If you build them better, you can warranty them longer.
Building or buying a new home is always a big decision, and you want to work with a company you know and trust. There are dozens of factors to carefully consider, but in the end, the planning, packing and waiting is all worth it. Having a custom-designed home means that your personal tastes, preferences and lifestyle are taken into consideration from the ground up, making your space a perfect combination of function and style. At Crawford Homes, they’ve been creating beautiful custom builds for

Regina residents since 1979. Since their early years, Crawford Homes has been busy building an average of more than 100 homes annually. Their experienced team knows what it takes to get the job done right, and they’ve witnessed Regina grow into a beautiful city that people want to call home. Their three decades of experience has led to more than 4,000 homes, thousands of happy home owners, and dozens of industry awards for their innovative and creative designs. In those 30 years, Crawford Homes has perfected their business and created an excellent team of drafters, contractors
and salespeople to ensure that their clients have the best experience building their homes. They’ve also built relationships with the best building suppliers and manufacturers so that their homes are made of the finest quality products available. While Crawford Homes prides themselves in the aesthetic beauty of their homes, they also take great care to ensure each home is built to exceed modern environmental and structural standards. Every home is built to standards that exceed Energy Star, comes with their Crawford Homes Exclusive Gold Warranty, and meets and exceeds the best business standards.
When building with Crawford Homes, customers get to be involved every step of the way. With modern technology, it’s easy for drafters and designers to keep in touch with customers and share plans. With email, smart phones, tablets and computers, customers can always be in the loop with their build, and can easily reach their contractors to make those subtle changes that make their homes unique. No matter what size of house you’re looking for, Crawford Homes can make the best of your space. With more than 80 different floor plans to choose from that range from 831 square feet to more than 3,000 square feet, they have a
layout that will work for you. Of course, complete customization is always an option. You can work to create your own unique plan, or make custom changes to pre-existing plans to make the space your own. This year, Crawford Homes has made some exciting new additions available to many of their custom builds. In some areas of the city that feature both front street and back alley access, Crawford Homes’ designers are attaching double garages to the front of their builds. Crawford Homes will build a completely detached “man cave” in the back for husbands who need an escape.
Also new to Crawford Homes this year is the extended lot with wide side yards. These 80 foot lots feature 60 foot wide homes, with 10-foot side yards to give you plenty of space for kids to play, grow a garden, extra storage or anything else you need. For those who feel claustrophobic living in the city, this particular design offers that extra layer of space between your home and your neighbours, giving you a rural atmosphere with all the convenience of city living. While the look and feel of your home is important, Crawford Homes hasn’t forgotten another important aspect of each new build: the location. Where you want to live is just as important as

the home you live in, and Crawford Homes has the largest selection of lots in Regina. Many of their best lots are found in Regina’s newest developments, including Harbour Landing, The Greens on Gardiner, Lakewood, Edgewater and Fairways West. These locations are some of Regina’s newest neighbourhoods; they’re also beautifully landscaped with plenty of green space, parks and community needs. Crawford Homes also builds in surrounding areas such as Bower Estates, Sundale, Lumsden, Pilot Butte, Balgonie, Rock Point and Spruce Creek. Of course, Crawford Homes’ sales team will work with clients to ensure that no matter where you want to build, they can find the best lot available for your new home. New builds generally take between four to five months to complete, and the crews at Crawford Homes do their best to complete every project in a timely manner. They understand the stress that can come from waiting for possession or from trying to sell an old home before the new build is complete. Building a house depends on several factors, but rain or shine, the crews at Crawford Homes work hard to ensure that no matter what, their customers get the keys to their new home on time. Carrying an old mortgage after just completing a new build can be a heavy financial burden, and Crawford Homes has developed a program to ensure their customers don’t have to face such difficult circumstances. With their “Sell Your Home Guarantee”, Crawford Homes guarantees you’ll sell your old home by the time your new build is completed, or they’ll buy it from you for a pre-determined price. This program is a huge financial security net for all of their customers, and it can also be used in mortgage applications to ensure your bank of your financial stability. This is just another reason Crawford Homes is your number 1 choice.

