DAY ONE: SAIL AWAY… Personalise your boat excursion to fit your needs and establish memories that will last a lifetime. To enjoy an intimate time with your significant other, opt for a romantic stay on the private islands. Alternatively, for that extra dose of adventure for those intrepid travellers, have a go at deep-sea fishing and see what you can catch. DAY TWO: THE BAHAMAS FROM BELOW Wake up to an underwater world of tropical coral blankets and sunken shipwrecks with the most prestigious diving operator in New Providence. Stuart Coves has expert experience in PADI courses; day snorkelling trips and even non-swimmers can join the fun on a personal submarine tour. Each excursion offers an extraordinary interaction with the colourful patchwork of Bahamian sea life (stuartcove.com). DAY THREE: A PIRATE’S LIFE Experience “The Golden Age of Piracy” at the Pirates of Nassau Museum. Check out the history of the legendary Bahamian pirates. Then set off to John Watlings Distillery where the awardwinning rums are fermented and distilled from hand-cut, freshly pressed sugar cane molasses. DAY FOUR: THE DOLPHINS OF ATLANTIS Bring your dolphin dreams to life with an unforgettable educational experience at Atlantis Paradise Island. Dolphin Cay is a world-class marine habitat, home to sixteen rescue dolphins. The Ultimate Trainer programme allows you to work closely alongside professional animal trainers, who give you an invaluable insight into the conservation and rehabilitation of this beautiful aquatic species (atlantisbahamas.com).

DAY FIVE: MARKET FIESTA Home to the finest Bahamian arts and crafts, Straw Market on Bay street, is decked with homemade crafts and one-ofa-kind conch-shell jewellery and wooden carvings fashioned by local artisans. One of the many stalls is sure to house the perfect authentic souvenir to remind you of your beautiful honeymoon. DAY SIX: PARTING THE BLUE SEAS The Glass Window Bridge of Eleuthera is nature’s true marvel. It is one of few places where you can compare the royal blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the calm turquoise waves of the Exuma Sound. Join the Freedom Tours bus ride to catch the glimpse of the breath-taking panoramic views and create eternal memories with your loved one. DAY SEVEN: PIGS IN PARADISE Slung like pearls in a pristine island chain, in The Exumas it is easy to appreciate the luxury of life’s simplicities. Splash around in the shallows with Big Major Cay’s famous swimming pigs, whose settlement is a mystery still unknown. All your creature comforts will be satisfied as you join them for a once in a lifetime experience (harboursafaris.com).

Tulip

Fever Inspired by the Deborah Moggach novel and recent film, this breathtaking shoot fuses rustic beauty with impeccable opulence Photography by Fiona Kelly Photography

The story of Tulip Fever focuses on a love triangle between a Dutch Nobleman, his wife, and the artist commissioned to paint her portrait at the height of the Tulip flower boom in Holland

www.dwha.co.uk

29

A still from the movie featured Alicia Vikander’s character in a royal blue dress with a white lace collar. This inspired the colour palette of the shoot

Lots of Delft blue accessories were sourced and used in unusual ways

The chosen palette was Delft blue and white, as it is quintessentially Dutch. Elizabeth’s vision was for the florals to be clean, crisp and contemporary, but with an organic feel

In the 17th-century, when Tulip Fever was set, tulips were traded as precious commodities in Holland. A single bulb could go for as much as £300,000!

F

or the royal wedding theme, I would choose a sophisticated, white palette with a hint of blush and creamy yellow. It would have just enough contrast to give the overall feel some depth, but not too much colour as it distracts from the elegance. For the details, I think the royal family crest should be a huge part of the celebration. Especially with Meghan being a calligrapher, this will probably be incorporated into their stationery. IF THE COUPLE WASN’T GETTING MARRIED AT WINDSOR CASTLE, I would recommend a gorgeous English horse stable! Horses are such a huge part of the royal family that I think the rolling hills and views of a farm would make the most stunning wedding. For their honeymoon, they should go somewhere they have never been and take in the local sights and food. MY TOP TIP TO MEGHAN AND HARRY is to enjoy the day and enjoy each other. There is so much pressure on the couple in the public eye that it’s easy to forget the marriage is much more important than the wedding day. It will go by in the blink of an eye and no matter what happens on the day of, who approves or who doesn’t, remember your love for each other at this special point of your lives!

Royal Wedding Inspiration from

A

t LLG Events, we are always pushing ourselves to think creatively and outside the box. When we first thought about a royal wedding concept, we immediately wondered how we could make this different. So, we decided to throw a royal wedding photoshoot here in New York City. From our initial design meeting with Ceci New York and Tantawan Bloom, we started thinking of royal colours and predictions of what could be the next trendsetting, timeless designs of 2018. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be defining bridal fashion and design trends for the next generation of couples. TO BEGIN OUR INSPIRATION FOR THE SHOOT, we looked back at the royal family bloodline, researching their attire, jewels and traditions. We also began researching Meghan and noticed her love for peonies. We knew this had to be a major focal in the floral design. Tantawan Bloom included fuschia orchids, white cherry blossoms, and a gold tree structure along with blush and ivory roses. We continued to incorporate rich colours, such as ultraviolet, pantone’s colour of the year, and then added muted whites, bronze and gold.

The luxury wedding design firm outline how impeccable a royal wedding in New York would be, as showcased by this styled shoot they pulled together

INCORPORATING BLACK as an accent colour was our modern approach to the design. We added this into the black lacquer boxes of custom cake tins, the outer envelopes of the invitations, the menus, and throughout the place cards. We kept the invitation classic, mimicking the style Prince William and Kate used for their wedding. The cake, designed by Ron Ben Israel, incorporated black and gold, which carried over from the florals and stationery to the place settings. WE WANTED TO LEAVE SOME TRADITIONAL ELEMENTS in the shoot, which is why we chose Lotte New York Palace Hotel. We tried to find a setting that mimicked the interior opulence of Windsor Castle and the classic elegance that England is known for. As we could not recreate Harry’s military uniform, we chose a classic custom-made morning suit provided by Alton Lane. For the bride, we went for an elegant lace dress designed by Romona Keveza. It covered the model’s shoulders and had a detachable train with deep backline, which would complement Meghan’s signature hairstyle perfectly. For the reception dress, we went with Dennis Basso’s creation of soft pink and tons of sparkle. The dresses were sourced and prepared by The Stylish Bride, and we would recommend every bride to have their own personal stylist on the wedding day! AFTER AN ENORMOUS CELEBRATION, we wouldn’t be surprised if the couple ended up in Gozo. A small, discrete, romantic island off the coast of Malta, it is private, unknown and untouched by many tourists. Overall, our advice for the royal couple is to choose the right team of vendors. A team that not only works hard, but are also the right fit amongst each other. When everyone is thinking as a collective, the possibilities are endless.

ROYAL WEDDING

An interview with

Jennifer Goberdhan Signature Weddings

Owner of the Trinidad and Tobago-based wedding planning agency, Jennifer Goberdhan discusses her recommendations for the royal wedding

M

eghan and Harry certainly do not fit the mould of the classic royals in personality or style. Therefore, personalisation is key! Apart from the obligations necessitated by protocols, they must infuse their charm into the celebration, décor and wedding couture. They must make the food, entertainment and florals their own style! FOR THEIR THEME, I would choose a neutral palette of whites, ivory and pinks, paired with luxe gold and sparkling silver. Crystals will make the ideal accents, as the wedding is taking place in Spring. For the flowers, they should use a combination of towering arrangements, flower-decked gold candelabras, floral-dripped crystal chandeliers and compote arrangements in crystal urns. This will create an energised reception space and would certainly infuse a modern-day appeal that complements the couple. Florals in season is always a good idea as the quality of the blooms will be at their finest. CLASSIC WEDDING ELEMENTS would be represented in the linen choices, glasses, cutlery and dinner plates. The place settings could be enhanced with gold-rimmed charger plates, acrylic table numbers and name cards, bespoke monogrammed linen napkins and crystal votives. A mirrored bar is a great contemporary feature that would take the cocktail hour to the next level. The couple can opt for a classic tiered wedding cake, adorned with modern hand-painted elements and accented by sugar florals.

