An Elopement Love Story
A fairytale wedding editorial shoot set amidst the rustic charm of The Workshop & Loft in beautiful West Yorkshire...
Esme Whiteside Photography captures the beautiful couple with her natural and cinematic approach and makes sure all the special moments between Luci and Martha are snatched authentically. The two have an amazing connection, and the photographer wanted to go through all the paces of the day, from the getting-ready instances to touching up each other’s makeup, writing vows and celebrating their love together with a ceremony and some romantic dancing glimpses. The story starts in the Workshop & Loft’s event space in Mirfield, primarily a florist’s workshop which transforms beautifully into an intimate wedding space with its cosy atmosphere and rustic beauty. For an intimate celebration, this workshop is the perfect backdrop filled with personality and romantic touches. Its cosy, quirky, twofloor space with stripped floorboards, textured walls and furnishings, antique touches, and beautiful windows for that all-important light create a romantic location for couples to celebrate significant moments together.

Martha stunned in a puff-sleeved, crepe tulle gown by Rue De Seine Bridal, giving fairytale vibes, whilst Luci wore a silk satin wide-legged jumpsuit by Moonchild Bridal, paired with a blazer jacket, and matador hat for that alternative edge. The incredibly talented Emma Cox concocted a winter bouquet with roses, chocolate cosmos and foraged bracken to craft a rustic yet sophisticated floral composition to accompany this gorgeous couple on their special day. The tones of the workshop and the natural lighting pouring in crafted an ethereal ambience and reflected in the posed portraits shot by Esme Whiteside Photography, and to finish the day, the photographer took the couple out to embrace the glorious day and captured the joy and laughter radiating on this blissful occasion.

I'd planned a surprise trip to Iceland for Christmas, but little did I know he was also planning to take me to propose there in March, so my plans hastened his idea and meant he had to rush to get the ring in time! It all went perfectly on the day though, we had been snowmobiling on Iceland's largest glacier and just as we reached the highest point with the setting sun behind us I turned around to see him on one knee. After 7 years it had finally happened in the most breathtaking scenery, so beautiful. We always knew we wanted to get married abroad and France suited our loved ones best. Searching for a venue led to 'The Fairytale Château' popping up and I just knew it was the one! My Nan holidayed every year just around the corner from the venue and when she passed away before the wedding, it felt even more special because it was like she was there with us in her favourite area. We had 60 guests in all, wanting it to be intimate with our closest family and friends with us on site. 45 guests could stay within the château's accommodations, with the rest in hotels so everyone could join us for the weekend activities. After starting planning in 2018, I was so excited getting ready on a day we had been waiting for through two Covid delays. It was a lovely morning getting ready with my bridesmaids, chatting away as we had our hair and makeup done. I felt the nerves start once my dress was on in case I tripped, but I simply couldn't wait to walk down the aisle and see everything come together. I actually found my dress in the first shop I visited! I was initially against a sweetheart neckline but once I tried it on it just felt different. The material, fit and train of the dress all felt really special and I knew it was the one. I then worked with a custom seamstress

to create a custom top half with sleeves like I always wanted. Designing it together was a memorable experience and I have to thank Fross for showing me it was possible to create something unique and Helen for executing my vision perfectly! I also have to thank our planners Beth and Kristian at 'Marry Me in France' for handling everything so we had as stress-free a weekend as possible and our photographers and videographers Emma and James for blending in like guests and capturing everything so beautifully. We had so much fun with you! The most special part of the day would have to be the ceremony itself as we wrote our own vows which made it so personal and emotional. Having our sons walk down the aisle and our eldest being the ring bearer was such a special touch. He still talks about "our wedding in the fairytale castle" a year later and he was only three! When we first met the 'Twilight' film series was huge, so it felt apt to walk down the aisle to the piano version of "A Thousand Years" from the soundtrack. We then went with a more upbeat song to exit the ceremony, "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)", it speaks for itself! "Bambaleo" by The Gypsy Kings was our choice for entering the reception and all our guests did the French tradition of swinging white napkins and it was so fun! When we chose 'At Last' as our first dance song in 2020, we didn't realise how apt it would become when we finally got to celebrate after the delays! One of our best decisions has to be throwing a huge BBQ pool party the day after the celebrations as we shared stories, ate amazing food and spent the day playing pool volleyball, it was a magical memory. I cannot recommend Château de Cazenac enough to couples looking for a space to get married, they had so many spots to hold every part of the wedding. Not to mention the stunning scenery and rooms for guests, the staff really went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. It also lent itself really well to our wedding colours as the greenery and peachy pinks all complemented the stone of the venue. It was simply timeless. Always keeping me on my toes, Jack surprised me with a trip to Santorini for our honeymoon and wrote inside the card I opened on the morning of the wedding, it was the perfect finish to our celebrations.

