hen the weather turns warm, the first impulse is to migrate outside to spend as much time as possible watching spring take hold in our gardens, listening to birds chirping and savoring the quintessential American meal barbecue. With Jamie and Craig Greer's daughter Crystal set to receive her college degree in the spring, Jamie wanted to put together a special celebration for the whole family. Given her preference for casual entertaining, Jamie felt a barbecue buffet would be the perfect crowd-pleaser. The Greer home is geared toward casual entertaining: the kitchen opens onto the living areas for easy access and the screened porch is just steps away, added on after the family moved into the home last spring.
Jamie laid out an array of ribs, pulled pork, cucumber and tomato salad, baked beans, potato salad and fresh fruit on the counter from Southern Girls BBQ in Alton. "We love good food," Jamie said. "And, we like to entertain in a way that everyone feels very comfortable." To give her guests more space to sample and mingle, she put sumptuous wedges of owner Keith Davis' peach cobbler, made from
his grandmother's recipe, and a confectionary-colored pitcher of pink lemonade on a table out on the porch. To make the celebration seem more like a picnic, Jamie placed pots of azaleas and kalanchoe and papier-mache butterflies as her centerpiece from Seasons Garden Center in Alton. "Crystal is the first person to graduate from college on my side of the family," Jamie said. "We're really proud of her, and this is a big deal for us."
Southern Girls BBQ Peach Cobbler 2 16-oz cans of peaches 1 stick of butter 1 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla flavor 3 cups flour a pinch of salt 1 cup shortening 1 cup cold milk Boil peaches; add butter, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla flavor and simmer for 10 minutes. For the piecrust, mix flour with a pinch of salt. With pastry blender, cut shortening into flour. Slowly add milk, mixing thoroughly. Cut piecrust into strips. In a 13 x 11 pan, add half of the peaches and top with pastry strips. Repeat above steps with peaches and crust, arranging in a lattice pattern. Preheat oven and bake at 350 degrees for 45 min.

Welcome Wildlife to Your Yard
S
pring in the garden is one of my favorite times of the year. This spring, in particular, is exceptional given my new role here at The Gardens at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The opportunity to steward the development of this tremendous community resource into the future is definitely something I am looking forward to with great anticipation. As I observe the spring emergence in The Gardens, I am drawn not only to the spring blooms, but also to the increase in activity on the wilder side. Just as the buds of trees and shrubs are plumping to the promise of their perfect combination of day length and temperature, the sights and sounds of wildlife
being active in their own favorite garden spaces is all around. The trilling chorus of Spring Peepers, the surfacing pond turtles and returning migratory songbirds all affirm that spring has arrived. A spring rite of passage for most of us, who like to play in the dirt, is a stroll through our favorite nurseries and garden centers. As
FOOD - Select a blend of native plants that provide nectar, seed, and fruits to provide a food source that spans the seasons. Prairie blazing star, Liatris pycnostachya, is a tough, sun-loving stunner frequented by bees, butterflies and other insects summer through fall. Black haw viburnum, Viburnum prunifolium, is a stout, glossy leaved shrub that is a multiseason gem in the garden. Showy white summer flowers support pollinators, and the small, dark fruit persists into the winter, a favorite of birds.

gardeners, we have a unique opportunity to actively support wildlife in our landscapes. With a small investment and a little forward planning, you can invite birds, butterflies, frogs and other beneficial critters to your own backyard. Get started by addressing the basics of food, water and shelter.

SHELTER - Plant a variety of grasses, shrubs and trees for foraging, nest-building and cover. Including a few evergreens provides good cover in the winter months. Little bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium, is a perfect grass to use in a prairie planting and stands all winter, providing nice texture in the garden and cover for wildlife. Install a few birdhouses to encourage cavity nesters like Eastern bluebirds and wrens to raise broods where you can watch their progress. Spend a little time sprucing up your yard this spring with wildlife in mind and enjoy the show year-round.