IF THE COUPLE WASN’T GETTING MARRIED AT WINDSOR CASTLE, I would recommend Hampton Court Castle in Herefordshire with its outstanding formal gardens. It’s water features, a maze, flowers and incredible forestry would provide the backdrop for spectacularly beautiful photographs. This castle has a wealth of historic character and has many options for a fairy tale wedding. For a luxury honeymoon, Ja Manafuru in The Maldives, with its gorgeous beach bungalow and lots of privacy, would be perfect. The bungalows are nestled among tropical greenery just steps away from a postcard white sand beach and breathtaking views. The resort boasts privacy, a foodie paradise, water sports and a calming spa. The couple can do as little or as much as they like. Alternatively, since Meghan loves Tuscan wine, maybe a short stopover in Tuscany at a private villa may be an option before jetting off to The Maldives!

“ They must infuse

their charm into the celebration, décor and wedding couture ”

AT WINDSOR CASTLE, a dress that is fashion-forward but still conveys fairy tale romance, would be very appropriate for the venue. A Monique Lhullier creation would be my design choice. On the other hand, Meghan may well break all the royal rules and wear something more feminine and tastefully seductive with a lot of romantic details. Additionally, for a second dress, she may err on the side of sleek and modern, which would reflect her present style.

An interview with

Sharon Sacks

Internationally sought after with an impressive clientele list, Sacks Productions creates extraordinary events for some of the world’s elite. DWHA speaks to founder Sharon Sacks to hear her opinions on the royal wedding

I

f I were planning the royal wedding, one of the first things I would do is research Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to determine their day-to-day style as well as their likes and dislikes. I love in person meetings with my couples, as during this time a bond is built. These intimate conversations create a trust that allows my team and I to authentically represent our clients in all elements of the wedding. It is at that time the planning begins and we work with the couple to determine what will be woven into their wedding. Once the scope of the project has been determined, I would then reach out to the world’s finest vendors to assist in executing their monumental evening. Renderings and models of the event would also be prepared to present to the future Princess and Prince Harry! Once this is approved, the building begins.

“ I would choose a

neutral palette by candlelight, adorned with romantic details ” EACH WEDDING IS its own work of art. Working with royalty includes attention to protocol and media management. Royal weddings are viewed by the world with much anticipation. With that being said, we do not lose sight of the couple desires. Our goal is to create very intimate and private moments for Meghan and Prince Harry throughout their very public wedding day. WHEN A BRIDE AND GROOM are so in love, the less distraction from them, the better. For the reception design, I would choose a neutral palette lit by candlelight, adorned with romantic details. It would be a perfect backdrop for their ear-to-ear smiles and loving gazes. For the flowers, I would choose peonies, “The Queen of the Flower”. They are not only a perfect fit, but also Meghan’s favourite! I’d utilise voluminous blooms at varying stages coupled with at least one sprig of myrtle, to uphold the royal tradition.

ROYAL WEDDING

“ It will be a

honeymoon never to be forgotten ” FOR MEGHAN’S DRESS, I predict it will be bespoke, and created with coutelier Ralph & Russo as the designer! Their designs are perfect for our future Princess. I also think it would be incredible to have Ed Sheeran perform “Perfect” alongside Andrea Bocelli for the couple’s first dance — it would be so dreamy! IF THE COUPLE WASN’T GETTING MARRIED AT WINDSOR CASTLE, I would recommend a traditional English garden ceremony in London, with a modern twist. I imagine Princess Meghan and Prince Harry surrounded by fresh, vivid blooms and elegant décor. For example, Blenheim Palace would be magical. For their honeymoon, I would suggest The Maldives, as is it so private and romantic. The beaches and chilled vibes would be an incredible gift after their whirlwind celebration. For the second leg of the trip, I imagine them visiting the beauty of Africa and connecting to the magnificent landscapes and purity of the animals. “THEIR WEDDING IS SHARED WITH THE WORLD, and the world feels a part of it.” My first advice to the royal couple would be to carve out moments during the wedding that are intimate and just for the two of them. I believe Meghan and Harry are a perfect couple. A wedding is a dream of love and connection. When they find themselves at the altar, I recommend they take a moment to look back at the guests celebrating their union. Additionally, I would suggest Meghan to engage with her dress designer to embroider a special message to her husband in the lining of her gown that would be for his eyes only!

An interview with

Castleton Events Darla Walker, Creative Director and Principal Planner of Castleton Events, brings her expert knowledge to her predictions on the royal wedding

J

ust like I tell any of my brides, I would advise Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to enjoy the planning experience. Planning a wedding tends to be a stressful process, but finding the right planner will turn it into an experience they can look back on with good feelings. You’re creating a memory; be sure to work with the people who will make it a happy one.

IF THE COUPLE WEREN’T GETTING MARRIED AT WINDSOR CASTLE, I would recommend the vineyards at Castleton Farms. Alternatively, as I know how much they both love New York, I would suggest one of the beautiful old churches in the city. As I believe Meghan will go for a very natural look, I would choose neutral tones for a clean colour palette of champagne with some hints of green shades. As they are getting married in May, and I love peony and ranunculus combinations at that time of year, I would choose these for their floral arrangements. I would go with very traditional, softer florals — something with texture to it. Queen Anne’s lace, cabbage roses and champagne roses would be nice too.

“ Be sure to work with

the people who will make it a happy [memory] ”

I THINK MEGHAN will easily be able to add simple, contemporary touches to what is sure to be a very traditional ceremony. I believe we will see it in what she chooses for her attendants, in the floral arrangements, and in her own look for the day. For her attire, she may do something A-line or a sheath-style gown. Both would complement her beautiful figure very well. FOR THE ROYAL COUPLE’S HONEYMOON, I believe they will go somewhere tropical and private. However, if I were marrying a prince, I would get on that royal yacht and cruise around for a while!

“ I would choose neutral tones for a clean colour palette ”

Sumptuous Events Paris

T

oday, Sumptuous Events is among the most upscale and stylish production companies in Europe. We produce prestigious events, and our specialty is weddings. We have organised unique, tailor-made weddings all over the world, including New York, Phuket and Marrakesh. My personal mission is to make clients happy by creating beauty and perfection for them. The greatest joy is seeing the hard work and devotion pay off. Our secret to success is our belief that a great event depends on the divine energy and love wrapped into it. That is why I have always poured my heart and soul into every single production. I can claim that I have developed a visionary state of mind, with my French dramatic skills, some bold touches, and craziness. For my whole production and me, it is a real honour to say a few words about the upcoming royal wedding.

IT WOULD BE EXTRAORDINARY TO ORGANISE the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan. From the start, I would make sure to give them an incredible white glove treatment and show them my respect. For the first meeting, I would fly to the UK with my production team for the most refined Sumptuous tea time at Buckingham Palace. With approval from the Royal Family, I would have the tea served differently than normal. I would have sourced, tasted, and selected everything myself, from the fresh pastries and rare tea, to the refined tablescape of beautiful flowers. I would try to keep the meeting funny and down to earth, as I assume it can be tiring for them to be constantly put on a pedestal. But, before meeting Harry and Meghan in person, I would do extensive research regarding royal etiquette, and most of all, about Meghan’s taste. What colour does she love the most? What vision could she have? I would take the opportunity to present the team and invite each member to explain his or her role in the production. I would give Harry and Meghan a feeling of safety and confidence about their choice to plan the celebration in Paris.

