Stellenbosch Kunsgalery, Ryneveld Plaza, Winkel 1, Ryneveldstraat 34, Stellenbosch. A whole Village under one roof
The Village Square centre is affectionately known as “the heart of Hermanus”. Situated in a prime location in the heart of the old fisherman’s village just above the iconic Old Harbour, the centre is conveniently close to all the major tourist attractions and accommodation establishments. In the double-volume arcade you will find a light and airy space alive with shoppers who are attracted to the eclectic mix of retail available from more than 30 specialty shops that include fashion boutiques, curio and gift shops, jewellery stores, beauty, massage and hair salons, home décor and art galleries. Each has its own unique character and offers specialty items unlike anything that can be found in commercial shops with mass-produced merchandise. Another major attraction is the waterfront piazza at Village Square, where both residents and tourists mingle and meet at the outside tables under colourful umbrellas. The centre has one of the biggest concentrations of restaurants in Hermanus where some of the town’s most popular chefs are serving up excellent cuisine ranging from breakfast and lunch to sundowners and dinner. In front of the piazza is the open-air auditorium with its kiddies’ play park overlooking Walker Bay. This is a popular look-out point for whales and also a focal point of the many festivals and special events that take place in Hermanus during the year, including the hugely popular annual Whale Festival. Other amenities at Village Square include a photo shop, two foreign exchange outlets with postal service, an ATM, a lift and rest rooms – a whole village under one roof catering for all your needs! Village Square is open seven days a week and trading hours are from Monday to Saturday 09:00-17:00, and Sundays from 10:00-15:00. Several of the restaurants open earlier for morning coffee and breakfast, and stay open for dinner in the evenings. For more information, visit www.village-square.co.za

New hope for our seabirds T
he official opening of the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) in Gansbaai on 26 February 2015, marked a monumental milestone for the conservation of the African penguin and other marine birds in the Overstrand region. It also marked the realization of a dream for Wilfred Chivell, founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT), who drove the APSS project in conjunction with tourism partners Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Cruises. A custom designed, world-class, marine bird rehabilitation centre, the APSS will provide temporary rehabilitative care to diseased, displaced, injured, oiled and abandoned marine birds, with a special focus on the endangered African penguin. Marine bird rescue, rehabilitation and release form part of the management plan to conserve and maintain African penguins and other marine bird populations along the South African coastline.
Featuring a unique rehabilitation area with a specialised floor, laboratory and clinic, the APSS rehabilitation techniques will be honed to afford birds individual treatment with minimum stress. This maximises their rehabilitation and affords them the best chance of survival when released back into the wild. Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom, who spoke at the event and officially opened the centre, said that projects of this nature are about the common good – good for the environment, good for the community and good for the country as a whole. Also among the guests attending the launch were the Overstrand Mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, and representatives from corporate sponsors Volkswagen South Africa and Grindrod Bank. “The support we received from our partners and affiliates, as well as the donations of materials from various corporates to complete the APSS have been a big vote of confidence in our work through the Dyer Island Conservation Trust,” said Wilfred Chivell. “We are grateful to have sponsors and partners who recognise the importance of this facility in the conservation of our marine birds. We are the voice of these species that cannot speak for themselves.”
Wilfred Chivell (third from left) with the Blue Fund representatives Mr Stuart, Dr Venter and Mr Hankinson.
“The partnership with DICT has been one of our most rewarding sustainability projects we have been involved with in South Africa,” said Petra Hoffmann, Director: Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Group South Africa. “The impact that the DICT is making with its work with Marine Big 5 – African
Penguin, Great White Shark, seals, dolphins and whales will have meaningful impact for generations to come. Our Think.Blue philosophy of ‘small changes can make a big difference ‘complements the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary slogan of ‘every bird counts’. We trust that our sponsorship of the APSS will make a difference in ensuring that every bird counts.” Grindrod Bank have recently partnered up with Wildlands Conservation Trust to establish The Blue Fund, an initiative solely dedicated to fund coastal conservation projects. The APSS represents the first of such projects in the Western Cape. “We are proud to invest in our ecological heritage in partnership with organisations that are actively involved in the conservation of South Africa’s rich natural environment,” said Mike Hankinson, Grindrod Ltd Chairman.
Every bird counts When the first official cencus on African penguins was done in 1956, there were an estimated 150,000 breeding pairs. The next 50 years saw an 80% decline, with only 26,000 breeding pairs counted in 2009. And while there were 25,000 breeding pairs of African penguins on Dyer Island in 1975, there are now only approximately 600 left – a decline of almost 90%.