When picking a date we wanted to find the sweet spot between our eight year anniversary and TJ's parent's wedding anniversary, so the 25th of June 2022 was the date we landed on! You can't beat a June wedding in New York City either. Booking the 620 Loft & Garden was one of the easiest and most seamless vendor experiences ever, it felt too good to be true but it did not disappoint. They were a breath of fresh air to work with and even supplied a list of vendors to help us plan an out-ofstate wedding. Each of our 75 guests was hand-selected and it was the perfect number to be able to say hello and speak with each person, which was really important for us. We have been to weddings that were so large, we couldn’t imagine not being able to say hi to everyone and we wanted to be able to celebrate with each of our guests in a meaningful way. When people say you will know when you find the right dress, they mean it. As soon as I put on the dress, it felt like a hug. It was comforting and unlike any other dress I had tried on, which had to have been 20-25 other dresses from four bridal shops. The one I ended up with was from Love Couture Bridal and was by Anne Barge. It was so comfortable and easy to dance in which was essential for me. The getting ready process was great! You spend the whole day getting pampered with hair, makeup, mimosas and your closest friends and family. We made sure not to get started too early but also with enough time not to feel rushed. The nerves didn’t hit until just before walking down the aisle. I am not one for having all eyes on me, but if there was a day I would be ok with it, my wedding would be the one!

I made the decision to walk myself down the aisle, however, we decided to have TJ meet me halfway and escort me the rest of the way. This was a really special and empowering moment for us both to join together as a couple to become #TheNewDeals. The groomsmen wore black tuxes and the bridesmaids wore black satin dresses to match our black and white colour scheme. COVID caused outrageous delivery dates and supply shortages so it was a challenge to orchestrate everything but we were over the moon with the result. Our best decision was doing everything “our way” which can be really hard to do when there are so many people and suggestions involved. We knew from the beginning we were firm on investing in an amazing venue, delicious food, open bar, and an incredible band. We ultimately went with whatever the two of us felt was most our style and would represent us as a couple best. I actually chose my shoes before my dress, opting for white sandals with a black YSL heel, I'm a huge shoe enthusiast! I wore my shoes as long as I could that day, but had to ditch them after our first dance. I could only wear tennis shoes for two weeks afterwards! We actually stayed in NYC for a few days after the wedding to explore the city some more.

We met through a mutual family friend who I ran into casually while visiting Miami, next thing I know she is handing me her phone with Michel on the other end of the line! We chatted for a bit, made all the more awkward by the eyes and ears of my mum and her friends all on me, but we laughed through it, played it cool and he invited me to go out on the boat with friends in a couple of days. We had chemistry from the start and remained in contact but I was living abroad. I came back, we had a proper first date and were inseperable ever since. Michel proposed in the apartment we live in now whilst it was under construction, it was late night and no lights were fitted yet, but just the two of us in the glow of the moonlight made it so romantic. I have always known I wanted Silvia Tcherassi to design my wedding dress one day, even before I was ever dating anyone! She's a family friend and also from Barranquilla, Colombia. We agreed to design something feminine and delicate, ideal for a wedding day. I also wanted a touch of sexy too, so we opted for the low-back design to show some skin. The dress also had a hint of a blush colour, it was so soft and subtle and absolutely perfect. I also opted for a designer from my hometown for my shoes and went for an Aquazzura design. I admire this designer so much and wearing them on my special day was a tribute to my roots and to Colombian talent. Vacations in Italy were so common for me during my childhood that it felt like the ideal location for my wedding. I wanted to share a bit of the 'La Dolce Vita' lifestyle with my closest friends and family. It was the perfect combination of carbs, wine and dancing!