DWHA || march / april

@adagionstudio and @royalmonceauparis

Jean Charles Vaneck of the elite wedding planner service, details how himself and his team would make the royal wedding so special

“ My personal

mission is to make clients happy by creating beauty and perfection for them”

I HAVE ALWAYS TREATED ALL PEOPLE around me with lots of respect, regardless of their background. Moreover, I expect to be treated as an equal, especially if my client feels my devotion towards my work and the incredible energy I invest to make their day so unique. I believe Prince Harry has been raised with those values. Most importantly, his mother was one of most incredible human beings. Princess Diana was a true example of class and an inspiration for all of us. What would be different to other weddings I organise is that I would have to follow background checks and security scanning. However, it would not be completely new for us. As our company has grown, we have started to work more and more with celebrity clients. I would ensure that everything provided is top notch, and beyond anyone’s expectations. I have the faith that my team and I have capacity, energy, and creativity to fulfill all their wishes. MOST WEDDING DESIGNERS would suggest the royal couple to opt for a very soft palette. However, I would first ask Meghan what she likes, encouraging her to follow her vision without thinking too much what would be considered appropriate. We have established a signature style with rich colours and textured fabrics, following the steps of famous interior designer Jacques Garcia. We are still developing our universe, as it takes time, but we never look too much at the work of the competition, in order not to limit ourselves.

ROYAL WEDDING

“ I have always poured my heart and

Daria Lorman

Adagion Studios

soul into every single production ”

“ Meghan’s sophisticated beauty goes for the best modern cut ”

IF I WERE BEING GIVEN AN UNLIMITED BUDGET for floral décor, I would transform a magnificent ballroom into a magical garden with the most vivid and extraordinary blossoms. The smell would be so persistent; it would invite guests to immerse themselves in a remote land of freedom and peace. I would create a stream to go through the room, with a calming noise and big enough for animation. I can envision Harry and Meghan arriving on a little wooden boat during the dinner, followed by white swans and peacocks. My vision includes floral walls from floor to roof, with hanging floral chandeliers, fairy lights, and candles. As a table centrepiece, I would imagine a composition that evolves during the dinner. It would start with spring season of reasonable size, but the composition would keep growing as the dinner progresses. There would be a team of floral waiters to add new elements to the composition as the guests enjoy each meal. Modern technology, such as videotaping, can make this concept unique and ground-breaking. THE ENTIRE WORLD WILL BE LOOKING at Prince Harry and Meghan during this wedding. Meghan is a gorgeous and inspiring woman, becoming an inspiration for many young girls who dream of becoming a princess. Thus, I would remind her that she has the power and influence to send important messages to younger generations. I would insist not to display too much show-off, but make it clear that a significant amount has been given to charity. Anything extravagant should be kept private and not shown publicly. At the church, I would suggest a duet of Sam Smith and Adele, as they both are incredibly talented and represent British spirit. In my view, the royal couple should pay honour to Harry’s dear mother, Diana, with some subtle touches.

FOR MEGHAN’S DRESS, I would spend an entire week with Meghan and her stylist to go through her wardrobes and understand which designer would make her stand out the most. I would invite several top designers to sketch the royal dream gown. My choice would be Dolce & Gabbana and Elie Saab, as they are famous for emphasizing the beauty of strong women with values and character. In my opinion, Meghan’s sophisticated beauty goes for the best modern cut, nothing extravagant, with an endless royal train, and elegant white fabric. For the church, I imagine her with a sublet veil, an incredible up do hairstyle and diamond earrings. IF THE ROYAL FAMILY HAS CHOSEN ME to design this wedding, they would already expect me to suggest them to break the bridal code, as it has been our landmark since the early days of Sumptuous Events. Although we love and highly appreciate tradition and etiquettes, it is essential to be part of the world evolution, and, to please ourselves when it comes to choices. I would encourage the royal family to have fun, and try not to overthink of a ‘royal’ production, but more to take it as a contemporary 2018 wedding. I would not suggest anything that might be imagined as ‘classic’ such as a white horse carriage. Prince Harry is known for his military service and involvement in numerous charitable causes, which I personally highly admire. He has followed the path of his mother, and I know he will continue this journey with his wife to be.

IF THE COUPLE WASN’T GETTING MARRIED AT WINDSOR CASTLE, I would recommend Versailles Castle and would expect the French President to welcome the royal family with me. The private reception would be organised in the Hall of Mirrors — a venue full of grace and with much history. I imagine the royal family would want to have a public mass at Notre Dame de Paris. I already imagine how flamboyant it would be. It would bring lots of joy to the Parisians and the Mayor of Paris as well! Also, I would hold a more modern, outside ceremony too, by the Latona’s fountain, by The Metamorphoses by Ovide. It illustrates the story of Latona, the mother of Apollo and Diana, protecting her children from the insults of the peasants of Lycia and pleading with Jupiter to revenge her. It is also a symbol of the personal history of Prince Harry and Prince William. I would recommend the royal couple to stay at the Royal Monceau Palace, which is one of the most iconic and luxurious palaces in Paris. PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN had their first official date in staggering Botswana, known for its lily-flecked deltas, spectacular wildlife, and rivers collapsing in sands of the Kalahari deserts. They stayed in a beautiful Meno a Kwena tented camp, between the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the Okavango Delta. As they are both adventurous, free spirits, and adore wildlife, I would propose a honeymoon safari in Kenya. I am sure they would enjoy observing elephants bathing in waterholes, scenic flights over the local salt pans and Meerkat safaris. ESSENTIALLY, PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN are going to celebrate love and happiness with their friends and families. It is a celebration of a profound love and an extraordinary moment. My most important tip would be to not forget that it is the most

beautiful day of their lives. Therefore, they should live in the present moment and listen to their hearts and intuition when making choices. I can only imagine how challenging it can be living their lives as they are constantly under the scrutiny of the world. Because of that, I would also plan an intimate celebration with a short guest list to let them enjoy their day with only the closest people. My advice would be to keep everything very secret, low key, and extremely simple. If I were to plan this, I wouldn’t share any single information about the location, menu, or even the floral design. It would be a very subtle and romantic event, where their love would embrace the minimal production. I have always known that grace comes from within and from above. I wish them both a long, happy and healthy life and a successful wedding. Lastly, I wish they shall keep inspiring all of us to shine the beauty we have inside. Pierre Sage

To Have and To Hold With over 20 years of wedding planning experience, the Bermuda-based wedding planning agency is committed to creating individual events with attention to detail. We speak to To Have and To Hold to discover how they would plan the royal wedding

I

f Meghan and Harry weren’t getting married at Windsor Castle, I would recommend to them an elegant ceremony in a beautiful garden setting. Gorgeous floral arrangements and lots of candles would surround the couple and their guests. The colour palette would be a sophisticated mix of violet, lavender, cream and ivory. THE FLOWERS would include lots of Peonies, English roses and Hydrangeas, along with single stem blooms in vintage bottles and gold vessels. This would add more drama and elegance to the tables, standing out in the reception. They would be of various heights and placed on the tables with gold mercury glass candles. I PREDICT THAT MEGHAN’S DRESS will be sleek with lots of movement. I believe that she will be very true to her style. To bring some contemporary elements to the special day, Meghan could be walked down the aisle by both her mother and father, or alternatively, just her mother. However, I think she should keep the tradition of wearing something old and something blue.

“ Floral arrangements and lots of candles would surround the couple ”

FOR THEIR HONEYMOON, the couple should jet off to Bermuda of course! Imagine the cool breeze blowing the lush palms and flowers, creating a relaxing natural song. Fall in love with the stunning picturesque beaches of soft sands and unique landscapes, and listen to the sound of the ocean gently rolling into the shore. There would be no stress, just the two of them in one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. MEGHAN AND HARRY’S WEDDING DAY is going to be extra busy because of who they are. My top tip to them is to just relax and have fun. It’s important for them to enjoy their special day, just like everyone else!

