Winter 2011-2012 VOLUME 1 ISSUE 4 www.finelifestyles.ca

WITH FINE LIFESTYLES EDITOR THOM BARKER

Editor Thom Barker editor@finelifestyles.ca

Associate Editor I never thought I would see the day that I found an interest in interior decorating. And I’m not entirely sure whether it’s because I’m starting to feel settled, or whether editing this magazine for more than a year has unseated some latent design tendency. What I am fairly sure about is that the catalyst was my cousin Cyndi. I had her and her husband over for after-dinner cocktails when Lorraine was out of town. Cyndi, who had never met Lorraine, said she wasn’t convinced I was even married because she didn’t see any “feminine touches” to our apartment’s décor. Now, it’s not so much that the décor was masculine—or as Cyndi put it, “bachelor pad.” It was more that it was just very minimalist (or non-existent). As I mentioned in the last issue of Fine Homes, in which I talked about my drapes-hanging escapade, both Lorraine and I have lived a kind of nomadic existence for most of our adult lives. And, with her working up north, we just hadn’t really got around to our decor. Determined, I faced the dilemma that I believe many people confront: of being a little overwhelmed about where to even start. Then I realized I had a treasure trove of knowledge that I’ve apparently accumulated through osmosis. Thanks to some of our advertisers and columnists, the first thing I recognized was that establishing good decor doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing transformation. It’s amazing what you can do with a plant here, a piece of art there and some strategically-placed candles and knick knacks. I also bought a new set of elegant dishes, which, although not permanently on display, add a definite sense of homeyness when we use them. When Lorraine arrived home, she added a few more little touches—a new set of quality towels for the bathroom and some material to enhance some of our hard surfaces. Next on my agenda is lamps. For me, it was a bit of a revelation to learn how much emphasis designers put on lighting. When I talked to Candice Olson a few issues back, she said it is the most important consideration when decorating. In this issue’s Q&A with Steven and Chris, their number one “do” for home décor is layered lighting. The only problem is, I am starting to see how decorating could become addictive. I find myself absent-mindedly leafing through magazines thinking, “oh, that would go nice there,” and, “I have to have one of those for that empty spot in the dining room.” I guess that’s preferable to being accused of having an imaginary wife.

HAVEN BUILDERS Pride in workmanship and extraordinary customer service are the marks of Haven Builders Photos by Candace Epp

T

he owners of Haven Builders, a Master home building company, want every customer’s experience to be extraordinary. A high quality product is of the utmost importance. Their goal is not to be the biggest builder in Saskatoon but rather one that provides outstanding value, quality and service.

Priding themselves on personalized service, the Haven Builders and Haven Cabinets family will work one-on-one with clients to ensure the end result is truly a dream come true. All sub-trades have been hand picked to ensure Haven’s passion and vision is carried through at every stage of the building process. An

in-house designer is readily available to facilitate the Haven Signature Service Experience. Haven will design and execute a custombuilt home or renovation utilizing their unique, high end cabinetry division. The Coalsdale is Haven’s recently completed

executive signature home and features a variety of upgrades. The Coalsdale is also the perfect place for potential buyers to experience the difference Haven’s custom cabinetry can make in a home.

Haven signature service Haven Builders’ clients are treated to one of the best customer service experiences available in Saskatoon. They realize building a house can be a stressful time and will work with you to ensure that building your dream home is one of the best things you’ll ever do. An important part of the building process is choosing the finishings for the home. Haven’s in-house designer works with each customer to select fixtures, flooring and lighting and other features of the home. This unique service is provided at no extra charge. Other builders send clients off with all finishing allowances but it’s often very difficult and stressful for customers to choose a cohesive finished look on their own. That’s why Haven’s designer organizes shopping days and accompanies clients to various suppliers until the perfect finished look is accomplished. Haven’s building allowances are based on the wholesale prices of the materials 10

and as a result, they do not need to upsell or downsell customers. This creates an atmosphere of trust and total transparency. Another advantage of building through Haven is that customers deal with the owners and managers of the company. This allows for personalized service with the people who are actually building their home. Customer service and satisfaction is foremost for the small, intimate company and each employee is committed to the end result. Clients often find their questions unanswered or lost in the inevitable of larger builders but this is not the case at Haven.

Haven Cabinets The focal point of any home is the kitchen and it’s also the area where families and guests spend most of their time. Sub-par cabinetry reflects on the rest of the home but a quality product speaks volumes. The owners of Haven Builders could not find a cabinetry supplier willing to provide the quality of cabinets, consistency of finish, and in the turnaround time they required. They wanted their customers to have the best cabinets available and decided to start their own custom in house cabinetry business, Haven Cabinets.

Utilizing Haven Cabinets is one of the privileges of building a home through Haven. Haven Cabinets are available exclusively to people building or renovating a home through Haven Builders and are not sold to other builders or outside clients. A unique benefit of having a custom cabinetry business at one’s disposal is the ability to create new ideas and designs together with the client to enhance the home. Intricate or innovative designs may be difficult to achieve with regular cabinetry allowances through other builders. Haven Cabinets are competitively priced and are manufactured on-site using high end equipment. Haven Builders truly believe in taking pride in the quality of their workmanship. All carpentry, installation and finishing work on Haven houses is done by their in-house team of professionals who take pride in their work. Haven believes that it doesn’t cost more to do a job right, it only takes pride in workmanship.

At 12,000 square feet, the Coalsdale is situated on one of the largest lots in Evergreen with views of natural prairie vistas that are not slated for future development. The home is completely developed and includes a double attached garage with custom built doors. Drive through to an enormous backyard that could easily welcome a future pool, workshop or sport court. Featuring a fully finished basement with a TV and theatre area, the walls all use R20 insulation. The Coalsdale’s insulation and appliances meet Energy Star standards. The heating, cooling and hot water systems all utilized highly efficient Energy Star appliances. The inline water heater ensures constant and instant hot water, along with convenience.

cooling, and lighting.

A unique and highly functional center island was designed for families and entertaining. Large pillars at each corner give this focal point a distinct look while allowing numerous people to congregate on all sides. The Coalsdale’s hand railing has a unique connection to the rest of the home, as it has been custom finished on site and stained to match the cabinets exactly.

Located near the main entrance is a den or office space illuminated by large windows. Haven’s custom cabinets extend throughout the house and the main floor bathroom is no exception. Custom floating shelves are ideal for displaying art work or sculptures. Unique custom solid core doors, some with glass panels or geometric designs have been used throughout the house; there are no bi-fold closet doors in the Coalsdale. All doors match but have different features. The theme of the house even transcends to the outside, as the double garage doors match the inside doors.

Durable, high end Hickory flooring is used throughout the main living area, providing a timeless feature that matches a wide range of furniture and cabinetry. A walkout deck off the main living area comes fully finished and ready to use, while a modern gas fireplace warms the room. A significant audio/video system comes installed and prewired for eight zones throughout the house. A touch panel in the main living area controls the system, along with remotes from anywhere in the house. TVs can be added to the system and it can also be used to control heating,

A fine piece of custom cabinetry is situated at the garage entrance. Designed with families in mind, the multi-purpose coat rack and storage unit includes benches, drawers and hangers.

Oversized ceramic tiles line the inviting front entry, while rarely seen radius paving stones line the outside steps and entrance to the Coalsdale. The arched stone entryway is reminiscent of an Italian villa and the house is finished in long-wearing acrylic stucco.

Second floor Two spacious bedrooms both with near walk-in closets are divided by a large hallway closet. Second floor laundry with a shelving and storage area makes daily chores easier than ever. The second floor bathroom was designed with families in mind and features an inner door separating the bath and toilet area from the sink. Perhaps the Coalsdale’s most impressive feature is the massive master bedroom area. Equipped with a large sitting area, bay windows invite a chaise lounge or nesting chair, and offer the perfect escape from a busy day. A two-way fireplace warms both the bedroom and spainspired ensuite bathroom. The bathroom consists of a glass surround shower, large tub and gleaming white, high gloss cabinets and vanity housing double sinks. The gleaming custom cabinets match those in the modern, yet glamorous dressing room, where every woman is sure to instantly feel like a celebrity. Floating shelves and suspended cabinetry line the wall, while large windows let in an abundance of natural light. A center island comprises a multitude of drawers and is ideal for displaying fresh-cut flowers. FHS

HAVEN MANAGEMENT TEAM L to R: Tyler Franson, Dallas Stobbe, Donna Senterre, Nathan Stobbe, Tim Baerwald

Introduced to the world as the Designer Guys before moving on to Design Rivals then So Chic, Canadian television sensations Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman have hosted a decade’s-worth of television that’s reached a fan following in more than 80 countries. In the midst of their unstoppable ascent to stardom—an achievement fuelled by wit, personality and, of course, talent— in 2003 the openly-gay, long-time couple found time to co-pen the bestselling how-to book, Designer guys: Finding your Personal Style. The title best exemplifies their approach to design: to shun fleeting fashion trends and help others “be their own trend.” It’s a theme they’ve carried into their latest program on CBC television, Steven and Chris. The title is as neat and concise as their definition of good taste: timeless and classic.

Steven and Chris Timeless, classic and a little off the wall By Quinn Bender

Steven and Chris meet with fans following the taping of their show at the CBC studios.

You pack a lot of variety into your shows, to the point where one is left wondering how you can be experts on so many things. Where do you mine the topics for your show? Chris: We’re actually not experts on anything but the home decor. We’re just like all the other talk shows in North America; we bring on guests who are the experts. When it comes to cooking, we’re the hosts who bring in our experts. When it comes to fashion, beauty, makeup, fitness—we’re definitely not experts with fitness—we bring in our experts. Steven: I like to branch out... I’ll do a small cooking segment with food I’ve made myself, but by no means am I a chef. I just enjoy cooking, so I bring that to the table.

So you use the show to explore your personal interests? Steven: That’s the nice thing about it. We can bring something to the table just by saying, “I’ve always wanted to try this....” I love cake decorating—I know that sounds weird—but I keep pitching all these cake decorating segments because I personally want to learn how to work with fondant.

Chris: But no one has agreed to that yet [laughter]. Steven: No, I know! But I’m still working on it. I love everything about cooking. Someday down the road, would I want to be a chef? Absolutely! That’s what’s so great about the show, is I get to learn all these tips and tricks and have great chefs on constantly. Chris: We’re learning so much from the show now, I think we, and everybody at home, are becoming a little more expert on things. I’m feeling smarter every day. Steven: Hmmm [laughs]. Chris: I use the word “smart” very loosely.

Why do you enjoy DIY so much, Steven—I assume not because it’s trendy. Chris: I’m going to answer this one. I remember when Steven and I were young; we watched a lot of Martha Stewart. Steven said, “I would love to do something like that.” He was very handy, very creative and crafty. Well, lo and behold he became a guest on Marilyn Denis’ show, CityLine, and he became an overnight success. I think people really enjoy mak-

ing things themselves—I don’t understand it at all. I don’t get it! But, man, has he got a following. Steven: I grew into this because there was a time when I would go to the stores and see nice things, but I couldn’t afford them. So I made them. I think it’s really cool to see something you like, and then make it for yourself. Chris: Personally, I just like to go in and buy it. Cash out of my pocket: it’s mine!

Now, Chris, you’re something of an aromatherapy connoisseur. Tell me more about that, why you feel it’s important to engage all the senses in home decor. Chris: How did you know that? My mother lives in Moose Jaw—are you going for coffee with my mother? But yes, I’m obsessed with scents. I love them... sometimes I need something to help me go to sleep, or to calm me down, because I’m pretty hyper—I don’t know if you’ve noticed that. It’s also something to perk you up. My mom and I are both insane for it. She goes to a company in Moose Jaw— shoot, I can’t remember the name—that send us the most beautiful scents—we’ll FineHomes SASKATOON

15

talk about it on the phone for hours. Steven: The company is called Willow Tree. They have the most amazing fragrances.

