洁的道路旁，壮观的育人楼与周围挺拔的树木，自然地融合 在一起，茂盛的枝叶在艳阳天里为华中人撑起一片清凉的 树荫，陪伴着我们走过一年又一年。
从1974年高中部成立至今，黄城见证了莘莘学子的成 长。在两年的学习生活中，华中人留下了值得终生珍藏的友 谊和回忆。近年来，随着学生人数的日益增加，原有的基础 设施已不胜负荷。课室、研讨室、实验室、课程辅助活动 室、运动场等已无法应付需求，这促使校方决心斥资兴建育 人楼，以打造多元化的学习环境，为学生提供高素质的全方 位教育。
2 计划中的新建筑楼高六层，包括第一层供举办各类活动 及校友聚会的活动区、以及分布在其他楼层的教学区、阅读 讨论区、室内体育馆、篮球场、射击场、壁球室、舞蹈室、 电子图书室、会议室、高等教育咨询处、天台花园以及康乐 休闲空间等。
新育人楼的外观除了延续华中的传统特色，也采用了现 代化绿色建筑的设计概念，充分显示华中长期以来对环保

Contrary to his imposing stature, Timothy Yap (11A15) comfortably eased into conversation with his down-to-earth nature. This August, Timothy was conferred the prestigious President’s Scholarship 2013 to read Law at Oxford University. He is both flattered and humbled by this recognition. During his time in Hwa Chong Institution, Timothy took advantage of the numerous opportunities the school provided to hone his leadership potential. With the firmest belief to contribute his time and effort, he served as the President of the High School Council and Chairperson of the Social and Relations Committee of the 38th Students’ Council. The multiplicity of his school experiences in organizing the 5th Asia-Pacific Young Leaders Summit and an overseas community project in Cambodia is testament to his capabilities and

passion to serve. Most of us are familiar with peer pressure

and stress in Hwa Chong, and Timothy is no exception. His advice is to take peer pressure as an encouragement and be resilient facing it. “Failure is an important lesson,” he articulates. Knowing how to improve the next time round is an important ingredient for his success. To handle failure, Timothy advocates a three-step process by which one should acknowledge one’s mistake, resume one’s responsibilities while reflecting and ultimately, learn from the error. Public service, to Timothy, has a dual meaning — that of policy-making and a personal conception of the phrase. At an administrative

level, he agrees that civil service is essential to a society’s well-being. His personal view is grounded in the school value of 饮水思源, which he feels is an imperative to help the less fortunate and marginalized. Timothy’s family plays an indispensable role in shaping his values. He attributes his unyielding belief in service to others to his mother, who epitomized the notion of sacrifice, by giving up her job to take care of him and his brother; and his faith in tenacious hard work to his father. More importantly, the flame igniting Timothy’s aspiration to take on a uniformed career in the police force is his older brother. From him, Timothy learnt the importance of taking ownership of one’s country not out of calculated, transactional benefits, but out of the loyal desire to serve. We congratulate Timothy on his achievements and wish him all the best in his future endeavors!

While the release of the A-Level results is undoubtedly an important milestone for many Hwa Chongians, it is but one of the first steps in their life journeys. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Here are some memories of that wonderful day.

