ebruary is the month of love and whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day on the 14th of February or decide to do something completely different, there is no escaping the fact that all of us find solace and peace in the company of our loved ones. This month we bring you our first issue of 2015, jam-packed with stories of a romantic nature. Love is indeed all around us and there is no better place to celebrate it than the beautiful Cape Whale Coast. So head to the Village Square above the Old Harbour, set yourself down at any of the various outdoor restaurants and coffee shops on the waterfront piazza, and relax with your copy of Village Explorer. and originality. The front page depicts one of his poignant paintings in the Age of Innocence series, called Off to Grotto Beach. Onrus brings a touch of loving magic and the nostalgia of yester year with a beautiful village wedding. Read more on page 6. Hermanus First Fridays Artwalk Join the 13 galleries in town when they stay open from 5-9pm on the first Friday of every month. The theme for the February Artwalk is Heart4Art, with the galleries collectively celebrating their love of art.

Gather your family, friends and fellow art lovers for this popular community event where you can meet and mingle, and discover the wealth of artistic talent in Hermanus while enjoying snacks and a sip of wine. Six of the galleries also house resident artists’ working studios, providing you with the rare opportunity to engage with the artists on a personal level.

Saturday 7 February RestFest at Restless River You are invited to spend the day on the banks of the dam on Restless River wine farm in the Hemelen-Aarde Valley to soak up some wine, music and good times with family and friends. Come and set up your spot from 10:00 and remember to bring shade, blankets, cooler box, ice, swimming kit (life vests are compulsory for all kids under 10), food to braai (lots of wood and braai fires will be provided) and whatever you are drinking. The first music act will kick off at 12 noon and run throughout the afternoon, wrapping up shortly after dark. Entrance is R100 per adult and R20 per child. Enjoy this inspiring performance among the canopy of trees under the stars at the magical Paul Cluver open-air amphitheatre. Gates open at 18:00 and the show starts at 19:30. Jesse Clegg live SA alternative rock sensation Jesse Clegg will perform at the Caledon Casino, Hotel, Spa & Entertainment at 20:00. Friday 20 February Fairway Fun Run This twilight Fun Run and Night Market is a fun event for the whole family and starts at Hermanus Golf Club at 19:30. Lighthouse to Lighthouse MTB Ride On Day 1 the route will take you along gravel roads, two spoor farm trails and through magnificent fynbos from Danger Point lighthouse near Gansbaai to the LAgulhas lighthouse. Wednesday 25 February to Sunday 1 March Walker Bay Bird Fair This 5-day fair is the first regional event of its kind in the Overberg and will feature prominent birders and environmental specialists from SA and the UK as well as top wildlife photographers who will host talks and workshops. There will also be bird-ringing and live raptor demonstrations, a bird brain quiz, a photographic competition, a boat cruise on the Klein River and other outings led by local expert guides. Romantic Page Turners

I

f your loved one is a bookworm, chances are that a good book will be welcomed more than a sentimental gift, flowers or chocolates. There are many classic novels that centre on love affairs, some doomed and ill-fated and others more heart-warming and uplifting. Eternally popular to this day even though they were written in the early 19th century are the novels of Jane Austen, (especially Pride and Prejudice) and the Brönte sisters, Charlotte (Jane Eyre) and Emily (Wuthering Heights). Other superb classics are E M Foster’s Room with a View and Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence (both were made into beautiful movies, the latter starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis). And who can forget Out of Africa, whose author Karen Blixen and her lover, the big-game hunter Denys Finch-Hatton, were portrayed by Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in the popular 1985 movie of the same name. For sweeping, passionate romance turn to the Russian authors Leo Tolstoy (Anna Karenina) and Boris Pasternak (Doctor Zhivago). These two novels both lead to a tragic end and more tears have probably been shed during the viewing of the classic movie of Doctor Zhivago, starring a youthful Omar Shariff and Julie Christie, than any modern romance film. But if a more contemporary love story is what you are looking for, here are some suggestions: The other side of you by Salley Vickers – After a failed suicide attempt following the death of the love of her life, Elizabeth Cruickshank becomes a psychiatric patient and her story unfolds during one long night’s uninterrupted session with her analyst, Dr David McBride. It is a heart-breaking tale of love and loss, opportunity and regret, grief and guilt, and the process of coming to know “the other side of you” by laying yourself bare to another with painful