What’s the most practical approach to fragrance, for someone who doesn’t know much about it? Steven: It’s so easy to go overboard with manufactured smells that are so potent and over the top. But if you go for the natural approach, it’s less offensive, with things like vanilla and lavender—real aromas instead of things like potpourri with cinnamon. Come on, that doesn’t even make sense. Chris: Pure oils are the best. But I won’t invite people over and then put out my favourite fragrance, because people have their own tastes, they have allergies, or they just think it stinks. So limit scents to the powder room, because—well, I think you know what I’m saying. Other than that, leave it to fresh flowers. That can be a great way to add some subtle scents. Keep it natural. Less is more.

Rather than following fleeting trends, the Steven and Chris product line features classic and timeless themes.

What do you think will be the hottest trends for 2012? Chris: We’re the wrong people to ask that, because we don’t follow trends. We have a product line but we don’t put a trend in it. Everything is a classic that we expect you to be able to buy one, 10, 20 years from now. We love it when the experts come on our show and show us what the trends are, but we’re not going to force them on anybody, because you know what? You are your own trend. I really respect that. But where then do you get your creative inspiration, both for your product line and the home aesthetic you promote on the show?

Engage all the senses in home decor with subtle fragrances of naturally-scented candles and oils.

tassel craze, putting tassels on our sofas. Even our colour pallet is very safe. You see a lot of furniture out there that’s bright red, but we will never be the bright-redsofa-people.

Who then inspired each of you to get into this line of work?

tha Stewart! I absolutely adore Rosie O’Donnell... I think she’s one of the most honest, real women on TV, Martha Stewart was one of the hardest-working. I hope that I’m bringing a little Rosie to our show, and Steven is representing Martha.

Steven, how do you feel about that? Steven: I’ll agree on that one [laughs].

Steven: We want it to stand the test of time, because when people invest in furniture, it’s expensive. You can be a little trendy with decor items, that’s fine, but for us we don’t like anything that’s fussy. You’re not going to see us suddenly on a 16

FineHomes SASKATOON

Chris: [To Steven] Martha Stewart? Steven: Yeah, she was pretty much the only one who—

Winter is here. What can people do to warm up the interior feel of their homes?

Chris: Oh! Rosie O’Donell and Mar-

Steven: Get and electric blanket [laughs].

Chris: I can’t live without an electric blanket, I’m always cold. It’s my favourite thing in the entire world. Steven: Seriously, deeper colours. People are sometimes afraid to go rich on the wall. Go for chocolate browns, deep reds. That will envelope your space, definitely cozy up any room.

How about Christmas decor? Is it about tasteful decorations, or are we talking about neon Santas and 10-foot-tall candy canes? Chris: I’m sorry, but when I was a kid, these are the houses I would want to live in: too many decorations on the lawn and way too many decorations on the walls. You know the candy will be good in homes like that. But now, I do allow myself to be a little more tasteful, a little more subdued. But when I go to someone else’s house I do enjoy a mighty tacky decoration. Steven: [to Chris] You really like that home-spun nostalgia, though, don’t you? Chris: I do. I really do. I want to live in a movie. I want to live in A Christmas Story.

Chris’s favourite store for aromatic products is the Willow Tree in Moose Jaw.

It sounds like you both love the Christmas season. Do you have a favourite movie? Steven: I don’t think I do. Chris: You do too! You love A Charlie Brown Christmas. Come on! Steven: Oh, okay, yes I do. I have the CDs and I play them over and over and over. Chris: As soon as that movie comes on he goes and gets the biggest glass of wine you’ll ever see. He’s looped by the end of it [laughter]. FLEW

STeven and ChriS home decor Dos and Don’ts Do Layered Lighting: A lot of people don’t think about light in their home decor scheme. Consider pot lights, chandeliers, sconces, small lamps on surfaces and picture lights on art. If you put everything on dimmer switches your’re going to create a very dramatic effect. A lot of people will install a chandelier in the dining room and leave it at that, but all you’re doing is illuminating the table, or it’s so bright the whole room is washed out. You want to create pools of light. And keep the lighting low; you don’t want guests to feel like they’re in a tanning bed. Personal Touches: Display objects from your travels that reflect you. No one wants to live in a showroom that’s devoid of personality. We travel to Southeast Asia a lot and have some fantastic artefacts. They’re all over the house because they reflect personality—who we are. Something Living: Do put out fresh flowers whenever you can, and if not, display something living, like a large pretty house plant as a point of focus and small potted plants placed throughout the home. Fresh herbs, growing in pots on the kitchen counter are always a hit. A single orchid in the entry way goes a long way.

18

FineHomes SASKATOON

Don’t Don’t listen to your neighbour: When you’re picking out paint colours or wall paper patterns neighbours will almost always pipe in and offer their opinion. They don’t live there, so don’t listen to them. The house is a reflection of the owner and their family. If Mary the neighbour doesn’t like apple green in the kitchen, she shouldn’t come over. Don’t forget the function of a space: Rooms can be arranged and tidied to the point of pristine flawlessness, while we forget its purpose might be to receive friends and guests. A home is to live in, to be enjoyed. A dining room is to eat in, not just to hold ultra-formal dinner parties where no one is allowed to spill a little wine. Never use small area rugs: In a living room scenario, don’t lay down a rug to accommodate only the coffee table. Find one large enough that spills beyond the sofa and chairs. Despite popular belief that a large area rug will make a space look smaller, it will, in fact, make the room look much larger.

inter is upon us and for many that means bundling up, and staying inside –escaping the minus degrees for the comfort of indoors. But that is not the case for all. Those who have invested in a hot tub from Arctic Spas are still slipping into their bathing suits, relaxing in the warm water and soothing jets in a spa-like experience. There’s no need to envy your neighbours who are still hosting hot tub soirees with friends and family on the weekends. Chuck Walker, owner and operator of Arctic Spas in Saskatoon, insists it is not

too late to relax in the comforts of your own hot tub. “People think just because there is snow on the ground we can’t deliver a hot tub, and that’s just not the case,” he says. Easy to install, all that is needed is some open space and a water hose. Within hours of arrival – you can turn your cold winter into a warm and cozy experience with a new backyard hot tub.

New Location The big announcement from Arctic

Spas Saskatoon is they are once again changing locations. This is certainly not new for Chuck Walker and his team, having changed locations 2 times since 2005 to accommodate their growing customer base and inventory. Known for their cutting edge design and high quality products, Arctic Spas has become the place to shop for outdoor leisure products and furniture. Their newest location will offer them almost twice the space, which will better suit their need for an expanded indoor show room, outdoor display, loading area, parking for FineHomes SASKATOON

customers and more storage space for stock to ensure same day delivery for their customers. Not venturing too far from their latest location on Millar Avenue, customers will find this one stop in the heart of the North Industrial area in Saskatoon. The main reason for the change in location was of course customer driven. With an increase in floor models in the showroom, as well as more outdoor space to showcase many of the high-end patio furniture sets and gazebo models, customers can easily find exactly what they are looking for to build their own backyard sanctuary. Arctic Spas will have more options in the makes and models of their own branded products, as well as from the popular Summerset Outdoor Living Collection. Customers can purchase and take home their favourite hot tubs, saunas, steam showers, massage chairs, patio sets, outdoor kitchens and gazebos. Many people custom order product to their specifications and liking. Chuck and his team invite you to stop in at the new location to see firsthand the new products available, and to keep your ears open for the announcement of the store’s grand opening customer soiree.

sync it Technology adds a level of convenience and entertainment when controlling your Arctic Spas hot tub, sauna, or steam shower. Download the Arctic Spa app on your iphone to stream your favourite tunes while relaxing alone, or while entertaining your friends and family. Control hot tub settings with blue tooth technology. Customise your jet settings, light display and music all within one control panel on your phone – it doesn’t get easier than that. Lean back in your massage chair as it massages you to the beat of your favourite tunes. The speed and pressure adjusts to the classical or instrumental notes. These top of the line massage chairs truly work magic in making you forget your daily stresses.

New to arctic spa In addition to the new location, the New Year also brings a new product to Arctic Spas. Fibreglass one-piece swimming pools will be the latest edition to the product line at the outdoor leisure store. Dedicated to the best quality products, Chuck insists Saskatoonians will not find a better pool system or quicker installation process anywhere else. The branded San Juan swimming pools are award-winning ground pools with notable concepts and designs. Available in a variety of sizes, they are also customizable to suit the size and need of the homeowner. Those concerned with the set up will be happy to know the installation process is quick and easy. Within three days customers will be enjoying their in ground-backyard pool with all accessories and necessities readily available to fully enjoy the outdoor water experience. Options for pools include a variety of dimensions, fibre optic lighting, heaters, spa jet systems, automatic safety covers, built-in seats, walk-in options, levels of elevation and other customizable features. Customers can control jets, temperature, lights and automatic covers via remote control systems set up specifically for your pool system, allowing for ease of use and safety. Chuck is excited to offer this newest line to his customers, and encourages those interested in setting up an outdoor pool to learn more about the product at Arctic Spas. Escape the freezing temperatures and relax in your very own hot tub this winter, or to learn more about the many other products available stop by the new Arctic Spas location or check them out online. CusTom Homes with Professional Customer service uilding your home is a personal experience. From start to finish, the layout, design, functionality and style needs to match your family and fit your everyday life. There is much to think about when writing the list of must-haves for your new build that will make all the difference in convenience and efficiency for you and your family. No one understands this better than Brad Redekopp of Cherry Creek Homes. Building custom and spec homes to fit the needs of busy families is what he does. As a small building company, he always takes the lead role in all aspects of the process from house design, 22

sales, supervising trades and keeping a watchful eye on the budget. With word of mouth as his primary marketing tool, Brad has a reputation of outstanding customer service and for keeping his customers happy—so much so that they unknowingly are his best sales team. “I build houses that I would like to live in,” says Brad. Upgraded finishes and beautiful styling is the norm for a Cherry Creek House. Brad spent 19 years working as an accountant and controller for a $100 million company managing large capital budgets and keeping a close eye on cash

flow. These professional skills come in handy when keeping a construction project on time and on budget. The owner-operator is not only meticulous about the design details and layouts but his business background helps his customers ensure they get what they want at a price they can afford.

A Trusted Builder Customers of Cherry Creek Homes typically choose to build with the company because they know Brad and his team of trusted tradespeople will build them a great space in which their

family can grow comfortably. Most clients of Cherry Creek Homes are second- or third-time home owners know what they want, and have specific layout needs to suit their family’s busy life. With Brad’s primary customer base in Warman, the small town resident enjoys building homes for his friends and neighbours—his projects are literally within blocks of his own house. “I stay personally involved in all the building projects, if my customers need anything or have any questions they certainly know where they can find me and I think that is comforting for them,” says Brad. Being personally accountable for all of Cherry Creek Home’s projects is not an issue for this small town builder. Taking pride in a job well done and sharing the credit with his expert tradespeople has been an enjoyable venture for the professional-turned-builder.

Quality Trades Building approximately seven homes a year, Brad knows his capacity and refuses to sacrifice the level of personalized service he offers customers by building more homes. A large part of Cherry Creek’s success can be attributed to the trades people Brad uses for the various building aspects of the interior and exterior of the homes. Cherry Creek Homes has a team of dedicated contractors who provide a level of consistent—high quality work ensuring the finished product is exactly what customers expect.

