Guest Editor’s Letter

I

am extremely honoured to be named as Guest Contributing Editor with DWHA. I was first drawn to the magazine as it features top creative personalities and exquisite resorts from around the world, showcasing some of the greatest places to get married and honeymoon abroad. Born and raised in the West Indies, I particularly enjoy the reviews on exotic destinations and romantic getaways. This issue features my home, Trinidad and Tobago, the idyllic islands of the Maldives and the picturesque country of Sweden. We take you to the outstanding resort of Hilton Barbados and to the greatest venues in Gibraltar for your wedding — and that’s just naming a few! As Guest Editor, I focus on men’s fashion and styling, as well as bridal trends from some of the top designers in the world. Grooms are often forgotten, and so a keen interest of mine is to target refining their grooming and style. For the brides, we have hair and makeup tips, glamour from haute couture and this season’s hottest buys. From our gorgeous Real Life Weddings to our Know Before You Go guide, we’ve got plenty of inspiration for your big day. All of this and more awaits you — sit back and enjoy!

istorically, different flowers have their own meanings. Dating back to the Victorian times, a coded communication was formed through various flowers and floral arrangements, referred to as the “language of flowers”. Choosing certain flowers for your bouquet can add an extra dimension to your theme by symbolising something that is meaningful. For example, Stephanotis are a popular floral choice for brides as their Victorian meaning is marital happiness!

Nicola’s top tip

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN ENGLAND

Add your own personalised moments in the day. We had a ‘golden hour’ of music, including all the music from the year we met. Also, don’t be afraid to do whatever you want to! I ordered some bride and groom figures as a surprise for Joe, but also had our three rescue cats made too!

We

Barmbyfield barn was available to hire for four days, so Nicola and Joe spent the two days before the wedding decorating and preparing the venue

both fell in love with Barmbyfields barn when we first went to a charity event there years ago. It was a gorgeous, rustic blank canvas that we could turn into anything we wanted. We went to meet with the owner of the barn and couldn’t believe our luck when he said that he only had one date left in 2016, and it was the date of our ten-year anniversary! We made the wedding our own by including romantic and thoughtful touches about Joe and I. Joe made a table top for people to sign, which later became a table in our home. As we have incredibly talented and creative friends and family, we wished to involve them as much as possible. For example, my maids of honour, Holly and Lianne, helped by designing the invitations and the layout of the barn. Holly handmade a huge amount of decorations and we borrowed some beautiful pieces from her shop, Grey Bear in York. The barn had two large chalkboards that we decorated with memories, such as our first date and how Joe proposed. When searching for my dress, I only looked in two shops! However, I didn’t just come out with ‘the one’, I came out with ‘the two’. I knew exactly what I wanted, but couldn’t find it anywhere so one of my bridesmaids recommended an outlet. I explained to the lady exactly what I was looking for and she pulled out this beautiful beaded dress. Whilst I was trying it on, she brought another dress out in my size. As it was a prototype, I knew that nobody else would have it. I adored both dresses so ended up getting them both – one to suit each venue! A very talented lady from the Etsy shop ‘Rose Red Rose White’ turned a vintage necklace into a headpiece and made it fit my head and hairstyle perfectly. For the weekend, we hired lodges at the KP club in Kilnwick Percy. Each lodge had its own hot tub, kitchen and multiple bathrooms, which was great when we were getting ready on the morning of the wedding! Joe wrote on the bottom of my wedding shoes, “When you put these on to become my wife...Remember you’re the best thing in my life!” He also sent me a little box with ‘ten reasons why I love you’ cards in. Everything was just perfect.