Toh Zheng Xiang Zheng Xiang owns an impressive portfolio, being the Section Leader of the military band, as well as organizing his service learning project that targets the under-represented elderly. He staunchly believes that he has not done enough to contribute to Singapore, and feels that he has gained more from others, and wants to do much more. His years in HCI are chronicled by many meaningful experiences, including his participation in the Integrated Boarding Program and being an active member of the High School Council. For someone who has experienced a wide variety of opportunities that HCI has to offer, he still would like more time to be spent in school and advises his juniors to treasure their experiences. He is a recipient of the Public Service Commission Overseas Merit Scholarship (Open) and wishes to read economics at Yale.
Marcus Lee A quiet and reserved gentleman, one can yet immediately feel the authority Marcus had as Captain of the canoeing team. He has a lot to be thankful for, especially when it comes to his teammates who had shed blood and tears alongside him, and his teacher mentors who shaped his philosophy and outlook on life. He is a fervent believer in the values of hard work and perseverance, and wants to pass them on to his juniors. However, he places equal importance on rest and relaxation and abides by his motto of “living one day at a time”. He has been awarded the SAF Overseas Scholarship to study physics at Oxford.
Timothee Yap Timothee served as the sprints Captain of the Track and Field team, winning multiple medals at various regional competitions and setting a new record in the 4 x 400m relay. The winner of the 2011 New Paper School Sports Star Award, Timothee used the prize money to buy new sports equipment for HCI as a sign of gratitude. He is driven by the desire to raise the bar continuously, and cites his teammates and tutors as the driving force behind his achievements. His advice to his juniors is simple: To succeed, sportsmen must apply the same determination and discipline in training towards their studies. Timothee hopes to study Statistical Science or Financial Engineering in Princeton or Stanford.
Lee Shi Yan Shi Yan is, at first glance, disarmingly affable; in no way does she give the imposing vibe usually expected of those in authority. Yet, her undeniable inner courage earned her the post of President of the College Students’ Council, despite facing candidates vastly more outspoken than her. As President, she organised events such as the Hwa Chong Asia-Pacific Youth Leaders Summit (APYLS), backed by her fellow councillors whom she valued highly. She puts her success down to sheer perseverance and, more importantly, the support of her friends and teachers (chief among them Ms. Sophie Bobillier, her council mentor). She will read Medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS.
Audrie Foo Audrie served as both a councillor and the President of the Students’ National Education Committee. Her commitment to serving the student body was seen in her decision to prioritise service to her peers. She gave up Chinese Dance, one of her greatest passions, and dropped a H3 subject, neither of which were small sacrifices. Nevertheless, she flourished, organising many school events while doing well enough academically to receive offers from top UK universities. She will read Medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. Her never-say-die attitude, she says, was inspired by a teacher from Nanyang Girls’ High, who came back from an illness-induced hiatus in her career to carry on teaching.

Panorama had the pleasure of interviewing Professor Vladimir Voevodsky, a distinguished Fields Medalist and Professor Douglas D. Osheroff, an eminent Physicist and Nobel Laureate.

Professor Vladimir Voevodsky is a Russian-American mathematician who attended Moscow State University and Harvard University. In 2002, Professor Voevodsky won a Fields Medal for developing a homotopy theory for algebraic varieties and formulating motivic cohomology. Currently, he is a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. “The real thing happens between the students” was how Professor Vladimir Voevodsky summed up the International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) 2013. Professor Voevodsky quipped that “[the Nobel laureates and I] are here to kind of keep you entertained”, but added seriously that the “interactions between the students” are at the heart of the ISYF. The professor further lauded the ISYF as an interesting idea and an excellent platform which allows students to discuss ideas with one another and develop a network of future collaborators. He pointed out that although “mathematicians do their work individually for the most part, [they] interact a lot and sometimes [they] cooperate”. Personally, he has a circle of friends whom he consults whenever he encounters problems in areas that are not his expertise. Such collaborative efforts are vital in shaping the landscape of Mathematics research in the future. 这期间，靠近食堂的走廊上立起了感恩展览板，让同 学们随心所欲地贴上便利贴，写出感谢的话语。四大育 人学团也分别负责不同的任务，例如：配合教师节，阿波 罗育人学团和阿特密思育人学团的学生分别向全体教师 赠送了自制的环保袋和可口的珍珠奶茶。阿波罗育人学团 心思细腻的学生更访问了学校的清洁员工，并制作成一部 短片，让学生加深对他们工作性质的了解和表达谢意。

Humanities Programme, HCMAS is an intellectually engaging conference that provides students the platform to discuss pertinent issues of our region. Additionally, HCMAS also gives students opportunities to engage in meaningful dialogue, forge friendships, and interact with 82 participants from different Secondary Schools. It was held at the SALT Centre in HCI. Rather than pitting delegates against one another in a rigorous, competitive conference, the primary goal of MAS is to educate amateur “MAS-ers� with an understanding of Summit procedures, introduce them to various concerns within the ASEAN community, and learn diplomacy and politics first hand. Through four days of intensive debates and discussions, participants are taught how to debate, collaborate, and write papers to resolve real-life transnational situations of concern. During the conference, participants wrapped their heads around various ASEAN concerns such as the environmental costs of the dam construction on the Mekong River, the protection of Rohingya refugees, and the dispute over the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.