PR Cabinets Phillip Reiber is one of those trusted tradesman that Cherry Creek Homes brings on for building projects. Specializing in custom cabinet design, Phillip has become a familiar face at all of Cherry Creek Homes’ builds over the past three years he has been in business. Dealing with both Brad and the home owner, Phillip designs and builds custom cabinets, solid surface countertops, wall units, fireplace surrounds – anything you can think of. His expertise lends itself in dealing with all codes, clearances, electrical, switches for appliances and lighting and CAD drawing placement.

Managing customer’s design input, layout and timelines, Phillip invests a lot of energy in ensuring his part of the project is well organized and the finished product is exactly what the customers wanted and expected. With 15 years of mechanical design, the owner of PR cabinets has more than enough experience in CAD 3D models, managing building projects and high quality finished work. With tight tolerances for design and space, Phillip uses CNC (computer numerically controlled) fabrication, essentially eliminating human error and providing the highest quality finished product to the exact specifications of the layout design. With similar goals, a propensity for quality finished work and customer satisfaction Phillip enjoys working for Brad. Commenting on working with Cherry Creek Homes, Phillip says, “Brad is very professional, highly organized, and can manage the big picture— coordinating the trades with timelines ensuring a high quality home that suits the home owner.”

Building as a passion Even as a professional, Brad Redekopp had a strong interest in building homes. At first it was a side venture, but four years ago Brad decided to start Cherry Creek Homes, making building his primary job. Working on residential homes takes up the majority of his time, but he also does commercial projects like tenant improvements. Working directly with designers and architects to ensure commercial codes are properly met, Brad enjoys the different challenges that commercial jobs ensure. Regardless of whom his clients are, Brad and his dedicated trades people ensure all finished projects are proudly stamped with the Cherry Creek Homes quality approval. FHS

Making the process ‘fun’ was an unexpected surprise for Gaylene and her husband Gerald, both insisting that Brad was always two steps ahead. They never had to worry about waiting for tradespeople. n 2009, Douglas Pichler got some news that landowners generally don’t like to hear. The City of Saskatoon was annexing his property east of the city to make room for future expansion.

tall, ranch-style home would take an extraordinary mover to pull off the job. Fortunately for Doug, Neufeld Building Movers out of Warman specializes in extraordinary moves.

Although Doug was paid well for the land by a developer, there was still the matter of the family home. It wasn’t about bricks and mortar. It wasn’t about walls, windows and doors. This is where the Pichlers had raised their kids and celebrated all the important milestones of family life.

Kerry Neufeld, co-owner of the company and an expert third-generation building mover himself, credits his partner Ben Fehr, for an outstanding achievement.

Specializing in extraordinary Doug decided he wanted to move the house and bought it back from the developer for a modest fee. But it would not be an ordinary move. At 3,200 square feet—not including the attached gazebo and imposing front porch—the 33-foot

28

FineHomes SASKATOON

“Ben is as good a building mover as anyone I’ve ever seen; he is amazing,” Kerry said. “This is really another notch in his belt, because it was a very challenging move.” So challenging, in fact, the producers of HGTV’s new reality program Massive Moves sent a crew up to film the process for airing in January. The crew documented the entire move, from the arduous three-day excavation of the home at its original location to the precision

process of settling the 200,000-pound dwelling onto its new foundation. In between, the Neufeld team had to navigate a farmer’s field, direct traffic on a busy highway, uproot and replace road signs, move power lines (with the help of SaskPower) and cut down trees in the ditch by the side of the road. But these are all things the professionals at Neufeld anticipate and plan for. “The gazebo threw us a bit of a curveball, but we knew that going in,” said Ben. “It’s just a matter of putting together all the pieces.” For this move, putting together all the pieces included 41,000 pounds of steel for a total (truck, trailer, platform and house) of 274,000 pounds. Of course, one might imagine that a move

like this could take its toll on a homeowner. “It’s a little more stressful than I thought it would be,” Doug said. “I’ve handled a lot of stressful situations, but this one is getting up there.”

Building Movers Association and Neufeld Building Movers is a member of that organization, as well as, the Alberta Movers Association and the International Association of Structural Movers.

Having the Neufeld team on the job was a huge relief, though. “We’ve got the best mover in the province here,” Doug continued. “I’m really happy with the way they’ve handled it.”

The bottom line

A 60-year legacy For Kerry Neufeld, moving large structures is in his blood. Kerry’s grandfather, Klaus Neufeld, founded the business in 1951. “My grandpa loved any kind of unique business and challenge,” Kerry reminisces.

There are no jobs too small and simple nor too large and complicated for Neufeld Building Movers. If you’re considering moving a building of any kind, or even if you’re just wondering whether something might be possible, the friendly staff at Neufeld will be happy to answer any and all questions or provide you with a free estimate. FHS

Klaus’ son Peter, Kerry’s father, inherited that love for a challenge, as well as the family business and ran it up until 1994 when Kerry took over. Throughout the generations, the company has thrived on the simple business philosophy of delivering quality with professionalism. Kerry is not only passionate about his own business, he is just as committed to his industry as a whole. To that end, he was an integral part of establishing the Western Canadian Association of Structural Movers (WCASM). He also serves as president of the Saskatchewan

he Precedence Mortgage Strategy allows homeowners to shave years off of their mortgages and save thousands of dollars in future interest payments. How is this possible? By taking advantage of existing tax law, working with a certified Mortgage planner, in conjunction with the advice of an experienced financial advisor, homeowners are able to pay down one of life’s biggest expenses and turn it into a long term investment strategy. What does the Precedence Mortgage Strategy do exactly? It is a powerful way to take years off a mortgage and build an investment portfolio at the same time using legal tools from Revenue Canada. You are essentially, slowly converting the equity in your mortgage into a tax deductible loan with a financial strategy. Your monthly payment stays the same as you pay off your mortgage sooner and create wealth for yourself. How long will it take to see the results of using this strategy? The tax benefit is immediate, and the compound effect of this initiative slowly capitalizes on proven financial efficiencies. It is definitely worth comparing this strategy against your current mortgage payback program. Under the Precedence Mortgage Strategy, a 30 year mortgage can be paid in full in as little as 18 years.

Who qualifies under this program? Anyone with 20 per cent equity in their home should be talking to us to see if they can be taking advantage of this strategy. We all work hard for our money and it is our responsibility to ensure that we are utilizing the best resources on the market to get ahead. It may be difficult to start saving personally, but it is not as difficult as you think to get ahead and achieve financial freedom; you just need to be committed to it. Call Tyler Hildebrand today at 306-683-9539 to discuss the possibilities of utilizing the Precedence Mortgage Strategy to pay down your mortgage and invest in your future. FHS

“The mortgage strategy has exceeded our expectations. When I first looked at the program I could see there were benefits, but now after three years, the impact the program has had, in terms of accelerating achievement of our retirement goals, has been remarkable” ~ Ryan & Tracy Krebs

In mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla extract. Add the flour and salt and beat until the dough just comes together. Press onto the

bottom of your greased pans and bake for about 20 minutes, or until pale gold in colour. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack while you make the caramel and choclate layers. Caramel Slowly bring the condensed milk to a boil over mediumlow heat in a heavybottomed saucepan stirring continously until it becomes thick and amber in colour (about 15 minutes). Pour the caramel over the cooked shortbread and spread evenly with a spatula. Cool to room temperature. ChoColate Melt the chocolate and butter in a glass bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water. Pour the melted chocolate mixture evenly over the cooled caramel layer and allow to cool for 10 minutes at room temperature then place in the refrigerator until the chocolate is fully set, but not yet hard. Cut the shortbread into pieces using a sharp knife. Store the shortbread in the refrigerator to keep the chocolate nice and firm or in an airtight container at room temperature for a softer treat.

What’s hot for

2012 By FHS staff

Some people love them. Some people hate them. Some people are indifferent, choosing to create their own. But no matter how you feel about trends, they tend to have a big impact on what is available and how we view our spaces.

Real Estate All indications are that the housing market in Saskatoon will experience moderate growth in the coming year. According to the Royal Bank of Canada’s (RBC) Housing Trends and Affordability report, the real estate market in all segments and by all measures has stabilized from an all-time high in 2009. “Saskatchewan homebuyers seem fairly comfortable with current affordability levels,” the report states. “Indeed, they were quite active in the third quarter (2011), with resales rising nearly [six

per cent] from the second quarter to their highest levels in two years. Hefty gains were seen in Saskatoon and, to a lesser extent, Regina. Home prices in the province maintained their steady ascent, showing modest gains for most housing types. The Saskatchewan housing market will continue to be well supported by strong economic growth in the coming year.” In terms of investment opportunities, Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) reports that throughout Canada multi-

family and mixed-use properties will remain king, particularly condominiums. Builders are opting for condos instead of apartments, giving investors a chance to get in on income-generating real estate. But despite a relatively optimistic outlook, PWC advises caution. “This is not the time to be all in; investors should maintain liquidity, and focus on demand trends,” the report states, advising investors to “concentrate on the few markets showing hiring and FineHomes SASKATOON

45

leasing gains; steer clear of places with compromised long-term growth prospects.” In that regard, the report identifies Saskatoon as a potentially strong market. “The prairie outpost of Saskatoon benefits from oil-patch spillover and a favourable commodity cycle, including flush potash prices… the market could be a development play. It’s a place to watch for the future.”

Interior Design Expect interior design elements to be dominated by Pantone’s 2012 colour palette of bright oranges pinks and purples combined with soft pastels also in the warm range. “Plaid is pretty hot,” says Fine Homes Saskatoon style columnist Meredith Heron. “Preppy Chic—bright colours used against neutral backgrounds. Natural fabrics like linens, wools and cashmere are huge… and personal luxuries; people are investing in their homes.” Of course, the other big trend is in “green” products. Among the more popular of these that promise to be big sellers for 2012 are rapidly renewable and durable cork flooring, LED lighting and Paperstone countertops—a sustainable composite surface made from post-consumer recycled paper and a proprietary non-petroleum resin.

Renovations The renovations market promises to remain strong, also based on the “green” theme. Federal and provincial subsidies for energy-efficient upgrades will remain in effect through 2012 allowing up to $10,000 in rebates. The grants cover a wide array of energysaving measures including: furnaces, central air conditioning, insulation, windows and doors, low-flush toilets, electronic thermostats and more. Also, with housing prices remaining high and a low vacancy rate in Saskatoon,

46

FineHomes SASKATOON

many homeowners are hanging on to their existing properties, opting to do major renovation projects instead of moving. Among the most popular of these are dream kitchens, luxury bathrooms and outdoor kitchens.

Landscaping Speaking of outdoor kitchens, this hot trend of the last couple of years will continue in 2012 according to Fine Homes Saskatoon landscaping columnist Ken Beattie.

“I do see a few things of note for the next year,” Beattie said. “Vertical gardens, as in using space that is atypical for growing plants; heavy use of texture in the landscape/garden with less emphasis on bright colours; using the garden space for more than just gardening, family outdoor use, eating, celebrating and enjoying the outdoors, but not necessarily in a heavily preformed space like a deck.” He also predicts “a return to vegetable growing, however, not necessarily to the traditional varieties or traditional

practices. Smaller sized or mini-veggies, climbing/hanging veggies, integration of veggies and foliage/flowers... not a distinct arena for each. Also, there will be an emphasis on “yes, I did this” and the education of younger family members of where food comes from and at-homeecology lessons.”