Ernest about books
“
Our bookshop is not only a business but an adventure,” says Beth Hunt, who together with husband Noel, has been the owner of Hemingway’s Bookshop in Hermanus for nearly 20 years. One suspects that Ernest Hemingway would have approved of this uniquely charming shop which is often compared to the legendary bookshop, Shakespeare & Company, located on the Left Bank in Paris and often frequented by the groundbreaking American author himself. Just like the title of his famous 1936 memoir about his years in Paris, Hemingway’s too is a “moveable feast” of nostalgic treasures and memories. It all started in 1995 with a small bric-abrac shop in Harbour Road known as the Mad Hatter, but that all changed after a friend deposited a trailer load of books he no longer wanted with book-lover Beth. Her bookshop gradually grew from these humble beginnings and today it has become a landmark in Hermanus and an internationally recognized source of rare, unobtainable and selected out-of-print books. The shop also stocks an eclectic mix of bric-a-brac, ephemera and a comprehensive range of Africana, antiquarian and collectable books in all genres.

“Living on an increasingly busy planet of IT innovation and disruption, Hemingway’s is a gentle reminder of that magic moment, a special treat returning to a world of books where authors have stood the test of time,” says Beth. “You can be assured that at Hemingway’s of Hermanus we are ernest about good books!”
The owners are as original and quirky as their creation. Noel, who is also a skilled artist and confirmed bibliophile, joined Beth full time at the shop in 2004. It comes as no surprise that Beth is also an accomplished writer - her coffee table book ‘Hermanus’ was published in 2008, and she was placed second by Nobel Laureate J M Coetzee in the Pen Studzinski Literary Awards. She was also a finalist in the Short Sharp Stories Award in collaboration with the annual Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

E
at restaurant in Hemel-enAarde Village has been a firm favourite among local diners and visitors to our town since well-known chef Petri Hendriksz opened its doors in 2010. And it’s been business as usual since November last year, when Eat’s new owner, Sheena Bruce, took over this popular establishment where diners have come to appreciate and enjoy the quirky character of Eat, its welcoming indoor and outdoor spaces and the innovative dishes created in the kitchen. “It’s been a rather seamless transition,” says new head chef Connel Massyn, “as Petri and I share a similar style of contemporary cooking, using fresh seasonal produce.” In fact, it was Petri who recommended Connel to Sheena when she took over the restaurant. With a financial background that includes solid experience in risk management, Sheena was more than prepared to take care of the business side but says she knew that having a good head chef was pivotal to the success of her new business. With Connel by her side and supported by their competent kitchen staff, most of whom have been with Eat