honesty. It is one of those rare books that are impossible to put down and the story will linger in your mind long after you have reached the last page. Half in Love by Justin Cartwright – In this novel author Justin Cartwright examines love from a male point of view and the result is some of the most poignant descriptions of a man hopelessly in love. When Richard McAllister, a young up-and-coming British Minister, and married celebrity actress Joanna Jermyn’s passionate love affair becomes public knowledge, they are parted by the stress of fame and scandal. Your heart will ache for Richard as he flees to South Africa (where Cartwright grew up before he settled in London) to do research on the Boer War, and tries to come to terms with Joanna’s infidelity and the end of their love affair. The four letters of love by Niall Williams – This spellbinding novel is set in Ireland, where 12-year-old Nicholas’s life is turned upside down when his father forsakes his career in the civil service to become a painter. The family’s ensuing financial hardship drives his mother to suicide and years later, Nicholas is cast even more adrift when his father dies after setting his paintings, and the house, on fire. Only one work of his father remains, and he tracks it down to the home of a poet whose family is living with their own grief. Nicholas arrives in their midst on the day the daughter Isabel is getting married to a man she is disastrously ill-suited to. An achingly beautiful love story unfolds as the fate of Nicholas and Isabel’s families are entwined and illuminated by the healing power of love.

The Republic of Love by Carol Shields – Apart from living across the road from each other in the Canadian town of Winnipeg, Tom and Fay, two middle-aged, shell-shocked victims of the wars of the heart, don’t appear to have anything in common. She is a folklorist with a passion for mermaids who has never been able to commit while Tom, a late night radio DJ, has been married and divorced three times. What does unite them is their desperate need to love and be loved. When they finally do get together it is no fairytale romance but a tumultuous and at times awkward and confusing business which is described with charming wit and candour. This is a tender and unsentimental warts-andall novel about love in middle age. The bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller – This best-selling novel tells the unashamedly sentimental story of a brief fourday affair between an Iowa farmer’s wife and mother, and a free-spirited National Geographic photographer who turns up to ask for directions while Francesca’s husband and two teenage children are away attending the state fair. Isolated and lacking intellectual engagement, she is unable to resist the 52-year-old Robert Kincaid’s company and they fall passionately in love. Robert urges her to leave the farm with him but Francesca knows that their love is doomed as she could never cause such pain and humiliation to her husband and children. The book was turned into a popular film starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. Love in the time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez – In the late 1800s a young apprentice telegrapher Florentino Ariza meets and falls forever in love with the adolescent Fermina Daza. After a passionate and secret affair conducted mainly by way of letters and telegrams, Fermina rejects her ardent lover and instead marries the upstanding doctor Juvenal Urbino. True to his vow to love her forever, Florentino determines to wait for however long it takes. His chance comes when Juvenal dies unexpectedly 51 years, 9 months and 4 days later, and he resolutely starts courting her all over again in a race against age and death. This is a stunning and spellbinding novel by one of the world’s greatest storytellers.

Pushing the boundaries By Hedda MIttner

T

he versatility of Terry Kobus’s innovative artworks are a reflection of the way he lives his life – always on the lookout for something new and ready for a challenge. Because of his enthusiasm for embracing new and diverse experiences, his life took several detours before settling down to paint full-time in 2005. But after the success of his first solo exhibition a year later, Terry has not looked back. Terry grew up in what was then Southern Rhodesia before moving to South Africa to study fine art at Durban Art School and Wits, specializing in graphic printmaking. Over the next two decades he variously worked for a framing company, lectured at Wits, became a fitness instructor, did marketing and started his own graphic design company. Now happily settled in Vermont with his longtime partner Roelof after moving to the coast from Johannesburg in 2009, Terry has established his own studio, gallery and framery in Hermanus, aptly called Originals. Apart from an annual solo exhibition in Johannesburg, his works have been exhibited in France, the USA and across South Africa. Many of his artworks are part of international collections. “I put all of my life experience, both good and bad, into my art,” says Terry. “When someone buys one of my artworks, that experience comes full circle and marks the beginning of their journey. The new owner of the artwork must be able to grow with the painting and not only still like it in ten years’ time, but also discover something new in it over time, something they haven’t noticed before. That I believe is the true mark of a successful artist and artwork.”

Some of the many themes of Terry’s unique art include his popular Nguni cattle, trees studies, the age of innocence and pushing the envelope. The Nguni cattle grew out of Terry’s love for mountain biking which has taken him to several remote spots in South Africa where he often encountered these majestic animals. “I would take the cattle tracks and sit and watch them for hours. I found them so noble and gentle; even the bulls are totally non-confrontational. It is that essence of the Nguni that I try to capture in my paintings.” In his tree series, Terry was attracted to the gnarled, scarred and distorted form of trees that have been battered by time, by animals and by the elements. “I was attracted by the beauty and strength of these trees, which survive against all odds and still manage to grow new shoots and endure,” says Terry. “My tree studies are more than just a visual representation – they tell a story.”