An interview with

Greek Dream Planners Anna Wilson, founder of Greek Dream Planners, discusses her royal wedding predictions, and explains why Greece is the ideal location for an intimate ceremony and private honeymoon

F

irst of all, I would like to congratulate Meghan and Harry on their engagement. On the special day, my top tip for them is to relax, be themselves and enjoy every second of it. As a Greek destination wedding planner, I would recommend a private villa for the couple if they weren’t getting married at Windsor Castle. At the villa, they could combine a luxurious stay with their private wedding ceremony and reception on the property’s land. Increasingly more royal and celebrity couples are choosing to have an intimate and private wedding. For example, a wedding in a villa on Mykonos, that has access by a helicopter or yacht, would be ideal for all the royal family to attend. I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THE ROYAL COUPLE’S fashion style in general, so according to the colours they both look stunning in, I would create a palette based on their tastes. Overall, I would recommend a colour palette of white, royal blue and gold, as an all time classic combination. As they are both modern and very stylish, I would choose clean lines with a luxurious vibe. I would also take inspiration from the shape of her square diamond engagement ring by using geometrically shaped centrepiece decorations with single or two-coloured flower arrangements that follow the style trends of a gorgeous 2018 wedding.

“ Increasingly more royal and celebrity couples are choosing to have an intimate and private wedding ”

DWHA || march / april

I BELIEVE WE WILL SEE MEGHAN in a modern princess look with a straight-line minimal style dress with no lace. She has proven to be a fan of the minimalist style, with her wardrobe choices in the past featuring single colours and straight, clean lines. FOR THEIR HONEYMOON, I would suggest two places. The first is a geographical masterpiece and well known as ‘the capital of destination weddings’. It is of course Santorini, where they could stay in a beautiful private villa overlooking the caldera. Alternatively, a more private location that is dear to the royal family’s hearts is the island of Corfu. Again, they can hire a villa here within the forests of the north, overlooking the clear blue turquoise colour of the Ionian Sea.

An interview with

Melanie Fiander

Melanie Fiander of the Bermuda based Fiander Foto, describes how she would photographer the royal wedding if honoured with the task

T

he love shared between a couple on their wedding day is the main focal point for any wedding photographer. For me, it would be important to not only capture the love between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but also the love they share with their family and friends. This can be accomplished by photographing all the different stages of their day. I would start by capturing Harry, Meghan, and their bridal party getting ready for the ceremony, along with details of the dress, the groom’s attire, their shoes, accessories, and rings. The getting ready stage is a great opportunity to photograph touching moments of the bride and groom’s family or friends helping them, with either fastening a button on the back of her dress, or adjusting the cufflinks on the Prince’s shirt. THE ARRIVAL OF PRINCE HARRY, his family, and the couple’s wedding guests at St. George’s Chapel would yield fabulous photographs of everyone coming together to celebrate this historic occasion. A key photograph will be Meghan walking down the aisle, as well as Prince Harry’s reaction to his bride. Harry and Meghan may opt for a traditional early morning ceremony, which would be followed by their first public appearance as husband and wife, a luncheon reception, a private dinner, and perhaps fireworks to top off the night. Alongside capturing these events, I would take their bridal portraits approximately 30 minutes before sunset, when

74

DWHA || march / april

“ The getting ready

stage is a great opportunity to photograph touching moments” the natural light is soft and golden. I would also recommend planning an epic “exit” shot, when the newly weds exit the Chapel. Whether the royal couple exits St. George’s Chapel under the release of white doves or rose petals being tossed, this could be a nice moment to capture as they take their first steps as husband and wife. I PHOTOGRAPH WEDDINGS with a candid eye and I also take traditional portraits, which allows me to deliver a nice variety of images to the bride and groom. I enjoy working with prime lenses because they create a sharper image, as opposed to a zoom lens. For the most part, I work under natural light and would describe my lighting style as soft. In terms of composition, the use of line and shape also plays a big part in my images. I tend to create a design with a simple colour palette, so the bride and groom are the main focal points. I would use these same techniques for capturing Harry and Meghan’s big day.

ROYAL WEDDING

SOMETIMES IT CAN BE awkward having your photo taken, particularly on your wedding day. For me to capture a couple’s personality and the emotions shared between them, it helps when they feel comfortable in front of my lens. Although Harry and Meghan are not strangers to the camera, they will still be a young couple in love experiencing butterflies on their wedding day. To help set them at ease during their bridal portrait session, I would use a game called “Show Me Your You”. Essentially, I have a stack of cards with different scenarios for the couple to act out. The scenarios range from reenacting scenes from movies to asking one person to make the other laugh by only moving their eyebrows, hands, or sharing their best dance moves. It provides a bit of humour during the shoot, allowing the couple to take their minds off the camera. WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION, Meghan has very classy taste. She recently wore a stunning Alexander McQueen suit, which is the same fashion brand that the Duchess of Cambridge wore on her wedding day. Perhaps Ms. Markle will also opt for an Alexander McQueen design? On the other hand, there has been talk of Inbal Dror submitting designs for the wedding dress. Regardless of what fashion brand Meghan chooses, I’m sure her dress will be elegant and timeless. WITH A NUMBER OF HARRY’S RELATIVES having wed at Windsor Castle, I think it’s great that the couple are carrying on the tradition. Although, if the couple were to choose a different location, I would recommend two locations. The first is the Coral Beach Club in Bermuda, which is situated right on the ocean and boasts traditional Bermudian Architecture. The second would be Ca’Marcello, a private Venetian Villa in the Veneto region of Italy. The villa is an excellent example of Palladian style architecture and is very well maintained. I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding at Ca’Marcello this past summer and the venue was breath-taking.

“ I’m sure her

dress will be timeless and elegant ” My recommendation for a honeymoon location would be my island home of Bermuda! For those who love to spend time on or in the water, our island offers pink sandy beaches, clear blue and turquoise waters, and numerous dive and scuba sites among shipwrecks and coral reefs. Bermuda is situated atop a mid-ocean volcanic seamount; the surrounding waters also provide unique deep-sea fishing opportunities! With Bermuda being a British Overseas Territory, the island’s nine parishes are steeped in rich history and culture dating back to 1609. PHOTOGRAPHING A WEDDING is truly a collaboration between the photographer, the couple, and the wedding planner(s). When the day-of schedule is well thought out and everyone is in sync, that is when the photographic magic happens! My top tip for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would be to simply allow for plenty of time during the day so that each special moment may be photographed and enjoyed.

White Light Events Jamaica With nearly 25 years of experience combined as a team, White Light Events Jamaica delivers all that is needed for a truly flawless destination wedding. Here they discuss how beautiful a royal wedding or honeymoon would be in the paradise of Jamaica

T

rident Castle in Portland, Jamaica would be perfect for Meghan and Harry if they weren’t getting married at Windsor Castle. It has an air of exclusivity and more importantly, it looks a lot like Frogmore House! This venue would allow a deck into the ocean where the couple could get married in the Caribbean Sea with the castle as a backdrop. We can visualise Meghan descending the steps that are adorned in romantic flower garlands. As she walks onto the plexiglass deck, the loving Caribbean sun enhances her beauty and Prince Harry swoons at the sight of his angelic bride. OVERALL, WE WOULD RECOMMEND A THEME based on Meghan’s home interior, which is contemporary. We would suggest a white, blush, peach and chrome colour palette with a variety of textures and subtle hints of greenery. For the flowers, they should opt for a soft romantic, pulled from a garden look. The bouquet would contain a nice assortment of flowers and foliage, looking more hand-tied than carefully crafted. It would consist of peonies, roses, lily of the valley (in honour of Princess Diana) and the traditional sprig of myrtle.