Wu Chin Ying, a delegate from Raffles Girls School, said that MAS gave her a better understanding of the key issues in ASEAN and the “complexities involved while taking into account each country’s needs and interests.” At the same time, delegates learnt to collaborate and share their ideas. Ryan Neo from Greenridge Secondary School found that participants were “able to form allies with other countries, create joint declarations and speak up for them.” Outside the seriousness of being a diplomat in a MAS conference, participants were also able to forge invaluable friendships with delegates from other schools, and everyone got to see each other’s quirky side. What was most heartening at the end of the day, however, was seeing the passion to continue learning and improving as displayed by many of the participants this year. We wish the delegates all the best, and hope to see them next year at HCMAS again!

It is not every day that one’s Principal plays table-tennis in front of the entire cohort at Assembly. But then again, “Sports for All” is a daring venture to shape Hwa Chong’s sporting culture. “Sports for All” is a new initiative by HCI’s Physical Education Department in 2012 to encourage Hwa Chongians to be more active in sports. Led by Mr Ken Toh, the school is equipping students with basic skills in table tennis, and inculcating a passion in sports. Taking the lead, the school’s Deputy Principals have demonstrated their considerable skills during Assembly. Mr Toh said, “Table tennis is chosen as the pilot initiative because it is a simple and fun game to play and pick up. Students can enjoy playing table tennis while in their school uniforms.” It is not all just fun and games, of course. Last year, the inaugural Inter-Class Table Tennis Championship was held for Secondary One students who faced off in a series of engaging table tennis matches during the Combined Sports Meet. Also, the spirit of learning to help others is formed when the stronger players coach the weaker players. Yinn Ray (2I1) said that he enjoys “Sports for All” as he “not only get to have fun and keep fit, but also learn to forge strong bonds with (his) friends”. This shows that “Sports for All” is promoting a healthy sports culture within the school. Ultimately, “Sports for All” may not discover the next Feng Tianwei, but more importantly, it will certainly ingrain the love for sport and table tennis in Hwa Chongians for years to come.

For most students, November would be relaxing as it signalled the start of the end-of-year school holidays – a time for some much-needed rest after a hectic school year. It was definitely not the case for me and five other schoolmates. Immediately after our examinations, we began preparing for the World Mathematics Team Competition (WMTC).

After intensive training sessions in Singapore and Shanghai, our entourage, consisting of twelve students and two teachers, flew to Beijing, where the competition would be held. The six of us from HCI formed three teams – Tin Jun Hao (3A2) and myself in the first, Natanael Wijaya (3S1) and Ho Jie Feng (3O2) in the second, and Goh Hong Pei and Bryan Wang (2I3) making up the third. This competition featured a novel relay round, apart from the usual team and individual rounds. This round required the first person to solve one problem, derive an answer that provided a clue to the second question, allowing the next person to solve it. Putting in a valiant effort, we completed two out of the three tasks.

In the team component, we had to solve as many questions as possible in 40 minutes. Despite our different approaches to certain questions, we slowly learnt to cooperate and trust each other, allowing us to complete the task successfully. Finally, we had the individual round. Relying on our individual

we
had
to
solve
complex
Mathematics equations, using every bit of knowledge that we had gained from our many practices and trainings over the past months. Ultimately, all our efforts paid off. Our contingent won 4 silver and 2 bronze medals in the individual round! This was made possible by the following people, whom we register our heartfelt gratitude: firstly, our parents, for being there for us; Mr. Zong Lixing and Mrs. Ooi Teong Lin for the endless stream of support and training materials; Dr. Hon Chiew Weng (Principal) and Mr. Ng Seaw Choon (Dean / Student Development) for giving us this opportunity; as well as Ms. Irene Lee and Mrs. May Chen for constantly giving us encouragement and providing a listening ear whenever we needed it. We will continue to work hard to qualify for the next WMTC! 自强不息!