In his Age of Innocence collection, Terry traded his trademark dynamic colour palette for a figurative series worked in graphite and oil paint. Depicting innocent moments from childhood, the blocky chunks of paint palette knifed onto the canvas are set against soft sepia tones. The works are rendered with a gentle charm and sensitivity, and the im-

ages unfold before your eyes like snapshots of a lost memory, evoking feelings of nostalgia in the viewer. Pushing the envelope celebrates the marriage of drawing and philately in an innovative series which sees Terry collecting and deconstructing old envelopes, some dating as far back as 1864. “With the emergence of the electronic age, the wonderful art of letter writing and posting a stamped, addressed envelope has all but ceased to exist,” says Terry. “Letters once were precious possessions, tied in bundles with silk ribbon and kept safe in a scented drawer. The sheer beauty of the envelope with its stamps and hand-written address is in itself a wonder to behold.” This series sees Terry working in various styles and media ranging from colourful contemporary studies to delicately old-fashioned ones, from whimsical to poignant and sentimental. The stamp and address is often an integral aspect of the envelope's design whether incorporated directly into the illustration or used simply to accent the artist's theme. ank lank gelede was ‘n troue in die gemeenskap ‘n gesellige affêre; die hele dorp was betrokke en deel van die romanse en die makietie. Almal het kom kyk en al was hulle nie op die gastelys nie, is stories en staaltjies lank daarna nog om etenstafels vertel. Almal kon saampraat…

Toe my seun Jaco en sy Melanie wil trou, kry ek die Onrus “village wedding” idée – Iets tussen Mamma Mia, My big fat Greek wedding, en die manier hoe dit lank gelede gedoen is; ‘n troue deur die hele dorpie, almal betrokke, gaste wat stap deur die strate, musiek, lag, liefde, vriendskap… En my brein begin oortyd werk. Ek voed my verbeelding met prentjies en stories, en ek begin praat met die mense van Onrus. Almal kom met idees, wil help, wil gee, het raad, moedig aan, lag saam, droom saam. En die “village wedding” word ‘n werklikheid. Die oorspronklike teetuin van die ou hotel in Onrus is nog ongerep met melkhoutbome en die sement-pote van die ou teetafels – en lyk geheimsinnig en interessant. Ek spoor die eienaar van die erf op, en sy raak saam opgewonde oor die idee van die trou-seremonie onder haar melkhoutbome. Die unieke klein Griekse kerkie, eie aan die “village”, is die perfekte plek vir die intieme teken-seremonie met massas kerse. Die Milkwood Restaurant, so deel van Onrus, is die vanselfsprekende keuse vir die fees, want die eienaars is vriendelik en tegemoetkomend, hul kos is heerlik en hulle koop in in ons idee van ‘n informele geleentheid onder ‘n groot wit

“We are in the business of creating something unique for each client,” says André. “Just as fashions come and go in the clothing and design scene, trends in the flower scene change to fit in with popular colours and design elements.” According to André, the flowers to look out for this season include Lilies, Tulips, Gerberas, Hydrangeas, Orchids and Roses. Popular colours for the month of love are red, hot pinks and shades of purple and orange. White flowers are symbolic of peace (maybe a good idea if you are in the business of apologising to your loved one) while yellow flowers indicate friendship. While red roses might be a bit pricey around Valentine’s Day and not last as well as other flowers, a mixed bunch with delightful colour combinations may be the way to go. Fynbos bunches containing Proteas are also a good choice, especially if you are buying for a man and prefer something less delicate. Celebrate the month of love with Rosé

I

f a meal without wine is like a day without sunshine then the month of love without Rosé is like a year without a celebration. Rosé adds colour, atmosphere and cheerfulness to any get-together – an absolute requirement for the summer season.

