurant space in Misty Waves has conversely been changed into extra suites and Mon Desir now services all the culinary needs of the hotel’s guests, from pool and room service to breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant is also open to the public from Wednesday to Monday (closed on Tuesdays). Paul describes their cuisine as a “modern take on classic” and the setting is certainly lovely, especially the outside area overlooking the ocean.

Bakery Café in The Village, which has now extended their opening hours to include dinner from Wednesday to Saturday. Already a firm favourite for hearty breakfasts, light lunches, excellent coffee, freshly baked artisan breads and pastries, the evening menu adds a number of more sophisticated dishes to the mix such as Osso Bucco and Veal Scallopini. “We decided to add a bit of an Italian flavour,” says Ankea Herringshaw. With BIGA being a bakery and all, you’ll also find delicious pies such as Jamie Oliver’s Fish Pie and a Springbok & Guinness Pie on the evening menu.

Mellow music at EAT

On the other side of The Village, the ever-popular EAT restaurant now has live music every Saturday evening performed by Jared Prior. As a local singer-entertainer, Jared

While waiting for the bureaucratic wheels to deliver their visas, Kevin and Inemari jumped in to help Celia and Rayno with the development of Betty Blue’s menu. “We cooked for weeks on end, sometimes late into the night, trying out different flavour combinations,” says Celia. It’s little wonder then that, when Betty Blue opened its doors, the dishes on their menu took diners’ taste buds by storm – they were, after all, created by a chef who is part of a Michelin-star team!

Local winemakers added the sold-out Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir Celebration to their busy harvesting schedules on 29 & 30 January when guests arrived from all over the world for this prestigious event. Hosted for the third year at Bona Dea Private Estate, the event included a tasting of Pinot noirs from Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Bouchard Finlayson, La Vierge, Sumaridge, Newton Johnson, Ataraxia, Creation, Domaine des Dieux, Storm Wines and Crystallum presented by the winemakers, followed by a gala dinner on the Friday evening. The festivities continued with individual events on the wine farms on the Saturday. The Pinot noir proceedings were facilitated by South African born Master of Wine Greg Sherwood. Greg did his dissertation on Method Cap Classique production and is currently working at Handford Wines in the UK. He is only the fourth South African ever to pass the distinguished Master of Wine examinations. Said Hemel-en-Aarde Winegrowers’ chairperson Bevan Newton Johnson: “We appreciate the overwhelming interest of Pinot noir lovers in this annual event that celebrates this special grape variety and the wines made by Hemel-en-Aarde producers”.

A relative calm has descended on the various eateries in town and staff members seem to have lost that frazzled demeanour they displayed during the holiday period when coffee shops and restaurants were so swamped with customers that they battled to keep up. Staff problems proved challenging to restaurant owners during this time, and some also complained about patrons making bookings and failing to turn up while walk-ins had in the meantime been turned away. But every season is a learning curve and let’s hope some of these problems have been ironed out by the time Easter rolls by.

Cliff path walks the walk

The “flagship” project for the past year and one of the most ambitious projects developed and overseen by the CPMG, was the self-guided, educational Biodiversity Walk along the beautiful but previously degraded, litter and alien vegetation infested coastline between Hermanuspietersfontein and Gearing’s Point in front of the Windsor Hotel.

The Walk, consisting of a series of 20 signs that provide information on various aspects of natural biodiversity, five stone-clad seating nodes and upgraded pathways, was completed in May 2015. It also involved the replacement of tons of alien vegetation with some 7500 indigenous plants. Coincident with the inauguration of the Biodiversity Walk, the CPMG initiated and worked with the Hermanus History Society in developing a self-guided VoiceMap walk along what is known as the “champagne mile” section of our coastline between the Old Harbour and Hermanuspietersfontein, including Swallow Park. VoiceMap enables visitors to learn about points of interest and the history and geology

of the area simply by downloading an app on their smart phone and following instructions along the route. “Not all all news is good, however,” says CPMG chairperson David Beattie. “The damage to the reputation of Hermanus as a tourist destination and the cliff path as a safe recreation feature as a consequence of the November 2015 attacks on visitors is of grave concern to all of us. We hope that an increase in the number of HPP patrols along the cliff path, increased advice given to guests by hotels, B&Bs and the Tourism Bureau and the introduction of CCTV surveillance cameras will deter such attacks in the future.” Projects earmarked by the

