Procrastinate Now!
In-house Design Lori Gallagher l lori@finelifestyles.ca
That is such a concise and insightful joke, I wish I had written it. Alas, I stole it from Ellen Degeneres, who is a very funny comedian, if not a great dancer. Like Ellen, I am a bit of a procrastinator. It’s a wonder my wife doesn’t complain about it (much) because she is the kind of person who will decide it’s time to pick up the living room and wind up cleaning the entire house. I’m the kind of person who will decide it’s time to do the dishes and wind up writing a column about procrastination. I suppose we complement each other. At first glance, a defence of procrastinating may not be the type of thing you’d expect to see at the beginning of a magazine about homes. After all, our advertisers are hoping to inspire you to get off your butt and finally tackle that home improvement project you’ve been putting off. And we, of course, want our advertisers to be successful so they can continue to be our advertisers. You may have already inferred that “procrastinate now” is my way of saying, “stop and read this magazine,” with obvious reference to the old adage “stop and smell the roses.” The origin of that phrase is obscured by the vagaries of time. One story suggests it dates to a conversation between two American friends in the late 19th century, one of whom worked so diligently on her rose garden that she did not take time to enjoy her work until the other gently reminded her to experience the beauty she had created. Another popular attribution is that it is misquoted from the famous golfer Walter Hagen’s 1956 book The Walter Hagen Story in which he writes: “You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry. Don’t worry. And be sure to stop and smell the flowers along the way.” Some people credit Ringo Starr’s 1981 album and the title track written by Harry Nilsson, but I’m pretty sure I had heard the expression long before the 1980s. Regardless of the origin, it remains very good advice. Let’s face it, there is always something we could or “should” be doing instead of smelling roses, golfing, listening to former Beatles’ records or reading magazines, so if you don’t do it now, when are you going to get around to procrastinating? 4

Heather Fritz
Meredith Heron’s love of design came early and was nurtured in childhood while rearranging furniture and conducting house tours for her schoolmates in her family’s home. Although Meredith tried a more traditional route, becoming an elementary school teacher, her passion, enthusiasm and infectious love of design took over. Shortly after striking out on her own, Meredith made her mark by beginning Red Heron Essentials—now Meredith Heron Design Inc. with offices in the prestigious Designer’s Walk in downtown Toronto. She is a regular host/designer on several HGTV shows and her work has been featured on W Network. Driven, dynamic, and passionate, with moxie and style that is inherently Meredith, she blends, creates, discovers, and designs that which can only be best described as personally yours.
Internationally merited, nationally published, wedding and lifestyle photographer Heather Fritz has been shooting across Canada for the past decade. Heather grew up in Alberta and has lived in Yukon, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario and is thrilled to now be home-based in Saskatoon. “I decided that I would like Saskatoon because we chose to move here, but I was completely unprepared for how much I love it!” she says.
Carol Todd Carol Todd began her professional career in 1978 at CKRM radio, as Carol Boese. FROM TALKING REFRIGERATORS TO REMOTE CONTROL POPCORN MAKERS, THE FUTURE IS NOW FOR HOME AUTOMATION The 1950s was a period of prosperity and optimism in North America. Not for everyone, of course, and not everywhere. But the prairie dust bowl was fertile again and the Great Depression a fading memory. The war was over, and in the United States, the failed promise of Herbert Hoover’s 1928 campaign slogan, “a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage,”
finally seemed within reach for Americans and Canadians alike. Saskatchewan enjoyed a building and economic boom unparalleled until the present day.

ONWARD, SLOWLY BUT SURELY
FROM BILL’S HOUSE TO YOURS
Cars still don’t drive themselves, exactly, but several models on the market today do offer hands-free parallel parking. Most kitchen tasks are still largely a manual affair, but we have seen the large-scale adoption of many time-saving conveniences including dishwashers, microwave ovens, bread makers and refrigerators that will tell you when the milk has gone bad or when you are getting low on eggs. And the latest and greatest home entertainment centres include features such as the ability to start the popcorn maker without getting up from your movie-watching.
Okay, so the microchip thing may still be a little too Minority Report for the average homeowner, but these days, you don’t have to be a multi-billionaire technophile to live like one. After all, it was 1995 when Bill and Melinda completed “Xanadu 2.0,” ancient history, technologically-speaking. Heck, Facebook was still making a date to meet up at a coffee shop or bar and cell phones were, well, phones.
Mid-20th century prognosticators may have been several decades off with their predictions, but there have been many innovations along the way. Remember The Clapper, that cheesy 1980s, sound-activated light switch? And who can forget those mechanical light timers we sometimes used to fool burglars—only the stupidest ones—that we were at home and not thousands of kilometres away sipping Pina Colodas in The Bahamas? Remote-control security, programmable sprinkler systems and numerous other gadgets round out the list of standalone home automation (HA) products. All of that is still a far cry from true, fullyintegrated HA, though. When Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda were building their $113 million mansion overlooking Lake Washington in Medina, a suburb of Seattle, they included miles of Ethernet and fibre optic cable to facilitate centralized and automated control over every aspect of their environment. At chez Gates, residents and guests wear microchips that relay customized environmental preferences—lighting intensity, ambient temperature, entertainment centre volume, floor heating etc.—to the server network (Windows NT, of course) that controls the 66,000 square-foot cottage. The system will even automatically put up your favourite artwork on the multitude of flat screens embedded in the walls as you stroll into a room.

When Tammy and Rene Simair built their Regina home in 2008, they decided to go the whole nine yards. Their system wakes up with them in the morning by heating the floors and raising the air temperature as it detects people starting to move around. It lowers the temperature again and turns off all the lights when the security system is armed as the family leaves for work and school. It automatically lowers the volume of the entertainment system when guests approach the front door and mutes it altogether when the telephone rings. It
even sends Tammy a text message on her BlackBerry when the kids arrive home from school. And they can control everything from the sprinkler system to the security cameras via the Internet if they are away. “Having the house automated and using the system has turned out better than I imagined,” Tammy said. “When everything is done for you, you feel taken care of, almost pampered. You can just live your life and not worry.” Of course, the Simairs had their system installed during building, but you don’t even have to build new anymore. Today’s solutions can be retrofitted to existing homes with out-of-the-box, wireless, affordable and even do-it-yourself systems without gutting the place. ALMOST READY FOR PRIME TIME? Despite the promises of the 1950s—and the perhaps surprising fact that integrated HA systems have actually been on the mar-
ket for more than three decades—they are still not even close to being a standard feature of most homes. There have been several players in the Saskatchewan HA arena for years, but a sure sign the technology may be almost ready for prime time is when the traditionally risk-averse telephone company starts to get involved. In 2009, Sasktel, through its subsidiary SecurTek in partnership with Home Automated Living (HAL), launched its entry into the market with its Home Manager product. The provincial communications giant is banking on the fact that most people in Saskatchewan are already customers and offer the home manager along with monitored security bundled with its home phone, Internet, television and cellular services. It is that existing infrastructure which makes HA a natural for Sasktel and a boon for HAL. “Home Automated Living is proud to be a SecurTek partner,” said Tim Shriver, HAL president. “As an innovative company with extensive knowledge and experience in the monitoring industry, SecurTek is uniquely qualified to launch a home automation system like the one we’ve developed.”
it already enjoyed widespread adoption? Scholars use a number of models to predict the success of technologies. Most use some sort of matrix or rubric to plot easeof-use against perceived usefulness, affordability and reliability. “Home automation products need to be invisible to be successful,” wrote Daniel Amor in his book Internet Future Stategies: How Pervasive Computing Services Will Change the World. “Their functionality needs to be easily accessible without being vulnerable to configuration mishaps or software bugs.” The proliferation of smartphones may well be the critical mass the home automation industry has been waiting for. A majority of people now have a potential HA controller at their fingertips wherever they go and are comfortable using it for everything from texting with friends to uploading work presentations to their boss. Add the fact that to support the new generation of “phones,” wireless networks have become fast, reliable and almost ubiquitous, the era of home automation may well finally be upon us. For Tammy Simair, it already is. “It’s complete peace of mind, and I would miss it if I didn’t have it,” she said.
THE FUTURE IS NOW So, given the maturity of HA, why hasn’t

In this area, they have been undoubtedly successful. Becoming Saskatchewan’s #1 homebuilder with a staff of trades, salespeople, and forward-thinking leadership, North Ridge has cemented their position at the top of the heap. What sets North Ridge apart is their dedication to pursuing excellence in
their product, in their organization, and in the home owning experience. With a sales team made up of professionals, and award winners they are doing just that. For clients, purchasing a home through a salesperson who works for the company that built it has numerous advantages. Spending her time in sales in both Saskatoon and Edmonton, Durant brings her own signature wit and verve to the Saskatoon home market, and is a 2011 Bridges Community Builder Award winner.

An excited member of North Ridge’s team Steve brings experience selling multi-family units and condos and an eye for creative detail. Local builder remains customers’ choice for custom-built and ready-to-move homes BY TAMMY ROBERT Warman Homes has been building quality homes for over twenty-five years in the Saskatoon bedroom communities of Warman, Martensville and Langham, using the finest materials and embodying the most modern in design, inspiration and technology. Guided by the principles of quality, service and integrity, Warman Homes’ staff and tradespeople are dedicated to excellence, building a finely crafted home for each and every customer—a fact made abundantly apparent given the many awards the home construction company has won over the years. In 2010, Warman Homes was the proud recipient of the Saskatoon and Region Home Builders’ Association’s Customer Satisfaction Award—marking the second

consecutive year the company has won the prestigious award. “It was the only award we applied for, and we were up against all the major players in the industry,” says Warman Homes’ General Manager Keith Heinrichs. “No small feat considering we were the only builder entered that not only builds custom homes on-site, but also builds ready-to-move (RTM) homes that are relocated all over Saskatchewan.” “Warman Homes is truly humbled and honoured to have received this recognition from our customers,” continues Warman Homes’ Sales Manager Ken Wagar. “Winning an award like this only reinforces a customer’s choice of us as their builder, enhances our reputation as a trusted builder and helps to ensure future success
of our company.” From exquisitely custom-designed homes, to those built to mirror Warman Homes’ own standard plans, or a home selected from their inventory of magnificent RTM homes, Warman Homes is ready to be your builder of choice. “When a customer chooses to buy a Warman Home, they are showing a tremendous amount of faith and confidence in us for what will be one of the biggest financial decisions in their lifetime,” says Wagar. “They come to us because of our well earned reputation for excellence in home building quality and service, fair and competitive pricing, and because they know we will turn their home over to them on time.”
not only homes, but trusting relationships with our customers, and this is evident by the number of repeat customers and referrals we receive.”
The Warman Homes’ philosophy blends an emphasis on a positive attitude from the point of first contact with the client alongside respect, cooperation, organization, hard work and communication to accomplish the goals and expectations of both the client, and the company. “If there are issues, they are addressed head-on in a timely manner,” says Heinrichs. “As a company we have high expectations and standards, and that never changes. Warman Homes builds
“General manager Keith Heinrichs oversees our home building team,” explains Wagar. “Keith has many years of experience with the company, and demands quality, fairness and respect for customers and staff alike. Keith is well-known and highly respected in the industry.” Integral to Warman Homes’ success is their unique approach to handling clients: the entire sales team is noncommissioned. This results in a team that is both willing and able to help any and every client at all stages of their new home collaboration. The company’s fusion of knowledge, balance and experience means Warman Homes’ clients know they’re joining forces with industry veterans who will
turn over a home of unparalleled quality and artisanship. Warman Homes’ creative epicenter is their large showroom embodying a warm, casual atmosphere where clients can browse and select products for their home in comfort and style. “Our showroom is designed to leave clients feeling energized, captivated, and excited about their new home purchase,” says Heinrichs. “It also saves the client a lot of time and the unnecessary stress of visiting numerous suppliers.” Warman Homes offer an unlimited selection of magnificent upgrades and custom options, turning your dream home into a palatial playground with polished, exotic hardwood floors, Jacuzzi tubs, a covered front verandah or an upscale and elegant chef’s kitchen. If living on a golf course has always been your dream, Warman Homes has homes and lots for sale in The Legends,