“ The couple

could get married in the Caribbean Sea ”

WE THINK THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND HARDWARE — chairs, tables and flatware — can be on the modern side, with smooth, straight lines of white and mirrors, instead of heavy golds. Crystal chandeliers would bridge the gap between the modern and classic. The florals and centrepieces would be the classic element, mixed in with candles of various sizes. MEGHAN HAS A WHIMSICAL, yet classic taste towards wedding dresses, but as we know, a royal wedding has to lean more towards the traditional side. Caroline Herrera or Maggie Sottero would

78

DWHA || march / april

“ Crystal chandeliers

would bridge the gap between the modern and the classic ” be the safe options for this. However, Ralph & Russo would be our wild card favourite. They have the ability to turn a classic design into a statement piece, which Meghan could pull off well. MEGHAN’S LOVE OF WINE makes us want to say that a private island off the Amalfi Coast would be idyllic for the honeymoon, but since we are from an island of paradise, we would have to say Jamaica! We have so many hideaways, private lagoons, and secluded villas with private beaches, which would allow the couple to enjoy their honeymoon undisturbed from prying eyes. OUR TOP TIP for the couple would be to have their own personal rooms, decorated to their style, where they don’t have to share together and can kick off their shoes and simply be. We are sure a life in the public eye can erode the amount of time that actually spend alone, so we would definitely advise that quality time together is just as important as personal space.

An interview with

Diana Da Ros Event planner, Diana Da Ros uses her international experience and elegant creativity to organise spectacular weddings and honeymoons. With the help of various experts in Italy, Diana shares her predictions and advice for Meghan and Harry’s wedding

T

he perfect colour palette for the royal wedding would be white and ivory with a touch of blue — a well-known royal colour. The blue can also be used on the wedding stationery. Royal tradition has a specific etiquette for invitations, but a modern day Princess should be able to choose a small detail, like a dash of colour. Additionally, it would be lovely for the couple to reinterpret the timeless tradition of English teatime. Taking the classic designs of English teacups, they could adapt them to create contemporary versions. MEGHAN’S WEDDING DRESS should be elegant, important and made with classic prestigious fabrics. However, it can be contemporary too. For example, blue hand-painted English roses could give the dress a lace effect in some significant points, such as the collar and shoulder. With bridal designer, Mrs Chiara Vitale, we have created special dresses for the wedding. For the ceremony, a bustier dress in duchess fabric with a wide skirt and tail, covered by a frock coat. A light veil completes the look, where the end resumes this work of painting and embroidery. We’ve also created a dress for the reception — a blue dress of silk crépon with a mix of bias draping in the back, and a long tail! FOR THE CAKE, our proposal prepared by cake designer Mami Louise, is four-tiered. It would be decorated with toile de jouy prints on sugar sheets, a silver airbrush colour, and coordinated with wafer paper flowers. It would of course be a banana cake, as that’s Meghan and Harry’s favourite flavour! WITH ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ITALIAN FLOWER DESIGNERS, Alberto Menegardi, we realised a special bouquet for Meghan. It includes myrtle (for the royal

80

couple to reinterpret the timeless tradition of English teatime” tradition), lily of the valley, carnation of poets, hyacinth, English roses, buttercups, thyme, branched roses, jasmine, asparagine, bouvardia, wild fennel, alstroemeria, eucharis, wax flower and helleborus. IF THE ROYAL COUPLE HAD CHOSEN ITALY for their wedding, I would suggest a historic and romantic location, such as Castello degli Angeli. Situated near Bergamo, this venue has a beautiful park and spectacular nave of a deconsecrated church. It would be perfect for the royal wedding due to the possibility of ensuring maximum privacy. For the religious ceremony, I would absolutely suggest Bergamo’s Cathedral for its historical relevance and amazing beauty. For their honeymoon, I would recommend a very remote place to visit, such as the Afar Triangle in East Africa. The region is thought by some paleontologists to be the cradle of the evolution of humans. After this, I would suggest a relaxing week in Mozambico. MY TOP TIP for the couple is to be themselves. People all over the world love their breaking of traditional choices, so their day should be a contemporary and up-to-date celebration. I suggest that day continue making choices with their heart. British and American traditions can coexist in a fabulous, romantic and memorable royal setting.

or the royal wedding theme, I believe soft cream and rose colours would go perfectly with Meghan’s style and look. I visualise her in a mermaid or A-line dress with lace — something that is romantic and modern, but not over the top. Having an amazing videographer is definitely something they should consider. Not only is it so much fun, but it also keeps the emotions of the day shared forever. During the ceremony, I suggest playing songs that tell something personal of their very own love story. I think that here, you can easily put your own stamp on the wedding. AS AN ALTERNATIVE VENUE TO WINDSOR CASTLE, I would recommend a Swiss royal wedding, holding it in the beautiful Engadine Valley. If there was a choice of dates, I would definitely suggest the winter season of course! It would provide the perfect scenery for a fairy tale. We would start the bachelor party at the famous Dracula Club in St. Moritz. It is the place to party, and I even met a European royal there myself! After the ceremony and a horse and carriage ride, they would hold their reception in Le Grand Hall of Badrutt’s Palace. It has high ceilings and a beautiful panorama over the lake of St. Moritz, where horse races and a polo tournament take place in winter. THIS WOULD BE FOLLOWED BY A FESTIVE DINNER at Hotel Kronenhof, built in 1848 and known as “The Grande Dame” of the hotels in The Engadine. In fact, Sergio, the Head Waiter, serves all his guests as if they were in fact Kings and Queens! On the following day, a Sunday brunch in one of the

AFTER THE WEDDING, I would suggest spending more time in the beautiful Hotel Kronenhof. It has one of the finest spa facilities in the world, and is in a superb location in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The days can be spent skiing, hiking, riding in a horse and carriage, and eating delicious dinners. For the second part of their honeymoon, I would choose Zermatt, a popular village with the world’s most photographed mountain, the famous Matterhorn. It is car-free and offers spectacular slopes, various restaurants and excellent hotels. OVERALL, MY TOP TIP FOR THE ROYAL COUPLE is to make sure they have some private moments during the day. This will allow them to share their feelings of love and capture the precious moments (weddingexcellence.ch).

Litu Wedding Consultants Kimmie Brown from the multi-award winning consultancy discusses her predictions, recommendations and advice to the royal couple for the wedding of their dreams

S

cotland has an abundance of fabulous venues, from castle estates and private homes to palaces. There are many obvious choices for the Royal Family to have a wedding at some Scottish residences, such as Glamis Castle, the childhood home of the Queen Mother; Scone Palace, where the kings of Scotland were crowned; Holyrood Palace, the official Scottish residence of the Monarch; Balmoral, private property of the Royal family. But there are also beautiful secluded castles up in the glens of Scotland where you have total privacy and seclusion with true highland hospitality. For their honeymoon, I think Kenya would be a good choice. Prince Harry holds it dear to his heart and there are some wonderful holiday and honeymoon locations there. I WOULD SUGGEST A PINK AND CREAM COLOUR PALETTE to the royal couple, still very popular for late spring and early summer weddings. However, purple is the new trend and a royal colour, so this would work well also. For the flowers, peonies in May never fail alongside ranunculus — it’s the perfect match. I am sure the flowers will be beautiful full arrangements. Undoubtedly, there will be lots of classic elegant touches to the royal wedding, and I am sure Meghan and Prince Harry will encompass their own touches. Bringing a mix of American themes with British, Meghan may theme her tables differently, or have some fun elements with favours. I am sure the evening will have some different party features, after all they are both young and want to have a fun-filled, memorable day.

DWHA || march / april

I THINK MEGHAN’S DRESS will be an elegant mermaid style, perhaps with beaded lace appliques covering the shoulders and arms. Meghan has a wonderful petite figure that would look stunning in this, or a similar style. I think Meghan could also showcase a Canadian designer for her wedding gown, and then change for the evening using a British designer. OVERALL, MY TOP TIP is that they should put together a day full of their wishes and aspects they have both talked about. It’s a day for the rest of their lives in their memories. I understand there will be many traditions and protocols, but they should include special touches akin to them both and their respective traditions.

