pring has indeed sprung early in the Overberg this year. About two weeks before the longed-for Spring Day, it was as if a switch had been flipped, miraculously transporting us from freezing winter temperatures to balmy spring weather. And nowhere is spring as beautiful as in the Overberg, with the buttery yellow of ripe canola fields and the soft pastel colours of blossoms covering the fruit orchards. With the new season comes lots of new activity, especially in Hermanus and surrounding towns. There are art walks, arts festivals, fynbos festivals, spring festivals, whale festivals, music and comedy shows and even the region’s first wedding expo to look forward to this month. Check out our events diary on page 3 and make sure you don’t miss out! For art lovers there is the monthly Hermanus First Fridays Artwalk, new galleries opening, and a very special exhibition at The Mission’s House Gallery that has been extended until 12 September. Read more about our town’s art news in Patrick Chapman’s column on page 6, and learn all about artist Eugene Botes’s exhibition of organic sculptures and prints at The Mission’s House Gallery on page 7. There is always something new happening in Hermanus, and this month sees the re-branding and re-launch of the Hemel-en-Aarde Village which coincides with our town’s iconic winery Hermanuspietersfontein’s 10th birthday celebrations. Restaurant news includes the re-opening of an old favourite, The Milkwood Bistro Restaurant & Beach Hut on Onrus beach, and the launch of well-known restaurant personalities Rayno and Celia Rabie’s new bistro on Main Road, Betty Blue. Turn to page 10 to read more. Another first for Hermanus is the pop-up treasure trove of handmade creativity called KAMERS. The exhibition will be hosted at Curro over the Heritage Day weekend and visitors can look forward to a celebration of local design, craft, art, fashion, décor, food, wine and music. Thursday 24 – Sunday 27 September Fernkloof Flower Festival The Hermanus Botanical Society will present their annual flower festival to celebrate our floral heritage with a spectacular display of local flowers in the Fernkloof Hall. Opening on Heritage Day, the festival will run from 09:00 – 17:00 on all three days. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Fynbos Creatures’ and displays around the hall will introduce you to the creatures who share the flower-covered hillsides with us. There will also be craft stalls, children’s entertainment, and delicious teas and lunches available throughout the festival. Visitors can also join a guided walk along the reserve trails. Thursday 24 Sep – Sat 10 Oct Whale Fringe Fest Several venues in Hermanus will be participating in the Whale Fringe Fest by presenting live music entertainment, with an array of exciting artists both renowned and up-and-coming. Friday 2 – Sunday 4 October Hermanus Whale Festival This popular annual event will celebrate its 24th year as the only enviro-arts festival in South Africa during the first weekend of October when thousands of visitors flock to Hermanus to celebrate spring, enjoy the unique natural environment, watch the whales and revel in great music. ermanus Pieters, the Dutch teacher who Overberg farmers from the early 1800’s imported because they didn’t like the idea of their children being schooled in English? Or is it the Postmaster who in 1902 decided Hermanuspietersfontein was too long a name for his rubber stamp and therefor shortened the village’s name to Hermanus? There are no heroes and no villains in this story. September 2015 however sees the wine brand with the longest Afrikaans name in the world celebrating its 10th birthday. After blasting its way out of the rock a decade agothe cellar staged its official opening as afarmer’s market. A novel idea at the time it turned out they would be the first wine cellar in South Africa to present a regular Saturday morning Food and Wine Market and till this day – come wind, rain or storm – they present the Saturday morning market. The cellar is run by a family like a family, which, at times resembles the Adams Family what with names like Kleinboet, Bloos, Posmeester and Skoonma - each a character in its own right. Kleinboet - the charmer and sportsman in the family. World Cup 2010 he volunteered as Bafana Bafana reserve; when they dropped out he donned his clogs and offered his services to the Dutch. At one time he aspired to become mayor of Hermanus and rumour has it he’s a real ladies man. Meantime his younger sister the shy girl with long legs, Bloos, has become an international favourite in her own right, people love her like mad. Some would say Posmeester is their hero because was it not for him there was no story behind their name. He first had to shorten the name so they could make a long story out of the whole affair! Then there’s the Kaalvoet Meisie from Sondagskloof – the nickname for Nr.7 Sauvignon blanc. The ‘greeny’ in the family who makes sure they do all the right things right; patron of the cellar’s Project 20/20 Love to Learn development program which, using tablet technology, helps teach kids ages 5 to 8 to learn to read and write. What’s so quirky about her? She never wears shoes. Like all ‘good’ families they too have black sheep – appropriately named Swartskaap. He has the confidence to live with his lot and as the saying goes things run off him like water off a duck’s back. What’s the one thing that runs through the whole family’s veins? The whole lot of them hails from their Sondagskloof BWI Champion cool climate. A bit like the Farmer Brown story of old – they taste so good because they eat so good?