moving in My husband and I absolutely loved the process of watching the home go from being just dirt in a vacant lot to a real home. We came every day to watch it and there was no downtime. Something new was being done every single day, so we would come back the next day because it was so exciting. We sold our old home very quickly and we were in a predicament. We weren’t supposed to get the keys until June 15th. We were deciding whether we should move in temporarily somewhere, since it was a month and a half before we were supposed to take possession. Luckily, our new building was so far along that Crawford Homes looked at where they were in the process and just finished it. They got people in here constantly and pulled it off. Even the day before, I wasn’t sure it would be done. Only half the flooring was laid out. The next day, as we came in to do the walkthrough, the cleaners were leaving. It was unbelievable.
For those who can’t wait the four or five months for a new build, Crawford Homes is also there to help you find the best of their near-complete builds to meet your tastes, lifestyles and budget. EscapE:
Ideas for your Dream Master Suite By FHR STAFF
T
he “love nest” is where we start and end each day. A luxurious, warm and comfortable bedroom retreat is just the escape you need when you can’t get away.
There are countless ways to transform your master suite into a romantic retreat. Here are a few ideas to get you started: Think of the bed as the showcase of the room. A high quality mattress is an investment that will bring you years of rest and relaxation. Talk with a mattress specialist about determining the best mattress for your needs. Invest in high-quality bed linens to add more comfort. Incorporate high thread count linens with textured knit throws and a luxurious down comforter, and top it off with cushy pillows that reflect the room’s colour scheme. For inspiration, visit a linen retailer or opt to have bedding custom made. A headboard accentuates the bed, and draws the room’s decor together. Investigate unique headboards at a local vintage furniture retailer, design showroom, or even consider having one custom designed by a craftsman. Romance and serenity are created with an appropriate colour palette. For example, cream or ivory walls radiate warmth and lend to an intimate ambiance. By keeping the hues soft and muted, you can add an accent wall to highlight a lounging area within your master suite. Your designer can work with you to determine the most appropriate colours to maximize your space and complement the room’s design elements. Organization is essential: a cluttered bedroom takes all the romance out the space. Make sure your closets have adequate storage systems to keep shoes and clothing in place. Country Lifestyle For Schafer Family North of Pilot Butte at Rock Pointe Estates, Travis and Holly Schafer recently moved into their custom-built home, and they couldn’t be happier with their experience with Emerald Park Homes. They are highly pleased with the whole building process from start to finish, which began in February 2012 and ended with the Schafers’ moving in on November 15th.
Specific Design Ideas Travis and Holly had very specific ideas on how they wanted their home to be finished, and Emerald Park Homes ensured their needs and wants were met. “For example, we knew what we wanted for flooring, and Emerald Park Homes was happy to source our flooring, even if it meant working outside their normal suppliers,” says Travis. “We were also totally impressed with our cabinetry. The Cougar Cabinets we selected look beautiful in our home.”
Our situation was unique because we had purchased the acreage for our home before finding a builder. Many builders don’t want to build on lots they don’t sell, but Emerald Park Homes was happy to accommodate us.
Working Directly With The Builder The Schafers are very happy in their brand-new home, and found working with Emerald Park Homes to be a dream. “The team at Emerald Park Homes were so friendly, willing to meet our expectations, and their trades were great,” adds Travis. “We’d recommend them to our friends and family, no question.”
Emerald Park Homes invites you to take the short drive to White City to see the great selection of fully serviced lots and rural acreages that we have purchased for your new home. Larger lots – lower property tax – family friendly – quiet – safe – walking paths – golf course – spray park – ball and soccer fields.

Spa BathroomS:
EScapE in Your own homE By Jamie Fischer
“I
think people have really busy lives and when they get home they just want to retreat,” says Holli Appelquist, a local interior decorator and business owner. However, where people are retreating to in their homes is shifting from the living room to another unexpected space. Bathrooms were long treated as an afterthought when designing a home; they were something a home needed, but not something people needed to spend time or money on. With the rising popularity of in-home bathroom spas, that’s all changing. “It’s a huge trend,” Appelquist says. Bathroom spas are exactly what they sound like: a fusion of basic bathroom functionality with the luxury and relaxation you’d find at a resort spa.
20

Appelquist has been the design business for over a decade, but the trend of bathroom spas has really been new in the last five years. Spa bathrooms started with the renovation of certain bathroom elements, but they have grown into their own since then. “People started to think about what their vanities looked like,” she says. Now, it’s grown to a point where the entire space is considered. “People want to feel like they’re on vacation in their own home,” she says. To create a bathroom spa, a number of elements can be considered and combined to create different levels of luxury. One of the biggest things to consider is your bathtub. These can range anywhere between $300 for a traditional steel tub to $25,000 for a two-seater jet tub with lights and aromatherapy built right in. No matter what your budget, if you’re looking for a spa bathroom, a comfortable tub is a must.
Showers are also something to consider. The size and shape of modern showers has evolved in recent years, and can include anything from multiple shower heads, to horizontal shower elements, to shower rooms that don’t have any walls at all. Double sinks are nothing new, but when creating a comfortable space in your bathroom, space is the key. Having a separate station for each person using the bathroom to get ready in the morning provides a little extra comfort that goes a long way. The materials of the sinks and vanities themselves are becoming more extravagant as well. While granite and other fine stones were once restricted to the kitchen, they’re becoming more popular in bathroom renovations and in new home builds. Sinks themselves are also now available in more materials than the traditional china. Molten glass, stone, granite, marble and cultured marble are all growing in popularity.
It isn’t just the elements inside the bathroom that contributes to the spalike feeling of modern spa bathrooms. Bob Leier, senior designer at a local homebuilding company, says the floor plan of the entire home is now being shifted to make room for the trendy new bathrooms.
While layout and the right major elements are essential for a spa bathroom, it’s the finishing touches that set the right mood for rest and relaxation. Creative lighting, fixtures, mirrors, décor and aromatherapy candles are examples of finishing touches that contribute to the atmosphere as much as the bigger items.
Because the possibilities for a spa
“There is certainly more space being dedicated to the ensuite,” Leier says. One way designers are creating larger bathrooms is by sacrificing bedrooms; plans that were once meant for at least three rooms have been changed to two, leaving extra room to dedicate to the master bedroom and ensuite.
“We’re finding that there’s as much focus on finish in bathrooms as there is in the rest of the home,” Leier says, adding that bathrooms were previously treated as a function-only space.
about $30,000.
Leier and Appelquist both agree that spa bathrooms aren’t exclusive to any demographic. For those downsizing after retirement, a spa bathroom is a useful way to create luxury in a smaller space. Younger buyers are also coming from upgraded homes, Leier says, and they often have higher standards for their own homes.
including home renovation TV shows
Leier says the layout of master bedrooms has also changed to create spa bathrooms. Where walk-in closets were typically on different walls than the ensuite, they’re now often attached to the bathroom, creating a dressing room.
bathroom are so versatile, Appelquist says spa bathroom renovations can suit a variety of budgets, but those looking to add all the elements of a spa bathroom–a soaker tub, rain shower, large vanity, new décor and more–should plan to spend
For those considering a new spa bathroom, Appelquist says there are a lot of resources available for inspiration, and endless websites. “I encourage everyone to research, and do a lot of thinking about what your priorities are,” she says. “Find out what your wants are versus your needs, and then just go for it.” FHR