a charming and contemporary subdivision of the Town of Warman. Moments from the city, resplendent with sweeping green spaces and walking paths surrounding a spectacular new 18hole championship golf course, you are within walking distance to all schools, the new sport and cultural village, and of course, the new golf course and fine dining in the clubhouse restaurant. If you’re looking to establish yourself and your family even deeper into the quant prairie countryside while remaining close enough to take advantage of urban luxuries, Warman Homes also has both homes and lots available for sale in Langham. Warman Homes is the premium ready-to-move home designer and builder in Western Canada. “A RTM home from Warman Homes is not the stereotypical square box that may immediately come to mind,” explains Wagar. “RTM homes can be built with nine foot or higher ceilings, vaulted ceilings, fireplaces, granite countertops or virtually any other gorgeous, luxury feature you would find in a custom, on-site constructed home.” Constructed to rigid standards, Warman Homes is one of the few RTM builders who are confident enough in their floor systems to install hardwood, tile, laminate and cork flooring in their homes before the home is moved. And move they have—Warman Homes’ RTM top-quality homes have been moved to locations throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and even the northern United States. Whatever style or cost of home you may be looking for, Warman Homes will build it with the same expertise and attention to detail that every client is entitled too. Thanks to their longevity and reputation for quality, they are connected with a wide variety of suppliers that provide them with an infinite selection of well-crafted materials and breathtaking products for your new home. Current news, plenty of details and more information on available lots, on-site constructed or ready-to-move homes is always up-to-date and accessible for viewing on the Warman Homes website, www.warmanhomes.ca.

Superior function and aesthetics find harmony in custom designed kitchens BY LISSA ROBINSON The kitchen is one of the most visible and well-used spaces in your house, and establishing the character, style and identity of any home begins here. It is a gathering space to nurture family and friends with more than just food, but with comfortable and functional surroundings. As a living space and a working space, kitchens can afford to be both beautiful and functional. The design team at Superior Cabinets is intimately aware of this fact and pays careful attention to the kind of environment a homeowner wants to create and presents innovative ways to reflect your unique needs and desires. The design expertise of their team ensures harmony throughout the home. From kitchen to great room, bathroom, laundry and home office, proper planning is fundamental to a successful design. “While it’s important to have a beautiful kitchen,” says designer Crystal Weisbrod,“it is equally important to have a functional space that will suit

your storage needs and keep up with the challenges of your family’s activities. A professional kitchen designer can develop your personal style while keeping a focus on the necessities of a well-planned functional kitchen.” Weisbrod has been with Superior for more than four years. She received her Diploma of Interior Design (with Honours) from the Career Campus in Saskatoon, and enjoys the status of being the company’s very first practicum student. Superior has participated in student placements in coordination with various design colleges. “Our goal is to keep our company open to fresh ideas and to contribute to the professional development of new designers,” says general manager, James Neufeld. Superior Cabinets has three decades of design expertise in building attractive and functional spaces. Established in Saskatoon as a small cabinet-making shop in the early 1980s, Superior has grown to a company of more than 200 employees
in four locations across two provinces. They have also won numerous awards for their products including a Bridges Award for 2010 from the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association. In addition to their existing show rooms in Saskatoon, Calgary and Edmonton, Superior Cabinets recently opened a showroom in Fort McMurray, and is opening a second location in Calgary in June of 2011. “Our quality,” says Neufeld, “is defined by our customers. Our customers expect a beautiful product that is backed up by our lifetime warranty. They expect to buy an experience that exceeds all of their expectations.” What Neufeld is expressing is the importance of selling not just a quality product but a service that ensures the absolute in customer experience. This requires a number of key components in the design process that include the company’s focus on innovation, lifestyle and functionality, the expertise of a professional designer who guides the customer through the planning and design process, a manufacturing

customer service metrics, and like they say, “What gets measured, gets managed.”
“Superior Cabinets,” Neufeld says, “has made substantial investments in the past several years which have helped us improve our clients’ experience with our company. We have improved visibility on each order that is placed, from the moment the client is first given a quote, until the last adjustment is made after installation. We’re now able to give our clients up-to-date information as to the status of their project at any point in the process.”
For example, Superior Cabinets invites their customers to participate in an on-line customer survey. The results of the surveys help them to not only share successes with their staff, but to understand their challenges and give them the opportunity for improvement and to make the experience right with the customer. Their builder customers have dedicated account management who meet regularly to ensure service and quality levels are being met and to look for opportunities for continuous improvement.
It was after the economic boom in 20072008 that the company became aware of its need to refocus on improving the services they provided to their clients. “During this time,” says Neufeld, “we established measureable goals for our service levels, which at the time, based on our past performance, seemed unattainable. However, we have since achieved our goals, and even exceeded them. We can now measure our own performance on various important
With leading-edge show rooms in Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Fort McMurray, participation in home design shows and the use of new media, Superior Cabinets has always been a step ahead in defining the look and functionality of kitchens across western Canada. Their newly relaunched website (www.superiorcabinets.ca) offers the latest in design trends and know-how. Superior’s new website, designed and built by zu, a local company specializing
in web strategy, design and development, showcases their abundant kitchen styles and options with a presentation that is super functional, bright and spaciously arranged. As blogged on zuLive: “The crew at Superior took the same care and attention in their approach to a new website that cabinetmakers would take building cabinetry. [Their] goal was to position itself as a company that offered more than just cabinets. They provide not just products but service, from the beginning to end. The Superior team remains a support through the entire process to provide an outstanding and highlyregarded customer experience.” Although we are told not to judge a book by its cover, it is nearly impossible not to judge this highly successful company by its website—a virtual tool that is stylish, informative and interactive. Visitors can even book appointments with a kitchen designer online. With advancements in technology, a focus for Superior is enhancing the customer experience with the use of current technology not only online but in

superior cabinets their showrooms. Superior has invested in a concept fairly new to the industry. “Digital Showroom,” a tool designed to help the customer in the decision-making process, will be available online and in their showrooms this summer. It will allow the customer to visualize their space with a full colour, realistic rendering of their kitchen prior to placing the order. We all know that all homes are not cut from the same cloth, and neither are the specific needs and requirements of the people living there. The amount of time you spend in the kitchen, how you use your space and the functional needs of your family, are all considerations when thinking about layout designs. Along with the company’s superior solutions for kitchens, the Superior Cabinets’ design team can help to create great bathroom, laundry and home office spaces to ensure flow and functionality throughout your whole living space. egacy Homes are renowned as the height of residential craftsmanship—architecturally inspired masterpieces as distinctive and enduring as the landscape upon which they are built. For founder Grant Robertson, Legacy not only refers to the stunning homes his company builds, but his own personal philosophy. “It’s about luxury and longevity,” he says. “Beautiful concepts that are intended to endure through the ages. Excellence and quality—the homes we build, and the people we are.” Longevity indeed. Grant Robertson has been in the Saskatoon home construction industry for 35 years, and Legacy Homes is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary. With this level of experience, Robertson has a broad understanding of the skills required to build exquisite handcrafted homes that stand as landmarks in their respective communities. Together with business partner Bob Brown, Robertson says Legacy Homes has been continually energized by the innovations they’ve witnessed in the custom homebuilding industry. “The changes, they’ve been incredible,” Robertson says. “Construction and design products grow increasingly creative and exciting by the day. Whether a simple window or an entirely new construction process or manufacturer, the modern beauty and functionality of the products and people we work with is astounding.” From theatre rooms and home gyms to steam showers, the list of luxuries Robertson has developed with Legacy Homes’ clients is endless. Working hand in hand with a large network of tradespeople and suppliers—the kind of network that can only come with 35 years in the industry—allows him to deliver standards in product, service and quality that are rare in today’s market. And those networks continue to grow. “Our world is a much smaller place than it was 35 years ago.” Robertson reflects. “Modern home construction clients are much more sophisticated and well-traveled. Anything that’s new and hot, from Rome to Los Angeles, is only a mouse-click away.” Legacy Homes blends the finest in

custom home artistry with technology to redefine homebuilding excellence. Robertson highlights this fact when he describes a recent collaboration on the construction of a custom-built home in Saskatoon with a client living in Shanghai. “Basically, we modified and constructed much of the home online with the owner and his Washington architect,” he says. “It went surprisingly smoothly.” The client would see a concept or product in China—one Legacy Homes may have never heard of—and then ask Robertson and his team to find a way to incorporate it into the project. “We investigate and research manufacturers to find exotic, premium materials, and work with Canadian standards and regulations to get them here. Over 20 years we’ve sourced a lot of product, we know what’s involved.” That experience gives Legacy Homes’ clients the comfort of knowing they’re working with seasoned professionals who are always striving to supply a home of the finest quality and workmanship, while leaving no doubt on the level of exclusivity and performance they can expect. Robertson understands the complex variables of creating a home that takes advantage of views and sunlight, of floor plans that are laid out to be not only efficient but comfortable, and of an overall feeling of balance both inside and outside the dwelling. One of the keys to Legacy Homes’ success is their approach to the entire process. “Our clients are embarking on an exciting and engaging adventure with us as they create their dream home,” says Robertson. “We tell every one of our customers to do their due diligence—find a builder that is qualified. Make sure that the builder that you choose is someone you’re going to be able to work with for a year. Someone you can communicate with. Building a custom home does not have to be overwhelming or stressful. Have fun. Be creative.” You’ll find Grant and Bob out on Legacy Homes’ construction sites every single day, personally overseeing the building process and working alongside the same contractors they’ve worked with for years.