Dream Kitchens The buzzword in kitchens is “natural.” Whether in new homes or renovations, consumers are opting for natural surfaces, including stone countertops, glass backsplashes, real wood cabinetry and tile, cork, hardwood and stone flooring. The central island, including cooking surfaces and sinks remains king. In terms of appliances, stainless steel will continue to appeal in 2012. And more and more people, compelled by the “foodie” trend, will opt for professionalgrade appliances, sinks and pantries.

Neighbourhoods The emphasis in neighbourhoods is on greenspace and liveability. New neighbourhoods popping up on the outskirts of the city are generally mixeduse developments that include a mixture of high- and low-density housing, complemented by walkable and rideable park systems, recreational amenities, office space and shopping. It’s a return to the self-sufficient neighbourhoods of old. In the core areas of the city, gentrification of the Broadway area will continue apace as upwardly mobile residents renovate character homes and developers convert other spaces to condos. Also, with the support of the City, the development of River’s Landing and an influx of capital from the private sector, will transform parts of 20th Street with trendy new businesses. Expect the Riversdale area to follow in Broadway’s footsteps. FHS

s winter takes hold, it’s the perfect time to cozy up to the beauty and ambiance of a warm fire, and fantasize about, then plan, your outdoor space for the spring. Go ahead. Dream big and beautiful. If you have watched the home-improvement television shows or browsed the catalogues of high-end products, you know that the possibilities are endless and amazing – but seemingly a world away. The truth is, however, that Titan Designs owners Trevor Trefiak and Chris Richard, aided by their design-savvy wives, Breann Trefiak and Leanne Hardement, have now brought the world of upscale home-living to Saskatoon.

From start to finish, Titan Designs will help you plan and define an unbelievable outdoor living space to suit your budget. Whether you want a pergola, a grill, an outdoor kitchen, a deck, or anything in between, they will help you create an exceptional room suitable to your sense adventure. Their professional designers will help create a design concept specific to your needs Professional contractors and installers, drawn from Titan’s own staff and other local-company partners, will bring your vision to fruition within a reasonable timeline. The unique outcome will make your outdoor room a great room.

Trends for 2012 Titan Designs has a fireplace for every space. Many homeowners still love the traditional log fireplace and the energyefficient gas units, but lately things like glass beads and electricity have taken the fireplace to the level of art. There are models that incorporate sound systems and speakers at surprisingly reasonable prices, and fireplaces that feature bamboo or driftwood in vertical and horizontal frames. Even the placement of the fireplace has moved up the wall in many cases, creating a very special focal piece. Outside, fire pits have taken on the look of huge warming bowls, or they sit in the

centre of dining tables and cocktail bars. Pizza ovens brought from Italy can cook up dinner in less than a minute. High-end barbecues in a full, outdoor kitchen are also becoming more popular—even with our frigid temperatures. Outdoor furniture trends are moving to the sleek and the modular. Titan customers are able to design the configuration of their decks with the furnishings and kitchen placement in mind. Even for the traditionalist, comfortable amenities can be incorporated into any design. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Pergolas of all types have also appeared in the back gardens of Saskatoon. It’s yet another way to show off your individual taste.

Titan Designs: Filling a Niche Chris and Trevor understand Saskatoon’s growing appreciation for high-end fireplaces and unique outdoor rooms. “Saskatoon is booming and more and more people want to enjoy the finer things in life,” Chris says. “They have worked hard for their money, so why not?” Up and running now for the past five months, Titan’s clients include Saboroso Brazilian Steakhouse and Avocado restaurant. For projects big or small, they give all their commercial and individual clients “something you don’t see every day.” Titan Designs also ships worldwide, and were named Best New Exhibitor at HomeStyles 2011, from the Saskatchewan & Region Home Builders Association Inc.

In bringing quality products to Saskatoon, and providing exemplary service, Titan Designs has created truly great rooms (indoor and out) for their clients. European style kitchens seem to have a strong presence on the magazine racks these days. Is this a growing trend or just a fad? North America refers to this trend as ultra modern however Europe would consider it to be the norm. Europe is the global trend setter in fashion, design and technology. This style is not yet dominant in Canada but you should get used to seeing it. There is a new generation of home buyers demanding something fresh and hip. What is the key element that makes a kitchen look modern? It’s all about simplicity. I always try to minimize the number of lines visible in the kitchen. This means choosing slab doors over profiled, 3 drawer cabinets over 4 drawers, and single door cabinets over 2 doors. Decorative components such as crown moldings and corbels are never used. What materials do you recommend when designing a European kitchen? Exotic veneers and painted MDF provide the greatest quality and the most authentic look. You will often see a combination of veneers and lacquers in the same kitchen. For example, the uppers may be a bold painted color while exotic veneers could be used on the bases. Eco friendly exotic veneers are a great choice as they are engineered using real wood and yet preserve the rare forests that these trees are found in.

I am planning on renovating my kitchen. What are some features I should consider? Storage and functionality considerations are a must. We provide products for all types of storage needs. Consider taking your wall cabinets to the ceiling to maximize your storage, and adding soft close to your doors and drawers will add a quiet touch. Rollouts or drawers versus shelves make items more accessible and corner drawers will definitely make your life easier. Pull out spice racks, utensil and cutlery trays will help you keep organized and recycle bins are a popular addition. Glass doors always add a nice fresh touch a will showcase your more decorative stored items. If we are considering resale at some point, what would you recommend in a kitchen reno?

It’s important to not only make choices that suit your style but to think of what is trendy and has market appeal. You will want your kitchen to be a wow factor when selling your home, so consider not only replacing your cabinets but also your countertops to a product like quartz or granite. If you have selected a counter with a pattern, choose a simple clean wall tile to compliment it and vice versa. Other things to consider are updating are your lighting, flooring, appliances, sink, faucet and hardware. A kitchen renovation is the best return on investment both in years of enjoyment and return on dollars spent. What are the trends in kitchen design for 2012? Kitchens are the center of household activity and entertaining. Therefore ensure you have an open concept so it is inviting and if you have the space an island is always great for gatherings. Black’s, grey’s, and whites are becoming more popular while using fresh, clean, simple lines. Ensure you have lots of seating. Two toned kitchens as well as two different countertops are popular. A traditional design will always be a timeless classic. FHS

EXPERTAdvice Adding new flourish to your home The new year’s hottest colours and design trends

Days Paints & Design 701 - 2nd Avenue North Saskatoon, SK S7K 2C9 p: 306.244.4721 e: km.rowlett@shaw.ca www.dayspaints.com If you’re looking to update your home in the new year, you’re probably looking for the quickest, most effective, but least expensive approach. In a word: paint. It is the easiest and, in most cases, the most affordable way to update a space. Add drama, softness or whimsy with just a can of paint and a spare afternoon. The colour trends for 2012 are diverse and exciting. The greys are still very popular, but we are seeing a shift to the warmer 52

FineHomes SASKATOON

Photos by Candace Epp tones, like Benjamin Moore’s AF-100 Pashmina or HC-172 Revere Pewter. Subtle colours like these are always successful in bridging the gap to other, warmer tones you may already have in your home.

Most of the furniture on display was of a very classic nature, yet modern with touches of metal, such as on the legs. Melding traditional design with the contemporary was a common theme.

This year we are also seeing a strong showing of creams and whites. These can be used as a background colour to offset stronger shades, or as the main colour itself. If greys are not for you, perhaps some of the beautiful shades of grey with blue and green tints would appeal to you. Mt. Saint Anne CC-710 or 2122-40 Smoke could make a lovely addition to any home. Whichever colour you do choose, make sure to bring the samples into the rooms that you are painting. Lighting can vary greatly, from the warm, orange tones of standard light bulbs to the stark, green tinge of fluorescents, significantly affecting paint’s colour to the naked eye.

Area rugs were everywhere. With the predominance of hardwood flooring in European homes (and also many Saskatchewan homes) the selection of area rugs was vast, ranging from traditional floral patterns to modern colour-blocking designs. The colour ranged from vibrant reds, greens and blues to more subtle taupes and creams.

Watching for new design trends is an ongoing process. On a recent trip to a UK interior design trade show, I was able to see many new and innovative products in wall covering, furniture, lighting, flooring and decorative drapery hardware. A notable standout was the slate wall covering—actual slate veneers that are applied to vertical wall surfaces. It’s a unique and impressive way to treat the walls of that special space. The lighting highlights featured many contemporary alternatives to the standard chandelier. Several statement light fixtures were showing warmer metals and a mixture of golden tones and silver.

The diversity for the decorative drapery hardware was astounding. Clear acrylic rods were very dominant as were dark wooded rods. The acrylic lines featured a lot of jewellery-like finials with crystals. The deeper coloured wooden rods featured some beautifully carved finials. The detail applied to both styles was exquisite. It was very interesting to see the similarities and also the differences in products both in Europe and here in Canada. Visiting this trade show opened many creative doors. It is always good to know what trend awaits us around the corner. FHS

Choosing a Back-up Generator for Your Home By Shell Busey

o avoid the inconvenience of a power outage, a back-up generator is a great way to ensure that you are never without power. A home generator can be useful for backup electricity anywhere there are frequent power outages. But the demand is increasing among homeowners particularly since most Canadian homes rely on electricity to operate their heating systems. There are Busey a few important items to By Shell consider when choosing a generator since they can also be very dangerous if they are not installed or operated properly. Generators range in size, type and price so it is worthwhile to shop around and talk to various distributors and your electrician to determine a unit that will suit your needs. Typically, the more power required the more costly they are. Smaller, portable generators are great for powering the essentials like the refrigerator and microwave while a permanent standby system can power everything in your home. Typically, the lower power and portable units use gasoline, whereas larger units, especially permanent installations, will likely use propane or natural gas.

A major question for homeowners considering a backup generator is choosing between gasoline or propane as well as one of the more convenient fuels, natural gas. Each source has its own pros and cons but the decision will depend on what a home already has installed. If you live in an area where natural gas is available this would be the best for you since it would be the most convenient and requires less maintenance. For homes without natural gas, propane is a good alternative. Both natural gas and propane tend to last longer and burn

cleaner than their gasoline counterparts. Gasoline generators are by far the most common type since gasoline is readily available and still remains a relatively inexpensive fuel in comparison to propane, but a gas generator usually requires frequent maintenance and storage of gasoline which has a relatively short shelf life.

10 hours. When the power goes out its absolutely critical that you keep the generator away from your house especially from doors, windows and enclosed areas. It’s important to follow the manufactures directions. Never try to attach a generator directly to the homes wiring system yourself. To use a portable generator without running extension cords you have to hire an electrician to install a manual transfer switch off your main circuit panel and install a dedicated inlet to power the subpanel. This is not a DIY project. Permanent Generators: Standby generators are powered by natural gas or propane and they’re directly wired into the home’s circuit panel so they can start automatically during a power outage. They are more powerful and quieter then their portable counterparts. When power resumes, the system flips back to the house circuit and powers down the generator.

Hire an Electrician Installation of a generator is a job for the experts. All portable or fixed generators must be connected to the residential grid using a proper CSA-approved transfer switch installed by a registered certified electrician. An electrical permit is required for the installation. Never connect a backup power system without a transfer switch that disconnects your home from the municipal power supply. This is to protect electric utility field crews from being electrocuted by your home power system when working on municipal lines.

What size generator do you need? The first step is to determine the amount of power you require during a power outage and that depends on how many appliances you need to run. This will determine the size or wattage of generator you will require. You may decide that all you need is to provide power the essential items such as to your sump pump, refrigerator and furnace.