At 17, few would be as well-travelled as Joshua Ian Lim (13S7H), whose extensive trips overseas in the past 6 months alone have spanned many nations from Southeast Asia to Europe. Yet, his exploits were not for leisure, as Joshua competes as a formidable national fencer. While adept with various weapons, his specialty is the foil. A force to be reckoned with in the fencing arena, he is the first Singaporean to win a record six gold medals at the Southeast Asian Fencing Federation (SEAFF) Championships and was placed 8th in the Under-17 category during the 2012 World Cadet Fencing Championships in Moscow. Since his overseas competitions take him away from school for weeks at a time, Joshua admits that it has been difficult to juggle both his academic and sporting commitments. Nevertheless, he invests his all in both, even waking up at the crack of dawn in Moscow to complete his schoolwork. To him, there are similarities in the approaches towards fencing and studying. He cautions about the two extremes of self-deprecation and overconfidence in both competitions and examinations.

Furthermore, he believes that overcoming fear is pivotal for self-improvement. Sharing his personal experience about his bouts with European combatants in his first international competition, he believes that he achieved his current standard through self-motivation and sheer hard work. Joshua hopes that the fencing community in Hwa Chong and

Singapore will continue to thrive. After his team proposed improvements to the school management, they were elated at HCI’s generous support and improved fencing facilities within the school. His friend, Lee Dao Ming (13S63), shared that Joshua is “an ordinary guy who is extraordinary at fencing”. Joshua laughs and agrees only to the former. He refutes the term “extraordinary” because he believes that anyone can be a champion. Well beyond his years, Joshua leaves us with advice for all the budding fencers and his peers, saying that “Success only comes through diligence, commitment and passion.”

Esmond credits the AEP with providing him the “practical and technical skills” to work with, and helping him to “build his

confidence through meticulous practice”. The AEP has also guided him in organizing his thoughts and translating them into an appropriate artistic medium. Esmond sums up his AEP journey as having helped him gradually mature and create more sophisticated artworks. How does the Hwa Chong AEP differ from those of other schools? Miss Grace Ong (Lecturer / Art Elective Programme) shares that in HCI, Art is taken at both the H2 and H3 levels. The rationale is that AEP students are considered forerunners of their generation in Art, and are thus required to delve further into the philosophy behind Art. The Art Department has also given students opportunities to attend workshops providing students a valuable platform to learn from established artists, exchange ideas and gain inspiration. Esmond also showed us the other works he has embarked on, including a series of portraits of family members and friends, as well as his first foray into installation art, “Building Nothing in the Air”. He explained that “the project was primarily inspired by the painting “Just Let Me Sleep”. With this, I aimed to explore a more literal representation of the euphoria of a temporary death.” “The installation explores the state of ascending into the realm of the unconscious where the psyche loses its affiliation with reality. The final artwork is composed of a realistic human sculpture sleeping in a bed with pillows seemingly floating in mid-air above it. A surreal atmosphere is created with the intention of expressing the transition from consciousness to slumber,” said Esmond. Hwa Chong eagerly anticipates more thought-provoking art pieces from this talented student and encourages him on his creative journey.

我们每周都有华文戏剧课，这是我们最 期待的一堂课，因为每次都为我们带来不 同程度的惊喜：绕口令、寓言改编、诗词朗 诵、情境对话、故事编讲、作品鉴赏、剧本 写作、小品表演等等。这些活动不仅丰富了 我们的华文学习，还让我们学到了很多其它 技能。
例如在即兴对话练习中，两位同学要在 没有事先准备的情况下，临时演出老师给的 题目，如 “下雨了”、“我是推销员”、“你 走吧”等, 必须演得生动有趣，三分钟内不能 出现冷场。 这不仅锻炼了我们的演技，也刺 激了我们的思维，激起我们的创造力。