Speaking of which: was it not for the fact Hermanus Pieters was mostly paid in sheep and there had to be a fountain where his flock could graze there would be no story. That’s why we’re told they use Skapie as their spokesperson. Asked what he wanted for his 10th birthday? “Friendships, thank you very much!”

ity centre art space in Hermanus is expanding like a supernova and this can only be good for this Art Destination of the Western Cape. The offering is getting bigger just in time for the summer season. Take my headline with a pinch of salt yet bear in mind that salt – or at least saltpetre – is the major component of gunpowder. We are not yet safe from the plague of fastfood outlets and “China” shops that seem to be the default position of desperate landlords but we are on the right track. SPACE GALLERY In April Jozua Rossouw more than doubled his floor area by opening SPACE down Warrington Arcade as a complement to his long-established gallery known as Rossouw Modern. This airy venue is being made available for multiple purposes – it is a party space, an art space , a space for happenings. Next up is Nicole Pletts, hailing from KZN. Her show “5933 Miles....” opens on 4 September. LEMBU too, has taken two shops in the Warrington Arcade, one as fabric studio and art space for Ed Bredenkamp to work on his canvasses and the other as workshop for the craft workers who create many of the unique pieces displayed in the main store on Harbour Road. WALKER BAY GALLERY Reminiscent of the days when the Philip Harper Galleries were at their peak, current owner of the Main Road premises of Walker Bay Gallery, Francois Grobbelaar, is reuniting the old Lembu area to increase his gallery substantially. Upstairs and down, the workmen are busy. Francois is coy about what exactly he plans but it will certainly include art. Watch that space... FOUCHÉ FINE ART GALLERY Newcomer to Hermanus – fresh from Greyton where she was for some years – is Adèle Claudia Fouché, practising artist and seasoned gallery owner. Her studio is in the Astoria Arcade that runs through from Main Road to Long Street – Milady’s is on the corner. The “ Tunnel” is an intriguing division of the space that makes room for smaller works, perhaps jewellery or special exhibitions of guest artists. She opened on Thursday 27 August and will be unofficially on show during the First Friday art walk so pop in on the eve of Friday 4 September and view her work. NEW GROUP GALLERY Royal Arcade is soon to host a quartet of experienced artists who have got together to showcase their works. Lize van der Walt, Christine Henderson, Jeandre Marinier and Erna Dry have earned their own space which will be known as The Hermanus Contemporary Gallery. They will invite other artists from time to time. HERMANUS ART CIRCLE This artists’ association is close to securing new premises after a happy spell in the bright retail space behind Pick n Pay parking area, now home to a prosaic bedshop. So, dear readers, gallerists are putting their money on the table and it’s up to us now to visit these feisty entrepreneurs who are underlining our town’s place on the artistic map.