“This is country living at its finest, within 15 minutes of downtown,” says Ron, of the 10-acre lots that Mikron is currently developing. These lots include a Mikron custom-built home, city water, dugout and a roadway into the home. “We even help out with some preliminary landscaping,” Ron adds. “We plant over 100 seedling trees on each lot to help the new owners get started beautifying their new yard.” Presently under construction is a 2,349 square foot bungalow with a twist. The home begins with a 1,680 square foot unfinished basement with nine foot ceilings and roughed-in plumbing, plus dry walled exterior walls. Above ground, the home is 1,680 square feet with nine foot ceilings, a large kitchen with walk-in pantry, custom-built cabinetry and stylish
granite countertops. The dining, living and entryway areas feature coffered ceilings. An office or formal dining area is situated off the front entry. The main floor also boasts a three-piece bath, two bedrooms, and immediately off the garage entry, a two-piece bath and a separate laundry area. Attached to the home is a roomy three-car garage, with the spacious master suite above that adds an additional 669 square feet. The suite features a coffered ceiling in the master area, his-and-herswalk-in closets, a four-piece bathroom with corner tub, separate shower and his-and-her sinks. This custom home also features a programmable smart lighting system in the kitchen and living room area that can be upgraded to all parts of the home, and a security system that can be controlled from your smartphone.
The exterior of this Mikron custom-built home is a stone and acrylic finish complemented by a large paving stone driveway and walk, along with matching pillars at the roadway entrance. The home, on its 10-acre parcel, has a beautiful view of the downtown skyline, and is situated eight minutes from major shopping areas and 10 minutes from the University of Regina. SASKATCHEWAN’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH
TYNDALL STONE
100th Anniversary for Saskatchewan’s Legislative Building, 450 millionth anniversary for the building’s stone BY JENNIFER CUGNET
T
his October a provincial landmark and architectural marvel, the Saskatchewan Legislative Building celebrated its 100th anniversary. Completed in 1912, and now affectionately dubbed The ‘Leg’ (pronounced as ‘ledge’), the building has been a timeless symbol of Saskatchewan for a century. The building is clad entirely in limestone called Tyndall stone. Tyndall stone looks like a cream beige to light tan coloured rock. Occasionally it will exhibit golden tan or blue grey hues. Its neutral colouring makes it appealing as a building product– it goes with anything. Its strength and durability are also pleasing characteristics to builders. But it is Tyndall stone’s remarkable beauty – stately yet sparkling, formidable yet delicate – that makes it stand out. Besides Saskatchewan’s Legislative Building, some of the most prestigious buildings in Saskatchewan and across Canada have Tyndall stone exteriors such as the Geological Sciences Building at the University of Saskatchewan, the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C., and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec . Municipal buildings, financial institutions, medical facilities, and churches commonly showcase Tyndall stone-clad exteriors. The stone is also a popular choice for home exteriors and accents such as columns, steps, and fireplaces. Tyndall stone was first observed along the banks of the Red River in the early 1800’s, and it was first used as a building material as far back as 1823 for construction of a warehouse at Lower Fort Garry in Manitoba. The stone gets its name from the town of Tyndall, Manitoba, the place where the stone was initially shipped from in the early 1900’s. One can imagine the effort it took to quarry, package, and transport the Tyndall stone by train from Tyndall to the Legislative Building construction site in Regina all those years ago, RIGHT The Legislattive Building
with some individual blocks weighing as much as eight tons. The ceremonial laying of the first cornerstone at the Legislative Building occurred on October 4, 1909 by the Governor General of Canada, His Excellency Earl Grey. Saskatchewan’s first Premier, T. Walter Scott, stated, “Let us think, as we lay stone on stone that a time is to come when these stones will be sacred because our hands have touched them...”. The Legislative Building preserves Saskatchewan’s history, and the Tyndall stone exterior preserves a portion of the Earth’s history.

Tyndall stone is immediately distinguishable from other rocks by its mottled appearance. Darker tan coloured branching structures can be seen amongst the light cream matrix. This mottling is not only visually pleasing, it is also scientifically significant. The branchy mottles are a type of fossil that, in conjunction with other fossils abundantly found in Tyndall stone, show evidence of life on Earth from over 400 million years ago. Tyndall stone is a limestone rock that formed during the Ordovician period in Earth’s history approximately 450 million years ago. Marine seas extended across Western Canada, covering large portions of Saskatchewan and Manitoba with sea water. The marine waters were home to many organisms, including a variety of corals, gastropods (snails), and cephalopods (squidlike creatures).
Different types of coral are easy to spot in the limestone as they exhibit honeycomb and chain patterns (Tabulate and Halysites corals), and they can resemble horns and sunflowers (Rugose and Receptaculites corals). These organisms and corals have been preserved as fossils within Tyndall stone. The next time you encounter Tyndall stone, take a close look and you’re bound to find some or all of these fossils in the rock. The darker coloured branch-like structures in Tyndall stone are another type of fossil called ichnofossils (ickno-fossils) or trace fossils. Ichnologists (geologists who study trace fossils) theorize that the branching pattern represents tunnels and burrows. These borrows would have been made by tiny organisms living within the