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN SAINT MARTIN

A destination

Megan’s top tip

Choose a venue that will coordinate everything for you. It’s less stressful to just communicate with the one person for everything

wedding was always something we had dreamed about. We love the beach and energy that Saint Martin gives and a destination wedding is also less stressful and demanding than planning a local one! After choosing Saint Martin as our location, we did some research into places on the island to accommodate the number of guests we would have. A year before the wedding, we took a trip to the island to visit the venues that we had researched. Overall, no place could compare to Belmond La Sammana and they were able to give us exactly what we wanted within our budget, so it was easy to pick! I got my dress from Grace Loves Lace — an Australian bohemian style wedding designer that I have admired since we were first engaged. As I am based in New York, I was originally going to order the dress online without ever trying it on! However, I got very lucky when they announced that they would be having a trunk show in New York. I was able to try on the gown and fell in love instantly. My sister chose all my beauty looks and did my makeup. As for my hair, my best friend did it based on a picture I found on Pinterest. I knew I wanted it up because it’s very hot and the island and I also wanted to show off the back of my dress. The grounds of Belmond La Samanna inspired our colour palette as I wanted our theme to complement the vibe of the resort. With the ocean and amazing white villas for our backdrop, I didn’t want bright colours that would take away from the environment. I wanted our guests to be more gravitated to their surroundings and simply enjoy the amazing views. Our wedding planner, Stephanie, and her team allowed us to send pictures of centerpieces and flowers for the ceremony arch. They coordinated with a local florist who did an amazing job. As for the other decorations, Stephanie gave us options they could arrange and we chose from there. It was very easy and stress-free. Our guests stayed 20 minutes from the venue at a resort our family has been going to for over 30 years, Simpson Bay Resort & Marina. This was very easy to organise and we were set up with a coordinator who helped us through the process and booked our guests rooms under ‘Megan & Jimmy’s’ wedding to receive the group rate. Inside each room for the guest arrival we made welcoming bags with a map of the island of our favourite beaches and restaurants. Belmond La Samanna boasts a truly romantic setting overlooking the most exclusive stretch of sand in Saint Martin

Auli’s Advice

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN SCOTLAND

A wedding should be your day, don’t try to please everyone else. A strong marriage isn’t based on your wedding, but on your life together

About

11 years ago, I went on a university placement to Ålesund on the west coast of Norway for 3 months. Soon after coming home to Aberdeen, I met Jan. It turned out that his mum was from Ålesund and I had worked with his aunty and looked after his great aunty in the hospital where I’d been on placement! Many years later, we went to Ålesund on holiday. One evening, we went to a lookout point to take photos of the town and there Jan went down on one knee and proposed. About a year after we got engaged, I was checking out wedding locations and as soon as I found Crear, I knew I wanted to get married there. We needed a small, intimate wedding that was child-friendly and stress free, and it seemed like Crear could be the answer to our prayers. We were just after a nice couple of days with our closest family and best friends. To get married at the same time was a bonus! I knew I wanted a simple dress. I tried on traditional gowns, but didn’t feel comfortable in any of them. One day I went into a shop and saw a simple white wedding dress with a sparkly shrug over that I loved and I bought it the day after. I had on earrings that Jan gave me in the morning of our wedding day. Waking up on the day, I only felt excitement. Everything was sorted and the Crear team was so organised, we didn’t have to worry about anything. Jan ran down and swam in the sea with his best man and then he cooked a full Scottish breakfast for everyone. At ten o’clock my hairdresser arrived and I was given a glass of champagne and told to relax — perfect! The whole day was just amazing. Had I known how good it could be, I would’ve done it a lot sooner, I just wish it could’ve lasted longer! It was important for us that our wedding day wasn’t just about myself and Jan, but included our girls as well. They still speak about Crear and want to go back for a longer holiday. I can’t say that our lives have changed very much, having already had two children together. I love my wedding ring and every time I speak about Jan as my husband, it brings a smile to face.