Arendskloof - R95.00 Full bodied, with lots of citrus and vanilla flavours. Lightly wooded, fermented in French oak barrels. Seven Springs - R116.00 Dry, crisp and smooth with an abundance of fresh ripe white peach and melon aromas. It has a beautifully balanced palate with concentration. The Stellenbosch Reserve - R129.00 Aromas of fresh citrus, lime and hints of lemon zest come to the fore, with elegant pineapple notes that support the initial tropical impression. Delaire - R139.00 Elegant with layered nuances of vanilla, peaches and honeycomb. A hint of minerality adds to lingering finish. Elgin Ridge Organic - R110.00 Unwooded with white fruits, pears, peaches and apples on entry. Dry refreshing mid-palate. The finish is clean and balanced. Lieben - R216.00 - Bouquet of wild flowers, litchi and almond. Rich layers of lime and grapefruit. Elegant minerality fills that palate and leaves a lingering honeycomb finish laced with fragrances of new oak. Special offer: 5% Discount on the Chardonnays above as well as any Chardonnay from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley for a mixed case of any six bottles Chardonnay during the month of March.
Connel was 16 when he moved with his family from Johannesburg to Hermanus where his grandparents, Peter and Sheila Musson, once owned the Bayview Hotel. After graduating from Warwick’s Chef School, he was one of the top five students who had the opportunity to work in London at the luxury Red Carnation Hotel Group. Returning to South Africa in 2004, Connel gained further experience at local restaurants in Hermanus and Stanford while teaching at Warwick’s Chef School as a junior instructor. He also spent three years in Johannesburg where he worked in catering as a personal chef and also gained valuable experience as manager and chef at various ala carte restaurants. Now married with two young daughters, Connel was delighted to settle back in Hermanus two years ago as the head chef at Paradiso before joining Sheena at Eat. “We have kept Petri’s menu but there will always be a few surprises,” says Connel with a smile. He and his team like to experiment and come up with new and exciting dishes that feature among the weekly specials. They also offer a Pensioner’s Menu every day of the week and often have live music evenings over the weekend.
Eat head chef Connel Massyn and owner Sheena Bruce
“Connel has a Pythonesque sense of humour,” says Sheena with a smile. “This business is hard work but Connel is very even-tempered and likes to have fun. It’s important to us that we have a healthy, happy and motivated team. Connel runs a free and fair kitchen and we give each member of our kitchen staff the chance to create a dish for our weekly specials.” Sheena’s hands-on approach is evidenced by her presence at the restaurant every day – morning, afternoon and evening. “Some clients still look for Petri and don’t recognize me as the new owner – they probably think I’m the ageing hostess,” Sheena chuckles.
Eat’s cheffing team – Innocent Cengule, Bianca de Gois, Phelokazi Kibido and Tracy Machigomora
Eat is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:30 until late for lunch and dinner, and from 11:30 until 15:00 for lunch only on Sundays. Call 028 316 2348.

Any day is a good day for Chardonnay by Frieda Lloyd nay flourishing in the Hemel-en-Aarde area and resulting in one award after another more than 30 years after the first plantings. Leading international wine magazine Decanter featured Hemel-en-Aarde Chardonnay in their March 2015 edition as those ranked among the best in the world.
W
ith some misunderstanding cleared and a few style adjustments made the reputation of Chardonnay has been repaired and the signs are there that Chardonnay is in vogue again with sales increasing steadily over the past ten months. This grape varietal is celebrated bi-annually at De Wetshof with an impressive presentation relaying the inspiring message about Chardonnay. Chardonnay is the fifth most widely grown grape variety planted and found wherever wine is produced. With origins in the southern region of Burgundy and a village named Chardonnay, the varietal was originally smuggled into South Africa by Danie de Wet and Jan Boland Coetzee in a chocolate box in the early 1980s.
Esteemed wine journalist Andrew Jefford was the guest speaker at the 2014 Celebration of Chardonnay and his speech emphasised the greatness of Chardonnay. Jefford feels the great lesson of the Chardonnay revolution of the last thirty years is that excess ambition in one’s approach to Chardonnay will be harshly punished. The reason why ABC came to stand for Anything But Chardonnay was the showiness of excessively ripe and heavily oaked Chardonnay. Jefford emphasised that the skill in Chardonnay craftsmanship lies in restraint. This skill has obviously been mastered by the Chardonnay producers of the Hemel-en-Aarde area judging by the number of awards received continuously. Lovers of Chardonnay can opt for the heavier, creamier flavours brought by barrel aging or the light freshness
This undisclosed endeavour led surprisingly to the Vine Improvement Association fast tracking the improvement of Chardonnay vine material through experimentation. Hemel-en-Aarde Chardonnay and Pinot Noir specialist Hamilton Russell Vineyards also indulged in smuggling plantings of Chardonnay into the country because of restrictive KWV wine management rules at the time. The risk was well rewarded with pioneering plantings of Chardon-
of un-oaked Chardonnay. The factor of wooding or not wooding can make a huge difference to its flavour and aroma. Vanilla, butter and coconut are all indicators of oak maturation – a method favoured by the winemakers of Hemel-en-Aarde. Bouchard Finlayson’s Peter Finlayson believes that a Chardonnay character is best achieved through the compliment of maturing in French oak barrels. Yet Finlayson also crafts a Chardonnay Sans Barrique. Sans Barrique means that there was no barrel aging applied in the production of the wine, making the wine not too dissimilar from a Sauvignon Blanc but with less green flavours. The ripeness of the Chardonnay berries plays a role in that a less ripe berry lends to greener apple flavours and very ripe fruit brings out fig and pineapple flavours. Another well-received unoaked Chardonnay is the Felicité Chardonnay made by Gordon and Nadia Newton Johnson. Chardonnay is best matched with foods that are enhanced by its full, round character and can be overpowered by strong, sharp dishes. It is best to work with the flavours in the bottle. Dishes with a butter or nut oil foundation or those incorporating toasted nuts balance a wooded Chardonnay. A wooded Chardonnay also pairs better with mild and sweeter seafood such as crayfish while un-wooded Chardonnay complements mussels and oysters better. Creation chef Warwick Taylor is known for his accurate food and wine pairings and matches the wooded Creation Chardonnay with prawns accompanied by an avocado puree and pea shoots. For a dessert duo Taylor makes a honey and rosemary scented crème brûlée with baked almond sticks. The local variety of Chardonnays include those produced by Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Ataraxia, Bouchard Finlayson, Newton Johnson, La Vierge, Sumaridge, Domaine des Dieux, Creation, Crystallum and Whalehaven. New Hemel-en-Aarde producer, Restless River, recently joined the Chardonnay force and if you enjoy a wooded Chardonnay you should waste no time to try a bottle of their finest. Tomorrow is another Chardonnay.