The fresh, light salmon tinge and juicy mouthfeel of Hermanuspietersfontein’s Bloos makes it acceptable to drink at breakfast. A joyful colour with berry hints marks this wine as the choice of drink for many Saturday morning market goers. Bloos is a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot with a layered taste structure. Carefree, uncomplicated sipping encapsulates Bloos. In the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Sumaridge produces a Rosé with components of a Bordeaux blend. Winemaker Gavin Patterson blends 62% Merlot for refinement with almost equal amounts of Malbec and Cabernet Franc. The result is a bouquet of strawberries and red forest fruits. Order a bottle or two with one of the delectable platters available at the cellar and lounge on the lush lawns overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Sumaridge’s Vintage MCC, The Wayfarer, is also classified as a Rosé as it’s made from 77% Pinot noir and 23% Chardonnay. Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge producer, Creation, makes sure that visitors have a suitable recreational replacement for whale watching now that the whales have left for southern playgrounds. Creation’s Whale Pod Rosé offers an unpretentious yet enchanting palate pleaser. Crisp watermelon on the eye meets berry flavours and rose petal aromas to follow through with a lively mouth-feel. This wine is a favourite on the wine lists of many restaurants, including Lizette’s Kitchen and Burgundy Restaurant in Hermanus. Domaine des Dieux has a clear, grapefruit colour Rosé that is only available at their newly renovated tasting room in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. It is well worth the trip to enjoy this lovely wine and the beautiful views across the vineyards and mountains. La Vierge will be launching their Rosé this month and according to winemaker Gerhard Smith it will be an unusual blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. Neither a red nor a white, Rosé is the perfect in-between wine to blur the colour lines and enable us celebrate the variety of nature and life. Summertime celebrations unquestionably require some Rosé and what better opportunity to drink pink than the month of love!

Whalehaven serves a Rosé crafted with South Africa’s very own varietal – Pinotage. Grapes are supplied from the Bottega family’s vineyards in Somerset West and brought to the Hermanus cellar where Reino Thiart crafts a light strawberry flushed wine with fynbos aromas. A delightful drink with a crisp end to a flavourful sip. Try this wine with some of the chocolate pairings available in the modern Whalehaven tasting room at the start of the Hermanus Wine Route. Newton Johnson’s Felicité epitomises easy drinking and delivers on expectations of fun and leisure. First produced in 1998 this wine is now made with Shiraz grapes cultivated on the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains where Villiersdorp borders Worcester. This Rosé is named after owner Felicity Johnson and denotes “happiness”. It is also a derivative of the Latin word “felicitas” which means luck or good fortune. Very appropriate then to label this wine for what it is ... a happy wine that will add a richness of warm memories.

Valentine’s Menu for two

Beetroot Carpaccio with Goat's chevre, pine nuts and thyme Ingredients

Method

1 cooked beetroot cut into paper thin slices 50ml balsamic vinegar 80ml olive oil (keep 30ml aside for dressing) 4 sprigs thyme Salt and pepper to taste 30ml pine nuts roasted 100ml Anysbos goat's chevre Dash of balsamic glaze

Marinade the thinly sliced beetroot in the balsamic and 50ml of the olive oil for about an hour before serving, with salt and pepper to taste. Cut thyme leaves finely and marinade in the remaining 30ml olive oil with a pinch of salt for 2 hours. Arrange the beetroot slices on a plate, with each slice slightly overlapping the other (about half a beetroot per

serving). Form a cornel of goat's chevre on top of each beetroot serving and sprinkle pine nuts over. Drizzle the thyme infused oil over the serving, and add salt and pepper to taste. Drizzle a dash of balsamic glaze over the beetroot and serve.

Line fish en papillote with braised fennel bulb, new potatoes and asparagus in beurre blanc Ingredients for the fish

For the fennel bulb

2 portions of fresh line fish filleted, skin on one side 30ml lemon juice 2 sprigs of dill finely cut Salt and pepper to taste 1 thinly sliced zucchini 2 A4 sized sheets of baking paper A few slices of lemon or lime for garnish

Slice 1 fennel bulb and braise in 100ml dry white wine, 50ml water and 1 sachet vegetable stock until soft and see-through.

Method

For the baby potatoes

Take the 2 sheets of baking paper and cover with a bit of olive oil or spray with Spray 'n Cook. Divide the thinly sliced zucchini and pack in the centre of each sheet.

Cook 3-4 baby potatoes and toss in 60ml butter, finely chopped parsley, salt and pepper to taste.

Put the line fish portion on top, and season with salt, pepper and freshly chopped dill. Sprinkle lemon juice over both portions and drizzle with olive oil. Fold baking sheet over to form a little closed parcel and bake for about 20-25 minutes depending on the size of the fish at 180 C.

For the asparagus Steam 4-5 fresh asparagus spears for a few minutes before serving until al dente.