“It’s lIke havIng a Bentley In your kItchen” A “staggeringly powerful” cooker plays a star role in Gordon Ramsay’s new £500,000 (approx $795,000 CDN) kitchen. Val Wotton finds out more Photos ANDREW TWORT
R
unning seven restaurants and spearheading two new TV series, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen, Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay is a busy man. But he still enjoys cooking for family and friends, especially now that he has added a stunning, light-filled kitchen to his south London home.
The kitchen had to be able to take a pounding and be aesthetically stunning without being too sterile and intimidating for a home environment. And it had to fit round the central stove–I can’t stand cooking with my back to everyone else because the cooker’s against a wall; it’s so anti-social. Richard kept me on line.”
Who designed your kitchen?
What difference did having a designer make?
“We had an extension built on the back of the house to take it, but the actual kitchen was designed by Richard Baker, who has a studio–Richard Baker Furniture–near Wimbledon. I went to school with his wife Rachel. He was a dream to work with; he really listens to the client. We had to strike a balance between what works for me professionally, and what works on the domestic front with four small children.
“I had thought of stainless steel worktops, but he said they might seem too clinical at home and suggested the honed granite, which looks amazing. He suggested all the glass to let in light, and we maximized storage space to avoid clutter. I showed him how I work so, for example, the worktops are much deeper than standard to take my large chopping boards.”
What is the cooker? “It’s a French commercial stove, tailormade by Rorgue exactly as I wanted it. It’s a monster, about three metres long, absolutely to die for. It’s like having a Bentley in your kitchen: three-and-ahalf tons of stainless steel that had to be craned over the house to get here. I’ve skimped on nothing–it cost £67,000 (approx. $106,000 CDN)– and I feel more comfortable cooking at home now than I’ve ever done. It’s a real centrepiece, as much a piece of furniture as a stove; people can stand around it with a glass of wine or join in the cooking. And it’s staggeringly powerful. I love the power, it’s amazing. Pans boil so fast, and you can get a decent colour on steaks or grills. I came in from Claridge’s on Christmas Day, and in 45 minutes, I’d cooked dinner for 27 people,

and nobody was waiting for things, because it’s all there, everything’s at hand. And the fact that I use a £4.50 (approx. $7.20 CDN) blowtorch to light the stove makes it even better.”
Where do you eat? “The dining room opens onto the kitchen. We try to eat as a family on Saturdays, and also to have a classic Sunday lunch, where no one’s allowed to leave the table until we’ve all finished eating. But quick and easy food, like breakfast, we might eat at the coffee bar. From Friday to Monday, the kitchen is a family place, but from Monday to Friday, work takes precedence–I sometimes have filming or photography here–and my wife Tana uses the smaller kitchen in the basement to cook for the kids. In the summer, we can open the doors into the garden and eat out there, but we don’t have to bother setting up a barbecue, with the chargrill on the stove.”
A coffee machine is inset above the breakfast bar, which appears solid but has pop-out doors and houses glass and china.

“The one thing I really wanted was an ice-making machine. To me, it’s as important as a dishwasher (of which we have two because I hate washing up). With those stupid little compartments in a fridge, everyone’s always howling for ice, especially in the summer. I have two large fridges standing together so they open out like a larder, and a small freezer, all by Miele and all hidden by doors, so nothing sticks out as an eyesore.”
Would you change anything? “Not a thing. Hell, definitely not. I wanted a perfect kitchen, and though I might not be easy to work for, that’s what I’ve got. It’s a dream, I love it.” FHR
GORDON’S PLANNING TIPS • Two separate sinks are more convenient than the usual one bowl sink and avoid any cross-contamination that might arise from washing meat, fish and veg in the same sink.
• Round off corners and edges for safety and to help prevent chipping. • Set a cooker or hob into an island or peninsular unit so you don’t cook with your back to your guests.
• Finish off with a football goal in the garden so after lunch you can go outside and bend it like Beckham.

askatchewan is experiencing an exciting boom. The province is growing, and there are more jobs, people and opportunities. With the growth from our province`s economic upturn, people in Saskatchewan have the perfect opportunity to invest in their homes with upgrades and renovations. all made to order by their own master craftsmen. The furniture comes directly from their own factory, and it can be custom-ordered to suit your needs, tastes and style. The economic upturn has led to a flurry of new builds in Saskatchewan, resulting in a rush of renovations across the province. Greg Huber, a secondgeneration family member and kitchen designer at the family-owned business, says that over the last few years, Fanny’s has noticed that their customers are looking for more.
“So many of our furniture customers came back to us and asked: ‘where can I get cabinets that are built as well as your furniture?’” Greg says. When he didn’t have an answer, the Huber family decided to fill that gap in the Regina market, and offer Kekuli Bay Cabinets: a new line of custom-made, quality home cabinets, available exclusively at Fanny’s Furniture and Kitchens. Kitchens are the heart of every home, and they need to maximize space to create as much function as possible. Like all of Fanny’s furniture, Kekuli Bay Cabinets are personally hand-crafted
in the Huber workshop, and can be custom-ordered to meet any of your kitchen’s unique needs. By choosing hand-crafted cabinets, you ensure that you’re kitchen’s space is optimized for the best function, without sacrificing the style and look you desire. Fanny’s controls every step of each purchase from design to delivery. Not only does this mean they can walk their customers through the entire process, it also means that they can offer exceptional value on their products. One would think that custom handmade cabinets would be expensive, but