Perfect Weddings Malta Patricia Falzon of Perfect Wedding Malta, gives her expert opinion on the royal wedding, including the best venues for royalty across the Maltese Islands

F

or the royal wedding, I believe a rose gold colour palette would illuminate Meghan’s beautiful skin tone. The pink-tinted metal requires no adornment and is regal on its own. Another colour I believe would flatter the future princess is blush pink. It is symbolic, celebrating the heralds of spring during May. Cherry blossom trees would be in bloom and would work harmoniously, wrapping up the country in a pink haze and a gentle fragrance. I envision Meghan herself in a simple, elegant traditional ball gown with a touch of shimmer. THE HEAD TABLE would make a stylish statement, adorned with a fresh floral runner and dotted with candles. Each circular guest table would have elegant tall crystal candelabras, topped with a cloud of peonies and roses. An ingenious combination of blooms in different nuances would create an ombre effect. Clean lines with lots of floral arrangements and whimsical lighting would give the venue a fairy tale effect. MY TOP TIP FOR HARRY AND MEGHAN is to take it easy and enjoy their day! The moment is ephemeral, so take it all in and savour each moment. This is their day and it is something they will look back on throughout their life together. IF THE COUPLE WASN’T GETTING MARRIED AT WINDSOR CASTLE, I would recommend the Maltese islands! Rich in Biblical and nautical history, Malta has a close connection to the British Empire, once having been reigned by it. The islands are perfectly accentuated with exotic beaches, sprawling vineyards, glorious gardens and prestigious palaces and villas. Here are my top choices: Villa Bologna, Attard: The perfectly manicured gardens connect themselves to the historic San Anton Gardens, which house the President’s Palace. Villa Bologna offers storybook settings for the royal couple, from century-old orange orchards to

“ Wrapping up the country in a pink haze and a gentle fragrance ”

water fountains, a sunken pond and pathways hemmed with foliage and sweet scented blooms (villabologna.com). Xara Lodge, Rabat: From the opulence of the ballroom to the quaint pool setting, this venue possesses sophistication. The elite lodge is part of the Relais & Chateaux association and has hosted royalty, including Prince Charles and Camilla. Xara also boasts a panoramic view of Malta’s picturesque countryside and the historic bastions (xaralodge.com). Palazzo Parisio and Gardens, Naxxar: This historical palace boasts unparalleled grandeur and ornate décor, overlooking blooming trees and manicured gardens. Palazzo Parisio is laced with sheer opulence, fit for royalty (palazzoparisio.com). Limestone Heritage: Offering a dramatic backdrop of crystal clear waterfalls, the Limestone Heritage is undeniably an oasis of tranquility. The sprawling estate is situated amidst perfectly landscaped gardens, creeping vines and limestone walls. Draped with the charm of Maltese culture, this venue is the perfect convivial venue for the royal couple (limestoneheritage.com). The Saluting Battery, Valletta: Located at the most prominent vantage points of Malta, the Saluting Battery offers breathtaking vistas of the grand harbour. Shrouded by history, the colonnade gardens are armoured with artillery. The azure backdrop would offer the royals a perfect retreat for a waterfront wedding under the stars (salutingbattery.com). ROYAL WEDDING

An interview with

Joyce Barbour Joyce Barbour of Be Our Guest Wedding & Event Planner, based in Montana, USA, gives her opinions on the upcoming royal wedding

Venue I would plan a rustic outdoor Montana wedding at one of our many all-inclusive ranches. The ceremony would be in a meadow with a mountain backdrop, and guests would be seated on long wooden benches. Ms. Markle would arrive in a horse drawn carriage and the décor would include aspects of Montana’s Native American culture. The reception would be held under a tent, with long wooden tables and bench seating. The food would be a mix of American outdoor barbeque dishes with some English cuisine favorites!

An interview with

Laura D’Ambrosio Based in Italy, +39 Lux specialises in luxury travel. Laura D’Ambrosio tells of her predictions for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding

Venue If we were to choose an Italian city for this fairy tale, we can only think of Venice, unique in its beauty. Venice has remained timeless, a city without wheels, a metropolis of waterways, nostalgia, richness and romance. It is an extraordinary feast of heart-thumping, soul-stirring art, food and landscapes.

Colour Palette

Colour Palette

For a May wedding, I would choose a colour palette of Plumeria, Custom Tangerine, Sugar and Custom Peach.

A minimal chic style for the reception at Windsor Castle with white flowers and soft tones. There is always something magical about royal weddings that projects us into a fairy tale dimension, where everything is possible and dreams come true.

Floral Arrangements Tulips, Anemone, Ranunculus, Peonies and Roses. For the filler, I would incorporate some Dusty Miller, Heather and Bells of Ireland.

Dress A mermaid style gown of satin and lace with a high lace Victorian style collar, long sleeves, pearl buttons down the back, and a long lace panel train.

Traditions

Cake It’s been reported that Meghan and Harry are planning on having a banana cake. Harry is said to love bananas, and Meghan shared a fruit-themed clue on her Instagram when the two were first dating.

Dress

For the classic traditions, I would bring back a penny in the bride’s shoe, hiding a charm in the wedding cake and the sweetness of the bride writing her groom a letter the night before the wedding. On the contemporary side, I love the use of lots of greenery at the chapel and reception, copper décor for warmth, and unique escort cards.

Something very different to Kate Middleton’s dress. We would like to see Meghan in a modern gown with simple lines and fewer frills, designed by Narciso Rodriguez. Rodriguez designed Jackie Kennedy’s wedding dress and we think this will be the inspiration for Meghan. We imagine Meghan in a sophisticated and sexy dress, representing a perfect match between classic and contemporary.

Honeymoon

Honeymoon

To go with the Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s love of the outdoors, I would pick Taveuni, Fiji to enjoy the wonderful beaches, lush jungles, waterfalls and abundant wildlife.

We can only dream about Africa for them, where the couple shared many romantic moments. Perhaps they will travel to Botswana, where the engagement diamond came from and where the fairy tale began.

Top Tips Take deep breaths and just enjoy planning this amazing day. Be true to yourselves — a strong marriage starts with trust and listening to each other.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS IN THE BAHAMAS

Top tips

Enjoy the day and document the overall experience, as it goes by so quickly. When planning, stick to the budget, plan with ample time, do your research and shop online

We chose Nassau, Bahamas

as our wedding destination because Cecilia is originally from the Bahamas and it was conveniently located for both of our family and friends in the Bahamas and in the United States. We chose St. Anselm’s Roman Catholic Church as our venue because it is Cecilia’s home church in The Bahamas. Additionally, the Holy Trinity Activities Centre is a beautiful venue that was able to accommodate our large party of over 400 guests! Overall, we established a budget and made an effort to keep costs down by doing extensive research, networking with friends and family who were able to assist, and shopping online. The bride’s dress was purchased at the Bridal Suite in Baltimore, Maryland. The decision was easy because Cecilia and her cousin had previously visited a few other stores and knew this dress was “the one” from the moment they saw it. Our favourite colour is blue, so this inspired the colour palette. It was so perfect for a summer wedding in The Bahamas. Therez McKenzie did an amazing job with the floral and table arrangements. She decorated the venue with the colours of the wedding, with attractive centrepieces to match. Our guests stayed at various hotels and resorts, including the British Colonial Hilton, Comfort Suites, Atlantis, Melia, and Garden of Eden. A few guests also found great Airbnb options. This was easy to organise by reserving group blocks and having the guests make individual reservations. Some of the challenges of organising a wedding included coordinating the planning whilst living in the United States; finding that some vendors were already booked; staying within the budget and limiting the guest list.