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN FRANCE

of love

Nicole, 26 and Jeremy, 27, eloped to France for an intimate ceremony and romantic photoshoot on the streets of Paris Photography by Crystal Stokes

DWHA || march / april

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN FRANCE

Nicole’s top tip

Remember why you are getting married and what is important to you before, during, and after the wedding. Keep it simple and about your marriage

At first

Jeremy wanted to have a huge wedding. But as we have our own business and spend most of our days with our clients, it would have been a 350+ person event and we would have spent 18 months planning. That’s not my idea of fun. When I asked Jeremy to name a place on our bucket list that would make a destination wedding worth it for him, he said Paris, and I said “done”. We wanted to protect our time and money to ensure we were focusing on the most important thing that was happening — becoming husband and wife. We knew that photography would be a significant aspect as we were traveling alone, so we made sure we had the best photographer, but didn’t get distracted by everything else that comes with planning a wedding. I went to the market the day of the ceremony for flowers and a local bakeshop for the cake. We wanted the money to be spent on the trip of a lifetime and the memories through pictures. Once we had the idea of Paris, everything else started falling into place with the help of our travel agent, Miriam Wolf. In terms of the actual location for our vows, I was on the hunt for beautiful stairs as soon as we landed in Paris. On the day of the wedding, we got in a cab and asked him to take us to the top of the city and yelled, “stop!” when we saw the right place to hop out and have our ceremony. We did a photoshoot for the rest of the evening around the city at all of the anticipated places such as the Louvre, Love lock bridge and the Eiffel Tower. When searching for my dress, I wanted something that complimented my body and resembled European style. I tried on many dresses and then asked the associate to find the closest thing on clearance. She swore I wasn’t going to like any of the clearance items, but I loved one of them and got it for a great price. The only colour that we planned on for the wedding itself was red on the groom’s accessories and my shoes. Our biggest challenge had nothing to do with the destination wedding; it was the people in our lives not understanding why we would want to do this. Their confusion and ill feelings went away as time passed and realised they would have done the same thing if they had the opportunity!

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN GRAN CANARIA

We

chose Gran Canaria for our destination wedding as it has guaranteed sunshine and wasn’t too far for our family to travel. After creating a shortlist of venues from our wedding planner’s website, we flew to the island and did a roadshow of the main venues we wanted to look closer at. Our eventual venue was the last one we looked at and we pinned all our hopes on it. It was called Finca Justus Frantz and situated high up in the hills overlooking Maspalomas. It certainly didn’t disappoint — we absolutely loved it! I got my dress from The Confetti Box in Eccles, Manchester. The first dress I tried on was perfect — it made my mum and Maid of Honour cry! It was a fitted fishtail dress with a sweetheart neckline, lace and some sparkle. Michelle Keegan inspired my hair and beauty looks. As I am a makeup artist, I wanted to do my own makeup as I know what suits me. I also did my own hair. For my makeup, I went for a natural smokey look and my hair was similar to how I normally have it — partly lifted at the top with some volume to allow my veil to be attached. I wanted to keep my appearance similar to how Chris knows and loves! After a lot of research, we decided on pastel peach and sage green colours for our main theme as these fitted with the secret garden feel we were looking for. Pinterest was a great help in deciding the colours and sharing our ideas with the main wedding party. We didn’t need an awful lot of decorations as the grounds were naturally pretty, but what we did have done was excellent. The decoration team did a fantastic job with flowers, professional signage and little trinkets. We had “did you know?” signs, a makeup table with flowers on it, a floral arch and a rustic wheelbarrow for water on arrival. Having a destination wedding meant that we had to rely heavily on our wedding planner to find suppliers and guide us on the best routes to take. We also had to separate all our decorations, clothing and shoes into hand luggage bags and asked our guests to take it with them, so that nothing valuable went in the hold area of the plane. We also made sure that all guests were looked after by tailoring things for different people as we wanted everyone to enjoy the day equally. Entertainment included a 12-man band, flamenco dancers, fireworks and a choreographed dance by the couple!

“We can bring to life our dreams”

Mira Zwillinger INTERVIEW

As an international luxury fashion house, Mira Zwillinger creates beautiful couture designs. We speak to Lihi Zwillinger of the mother-daughter team to discuss inspiration, fashion, and their latest collection

W

orking as a mother-daughter team was quite natural for us as we are very close to one another. My mother welcomed me to the business with open arms and gave me responsibilities from design work to running the business. Of course, the one thing we always do together is designing the collections. We enjoy the process and most of the time we love the same things. When we don’t, we can fight a bit, but we make up quite quickly and the resulting gowns are often the most stunning.