What’s NeW aNd Next for 2013? By Meredith heron

can practically feel your eyes rolling and hear your groans as I write this—another designer telling you what’s trending for the coming year. You’d think we get a commission for our efforts to sell you on the newest, the greatest or “you’ve got to have it,” for fear of looking passé or out of touch with your home décor. More interesting than the latest trends are the methods by which they are conveyed and shared; welcome to the underbelly of the design world and straight-up decor delight. Do you Pin? Pinterest.com is a photo-sharing site that allows people to “pin” a picture from just about anywhere, and then have their followers “re-pin” to their own categorized boards. There are many categories set out by Pinterest that help you to search items, genres or concepts. For example, I’m currently designing a cupcake shoppe here in Toronto, and I was looking for ideas involving wooden spoons as art. I decided to broaden my search to “spoon art,” and found a seemingly endless array of it. Who knew plastic spoons could be turned into ombre wreaths? Pinterest offers a joyful variety of inspiration from fashion, to recipes, design, décor, landscaping and more. I often suggest that clients join the site, and pin inspirational ideas for their projects there; I follow them so that I can see their boards. They even allow you to make comments, such as “Over my dead body, we are so not doing that in your dining room!” To follow my boards, just put Meredith Heron into the search and hit Follow All. If you are considering a design or renovation project, another great site is Houzz.com, which just keeps growing in leaps and bounds. Designers like me have professional accounts and upload our projects for people to see, share and add to their inspiration boards. Again, you can share your boards and collect design ideas; you can even ask the designers specific questions, but I will caution you on this one: I get

hundreds of questions from people who are looking to copy or do-it-yourself an idea or space of mine, but designers don’t look kindly at questions that enable our work to be copied, and this includes our suppliers. Use the site for inspiration, and to shop for a designer you’d like to work with, but please keep in mind that the work you are looking at was paid for by someone else. Our clients wouldn’t like us giving the milk away for free, if you catch my drift. Decorpad.com is another site I go to for inspiration. Again, you can put specific search words in and look for articles and/or photographs. This site works better with general search words, such as living rooms, headboards and master bedroom. I sometimes narrow this down with qualifiers such as modern bedroom or grey living room.

be tricky if you are devoted to these sites. I’m amazed at how quickly I tire of something because it’s been blogged to death. In our office, we routinely roll our eyes and call something “bloggy”, which isn’t a good thing. However, it wouldn’t be a trends article if I didn’t at least give you a few actual design trends for 2013, would it?
These online communities and networks have a huge influence on trends and style, but you have to keep up. Things cycle through in the blink of an eye, so finding something that will be long-lasting can
Ikat is still all the rage as far as patterns go.
Monaco Blue is the pantone colour of the year for 2013. As a devotee of blue, I’m thrilled by this. Every project on our present roster is based on blue, so I’m a happy designer. We’re pairing it with magenta and deep blue purples into violets.
Pattern, pattern, pattern; mixing and matching, layering, maximalist versus
minimalism—we can’t get enough. In a single room, we routinely use at least 10 fabrics and patterns, and more if I can swing it. Brass and gold—yes it’s back. We have several projects about to be published nationally, including a kitchen that is pink and gold, where we used polished brass pot lights throughout. It’s stunning and not dated. Greys. They continue to be strong, but now we are seeing them in woods: hardwood floors and case goods alike. Cerused oak and bleached oaks are back, but greyed—no salmon pink washes this time around. If you want to try out a new trend, or you need help getting started on a new project, we’d love to help you make it a reality in 2013. the high style and drama of drapery. Not your grandmother’s drapes–these drapes are the style that infuses rooms with art, build height as well as depth, and layer on the luscious colours or patterns to make your space truly unique. Dive into drapery, and delight in the decorative transformation of your home.
“What is exciting about drapes?” asks Leanne Fisher, owner and team member of Regina’s Budget Blinds. “Until now, drapes have not been what jumps to mind when we think about style for our homes, and we are the first to admit that drapes have earned a bad reputation in the window covering industry,” she continues. “When people ask us ‘What’s exciting about drapes?’ we have precisely the answer: drama.” Drapery from Budget Blinds means that you will never inhabit a home with the stuffy pinch-pin style drapes of the past, but rather you can choose from the thousands of available colours, patterns and range of textures that will enliven your spaces with dramatic flair. Yes, drapery can do this, and Leanne and her team will show you how. “Vintage looks are really hot these days, and we have seen a real resurgence of the high fashion of the past in current home décor when it comes to employing drapery for dramatic effect,” says Leanne. “What is refreshing is that vintage with a modern twist means that dusty old panels truly are a thing of the past; you can have your vintage look, and the modern convenience of in-home laundering as well, because many of our drapery products are family-friendly and machine washable.” On the other side of the coin, sleek and urban European drapery panels in bold colours and minimalist lines are equally hot for today’s modern buyer. Customers of Budget Blinds benefit from the selection of not only these urban fashion choices of colour and fabric, but also in how the drapery is hung. “The old rod-andhook of traditional sheers is being replaced as more and more customers choose grommets and other non-traditional materials for their suspension option,” says Leanne. “Some of the best calls we get from our clients are when they ask us to help them choose what suits them best. When we present them with an option they’ve never considered before and truly like, we know we’ve done a good job to move their home’s style to the next level.” Looking for drama for your home’s window fashion? Modern metals or vintage glamour? Contact Leanne and the Budget Blinds team at 306.949.2300 for a consultation and the style that suits you, your family and your home best. Some questions to ask when considering a furnace upgrade. • • • • • • • • • • •
What type of furnace do I need? How many BTUs? What efficiency should I have? Is the duct (supply and return) adequate? Should I have more supply air, and what about a basement return air? Does my venting have to be changed for the new furnace? Is the hot water tank venting proper size and gauge? Are there advantages to a continuous low speed fan? Will my old thermostat work with a new furnace? How often should I change or clean the furnace filter? What can I do as a homeowner to keep my furnace running at the highest efficiency possible?
Installing a New Furnace Condensation issues can arise when upgrading to a high-efficiency furnace. Changing one item can cause issues elsewhere if your home’s ventilation is not adjusted, resulting in excess moisture and condensation problems as seen on your windows. Always think of your house as a system, keeping in mind that one reason you’re seeing these changes in your home after your upgrades is your new high-efficient
heating system operates differently than your old furnace. For example, your old furnace would draw air from inside the home for combustion, but the new highefficient units have their own supply line that go into the combustion chamber, and are exhausted outside through their own plastic vent pipe. Exhaust ventilation has to be provided to accommodate increased relative humidity in the home; otherwise high humidity may be the outcome.
Choose the Right Size of Air Conditioner, Furnace, Heat Pump or Boiler to Fit Your Home In addition to the savings on your gas bill, you may be eligible for a rebate through the Saskatchewan EnerGuide for Houses Program. When considering adding or replacing air conditioning or heating to your home, insist that the installing contractor “sizes” the system properly. A qualified contractor will not recommend equipment size based solely on the size of your home, or assume that your existing equipment was sized properly in the first place. Be sure to also tell your contractor if you plan to renovate in the near future. Changing windows, upgrading insulation levels, finishing the basement, air-sealing or a new addition will impact the sizing calculation for any new system.
To complete the design load calculation, the contractor will need to take measurements during the initial visit to your home and ask some questions. They also take into account: • Local climate conditions • Size and number of windows that let in heat from the sun • Existing insulation levels of the home • Number and lifestyle of your home’s occupants • Predicted or known air exchange rate of home There is only one correct size of equipment for your home. Not only will a unit that is too big turn on and off more often, which is annoying, but over-sizing equipment can result in increased fuel consumption and higher operating costs. This is inefficient and can contribute to premature part failure, higher noise levels and reduced comfort due to hot or cold spots within the home. You need just the right size; under-sizing of equipment will also cause severe comfort problems. Ideally, the equipment should be designed within plus or minus 10 per cent of the required size. FHR