With a sense of pride in their work that only comes with years of gained wisdom and experience, Robertson sees every one of his homes completed through to the total satisfaction of the owners, designers, architects and to his own professional and personal standards. Measured not by the standards they meet but by the ones they set, Legacy Homes’ mandate is both simple and clear: to deliver the best. They understand the importance of moving beyond superior materials and the finest quality to offer an intimate and personal homebuilding experience. “People need to understand what the service provider, their homebuilder, considers value,” says Robertson. For him, value means a proper combination of price, quality and after-sale service. When it comes to price, Robertson’s approach is refreshingly straightforward: every client is treated exactly the same, regardless of their budget. The level of service is identical, and the only difference on a large-scale collaboration as opposed to a smaller one is the number of hours (in other words, the labour) it will take to complete the project. “I’m not entirely certain my former economics professors would agree with this approach,” laughs Robertson, “but at the end of the day we’re not about inflating prices for short-term gain. Our reputation is more important—it’s rock solid based on our honesty and our integrity. It’s how we’re able to celebrate 20 glorious years in the industry. We rely on it.” Today, Grant Robertson is proud to share that reputation with his two sons, ages 29 and 26, who have both joined their father to continue to build upon Legacy Homes’ success. “Bob and I, we’re not spring chickens anymore,” he says with a chuckle. “We’ve built a company we’re proud of, and I can’t think of anything more rewarding than sharing that legacy with my children.” Robertson’s older son has moved into the sales side of the business, looking after growth and expansion, as well as Legacy Homes’ service guarantees. His younger son is a recent graduate from the University of Saskatchewan, and handles the management aspects, from accounting
to business development. This frees Dad up to be on job sites and researching new property opportunities on stunning vistas such as The Willows, which is home to several of Legacy Homes’ gorgeous creations. Legacy Homes has a rich history of building homes of all sizes, including the larger, more intricate designs. “The customer comes to us with ideas and even more importantly, their family’s tastes, lifestyle and needs,” Robertson explains. “Then we put pencil to paper, determining their new home’s right size and flow. “One of the foremost things that we offer—besides our background and qualifications—is our finishing work,” he continues. “Our people are uniquely creative, skilful and take pride in what they do. The outcome is reflected in the product. It’s second to none.” The result is a perfectly tailored home —designed for living, and built beyond expectations. Dynamic duo takes online real estate shopping to new level BY TAMMY ROBERT Ninety per cent of homebuyers searched for real estate online in 2009 (National Association of Realtors, 2010 Survey Statistics). Tyler and Rylan Zolinski united their passion for photography and filmmaking with that revealing statistic to create Saskatoon Virtual Home Tours, a creative service offering property sellers photography and video for real estate tours. “Saskatoon Virtual Home Tours offer a service that many property sellers don’t have the time to create and market,” explains Rylan. “Our packages include professional photography and a professionally filmed video tour which is then uploaded to popular social media sites. We also create a disk at the end of the shoot that has all the photography of the real estate that the client will need for their marketing.”

“We attach distinguishing keywords to each video, which, in turn, is easily found by potential clients searching for real estate,” continues Tyler. “Our clients can then take the video link or video and attach it to their personal business websites or social media accounts such as YouTube, Twitter, or Facebook.” Saskatoon Virtual Home Tours offers the convenience, creativity and professionalism necessary for property sellers to showcase their products in a detailed, sophisticated manner. The end result is an increased impact on prospective homebuyers, who are thrilled with the advanced sneak peek inside a potential new home, and reduced time on the market at no added expense to sellers. “Coming from creative backgrounds, Saskatoon Virtual Home Tours is fulfilling
our dreams of success in a field that we’ve always aspired to be in,” says Rylan. “We’re assisting property sellers in marketing their real estate with a unique service that utilizes videography outlets which haven’t been used to their full potential—until now.”

or some, the idea of owning a home that allows you to escape from the rush of city life is a recurrent dream. A break from the hectic, the ownership of a beautiful home in a serene setting seems far too good to be true. But then there are those who choose Prairie Lane Builders, and, miraculously, all their dreams come true. Menno Martens, the founding partner in the firm has been building quality homes in and around Saskatoon for over 30 years, so it is easy to see that he knows a thing or too about giving his customers what they want. When he talks with a client, or potential homebuilder, Martens focuses in on giving them exactly what they want: a hassle and worry-free building project. Whether he is building homes on acreages or in the small towns surrounding the city, Martens takes personal care of each and every building project, ensuring that there are no hang-ups or wasted time. What he aims to do is give his customers a home they can be proud of, a space that is more than just a place to hang their hat. And what is the most important for him is that things go smoothly. After 25 years working in both home construction and a full time career, four years ago Martens took his passion for home construction and dove into it full-

time. Building six houses a year while working full-time had run its course, and after taking a retirement package he set out to build more homes. Being as hands-on as possible with as much of the work as he can, while also being there for his customers, Martens knows that not only is it imperative to stay on top of things, but knows how much easier it can make things in the long run. All the homes he builds are carefully organized and cleaned after every trade appointment. With over 15 trades going through the houses on their way to completion, Martens knows that running an efficient business keeps things going as smoothly as possible, and as safely. With over ten houses built per year, Prairie Lane Builders has grown and expanded given the extra effort of the owner. What sets the company apart is Martens’ involvement. At every stage of the game he is there to consult, meet, work, clean, and make sure the property is ready for the customer. Whether inspecting one of the three spec homes he builds at any given time, or in one of the custom creations for clients, Martens is aware of every detail. “I know exactly what I am handing over to my customer,” he says. “I know every house, and I know all my trades. one works to a standard both the company the customer can be proud of.” A member of the Canadian Home Builders Association, Martens knows that what he does for his customers reflects on him. Most of his business comes from referrals from past customers as well as through the word of mouth. What many people comment on when viewing a home he has built is the quality workmanship in every square inch of every home. With so much detail going into every home it is no wonder that Prairie Lane homes are often used to train potential Home Inspectors, because of the very few flaws in every design it trains the eye of the inspector. This alone, is a testament to the effort and dedication that Prairie Lane puts into their projects. Involved from start to finish in all the projects he takes on, Martens is able to make construction of a new home as easy as possible for his clients. Taking out permits for them, and dealing with trades and construction, Martens knows that by being there every step of the way he can ensure there are no delays or problems caused by the “too many cooks in the kitchen” syndrome often felt in new home construction. Also, by being there to see every step of the way he can hand over the keys to a new home with pride.
A typical home package from Prairie Lane comes standard with high-end materials such as hardwood flooring, custom tile, and quartz countertops. Homes vary is size from 1,350 to 2,000 square feet, ranging in style from raised bungalows to two story homes, or walk-out basements—a wide variety of homes, suitable for a company that aspires to give their customers everything they want. The locations of houses and show homes are scattered throughout greater Saskatoon and area. Mostly, however, the company focuses on creating quiet rural and serene escapes outside of Saskatoon in mostly Martensville and Warman with some in Battleford and occasionally within the Saskatoon city limits or Cherry Hills Acreages. As a member of the Saskatchewan Home Builders’ Association, Prairie Lane Builders offers their customers warranty under the Progressive Home Warranty Program, giving their customers even more peace of mind after choosing Prairie Lane to construct their dreams. From start to finish, those who choose Prairie Lane Builders are treated with the utmost care.
The company is essentially a family business with son Brayden Martens lending his skills and abilities to his father’s firm, and Helen Hyde, Martens’ sister handling the sales of each of his homes. This start to finish attitude is what gives the customers such great care and satisfaction in their homes. With Helen Hyde as the listing agent, they know their property is being handled by an expert professional. No one knows more about the houses than her, except of course, Martens himself. So if it is a pleasant hideaway you seek, or just a home to be proud of, when it comes to building it is easy to see why so many choose to ask for Prairie Lane Builders. With their start-to-finish attitude on their move-in-ready models or their custom creations, Prairie Lane Builders has just the home with you in mind.FHS Prairie Lane Builders Inc. From start to finish, the Westridge team showed us professionalism through and through. Whether it was working on the design of the home, picking colors, flooring or dealing with the trades, every aspect of our home was handled with the greatest care.
Most importantly it was truly a FUN experience. Westridge came highly recommended to us and I can see why. Now it is our pleasure to recommend them to anyone thinking of building a new home.” -Duane & Dawn

Saskatchewan continues to benefit from increased potash production, rising commodity prices, and an upswing in activity in the oil and gas sector. Positive growth has returned to the manufacturing and wholesale sectors. The construction sector is also forecast to ramp up, particularly in terms of non-residential activity. Government spending on new and on-going capital projects related to health, education, transportation and infrastructure is predicted to support continued economic growth in Saskatoon. In February, Enterprise Saskatchewan Minister Jeremy Harrison announced that Regina and Saskatoon were included in a handful of Canadian cities that will prosper in 2011. An important factor of a strong housing market is the activity experienced in new home sales. Saskatoon’s new home market remains strong with steady city lot sales taking place. Interest rates are favorable to purchase that next home and job creation in the Saskatoon area remains steady. The forecast for the remainder of 2011 is for listing and sales numbers to continue to balance and for resale prices to move up slightly due to demand.
Saskatoon Real Estate Reflections: Saskatoon house prices hold steady in Q1-2011 despite the illusion of softening.

Sales in January and February were stronger this year compared to last year while this March proved to be weaker than 2010. The 2011 residential resale market started on a positive note with Saskatoon Realtors assisting 195 homebuyers with the purchase of their dream home—up 10 per cent from 2010 when 178 homes were sold. The year began with a “bang” in the price range of $300,000 to $350,000. This range remained the most active until March, when the real estate marketplace gave the illusion of softening—just slightly. I say illusion because it was a shift of
focus in the marketplace that created this alteration. With the amortization regulation changes and the deadline of mid-March, the purchasing volumes heated up in the entry and mid-priced homes in the $250,000 to $275,000 price range. This was clearly an indication of people taking advantage of their options before the deadline of March 15.
Saskatoon Real Estate April 2011: Inventory levels remain steady providing homebuyers with a reasonable number of homes to select from. Saskatoon sales volumes slightly slipped in April with 343 homes selling as compared to 369 home sales in April 2010. The slower sales were likely due to the effects of a long winter and some uncertainty regarding interest rates. The average residential selling price in April was $315,866. This is up 6 per cent from April 2010. Inventory levels continued to correct in the month of April. Homebuyers had 1,300 homes to select from at the end of the month, up slightly from April 2010 when 1,258 homes were on the market. REALTORS® listed 634 homes in April, down 19 per cent from April 2010 when 784 properties were listed for sale. Year-to-date 2,403 properties have been listed for sale, that number on par with 2010 when 2,383 were placed on the market for sale.