Portable versus permanent Portable Generators: Portable generators can replace part of a household load during an electrical outage and they are the simplest and least expensive back up power system. When the power goes out you have to start up a gas powered generator and plug in your appliance using an extension cord. The down side is you are limited to the number of appliances that can run at any one time, they are noisy, hard to move and you have to start up and maintain the unit. They do require fuel so consider how long a tank of fuel will last. This can range from just a few hours to up to

Permanent generators are generally designed to power an entire large home for the duration of a typical outage. This is the best option if you frequently lose power and want to keep most of your appliances running. You don’t have to worry about storing gas and running cords, but the drawback is the cost and they must be installed by licensed electrician.

Protect against CO poisoning The primary hazards to avoid when using a generator are (CO) poisoning. Each year, people die in incidents related to portable generator use. Never use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Be sure the generator isn’t positioned outside an open window, which can allow fumes into the home. Install battery-operated (or with battery back-up) CO alarms in your home, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. CO alarms should be certified to the requirements of the latest safety standards (UL 2034, IAS 6-96, or CSA 6.19.01). Before you buy, check with local officials since your municipality may have restrictions on the noise caused by your generator (good neighbour policy). FHS Shell Busey is the popular host of the HouseSmart radio program live Monday evenings from 8 - 9 p.m. online at www.AM650Radio. com. EXPERTAdvice Transforming your garage into the family’s favourite room

Larry Westby Saskatoon Custom Garage Interiors, Inc. 3122 A Miller Avenue Elaine Westby p: 306.933.4320 elaine@customgarages.ca www.customgarages.ca Custom Garages is an idea whose time has come. The household garage used to be the dumping ground for junk, but it’s often the biggest room in a house, so people have started to realize that it makes more sense to use that space to its potential. A custom garage doesn’t have to be a man cave either; it can be designed to accommodate the whole family. Imagine the transformation when you replace the dark, cluttered walls with brightly-coloured metal cabinets, and swap out the dirty-looking, stained concrete floor with our polyaspartic industrial flooring that’s easy to clean. With a little furniture, that uninviting space has become a place to visit or play. Our flooring actually protects the concrete in your home. While concrete is very

Photos by Michelle Berg porous and absorbs things like water, salt, oil, diesel and grease, our flooring keeps it from soaking in. It’s easy to clean— water and soap will wash anything off its surface—and it looks great.

including the placement of the doors and windows. Not only does this blueprint give you a visual reference to look at, we can also use it to tailor the design to your needs and budget.

One of the easiest ways to make your garage more inviting is to install cabinets. Suddenly, all that seasonal clothing, golf clubs, recycling bins, camping gear and hockey bags have a place. With shelves that can hold up to 250 pounds, these heavy-duty cupboards are a great way to hide bulky stuff behind closed doors. Saskatoon Custom Garage Interiors has two show rooms with cabinets set up, so you can get a clear picture of all the different ways this stuff can be stored.

The cabinets are a great storage system, but sometimes it’s nice to have certain items ready at hand, especially if you use your garage as a workspace or a hobby. If you’d rather have some items out in the open, you might consider installing a slat wall made out of PVC, available in black, grey, beige, or white. An assortment of strong metal hooks gives you the ability to hang just about anything.

When we first opened our doors, we imported plywood cabinets from the States, but now we have them specially made in Saskatoon. And our metal Hayley cabinets are made in Calgary, so we can proudly say all of our cabinets are Canadian made. But how do you know the number of cabinets you need to install, and what the price point might be? Our design centre’s computer program allows us to plug in the measurements of your garage,

Also a great choice for hobbyists is installing a one-piece screen door for the garage. This screen attaches to your current garage door system, and swings down easily. It also includes a humansized door, making it easy to come and go. If you’re looking for more space in your home, don’t overlook the garage. With a little ingenuity, and a little help from Saskatoon Custom Garage Interiors, you can turn the junk room into one of the most popular rooms in the house. FHS

Feel the Heat Solar power is your next step in high efficiency heating. Saskatoon is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, getting an average 2,380 hours of sunshine every year. This means the energy for your hot water supply, swimming pool heating, and in-floor heating in your home and garage can be supplied almost entirely by the sun. The advantages speak for themselves. Save at least 25% in utility power costs and be eligible for $2,250 through the provincial and federal government rebate program. With larger, solar electrical PV grid-tie systems on a farm or an acreage, you could receive up to $35,000 in net metering rebates from the Saskatchewan government. Alternative energy systems designed by WSE Technologies are manufactured in Canada. They offer free technical support and offer a no-hassle one-year guarantee on all system purchases. Contact WSE Technologies to have a solar power heating system installed in your home, acreage or farm.

esigning a new home can be a fun but challenging endeavor. It takes research, plan development and collaboration with your home design professional to get the home you’ve always dreamed of. Your homes energy efficiency is an integral part of the home, not just an add on feature. Did you know that in Canada 80% of all residential energy use in 2008 was for space & water heating? (1) Quality home design looks at the operation of the entire home and integrates measures to reduce overall energy consumption.

60

FineHomes SASKATOON

Many new homes include high efficiency furnaces, HRV (Heat recovery ventilators) units and programable thermostats; all which go toward helping reduce energy consumption. Having said this, we can also make an impact by considering the following items during design.

Size of home The average home size in 1990 was 1249 square feet and has grown to 1378 square feet in 2008(1). That isn’t a huge increase but when you consider that the residential industry as a whole makes up 17% of the total energy use in Canada a reduction in home energy consumption can go a long way toward reducing the overall need for energy. So the idea is simple; build the home that best reflects your lifestyle and is sized appropriately. This isn’t a new concept, but is one that I’ve observed people have a disconnect with. Take the time to determine with your home designer your wants and needs and work to incorporate them into a functional plan that suits you. Try to avoid the “just in case” rooms; instead consider alternative solutions that may be appropriate. Having a home that fits your specific needs will in most cases be smaller than you first thought you needed; reducing the cost to build as well as operate.

Home Orientation Locating your home in relationship to the sun, prevailing winds and surrounding area is another consideration to be made during design. It stands to reason that if your home is located to take full advantage of natural daylight you can reduce the overall need for artificial lighting & by using solar heat gain, reduce the need for heating during the winter months. Having said that, we need to consider shading for these same windows during the summer; extending your roof overhangs , designing the home to provide protection or strategically placing deciduous trees in your landscape plans will all achieve results. There is also natural ventilation to consider. By placing operable windows on the exterior of the home, located in relation to prevailing winds you can pull a cross breeze through the home reducing your need to operate your air conditioning during summer months. These are by no means the only options available to reduce your homes energy consumption. These are simple ideas to consider when planning you new home; they don’t cost you anything but a little extra thought. ith winter upon us it is time for homeowners to start thinking about their furnaces. It is always important to schedule tune ups and ensure your filters are changed regularly. These two simple things can prevent major break downs from happening, especially in the cold months when everyone is so reliant on their furnace to properly heat their home.

Tune ups Furnaces will require maintenance or tune ups once a year, especially older models that have been in the home for 10 years or longer. Maintenance and tune ups should be a part of every homeowner’s

to-do list when preparing for the winter months. Inspections should be done by reliable and certified furnace companies. Knowledgeable technicians will know what to look for and can help you with simple filter changes, or more involved problems including major repairs or furnace replacements. Depending on the quality of filter, homeowners may need to change it every one-to-three months minimum. If you are unsure how often to change your filter, check the information that came with your system or call a technician who can help answer your questions. For unexpected break downs or furnace malfunctions McGill’s Mechanical has a 24-hour emergency no-heat call service, we can come to your home and service your furnace to ensure you and your family are taken care of right away.

SaskEnergy Network Member Every homeowner should know about the grants available for new and efficient furnaces through the provincial and federal government. As a SaskEnergy Network Member, we can help you through the process of figuring out how you can become eligible. After your energy evaluation and assessment you can then qualify for grants of up to $1,440 towards a new furnace upgrade. At McGill’s we can install your new system and give you advice on the best make and model for your home environment. The benefits of Energy Star rated furnaces, like the Carrier brand, include a more efficiently run system that will lower your energy costs and, of course, lower your monthly bill. Furnaces with a high AFUE rating are recommended for function and environmental friendliness. The higher the rating, the larger the percentage of fuel being utilized to heat your home, allowing for maximum efficiency while leaving a minimal environmental footprint. When updating your old system, McGill’s will help you choose from the best replacement options.

McGill’s Mechanical and Carrier Brand For further information regarding your heating system, or government grants for furnace upgrades, call the experts at

McGill’s Mechanical or visit www.saskenergy.com. We can help you with any questions or issues regarding maintenance, replacements, or installation of your furnace. Technicians at McGill’s can also help you with any other heating units including your home fireplace or garage heaters. McGill’s can repair all furnace makes and models, 24 hours a day to ensure you and your family are warm all winter long. We are also Saskatoon’s official dealer of Carrier products and can answer any question you might have regarding the brand’s makes and models. ecretly I think that Prairie gardeners enjoy the onset of colder weather and relish the heaps of snow consistent with this time of the year. Why, you might ask? Well, snow covers up all the “mistakes” from the previous garden season, puts an immediate halt to all things gardenesque and translates

Pine Cones

Cotoneaster Branches to “the pause that refreshes” for at least four months. What to do, what to do in this veritable vernal downtime? Why, we plan, of course, for next year’s gardening extravaganza. ‘Tis the season to rustle through magazines, absorb all those creative and oh-so-easy makeovers of reality TV shows and, of course, produce endless lists of “gotta-have” plant names. I can recall sweeping up dust pans full of evergreen tree needles off the living room floor deciding whether to compost them or donate them to the local landfill. This seasonal holiday conundrum is the fodder of many an inquiry and with good cause. Most people consider, or at least have heard, that needles of evergreen trees will cause the soil to become acidic. A true point but one must consider the soil pH, or degree of alkalinity or acidity that you are adding the material to. Generally speaking, the addition of a reasonable amount of needles to your compost heap, pile or bin or even directly to the garden will have a minimal acidifying effect. Needles are rather persistent as they do not break down as quickly as leaves, grass clippings and other plantbased materials. But really, who times how long it takes to decompose? Safe to say that

sweeping up and discarding the needles from your tree into the compost will be just fine; they may well still be there next year. Settling down for a long winter’s nap and of course with visions of sugar plums (or Hosta varieties) dancing in your head is not the least strange option for the gardener. I often wonder if there is a named neurosis associated with the actions that so many of us exhibit particularly virulent in the throes of the winter season. The near obsession with what the newest perennials will be for the following year; should that last shrub I purchased be moved in the spring, pruned in the fall; and what about that new deck, patio or outdoor kitchen? Maybe it is the ability of the gardener to drift off into a near trance-like state at the very glimpse of the first seed catalogue or “Martha-esque” design show on TV that keeps us sane (relatively) over the darkest period of the year. If not this, it is the trusted Amaryllis bulb fit to bursting with the promises of behemoth blooms, endless green foliage and at least a season’s worth of bragging rights. The reliable Amaryllis can be a show stopper for the festive season either as a cut flower or growing in a container. Why not try Amaryllis `Chico’ or `Papillio’ and prepare yourself for an amazing explosion of pink and unique style? In Europe, Amaryllis are often used as cut flowers, a trend that is beginning here in FineHomes SASKATOON