Thanks to our fantastic wedding planners, Savvy Event Studio, there were no bridezilla moments from me! They were always only a phone call away and really took the time to discuss and choose every little detail with us. They do it with so much love and it really shines through in their work. We had a light and bright venue which we dressed with muted whites and blushes, along with sprays of greenery and gold details to lift the palette. Having trails of fairy lights hanging from the ceiling really set the scene and added a romantic glow to the venue. Everything looked so fantastic! A really sweet moment for me was walking down the aisle to 'Somewhere Only We Know' by Keane as it is a song me and my dad always blast full volume and sing along to in the car. Having it played on the strings was a great choice to fit in with our wedding day and I felt like a princess floating down the aisle towards my true love. When it came to the first dance, we chose something a little different. We danced to 'ADMV' by Maluma and had the composer Vicente Barco as a wedding guest so he kindly sang live for us. The audience simply couldn't take their eyes off this moment, it felt like something out of a movie.

travelled to the shores of Montenegro for an intimate wedding amidst the sea and mounts... Once, early in our relationship, Roman had mentioned that it would be nice to be proposed to in a romantic city. Well, I took that sentiment to heart. The year we went to Paris, I was ready. I had been planning for over 6 months and every day of the trip I carried a black box with me, never knowing when the right moment would come. We made plans one evening to enjoy a picnic by the Eiffel Tower. I really wanted to see the Eiffel Tower illuminated and sparkle at night, which supposedly happens at sunset. We were having some wine and as the light faded, the temperature dropped along with the light, and Roman was ready to leave, but I really wanted to propose and since I couldn’t wait until the light show, I popped the question. I pulled out a tiny box containing cufflinks with a fireworks design on them to symbolize Hanabi, a board game we played on one of our first dates. At this point we’re both emotional, tears are streaming down our faces. Roman easily answered “Yes, I will marry you” – It was a no-brainer, did anyone think I’d say anything other than yes?” We legally married at City Hall in 2019 (on the same day we met), celebrating with parents, extended family and our social circle. But we always hoped for an intimate elopement-style destination wedding for 2020. Unfortunately, COVID-19 struck – grinding to a halt all our carefully laid plans until we were finally able to move forward with the wedding two years later in 2022. I was adamant that Barb had to be the photographer to shoot our wedding, but Barb needed time to travel back home to capture another wedding so we decided to move the festivities a few days forward. We came close though, making it official on June the 12th! Roman wanted our destination to represent three aspects of our union: comfort, resilience, and most importantly symbolize a journey shared together. So we started with the idea of mountains and adventure abroad. After scouting various locations, we came across an image of Montenegro, specifically the Bay

of Kotor, blessed with high mounts with the bay stretched out below and a cute city nestled within. We fell in love – the way the towns are surrounded by mountains, the way the water kisses the land – we knew we found the perfect destination that symbolizes our union. Our wedding planners, The Eventeur understood the assignment and found us Forza Mare, a boutique experience that has 10 individually themed rooms inspired by places across the globe. We love exploring new places and experiencing new cultures and foods and Forza Mare was the perfect base for our guests. Right on the Bay, with incredible views and atmosphere, incredible food and service; it was everything we wanted for our wedding, our guests and ourselves. Even before the pandemic happened, we were looking to have an intimate destination experience. We invited ten of our cherished friends to join us as we committed our lives to each other. It was magical to be able to share our love and journey with our community of friends and family. This wasn’t our first time getting married, we did the legals in Toronto in 2019 and yet the tears would not stop flowing. The first look brought on the waterworks. Emotionally charged vows, queued up more tears and even hiccups! The emotions were overwhelming: joy, love for each other and the strength of our commitment, and the relief of finally being in Kotor and getting married how we always dreamed! I spent months finding a wedding dress that felt right for me. Every time I tried on dresses, I was with a friend or three. Between their opinions, nothing ever felt like me. Then I saw Loversland were going to have Savannah Miller’s Alma dress in store for a weekend. I went in by myself, tried it on and fell in love. It was perfect for a humid summer wedding by the water. I felt beautiful and sexy in something that looked deceptively simple. Roman knew he was going to have a bespoke suit made by Surmesur, he instantly gravitated towards a light purple style they had and accentuated it with white detailing and threading. He already had a floral shirt from Simons that had some blue florals which were a near exact match to pair with the suit so it was a no-brainer. We walked through Old Town of Kotor in our wedding looks with Barb leading us for the highlights and capturing the magical moments. We were being cheered on and it was an unforgettable moment.