iving in a condo doesn’t mean living without fresh herbs for salads or the cooking pot. With enough sun and a little effort anyone can grow a pot-full of potables right outside their door. While agriculture, the systematic growing of plants for food, is thought to have begun 8,000 to 9,000 years ago, it wasn’t until the time of the Egyptian Pharaohs that
the distinction between horticulture (garden culture) and agriculture first became distinct. With large areas devoted to field crops surrounding population centres, many garden crops, such as cucumbers, onions, lettuce, mint, chicory, radish and melons were grown within protective walls surrounding homes and communities. It was thanks to these walled gardens, especially those surrounding medieval
monasteries, that many of the plants we know today survived the destruction of the Dark Ages. The monks were among the first to grow herbs for medicinal uses, as well as herbs for the soup pot. Today’s herb aficionados can easily have their own kitchen garden. Just place a pot full of aromatic herbs on the balcony or outside the kitchen door for easy access. Snipping off what you need as

you need it ensures fresh herbs for your table and also keeps the plants growing bushy and strong. Whether you have a green thumb or not, you can have your own pasta or pizza sauce. Just add garlic! THE POT Like your property itself, the main consideration for growing tomatoes and herbs in containers is location, location, location. Most herbs, and the tomatoes, require at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. If you live somewhere without a south or west exposure, check out your local farmers’ market for your ingredients. TO BUILD YOUR OWN PIZZA OR SOUP POT, YOU’LL NEED: A pot at least 16 inches in diameter, soil, sand and small rocks and gravel, perlite, bedding plants. To prepare your pots to grow your own kitchen garden, place a small piece of screen over the drainage holes in the bottom of the pots and add at least two inches of coarse sand and small rocks and pebbles to ensure proper drainage. Mix a good quality potting soil with 1/4 of its volume perlite or other similar material to keep the soil from compacting. You can use plastic pots placed inside decorative ceramic or other containers, or the containers themselves. Just be sure there is adequate drainage and, depending on the material and the colour of the pot, you may need to water more often. Dark plastic pots, for example, heat up quickly in the sun and need more water. THE POTABLES The main ingredients for a Pizza Pot are oregano, basil and tomato, but you can also grow other herbs such as parsley, chives, dill, thyme or any herb that strikes your fancy. ‘Roma’ or ‘Patio’ tomatoes are the best for container growing, but if you just want tomatoes for a salad, try one of the small fruit kinds, such as ‘Tiny Tim.’ Some garden centres carry large, well-established tomato plants and/or ‘Tumbler’ tomatoes in hanging baskets. There are numerous different kinds of basil, from the familiar soft green ‘Sweet Basil’ to the purple ‘Dark Opal’—the flavours vary so try a few to see which

you prefer. All basils require full sun, but be careful not to overwater. Pinch the growing tips of shoots to promote strong, bushy growth and prune off flowers as soon as they appear. For the best flavour, use the youngest, most tender leaves. That tenderness requires the same care in handling– basil leaves bruise easily so handle them carefully and use a sharp knife. The best way to keep basil is to freeze it—finely chop the leaves before putting them into ice cube trays, cover with water and freeze. Once frozen, pop the basil cubes into a separate container and keep in the freezer to add to sauces. OREGANO Don’t confuse oregano with its close relative marjoram. They taste similar, but marjoram is somewhat sweeter. The best oregano for pizza sauce is Greek Oregano, with its strong, yet not overwhelming, flavour.

urt Kolisnek has always been a highly-motivated individual, envisioning great success. During his high-school years in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, Kurt began to focus on realworld business ideas he could pursue prior to graduation. He was attracted to real estate, taking special notice of how ownership of homes and land provided financial stability and long-term potential. At the age of 17, he took the plunge into ownership of his first property. While many of Kolisnek’s peers had not formulated their plan for the future, he had already taken the first major step toward creating the company he has today. “It was challenging, to a degree,” Kurt recalls, “because at that stage of life, some realtors or bankers refused to take me seriously. Some discouraged me from taking on the responsibility, but I knew the direction I was taking was right for me.” Today, Kolisnek believes that taking that critical financial step was a major turning point in his life. Within a few months, the investment decision was paying dividends. Not only had he secured his own home, it was generating positive cash-flow. “I renovated the home, building a rental suite in the basement,” Kurt explains. “In addition, two rooms were suitable for rent upstairs. My monthly mortgage payment was $210 and my monthly rental revenue was $910. This formula seemed

like magic to me, and the light-bulb turned on in my head. All I wanted was to duplicate that model over and over again.” Kolisnek’s pursuit of rental property brought the blossoming developer to Saskatoon. He acquired his second property—a home in College Park—at the age of 19 during his apprenticeship to become a journeyman electrician. At that time, Kurt’s parents were impressed, but nervous on his behalf. Their concern was that he was simply moving too fast, and taking on too much financial responsibility. “Of course,” Kurt recalls, “their concern only served to further motivate me. My drive to succeed was now fuelled by my desire to prove to my family that I could be successful. Failure was never an option in my mind.” In the ensuing period of full-time work on his apprenticeship, combined with full-time work on real estate acquisition and renovations, sleep took a back seat. Kurt worked around the clock, frequently drawing an unknown audience of neighbours in the early hours of the morning. “I remember working from 9 a.m. right through until 6 a.m. the following day for a three-month stint in order to complete one of my properties on schedule. One of the neighbour ladies said to me, ‘Kurt, I grew up during the Depression when people would literally work themselves to death, but I’ve never seen anyone work like you. Folks around here get up in the middle of the night just to see what you’re up to.’” As a journeyman electrician, Kurt eventually followed the money to Fort McMur-
ray, Alberta as so many young, Saskatchewan tradespeople did in the late 1990s. “I saw great opportunities for myself ‘next door.’ The fast pace and pure work ethic of Fort Mac drew me, and I hoped to achieve great success there.” Becoming a journeyman was a good decision. The demand for skilled eIectricians was growing at that time, and Kolisnek was able to find lucrative work with relative ease. “I had previously done work of all sorts, and although I don’t mind hard physical labour, having a skilled trade was more rewarding and left me with more energy and the cash I needed to begin aggressively pursuing real estate.” The “side job” of real estate quickly became Kurt’s primary focus and he immediately began acquiring and improving multiple properties. Soon, he was back to working virtually around the clock. “I would catch a nap on the bus headed to and from work, or in my real estate lawyer’s office lobby when I was waiting for appointments,” he recalls. With commendable determination and hard work, Kurt succeeded as a small-scale residential developer in Fort McMurray, completing 50 individual projects. However, he was still far from realizing his vision. His intention was to become a premier developer, and launch multi-family and commercial projects. Scarce availability of property in Fort McMurray was a limiting factor in his business plan, and, coinciden-

detrimental to my clients or customers. I prefer a sterling reputation with lesser profits over the inverse equation any day.” Salient and Kolisnek Developments became acquainted when they were seated together during a networking breakfast at the Saskatoon Club. “We sensed a good synergy with Kurt, and got along well from the first handshake,” recalls Daniel Clermont, another founding partner of Salient. “A few days later, we were sitting around a conference table, already mapping out a comprehensive cooperative business plan. Our collective vision brought Urban Equity into view.”

Urban Equity Inc. is a collaboration between Kolisnek Developments and Salient designed to offer the opportunity to take advantage of incomegenerating real estate in Saskatchewan with a minimal investment. Investment will benefit Kolisnek by way of convenience to capitalize projects efficiently, but the benefits to the investor are also clear—collateral security, attractive rates of return, and RRSP/TFSA eligibility. “After all,” Kurt asks, “who wouldn’t want an investment of this level of quality collateral in their RRSPs?” Urban Equity is not a typical high-risk real estate investment company says Ray Hassan, the third of Salient’s founding trio.
tally, Saskatoon was beginning to boom. Kurt realized that life was telling him to head back home, to Saskatchewan. Building on a foundation of early success, he began to make his larger dreams come true in Saskatoon with the purchase of some of Saskatoon’s most ideal real estate on College Drive. A SERENDIPITOUS MEETING Real Estate and construction has never been just about building personal wealth for Kurt. So once the prestigious J.B. Black Estates condominium and business project was underway, he saw an opportunity to start building the community. “Meeting Kurt was refreshing,” recalls
Derek Fuller, one of the three founding members of Salient Consulting, a local firm specializing in real-estate investment products. “Here was a successful developer with a humble attitude, a visionary without the oversized ego, and a desire to conduct business in a fair and balanced manner.” Real estate investment is an arena in which large fees, inflexible agreements, and one-sided advantage are commonplace. Kurt’s philosophy was unique, as he places personal integrity and his family name at the top of his priority list. “There is no question that profit is important in business,” Kurt says. “But profit can’t come through a process that is
“In our experience developers only solicit investment because they are at a risky phase in the project cycle, and they can’t obtain financing from other sources,” he says. “J.B. Black Estates is already fully funded. We’re doing this to attract our initial base of investors.” Kurt’s motives are simple. “If I offer Saskatchewan families the chance to participate in this high-profile project, it will be a true win-win. It will bring a good client base to Urban Equity while providing a much-needed solution for their portfolios. This move will create greater opportunities for myself and the investors.” J.B. On the ground floor, 16,000 square feet of premium commercial space will provide high visibility to business occupants. “It’s close to, well... everything,” Daniel Clermont says. Indeed. The Allure of the North Candle Lake combines luxury and wilderness for residents and visitors BY TRILBY HENDERSON
Set just inside the boreal forest less than an hour northeast of Prince Albert, the Resort Village of Candle Lake has become one of the most desirable year-round recreation destinations in Saskatchewan. Even its name, derived from a Cree Indian belief that unexplained light can be seen floating above the lake’s surface, evokes an image of beauty. Then there is the lake itself, a pristine body of water that boasts some of the country’s best inland beaches, including Wasketeena, Sandy Bay and Minowukaw. Throw in the lake’s natural sand dunes, vast surrounding forest and unique features such as the purple sand that covers areas of its shoreline, and its no wonder Candle

Lake is considered by many to be the best resort village in the province. Debra Hunter and her husband, Dave, readily tout the area’s many attractive features, including its renowned hunting and fishing. Hunter said they spent years vacationing at Candle Lake before making Minowukaw—the village’s easternmost subdivision—their permanent home in 2002. As an avid hunter and fisherman, Dave had spent much of his childhood in the area and had always planned to one day live there year-round. Of course, non-sportsmen can also appreciate the community’s proximity to the wild. Hunter said it’s common to
see wildlife within the village’s borders, particularly during the quiet off-season. “There’s so much to see,” she said. “Here, the outdoors is just amazing.” Candle Lake offers plenty of opportunity to experience and enjoy the outdoors. In the winter, visitors travel for miles to crosscountry ski on the groomed trails, and go snowmobiling or ice fishing. Summer activities are even more abundant, from hiking, biking, quading and golf to boating, water sports and swimming. With its large surface area and numerous sand beaches, including a few that can only be accessed by boat, Candle Lake is both a magnet for vivacious summer fun and a haven for rest and relaxation.