For the beurre blanc I use Jamie Oliver’s quick and easy recipe. First of all, fill a vacuum flask with boiling water from the kettle. Put half a small white onion, finely chopped, in a small saucepan with 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar and 1 small glass of

dry white wine (I used Rosé) and boil down by three quarters. Cut 250g butter up into chunks and when the liquid's reduced, empty the flask and pour the wine and vinegar mix into it (through a sieve if you don't want the onion pieces in the finished sauce). Drop all the butter in on top of it and screw the lid on. Shake the flask vigorously for about a minute – all the butter will melt and merge with the wine and vinegar to make a lovely buttery sauce. Add a little salt if it needs it and keep the lid screwed on until you're ready to serve. Give it a little shake before your pour. How to serve Remove the fish and zucchini from the baking paper and plate on top of the braised fennel bulb. Add potatoes and arrange asparagus spears around the fish. Round off by drizzling the beurre blanc over the fish and garnish with dill and limes.

Grilled watermelon with mascarpone, white chocolate & almond ice cream and berry compote Ingredients

Method

For the berry compote

1 thick round slice of cold watermelon cut into quarters and de-pipped 1litre good quality vanilla ice cream 1 tub mascarpone 1 cup toasted almonds 1 slab white chocolate broken in pieces 1 cup bubbly 2 heaped tbsp blueberry jam

Heat griddle pan until searing hot. Grill watermelon until lines form and the sugary juices become caramelized. Re-freeze until serving.

Put 2 heaped tablespoons good quality blueberry jam and 1 cup of bubbly in a saucepan and reduce until thick but still runny.

For the ice cream

How to serve

We use home-made ice cream at ELL, but here is another version: Soften the vanilla ice cream a bit and mix in the mascarpone, toasted almonds and white chocolate. Place back into ice cream container and freeze.

Place watermelon and ice cream on a plate, drizzle compote over and garnish with a sprig of mint.

make a picnic of load shedding A

fter a welcome respite during the festive season, load shedding has again become a reality, much to the chagrin of households and businesses in the Overstrand. But with sunny days and sultry evenings upon us and the vineyards lush with new growth, three local businesses recently clubbed together to show us that there are far better things to do than complain!

So when is the last time you went on a proper picnic? To show us how it’s done, chef Tullishe le Roux from The Eatery in Hermanus put together a lovely picnic basket brimming with tasty bites, Carolyn Martin from Creation brought along a few bottles of chilled Whale Pod Rosé, and André Lambrecht from The Flower Scene contributed a hand-picked bunch of indigenous fynbos to create a magical celebration worthy of the month of love. Their destination was Skulpiesbaai in Kwaaiwater, a lovely spot to relax with family, friends and loved ones. But there are many more locations to choose from as Hermanus has no shortage of picturesque picnic spots.

This secluded beach is virtually unknown to anyone but the fortunate residents of Vermont. It can be reached by way of Yellow Finch Close or simply follow the VOS coastal footpath in a westerly direction. The little cove is sheltered by a high dune which children find irresistible and there are shallow pools to paddle in. It’s quiet and secluded, far from the madding crowd, and the perfect spot from which to watch the sun set.

Another cove which is more secluded and private than nearby Kammabaai and Voëlklip beach, is the little hamlet of Langbaai. It’s just a short walk through the Milkwood trees down to the beach from the parking area, so you’ll be spared a long trek laden with your picnic paraphernalia. Peace and quiet await you, with only the gentle sound of the waves lapping on the beach.

If you don’t feel like going home with everything covered in sand, head for the mountains. The picnic area at the entrance to the Fernkloof Nature Reserve is very child-friendly, with a jungle gym and swings to keep the little ones occupied while the adults relax in the shade. Combine your picnic with a leisurely hike, marvel at the abundance of fynbos and the breath-taking views across Walker Bay.

Sumaridge This winery on the Hermanus Wine Route offers one of the most idyllic spots surrounded by the vineyards and mountains of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Call Lisa at their tasting room to book a platter and enjoy it in the garden with a bottle of ice-cold Sumaridge Rosé, or ask for a picnic hamper and pick a spot on the manicured lawn under the shade of the willow trees on the banks of the dam. The platters offer various choices of artisan breads and biscuits, local cheeses, seasonal fruit, patés, smoked meats and trout. seriously stylish picnic food recipes

I

f you really want to impress your Valentine, why not try your hand at these impressive and delicious recipes for a cream cheese and salmon tart (which pairs perfectly with the Wijnskool Vloekskoot Sauvignon Blanc) and these pork knuckle “cupcakes” which go down a treat with Wijnskool ??? Recipes courtesy of Suné Eksteen.