Add to the equation that you are marrying abroad, and a few extra layers of worry might surface, but with our helpful guide and wedding experts sharing their insight, you are set up for success! HERE ARE THE MAIN POINTS YOU SHOULD ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND WHEN PLANNING A WEDDING ABROAD: BUDGET-WISE: First and foremost, start with your budget. Planning a wedding abroad could seem like a cheaper option if you are travelling to a destination where costs are lower, but take into account that you might be paying more for travel, transfers, luxury facilities and accommodations. Indeed, planning a destination wedding requires you and your guests to stay a few days abroad, which is something to consider before booking your wedding in another country. Once your budget is confirmed and you have added up the costs, the next step would be to start deciding on your destination. DESTINATION: Choosing your destination has to be both a personal and functional decision. We can all romanticise how magical wedding planning is, but, at times, it comes down to making rational choices. In the long run, all of these thought-through decisions will lead you to the most special of days - which we are sure will feel like the fairytale you’ve always wanted! Have you thought about when in the year you would like to marry? Will it be sunny in your destination of choice? These are all questions you should be considering when booking. If weather is not an issue and you would rather

pick a location based on its sentimental value to you as a couple, think if all your guests can travel there easily. Try looking up flights ahead of time, check the availability of transfers and see if the area caters to your needs. These are all important considerations before you decide on a wedding destination. SUPPLIER NEEDS: When planning your wedding day abroad, something else to reflect on is whether you’d like to rely on local suppliers to help you craft your magical day or if you would rather travel with your own expert crew. There are different elements to consider before settling on one or the other. For starters, we recommend contacting local suppliers, especially a local wedding planner, which might help you breach any language barriers - knowing regional contacts has advantages too! When working with local suppliers, you embrace a more sustainable way of planning and utilising your destination as much as possible. But, for example, if you have already found your dream photographer and bridal designer near home, that doesn’t mean you can’t rely on both. CONFIRM THE DATE: Organising a wedding somewhere afar might require extra months of planning, so we advise
starting early. Without a doubt, it’s easier if you are planning during off-peak time. You can be sure venues are more likely to have space, and prices would also be more affordable. If you are planning, for example, during the busiest season, which will be from the end of spring and the beginning of summer, then you do have to claim your spot in advance, which in many cases could be earlier than a year. Probably the most decisive moment of your wedding planning is booking the wedding venue, once that has been confirmed, the rest will follow. SAVE THE DATE: With 20 or 200 guests, you have to let your guests know with plenty of time when and where your wedding will take place. That’s where your save-the-date cards come in handy. It’s so important that you send these out as soon as you confirm your venue. You don’t have to give away much information, but enough for your guests to start planning their travels. Add your date and venue together with the time the event is starting. Give your guests the main details and let them know when they will be able to hear from you next. Then, ask your guests to confirm their attendance, as you’ll have to start planning based on those numbers.