FF decided on a sea theme for this month’s Artwalk in honour of White Shark Projects’ educational conservation initiative called The 21 Days for the Ocean. Comprising educational talks, beach clean-ups, tree-plantings, online competitions and their annual Fundraiser Dinner in aid of the South African Shark Conservancy, this year’s 21 Days for the Ocean runs from 1 – 21 September. he Mission’s House Gallery in Onrus will be extending their solo exhibition of organic sculptures and prints by Eugene Botes with the Afrikaans title “Been: Ode aan die Sandveld” until Saturday 12 September. “This is such a special collection of art with a profound relevance to life in contemporary South Africa that we’d like to urge people to come and experience it for themselves,” says Braelea Pope of The Mission’s House. Nicolaas Eugene Botes was born in 1973 in a small Free State town. After qualifying as an architect in 1999, he worked in and around South Africa with a specific interest in the African bush and lodge architecture. In 2011 Eugene and his family moved to a farm in the Sandveld on the West Coast, where he rediscovered his childhood fascination with animal skeletons and their beautiful sculptural qualities. By means of sculpting, modifying, adapting and transforming the skeletons (the past), Eugene examines the relationship between man’s past and present. enjoy the ride. While some use up all their energy fighting against it, it still remains a Dead Horse. ‘Kakebeenwa’ This illustrates the Afrikaner’s dilemma of how to protect its culture and history, and the struggle to keep it alive.

‘Arm was ek gister en nou is ek ryk’ This work illustrates how the Afrikaans language is continuously growing and enabling herself to move into the future. The poem ‘’n Handvol gruis’ by C. Louis Leipoldt illustrates the Afrikaners’ longing for their rich cultural heritage. ‘Engel’ An illustration of the way in which we often romanticise our past by remembering it as better than it actually was and forgetting about the bad things and failures. Fighting/riding a dead horse This artwork refers to a political system which no longer exists. Despite knowing this, we still ride the dead horse for our own personal gain. Some use the system to feed and clothe them while others do it for pleasure because they

‘Disability/child grant’ This artwork describes the sad truth of young women from poor farming communities in the Western Cape who deliberately drink alcohol and take drugs during pregnancy so that they give birth to foetal alcohol syndrome babies, which enables them to receive a larger disability child grant from the government. ‘Suffragator’ (Iemand wat stem in ‘n verkiesing) This work comments on the “voter” who is imported and placed in a specific region to vote for a specific party in the government elections. When the election is over, these voters are left to their own devices, without any support. They are referred to as “inkommers” as they do not belong anywhere and are like aliens on a strange planet.

f pink is not just a colour but an attitude then the liquid equivalent can be found in Rosé. This pink wine is here to stay with many shades and styles making it easy to enjoy. Rosé’s attraction goes beyond its look that is so suggestive of good times and summer. Blended to perfection it is no longer a syrupy, massproduced wine but rather a structured compilation exposing the characteristics of the grape varietal that it is made off. Rosé’s colour is the result of red grapes that are lightly crushed and left to soften with their red skins for a little while giving it a soft shade of salmon, an intense colour of strawberries or any shade in-between. The softening or maceration of the grapes can take a few hours or a few days depending on the effect the winemaker wishes to achieve. Winemakers love making Rosé and you will find a Rosé in all the corners of the winemaking world as any red grape can be used for the production. South African winemakers have mostly adopted the European style of Rosé making in recent years – opting for a drier style. With Shiraz in the blend the wine will almost certainly be on the drier side. The Overberg produces a quality selection. Two Rosés that can be singled out for their popularity that might have something

to do with their enchanting names are Rosebud and Bloos. Gabrielskloof’s Rosebud is made from Viognier and Shiraz fruit. With watermelon pink shades edged with lighter salmon hints this wine offers aromas of Turkish Delight and strawberry flavours. Hermanuspietersfontein’s Bloos has acquired a personality through the clever marketing tactics of her producers. She is a shy girl who blushes easily. Yet very well known and for all the right reasons. This good-looking Bordeaux style Rosé is dry and therefor suits the European palate that prefers a drier styled wine. Wijnskool’s new range of distinctively named wines includes Blom which displays a whimsical candyfloss pink. Made from Rhone grape varieties this wine is as dreamy on the taste buds as it is on the eye. Sommeliers appreciate Rosé for its food friendliness. South Africans will be pleased to know that Rosé goes very well with a braai. Eben Bezuidenhout, Sommelier at Grootbos, recalls a number of local Rosés that are guaranteed to suit the taste of diners to the five star private nature reserve. Casting his net close to home Bezuidenhout praises Black Oyster Catcher’s Rosé made in the popular Provence style with a blend that combines Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon offering cherry and