the couple to immediately move their search for a new home into high gear. "We literally had nowhere to go," Jamie said. "We weren't actively looking because the market had been so bad." Fans of Century Builders' work, the couple decided to make an offer on a display home in The Seasons development in Godfrey, and they were delighted when they learned the home would be theirs. "We're looking at this as our retirement home," Jamie said. "It's very comfortable, more open than our last house and it doesn't
have a huge yard that we need to maintain. We also have a first-floor laundry room, which is nice." In their previous home, Jamie painted the walls in distinctive hues: their kitchen was red, the living room a chocolate brown and the family room sage. "We had to move really fast, and I decided that I loved the fact that all the walls are neutral," she said. "I can bring in different color accents whenever I want and change pillows,

chic From page 9 "I like the colors to flow from room-toroom," she said. "One of my favorite colors is black because you can just do anything with it as a backdrop." Her eclectic decor, which is simultaneously traditional and casual, mixes a French country aesthetic with modern, fresh patterns. Rooms are filled with natural light. "We want our family and friends to feel at home here," Jamie explained. "When we first moved in, my son was sitting at the kitchen counter and his shoe scuffed the wall. I didn't want anyone to worry about this kind of thing so we went picked out tile that weekend and my husband had it up in a couple of hours." One of Jamie's favorite decorating elements is adding florals to a room, whether it's large white wisteria stems cascading from a vase on her dining room table or small pots that add a vibrant pop of color in a bedroom. "How can I not love florals?" Jamie laughed. "I worked at both McConahey's and Josephine's for years!" Stemming from her enthusiasm, Jamie said she just fell into giving people advice on interior design.

"I don't have a true business; it's just word of mouth," she said. "What I really love to do is help people transform their homes for Christmas.' The Greers' home was featured on Pride Inc.'s Holiday Home tour this past December, with many people enjoying Jamie's creative decorations, in particular admiring a lighted tree branch festooned with crystals on her dining room table.
Despite the many elegant touches, the home is very much a place for their grandchildren to visit and spend the night. One of the guest bedroom's closets is laden with toys for their use. "We live and entertain very casually because we want everyone, including our grandkids to feel comfortable," she said. "For me, it's all about good food on a buffet so that people can move around and talk and the kids can play."

Sun-filled sanctuaries By Kathie Bassett Paul and Janice Fay of Bunker Hill, have a sunroom that serves as a transitional space, allowing year-round enjoyment. It was built by Amber Abert Siding.
Amber Abert enjoys using her own gabled sunroom as much as possible. To access her backyard, she installed a full wall of doors opening out onto her patio.
John and Barb Yunker of Holiday Shores have a second-floor sunroom positioned next to a deck, which added living space and enhanced their view of the lake. It was built by Eagle Home Improvement.
Ralph and Connie Nisinger of Godfrey use their sunroom as a year-round family room, using it as a TV room. It was built by Eagle Home Improvement.
indows allow rooms to serve as transitional spaces to the outdoors, satisfying our urge to connect more closely with nature when it's too cold, too hot or just too dreary to be outside. "Fundamentally, sunrooms bring light and sun inside," said Amber Abert, owner of Amber Abert Siding in East Alton. "They are really a kind of room addition with lots of windows, and they are designed to reflect the homeowner's personal style." As a result, sunrooms vary in size, style and function to meet the individual needs of the homeowners as well as fit into their allotted budget. Sunrooms are relatively quick and comparatively inexpensive additions to undertake, Amber said. The rooms can be either custom-built or purchased as modular units depending on the desired placement. "I try to help people build their dream," said Amber, who recently took over running the 50-year old family-owned and operated business. "I ask people to tell me about the end result they want to see and how they want to use the new room, and I try really hard to make that happen." Over the last 20 years, the current generation of sunrooms evolved from the non-insulated Florida room popular during the 1980s to a more versatile space that can be used year-round, she explained. More often than not, homeowners use their sunroom as a family room, adding comfortable furnishings to make the space a friendly and pleasant place to gather, entertain, or even take an afternoon nap. For Paul and Janice Fay of Bunker Hill, Amber and her experienced crew designed and built a gabled sunroom, with sliding windows and doors for easy access to the backyard. "Sunrooms are typically used for either three or four seasons, depending on whether heating or air-conditioning has been installed," said Brian Sitze, a sales associate at Eagle Home Improvement in East Alton. For Ralph and Connie Nisinger of Godfrey, Eagle Home Improvement installed a large "four seasons" sunroom attached to the back of their house on the ground level, creating an inviting spot to watch TV. They have clustered armchairs
W
and a couch on one side, placed a dining area on another and centrally positioned their TV to maximize viewing. Windows can be partial, floor-to-ceiling and double-hung or sliding, depending on how the homeowner intends to use the space, vastly opening up possibilities for how the room can be furnished, Brian said. "We've done a wet bar, and a customer recently asked for a fireplace to be included," Brian explained. "With hi-efficiency thermal pane windows, we can install a variety of flooring materials - carpeting, tile or Pergo - because the rooms are completely sealed." The design process usually includes an on-site visit, drawings and a consultation before work on the project can begin. Length of installation time varies depending on whether the room requires a cement foundation to be poured or is placed on a deck. John and Barb Yunker of Holiday Shores wanted their sunroom, also installed by Eagle Home Improvement, to be accessible from their second floor kitchen, and it is strategically positioned to open up their living area to enhanced views of the scenic lake. An adjacent deck serves as a bridge between their interior and exterior spaces, with stairs going down to the newly created covered patio underneath the sunroom. When designing a sunroom, a prime consideration is how the addition will impact not only the interior space but also the exterior architecture. Homeowners Don and Cathy Nevels of East Alton called Amber after a tree fell on a pre-existing solarium and asked her to design an "all seasons" sunroom that would utilize the foundation already in place and blend well with their ranch home's minimalist faรงade. "The custom sunroom modernized their home by giving them more living space," Amber said. "Comparing the addition to their old solarium, the Nevels told me the sunroom is now very comfortable to use, and they consider it a part of the house rather than some place they go every once in a while." In designing her own sunroom, Amber installed a full wall of doors to have an expansive view onto the adjoining patio. "I just love sitting in it," she said. "We use it all the time." Home Style