63

North America, so try it. Contact your local florist or garden centre staff to ensure that these Amaryllis can be sourced and if not, consider using high end artificial stalks. If you are a thematic sort, pink is huge again this season in Europe, as well as, here in North America. The actual pantone, or colour registration number is PANTONE 18-2120. You can search this color online or check at a paint store to get the true visual. In plant terms, this is Honeysuckle pink, a truly rich pink with its heritage based in the rich red family. Pink alone is a bit, well, pink and does need some “umph” to encourage it to speak in the sassy vernacular that only pink can pull off. What… pink is not a festive colour? Perhaps not a traditional colour, but married with the equally edgy chartreuse, this relationship screams high-end and cool. Outdoors during the winter prairies season is generally festooned with blinking, twinkling and icicle-like lights until the weather becomes more favourable for

removal, if at all. A great adjunct to lights is “nature-crafting” your planters, window boxes and assorted containers with, you got it, nature-based materials. What I find to be the most reliable, accessible and long lasting are red twigged dogwood, spruce or pine boughs, shrub rose branches (with rose hips) and white birch and cotoneaster branches.

of pine varieties and of course holly and Poinsettia. Enjoy the holiday season with all that comes with this time of the year. Wishing you good health, much happiness and a glorious New Year. FHS

Some folks like to include outdoor ribbon, artificial plant bits and small lights too; this is entirely your choice, your creation. If you leave your containers as I do with the planting media still in, the job of designing is much simpler, even in unpleasantly cold weather. I could espouse the theories of good design but really, use common sense and design the planters to suit your style, your home and your mood; it’s all good. These nature-crafted designs will last all winter long remaining frozen and tasteful until mild weather. There will be oodles of traditional plants to consider for the festive season as well. Consider incense cedar, the host

ll that glitters is glass in the Castle Designer Glass gallery showroom where a stunning array of rich hues and sparkling surfaces take a visitor’s breath away. In the back production area, two talented artists are busy creating one-of-a-kind pieces destined for buyers looking for beautiful and practical pieces to give their homes and businesses a feeling of depth, space, colour and light. While glass has long been a soughtafter canvass for artists, architects and designers in Europe, the medium is just now catching our eye here in Canada. It’s not just for windows and wine glasses any more. “Decorative glass is an extraordinarily versatile and beautiful architectural element for the way we live today,” says owner Janet Parkinson. “It enhances the elegance and style of any home and office, restaurant or hotel, for example, and kilnfired glass is very tough and durable.

66

FineHomes SASKATOON

When colours and patterns are painted on it from behind, a home or business can have strong and functional pieces like backsplashes, countertops, room dividers and door inserts, even furniture. These pieces are also entirely unique, gorgeous works of art.” Glass surfaces are easily cleaned so backsplashes and shower doors are a breeze to maintain. With each piece passing through the hands of Parkinson’s renowned artists, Gary Natomagan and Erin LaLonde, every product is a commissioned artwork that creates a rich decorative solution to any living or workspace. The technique of ‘slumping’ glass over a refractory mold creates a unique texture and design. The artists work with airbrushes, paint brushes and other texturing tools to create images ranging from abstract to intricately detailed realism.

Castle Designer Glass installs all architectural pieces and uses professional, experienced staff. Artwork exists on the back side of the glass so is never at risk of surface damage. Shower walls, railings, room dividers and signs are installed with clips and hardware to secure the piece in place. Backsplashes are installed with silicone instead of grout for greater antibacterial cleanliness. “If you are looking for something unique and beautiful then consider glass, it’s the perfect solution,” says Janet. Together with her professional sales staff and qualified, experienced installers, Janice Williams makes your flooring experience one you will never forget. Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors pride themselves on carrying Saskatoon’s ultimate selection of quality flooring products including tile, 68

hardwood, carpet, laminate, vinyl, cork and one of the best selections of area rugs in the city. As Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors have evolved, they’ve become well respected for their intricate, custom workmanship with granite, marble and tile designs for your entire house. Cornerstone also carries luxurious carpet and blinds to accent any room - all in the name of adding sophistication, strength, and increased value to your home or workplace.

“When we opened 10 years ago we only sold tile products,” says Janice. “As we grew with the city and our customers, we expanded to showcase all types of flooring and home products, even changing our name to ‘Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors’ to express our new scope.” Talking about trends for 2012, Janice says it will all be about tile. Porcelain and ceramic tile are not just for the kitchen or bathroom anymore, but throughout main-floor living spaces—even across

an entire feature wall. Natural stone tile products create a bold, elegant and always unique look, either indoors or out. Cornerstone has a variety of beautiful, natural stone products, including granite, marble and travertine, as well as porcelain and ceramic tiles to please any person. “Tiles will never lose popularity,” says Janice. “They’re something that people will always use in home decor, adjusting and adapting to modern trends and styles. We see clients choosing big, shiny 24 x 12 tile to mosaic tiles. People are tiling exterior walls and pillars of homes as well as commercial buildings.” Cornerstone carries a wide range of porcelain and ceramic floor and wall tile from renowned and reliable manufacturers such as Dal-Tile, Euro, Savoia, Olympia, and many more. With tile available in a wide variety of sizes and colors, the staff at Cornerstone can help you pick a look that’s perfect for your style at home. “Proper installation is just as important to the overall aesthetics,” says Janice. “We have highly-skilled journeyman tile setters on staff who always bring their professionalism and expertise into your home or place of work. We also install custom showers, back splashes, and other unique applications, such as tiled feature-walls, which are so popular right now.” Meanwhile, the trend toward hardwood continues; a timeless product in the flooring industry. Hardwood is synonymous with classic beauty and exquisite style. “We stock a wide variety of pre-finished hardwood including the standards like oak, ash, maple, and birch, but we also carry the fine exotic woods like bamboo,” says Janice. “For homeowners looking to create a rustic look, we also carry oiled oak, maple, birch, and larch.” The latest color trend in hardwood is shades of gray - a hue that feels both contemporary and quintessential at once. Carpet creates a stylish, luxurious look

while being both warm and comfortable on your feet. Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors carries all types of carpet from berber to shag. You will also find residential and commercial carpets from leading manufacturers that are tough, resilient, and able to withstand the rigors of daily action. Cornerstone is proud to supply one of the leaders in this area. Mohawk SmartStrand with Dupont Sorona renewably sourced polymer is the only carpet with natural, built-in stain and soil resistance built directly into the fiber during manufacturing. Stains or dirt can be washed out of SmartStrand carpet just with water. Each SmartStrand carpet strand has a unique “kink” structure that bends and rebounds quickly and easily to resist the crushing and matting that can happen with other carpets. SmartStrand carpet is engineered with DuPont Sorona renewably sourced polymer, which is made in part from actual corn, meaning it uses less energy to produce—a gorgeous carpet that offers both durability and stain protection, while also being environmentally friendly. If you’re not ready to commit to wallto-wall carpeting, area rugs add color, comfort, and flair to any room. Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors carries a wide selection of both contemporary and classic area rugs in a virtually neverending variety of colors, patterns and materials. Don’t see what you’re looking for? Janice and her staff will not rest until you find it. They are ready to order you a rug perfectly suited to your needs. Laminate is the ultimate in flooring versatility, creating either a hardwood or tiled look to your room. It’s durable and affordable. Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors carries laminates from reputable companies like Armstrong, Mannington, and Quickstyle. Vinyl flooring, available in numerous patterns, weights and textures, is perfect for any room in the house. Cork is a natural alternative made from a renewable source, making it environmentally friendly. Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors sells both gluedown and easy-to-install interlocking laminate boards. 70

With such a wide variety and selection of flooring to choose from, there’s also a good reason that “Interiors” is part of the company’s name. Saskatoon’s Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors offers an extensive line of custom window treatments, including cellular shades, faux wood blinds, horizontal blinds, shutters, solar shades, wood blinds and a range of vertical solutions. Their blinds add a touch of elegance to your home. Getting ready to celebrate their 10th anniversary, Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors have become one of Saskatoon’s most trusted names in home decor. One thing has never changed: Cornerstone Flooring and Interiors strives for the utmost in quality of service

any of Saskatoon’s finest homes feature high-quality staircases and railings designed and built by BP Banister, from spectacular winding staircases to simple but elegant pieces. “The staircase is a dramatic focal point of the home,” says owner Bernie Pauls. “It shouldn’t be an afterthought, because it will be seen all the time. It needs to be done well.” In April 2001, Bernie and Cheryl Pauls started BP Banister with three staff in a small rented bay on Miners Avenue. The business grew quickly, with office, showroom and production areas doubling in size with the rental of the adjacent bay and eventual purchase of both bays. At 10 years, BP Banister has completed another showroom and building facade renovation.

Bernie welcomes clients to visit their new showroom featuring BP Banister’s latest designs and signature pieces. Small-scale staircase replicas are displayed, along with portions of actual size staircases, banisters and railings. With the focus on custom projects, staff members are eager to help clients through the design process, even encouraging them to adapt designs they’ve seen elsewhere into their projects. “We try to keep on the cutting edge, and like to stay modern. We have a lot of creative people here who love to design,” Bernie says. Projects by BP Banister, from beginning to end, incorporate design and manufacturing done right in its Saskatoon plant. BP Banister was clearly the best choice for me when selecting a company to rebuild my cabin. They helped me to choose the correct design for my beautiful maple staircase, and provided the railings for my catwalk, and throughout my entire cabin. The quality of work was nothing short of spectacular, and exceeded my expectations. What was equally important to me as the quality of the build, was the quality of the person behind it. Bernie is still one of those great guys who charges a dollar for a dollar’s worth of work, does what he says he is going to do, and obviously believes that customer service and satisfaction is still the most important thing he can offer. of professionals install the product on location to the customer’s satisfaction. Bernie is proud of his team and says he hasn’t experienced the high rate of turnover so common in building trades. “Our installers are totally trustworthy. We have people hand over their keys to us, and we recognize that responsibility and trust for what it is,” he says. Bernie realizes the value of treating clients with respect and is proud of the good reputation BP Banister has earned. After working in the industry for as long as he has, he says he knows the value of instilling trust, confidence and satisfaction in his customers. He is also grateful for BP Banister’s loyal customers and thanks them for 10 successful years. Bernie grew up on the family dairy and grain farm in the Medstead and Spiritwood area, about 250 kilometres north of Saskatoon. His father’s hobby was building furniture, which intrigued young Bernie. As he grew up building toys and framing buildings on the farm, Bernie soon realized this love of building would turn into a career in millwork. After finishing high school and moving to Saskatoon, Bernie worked at J&H Builders’ Warehouse before enrolling in

74

FineHomes SASKATOON

a cabinet making and millwork course at Kelsey Institute in 1984. The next 17 years working for three different Saskatoon cabinetry and woodworking companies gained him much experience in the industry and honed his considerable skill, but he always knew that at some stage he wanted to have his own business. “You need the confidence and courage to start,” he says, and so, with encouragement from other local business owners, Bernie started fulfilling his dream. Now, in just 10 years, BP Banister has grown to a staff of 22, has teamed up with many Saskatoon homebuilders and individual clients, and has gained tremendous respect from the larger local construction community. Bernie says his goal has always been to make sure his customers are very happy with the finished product. Part of this is ensuring that each customer feels comfortable with what he and his staff can offer. “We want them to feel they’ll be listened to and looked after, and that their needs will be met.” He’s not afraid to charge what a job is worth, he says, but he also ensures that BP Banister produces the satisfactory results its clients expect. “It’s important that everybody gets what they’re paying for, and I want to make sure

that the end result is something I would be happy with myself.” While Bernie doesn’t have as much time for hands-on manufacturing as he’d like, he does stay involved in some design work and in the installation of the larger and more complex staircases. It helps him stay connected with the shop employees and keeps him close to the finished products the company is proud of. “I keep busy maintaining relationships,” he says. “Relationships are important to me, so I spend time on that as much as I can.” From office to shop to site, Bernie is proud and grateful for the skilled people that BP Banister employs, and the expertise that goes into the completion of every BP Banister project. Four decades oF value, personal service and

n all the years that Western Carpet One Floor & Home has been helping people select the right floor coverings, and throughout all the changes in the industry, one thing is unwavering: relationships built on trust are the key to a loyal and

satisfied customer base. A sale is a happy consequence of good service, but just as important is a customer who feels respected, listened to and supported. “A home upgrade, an insurance project,

a business renovation or a new build can be exciting. But it can quickly become daunting and stressful as people realize the choices they have today,” says David Roden, an owner with Don Storey, David Epp and Justin Bussiere. “There are a lot of

products and a lot of variables to consider in every project. If we can work with a customer through all those issues, we can help them make the best decision. I’d say we act much more like consultants than salespeople. If it’s not going to work, or it’s not the right product for the purpose, we’ll say so. It does us no good if someone buys from us and six months later, they’re not happy. When we ask the right questions and listen, we know people will be more than satisfied.”