pomegranate aromas. From Bot River vineyards Beaumont produces Raoul’s Rosé, another versatile Rosé made from the Portuguese red grape Tinta Barroca that is generally used in the blending of Port wine. Unusual in the South African context, yet deliciously refreshing. Close to Hermanus in the Hemel-en-Aarde wine region, Felicité (meaning happiness), is made at Newton Johnson. The Felicité Rosé has been produced since 1998 and the current blend includes Shiraz, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc. Happiness is easy to acquire with a bottle of Felicité, enjoyed on its own or paired with a selection of seafood. Closely linked to the Walker Bay is Creation’s Whale Pod Spyhopping Rosé that tempts with whiffs of berries and rose petals. This wine is driven by Shiraz that adds structure and spice and blended with the late ripening Grenache contributing berry flavours. Vibrant on the eye and the palate. Rosé is indeed a wine for any time. From early morning celebrations, lunch through to sunset Rosé makes for appropriate and enjoyable drinking. Good times guaranteed!

fter a well-deserved break since selling Burgundy Restaurant, Rayno and Celia Rabie are at it again, doing what they love best. “I simply can’t imagine my life without a restaurant,” says Celia with her usual bright smile. “I just love food and I love looking after our clients. They are not just our customers – they are our friends; and this is not just a job to us – it’s our passion.” Having turned Savannah Café into one of the most popular eating spots in Hermanus after they arrived from Nelspruit in 2001, followed by the Burgundy which they bought in 2009 and elevated to new heights with their trademark magic touch, the Rabies have now embarked on a new venture called Betty Blue Bistro.

“We want The Milkwood to be a real neighbourhood restaurant, for the locals,” says Carol. “If we can achieve that we’ll know that we’ve succeeded. ”As former nurses from the UK, Carol and her partner Jo relocated to Cape Town in 2004, where they opened a boutique hotel called Derwent House in Tamboerskloof. Weekends spent in Onrus led to a more permanent arrangement when they bought a house here in 2012. The couple continued to run the hotel by living here and commuting to Cape Town, but when they adopted their son Jackson, now 21 months old, Carol and Jo realised that they needed to settle down in one place.

“We started from scratch with a blank canvas,” says Rayno of their new spacious premises in Main Road. “Celia adores white and natural wood, and that was our starting point.” Next came the beautiful hand-painted Moroccan floor tiles, the whimsical Parisian wallpaper, with added splashes of blue and a delicious buttery yellow to create an inviting space with a light, clean and fresh look. When it came to the menu, Celia was equally inspired to introduce a fresh new concept to Hermanus that has not been done before. Brainstorming sessions with her daughter Inemari, a food stylist who lives in France with her chef husband, led them to the versatility of pancakes, and new ways of incorporating innovative versions of this South African favourite in their menu.

Derwent House was sold earlier this year, leaving Jo and Carol free to concentrate on The Milkwood and a new boutique hotel in Onrus which is still in need of extensive renovations. Performing face-lifts is something they clearly do well, as The Milkwood’s new interior is light, fresh and clean, with accents of a deep ocean blue. The space has been redesigned and opened up, with retractable glass doors linking the interior to the exterior veranda with its beautiful views of the beach and lagoon. Additional bar counters have also been added to the restaurant veranda and the Beach Hut downstairs, which has been painted in soft Neapolitan gelato colours. “Onrus is a wonderful place to live and we realised that it deserves a good restaurant,” says Carol. Knowing that much depended on their chef, they were delighted when Bridget joined them from The Tasting Room at Stanford Hills Estate, where her singular style of cooking lured diners from far and wide. Inspired by her new state-of-the-art kitchen at The Milkwood, Bridget has designed a versatile menu which offers everything from breakfasts and tapas to kiddies’ food, light lunches and elegant dinners. For breakfast you can take your pick from various options that include Langkloof trout on sweetcorn fritters with bacon and roasted tomatoes, omelette with butternut, avocado and goat’s cheese, or Mexican eggs with spicy beans and chorizo. Light lunches range from country-style roast chicken pie, Thai steamed mussels, pulled pork tacos, grilled stuffed aubergine and lamb panzarotti to pan-seared squid with chorizo and spicy tomato sauce. And when it comes to evening dining, the menu offers classic Saltimbocca, coffee-roasted beef fillet, sweet potato gnocchi, duck breast, fresh linefish, Provencale rack of lamb and slow-roasted pork belly, followed by elegant and seductive desserts. he Whale Fringe Festival, now in its fourth year, has a fun-filled programme planned from 24 September to 10 October.