WE FIND INSPIRATION IN ALMOST ANYTHING. It can be a breath-taking view, work of art, or even a scene from a Disney movie. Our new 2017 collection ‘Whisper of Blossom’ was inspired by nature — that beautifully ethereal-like moment when the first buds of life appear on naked tree branches, still shuddering from the cold winter. It’s that moment when nature starts to whisper and hum its tune of rebirth and renewal. The moment of humble grace, right before the flourishing blossom. The moment of pristine stillness, hinting at the eye-opening magnificence to come. 78

DWHA || march / april

The Whisper of Blossom 2017 collection embodies palettes of nudes and roses, combining shimmering branches and vines with gentle, handmade flowers, a nod before they blossom into greatness. Among our favourites in this collection are our Viola dress, with the beautiful detailed cape, and the Noelle dress.

WHEN WE DESIGN, WE DON’T OFTEN LOOK AT FASHION ICONS — although we do love looking at

couture fashion shows from Paris and Milan fashion weeks. We actually find it more inspiring to look at brands that are not familiar with the bridal world, but possess high attention to detail. Chanel does this very well and has always been one of our favorites. When we start designing a collection, we firstly look for a theme and inspiration — something that brings a sparkle to our eyes. From the inspiration, we then found our colour palette, feel and spirit of the collection with the help of moodboards. We source out fabrics and make our own fabric designs, congruous with our inspirations. It is then that we decide on the actual design of the dresses.

FASHION

THE VIOLA DRESS:

A strapless silk tulle gown

THE NOELLE DRESS: V neck

Guipule lace over tulle

It seemed as though you were confined to a limited colour palette and most of the bridal gowns we saw looked the same. It didn’t really catch our attention until we started designing bridal attire for the first time and then, we just fell in love. We realised that because you are so limited, you need to be extra creative. Today, we both find it fascinating and challenging. In addition, we are both perfectionists and love and appreciate details and hard work. We feel that we can bring to life our dreams. We invest a lot of time and attention to every dress we design, and we find that brides appreciate this kind of couture work. The wedding industry is developing in a stylish and fashionable direction. In the past a wedding gown was traditional and classic, whilst nowadays, dresses could be the next hot trend

in fashion. We can definitely say that this is one of the principles that guide us in our designs.

IN OUR OPINION, IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO CHOOSE A DRESS THAT REFLECTS YOUR PERSONALITY. Find a dress

you feel good in, and emphasises everything you love about yourself. When you feel good in a dress it will reflect on the outside. When you try on the right dress you should feel it’s the one. Overall, it is one of our favourite aspects to our job to make dreams come true in this way and we to continue to do so. We aim to carry on growing, designing beautiful dresses and thinking outside the box to make something unique and different…the sky’s the limit!

“[The bride] becomes my muse”

Celest Thoi INTERVIEW

O

The Malaysian bridal designer discuss her inspiration, latest collection and couture gowns

N A DAILY BASIS, I AM INSPIRED by the smiles on the bride’s face when she first sees herself in one of our gowns. But from a design perspective, textures, patterns and colours of places — such as a secret garden on a sunny day or a cool autumn in Tokyo — often inspire me. When it comes to bridal couture, I listen to the bride-to-be and understand her characteristics. Essentially, she becomes my muse. The visual aesthetics translates itself into a certain mood where I put thoughts to paper. I love this process and it’s probably my favourite part of the process.

THE LATEST COLLECTION is a collaboration with one of Japan’s legendary fabric producers, Sarakichi. Their beautiful patterns and unique coloured details were perfect for our ready-to-wear range, and a precursor for future ranges that will have multi-coloured bridesmaids and evening dresses. When it comes to planning a new collection, finding time to clear my mind and start with an empty creative canvas is always the first challenge, particularly because of family responsibilities. Once this 94

DWHA || march / april

starts, the creativity takes over and time passes by like water flowing through river. Creativity then meets up with reality in the form of practical considerations, such as whether the design can sell or how easy or difficult it is to produce the dress with the intended fabrics.