Fishing, Candle Lake Provincial Park Photo Credit: Tourism Saskatchewan / Paul Austring During the peak summer months, Hunter says the number of residents in the community more than triples. This doesn’t include the hundreds of visitors who come to stay at the campgrounds, RV parks, hotels and cabins within the resort village itself and the neighboring Candle Lake Provincial Park. Hunter said the tight-knit community also offers a number of organized social activities, including yoga and other fitness classes, a children’s playgroup, swimming lessons and arts clubs. The nearby Candle Lake Provincial Park also hosts a range of events during peak summer months, including performances by well-known music artists such as the Saskatchewan Express. Hunter said one of the more popular attractions in the area is the Timberland Gallery, owned by award-winning artist Dennis Chamberlain, whose photographic

When it comes to man-made structures, many would consider the Candle Lake Golf Resort to be the area’s crowning jewel. The world-class facility provides the perfect setting for guests to enjoy luxury and comfort in the midst of the lake’s serene natural splendor.
offers visitors several opportunities to experience the best of both. For one, guests can enjoy a delicious meal or meet friends for a cool drink at the Water’s Edge Restaurant and Lounge, with a magnificent panoramic view of the lake as a backdrop. Or they can park their boats in one of the 180 slips at the golf resort’s inland marina, the largest at Candle Lake, after enjoying a full day out on the water.
According to James Michayluk, director of marketing for the golf resort, the challenging 18-hole course is one of the features that makes Candle Lake Saskatchewan’s finest resort village. The last three holes of the course run alongside the lake, providing players with a breathtaking view of the shoreline as they hit the homestretch.
Michayluk said the landscape found north of Prince Albert is unlike any other, and believes all Saskatchewan residents should bear witness to the beauty of the area at least once. And of course, whether looking for place to call home or to simply spend a summer vacation, Candle Lake is a great place to sample the allure of the north.
Michayluk’s other two favourite features of the area are the lake itself and the people, and the Candle Lake Golf Resort

varying things up with—GREY. I have had a life-long love affair with grey but substituting one for another is, well, it’s basically admitting that beige is a gateway colour, if you know what I mean. It’s not that I’m against neutrals. I’m not. I revere them. I use them like Donald Trump uses hairspray. However, there are ways to use them and ways not to use them. Paint your walls in warm off-whites or muted tones. If you want to do a neutral sofa, that’s fine but if you have neutrals on your walls and sofas you need to liven things up somewhere else. In my own home, I have opted for a muted non-colour tint on the wall, a light grey with hint of lavender on the sofa, and a grey and white wool carpet—a basic platform on which I’ve layered, indigo (chairs), cobalt (drapery) and coral red (pillows). The drapery and the pillows have these bold splashes of colour on a neutral cream background to pull them back into the neutrals in the room. If I opted for fabrics without a neutral backdrop, I would achieve a colour-blocking effect—a great look, but not so much for a narrow Victorian. Just remember, you can start slow, but the world around you isn’t monochrome so why do you force yourself to live in a house that is?FHS

THERE IS MORE TO GETTING
A GOOD NIGHT’S REST THAN FALLING ASLEEP Specialty shop makes getting the right mattress painless BY SUZANNE HUBER. PHOTOS BY LISA LANDRIE It was five years ago that Wiseguys Mattresses founder, Mark Stevens, decided to start up a specialty bedding store in Saskatoon. His intentions were clear, exceed his customer’s expectations when looking for a good night’s rest, and offer unbeatable customer service at the same time. Mark and his employee Steve Leung believe the general public do not understand the service and value they should be receiving from retailers when shopping for a new mattress today. The Wiseguys store offers a variety of brands and styles of bedding to suit a wide range of customers from the economical student to professionals wanting high end speciality bedding and sheets. Much of the merchandise offered at the location cannot be found at any other retailer in the city, same goes with his unwavering desire to fit the needs of anyone looking to sleep comfortably. “I’m the owner, salesperson, delivery driver, customer service, etcetera , and you deal with me for everything. It’s my name on the line and nobody will take better care of you than me,” says Mark. WHAT MAKES A GOOD NIGHT’S REST? A common mattress misconception is that a firm surface is good for a bad back. This is just simply not true. Wiseguys can match the right bed for each individual, meeting their customers’ needs by edu-

cating everyone that enters their location on what truly makes a good night’s rest. From particular coils to specialty brands, Mark can determine what type of mattress will result in the healthiest sleep pattern at maximum comfort regardless of whether you go to the chiropractor, have joint pain, back problems or motion transfer. WHEN YOU SHOULD BUY A NEW BED The timing for a new mattress is dependent on a few factors including usage and past quality. Typically a bed should be replaced when you find that it is no longer comfortable or when you find you are waking up frequently throughout the night resulting in feeling exhausted and sleepy during the day. People often come into the store looking for a bed for their spare bedroom or cabin. Depending on how old their existing bed is, Mark usually finds more value in buying a new one for their main usage as it is more worthwhile over the long run. WHAT YOU ARE GETTING FOR YOUR MONEY Mattresses and other merchandise prices at Wiseguys Mattresses are offered to customers without the usual retail mark ups. Mark is able to offer the best options, as all inventories are mindfully handpicked from a variety of factories. His customers travel hundreds of miles to get quality you can’t find in chain stores. Wiseguys ensures there are no hidden costs or delivery charges, nor do employees work on commission. You get more bed for your dollars. The philosophy behind the Wiseguys
strategy is quite simple, offering value to their customers through a boutique style shopping experience, customized service and unbeatable prices. They want every customer to leave the store confident in their purchase and with a guaranteed good night’s rest.

OLD FASHIONED SERVICE Mark works around the schedule and convenience of his customers. He has had beds delivered at 6 a.m. all the way into 11 p.m., depending on the demands of clients’ lives. “People don’t realize what being a customer is these days,” says Mark. He finds that people come into the store and are timid about asking for the service that they should receive automatically. Mark enjoys offering his expertise to customers, helping them find a bed that meets their needs. THANK YOU FROM CUSTOMERS Wiseguys Mattresses’ past customers are so pleased that they often come back into the store for coffee and a visit. It is common for his customers to bring in their friends since they know that Mark will take good care of them. Mark’s office is routinely decorated with thank you cards from his customers who appreciated the quality of the shopping experience. “I am continuously being told by my customers that he is fantastic to deal with,” says Mark referring to his employee of three years Steve Leung. There are few things we value more than old photographs, whether they are photos or historical images. They give us a direct connection with the past in a very personal way. But sadly, many of these old images are in rough shape, either because of neglect, accidents, or just the passage of time. Fortunately, it is often possible to use digital editing software to restore old photographs, repairing any damaged, smudged, or discoloured areas. After a high resolution digital copy of a photograph is created, treasured, aged photographs can be given new life and preserved for future generations. Newer photos can be corrected, enhanced, and even combined with others to create the perfect image. We offer a wide variety of restoration and enhancement services, such as repairing torn, stained, creased, or faded photographs; correcting tone and colours; removing distracting objects, unsightly blemishes; cropping to improve composition; and much more!

It’s absolutely amazing what can be done with the new technology, including: • Enhance, correct, or enlarge your photo without distortion or loss of quality.
• Eliminate flaws, marks or scratches. • Remove fading • Dry mounting, laminating, and framing of photographs or canvases and prints. • Turning photographs into paintings for living room decorating. • You can create a work of art that means something to you by turning your photographs into prints on canvas. Decorating a nursery or a teenager’s room with prints on canvas from their special photographs is easier than ever. And prints may be enlarged or reduced to fit a specific space. • Giclée printing on canvas is a modern alternative to traditional methods of fine-art reproduction such as lithogra phy. In giclée printing, original paintings, drawings and other artworks are digitally scanned. Then, the computerized images are sent to sophisticated ink jet printers, which reproduce the images onto canvas or archival heavy weight bond paper. The resulting image is very high quality, with colour close to the original that will last many years. At J&S Picture Frame Warehouse we will not only print scanned artwork onto canvas, but we will do laminating and stretching of the finished canvas. Canvases may be gallery wrapped, the process of extending the image or adding an extended border of colour in order to fix canvas to the back of the stretcher frame instead of the side Gallery-wrapped images may be displayed as they are or have a frame added as we have complete resources for framing with pre-made and custom-made framing.

CHANTELLE Dear Chantelle, The kitchen is new as is the flooring. The bar top needs to be done—I just haven’t figured out shape or material because we have a granite island and laminate counter tops. Dining room needs all new furniture—thinking of doing a built-in window seat for the table that will double as craft storage. The two lightcoloured couches are going to go into the basement, which we are currently renovating. -Michelle
Hi Michelle, Thanks for asking me to help you your home! I wish you luck with basement reno and am happy to you can put the couches to good
with your hear use.
The addition of a boat shaped peninsula top creates a great conversation area. Everyone is on a slight curve and can make eye contact with one another. The middle of the counter top should be 15 to 18 inches deep and the same laminate as the kitchen counter below it. This will make your kitchen look larger. If you were to use the granite from your island it would catch your eye and make the kitchen look smaller. A second option would be to have a custom, maple, wood top stained in your kitchen cabinet colour, antiqued with imperfections to add warmth and character. I only recommend this idea if you are comfortable with a slightly rustic feel. The photo looks like you have room for four or five stools. I like to use leather, but vinyl works well for busy families. Look for black, white or lime uphol stery. You’ll find them at Sew and Home or International Furniture Wholesale. I love the idea of using a built-in unit for storage. I’ve never heard anyone say they have too much storage. A longer table, centred under the light, four chairs and

I would look for a double pedestal or table with four or six legs, as they are more stable than the single pedestal you have now. On the wall adjacent to your shelves, is the perfect place to add a little of your family’s personality with a long, narrow piece of art. A custom piece like the by Diane would be perfect. if you would like to contact the artist you can find her at artworkbydiane.shawwebspace.ca
Last, but not least, I would rearrange your funky shelves with a few larger pieces. You could try the asymmetrical arrangement I’ve drawn or stick to a symmetrical layout using larger pieces with the heaviest pieces on the bottom.
Stainless plates with grey or black switches and outlets are a small detail which will have big impact. A complementary colour would help them blend seamlessly into the
Thanks again Michelle, I hope this helps and I look forward to your after photos! Sincerely, Chantelle Butterfield

t’s the centerpiece of the Norman Rockwell-esque kitchen, the warm glow of enamel and chrome gleam that defines the dignified and squat woodburning cook stove. A romantic appliance, but probably not so much for those who lived at the turn of the 20th Century and through the Depression years and faced the wood chopping, water hauling, and sending children to split kindling. Today, the allure appeals to people like Tereigh Ewart-Bauer and Egan Bauer. To recapture the 1920s ambiance of their lovingly restored Riversdale home, their ‘must have’ list included a wood burning cookstove. No longer simply the cast-iron workhorse of yesteryear, today’s cookstoves marry the nostalgia of great-grandmother’s farm kitchen with the opulence of a highend, high-efficiency kitchen technology. In Canada, Heartland Appliances manufactures a range of top-of-the-line appliances that range in style from period pieces to retro to boldly modern. Tereigh and Egan’s Classic 9200 model conjures images of Olivia Walton preparing Sunday dinner. Tereigh hungrily

researched how to satisfy her love of original character and passion for cooking and baking. Many gas ranges were less expensive, but none evoked the nostalgia and elegance of the wood-burning cookstove as well as the Heartland line. “I’ve always been a lover of all things old,” Tereigh explains. “Egan calls me an old soul, and that’s why we bought our house, built in 1927 in Riversdale, a gorgeous core neighbourhood with homes that still retain their character. I wish I could say that I bought the stove because I have childhood attachments, but sadly, my early memories are of 1970s avocado green appliances!” Once Tereigh had fallen in love with the modern cookstove, her love affair nearly fizzled over the price. The one she wanted, the Classic, was over $5,000. “What prevented me from falling out of love was my faith that we
would find a used one, and we did.” The couple set off on a two-day journey to Green Lake, B.C.—sleeping in their cargo van in the mountains—to collect their baby. Once home, Tereigh, an educational development specialist at the University of Saskatchewan, spent days peeling off layers of drywall, plaster and wallpaper to uncover the original brick chimney. “Thrilled to be rid of a muchhated ceramic-top range,” Tereigh says Egan, a general contractor, did some exquisite tile work, and the ‘new’ stove looked like it was meant to be there. “My favourite meal to prepare is East Indian food,” says Tereigh, “but I have to admit that there is a special feeling that comes from cooking a ‘traditional’ meal like turkey and all the fixings. I feel like I’ve been transported back in time when I use the range for that kind of meal, and find myself imagining who used to cook the same meal in my
kitchen, on a wood stove, 84 years ago.” Famous in her circles as an exceptional baker, Tereigh says the stove is not only a visual delight, but a baker’s dream. “The oven is so even; it makes the meanest cheesecake I’ve ever been able to make in any oven I’ve ever owned! And being able to make a mean kahlua mochaccino cheesecake is very important!” When Tereigh and Egan decided to redo their kitchen, they wanted to do it right. “Everything within reason, but still we didn’t want to cut any corners or have any regrets, so there are a few things we really went all out on,” she explains. “Clearly the stove was one of them. We weren’t just buying a stove of exceptional quality, but a conversation piece, almost a piece of art. It really sets the tone in the kitchen, and acts as a time transporter! It’s hard to put a price on that.”FHS