hile an outing to Stellenbosch inevitably includes a visit to one or more of South Africa’s most renowned wine estates, a leisurely amble through the streets of this historic town recently revealed the hidden charms of its quirky little shops, art galleries and street cafés. It is on the pavements of Stellenbosch’s oak-lined streets that one gets a real sense of that old-world European flair that makes this town such a sought-after destination. In front of the beautifully preserved historical buildings, tables, chairs and colourful umbrellas spill over onto the pavement where locals, visitors and tourists meet up for a cup of coffee, a glass of wine or a light meal as they watch the world go by.

Street cafés are a particularly charming European tradition, and one that I was happy to see is not only alive and well but flourishing in Stellenbosch. The pavements were packed, and the happy throng of people meeting up and relaxing in the shade bestowed an irresistible festive atmosphere. With autumn approaching, I urge anyone who hasn’t savoured the pleasure of Stellenbosch’s outdoor café culture to head out to the historic centre of Stellenbosch and simply stroll the streets. You’ll be spoilt for choice – but here are some of our happy discoveries.
Taste Bud – 44 Ryneveld Street This is a happy, homely place where friends meet to catch up and relax. Situated in the historic Skuinshuis, the outdoor area is shaded by huge old oak trees. Meraki – 42 Ryneveld Street Popular among the young and trendy, this eatery with its all-white contemporary décor serves fresh homemade food with an elegant twist. Schoon de Companje – c/o Bird & Church Street What started as De Oude Bank Bakkerij has grown into a collaboration of artisans, and now includes a coffee roastery and juice bar, a boutique wine shop, local brews on tap, artisan ice cream, a deli selling organic produce and an ethical butchery in addition to owner Fritz Schoon’s popular freshly baked breads and pastries. The Blue Crane & the Butterfly – 146 Dorp Street You will feel right at home at this warm, family-friendly eatery which gets its enchanting name from a bedtime story the owner wrote for his son. They serve good, honest food made with love, and the menu includes gourmet sandwiches, innovative salads and excellent
5 Ryneveld – 5 Ryneveld Street (you guessed it!) This unique restaurant has five themed rooms that include a library and a lounge with eclectic retro furnishings, and outdoor seating on the pavement. leap to loving it
T
he leap to fully appreciate Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyard is a short one as the estate energetically reveals its real spots to visitors. Greeted by an impressive piece of art of a leopard on a ridge the wine cellar and restaurant is elegantly placed with wide expanses of grass surrounding it. A vast open space of cheerful light and inviting décor draws one from the entrance into a venue that includes impressive public and private wine tasting areas, a stateof-the-art cooking school that can host 22 people, a cooking demonstration area and a delightful shop. “Visiting Leopard’s Leap should be a friendly, informal, educational experience. There is enough formality when it comes to wine. Leopard’s Leap is a family-friendly, laid-back and fun experience,” says CEO Hein Koegelenberg. And indeed he is spot on. From the elegantly appointed tasting area to the wide stoep with its contemporary open spaces the venue invites you to sit down and 'kuier'. Chef Pieter de Jager creates culinary bliss with his offering of succulent meats done to perfection on a state-of-the-art Rotisserie – expect juicy chickens, tender pork belly with crisp crackling, fall-of-
the-bone lamb neck and the tenderest of beef. Complementing the selection of meats is a harvest table filled with salads, side dishes and breads where you can serve yourself to heart’s content. With a special selection of children options no one should leave on an empty stomach. Desserts include a tempting choice of individual portions such as cake lollies, baked mini-cheesecakes and baby meringues. All the dishes are made with the freshest of ingredients and include vegetables and herbs from a biological garden a stone’s throw from the kitchen, so no worries about processed and unhealthy bites. Hein explains that since its inception, Leopard’s Leap has had a vision of building a truly international brand. Today, the wines are exported to more than 40 countries with a versatile range that offers excellent quality at affordable prices. The green grass, manicured gardens, child-safe water feature and play park create the perfect setting for a family looking for a day out. The leap to falling in love with Leopard’s Leap is a short one, but a visit to the farm will be a long fun-filled one. www.leopards-leap.co.za|021 876 8002
Culinaria Food and Wine Pairing experience - As the 2014 winner in the Drinks International Best Food and Wine Matching experience a Friday morning Culinaria Food and Wine Pairing is a must. The tasting consists of the six wines in the Leopard’s Leap Culinaria Collection, each paired with an example of an ideal food partner. All the wines are based on traditional French blends and the pairing shows these wines with food that illustrates the skill of food and wine pairing. It is the ideal opportunity to enjoy well-matched combinations and getting to know the fundamentals behind making informed dinner table choices.