A: Mohawk Smart Strand carpet has passed all kinds of foot traffic and durability tests including being installed in the rhino enclosure at the Birmingham Zoo. Smart Strand carpet strands have a unique structure that bends and rebounds quickly to resist crushing and matting even with excessive traffic. If it can stand up to the weight of a rhino, it can stand up to your family. Q: I have children and pets, is there any carpet that is truly stain-proof? A: Permanent stain and soil protection is built directly into the fibers during manufacturing of Mohawk Smart Strand carpet. It is there for life and will never wash off, walk off or wear off. Smart Strand carpet actually resists coffee, Kool-Aid and mustard stains; even pet urine won't stain. Clean up is simple too…just use hot water. Sounds too good to be true? Don't worry, Mohawk Smart Strand is backed by a lifetime pet urine, stain and soil warranty. Q: I understand the Smart Strand carpet will not stain but what will keep spills from going into my carpet pad? A: We recommend all our customers use memory foam pad with moisture barrier under their Smart Strand carpet. The moisture barrier keeps the spill from entering the pad. The spill is easily cleaned up from the carpet with hot water. Traditional pad still performs well, but carpet clean up may take several more attempts to remove the stain from the pad.

"We don't have to shimmy around the boat," he said. "It's a four-bay garage with oversized doors." With an abundance of boats, trailers, lawnmowers and more, space had become an issue, necessitating the need for expansion. "The boats needed to come home," Napp said. "They were living at other people's houses. The attached garage was filling up with the canoes and kayaks, and we wanted to get a golf cart to ride over to The Nature Institute.
From previous page "My son will be driving soon and we wanted additional space so we wouldn't be opening the car doors and hitting the lawn mower." The guys' getaway was a well-thought out project, with a 4-inch drop to allow water runoff, homemade shelves customized for
Allan's needs, and octagonal windows on each side to provide the "stable look" he was wanting.
The organized garage allows Allan and his children the space to spread out and work on projects, either for the home or for school. Besides fishing, a favorite family pastime is going to see Cardinal baseball and Mizzou football games.

utdoor "rooms" can fill a wide variety of needs - whether the goal is to lounge, entertain, dine or simply escape into another "world." When Amy and Phil Alfeld of Godfrey began planning their garden 15 years ago, they started their remarkable transformation with the notion of simply adding curb appeal and creating an enclosed space for their beloved Corgis to romp - and then their traditional backyard evolved into something extraordinary. In lieu of a pool surrounded by a link fence, a formal garden with statuary and trimmed boxwood hedges stands at the garden's center, with other distinctly themed gardens radiating around it. "Although our lot is only 100 by 300 feet, I'm proudest of the fact that each garden room has a different 'feel' to it," Amy said. "The flow makes it seem much larger, like it's three acres. "When we first looked out the backdoor, we saw piles of junk and just the pool, " Amy said. "Once, the fence was up to enclose the perimeter, we just began to create our vision." The travel enthusiasts took their inspira-

tion from the most celebrated gardens in England, including Stourhead and Sissinghurst. "It's not illegal to steal an idea," Amy said. "Phil is every bit the designer that I am." Once cleared of debris, the first step was to lay brick pathways, so they enlisted the help of Dale Lewis of Lewis Construction. Rather than clustering plantings around a large sea of grass, they created beds that organically flow into one another, using archiSee Garden, Page 18