Shaughnessy Appliance: Where service is not just part of our company name BY DANIEL DALMAN The old adage reads that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. This is true for most things in life, and especially true when it comes to home appliances. From time to time things make funny noises, and whirl and twerp like they shouldn’t. TVs go blank, elements burn out, and freezers stop freezing. If you’re lucky enough to live in Saskatoon, there is no question as to who to call when this happens. Shaughnessy Appliance

FineHomes SASKATOON
Services have been the steadfast foot soldiers of appliance repair and service for nearly 30 years. Founded in 1982 by Dwayne Andreen, the business has grown and expanded to become the largest home appliance repair and service dealer in the city. With their expert, factory-trained technicians and their exceptional office staff, there are no concerns when it comes to having
an appliance repaired or replaced either in your home, or at their service center. With respect to fulfilling warranties, the staff of Shaughnessy is in direct training with the factories, fostering expertise and knowledge in the service department. The 100 per cent locally-owned company is a family business, a benefit that is not lost on their customers. Ken Andreen, partner and general manager joined
his father’s business in 1995 with sonin-law Dan Focht joining in 2006 as a partner and technician. What they have witnessed in years past is the growth and expansion of the business to include four full time service techs, two inside techs, and three office staff. The company has also seen advancement in technology, something they keep up to date with in monthly skill and product demonstrations its staff members attend. Armed with iPads in the repair department and GPS tracking in all of their service vans, the team of Shaughnessy Appliance is at the forefront of the repair industry. With the tech-savvy, clean-cut, professionals within the Shaughnessy team, and the partners working alongside the technicians, clients are put at ease when opening the door for service calls. Whether in their business or in their homes, customers know they are getting nothing short of the best by choosing Shaughnessy.
With a large parts department for DIY shoppers and a sales and service department in a warehouse style showroom, Shaughnessy Appliance Service offers new and used appliances. They carry major appliance brands and a wide selection of accessories and parts within the Jessop Avenue location. What customers can take away from their interactions with Shaughnessy is the feeling that the professional staff has treated them fairly and justly. “The business has been built on honesty and integrity,” says owner Dwayne Andreen, “We do honest work, and only install necessary parts and our customers respect that and keep coming back.” And it is easy to see why. The team is fun-loving and obviously cares about the job they are doing. What Shaughnessy gives to their employees is the feeling of being part of a family, and a sense of appreciation. “There is a positive energy
here,” says office manager Coralene Fehr. “We all mesh really well and we are there for them when they need us.” It’s a sentiment that their customers can solace in. So when you hear that bump in the night, when the dishwasher doesn’t sound quite right, or when the oven lets you down, the team at Shaughnessy Appliance Service will be there. Their group of experienced, professional and courteous technicians is there to take care of, and repair any problem your home appliances face. From dishwashers, to refrigerators, to flat panel TVs Shaughnessy is there to meet your needs.

answer or quick fix and they don’t want to do the work finding out for themselves. So why are we so uninformed with so much information around? Knowledge that used to get passed down from grandfather to son to grandson just isn’t getting passed down anymore. I was going to give this little tool set—it’s the cutest thing, real tools but small, perfect for a child—to one of my
grandsons, who is 7, last Christmas. I put a hardhat and a tool belt on him and he just wasn’t interested. He told me, ‘Not now, maybe when I’m older’ and went into the house. Kids don’t see dad or granddad fixing or building stuff. Today, many people simply have no clue whatsoever about how to do even basic things. People think it’s so simple and easy because they saw in on the TV or read about it on the Internet. They have the barest
minimum of knowledge and let me tell you it’s unimaginable the waste it leads to. People get the wrong thing or don’t know how to work with something the right way. What’s worse is there’s no one around to show them how to do it right. A lot of the stores proudly market themselves on being staffed with experts though. I’m not harping on big box retailers, I swear, but you’ve seen those aprons they wear and all those buttons they have on them right? That’s a button for every department they’ve worked in. They’re seldom in one department long enough to really get any real expertise in it before they move on. Back when I had my own Windsor Plywood store, even back before that when I was with Beaver Lumber, when a customer wanted to know where something was they weren’t sent off in a vague direction to where it might be; we took the customer there ourselves and when he got to the part or the product we explained it to them, and most times we’d grab a trainee to come along and learn how to advise and educate the customer so they’d learn to do that too.
And you’re not a fan of the Internet as a source of insight? I’ve got a website and it’s full of information, but people pick up what they want. Most people today are what I call label readers. They read the label and that’s the sum total of what they know about a product. They don’t even read the label that well. I get calls from people lots asking, say, if they can use a kitchen and bathroom paint in a dining room. Well, yeah, of course they can, but they ask about it. Look at it another way. Say someone buys deck paint. They see the word ‘deck’ and just slap it down whichever way. Next summer they’re calling me asking why it’s coming off. “Well, what kind of deck was it for?” I’ll ask, because I know they stopped at ‘deck’ and did not read whether it was for cedar or lumber or what-have-you.FHS

EXPERTAdvice Get your air conditioner in tip-top shape or shop for a new one
It’s that time of year! PHOTOS BY GRANT ROMANCIA
With the chance of frost still hanging in the air, it’s hard to think about air conditioning. Walking into a nice, cool house after a long, exhausting day at work is a luxury we often take for granted. All of us living in Saskatchewan know that an air conditioner is essential to enduring a hot prairie summer in comfort, even though it is a relatively short season. Air conditioning is essential, therefore, it is critical to be ready for those smoldering days when temperatures rise and the heat becomes unbearable. In fact, you would be wise to install or tune up your A/C in June to avoid the inevitable July rush! Before making a call to an air conditioning service company, ask yourself these questions when deciding whether an air conditioner repair is needed or if it needs to be replaced: • Is your existing air conditioner broken again? • Does it seem that you just had it fixed?
Clint & Carla Nagy McGill’s Mechanical Services 502 Avenue M South Saskatoon, SK S7M 2K9 Phone: 664-3050 Fax: 664-3070 helpdesk@mcgillsmechanical.com
• Are your electric bills higher than normal? • Is your air conditioner becoming unreliable? • Does your home have humidity problems? • Are you facing a costly repair on a major component? • Is your existing air conditioner more than 10 years old? • Is your air conditioning system noisy? If you answered “no” to most of these questions, then you are probably in need of just a maintenance check or repair. If you answered “yes” to a few of the above questions, then it might be time to replace your existing air conditioner with a newer and more efficient one. In either case, start by calling a company like McGill’s Mechanical Service who has experience and expertise in servicing all

types of air conditioners and in assessing your air conditioning needs. Although replacing an A/C system can be expensive, remember that it is probably one of the most important appliances you will purchase for your home. Also, although the initial investment might seem expensive, air conditioners today are more efficient with higher SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) ratings than their older counterparts. For example, Carrier ACs use Puron® Refrigerant which is environmentally sound and won’t deplete the ozone layer. A more efficient system will not only save you money on your electric bill, but will also provide piece-of-mind since you now have a reliable system. Chances are, you will not walk into a house that feels like an oven anymore! Well before the summer begins, most manufacturers and HVAC companies like Carrier put cooling systems on sale or provide excellent rebates. If you are upgrading to a new AC system the provincial government will provide you with a rebate of $300. And although you will still be eligible for the provincial rebate, once the hot weather arrives, you can expect higher prices and more demand. Get a head start on the summer cooling season. Start shopping today for an air conditioner that keeps you comfortable during Saskatchewan’s unpredictable prairie summers. The professionals at McGill’s can help you find the best system for your home, too. Call us for expert advice and quality service.

Much, much more than meets the ply BY SUZANNE HUBER Windsor Plywood in Saskatoon is locally owned and operated by Al and Arlene Olson. They realize it takes more than just good products to retain and attract customers. They aim at building a relationship with everyone who walks through the doors, learning about individual projects in customers’ homes

and then offering expert advice on the ‘how to’ and ‘with what.’ Often compared to that of a small town vibe, Windsor Plywood has created its own little community between the staff and their customers. With the majority of employees having been at the location for
over 10 years, customers are guaranteed to see familiar faces trained to handle a variety of requests and share their expertise of the showroom. Assistant manager, Gary Sauser has been with the company for 18 years and comments: “People know who they are dealing with when they come here”.

Reflecting on what kind of shopping experience customers can expect, Al describes his store as “a relaxed, nonintimidating atmosphere. Good advice and friendly service is what I like myself when I shop—and we’ll provide no less than that to our customers.” Windsor offers a variety of specialized products to finish and renovate homes. Located on Millar Avenue, the store’s showroom is well worth the visit for anyone considering doing some home improvement projects or gathering ideas for updates and renovations.
A common misconception debunked Windsor Plywood sells more than just, well—plywood. Expect to find doors (both exterior and interior), exotic and traditional hardwood flooring, custom mouldings, plywood, decking and lumber. First quality products at highly competitive prices are possible with the buying power of over sixty Windsor Plywood locations in North America. It is a one stop shop for those looking to renovate or finish their homes with caring sales staff offering a
great selection of options that may not otherwise be considered.
Creative entertainment options With the rise of flatscreen televisions and wall mounts in homes, traditional entertainment units are no longer in high demand. Windsor offers beautiful unique mantles to help decorate under wall mounted televisions and complement any type of fireplace. Whether it is for your ‘man cave’ in the basement, your cabin at the lake or simply in your living room, custom pieces in your choice of wood can be supplied to suit and fit your space.
Gallery of doors The front door of your home makes a statement and should be carefully considered. Windsor Plywood’s showroom offers a unique way to conceptualize doors based on the design, glass and material it is made of. When you enter the store’s gallery of doors, you are able to see how the aesthetic looks from both the inside and outside of your home. Gauge the level of privacy with different shapes, sizes and thickness of glass along
with variance in transparency. “New patterns and styles can easily change the exterior of your home and freshen it up,” says Arlene Olson while also noting the increased popularity of fibreglass given its durability and ability to adapt to the harsh Saskatchewan climate preventing door jamming and unnecessary cool air leakage with temperature fluctuations. The majority of Windsor Plywood’s doors are environmentally built to be environment friendly and promote energy efficiency. For those do-it-yourself homeowners that need some extra help Al notes: “We also offer a complete door shop service that includes prehanging, drilling and mortising for hinges and door knobs, installing peep holes and decorative glass lights in exterior doors.”
Exotic woods, the new craze Interior decorators and savvy home renovators are embracing some distinctive new exotic woods. From South Africa to Old World, “when it comes to wood flooring, it is unlikely that you will find a more complete selection than at Windsor,” remarks Al. From European

With options to fit any budget and lifestyle, employees make sure to find the right fit for customers’ unique needs. Considering design elements, colours and textures of various woods can set the mood of any room and space. Areas and signature pieces in the home previously absent of natural and exotic woods are becoming increasingly popular such as kitchen islands and custom kitchen tables, creating a unique feature to complement its surrounds.
Mouldings Mouldings or architectural details accentuate a room’s presence and help define its style. Both designers and homeowners alike are rediscovering the advantages moulding can offer in various rooms. Windsor offers expertise to those who wish to plan and create their own custom mouldings for their home. Helping a room come together in the final stages, mouldings are becoming increasingly popular to offer that finished touch of style and elegance.
Speciality woods It is impossible not to have plywood come to mind when initially hearing the name of the store, but despite that first impression, unusual woods have been scouted by local specialists. Local woodworkers have discovered the variety of speciality wood options to help accommodate their hobbies and needs. Regular customers include guitar makers, woodworking instructors, hobbyists, and the woodworker’s guild members.
Going the extra mile Personalized service has been the platform for success at Windsor Plywood. The employees are well informed and are rarely heard saying “we don’t carry that.” The team goes the extra mile to order in any special requests they can

accommodate or send customers to the right place. Gary also mentions that one of the requirements for working at the store is: “Are you willing to have some fun with you co-workers and customers?” He feels that your home is a big investment and it is important to make customers feel like they can shop worry-free with the help of friendly, educated staff. Under the excellent guidance of store manager David Hilash, the Windsor Plywood staff members are enthusiastic and passionate about their jobs. With employees motivated to satisfy the needs of customers, the store has grown to have a strong reputation in the community.