Smørgastorta aka ‘Snorkeltert’ (Bartho’s name for it!) Base Line a spring form pan with foil and spray well with nonstick spray. Crumb approximately 2 cups of rye bread, mix with 2-3 tbsp melted butter and press down in prepared pan. Filling 500g cream cheese 500ml sour cream / créme fraiche 125ml each of chopped dill, red onion and pickled cucumber (preferably sweet/ sour with dill) 6 hardboiled eggs, chopped (keep some aside for garnish) 250g chopped smoked salmon or trout

1 sachet gelatine dissolved in 250ml hot water To garnish Chopped dill, red onion, the reserved chopped egg, salmon roses or cleaned, steamed prawns (or both) and caviar (optional). Method Cool gelatine down until cold but not set. Mix all ingredients together and pour on top of the base in the spring form pan. Chill in the fridge until set. Carefully loosen the pan and transfer the torta/tert to a serving dish. Garnish as elaborately as possible and serve with a green side salad.

Pork knuckle terrine I prefer to make to make a big batch of this terrine as it is rather time consuming and the same effort anyway. It usually forms part of our “cold meat selection” for summer. We avoid using commercial cold meats as far as possible for health reasons. The terrine freezes well too. Ingredients 3kg pork knuckles Bunch of green herbs (thyme / rosemary / origanum / flat leaf parsley) 2 onions, halved 2 large carrots, cut into pieces Few peppercorns Few bay leaves Salt and lemon juice to taste 1 sachet gelatine Method In a big pot, cover pork in water (or a combination of water and white wine if you like) and boil together with herbs, onion, carrot, peppercorns and bay leaves until the meat

comes off the bone. Skim off foam while the meat is cooking. Remove the solids from the pot with a slotted spoon and leave to cool. Meanwhile, line a big sieve with cheesecloth and pour the cooking liquid (stock) through the sieve to clarify the stock. While still hot, dissolve gelatine in the stock and leave to cool. Now separate the meat from the rest of the ingredients and shred. Add the meat to the stock, season with salt to taste and add lemon juice until you are satisfied with the acid balance. Spoon the mixture into moulds (I usually use

cupcake size moulds for individual portions) and put into the fridge to set. Serve with a selection of mustards and a green salad. As an interesting alternative, use Eisbein instead of pork knuckles and add a cup of finely chopped parsley when adding the salt and lemon juice... et voilà! Very French jombon et perseille.

enige wynliefhebber en wynkenner was verbaas oor Bartho Eksteen se aankondiging aan die einde van verlede jaar dat hy die tuig neerlê as keldermeester by Hermanuspietersfontein. Waarom juis nou, op die kruin van sy veelbekroonde loopbaan as wynmaker, ‘n verandering maak? Bartho glimlag net breed en sê: “Ek het nie opgehou om wyn te maak nie – ek het dit immers vir jare lank gedoen met Bartho Eksteen Family Wines, voordat ek by HPF begin het. Die tyd was net ryp vir ‘n verandering. Jy weet, die lewe is ‘n leerervaring en nou gaan ek terug skool toe!” En dié skool se naam is Wijnskool, wat onststaan het toe Bartho, in samewerking met Diner’s Club, ‘n wynakademie begin het by Boland Landboukollege. Dit was kort nadat Bartho as Diner’s Club Wynmaker van die Jaar aangewys is in 2010. Die doel van die projek was om leerders bloot te stel aan wynmaak as ‘n loopbaankeuse, en om kennis en verantwoordelikheid onder jong wynverbruikers te bevorder. Dit is hierdie konsep waarop Bartho nou verder wil uitbrei. Die Wijnskool-reeks sluit in ‘n Sauvignon blanc, Shiraz en Veraison MCC, en teen die einde Maart word die Bartho Eksteen Signature Range vrygestel – ‘n nuwe Rhône-styl Rosé, ‘n ligte houtstyl Sauvignon blanc, ‘n Shiraz/Mourvedré/Grenache versnit, ‘n Noble Late Harvest (as die seisoen dit toelaat) en

en die nuwe Wine Entrepreneur Support Programme gevestig gaan word. “My hele gesin is betrokke by hierdie nuwe projek en dis lekker om as ‘n span saam te werk. Dis my geleentheid om iets terug te gee aan die volgende generasie,” sê Bartho. Fine music for FynArts

V

isitors to Hermanus FynArts 2015 will be treated to an eclectic mix of some of the best in a range of South African arts. The event, a fusion of Arts Fest and Winter School, now in its third year, will run from 5 – 16 June.