Then you have to cut a thick slice of your budget to make your dream a reality. Have you ever considered what your wedding style would look like? Do you want a theme to run across your wedding? Then this is where an expert could come in and help you make it happen. The same applies to your wedding photography. Have you ever thought about what you would like your photo album to look like? The memories of your wedding day will be treasured across your photos, so make sure you select the right photographer to represent your style. What kind of wedding are you looking to celebrate? Did you know about the different forms of marriages you could have? Are you planning a religious ceremony or simply an official wedding at the registry? When the guest count is low, you have the opportunity to focus on the details and tailor your day so that every moment is curated and one-of-a-kind. On the other hand, if you plan on hosting a high guest count, you need to cut on the personalisation and count on bulk products and features. Both are just as beautiful, but as a couple you just have to decide what matches your specific needs. Finally, remember, your wedding day is all about you and your partner! Ask the Expert 4. WHERE TO CELEBRATE? You’ve got the country or region, the date options, and your approximate guest count - now, you can search for the ideal venue to say ‘I Do’! Do you want to have on-site accommodation for everyone? For your wedding party? Is there another hotel nearby? Do they have a great plan B option in case of rain? 5. WHO IS MANAGING AND PLANNING? This step may need to creep into the planning earlier if you need help with the venue, but either way, this is a crucial part, especially if there is a language barrier. Make sure you get a planner who speaks the language! They can be based locally, or you could take them with you or neither. Nowadays, as long as they speak the language and have experience in the region, the actual physical location is not an issue. I would highly recommend having someone to support and guide you throughout the process. 6. WHEN TO COMMUNICATE? When should you let your guest list know that you are getting married, but also where and when will it be? Well, the answer is - "As soon as possible!" If you want a good turnout, get those electronic save-the-date cards out! You don’t need to give too much information yet - you won’t have much. However, you can tell them the dates and the venue. That way, they can sort out flights, hotels, and request days off from work, etc. The best way to make sure all your boxes are ticked when planning a destination wedding is to have a planner lead the way. This is an important one - is it where one of you, or both of you are from vs where you live? Or is it that you are both from elsewhere so it will be a destination for all your guests. 2. HOW MANY DAYS AND WHAT DATES? Because people will be flying in from all over, make sure you make it worth their while. Will you be hosting several events over a few days? And, take into account the local seasons, weather and festivities to make it as enjoyable as possible. 3. WHO IS COMING? Are you making it an intimate affair or a big celebration? There is no right or wrong answer - just what feels right for you both. This will determine your venue choice which is probably one of the first decisions you’ll have to make as you start the process of planning your dream wedding affair abroad.
7. WHAT DO YOU INCLUDE OR NOT? This is a question that always comes up with all of my clients who do destination weddings - what is expected to be included and what can we ask people to pay for? This is honestly one that you both need to think about and understand what you are both comfortable with. A common tip that all my couples go for: book out the venue accommodation (you often get it included or at preferential rates), and then create a chart and allocate rooms to people who want to be on site. Offer them the rooms at a really affordable rate, for example, €150 per night per room. That way, you get some money back to reinvest in the wedding that you will all enjoy. 8. LOCAL OR IMPORTED SUPPLIERS? I’m a big believer in supporting local talent, but I’m also realistic and sometimes, some suppliers cannot be sourced locally to the standards that you require. In that case, import. It’s really important that you are confident in your suppliers on the day. And hopefully, these 8 steps will be the start of your journey. To start, we enjoyed a basket of warm crusty bread, dipped in their premium quality olive oil. Choose from the three options: Blend, Drobnica and Coratina, each being a slightly

You can’t beat an Aperol Spritz while relaxing around the fireplace, and that is certainly what I did! During a liqueur tasting session, I was introduced to their homemade Limoncello. I’m not usually the biggest fan of liqueur, however, their signature Limoncello Spritz curated by the talented bartender, was a taste I was more than happy to bring home with me!

Observing the sheer magnitude of this natural landmark at dawn or dusk is a spellbinding experience, and although it has stood silently for millions of years, it still appears to shape-shift in the dancing play of light. Uluru lies at the foundation of the Anangu community, one of the oldest continuing cultures on earth. It has been their place of ritual and the exchange of ancestral philosophies called Tjukurpa (pronounced 'chook-orr-pa') from one generation to the next. These important creation stories flow through the rock physically and spiritually like arteries in a beating heart, and one that visitors can learn a simple version of is called the Mala Story. With the help of groundbreaking technology, Anangu are now sharing it the world in a pioneering new way.

WALKING INTO THE WILDERNESS For over 50,000 years, the Kuku Yalanji people have been the ancestral guardians of this ecological sanctuary in Tropical North Queensland. Their way of life is intrinsically connected to country and sea, so spending time with Aboriginal guides will help you unlock the inner secrets of the rainforest and reef. In their philosophy, flora and fauna are closely entwined with meanings that contribute to the story of the land. With this innate respect for the environment, sustainable principles have been practised here long before it even became a concept. “The rainforest is our supermarket, medicine chest, toolbox and church,” says our brilliant guide, Juan Walker, from Walkabout Cultural Adventures as he rubs iron ore against a wet rock to release minerals used for ceremonial painting, healing wounds and maintaining a healthy diet. This is one of his many fascinating insights into the rainforest’s mind-boggling mix of deadly and life-saving species. One minute we’re shown a poisonous Crab’s eye seed and next we’re tasting the zesty Vitamin C boost from a green ant picked directly from the leaves!