customize your home. Having sizes that reach all the way up to 24 inches by 24 inches by 36 inches and also 36 inches by 36 inches, large-format tiles give you ample opportunity to discover new flooring choices in all areas within your home. With tiles being modular, it allows you to be creative in assembling your floor. You can place large-format tiles together for an expansive look, use them as inserts for a custom look, and also set them at angles to grow small spaces. It is the perfect style of flooring for areas of your home like bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and entryways where moisture can ruin other types of floors. The wonderful thing about tile is that it holds up against the elements with the larger format tile allowing you greater freedom to explore patterns and to experiment with color pallets.
A successful application that comes with using large format tiles is that the quality of tiles allows them to be set as close as 1/16th inch apart. Having this installation freedom enables you to receive the greatest benefit that large-format tile offers—ease of maintenance—as opposed to the maintenance concerns and distractions that grout and caulk may cause. By using large-format tiles, shower and tub surrounds can have less than one per cent grout in them, as opposed to the five to ten per cent grout that would be commonly found in a similar area using smaller format tile. If you are working in a very small bathroom, you can use the same large tile not only on the floor, but also on the tub deck and walls. This flexibility in use
can greatly reduce the headaches that often arise when trying to work within a reduced space. Large-format tile also can give you that elegant marble-orstone-like appearance in numerous areas of your home at a fraction of the cost it would take to install actual marble or stone. The long term value for your home is increased substantially because large-format tile dramatically reduces the potential for scratching or staining of the floors or walls while retaining the elegance and glamour that the appearance of marble or stone bring to any given space. Our experienced team of flooring consultants at Parkland Carpet One are happy to sit down with you, and go over all the benefits that larger format tiles offer to your home. You
can view samples, and we can assist in demonstrating to you all the varied applications that can be used in those unique areas of your home where you never thought that tiles could possibly be used. You can also compare various sized tiles for similar areas in your home to find the format that best suits your needs. At Parkland Carpet One, we believe that no matter what architectural style your home may be, there’s a tile solution to help bring your living vision into the reality and comfort of your home. Tile has been admired for years, and with the exciting advances in larger format tiles, they will continue to be a great way to bring lasting beauty and value to your home. FHR

omeowners add on to their homes for a variety of reasons, namely because they enjoy their house and its location but need additional room. Extra space might be required because of an expanding family. Others might desire a new office or guest bedroom. Kitchen expansions, front entranceway developments, media rooms, sun porches – the list of potential additions goes on and on. Additions require careful planning and consultation. Utilizing the professional services of engineers, architects, renovators, or even designers can save you time and frustration in the end. These services help prevent costly mistakes and ensure nothing unexpected arises. Whether your addition is small in scale— for example, adding a dormer window— or a large one—such as building a new wing—there are several things to consider. Talk with your contractor