OVERALL, WE LOVE USING CLASSIC FRENCH laces to work towards a silhouette that fits a bride’s unique shape. As we’re based in Malaysia with a gorgeous tropical weather nearly all year round, we tend to make more strapless and form-fitting styles, like a mermaid or trumpet silhouette. One of our design principles is always to design a dress that is not just beautiful and timeless, but comfortable. The key is to take the theme, venue and location into consideration. WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON BRIDAL COUTURE, working to bring

out our brides’ beauty and confidence for that special day. Our custom shoes and bridesmaids range seems to be growing and we’re looking to find stockists beyond Asia. The future is looking bright!

Men-Tality Men’s Skin Care CLEANSE

Soap dehydrates, dries your skin, and may even cause irritation. Avoid using it on your face. A gentle foaming cleanser is ideal for daily use. If you are prone to breakouts or have sensitive skin, try using an astringent in place of an aftershave. Aftershaves are loaded with perfumes and ingredients, which can irritate and further dry out your skin.

MOISTURIZE

K E R R Y S S AY S The modern man is fully aware of his personal grooming and appearance. Many beauty companies, salons and spas now cater to personalised men’s services. Despite rapid changes in global markets, skin care still remains one of the most profitable categories in business with continual growth. In fact, according to Market Research, the global skin care industry is estimated to reach $121 billion in 2016. Men are now a major contribution factor in the continuous strife for beauty and anti aging.

126

DWHA || march / april

Moisturize and protect your skin every morning. Repêchage skincare has formulated the Mineral Face Shield that leaves the skin smooth and luminous.

EXFOLIATE

Facials and regular exfoliation are a must! The advantages are not only removing dead skin cells, but also replacing essential nutrients lost from daily activities and aging. Repêchage skincare offers the world famous ‘Four Layer Facial’, perfect for men of any age and skin type that can be customised to your specific needs.

BEARD WAX

If you use a beard wax or oil, be sure that the ingredients don’t clog your pores, or transfer with contact. Some waxes and oils only coat the hair but don’t benefit the skin or the hair follicle itself. Opt for oil that contains a skin and hair-softening ingredient. Mafura Oil specifically is rich in essential fatty acids, helping to alleviate dry skin, and improve elasticity. It also contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, so won’t clog pores or leave the skin or beard greasy.

FOR HIM

Men’s Hair Social media has created more awareness of trending styles and hair fashion for men. Guys are now becoming more daring and open to styling their hair as part of their daily routine.

CUTS

Model Kerry Goberdhan Kelan Branellac // Photography Gary Jordan

Select the right professional. Barber vs. Hair Stylist - be sure to understand the difference. Barbers have been a long-standing tradition with men opting for machine cuts and razor detailing. Hair Stylists have now expanded their salon to include men’s styling and grooming with more trendy and versatile options. Don’t hesitate to talk to your stylist/ barber and let him or her know your preferences, likes, dislikes.

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

John Paul Mitchell Systems has created MITCH man; a complete line of styling products. Choose from waxes, creams or pomades for light to strong hold. Many products are now intermixable dependent on the desired style and long term.

IN SALON HAIR TREATMENTS

Hair treatments are for men too! They’re a great way to achieve healthier hair. Salons now offer semi and demi permanent services that can either enhance or cover greys, while simultaneously hydrating, conditioning and adding shine. Take charge of your individual look!

Model Andy Peeke // Photography Andrew Ford

Invest in a daily shampoo that removes build up from styling products, and hydrates and conditions the hair and scalp. Be sure to have your professional recommend the one that’s right for you. There are shampoos and conditioners that help with dry scalp, hair thinning and so much more.