Three projects carried over from as far back as the 2013/14 year are still on the drawing board, but have been delayed for yet another year pending budget availability. These projects entail a new 181 metre boardwalk around the perimeter of the Grotto recreational area and the re-establishment of a wetland along the northern edge of the area; the extension of the cliff path around the “Wendy House” linking Hermanuspietersfontein with the western end of the Biodiversity Walk; and the rebuilding of the badly degraded path from the eastern end of Piet-se-bos to houses above the Scout Camp including 3 x tanalithtreated boardwalks over wetland areas and redefining the path through coastal vegetation.

Among the goals for 2015 that have been achieved are the 337 metres of cliff paths and boardwalk bridges in the Eastcliff/Kwaaiwater area that were resurfaced in exposed aggregate concrete, replacing worn and eroded laterite surfaces; the majority of CPMG information signs along the 12 km length of the cliff path which were reprinted and replaced due to weathering and vandalism; the repair of the damaged grave of Lady Hoy on Hoy’s Koppie and replacement of the original brass plaques (one of which was stolen) with engraved granite plaques on the two graves; and the printing of a further 15 000 copies of the

Cliff Path Brochure, sponsored once again by Hermanus Rotary, and distributed, primarily through the Hermanus Tourism Bureau, to hotels, B&Bs and several restaurants. According to the Annual Chairman’s Report for 2015/2016, the CPMG has, since inception in 2002, spent over R3 million on the maintenance and upgrade of the Cliff Path, thanks to private and municipal contributions to the cliff path programme. The past year has proved to be an active and exciting one for the Cliff Path Management Group (CPMG), which is looking forward to celebrating its 15th (Crystal) anniversary next year. Relief for licence headache The decision to stop sending out reminders for the renewal of vehicle licences, the necessity for those who wish to register or license a vehicle to comply with the provisions of the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA), as well as the move last year of the Licensing Department to the premises of the Traffic Department have led to great frustration for many residents. The good news, however, is that the Licensing Department has made every effort to ensure the procedure flows as smooth and fast as possible. Although there is a staff shortage the department has implemented several changes to assist residents. This includes

Frieda Lloyd: Taking tourism to a new level demanded her attention. How long have you been living in Hermanus? My husband Galvin and I bought a holiday home in Vermont more than 10 years ago while we were still living in Somerset West. We used to spend every weekend and Wednesday evening at our house and a few months later we relocated permanently. What is it that you love about Hermanus? Galvin and I both love traveling and discovering new parts of the world, but

here in Hermanus we found everything that we enjoy in one place. There is the natural beauty and diversity of the landscape which includes the ocean, mountains and fynbos. There is the relaxed country lifestyle with hiking and swimming, alongside sophisticated wining and dining experiences. What more could you want? Tell me a little about your life prior to moving to Hermanus? I am the oldest of three girls and we are all very close. I

grew up in Cape Town and after matriculating I studied B.Com at the University of Stellenbosch. I also completed a Higher Education Diploma and did honours in International Marketing. Apart from teaching at a high school and lecturing at Cape College and Cape University of Technology, I’ve also worked for Old Mutual, first doing performance analysis of financial portfolios before moving into HR, and Saldanha Steel where I was involved with enterprise development. When we moved to Vermont I was working at the Trade Law Centre in Stellenbosch and continued to commute until I was offered a job at Newton Johnson. How did you meet your husband and how long have you been married? I met Galvin through a mutual friend, Pippa Haarhoff, who managed the West Coast Fossil Park, when I was working at Saldanha Steel and living in Langebaan. At the time Galvin, who is a qualified horticulturist and landscape artist, was working on a revegetation project on the West Coast. We got married in 2001 and settled on the Lourensford wine estate where Galvin managed the nursery. Not long after that we bought our holiday home in Vermont and settled there permanently when Galvin was offered a landscaping contract in Hermanus. He now works as the estate manager of Bona Dea in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. How did you get involved with the Hermanus Wine Route and Hermanus Tourism? I have always loved and appreciated wine. My mom worked for Stellenbosch Farmer’s Winery and we often drank wine at home. My first job in Hermanus was at Newton Johnson Vineyards where I worked for three years before joining