Return of the classics This year’s festivities see the return of a classical component in a collaboration between classical guitarist Nina Fourie-Gouws and the Hermanus Pro Musica Choir. This year’s theme is ‘Fynbos Creatures’, and displays around the hall will also introduce visitors to the fynbos creatures who share the flower-covered hillsides with us. As most of them are secretive and often nocturnal, you will be amazed to discover who they are and learn more about their lifestyle. Within the two marquees, visitors will have the opportunity to meet local interest groups who will encourage them to discover more about the environment around us, while talented crafters will present tempting items for sale. The entrancing alpacas will again make an appearance at this year’s Flower Festival, and snake-handling demonstrations and other activities will keep both children and adults entertained in the amphitheatre. Visitors are also welcome to join a guided walk into the Fynbos world along the trails in the Fernkloof Reserve. And no one will go hungry or thirsty, as delicious teas and lunches will be available throughout the Festival.

History of the flower festival Flower Shows have been held in Hermanus, with occasional breaks in the early years, for 67 years. They have been hosted by the local Botanical Society which has always appreciated the botanical heritage of the area and wished to bring its beauty to a wider audience. The first flower show was presented by the Hermanus Horticultural and Wild Flower Society, as it was then known, in Allen’s Bioscope Hall in town in 1924. Flower shows were held annually until 1939, when the Hermanus Horticultural and Wild Flower Society was dissolved. In 1960, when Fernkloof was declared a Nature Reserve and a curator had been appointed by the municipality, the society was revived mainly in order to assist in the reserve. The name was changed to the Hermanus Botanical Society, and one of the first projects initiated by the HBS was the Cliff Path project. The HBS Flower Show has been held annually since 1962 at various venues, including the old Birkenhead Hotel, the old Library Hall, the old Bay View Hotel and The Marine. In 1981 the event was hosted for the first time in the newly built Fernkloof Hall, and has continued every year since then. The initial concept of magnificent floral arrangements, which display the iconic proteas to their best advantage, has never been abandoned. However, over the years, greater emphasis has been laid on the individual flowers, as their number and variety are so astounding for such a small geographical area. All the named specimens on display must be individually picked as close as possible to the opening day; a huge challenge for botanical society members who often climb to dizzy heights to find those special specimens, naturally with their permits in their pockets! It is the natural beauty of Hermanus which draws both residents and visitors to the town, and the flower shows create an undoubted focal point for this interest. However, the HBS has lately broadened its approach to the hosting of a floral event by focussing on a different botanical theme each year. The annual flower shows have now become festivals, with many spheres of interest. Pollination, forest edges, wetlands, conservation through education, and plant explorers are but a few of the themes promoted during the past years. This year is the turn of the Fynbos Creatures, where visitors will discover creatures from ants to owls to leopards, and the many in between which share our world.

his year’s Funky Fynbos Festival (FFF) offers the opportunity to celebrate our unique floral heritage during a truly wonderful weekend getaway for the whole family from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September. Choose three of the four routes, which all have guides and recovery personnel on hand. The Cape Mohair Fynbos Trail Run presents a choice of three routes – the 30km King Protea Route, the 12km Pincushion Route and the 6km Platbos Route, departing from de Uijlenes on the Sunday between 07:40 and 09:15. The winners will receive great prizes, and there will also be medals and lucky draw prizes for all participants. On the Saturday visitors can enjoy wine tasting and relaxing music alongside a pop-up restaurant tent at Lomond wine estate while partaking in the fresh-water angling competition. Also on offer are guided walks in Platbos, where you will discover the magic of this ancient and southernmost forest in South Africa, or a guided walk followed by a picnic lunch in an enchanting setting at Fynbos Retreat.