The Opening Concert will feature brother and sister Ammiel and Avigail Bushakevitz (born in Jerusalem, raised in South Africa and now living in Europe) as soloists with Camerata Tinta Barocca, a Cape Town based baroque ensemble. Violinist Avigail won first prize at the Unisa National Strings Competition, and numerous other awards. In 2014 her schedule included recitals with the Essenz Quartet in Berlin, where she is currently based, and touring with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra from Spain with Daniel Barenboim, renowned pianist and conductor (who had been married to equally renowned cellist Jacqueline du Pré). Pianist Ammiel drew international attention in 2013 when he was the first recipient of the Richard Wagner prize on the occasion of Wagner's 200th birthday. He has performed as soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist across Europe, North America, Africa and Asia. “Three professors on Three Pianos” is a première for Hermanus FynArts. Francois du Toit will perform with Franklin Larey and Albie van Schalkwyk, who has transcribed music for three pianos. And they will bring their own pianos with them. Albie, acknowledged as one of South Africa's finest chamber musicians and music educators, is currently Associate Professor of Piano at the the University of Cape Town and Head of Chamber Music. Francois, a highly regarded soloist, has distinguished himself in South Africa and abroad since the age of 15. He is Associate Professor of Piano at the UCT and Head of Practical Studies. Franklin, the third of these acclaimed UCT Associate Professors, has won several awards, including first prize at the 1991 Young Chang International Piano Competition and third prize at the 1996 New Orleans International Piano Competition. From this year Hermanus FynArts will recognise the diverse origins of immigrants to South Africa. The programme will therefore include a number of events of one country's contribution to the arts in general, as well as to South Africa and its way of life. In 2015 this FynArts initiative kicks off with the Italian Connection not only in art, but also in food, wine, vintage films and music; hence the “Festival of Italian Music”. In 1980 award-winning South African winemaker Giorgio Dalla Cia produced one of South Africa's first Bordeaux-style wines, Meerlust Rubicon. Since then he has established his own Grappa distillery in Stellenbosch in 1996. As part of the “Wine Plus” series

of tutored tastings, festival goers will have the opportunity to taste and appreciate this famous Italian fortified wine with the master himself. In “Italian Futurism (1909 – 1915) – art and architecture”, one of the many FynArts talks, this period of Italian art will be discussed by Marilyn Martin, independent curator, writer and lecturer. During the festival visitors are encouraged to walk the Hermanus Art Amble and visit 14 galleries, many of them owned and operated by the artist themselves. The amble offers visitors the unique experience of meeting and talking to the artists as well as watching them create new pieces. We might be the oldest farm in Stellenbosch but we are by no means antiquated. The past 333 years have only been the beginning of the story for Blaauwklippen,” says Rolf Zeitvogel, cellar master and managing director at this historic cellar nestled on the slopes of the Stellenbosch Mountain.

As a run up to the final exhibition, Blaauwklippen is reaching out to local primary and high schools as a community initiative donating 333 canvasses, as well as art supplies to selected Stellenbosch schools. When finished, some of the 333 works of art will be exhibited from February 2015 at Blaauwklippen.

As one of the oldest wineries in South Africa, dating back to 1682, the atmosphere at Blaauwklippen is youthful and vibrant, the traditions of the past co-exist peacefully with the modern technology of today. The estate is a living testimony to their motto: “Inspired by the past, passionate about the future”.

Rolf has managed to keep Blaauwklippen in the limelight – both as a favourite local wine destination as well as an internationally recognized producer of premium wine. In particular Zinfandel – the varietal that has become synonymous with Blaauwklippen.

“To celebrate 333 magnificent years of wine history an art competition themed Blaauwklippen 1682 - Before & After, will visually capture the cultural heritage of this magnificent working farm,” says Rolf. Artists are invited to submit entries in various mediums, including painting, print making, photography, drawing, multi-media, illustration and sculpture with the theme as inspiration. Only the first 333 entries will be accepted. From the 333 entries, 33 finalists will be selected for a 3 week exhibition at Blaauwklippen during September 2015. For the winner a cash prize of R3 333 is up for grabs. “We are extremely excited to start a year of celebrations with this art competition. And we expect the 2015 vintage to be exceptional. We will also launch an exciting new product to mark our 333rd anniversary, but 2015 will boast special events throughout the year.”