Hwa Chong’s Community Involvement Programmes (CIP) are excellent opportunities for experiential learning, emotional growth, expression of empathy towards the community and self-reflection. Here is an account of the efforts by HCI’s four High School Consortia over these two years.
Aphelion 1
The Aphelion Consortium and the South-East Community Development Council began a dynamic collaboration in 2011 on the Community

Laboratory Programme (CLP). It aimed to nurture students to be empathetic community leaders. Students learnt about the roles of a CDC and the assistance provided through legal clinics, interviews with the needy and home visits. In “Project Refurb 2012” with Tung Ling Community Services, students refurbished the homes of senior citizens by putting up curtains, changing old light bulbs and replacing broken furniture. The seniors also enjoyed a special treat - a half-day tour to Gardens By The Bay. The Tembusu Fiesta, organised with the Tembusu Senior Activity Centre in late 2012, was a carnival to get more elderly living in the Eunos

iSpark In 2013, under the guidance of the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC),

the iSpark Consortium organised a Chinese New Year Food Drive. The gifts of food items came flooding in within days. Class Management Committees collected food from their classes in huge packages. Parents generously donated large amounts of rice and tins of canned food, and offered their time to transport them. In just three weeks, the iSpark Space transformed
itself
from
an
ordinary
classroom into “a comfortable fort with edible fortifications�, as the iCouncillors affectionately called it. On 4th and 5th February 2013, the student organising team delivered the food packages to four CDAC Centres and distributed the items, greeting each recipient with two oranges and a friendly smile. underprivileged families in Ulu Pandan. The programme involves Ortus members providing weekly tuition and character guidance coaching to Primary 5 students. Academic tutoring is largely centred round English and Mathematics for these students to develop sufficient competency to excel in the PSLE. To accomplish this, tutors first conduct a series of diagnostic tests to determine the existing level of subject competency. Tutors can then customize worksheets to suit the individual needs of each student.

It provides opportunities for ProEd student mentors to spend quality time with Primary 1 schoolchildren from low-income households to strengthen the children’s literacy and numerical foundation, develop their personal and interpersonal skills, inculcate good values and broaden their knowledge of the world. In this programme, a group of Sec 2 ProEdians play “Big Brothers” to selected Primary 1 students from Westwood Primary School, coaching them in Reading and Mathematics skills, playing games and bringing them out for excursions. The programme is held every Tuesday during the school term and 16 ProEdians are present at any one session on a rotational basis. A ProEdian “Big Brother” is entrusted with two primary school children. This pilot programme will be pitched to the MOE for implementation at the national level, in the hope of benefitting more children throughout the country.

Service Learning with a Difference By Eunice Kok 12S71 ART!iculture, a pun on “Architecture” and also a fusion of “Art” and “Culture”, was a Service Learning (SL) initiative by Grace Ng (11S71) and Tan Jia Yi (11S7G). The project fostered an aesthetic appreciation for Singaporean architecture amongst Singaporeans.

We had students ranging from those in kindergartens to junior colleges participating in them. In future, we could expand the scope by exploring the buildings beyond the architecture, such as those of its inhabitants and their daily activities, so as to pique the interest of our participants.
P: In what ways was the project fulfilling? I: This project taught us invaluable skills, such as liaising with companies, working with professional organisations, writing reports, and planning and executing events. All of these areas would be greatly beneficial to us in the future.

Hwa Chongians at the Secondary one annual camp 2013 By Sean Lee 3O1, Thung You Xuan 2I3 Aristotle once said that “for the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them”. The Secondary One Annual Camp (SOAC) 2013 was indeed held with this mindset. Organised by the ProEd Council at the Sarimbun Scout Camp, SOAC never fails to provide a learning platform for the freshmen. It was a rite of passage for over 400 new students, overseen by 60
seniors (facilitators
and organizers). Class bonding activities included the classic waterbomb contest and hill climbing. Tang Han Shin (1A4), said, “Even if we do not manage to have a good result in the end, it does not matter. We learn from our every mistake, and try our best. We became more considerate about others and worked as a team. Gradually, we understood different people’s needs and respected them. Growing as one class, we helped each other.” Through the cheering and games, the freshmen become part of the Hwa Chong family. It is an identity that SOAC has permanently imparted to them.