In consultation with Dale, the Alfelds collaborated in designing a deck between the house and the pool that serves as a dining area, accented with brightly painted furniture and a riotous mix of colors and patterns. "I love color," Amy said. "A lot of people are afraid of it, but I'm not." Early in the scheme, they built the belvedere, a gazebo-like structure with three entrances, on the garden's central axis, creating a destination at the opposite side of the garden once the pool had been removed. With a passion for historic architectural forms, the Alfelds' inspiration for the belvedere was one they saw at Wakefield Plantation in Virginia, the birthplace of George Washington. The bold color scheme a dark green frame with a chartreuse lattice is Amy's choice, derived from a striking combination she saw used at Ulysses Grant's home in St. Louis. "When I first asked Dale to paint it, he said it wouldn't work," she laughed. "But, he acknowledged that it looked really terrific
A brick path connects the various gardens, leading past the Alfeld's German haus and biergarten into the belvedere, inspired by one they saw at Wakefield Plantation in Virginia. The belvedere is now painted several shades of green. Many of the garden ornaments are vintage pieces.

once it was done." Completing the space, Amy put a colonial bench and hung 1920's English brass on the lattice -work. With "America" complete, they couple then added "Mexico" and "Germany." See Garden, next page
garden FROM PREVIOUS PAGE The inspiration for "Mexico" was handmade, vibrantly-patterned Talavera pottery, a traditional Spanish pottery transferred to Mexico via the Conquistadors. Complete with a gurgling fountain and a fireplace, the room is populated by whimsical figurines of lizards, frogs, snakes, crocs and Chihuahuas. "We like sitting in the garden rooms at night and having a drink together with our neighbor Cliff," she said. "Depending on our mood, we'll sit on the deck, go to the belvedere or into 'Mexico' or 'Germany.' "'Germany' is our extravagance," she said. The piece de resistance of their garden, "Germany" has an authentic Bavarian haus and biergarten, surrounded by a garden of wildflowers. "It's absolutely magical," Amy said.
Amy and one of her beloved Corgis enjoy the garden. The connecting gate allows for frequent visits between the Alfelds and neighbor Cliff Davenport. Enclosed by a trellised wall, “Mexico” is a panoply of color, with vivid flowers and ceramics filling the outdoor room.

Palette potential: shades of color soften space By Danette M. Watt
Bonnie and Ed Vega's great room serves as the home's central focus, unifying the house by a shared color scheme that incorporates different shades of the same hues.

onnie Vega knows what she likes in a house. She and her husband, Ed, have built three of them over the years and this one, she says, "is the most open house I've designed." The 3,800-square-foot house has a contemporary feel with strong lines, custom paint on the walls and a mix of carpeting and porcelain tiles on the floors. Art the couple has collected during their travels overseas and to southwestern U.S. is on display throughout, including a Japanese kimono hanging on a wall in the hallway. The house sits on nearly three acres in a secluded neighborhood in Godfrey. The Vegas’ lived in St. Louis for 30 years and after a couple years in Kentucky, moved to the River Bend. They found their property by chance. "We knew nothing about the area," Bonnie said. "We just happened to see a small ad in the paper." The open floor plan on the upper level includes a dining room, living room, kitchen and breakfast room as well as three bedrooms and two baths. A short hall off the kitchen leads to a half-bath, pantry and a laundry room where the Vegas created indoor kennels from vinyl fencing for their two dogs, Storm, their 13-year-old Gordon Setter and Zephyr, their 4-year-old English Springer

A 20-foot-by-12-foot screened deck lets the Vegas enjoy the outdoors without being bothered by bugs. Stairs leading to the lower level have glass panels instead of newel posts, a design element Bonnie saw elsewhere. Downstairs is a library, kitchenette, a guest bedroom suite, another full bath and a hobby/storage room.
Bonnie's favorite room is the library with its custom-built shelves by David Stine. He also built the custom entertainment/display case in the living room. Bonnie favors deeper shades of color rather than pastels and chose purple, green See Palette, on next page