Adventure to Antigua ANTIGUA Brimming with archetypal Caribbean beaches and stunning tropical backdrops, the sister-islands of Antigua & Barbuda are ultimate destinations for a truly romantic getaway

T

here are 365 beaches that grace the shores of Antigua — one for every day of the year — and each is beautifully unique. As the majority of bays rest upon the calm waters of the Caribbean Sea, you can effortlessly relax on soft sand shores underneath the tropical sun. Paradisiacal beaches of every size await you, along with exotic Creole cuisine, welcoming people and opportunities for adventure. Overall, Antigua is famed as the perfect destination for rest and recuperation, strolling beaches and sipping legendary cocktails — the epitome of a relaxing romantic retreat.

BREATH-TAKING BEACHES

With so many sensational bays across the island to choose from, Antigua has a beach to suit everyone’s desires. For couples looking to experience lively entertainment, Dickenson Bay should be your port of call. The bay offers an array of bars, restaurants and water sports, all within the beautiful mile-long stretch of golden sands. The extension to Dickenson Bay on the south side is officially called Runaway Bay. A magnificent stretch of sand that sweeps as far as the eye can see, it is often much quieter than the main strip. However, if bustling beaches aren’t quite for you, there are plenty of

136

DWHA || march / april

quieter shores to discover around the island. Half Moon Bay is a perfect example of this. Although you can hardly call the bay undiscovered, it can often be found deserted. A beautiful curve of light pink and white sand on the east coast of Antigua, Half Moon Bay is simply exquisite.

EXCITING EXPERIENCES

Famed as an event not to miss on the island, Shirley Heights comes alive on a Sunday afternoon. As one of the best spots to get a bird’s eye view of the island, the location is remarkable. Maldives MALDIVES Few places can match the magic of the Maldives, for it is nothing less than simply enchanting

Where to stay

N

ot only does the Maldives offer azure waters, it’s also brimming with antique traditions, divine dishes, mesmerising marine life and adrenaline-pumping sports. The Maldives is an intriguing country, consisting of 26 spectacular coral atolls and spanning across 1,000km. Much of the Maldives heritage is influenced by its fusion of cultures — Arabic, Indonesian, Malaysian, African, French and Creole. Unquestionably the islands’ winning assets are the sugar-white sand beaches and surrounding ocean, making it honeymooners first choice.

Set on a private island in the North Malé Atoll, Gili Lankanfushi, Maldives is an intimate coral island set within a sparkling lagoon. With jetties threading across the water out to spacious villa accommodations, ultimate privacy can be found. This elegant resort is just a 20-minute speedboat ride from the International Airport at Malé, so you can escape to paradise just moments after your flight lands (gili-lankanfushi.com).

MULTI-CULTURAL SPIRIT

Located south-west of Sri Lanka and India, the Maldives dazzles visitors with its array of cultures, making it such a diverse destination to explore. As one would expect, there is a great Asian influence in Maldivian cuisine and this is most proudly presented through a selection of signature curries. These tend to be spicy and exotic, using coconut milk and fish, accompanied with ‘roshi’ (a thin flatbread). Those who aren’t fans of curry will also find freshly-caught seafood, island-grown fruits and European dining options. Let’s just say all tastes buds are lovingly catered for. When it comes to cultural arts, the Maldives has retained music rituals such as traditional drumming and dancing (known as ‘boduberu’) which derives from early African settlers. With the waves of the Indian Ocean establishing the rhythmic beating, feel free to give in to temptation and dance the night away, under the moonlight.

UNDER THE SEA

The Maldives can be aptly described as an open air aquarium, given that 99% of the country is made up of water. Turtles, manta rays and rainbow fishes are year-round guests of these waters. Thanks to the abundance of marine life, it’s not hard to understand why the Maldives is accredited as one of the world’s top destinations for snorkelling and diving. Begin with a whizz over the Indian Ocean in your very own private speed boat, then dive in to the cyan-blue waters to see the tropical sea wonders that lurk below. For beginners and experienced divers alike, there are numerous dive sites such as Biyadhoo, Villingili and Ukulhas; each offering unparalleled opportunities to come eye to eye with beguiling sea creatures. This is a must-do experience that promises to deliver a romantic underwater glide for you and your loved one.