Han Shin also commented that “From the very start, we inherit the spirit through living and learning as a Hwa Chongian, and that will be carried on by us. This is the strength that bonds everyone in the school through thick and thin, and the same pride in each student’s heart.” SOAC 2013 is not only a learning experience for participants but also for the student organizers. Through facilitating this camp, they received valuable lessons from this process. Choo Ying Jie (2I1) made the observation that “It was challenging getting the students’ attention because they seemed to be reluctant initially. However, once we showed them that we were sharing their experiences, they became more willing and even displayed initiative in cooperating during discussions.” See Yong Song (3B1) reflected on improvements that could be made at next year’s SOAC. The event could revolve around a theme and the freshmen could be given some sort of motivating element to complete all the activities to the best of their abilities. A points system and various themed games could also be introduced. As the chapter is closed for this year, it is time to look forward to a better SOAC as Hwa Chong welcomes the next batch of Secondary One students in 2014.

2012年12月，华中高中部华乐团组织了一次音乐与民 俗的交流之旅。14日凌晨3时许，我们一行48人在满怀期待
向导的带领下，我们参观了繁华喧嚣的宜兰夜市，进一步加 深彼此之间的友谊。
中飞到了宝岛，准备和当地学校的华乐团及其他音乐团体进 行深度交流，并亲身体验台湾的风土民情。这次的行程只有

走进不丹，雄伟壮观的山岭映入眼 帘，五彩斑斓的“风马旗”在微风中缓 缓飞扬，给独特的自然风光增添浓厚的 异国情调。我们不禁感叹景色之迷人， 而令我们印象更为深刻的是挂在每一 个不丹人脸上那发自内心的温暖满足 的笑容。
在首都廷布，不丹研究中心的主席 为我们详细介绍由不丹前国王提出的发 展模式：追求经济增长虽重要，但不应 以牺牲生活品质和世代珍重的文化传统 作为代价。

所谓“读万卷书不如行万里路”，诚如 带队的麦克•怀德老师所说：“这趟旅程意 义非凡，因为不丹与新加坡的风土人情有天 渊之别，同学们在接触截然不同文化的同时 也开拓了视野。”能够通过学习之旅环游不 丹，让我们收获良多，回味无穷。不丹是一 个淳朴的美丽国度，是地球人心灵的故乡。 在繁忙的都市生活中，我们不妨时时提醒自 己多欣赏身旁的美丽，或许你就会发现：原 来平凡中的幸福，就是最大的福气。

温暖热情的台湾 ——台湾南山中学交流侧记 郭雍杰 中四双文化二班 华侨中学自从1993年就与台湾的南山中学结为兄弟 学校，每年互派师生进行交流，十九年过去了，两校师生 的感情益发深厚。
去年年底，我们师生一行人飞往台北。虽说之前一直 在“面簿”上跟三个月前来华中交流的台湾同学保持联 络，我们还是很期待能够和这些伙伴们重逢，也很期待南 山中学为我们安排的活动。
1 来台的第一天，我们各自去交流伙伴们的家。我一 开始还有点紧张，后来发现，交流伙伴的家庭对我非常 好，和我交谈时亲切自然，让我感受到宾至如归的温暖。
接下来几天，我们参观了台湾的著名景点、体验了台 湾的风土文化。我们在西门町感受都市的繁华，在野柳欣 赏美丽的大自然，在九族文化村接触台湾原住民的多元文 化，在各大夜市品尝各式各样的街头美食，如珍珠奶茶、 台湾香肠、炸鸡排、蠔煎、肉串等等。在人山人海的夜市 里边吃边走，大概是只在台湾才拥有的独特体验。当然， 夜市不只有吃的，也卖其它各种货品，如服装、文具、电 子产品、玩具以及动漫收藏品，令人目不暇接。
交流活动当然少不了参观南山中学的校园，并