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE and gold with touches of red as her overall color scheme. She had Buhrmester Paint and Wallpaper in Edwardsville custom mix the paint she used, including one she calls "Bonnie Sage." "It's sage green with a gray undertone. After many attempts, they created the perfect color. I've gotten a lot of compliments on it," Bonnie said. She used three shades of the green in the house. The public areas of the upper level have the darkest shades on the walls and the medium shade was used in the lower level rooms. The master bedroom and bath walls are painted a custom plum color and the remaining two bedrooms and the hall are painted gold. "The gold isn't working out," Bonnie said. "All the metal surfaces are nickel so I'm thinking of changing the gold to gray. Fortunately, paint is easy to change." Bonnie's learned a few decorating tricks over the years. For instance, using a lightly tinted color on the ceiling relieves the stark contrast with painted walls and makes crownmolding stand out. All of the ceilings are painted in the lightest shade of each room's color. "I didn't put drapes on my windows until they came out with contemporary rods and grommets. They work really well with silk drapes," she said. "And lamps have to be contemporary looking, too." They are all nickel with white shades. The Vegas' home was part of the Pride 2011 Christmas tour and Bonnie says the house got many compliments and joked, "We had even had people offering to move in with us."

A modern master By Kathie Bassett
A
s part of a larger remodeling project, Dale and Karen Keller of Glen Carbon turned their en suite master bathroom into a practical, personal and stylish space. The soft cream and black marble floor and neutral walls serve as a sophisticated backdrop for the Art Deco-influenced design, emphasizing luxurious woods and discrete splashes of color. Starting with the idea of moving Dale's closet space from the bathroom into their bedroom suite, the Kellers' vision of the project expanded once they began to see the possibilities for the gabled room. "I wanted the bathroom to have the illusion of floor space so we planned to use every inch to achieve maximum head room," Karen said. "We started by moving out Dale's closet and changing it into a toilet area." The next priority was to reconfigure the shower area, moving it from a position nearer the bedroom door to a spot next to the smaller, freestanding tub on the opposite side of the room. Key to the design was placing a glass-tiled T-wall to divide the bath and shower from the dressing and toiletry area and extending the slope of the walls lower. "I didn't realize how much I disliked the existing shower until it was gone," Karen said. "It really closed off the space visually." The new shower is not only larger but also has a traditional shower door entry as well as an open entrance to allow easy movement between the bathtub and shower. Karen, who has diabetes, uses the custom-designed double door dresser to keep her medications and supplies organized by insert drawers made to required specifications. Constructed from oak, the piece brings in subtle texture through its horizontal grain, with its deep, rich stain adding a sense of warmth to the space. The white painted drawers add contrast, complementing not only the

overall color palette but also the geometric pattern on the floor. The vanities are made from rift-sawn oak, which appear almost gray because of the black and white striations produced by the grain. Designer and friend Pamela Calvert of
Savvy Surroundings (in St. Louis) assisted in fabric, tile and color selection as well as all furnishings in the bathroom and bedroom. For cabinet design and bathroom configuration, Karen consulted Renna Barnes of Inspired Design and Decor in Glen Carbon, whose company also built the cabinetry. "We put our heads and tape measures together to discover what we could get done," Karen laughed. The Kellers' son Adam and business partner TJ Gray of Keystone Construction and Development in Glen Carbon served as general contractors for the project. "It really was a group effort. We gutted the entire bathroom and bedroom without consulting an architect," Karen said. "We really didn't know what to expect until everything was down to stud walls. At that point we were winging it and relied on the input from everyone working on the project, and we welcomed all suggestions." The accent rug adds a vibrant green focal point for interest, with the same hue carried through in towels and other accessories. A refrigerator, used for insulin storage, is hidden in a smaller cabinet adjacent to the larger double cabinet. Every design detail was considered, including the doors connecting the different spaces, which incorporate frosted glass panels in dark stained frames, along with the burnished pewter door handles that accentuate the room's nuanced colors. "Before making any selections, Dale and I knew that we wanted the bathroom to be efficient and well organized," she said. "But, we also enjoy the feeling that the room emits and find it very soothing and inviting, so we are extremely happy with our remodel."

Rustic yet modern: Furnishings elevate woodworking to art By DANETTE M. WATT David Stine can fashion a tabletop from a 60-inch-diameter cross-section of sycamore or craft an elegant four-poster pencil post bed. Is he an artist or a woodworker? He acknowledges both labels come with baggage. "I've struggled with that question for a long
time," he said. "Everything (I create) has to be functional and have utility. I can build something that is pretty, but it has to be userfriendly." David, 40, creates custom-designed furniture from large pieces of wood, hewing and planing each slab to bring out its natural beauty until they are pieces of art in themselves. One tabletop he made was from a piece of walnut 50 inches across. A table can