A popular tourist destination, White Beach is lined with resorts, restaurants and bars, making it a perfect spot for party-goers and social butterflies. Of course, White Beach isn’t the only stunning bay that Boracay has to offer. If you’d rather get away from the crowds, venture to Puka Beach, one of the most undeveloped shores on the island. Tropical luxury A charming destination of abundant culture, extraordinary beauty and breath-taking landscapes, Barbados is the epitome of an exotic escape. Read on to discover the romantic allure of this Caribbean gem…

BARBADOS

C

onsistently ranked as a popular getaway for honeymooners, Barbados oozes both charm and indulgence. It’s the capital of Caribbean luxury and a frequent destination for the world’s elite. Sensational beaches captivate visitors, along with finedining restaurants, exclusive resorts, welcoming people, and much more. From stunning natural wonders to firstclass amenities, Barbados has it all. Here, we reveal what truly makes the island so special.

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES

Barbados is home to some of the world’s best beaches and with over 70 miles of outstanding and diverse shores, you are guaranteed to find the right one for you. On the west of the island is the Platinum Coast, famed for its calm, crystalclear waters and seemingly endless sugar-white sands. A starstudded location, the shore is a strip of many upmarket hotels and villas with around 18 global billionaires said to have set up a home here. However, if you and your partner are looking for a romantically intimate bay to relax on, we recommend Gibbes Beach — regarded as one of the most tranquil beaches on the island. The pristine sands and verdant trees ensure a stunning backdrop for a day out with your partner. On the other hand, the tides from the Atlantic Ocean make the rugged east coast a paradise for surfers. Arguably, a mustvisit spot on this side of the island is the scenic seaside town of Bathsheba, where the spectacular boulders are said to resemble the bath of Sheba. The Bathsheba Pools are located a stone’s throw away from the sandy bay and are carved out of the inshore coral reef. If you stumble across the natural whirlpools, you may be fortunate enough to experience a rum punch party. If you do, get involved! The local Bajans are a welcoming community and the parties are a unique way to encounter a truly unique Barbadian experience.

CULTURAL ADVENTURES

Bustling with activities, Barbados is thriving with things to do all throughout the year. The capital of Bridgetown is always a good place to start. Not only boasting a great selection of shops and street markets, Bridgetown is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning that there are plenty of stunning historical buildings to explore. Many boat tours of the island also begin at this remarkable port city. For an unrivalled romantic experience, book a sunset cruise on a catamaran. Cruises begin with a snorkelling session and a swim with impressive sea turtles, and conclude with an exquisite meal underneath the stars. Barbados is home to many notable fine-dining restaurants to tantalise your tastebuds. Traditional dishes adopt influences from African, Caribbean and European cuisine to create a delicious fusion of flavours. Due to the surrounding waters,

fish is a staple part of Barbadian dining, with salmon, shrimp and lobster gracing many menus across the island. In terms of beverages, Barbados is the birthplace of rum and has been creating some of the world’s finest spirits for over 350 years. A great way to learn the history of the nation’s drink is to go on a rum tour — you’ll even get to try some samples! The Mount Gay tour is particularly popular, since the beverage is the oldest rum and most continually produced spirit in the world.

SUPERIOR RESORTS

As the largest and longest serving international brand on the island, Hilton Barbados is well-established as a remarkable resort of unparalleled luxury in a luscious and tropical setting. Situated in a prime location on the tropical peninsula of Needham’s point, Hilton Barbados has access to two sensational beaches. Guests can unwind on the beaches, b e s i d e t h e i n f i n i t y p o ol complex or spa, experience diving at the on-site dive shop, or take in some history by visiting the historic Charles Fort — built in the 17th-century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If the thought of dolphins turning up at your wedding

doesn’t appeal to you, then instead of heading underwater, you could hit the high spots. Take your vows atop Mount Alvernia on Cat Island, known locally as Como Hill, the highest point in The Islands Of The Bahamas. It was named Mount Alvernia by Monsignor John Hawes, a Roman Catholic priest and is said to be reminiscent of La Verna, the hill in Tuscany that was given to St. Francis of Assisi as a place where he could peacefully contemplate. Monsignor John Hawes was a skilled architect and sculptor — the stone ruins of the Hermitage are a very atmospheric wedding venue. You can’t fail to feel the romance of these islands which are awash with beautiful places to get wed.