Homes Expert Advice on Custom Garages
After months of being cooped up in our houses away from the ice and snow, we can finally see the grass and get by without wearing a down-filled jacket, which means two things: summer has finally made an appearance in Saskatoon and the surrounding areas; and, more importantly, it’s time to start enjoying being outside in the beautiful weather. For some, it means breaking out the patio furniture and for others, it means opening that garage door and whiling away the days or evenings with a project, your family and the sounds of summer by your side. Unfortunately, the random things you stored in your garage over winter because everything was too cold and snow-covered to put them away in their proper places have somehow multiplied and overtaken your garage, leaving you with a pile of stuff and no space to work or spend time with your family.

The first step to taking back your garage and transforming it into an operational and recreational space is clean-up and organization. Whether you want a full garage makeover complete with flooring, storage cabinets and racks or just to keep the dust down and prevent stains by refinishing the concrete with Polyaspartic flooring, we’ll hook you up with everything you need to turn your space into a multifunctional room where you can spend quality time with your family throughout the summer months and the rest of the year.
Turning your garage into a three-season room is easier than ever with this season’s new and innovative product from Breezy Living Screen Solutions. We’re very excited to help people create the ultimate outdoor space with this one-piece screen door for the garage. The system is the perfect solution for things that would normally force you inside the house, like dropping temperatures in the evening or annoying bugs buzzing around you or your little ones once the sun goes down. The system’s genius design requires no manipulation of the existing overhead garage door and makes it completely independent—when the door goes up, there are two small straps you pull to bring down the screen door, giving you an enclosed space with a retractable person door that allows you to move in and out of the garage without letting bugs in. Because it’s fairly light, nearly anyone can pull the screen system down, even a child who’s tall enough to reach. Breezy Living Screen Solutions are available in a many sizes, from 8’ x 7’ up to 18’ x 7’ or 8’ x 8’ up to 18’ x 8’ and are perfect for Saskatchewan’s climate and anyone’s schedule or budget. After a minimal investment and just three hours’ installation, you’re ready to tinker in the garage with the evening sunlight streaming in or sit with your family and enjoy the fresh air and sounds of our summer evenings without the hassle of nature’s little pests. While it’s guaranteed to keep the bugs out, we can’t make any promises about the neighbours!FHS

A self-described “paint boutique,” Blended Jive holds exclusive access to PARA Paints, a Canadian manufacturer that recently launched over 2,000 fabulous colours, as well as, a colour palette collection chosen by internationally renowned designer Sarah Richardson. Having recently celebrated Blended Jive Paint & Décor’s second anniversary, Brandy and Joline are looking forward to a busy 2011 summer season. Mixing it up with a selection of works by local metal and canvas artists lined up against stunning home décor items, the driving forces behind Blended Jive focus on staying fresh, modern and on the cutting edge of the interior design industry. “We are so excited to announce that we are the new local supplier of Shade-OMatic window coverings,” says Joline. “We place custom orders in a range of styles and colours to fit your windows with a flawless edge and finish.” Infusing the world around them with vivid hues and shades, Brandy eloquently summarizes Blended Jive’s classic mantra. “What would the world be if there was no colour?” FHS “I’ve recommend Blended Jive Paint & Décor to every single one of my clients for just less than two years, because the owners Brandy and Joline follow the same rules in business as I do; service and product! Great service and a fantastic product, what more can you ask for from a business!” ~Chantelle Butterfield Funktional Space

IMPROVING YOUR SOIL SO YOU HAVE GUMBO – HARDLY A VALID EXCUSE!
WITH KEN BEATTIE
C
’mon folks, is it not a rule that the better a gardener you are the worse the soil that is bestowed on you? For what it is worth, it sure seems so! Having lived in Saskatchewan for more than two decades, I became more than familiar with the native “soil.” Yes, I
do use the term loosely as soil has the connotation that it is actually usable for plants to grow in. Gumbo, well, not so good. On a positive note, gumbo makes some of the best pottery in Canada. Actually, when you really think about it
and distill all the information that you read, hear and acquire, success in the garden all boils down to the soil that you have. A very long time ago an excellent gardener told me to put my time, effort and money into my soil, the rest will just happen. As it turns out, after
FineHomes SASKATOON

more than four decades of trial and error, that person was totally accurate. So then, I am sharing that same wisdom with you now. There are really no quick fixes, immediate or overnight cures for lousy soil. It takes time, much like dieting. Sure, I guess that you can lose a number of kilos overnight or within a given period of time if you subscribe to the fads that are current; soils are the same. There is no shortage of “remarkable remedies” for poor, unproductive soils. Some are liquid additives, some more in the line of powders or secret blends under various labels as obscure as the listed ingredients. Truth is, heavy Saskatchewan clay gumbo can be tamed and actually present itself as an excellent growing medium without a lot of fuss and muss. Sand is not our friend. Consider what concrete is composed of… sand and cement. The clay soils of Saskatchewan are akin to cement. Adding sand to gumbo makes great pottery and lousy growing soil. The reason for this is that sand doesn’t hold the tiny clay soil particles far enough apart from each other, thus limiting the air that is supposed to flow into the soil. For that matter, water has a difficult time travelling through the particles as well. You may have discovered that once your gumbo gets wet, it gets very slippery and actually will heave or expand. Adding sand to this situation just makes it all worse. The trick is to add organic matter and a material that will not clump, clog or squish when it gets wet. What could that be? Kitty litter is the absolute answer. I know, you think that I’m crazy; adding kitty litter to Saskatchewan soil and all! I suppose next he will suggest nonclumping and not previously enjoyed? Absolutely. Just what the doctor ordered. The idea is that kitty litter, or clay that has been baked with heat, actually does not disintegrate and therefore holds the clay particles at a good distance from each other, avoiding the stickiness thing. These spaces provide a channel for air, water and nutrients to travel into the soil. The organic matter that you will add along with the kitty litter provides a host of beneficial organisms to the soil. I prefer to use phyto or plant-based
104
FineHomes SASKATOON
organic matter as opposed to manures. This is simply a personal choice and not any better than any other form really. Compost, of course from your home compost heap, pile or bin is typically excellent to add to a prairie clay soil with kitty litter. The most predictable request when mentioning soil additives is “how much?” and “when to add?” Really, let’s put things into perspective here folks, it is dirt after all. It is neither that precise of a science nor astrologically-associated, it is simple common sense. Your heavy clay soil will require enough kitty litter to allow water to drain away in a reasonable length of time. If you add too much, it will drain faster, not enough the opposite will occur. If you are a numbers kind of person, then consider approximately 1 kg for every 3 square meters to start and amend as you see fit depending on how poorly your clay drains. Compost, organic matter or whatever your term for the “good stuff” can never be overdone. Most gardeners never have enough organic matter, often turning to the dark side of gardening and “borrowing” leaves, pilfering vegetative detritus and the like from neighboring yards to appease their addiction to good soil. If you make your own compost, kudos to
you for sure; add as much as you can and add it often to your Saskatchewan clay. So many gardeners or rather gardener helpers (husbands generally) are of the mind that adding compost once is enough. Not annually mind you, once… often overheard rejoicing at the garden center that “oh ya, I did that last year.” Do not succumb to such folklore; in good old SK this is at the very least an annual chore. Understanding now that the nutrient value of a Saskatchewan gumbo is rather high, the trick to making it available for the plants relies on the additions that you make. Sure, it is very simple to add inorganic and/or organic fertilizers, and for certain they do achieve a result. Overall however, the most cost-efficient and long-term benefit for your soil is to add what has been suggested. Naturally, you may subscribe to adding fertilizers as additional amendments, and that is a good thing. The season is short enough and, let’s face it, we want the most out of gardens for the season. Just a word of caution, however, improved soil conditions will require more water than you may be used to applying. Take care and monitor the needs of your plants or perhaps, if reason-
able, consider mulching your newly invigorated soil to conserve moisture and cut down on your maintenance. An additional hint for cooler, prairie soils is an annual addition of a mycorhizal bacterium usually sold under the trade name of MYKE. These microscopic “good guys” will increase your soil’s viability and nutrient availability remarkably. Keep in mind they must be added annually to your prairie soils. So there you go, a summer’s full of good things to feed your soil with. Please, by all means remember, the kitty litter must not be previously enjoyed. Happy gardening and enjoy the season. Ken Beattie, affectionately known as Canada’s Favourite Gardener, is a graduate of the prestigious Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture and is currently Director of Horticulture for Assiniboine Park, one of North America’s largest urban parks, in Winnipeg. alking into Early’s entrance and display area is a breath of Spring. Henri Studio water fountains provide a soothing soundtrack to the displays of new items for the outdoor garden season. Interest in home décor and growing dates back a century with this 104-year-old family business. The Early family moved from Ireland to Canada in the 1840s. They settled in Ontario and, in 1905, two cousins traveled to homestead in Elstow. Then, one cousin, Spencer Abner (S.A.), moved into Saskatoon to start a hay, grain and feed store. In 1914, he bought a half-acre of land on Idylwyld Drive, and built a new grain elevator and a feed store, both of which opened in 1917 and stood as Saskatoon landmarks until 1983 when they were torn down. He built a second elevator in 1928, which allowed him to expand into the livestock feed manufacturing and seed grain cleaning business, and then into the garden seed packet trade. S.A. Early & Co. published its first spring catalogue in 1942. Over its first century, Early’s has become a major Western Canadian retailer of feed, seed, pet and garden products that prides itself in staying at the forefront of new ideas and products in all areas of a very diversified business. ”My grandfather would still recognize some of the ‘heritage’ seed varieties and bags of feed oats that we still sell,” says grandson and current owner Spencer Early. There are two Early’s Farm & Garden stores—one on 51st Street and the main store on Lorne Avenue. Customers come from around the province (see sidebar for information on Lorne roadwork and getting to the Lorne Avenue Early’s store).
BACK TO NATURE It’s Spring—time for gardeners to do their thing, and Early’s is a great choice for one-stop garden shopping. “We’re very diversified,” Spencer says about the spring and summer offerings. “We have a wide range of products for urban, rural and commercial landscaping and gardening needs. We have a whole page in our new catalogue just of new flower and vegetable seeds for the garden this year.” Spencer says that they saw a shift years
108
FineHomes SASKATOON
ago toward growing more flowers, but it’s moving back toward an emphasis on planting things that end up on the dinner table. “There’s a real movement in locally grown food,” Spencer says. “People want to know the source of their food, and more and more are deciding to grow a lot of their own produce.”
THE WHOLE PACKAGE What makes Early’s special is the combination of unique products, superior service and competitive pricing. “Our staff is very knowledgeable about all our products and can really advise you so that you make the right decisions and end up happy with the end results,” Spencer says.
Every year seems to bring lenges to a successful
chalcrop.
Remember what happened to your garden last year? Excessive rain caused late blight on tomatoes and potatoes resulting in an early demise of thousands of area urban and rural garden crops. Early’s is responding, Spencer says. “Look for more disease resistant varieties and new, natural products to deal with fungus, insects and weeds. An example is Serenade Garden, a new biofungicide that attacks harmful diseases and can be used in organic gardening.
Spencer says Garden Department Manager Vicky Berg has been “aggressive in sourcing out new flower and vegetable varieties which she has actually grown and knows how well they do. We actually listen to our customers who are looking for unique things, and that helps to make us a good source for finding exclusive and interesting garden products and décor items.” Case in point: the new Rail Rockit!. “Early’s is the first retailer in Canada to sell them,” Spencer says. “They hold pots, planters, birdfeeders, shelving and even pet dishes. You can attach them to your deck with no tools, and move them easily with no damage, making them great for renters too.” Bird feeding is one of the most popular activities in North America and Spencer says they are seeing more people feed the birds throughout the year. “We have a good relationship with Sun Country, a successful blender of bird seed in Langham who found the Rail Rockit. They’re always surprising us with new bird feeders and bird houses, many of which are made with zero-maintenance recycled material,” Spencer says. “It fits well with our ‘buy local’ philosophy which has served us well for over 100 years.”
course accessories. Early’s also supplies the livestock industry with feed and veterinary supplies for horses, cattle, goats and chickens as well as many other “specialty” animals. There’s even an entire section of the store for the horse enthusiast, featuring tack and specialty supplements. Customers love the ‘General Store’ feeling they get in both Early’s stores. “People often reminisce about being in our old feed mill on Idylwyld Drive with their parents or grandparents,” Spencer says. “We like to think we have one foot in the past and one foot in the future while providing what customers are looking for today,” he jokes.
GETTING TO EARLYS Due to recent Lorne Avenue road work and related signage, Spencer says a perception has been created that it’s difficult to get to Earlys, or there are closed roads. This is NOT true, he emphasizes. “The signage is unfortunate, because it makes it look as though roads are closed,” he