cost between $5,000 and $25,000, depending on its size and the type of wood. A self-taught craftsman, David grew up on a dairy farm in Jersey County. His interest in furniture began early when he watched his grandfather disassemble furniture so it could be refinished and reassembled, often using only hand tools. His interest in working with large pieces of wood began when he visited a King Tut exhibition and was impressed by the immense objects in the collection. In 1995, while a law student at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., David founded Stine Woodworking and discovered his niche building furniture by hand. WORKSHOP FROM PREVIOUS PAGE became his passion and life's work. After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, David and his wife, Stephanie Abbajay, moved with their two children, Oskar and Willa, to a 40-acre farm in Dow. "We fell in love with the farm the first time we saw it in the summer of 2001," Stephanie said. "It's a beautiful location, and it had a really big footprint, which is what David needed to expand his business." David built a kiln and sawmill on his property and harvests trees from the mixed hardwood forests that have been in his family for four generations. The man who founded Dow built the house in 1871. "Our interest was more historical," Stephanie said. "Jerry McIntyre (of McIntyre Construction) helped us come up with a game plan." With the exception of a few pieces of furniture, David crafted all the wood furniture, flooring and cabinetry in the home. The dining room originally had six or seven doors leading from it, including to the kitchen and a bathroom. The couple enjoys entertaining, so the room was opened to the kitchen and its walls were reconfigured, with a breakfast nook and mudroom added. "The kitchen took six months to do, but it's the showpiece of the house," she said. "It's my favorite room, and I can look out the window and see my farm."

Style fusion:
Home blends modern and retro design
Through creative design, Polly Curtain transformed an outdated Alton bungalow into a modern home, with an open kitchen. Her favorite feature is the kitchen floor made from recycled wood, laid on a slant and stained five different colors. By LAURA GRIFFITH olly Curtain, originally from Kansas, moved to Alton in the mid-1990s. At the time, she was "just passing through," with plans to join the military and leave her belongings in storage. But when her father's cancer recurred, she decided to stay. Living in an outdated bungalow that didn't suit her style, it has taken Polly years to have the home the way she envisioned it for her own family - her son, Lucas, 10, and daughter, Livia, 5. Plenty has been changed about the home, with the most recent renovation project focusing on the kitchen. "I hated my kitchen before. It had old carpet, and I was looking at wood paneling. The wallpaper had ugly green eagles and stagecoaches," she said. "I took the wall between the kitchen and the dining room out, because I needed more room. We took the plaster down to the studs, ripped up the floors, and then we put in new cabinets and an island, granite counter tops, a new floor and stain-

less steel appliances." Her favorite feature is the floor. It's made of recycled wood, taken from a church her contractor, J.D. Rider, leveled in Medora, and re-stained in five different colors of her choosing. "I told him what I wanted - that I had seen a similar floor on 'International House Hunters,'" Polly said. "It was underneath the carpet and painted chocolate brown, so he planed the wood down and stained it." The kitchen project lasted about six months. During the worst of it, the Curtains
stayed with Polly's mother and ate out a lot. "The project wasn't something we budgeted for, but it was well worth it," she said. "We have all of the holiday meals for my family over here, and we used to have it on my little kitchen table. I would do all the meal prep on a counter space that was about two-and-ahalf feet by two feet. It just wasn't practical." The house originally was built in the 1940s, and Polly is the second owner, she said. See Fusion on next page

cabinetry for every room two locations: n. shamrock, east alton, il 618-259-7434 FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Since moving in, she has put in all-new windows, painted each room and renovated the front porch. She also laid a concrete driveway to replace a gravel one, and added gardening and landscaping to the now-quaint home, 12 years in the making. Polly has created an eclectic mix of modern design elements with retro accents. She has incorporated furniture that displays strong, clean lines with shag carpeting and lots of color splashes. There's a blue living room, green kitchen and orange hallway. The porch flooring is chartreuse, crediting this vibrant palette to the fact that she grew up in a house where every wall was white. One of her favorite, most personal pieces in the home is a yellow vinyl chair she got when her grandmother died, refinishing it in a brown-and-white geometric print. If given the chance, she would undertake the renovation again - and she has advice for anyone thinking of remodeling their home. "Be prepared that it's going to get worse before it gets better. (during construction), everything is chaotic and uncomfortable, but it does get better and, in the end, it is totally worth it," she said. She took her time selecting every facet of the project and also looked around for the best deals available rather than picking from a selection at a generic home improvement store, she said. "If you're going to put that much of your time and money into something, then make it 'you,'" she said.