和当地同学一起上课。南山的师生们非常热情地欢 迎与接待我们。除了国文、理化（物理与化学）、 英文等课，我们还参加了童军课程中的野炊比赛， 也在体育课中与大家打羽毛球，玩得十分尽兴。
要回新加坡时，我们都有些不舍。这次的交 流，不仅让我体验不同文化的差异，还给我带来一 份深情的友谊、一段美丽的回忆。台湾的朋友们， 后会有期！

南靖做义工， 难忘的经历 林万杰 中四双文化一班 去年学校年终假期，高中部和中学部的50名学生启程前 往福建南靖县的长教小学做义工。
我们还是勇敢地去尝试。通过接下来几天的不断改良及完 善，我们的教学终于得以顺利进行。长教小学的孩子们都很 热情，几天下来大家朝夕相处，情同兄弟姐妹。在大姐姐、

a chat with Mr.Lim Hwee Leng (Lin Weiliang) President of the Hwa Chong JC Alumni By Benny Cheong, Joy Wong 12S7D
“School is the best time of your life, so make full use of it,” said Mr. Lim Hwee Leng (Lin Weiliang), President of the Hwa Chong JC Alumni, to the current HCI cohort. Mr Lim’s advice is ample evidence of the strong love he has for the school. Recollections of Life as a Hwa Chong Student Mr. Lim has fond memories of his Hwa Chong days. He, alongside his batchmates, experienced a milestone in the school’s history – the move to our present Bukit Timah campus, which he described as his “most memorable moment” in Hwa Chong. “Everyone was in great spirits [after the move],” reminisced Mr. Lim, “we formed a long chain and danced the ‘worm’ dance with our then principal, Mr. Lim Nai Tian leading.” He was struck by how he and his friends worked as one during Hwa Chong’s return, making “the moving itself a great experience”. Another highlight of his JC life was the “great college spirit” and “the camaraderie amongst students [that] made a great impression, and [enabled him to forge] deep and long-lasting friendships.”

The Present - A Distinguished Member of the HCJC Alumni After graduating, Mr. Lim started an Information Technology company, and led it to the stock market. Whilst having a fulfilling career, Mr. Lim had the urge to give back to his alma mater, and spend time doing meaningful things for the school. This motivated him to step forward and join the HCJC Alumni. Today, Mr. Lim has been the key driving force behind fervent efforts to raise funds. Several significant fund-raising events included Charity Golf 2012, the Year-End Dinner cum Auction, and the Celebrity Chef Series. Despite his success, Mr. Lim feels that the HCJC Alumni can do much more, and has “lots of potential” to make a greater impact. He said, “What we need is more people coming forward to serve the alumni and to be a part of it.” Lessons from Our Senior “One should enjoy one’s friends as much as possible during these two precious years,” advises Mr. Lim, “Take time off your studies to form strong bonds, and do well in your exams but don’t fret too much about scoring A’s.” Mr. Lim, through his desire to contribute to the school and society, embodies Hwa Chong’s guiding principle 饮水思源, something we should always keep in mind.

勇敢的 追梦人 访问总理书籍奖及新科工程奖学金得主吴桐学长 柳婷婷 13A12、张珊珊 13A12 为了访问吴桐，我们特地约他在一间连锁咖啡厅见 面。抵达时，只见吴桐学长悠闲地靠在椅子上，脸上带着 微笑，给人亲切的感觉。当我们请他用一个词来形容他的 华中体验时，他毫不犹豫地说道：“回味无穷”。
在华中时，吴桐除了是双文化自理会的副主席，也参 加了 “黄城夜韵”和 Youth Leaders Experiential Programme (YLEP)等活动。这给他许多机会举办一些意义非凡的活 动，如为学生举办讲座及为视障人士举行夏令营。虽然准 备“黄城夜韵”演出的过程备受煎熬，但吴桐并不畏惧艰 辛，因为他由始至终都对戏剧有着一股不可动摇的热爱。 吴桐认为能够与其他同样热爱“黄城夜韵”的朋友一起熬 夜、一起奋斗、是一种享受，也是他在华中最美好的回忆 之一。