about the size and scope of your desired addition. A professional will ensure the addition meets your needs and works well with the existing house. He or she can also asses how the project affects landscaping alterations.
For example, are there any problems with the existing roof or foundation? Does the roof have proper water drainage and will the addition be up to code? Does a new drainage system have to be installed or will the existing one be sufficient?
Zoning and bylaw regulations must be considered to prevent costly penalties and fines. A building inspector can advise you of the local bylaws and zoning requirements, as well as provincial building codes. Your insurance agent will assess how the addition and the work project will affect your current insurance plan, and whether or not you need extra insurance to protect against any liabilities. Also, consult your mortgage lender about approval of the project: you don’t want a new addition to jeopardize your current mortgage standing.
Your current plumbing and electrical systems may be maximized with the addition. Your contractor will work with you to determine if plumbing should be upgraded and the electrical system expanded in order to meet code. You will also want to consider television and cable services for the addition. Oftentimes, when homeowners expand their space they upgrade with home automation systems. Planning with a home automation expert will help you determine electrical system requirements.
A structural engineer or architect can determine how the new addition will affect the current structure of the house.
Your home’s heating and ventilation needs will increase with the the addition of more space. You might want to use this as an opportunity to upgrade to an energy

EXPERTAdvice Spray Foam Insulation: The Most Superior for Your Attic
W
hen insulating a home, we often get asked how we insulate the roof and attic. Spray foam can be placed on the attic floor, but this leaves the rest of the attic vented and uninsulated. To properly insulate your attic, the foam should be sprayed directly to the underside of the roof, sealing off the attic from any air infiltration and exfiltration, and creating a non-vented assembly.
Spray Jones
Michael Dynna 12 Pleasantview Bay Phone: 306.359.FOAM (3626) mike@sprayjones.com www.sprayjones.com
Despite popular belief, your attic does not need to be ventilated. Ventilated attics undergo severe temperature changes in the winter and summer, especially here in the prairies. In the winter, the cold air creeps into the attic, causing heat to transfer from the living space into the cold attic. Cold winds make this even worse by stripping away the warm air from the attic. During the hot summer months, heat builds up in the attic, increasing moisture and condensation. Spray foam completely seals the attic, making it a “conditioned” space that is as comfortable as the rest of the house. Insulating the roof eliminates energy loss from attic ducts, and excess moisture is not pulled into the attic because the top of the building is tighter. Since the attic temperature is the same as the rest of the house, your furnace does not need to work overtime to replace the heat lost from living spaces in the winter, thus saving on energy costs. In the summer, heat transfer

from sheathing and shingles into the attic is eliminated and your air-conditioning does not work to cool that space. Spray foam keeps moisture outside, decreasing the formation of mold. The tight seal you get from spray foam also means homes are quieter, and you won’t hear that whistling sound in the attic from the wind. Furthermore, spray foam is waterproof and windproof, offering added protection if you lose your shingles, and have not yet replaced them. People also wonder whether foam under the roof deck causes shingles to curl. Remember that an attic with spray foam is not hot during the summer; it stays within two to four degrees of the thermostat setting. If the attic is cool, it means that the shingles are only heated by sunlight. This is the same direct sunlight that is present even with a vented assembly. Most importantly, regardless of area, spray foam needs to be installed by professionals. The way spray foam insulation is installed is instrumental to its effectiveness. At Spray Jones, we value professionalism and experience. Our employees must pass exams, and the people in charge of a spray rig have a minimum of 2,000 hours of spray time. Next issue: What to know before installing spray foam insulation in your attic. FHR

GINGER: AN ANCIENT HEALER By Ken Beattie

inger—yes, as in gingerbread—has a long-standing medicinal as well as horticultural reputation. I mention gingerbread for the simple fact that over the festive season, this edible creation ranks in its own food group at our house. Oddly enough, gingerbread has its origins in ancient ATTIE Greek BY times and not in Asia, as I had thought. KEN BE Apparently, ginger root was peeled and wrapped in a piece of bread, and eaten after a heavy meal to prevent indigestion, hence gingerbread. Perhaps this root’s ability to settle tummies was the reason that ginger ale was often used as a home remedy for rumbling tummies and overeating. Native to India, the ginger plant has been used as a physical cleanser as well as a spiritual purifier and food preservative by the Ayurvedics. In some religious festivals, the ever-sopopular garlic was shunned and replaced with ginger so as to afford a pleasant, sweet aroma on the person before the gods. Ginger has very warming and drying qualities, and is actually a stimulant. Many cough
remedies will contain ginger or ginger parts mostly for its expectorant quality—a great value to enjoy especially at this time of the year. There is some evidence that ginger has a mild anti-depressant quality, yet another positive vote for gingerbread. One of the best known uses for this seeming panacea is to quell nausea and vertigo associated with motion sickness: air, sea or on land. If you are prone to these ailments and have been putting off a cruise or extended air travel, ingesting powdered ginger in a gel capsule works well before travelling. Some folks will dab a little ginger oil behind their ear prior to travel with apparently good success. From a decorative perspective, ginger is a remarkable plant both in form and flower, and is simple to grow. During the lower light periods that we experience in the winter, ginger can be started indoors from a root purchased at the local green grocer or supermarket. Check carefully to determine if any growth is apparent at the tip of the lumpy roots. An organic produce store may be your best bet because most ginger root is irradiated to prevent growth. You will notice that these rhizomes have what appear to be “fingers” or digits protruding from the main bulk of the root. Fear not:; if you should break one or more of these away from the main member, they too will grow into ginger plants. When you are ready to plant the rhizome, lay it flat on the surface of a soiless medium, like ProMix™, press firmly to ensure that the root is about 50 per cent into the mix, much like an Iris rhizome would be planted, and then water. Next, you might tent the entire container with a clear, plastic bag. This quasi-greenhouse will keep the humidity and temperature at a decent rate while the ginger sets its roots. Under cover, the container is not likely to need water for some time, unless you notice that the mix is dry. You should see green shoots at the very ends of the ginger rhizome appearing cylindrical and almost grass-like. At this point, it is wise to either remove the plastic tent, or vent it to allow fresh air to circulate. From this point on, your new ginger plant will surprise you with a rapid rate of growth. During the winter months, ginger, like many other houseplants, will amble along with no spectacular production of leaves, and not likely any flowers until conditions improve. Ginger started from
scratch may indeed not bloom until the following year, even under excellent conditions. All the same, this is a very easy and remarkable plant to grow. When crushed, the leaves give off a strong ginger scent; for this reason alone, the plant is worth growing. Flowers are typically borne on a spike and are heavily scented, and the individual flowers of the edible ginger are white or perhaps a pale pink. There are many cultivated varieties that come in other colours and a myriad of very interesting floral forms.
Gingers make a bold statement in the summer garden: tall and stately resembling corn in some cases, and well worth the minimal effort. Children will likely find this a cool situation as well, and may consider growing ginger as a school project. Water is the best food for ginger, however, it does respond rather rapidly to a healthy nitrogen fix. Enjoy the winter season, and start early for next year’s garden. FHR