the Flower Valley Conservation Trust near Gansbaai. At the same time I continued as the coordinator of the Hermanus Wine Route and have served on the tourism committee for the last three years. Tourism is a sector I have always been interested in and I could put my qualifications and experience in marketing and HR to good use as the PR manager of Hermanus Tourism. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Galvin and I love to travel – visiting new places and having new experiences. Some of my favourite destinations include Rome, Barcelona, Majorca, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, but with the current exchange rate it is a much better option to travel locally. There is so much to see and do in our own area and we often take day trips to attend concerts or festivals, or to try out a new restaurant. We have a wide circle of friends who visit us regularly so we often feel like tourists in our own back yard. We always take friends and family to the wine route and Creation is always a highlight. Another destination that we enjoy is Harbour Road in Kleinmond with all its little eateries and galleries. And for a more

cosmopolitan experience I always enjoy the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Closer to home we love taking walks on the VOS cliff path with our dog. We also have three cats – all rescue animals who are like our children. What do you look forward to accomplishing in your new position? I enjoy being part of the formal framework of the Overstrand Municipality (OM) and the channels it provides to get things done properly. People tend to forget that the OM not only provides the local government structure for Hermanus, but also for three other towns – Hangklip/Kleinmond, Stanford and Gansbaai. Hermanus is not isolated and should be marketed as part of the Cape Whale Coast (CWC), with Clarence Drive, which has been voted the most scenic drive in the world, serving as the gateway to the CWC. Tourists want different things and by working together the CWC can offer a wider scope of attractions, from adventure activities to leisurely wine tastings. I would like to foster a closer sense of commonality between the different areas so that we can all work together for the common good. That means effective communication and proper co-ordination of the various tourism initiatives.

From being the marketer and coordinator of the Hermanus Wine Route and serving as a member of the Hermanus Tourism Committee representing the wine route, to being appointed as PR manager for Hermanus Tourism and now, since 1 February, as the senior tourism officer for the Cape Whale Coast… there seems to be no stopping our local tourism guru, Frieda Lloyd. The Hermanus News recently caught up with her – just long enough for Frieda to answer a few questions before urgent phone calls and emails

The entrance to the Hermanus Tourism Bureau has been brightened by the addition of new plants sponsored by the Hermanus Ratepayers Association and Walker Bay Nursery. The old pots were badly neglected because Tourism does not have the finances to maintain them. As always, Bill from Walker Bay Nursery was happy to help out and provided the plants and labour for the re-potting. This is just one of several projects the Hermanus Ratepayers Association (HRA) is involved with. Their green fingers extend to sponsoring the mowing of the children’s parks in Eastcliff and Northcliff, and they are currently working with Whale Coast Conservation to install cigarette butt bins and dog poop bag bins along the cliff path and blue flag beach. “We are committed to helping make our town the ‘greenest’ town in South Africa,” says Pam Herd of the HRA. “We urge residents to become HRA members so that together we can contribute to the preservation of our beautiful town.” The HRA has also jointly sponsored, with The Marine Hotel, our town’s whale crier Eric, to go on the first aid course that is required of him in order to continue his guided walks which are so popular with the tourists of Hermanus.

Calls for better connection continues Complaints continue that connection to the internet in town remains slow despite the end of the festive season and two temporary signal towers that have been erected. In a poll conducted on The Hermanus News Facebook group some 87% of the respondents said that internet connection in the Greater Hermanus area is too slow and that the connectivity problems need to be resolved. The problem is both the speed at which we connect as well as the fact that the signal is intermittent. This makes connection very slow and not only does it hamper business it creates a bad impression with visitors.