of driving past the store every day when they are commuting. So don’t let the signage confuse you—Early’s is accessible and open for business!
Early’s stores welcome pets, and the fourfooted family members love visiting the friendly Early’s staff. “Our furry customers literally drag their owners into the store because of how well our staff treats them,” says one of the managers, Derek Bloski. “Their owners tell us their pets know they’re coming here when they’re still blocks away.” Both stores have an excellent selection of the most popular quality pet food and supplies, like Horizon, made in Rosthern. It’s the only pet food made in Saskatchewan, and Early’s was the first to carry it. Spencer says people like buying local when possible, and Horizon is good quality and value-priced. Early’s specializes in grass seed for turf as well as hay and pasture mixes. They can advise customers and are able to custom mix right on site. Early’s supplies many of the provinces golf courses with professional fertilizer, turf care products and golf

The stores are chock full of amazing stuff like designer air purifiers, traditional French cookware, fun and funky popsicle and ice trays, green pans and table top barbecues that will make the perfect gifts this spring and summer. Since the first store opened its doors in 2000, Bernadette Gaudet, an extremely dedicated and passionate employee has graced its colourful aisles. “Spring and summer are my favourite time of year with a never-ending flow of innovative and beautifully designed finds that make the perfect gifts,” she enthuses. “Giving a gift that people need with a
twist of something they weren’t expecting is the key to a thoughtful present. People have different tastes, so unless you know them extremely well the smart thing to do is select presents that are practical, but still beautifully and thoughtfully-crafted. In essence, a gift from Peppers is one that will last a lifetime and be cherished by generations to come.” Here are some gift ideas that are sure to inspire (and even delight) people with the most discerning of tastes: SCENT AND SENSIBILITY Lampe Berger is a diffuser system that creates a beautiful scent using fragrances while also acting as an air purifier. The lamp uses a Catalytic Combustion System invented by Maurice Berger in 1900. The oils come in lovely aromatic mixes like Summer Rain and Under the Fig Tree and the lampes them-
selves are beautiful objets d’art that can also be displayed proudly in the home. GO GREEN Green ideas might include products made of non-toxic materials like the Henckels GreenPan, which uses state of the art technology to produce beautifully crafted non-stick pots and pans that are high heat resistant and don’t release toxic fumes. Thermolon is a non-stick ceramic coating that is PTFE and PFOA free. GIFT BASKETS There’s nothing better than a basket (or a Bodum Barbecue or Le Creuset Crock Pot) filled with lots of goodies or gadgets. Make a lovely arrangement using a selection of culinary tools like salt and pepper mills, Riedel wine glasses, ice coffee bodums or an array of funky gadgets like Chef’n strawberry stem removers or garlic presses, a Jaccard tenderizer or a very cool “Fire Wire” that is an ingenious, 100 per cent stainless steel, cable-style grilling skewer. LE CREUSET COOKWARE Le Creuset, manufactured in France, has been prized for its handcrafted and signature cast-iron/porcelain design and aluminum core since the 1920s. Ideal for the long, slow cooking of cassoulets and other longbaking stews, its popularity makes sense when you consider its lightweight design, tight-fitting lids and availability in vibrant colours like Flame Orange and Cherry Red. SUMMER LOVIN’, HAPPENED SO FAST Summer is a time for enjoying the great outdoors with picnics and barbecues. This Sawyer’s landscape on Saskatchewan Crescent was nominated for a Canadian Nursery Landscape Award in 2010
Make a statement with a Sawyer’s landscape BY FHS STAFF Even if you don’t yet know the name, you’ve probably seen the work. You were out walking, riding or driving around the Saskatoon area and were struck by a home that stood out from the rest. You gave yourself a moment to let your eyes linger on the robust, perfectly placed and exquisitely manicured trees. You felt the allure of the uniquely designed borders, pathways, planters and grading. You thought: “That’s the kind of first impression I want my yard to make on people.” You promised yourself that, next year, you would join the ranks of those who had already made it a priority to improve the aesthetic appeal and financial value of their properties by creating an exterior to match the pristine order and clean comfort of their homes’ interiors. You didn’t know, at the time, who was
112
FineHomes SASKATOON
responsible for creating the calm, inviting oasis of greenery, but there is a very good chance you were looking at a Sawyer’s landscape.
Why wait? The seed has been sown, but when it comes time to spend that all-important discretionary income, it’s tempting to look at your yard and see just a big expense. Perhaps it’s time to consider that having a healthy, well-maintained property is actually an investment that not only substantially improves property value, but is a pleasure to come home to every day and use for recreation that enhances your overall quality of life. And it doesn’t have to be a huge investment according to Jeremy Thompson, Sawyer’s manager of residential landscape construction services. “Building an eye-catching yet functional front yard
landscape can be done for a relatively modest cost,” he says. Perhaps the hot, new SUV you have your eye on can wait until next year. After all, your already great-looking, four-year-old Grand Cherokee will look even better parked next to your compelling new landscape.
Call in the pros By 1999, Sawyer’s Trees & Landscapes had already established itself as the premier tree maintenance service business in Saskatchewan. But owners Norm and Karen Altrogge saw continuous improvement and diversification as a core value of their company. “We pride ourselves on being innovative and on the leading edge in our industry in Saskatchewan,” says Norm.
Employing professional landscape designers, experienced horticulture technicians, and knowledgeable landscape construction professionals, Sawyer’s has built hundreds of outstanding landscapes throughout Saskatoon and region over the past 12 years. The process starts with what is perhaps the most important step— fact-finding. Sawyer’s provides a toolkit that allows families to pre-establish their needs and preferences. From there, through question-asking, consultation, and solution-providing, Sawyer’s management and design staff provide advice on everything from proper grading for optimal drainage, to the right hardscape materials for endurance and aesthetics, to the most suitable species of trees and shrubs according to growing conditions and your particular lifestyle functions on your property. Once the design is set, and the pricing is agreed upon, Sawyer’s professional crews execute the plan with limited disruption to your household. “We will ensure not only the initial quality of construction— we will build for you a landscape that will thrive for years to come,” says Norm.
Design, Build, MAINTAIN
phases are complete, you don’t have to be on your own when it comes to continuing to enhance the aesthetics of your newly landscaped property. Maybe a helpful program for you is Sawyer’s TLC (Total Landscape Care) program. This is a monthly, allinclusive, four-season maintenance regimen, including everything from total green-space care in spring and summer, to snow removal and ice maintenance in the wintertime. For full details on the services offered with the TLC program, see the sidebar on this page, visit www. sawyers.ca or call for a free estimate. Condominium and commercial/ industrial customers fall in love with this year-round Bundled Service Program. Residential customers are also big fans. Also part and parcel of TLC is Sawyer’s Tree Keepers Program, which is available separately if requested. While the company has diversified to cover a full range of residential and commercial services, it continues to be known as Saskatchewan’s premier tree services business, well-versed in all aspects of arboriculture (the industry term for consultation, care and maintenance of trees in an urban environment).
Mother Nature has a mind of her own. While the rugged appearance of her wilderness landscapes has its own appeal, her unimpeded character is not necessarily suitable for your personal green-space oasis. Trees in an urban environment also face their own unique challenge— particularly with respect to nutrition, disease and insects—and, in Saskatchewan, the climate.
Sawyer’s Tree Keepers program begins with the proper placement of your new trees to ensure adequate access to life-sustaining sunlight, moisture and nutrition. They are staked to grow straight and strong and the roots are protected with the added insulation of a mulch well at the base of the trunk. This insulating mulch protects them from the wild temperature fluctuations of prairie springs and autumns and also provides added nutrition as the mulch breaks down.

into the ground below the thick mat of grass roots, thus supplying nutrients and fertilizer directly to the root system of your valuable trees. This deep root feeding enhances health and vigour, thus allowing your trees to better protect themselves against insects, disease and fungus. “People put fertilizer on top of their lawn, but the grass keeps all that,” says Carlton Larson, an arborist with the Tree Keepers Program. “By injecting underneath the soil we make sure essential root nutrients get where they need to go, to where they are usable by the tree.” But Tree Keepers goes beyond giving your tree a better than fighting chance to get through the first year. Every year thereafter, Sawyer’s will return to repeat the mulching, deep root feeding, and pruning cycle—ensuring your valuable trees’ optimal health and beauty throughout their entire life cycle.