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN THAILAND

Dreamy décor

Flowers and candles were added for a romantic look that was classic yet modern

Dane and I are from

two different continents, extremely far from one another. We wanted to find a mid-point for both sides of our families — and since we live in Asia, it was ideal for us to have our wedding here. Thailand was the best place because of its natural beauty. It truly is a paradise. Before choosing our venues, we flew to Phuket to meet our planners, The Wedding Bliss Thailand, to make sure we found the best venue for us. We visited a few places and the last was Jia and Shanti at Jivana Villas. Both villas were breath-taking — a gorgeous beachside setting. We decided to rent both villas and have our wedding at Jia. I bought my wedding dress from Rosa Clará in Miami. I always knew that I wanted to wear a Spanish designer’s wedding dress to represent my roots. I went to several bridal shops in Miami that sold high-end Spanish designers. Rosa Clará was the last shop that I went to and as soon as I tried on my wedding dress, I immediately fell in love with it. It was the prefect dress for my body shape and Latina background. For my beauty looks, I let my hair and makeup stylist do whatever he thought looked good on me. I gave him more or less of an idea, and he took it from there. The most challenging thing about organising our wedding was agreeing on the aspects that we both wanted and what to spend money on. It was a stressful process, but well worth it. We had such a helpful wedding planner and the whole team was absolutely amazing.

Rosa’s top tips

Be organised! Draw up a timetable with all the tasks to do and chip away at it each month. Arranging a “get to know each other” event before the wedding was also great for all the guests to mingle

Shelly-Ann Fung-King and Troy King discovered their perfect wedding venue in Jamaica, where they enjoyed a culture-filled celebration Photography by Denise Mason Photography

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN JAMAICA

Top tips

Never settle for choices solely based on family and friends. However, do make sure your guests are well taken care of. Always choose what makes you happiest, or else you endure unnecessary stress. Also, hiring the right team to handle the details can allow you to enjoy your day, so you can spend the time with your guests

There are several factors

that contributed to choosing Jamaica as our wedding location, but it was with our family and friends in mind that sealed the deal. We both love the food and rich heritage, plus Jamaica is like Texas in terms of it’s fun-loving people. We wanted the location that sparked our love interest, a place where the majority of our friends and family have never been, but was still easily accessible by all. We knew we wanted a private and unique venue that could facilitate a seamless flow, from welcome cocktails to the reception. Borghinvilla was not only a stunning property, but also catered to our every need. Each component of the wedding event felt like a new location, from poolside welcome cocktails to the beach “I do’s.” For a previous function, I worked with Saint T and found them to be very professional and extremely talented, so I chose them to decorate our venue. Like all the other vendors we chose, they were very detailed and passionate about “love” and their craft. Saint T followed through with our chic rustic, yet tastefully elegant theme with café lights, burlap, wood and lace accents to create a unique island charm. My dress was made by Uzuri International, who generally makes the dresses for Ms. Jamaica Universe. They have the ability to personalise each design to best suit my styling preference of clean, dramatic silhouettes. Accented with lace, feathers and crystals, each fabric was handpicked for my personality. I had many trial sessions for my hair and makeup and while all were good, I wanted someone who connected with me and who cared about me as an individual and not just another bride. When I met with Rashel, she asked questions that made me feel genuine care and comfort, so I chose her before I saw her work. In fact, the first time I saw her work was my wedding day!

Whilst the guests danced, the team transformed the beach within minutes to a starlit wondrous delight where the skies lit up with a colourful burst of fireworks

Your Introduction to Bahamian Culture... NEW PROVIDENCE Bursting with the flavour, sounds and eclectic colours of the Caribbean, New Providence, home to the country’s capital, Nassau, is the most populous of the hundreds of confettilike isles that sprinkle the western corner of the Atlantic Ocean. Rich histories of treasure chests and pirate coves still linger long after The Bahamas’ first island governor banished them from the shores. Follow the fortunes of voyages long ago, to rediscover the tropical medallion of New Providence in archipelagic paradise. THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE PARTY Seventy percent of the total Bahamian population resides in Nassau, the capital, which gives a unique community feel. Locals welcome visitors like new neighbours and will happily show you the epitome of island living. Vibrant costumes and a rhythmic mix of goatskin drums, whistles and horn blowers will enthral your senses at their soulful Junkanoo festivals, especially at Boxing Day and New Year’s Day events. Step into the street and keep up with the dancing feet of the jubilant parade that celebrates the freedom of slaves, and the vivacious spirit of The Bahamas. The energy continues at the traditional Straw Market on Bay Street, a lively trading hub for authentic shopping. You can’t help but grasp onto a new zest for life in this bustling hive of activity, as the friendly vendors light-heartedly barter with passers-by. Be sure to pick up bespoke handcrafted wares by native artisans to take home with you — from hand-woven straw hats and intricate wood carvings to the polished shell conch jewellery that will forever call you back to these calming coastlines.

The Perfect Roman Holiday… Inspired by Audrey Hepburn

ITALY Tourism in Italy has hit record heights, but instead of reaching for that trusty old guidebook, see Rome’s awe-inspiring art, history and culture. Step into the world of the timeless Hollywood classic… words by Claire Bloomfield

R

eleased in 1953, romantic comedy Roman Holiday saw the much-loved Audrey Hepburn cast in her first major starring film role and won three Oscars. Hepburn, then just 24-years-old, played the role of a princess who escapes the palace to spend a glorious day in Rome with journalist, Joe. He realises he has landed the scoop of his career before inevitably falling head over heels for Hepburn.

Gelato on the Spanish Steps

In one of the movie’s most iconic scenes, Joe and Princess Ann are reunited at the Piazza di Spagna as she tucks into a delicious gelato treat and reveals she has ‘runaway from school’. Gelateria Giolitti is just a short stroll away, but unfortunately, tourists can no longer eat or drink at the famed 18th-century Spanish Steps immortalised by Roman Holiday — and breaking the rules can land you a hefty fine.

Zip around on a Vespa

Audrey Hepburn causes chaos as she attempts to weave through the traffic, markets and cafes on a Vespa, with her co-star clinging on behind. Whilst taking in Rome’s most famous sights at speed, they whizz by the iconic oval amphitheatre, the Colosseum. But you would be advised to take your time in exploring this Ancient Roman site. Avoid the queues and purchase your fast-track tickets in advance (coopculture.it).

DWHA || march / april

Have a Hair makeover by the Trevi Fountain

After catching a glimpse of an Italian lady leaving the hair salon with a classy short hairstyle, Hepburn heads into Via della Stamperia 85 for her very own makeover. Although the hair salon is now a popular clothes boutique, it’s set alongside the Trevi Fountain, arguably the most famous and beautiful fountain in all of Rome.

Joe Bradley’s Apartment

The apartment’s interior and its traditional spiral staircase were all filmed in a studio, but the outside features of Joe Bradley’s apartment and quaint courtyard are all accessible through a cobbled passageway from Via Margutta 51.

Getting Married

There are over 400 charming churches across Rome to exchange your vows, but the 10th century Santa Francesca Romana and the baroque church Santi Nereo e Achilleo should both be on your shortlist. Unsurprisingly, due to the huge number of requests from couples all over the world, waiting lists at churches can sometimes be particularly long. It’s also worth remembering that the more conservative Catholic churches in Rome require shoulders to be covered, so you may need to rethink that strapless bridal gown. If you want your dream Italian wedding to become a reality, look no further than Italy Wedding Packages. They specialise in destination weddings, ensuring all arrangements are in place. It couldn’t be simpler! (italyweddingpackages.com)

DESTINATIONS

Our 3 top tips 1 Take a train ride to florence

The train from Rome to Florence is one of Italy’s busiest routes so you are advised to book your ticket in advance and arrive well ahead of your scheduled departure time. The journey takes just 1.5 hours so this is the perfect chance to tick two magical Italian destinations off your bucket list (italiarail.com).

2 Be careful when you travel

Did you know?

The world’s oldest Vespa that featured in Roman Holiday was sold at auction in March 2017 for a staggering €191,000.

The temperatures in Rome can soar to over 30 degrees Celsius in the summer so look to schedule your trip between March and May or September to October to escape both the heat and the intense crowds. It will also still be warm enough to enjoy Rome Cavalieri’s outdoor pool and terraces during these windows.