t Chelsea Village you will find a tranquil oasis just off the bustling Main Road of Somerset West. If you are tired of crowded malls and the all too familiar brand shopping environment, you will just love meandering through the unique little boutique shops in this relaxing and picturesque environment surrounded by trees and water features. Taking pride of place in the centre of Chelsea Village is the classic and intimate Chelsea Café and the contemporary coffee shop Chelsea Bean, where a unique “pasture to plate” experience awaits. Both venues are owner-managed by Marle Jacobsohn and partner Fran van Tiddens, who invite you to take a break, unwind and recharge your batteries while enjoying the solid food philosophy behind their delicious offering of tantalizing eats and coffees. After studying food technology and nutrition, Marle gained valuable experience in product development and management both locally and in the UK where she worked for ten years. Upon her return, she bought Chelsea Café in 2011. When dedicated foodie Fran, who has a background in advertising and marketing, joined Marle last year, she was given creative licence to live out her dream of creating freshly prepared dishes from the best locally sourced natural gredients.
what they call it. “We want people to think about what they are putting into their mouths,” says Fran. “Know where it comes from and know what’s in it.” Marle and Fran value quality and the environment over the convenience of processed additive-laden products that are the norm on grocery shelves today. Having suffered from food allergies all her life, specifically preservatives, additives and colourants, this is not only a food philosophy but a way of life for Fran. “We have our own vegetable and herb garden here and we support our local farmers and suppliers who use natural artisan techniques. You will not find anything on your plate here that I can’t eat myself.” Their farm-to-table eats are freshly prepared on the premises and include delightful breakfasts, home-baked cakes and confectionary, aromatic freshly ground coffee, gourmet sandwiches, burgers, salads and pastas. Fran also has a soft spot for what she calls “slow food”, and people travel far and wide for her lovingly prepared curries and bredies. Retail products that are for sale at Chelsea Bean include home-made jams, granola, cordials, chutney, preserved fruits and coffee beans.
As a result of this collaboration, Chelsea Café and Chelsea Bean’s menu reflects a fad-free approach to cooking and eating that emphasizes fresh nutrition-dense food. “Real food”, is Chelsea Café and Chelsea Bean run daily specials with a continental flair and also cater for intimate functions, parties and events that can be hosted at either venue.