Gone are the easy-fix early days when flooring choices were vinyl or carpet. In the past decade or so, the floor covering industry has exploded, and Western Carpet One made it a mission to stay well informed about the type of products being developed. “It was definitely a younger generation who started appreciating the possibilities,” he says. “My grandparents had a red shag rug that covered beautiful hardwood. They were of the generation who remembered that hardwood was hard work and high maintenance. That’s no longer the case.

The first thing the young family who bought the house did was reveal and restore the original hardwood.” New-build show homes were predominantly using carpet and vinyl, but as a few builders started to use more specialty floors like hardwood and tile, Western Carpet could see where the demand was heading. Industry technology has come along way and the hardwood today isn’t like Grandma’s used to be. It’s tougher and easier to maintain. The engineered, more environmentally friendly material is in greatest demand. But hardwood isn’t perfect. It is a natural product that will react to whatever environment it is in. Hardwood popularity has perhaps plateaued as other materials like tile, cork, laminate and even leather make inroads to the market. Today, tile is a popular product whether for flooring in kitchens and bathrooms, complete bathroom renos or in smaller projects like backsplashes. But, says Roden, whether it’s tile, laminate, hardwood or carpet, today’s customers

project in order for the customer to have all the information for the best solution.

“People who walk through our doors have done a lot of research. We don’t really sell people anything anymore; we consult on their projects and help them refine their search. We ask a lot of questions. How do you live? What kind of family do you have? Do you have pets? We do a lot more listening than talking.”

“Ours isn’t a cookie cutter approach,” Roden promises. “We want to be sure people get what they want and what will work for them. The right flooring can make such a significant improvement in a home or business, so we want to help people make good decisions.”

It’s very important that buyers realize no single floor covering is the perfect solution.

‘Wall stuff’ popular complement to flooring

“The kind of values and culture we started out with are still what we have today,” Roden says. “We want people to feel we’re approachable and knowledgeable and to know they won’t feel pressured here. We understand this is not a quick, easy process, and we encourage people to take their time.”

When homeowners, home stagers and interior decorators want to freshen up or update a room with items that will show it off at its best, they are drawn to the home décor department at Western Carpet One Floor & Home. Owner David Roden calls it “wall stuff” but merchandiser Erin Boris calls it one of the best and most affordable collections of home decorating items in the city.

Western Carpet One sales staff and estimators will visit properties to measure and consider the unique features of the

If it’s wall art, framed mirrors, sconces, or clocks, this is the destination to hit first. You may not need to widen your search

any further. Three years ago, Western Carpet expanded its flooring showroom and owner David Roden says it was the perfect opportunity to offer something extra. “We always felt that home décor was a good complement to our flooring business,” says Roden. He gives all the creative credit to Boris, who is bringing in unusual, unique and very affordable items. Roden says interior designers and decorators have a tremendous amount of influence on the kind of product people are buying. They can, he says, help people find wonderful but inexpensive accessories that can change the look and feel of a room. “Designers and people who do home staging for builders and realtors can find some great cosmetic things here that really improve the look of a home,” Roden says. “We’re still finding our niche, and Erin is developing relationships with good FineHomes SASKATOON

sources to find things people will really like to have.” “I really appreciate the selection that Erin brings in,” says Chantelle Butterfield, an interior designer and professional shopper, as well as the owner of Funktional Space. “You never know what you’re going to find, but I know that I can pass along good savings to my clients because the items are so reasonably priced.” Roden calls the flooring side of Western Carpet One Floor & Home, the “bread and butter” of the business. But he knows customers enjoy the beautiful, affordable “wall stuff” available to everyone who comes in to shop. “The home décor side is fun for us,” he says. “We’re able to give our customers that little something extra for very good value. As more people stop in to see what we have, I think that word will really get around.”

serving the community that serves their business After 38 years as a successful, trusted business in Saskatoon, the owners of Western Carpet One Floor & Home know a few things about how to keep that streak going. This company believes that giving back is as big as the bottom line. Western Carpet One offers the wildly

popular breast cancer awareness welcome mats, featuring the iconic pink ribbon. When owner David Roden first heard about them at a convention, he brought the idea back to Saskatoon, saying, “We have to do this!” Western Carpet One sells in the neighbourhood of 150 mats annually, at cost, and adds $10 each to the proceeds. Donations go to the Canadian Cancer Society and, to ensure local impact, to the Diamond Links Golf Tournament at Moonlake in support of the Breast Health Centre and the C95 radio marathon for breast cancer research. “Lisa Rendell was a long-time customer and just an amazing person,” says Roden. “Both the golf tournament and the C95 Marathon are run so well. The organizers do an excellent job. What Lisa did with the radio marathon was amazing.” Roden says it’s not just that the company has chosen the cause, but so many staff and customers have a connection to the issue. Roden, who says he’s follically-challenged, had his own head shaved in a fundraiser, and decided kept the look. He’s proud of his staff who have followed suit and feel compelled to support the cause.

photos by Heather Fritz

Another issue close to the company’s heart is mental health. Their staff golftournament raises funds for the Mental Health Association, while staff, installers and suppliers also donate from their own pockets. Having this personal connection “really opened our eyes and galvanized our desire to do something,” Roden says. “We’re all family here, a really tight group, so these two issues are something we feel strongly about and pull together on. It is our responsibility as a company and as members of this community. We’ve had so many people support us over the last 38 years that giving back and giving local is very important.” FHS

of the Alustra Collection. Choose from the shimmering essence of champagne to the sophisticated warmth of gold and bronze. These finishes add a distinctive detail to every home. Sophisticated by not stuffy.

I found the solution recently at the Decorex International interior design show in London, England. I was able to explore a world of options with window coverings, only to come to the realization that there is no other product or facsimile that compares with Alustra Silhouette window shading. This product transforms direct sunlight into a soft, warm glow--referred to as “day lighting”-- and also protects your home’s interior from damaging ultraviolet rays. The soft fabric of the Signature S-Vane, available in three sizes of two, three and four inches, is suspended between two elegant sheers, diffusing harsh light, reducing dark shadows, obscuring the view into the home, while also providing 88 per cent UV protection when tilted open, and 99 per cent when fully closed.

In my mind, these are truly the best finishing touches to any well-designed room.

A new and intriguing selection of colours and natural textures has recently been added to the collection. A distinctive, added touch is the exclusive metallichardware finish, a signature design element

The Silhouette Window Shading comes with the Hunter Douglas Lifetime Guarantee. Always remember, a quality, timeless window covering adds energy efficiency and value to your home. FHS

The Silhouette window shades allow for 80 per cent of through-view, without distracting cross bars, bulky stacks, support cords, or tapes, as the window shade rolls up into the head rail. Until recently there were four lifting mechanisms to choose from: Ultra Glide, Easy Rise, Power Rise 2.0 Platinum Technology and Hardwired motorization. We would like to be one of the first to introduce the new Lite Rise Lifting System. Just imagine: no cords, giving your windows a clean, uncluttered appearance. These shades offer both light control and enhanced child safety.

Working AheAd Don’t be left out in the cold for your spring projects

THE KEY TO ANY SUCCESSFUL DESIGN PROJECT IS IN THE PLANNING Sometimes, you need to wait for the stars to align. Also, don’t start any projects when Mercury goes into Retrograde (but that’s a story for another day!) Kitchens and bathrooms: Take 3 to 4 months to properly plan out and then six to 12 weeks (depending on scope) to make happen. Setting up a temporary utility sink in place of the old kitchen is a life saver!

n design, we are always working ahead. On average, we as designers are always looking three to four months ahead and planning for that season. In late summer, we are thinking holiday rush and now that the holidays are upon us, I am already finding myself thinking about what spring projects need planning. The key to any successful design project is in the planning. I always advise prospective clients to invest in as much planning as possible when it comes to their projects. In the thick of it all, having a good plan to fall back on will steer you through the rough patches that inevitably occur over the course of any design project. If you are considering a renovation project small or large for 2012, here are some things to take into consideration in terms of planning your timelines. Remember, just because you finally make the decision to embark on a project doesn’t mean that the right designer (ahem me), contractor or tradesperson will be ready and waiting to take your project on the moment you decide to hit go!

Additions/Demolitions: Anything that requires permits you should allow three to six months for planning. Depending on your local bylaws this process could become considerably lengthier if you have to apply for zoning changes. For major renovations, you should also factor into your planning the time what it will take to find alternative living arrangements. If you think you will need to live elsewhere for six months, make it eight months. At

the end of a renovation project no one ever says, “Wow, that went faster than I expected,” nor do they say, “Wow, that cost less than I expected!” Contingencies in timelines, budgets and design plans are always necessary if you are going to have a successful experience. So, with 2012 on the horizon, if you are considering taking on a design project for your own home, the quiet month of December is actually a great time to reach out and begin the investigation process with a design professional. The best contractors are usually taken by the end of January for the spring and summer months so keep that in mind. Maybe this year you’ll find a new kitchen or bathroom in your stocking—if you’ve been good that is.

Here’s to a Gorgeous 2012!

e’ve all got them: trinkets, photo albums, souvenirs and sports collections. They are important reminders of times, faces and places past. Yet today these items can often be found collecting dust, fading on a forgotten shelf or hidden away in a drawer. They deserve better, and so do your memories. Allow Saskatoon’s J&S Picture Frame Warehouse help transform these neglected mementos into a treasured piece of memorabilia that will become a part of your family’s new history. Sherry Morris has owned and operated J&S in Saskatoon for the last 33 years; she’s spent that time gaining extensive experience working with collectibles and preservation (archival) framing, using the latest technology to not only frame works of art, but create masterpieces.

Photographs are translated into works of art on-site at J&S Picture Frame Warehouse, using reprographics, a process by which drawings and paintings are scanned at a high resolution to capture as much detail as possible. Digital alterations correct or eliminate imperfections, while works can be resized or turned to black and white or sepia. The possibilities are almost endless, resulting with a magnificent keepsake to be showcased with pride. “We’re about providing the ultimate in both materials and craftsmanship to preserve your treasures, keepsakes and works of art,” says Sherry. “Every project we start for our clients is finished with superb artistry, expert advice and friendly service.” FHS

My husband Shawn and I didn’t budget for any major changes this year other than our new front door and getting the whole house painted, but we would like to see a nice backsplash in the kitchen, new valance or curtains and I guess depending on the cost, everything else is pretty optional. ~Thanks, Lori

BEFORE

• Adding only one colour to the whole space will make the house look larger • A traditional subway tile will add drama, be more functional and is easy to clean • A well designed interior creates a peaceful and enjoyable environment.

Hey Lori, thanks for asking! I have a few thoughts on how to achieve the look you’re after without a lot of expense. First, you can lightly sand—and I mean really lightly sand—your cabinets and then add a lacquer stain in a slightly darker mid-tone colour. Doing this will add drama and contrast to your table, stools and chairs and other furniture. Fix the ceiling and add a few pot lights for a contemporary look or if you love the light and you’re not up for fixing the ceiling, paint the light out to match the ceiling and make it blend as opposed to being a feature.