Zinfandel originated on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia and is also grown in the Puglia region in Italy where it is known as Primitivo. After finding its way to the United States in the 1800s it has become one of the most popular Californian wines. “Although Zinfandel is not easy to grow, it is a unique and exotic cultivar that holds a special place in my heart,” says Rolf. Apart from Zinfandel, Blaauwklippen also produces a highly acclaimed range of wines that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Malvec, Viognier, Chenin blanc and Sauvignon blanc. Add to that the grappas, the Before & After Aperitif, the pot stilled brandies and one can soon see after 333 years Blaauwklippen is exploring the full picture of what is possible with grapes. A New Musical Home for Fyndraai Restaurant M

usic and food have always been inseparable partners at Solms-Delta wine estate in Franschhoek, and with the recent relocation of its Fyndraai Restaurant to the estate's old stable building, the exploration of heritage food and rural music is now under one harmonious roof.

Adjacent to the estate's newly opened Music van de Caab centre, Fyndraai is now in a beautifully renovated space enlivened with notes of musical decor. And Fyndraai's chef, Shaun Schoeman, is cooking up even more heritage food inspired by fresh indigenous produce grown in the Dik Delta Culinary Garden. Schoeman's menu has been renewed and refreshed with dishes like sticky glazed pork belly with Cape gooseberry and pickled spekboom, and a traditional Kaapse snoek parcel basted with lemon and wilde roosmaryn blatjang.

Since 2009, Fyndraai has enlightened South Africans and foreigners alike by showcasing the genuine food traditions of the Cape. Afrikaner boerekos, which has strong European and Cape Malay (slave) influences, mixes with ingredients first used by the indigenous Khoe nomads who lived in the Franschhoek valley thousands of years ago.

The cuisine is also inextricably linked to the Dik Delta Culinary Garden, which occupies a two-hectare plot on the Solms-Delta estate. Created in 2010, the garden is planted with buchu, spekboom, veldkool and many of the other 400 or so plant species that nourished the San – the Cape's first people - and cured their ailments.

Schoeman is taking braising further these days with a twice cooked sticky-glazed pork belly. First, the belly is braised for several hours in duck and chicken stock, cooled overnight and pressed in the fridge. The next morning it is sliced into strips, which are seared skin side down in a pan to crisp and colour, and then hit with a gooseberry reduction. The whole dish is finished with a wild sage and lemon thyme sauce, and served with butter mash and pickled spekboom. Schoeman calls it "the most amazing combination ever."

Renata Coetzee, the doyenne of South African cooking, has played a major role in the development of this garden, from the sourcing of plants to imparting her extensive knowledge about how best to prepare them in the kitchen, to Schoeman. Out of the Coetzee/Schoeman collaboration has come an exciting contemporary interpretation of traditional ingredients and dishes.

"It's a more modern and grown-up Fyndraai in all respects, which I'm really loving," says Shaun. The move has freed up the former restaurant space, which will now serve as the Solms-Delta Wijn van de Caab Tasting Room. There, the entire range of wines will be available for tasting either inside or outside on the veranda and lawn. The new Fyndraai is housed in what was once the old stables and workers' accommodation on the farm, and is significant for its association with the current and past farm workers, some of whom were born and raised in the building. The musical theme is carried from the neighbouring Music van de Caab centre into the restaurant. Colour photographs of the various musical ensembles and events that form part of the Music van de Caab project, line the restaurant's walls. Displayed alongside them are black and white photographs selected for their musical content from the Cape Archives, the Paarl Heemkring Collection and the Bleek & Lloyd Collection of the UCT Libraries Visual Archives. Now that the garden is more established, it can supply Schoeman with an abundance of seasonal indigenous vegetables and fruits, as well as the herbs that have formed Fyndraai's intense flavour palate. Inspired by numnums, kei apples and veldkool, Schoeman is stretching his culinary reach, combining new ingredients with new and expanded cooking techniques, as well as refreshing his plating style and presentation. Schoeman talks animatedly about the new menu: "We are poaching a warm prawn and cured snoek terrine, infused with lemon pelargonium and wild garlic, that is rolled and poached, then coated in kudu biltong dust, sliced and warmed in a pan and served with my latest creation

"I'm also focusing more on smoking, for example, Karoo ostrich, an indigenous Khoe animal. We first pickle the fillet with salt and garden herbs, then smoke it ourselves in gentle low heat over wood shavings and more herbs from the garden. It's served as a cold starter, with a numnum dressing and fynbos greens." Quickly pan-frying asparagus brings out the best in this truly seasonal vegetable, and at Fyndraai, Schoeman makes a mean main course out of a mix of regular asparagus and indigenous veldkool, which are currently in season. The asparagus is sautéed with wild garlic, wild mushrooms, mint pelargonium and nettles.