3.

Enjoy a moonlit movie night

A movie under the stars, preferably with an enormous gelato in hand, is the perfect date night option and one Audrey Hepburn would certainly approve of. Rome’s openair cinemas show everything from Italian classics to contemporary international films and although there are numerous options to choose from, Isola del Cinema is our top pick (isoladelcinema.com).

Where to stay The Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria

Take me to church

You can even have your wedding ceremony at St Peter’s Basilica – the world’s largest church

Whether you want to bathe like a Roman emperor or dine in Rome’s only 3-Michelin-star restaurant, The Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria should be at the top of your honeymoon wish list. Rome Cavalieri opened its doors in 1963, and has gained an enviable reputation as one of the city’s leading hotels. The luxurious property is situated in a 15-acre private Mediterranean park, on top of Rome’s highest hill and boasts breath-taking panoramic views. The Penthouse and Planetarium Suites have private terraces with hot tubs, so it’s easy to see why several Hollywood celebrities check-in here. Toplevel suites are also decorated with unique furnishings, including an original Andy Warhol painting and Karl Lagerfeld’s sofas. If you’d like to get married here, Rome Cavalieri’s team of experts will help you plan the wedding of your dreams. From hand-made invitations to artisanal design of wedding rings and even the planning of your honeymoon, this is a resort that truly goes the extra mile to ensure your big day is chic, personal and stress-free (romecavalieri.com).

Enveloped in panoramic views of the incredible Indian ocean and lagoons, relish the sunset as you awaken your taste-buds with intense flavours (seahousemaldives.com). Island Hopping is essential to take in all the cuisine The Maldives has to offer. Take a seaplane down to Mihiri Island and watch every meal prepared before your very eyes. Such traditional experiences can be found at the Muraka Restaurant, established at the Mirihi Island Resort. The rustic wooden eatery floats on the islands lagoons, and includes an open-floor section with stunning views of the sea below (mirihi.com).

Undersea Excursions

Between the ocean utopia of the Southern Atolls and the wildlife haven of the Northern Atolls, the azure waters of The Maldives are an aquanaut’s wonderland. Experience dazzling sights whilst snorkelling in the Banana reef. As the first dive site discovered in The Maldives, this hidden treasure is brimming with diverse coral formations and extensive wildlife. From barracuda’s, manta’s and turtles, you’ll feel like you’ve entered a whole new world. After emerging from the depths of the ocean, enjoy breath-taking views of cliffs and caves formed over centuries. Maldivian history dives deeps into the depths of the ocean, where you can find sunken shipwrecks and artefacts venturing hundreds of years back. The Maldives’ Victory is quite a historical location, in which you can find the ruins of a Singaporean cargo ship. The structure remains intact and is now a home for fruitful growth of new corals. Later in the evening, grab a surf or paddleboard and roll across the ocean waves to catch spectacular glimpses of rich schools of fishes. Relish the underwater beauty of the tropical islands where honeymoon memories will last forever.

In the Indonesian language of Bahasa, ‘Lombok’ means chili!

Luscious Lombok

Compared to Bali, the idyllic island of Lombok has established its name through its outstanding relationship with nature. It is more natural, less crowded and more rugged in juxtaposition to its sister island. Travellers from all across the globe are drawn to Lombok’s relaxed pace and natural beauty — but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t stimulating adventures to be had for thrillseekers. Understandably, the island is an allure for outdoor enthusiasts, and the varied topography plays host to many activities. Venture north to witness Indonesia’s second highest volcano, named Gunung Rinjani. Trek to the summit and behold the jaw-dropping sights of sensational sunrises and volcanic calderas. Alternatively, explore through Lombok’s incredible interior of verdant forests and fertile rural areas. With this distinguished landscape, it is easy to forget that it was in fact surfers who introduced the appeal of Lombok to the Western world. The southern coast is a delectable fusion of arching coves and legendary breaks, so this is where surfing fanatics converge.

Where to stay Puri Mas Boutique Resort & Spa Puri Mas is unique in many ways. It is home to the only infinity pool in Mangsit Bay, facing directly to the ocean, and also has the only award-winning spa in Lombok. 233 How to Ask for a Prenup 242 Inspiration

How to Ask for a

Prenup

(without causing a breakup!) Keystone Law matrimonial lawyers, Kim Marshall and Carolyn Bottomley explain how, when and why you should convince your fiancé that a prenup is a must-have prior to getting hitched

Y

our wedding day is approaching. But as you contemplate saying I do, you can’t help but wonder if you’ve forgotten something. Did you organise the photographer? Did you remember to pay the caterer? What about the prenup? While bringing up the idea might seem like a difficult task, having the conversation together could be the key to having a healthy and productive marriage.

Why everyone needs a prenup We are in love! What could ever come between us? Then life happens, people change and sometimes divorce comes knocking at the door. Entering into a prenup compels couples to discuss important financial issues early. Dealing with this at the outset can truly strengthen a relationship and support good communication throughout a marriage. A prenup enables both of you to agree how assets are to be held and managed during the marriage. For example will you have a joint bank account? How will you hold property? This provides you with certainty and clarity and avoids potential future problems. Before signing a prenup, you will

both be required to disclose, to each other, details of your assets, debts and income. This ensures you are both aware of each other’s finances at an early stage and avoids any surprises further down the line. It also encourages honesty and openness in the marriage. Perhaps one of you, or your parents, have been through a difficult divorce and are all too aware of how costly this can be, both emotionally and financially. Setting out what will happen in the event of a split should ensure fewer arguments about finances and save you a small fortune in legal fees.

But doesn’t having a prenup mean we think our marriage will fail at the outset? No. Of course you both hope and intend that your marriage will last and that you will grow old together, but it’s loving and caring to ensure that you protect each other financially. Think of it like an insurance policy. You hope not to have to rely on it, but it’s reassuring to know that it’s there.

I thought they weren’t legally binding in the UK anyway? Prenups are now an everyday part of many family lawyers’ workload and if the document is drafted by a legal specialist and adheres to certain requirements, you should expect to be held to the terms of the agreement, as long as it is fair and provides for both parties’ needs. However, the law in this area is constantly evolving. It is therefore important to bear in mind that the law relating to prenups may be subject to further clarification by future decisions of the superior courts or may be the subject of legislation passed during the course of your marriage.

PLANNING

How and when should I raise the subject? As soon as possible. Try to plan ahead and allow plenty of time. Ideally, bring up the subject several months before you tie the knot, to allow plenty of time to negotiate the terms. You’ll have plenty of other things to think about in the lead up to the big day and it’s all too easy to let time run away. Sensitivity is key when broaching the topic. You might say that you want to discuss both of your financial expectations from the marriage, including what you both want to share. It can be helpful to have an open and honest discussion about your finances at the outset. This sets the tone for good communication, which is key to a successful marriage and can actually strengthen your relationship.

Already married?

You can still enter into a postnup that can provide the same financial protection. However, it may be more difficult to sign when you are both enjoying life as newlyweds!

My fiancé agrees. Now what? It is important to speak to a lawyer that specialises in prenups as well as family and matrimonial law. They will fully consider your situation and goals before you enter into a prenup. For guidance and a free initial consultation with our experienced family and matrimonial lawyers, contact Kim Marshall or Carolyn Bottomley (keystonelaw.co.uk).

Don’t present your fiancé with a document to sign. Instead, discuss the broad terms between yourselves before contacting your lawyers to prepare an initial draft. Allow sufficient time for the document to be negotiated, considered and signed. Agreements should be entered into at least 28 days before the wedding to avoid any situations where it may be signed “under duress”.

Think about legal costs Each of you is required to take independent legal advice about the effects of the terms of the agreement before you sign. If you are the one who suggested the prenup, you might want to offer to pay for your fiancé’s lawyer as well as your own.