Warm Up YoUr Winter:
the ever-Charming FireplaCe By FHR STaFF

fireplace has irresistible charm: the warmth and beauty of the flames commands relaxation and coziness to a room. The winter season becomes more enjoyable when gathering around a crackling fire. Not only do fireplaces add much appreciated warmth to a home, but there is an additional aesthetic charm. You can choose from a vast array of styles, once you consider different finishing options, such as trims, panels, doors and even mantles. The mantle and the surrounding décor really set the tone, regardless of the type of fireplace. These elements can be interchanged if and when the time comes to renovate or update your home’s style.
What is the interior (and even exterior) look of your home? If you have a more classic style, you might incorporate a

brick or stone surround into your space rather than an ultramodern fireplace with brushed steel. If your home is country-cozy, a good match would be a stove. For the ultramodern home, a fireplace with marble, limestone or granite provides a great centerpiece or focus for the design scheme. If you’ve recently added on to your home, a fireplace helps to heat the extra space. For example, a dining room expansion or upgrade can be made complete by installing a fireplace. Imagine the guests at your next dinner party enjoying a glass of wine and mingling in front of the warm flames. Your fireplace choice should be as unique as you and your home. The traditional wood-burning fireplace provides efficient heating, is durable and offers a much-
appreciated level of coziness. Because the surrounds and doors can be customized for a particular look, they suit many different styles of décor. For safety reasons, wood-burning fireplaces with masonry chimneys require regular maintenance. This type of fireplace is useful for heating localized areas (some even have a heat distribution system) and is cost-effective to operate. Inefficient wood fireplaces can be updated by installing a wood insert; these inserts are not only good for retrofits, but for new fireplace additions as well. Wood-burning stoves complement a traditional or rustic décor, and serve homeowners well with efficient heating. They require a chimney or natural venting system.
owners of winterized properties enjoy the user-friendliness and cost-effectiveness of these units. Whether you are renovating or building new, the fireplace adds a unique element to your space. A source of warmth and ambience, fireplaces are more versatile than ever, and can be installed in any home. FHR
Gas fireplaces or stoves give the look of a natural wood fire without the mess: no ashes or wood chips to tend to. The heat emitted from gas is immediate, and the flame height and temperature can be controlled by a thermostat, making it very user-friendly. These versatile units lend nicely to the atmosphere of any home. Using propane or natural gas, gas fireplaces with direct venting systems are ideal for new installations. If you are updating your existing fireplace, and there is a chimney and flue present, a gas insert is a good retrofit. Like other types of stoves, a gas stove provides a traditional element to a room. They are ventless, smokeless, and fireless, making them versatile and usable almost anywhere. Electric fireplaces are portable and energyefficient, easily heating a room approximately 400 square feet. Electric inserts are an easy solution for upgrading older, inefficient fireplaces. Not only are they convenient, but these units enhance a room’s look through different styles that range from modern to traditional. Some models are designed to
hang on the wall, providing homeowners and guests a unique conversation starter. A pellet stove or insert produces minimal smoke, and creates less ash and creosote than regular wood fireplaces. The pellets are made from a variety of compressed recycled materials; the compression leaves very little moisture in the pellets and allows them to burn hotter than wood. As freestanding units, pellet stoves require venting, whereas pellet inserts can be installed in existing fireplaces with chimneys. Both require electricity to operate. If you want a real fire but don’t want the hassle of wood, you may want to consider a gel fireplace. These units burn an odourless and non-toxic jelled alcohol compound in a can. While you can’t control the size of flame, this is remedied by burning more than one can. This eco-friendly option is great for localized heating, and provides the same ambience one expects from a wood or gas fireplace. These units can be installed almost anywhere because they do not require special venting. For example, cottage
The type of fireplace you choose is directly linked to the venting system: Direct venting system. Uses a coaxial pipe system where outside air is drawn in for combustion, and a second pipe vents the air back outside. Because this system can be vented either horizontally or vertically, it is suitable for homes with no existing chimney. Natural venting system. Uses air from the room for combustion, then vents like a furnace at the roof. It is an economical system to install, but less efficient than direct venting. Ventless. Does not require a chimney or flue, making them versatile and usable for almost any room. Want to heat up the master suite? Warm up the kitchen? This type of fireplace is the perfect option.