According to Don, the municipality is not responsible for internet connection or signal strength; this lies with the large communication enterprises. “Vodacom has put forward an application requesting permission to permanently install the towers at sites across the Overberg.” Several businesses and residents have commented that Hermanus needs fibre optic cabling to ensure faster connectivity and also reduce the current cost. Many of them have indicated that they are willing to contribute towards the installation of fibre optic cables as well as creating a free WiFi environment for the CBD.

According to Don Kearney, Senior Manager Hermanus: Area Management of the Overstrand Municipality, two temporary signal towers were erected by Vodacom during the festive season to boost both signal and internet strength to meet the demands of visitors who flock to the region during this time. The towers were strategically placed at both the Onrus campsite and in Voëlklip.

According to the Vodacom website, the region from Hawston through to De Kelders falls into the LTE coverage area. LTE is the fastest data network speed that you will find on smartphones. With devices that support LTE, an individual should find that data speeds are up to 10 times faster than 3G, which supports calls, messaging, internet browsing, email, apps, video streaming and file downloads. The connection can vary depending on your location.

“The towers which were meant to be dismantled during the January, February period will remain standing until the end of March. Vodacom requested permission to have the towers stay so as to cater for visitors up to the Easter Weekend. This way everyone benefits – all those with cellphones, laptops or tablets.”

Here are some of your Facebook comments: • Lucia Bowes: ADSL is totally inconsistent. Some days it’s so bad we can't open any sites. Generally, very poor service. • Judy Miller: Very slow and sometimes cannot connect at all....

• Tammy Bezuidenhout: It is very slow especially at Hermanus Beach Club. I cannot connect at all after 6pm and oh...it...is...soooo slow! Could do with another tower. It is very frustrating never having good signal. • Amanda Marais: ADSL is a nightmare, my Mac battles to keep the connection. My phone does better but can't do my work via my phone • Baleia de Hermanus: Intermittent access is too frustrating. Tourism experience is negatively affected, especially for SANSA guests who need a quality service. Hermanus' reputation is spoilt, we cannot offer a world class service, it's hopelessly inadequate! • Rae Holmes: ADSL averages half the line speed that you pay for. We need upgraded lines. • Ilse Bigalke: I have excellent connectivity with Telkom and Mweb. • Nicky Matthee: ADSL at some points are good and well everyone has down time at some point. I gave up my ADSL for WiFi and the last 5 years I have been with Sonic WiFi and never have I been unsatisfied with their service nor speeds. • Elizma Stemmet: I've tried WiFi as well as ADSL - both extremely frustrating and definitely we do not get what we pay for. *

Art student is tops At Hermanus High School’s prize-giving ceremony held last week, the top performers of the school were honoured for their academic achievements during the last term of 2015. Among the top-performing matriculants was Jana Pretorius, who achieved 94% for Visual Art and 96% for Design in the 2015 National Senior Certificate exam – the highest marks achieved in both subjects in the whole of the Western Cape. “We are thrilled with Jana’s performance,” says Vivienne Mitchley, principal of the Hermanus Visual Art & Design Centre. In addition to teaching at the centre alongside Jeandré Marinier, Vivienne has also been the principal of Northcliff House College for the past 16 years. She took charge of the art centre in 2012 and there are currently approximately 40 high school students from Hermanus High School, Northcliff House College and Overberg High School enrolled. Jana has already left for the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography where she will commence

her studies this year. As part of her subject prize, she received a trophy for her remarkable performance – the Dry Art Award – which will be passed to the centre’s top student every year. The trophy is a ceramic sculpture produced by the Hornbill studio of well-known local artist Erna Dry, who also co-owns The Art Gallery in Hermanus with fellow artists Jeandré Marinier, Lize van der Walt and Christine Henderson.

“I approached Erna about the trophy in honour of her son Jono Dry, who was one of Northcliff’s first Visual Art students and is now an established artist. She was very touched and honoured to donate such a worthy trophy,” says Vivienne. Jono has received wide acclaim for his unique pencil on graphite drawings. His large-scale photorealisticsurrealistic works are exhibited regularly at the Rossouw Modern Art Gallery in town.