Consider replacing your phone with an oldfashioned one. Adding three larger items on you shelf will anchor your shelf, add personality and be functional. Add a couple of shelves for a few old spice jars, salt and pepper or two more tiles like the one you have above the stove. I would remove the corkboard, it’s hard to relax and enjoy a meal when you have to look at tomorrow’s bills. In the hall space, add a few more pictures of the same size or get creative with different sizes, shapes and colours. I would suggest painting your walls Para’s Stoneware Tint One. It’s a warm, grey-browngreen; it changes depending on the light and time of day.

Adding only one colour to the whole space will make the house look larger. It’s like dressing in one colour, it always makes us look taller. Last but not least, a beautiful, traditional subway tile will add drama, be more functional and it’s easier to wipe the spaghetti sauce off of. Enjoy your new space and I look forward to your after photos! Sincerely, Chantelle

esign and Innovation come together at Kitchen & Bath Classics says Saskatoon’s Lori Nadrowski.

“I have a passion for this, we all do here. And at the end of the day we want to provide the best options for your kitchen and bathroom designs.” The Kitchen & Bath Classics showroom manager says plumbing brings together aesthetics and function in a variety of interesting and challenging combinations. When working with clients renovating character homes, for example, Nadrowski enjoys trying to find ways a 90-year-old house’s limited pipe infrastructure could support the latest technical marvels in bathroom and kitchen fixtures. “We try to find a way to meet their needs, 90

but make it applicable to the home,” she says, adding there is such diversity in contemporary plumbing options. She has even helped clients design dog showers for the bathroom off the garage. “Plumbing — it’s interesting where it ends up taking you.” At Saskatoon’s Kitchen & Bath Classics (649 51 St. E.), Nadrowski says there are literally decades of plumbing supply experience amongst the six-person staff, and the 418 square-metre Showroom carries a vast range of products to meet any lifestyle. “We are a large showroom and we have access through our many warehouses, to all sorts of plumbing fixtures.” Be it for toilets, sinks, vanities, tubs

or shower doors, kitchen faucets, garborators, water filtration systems or water softeners, Kitchen & Bath Classics carries well known and also exclusive brands such as Toto, American Standard, Delta, Moen, Pfister, Kindred, Grohe, Blanco, Riobel, Ronbow, Brizo, Mirabelle, Produits Neptune, Bain Ultra, Waste King, Maax, Fairmont, Latorre and Duravit. Nadrowski says the store showroom is an excellent starting point for those looking to furnish a new home or renovate. She says Kitchen & Bath Classics maintains a solid relationship with designers and contractors throughout Saskatoon and northern Saskatchewan, so her staff can essentially work as a liaison for any project. For new home constructions, Nadrowski says Kitchen & Bath Classics works

closely with several builders, so she can consult with customers before the framing stage and decide what might work in the various spaces available long before building is complete. “Basically, we take a look at the space we’re working with and, through consultation find the best options” she says, adding her job is largely to find out what the general desires and needs are of the client, and from there find complementary materials to perfect the kitchen and bathrooms. “We can help them pick a fixture that will fit their style…. We always try to get to learn about our customers.” According to Nadrowski, homeowners will often come into the store on the recommendation of builders or designers. She says Kitchen & Bath Classics staff not only help select products to meet particular economic and lifestyle needs, but also coordinate with contractors to ensure items are in place at the proper time during construction. “For example with kitchen sinks, when the cabinet designers are ready, we can time it to have those sinks in place.” But one need not have a contractor to take advantage of Kitchen & Bath Classics services. As well, she says staff are accustomed to working with those who are constructing or renovating properties on their own, without contractors.

“There are clients building their own homes, self contracting and also tackling a renovation themselves.” Nadrowski says her free in-store design consultations are made as easy as possible for the customers, who can just bring in such items as paint, carpet or tile samples and she will put her expertise to work, while coordinating their plumbing fixtures. Kitchen & Bath Classics carries a range of plumbing items as diverse as its customers, Nadrowski says. If one wants a classic antique feel in a new home, she can accommodate. If one wants an ultramodern kitchen and bathroom with the latest in faucet technology, she offers that too. Nadrowski says sensor and touch faucets are becoming ever more popular, for example. She says Kitchen & Bath Classics sells energy-efficient low-flow toilets too, which are ergonomic and high performance. Accessible designs for fixtures are available too such as decorative grab bars, walk in tubs and low profile tubs such as the Produits Neptune Laura. Another favorite item is steam suites, which Nadrowski says can either be purchased as entire units, or one can build a larger tiled steam room and Kitchen & Bath Classics will provide the appropriate generator system.

“They’re very popular,” she says. “I find it very therapeutic for allergies. The moisture it’s putting back into your body is just lovely.” For those interested in seeing such a product, Kitchen & Bath Classics has a working steam shower set up in its Saskatoon showroom. Produits Neptune show that tub designs are trending toward clean lines and spacious designs. Produits Neptune has a variety of options such as whirlpool or air systems that allow each client to customize their tub features. Produits Neptune also offers a variety of sizes within one tub design such as the ZEN and Delight which allows the client to find the perfect fit for their bathroom.

its products, but also the care she and her staff put into servicing each and every one of those many customers. As for herself, Nadrowski says she will continue with her plumbing passion, providing information and advice that helps homeowners in Saskatoon and elsewhere attain their ideal kitchens and bathrooms. She says her job is forever interesting, challenging and satisfying. “With plumbing, before I came here I would never have thought it, but there is so much interesting variety you can put in your home.”

Personalized solutions for stunning window treatments By Ashleigh Mattern he trend forecast for window treatments in 2012: whatever works for you. “Basically the trend is whatever the homeowner likes,” said Kim Lang, owner and manager of Budget Blinds. “The trend is whatever works with your lifestyle and your décor, because ultimately, you have to live with it. The trend is whatever you desire, not the trend of the day.” At Budget Blinds, functionality is as

important as fashion, and your budget is part of the creative process.

treatments, we can work with you on that.”

They’ve helped customers with projects that cost $200, to projects in excess of $60,000. In every case, the Budget Blinds employees work closely with the client to create the space they crave.

Budget Blinds does a lot more than just blinds; you’ll also find all kinds of window coverings from shutters to shades to draperies to faux iron tableaux window treatments, as well as area rugs, headboards, closet doors, bedding, cushions, and more.

“We can fit any budget from entry level to sky’s the limit,” said Lang. “From concept to completion, anything you can creatively think about for window

Having all of these different room dressings in one place makes it easier to

coordinate a look, matching patterns and colours. “Custom colour has become quite an ideal solution,” said Lang, “so people can have true customization to coordinate with everything in their home, if that’s what they choose.” When outfitting your house, you’ve got to do what’s right for you, but there are many popular approaches to consider when decorating. When talking about energy efficiency in the home, most people think of large appliances and the physical structure of the house, but the right blinds can also make a difference. “Shutters are great for energy efficiency and sound absorption,” said Lang. “They’ll buffer the noise, they’re timeless, and they keep the heat out in the summer and keep the cold out in the winter.” For a softer look, you might choose cellular blinds. These blinds create a much softer look than shutters, and have the added benefit equivalent to one inch of Styrofoam to help buffer noise and help with energy efficiency. They’re also all white on the side facing the street so people living in condos can adhere to their guidelines, but can still have colour in their room. Alternatively, you could do a hard treatment like shutters, and then add drapery or even just a side panel to add a softer flair. Drapery is making a comeback in home design, says Lang, either in accent panels or valances or full wall to wall drapery. And Budget Blinds can coordinate drapery with pillows and other coverings, like something for the piano benches, for example, though they recommend doing your basic window coverings first, and then adding drapery once you’ve established your whole décor. “The drapery is like the jewelry on the window,” said Lang. More often the domain of living rooms 94

from the past, draperies and fabrics are finding their way into unexpected places, like the bedroom. “Draperies add a softer feel to your bedroom to make it more inviting and more relaxing for your peace and solitude,” said Lang. And a creative approach to closet doors is to put fabric panels on a sliding track. “They still have access to their closet, but they can do it in a more fashionable sense than just a closet door, and it can coordinate with their windows and soften the room as well.” Motorized blinds are also popular, but as much fun as the boys might have with motorized blinds, the driving force behind this trend is functionality. “We had one lady with a large picture window and a row of plants, then her couch. To operate her shades, she would have had to move everything and rearrange the room, so we motorized it and that solved all her problems. She got to keep her room set up exactly how she wanted it and how it best worked for her with the convenience of a remote to operate her shade.” There’s no need to be fearful or hesitant when choosing window treatments. Each option comes in a host of designs and styles, and the type of treatment you choose will be entirely unique to your situation. In window treatments nothing is too passé or taboo: “Vertical blinds are also making a comeback, believe it or not, with sleek head rails and quite fun fabrics,” said Lang. If you’re not sure what you want, you can visit their showroom at 102-2834 Millar Avenue, or even better, Budget Blinds can bring the showroom to you with their free, in-home consultations. “The showroom is in the van,” said Lang. “The consultant will listen to what you’re looking for, your needs, the functionally, what you like and don’t like.”

The Budget Blinds consultant will help narrow the number of choices with the customer’s guidance, and bring along a host of ideas and samples. Right now, everything in the store is custom-made, but early next year Budget Blinds will be coming out with a stock drapery program. “It’s for people who want soft treatments and don’t want to spend a fortune on adding a little bit of drapery,” she said. “There’s over a 100 different patterns and colours and customers will be able to get it in various different lengths with coordinating pillows and valances.” Drapery doesn’t have to be over the top expensive. Budget Blinds can work within any budget to come up with creative and stunning solutions for window treatments. To find out more, check out their website at budgetblinds.com/saskatoonsouth. FHS

here is an old expression that says you should always buy a good pair of shoes and a good bed—because if you’re not in one, you’re in the other. It’s a solid logic. And for the same reason that construction workers don’t wear stilettos, choosing the right bed comes down to comfort. Choosing a bed that suits your needs rests entirely on personal preference. Disregarding price, package, deals, and duvets, what makes a bed right for you is how you feel when laying on it—soft or firm, king, queen, or twin. But how do you go about finding the right one? Easy. With the

right salesperson asking the right questions, and with a little time to kick off your shoes and test-drive a few beds, the right mattress can be discovered. The most important things to remember when buying a new bed is to dispel the common myths behind the practice. The value of a bed versus the price you pay are two very different things. There is no such thing as a half-off sale, and there is no such thing as a free gift. You are there to buy a bed, and the bells and whistles are there to draw you into a bed that might not be the best one for you. And chances are you are paying for your free gift in the cost of the bed. Buyers must understand that the price is not an indicator of quality, neither is the savings. You have to understand the foaming, the coiling, and the make of the bed to understand the quality of the purchase. Having the highest coil count doesn’t mean you are getting the best bed. Personal

needs like pressure, motion transfer issues, and specific coiling systems make up your personal checklist for the perfect bed. You must also look beyond the brand names and make a decision to go with what makes you the most comfortable. A lot of the time when people are looking at purchasing a bed they come in with preconceived notions of what they want. Instead of following personal preference, a customer can often get hung up on recommendations from friends, from discount sales, or from information online. In reality there are differences in each bed from store to store. Manufacturers make specific beds for specific retailers. The qualities of beds differ as a result. So take your time, look around, and find the bed that’s right for you. Then, and only then, can you sleep soundly and comfortably. FHS