HISTORICAL WONDERS

If a spectacular location is what you desire for the backdrop to your wedding, then the 12th-century Augustinian Cloister on Paradise Island certainly takes some beating. The stone steps up to the Cloister are perfect for showing off a drift of tulle and lace or a cascading train of regal satin. The Cloister is set at the head of the Versailles-inspired gardens of the stunning One&Only Ocean Club (oneandonlyresorts.com).

VIBRANT FESTIVITIES

Floral and table decorations can take on a myriad of themes in The Bahamas from the lavish to the simple beauties of nature. The pale creams and pinks of the local conch shells suit a pastel palate while the vibrant angular birds of paradise flowers make a more dramatic scenario. Even the beaches come in different colours, from the fine powdery white sand through golden hues to the pink of crushed coral. A Junkanoo-themed wedding (a traditional parade) certainly offers drama aplenty as the colourful Junkanoo costumes and talented musicians make any party go with a swing — it’s a true challenge to keep still once those Junkanoo drum beats start up.

It would be a shame not to visit another dreamy destination while you are out in the islands, even for only an awayday by ferry to the stunning pink sands of Harbour Island or speedboat down to The Exumas to see those famous swimming pigs.

THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE

The connection between art and architecture can firstly be seen in the Centre Georges Pompidou. The idea for the multicultural complex was established to bring together different forms of creativity. In fact, it houses the largest museum for modern art in Europe. The exposed skeleton of brightly coloured tubes even features the colour blue, a signature colour in Etienne’s latest collection. Other examples include the pristine white of bridal attire, reminiscent of The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, and the geometric and equilibrate lines of silhouettes, similar to the design of the Eiffel Tower. Etienne’s alternative, daring and contemporary dresses can also be linked to Moulin Rouge, a project that has developed a distinct concept recognised worldwide.

Brittany CAKE DESIGNER

BEATRIZ BELLIARD

One of the great historic provinces in France, Brittany retains its Celtic heritage with walled cities, extravagant churches and striking castles

The talented cake designer discusses her unique and delicious creations

BEATRIZ BELLIARD CAKE DESIGNER

Using my diploma as chef-pâtissier, I’ve been making cakes from mainly sugar paste since October 2009. The worked sugar paste covers the cakes in an original way, allowing it to amaze the viewer. All forms become possible and my imagination is able to run free. I have worked hard to find recipes that combine taste and lightness, choosing to work with organic ingredients and blonde sugar to improve the taste. Solicit a cake designer when you are convinced that the cake is an essential part of the party! Cake designing is to master all techniques of decoration and personalise it according to the expectations of the customer. For example, for a teenage “fashion” birthday, I made a

cake-shaped shoe and shoe box. For a company, the cake can take on the logo or a desired theme. However, our biggest demand is for wedding cakes. Today, many couples look for novelty and quality for their weddings. The wedding cake must be customised according to the expectations of the bride and groom, and the goal is that the cake will be in harmony with them. I want to develop a “haute couture” pastry for the general public. For a service totally mastered, I prefer to operate to order. We can be contacted either by internet or telephone and we deliver in Brittany and the west of France. It is recommended to visit at least one month before any important project and six months to a year before a wedding because our schedule for production fills up quickly.

HISTORICAL ROOTS

Situated in the heart of the famed Médoc vineyards, the wines produced by Château Léoville Poyferré are, understandably, exquisite. The estate’s origins date back to 1638, meaning that the venue possesses a deeply rich and fascinating history. Due to this distinguished past, investments and renovations, the château has retained its levels of excellence. The estate was fully modernised in 1984, but has time and time again been refurbished to maintain its superior standards.

Bordeaux A region famed for its wines, Bordeaux consists of rolling vineyards, charming buildings and world-class art

ON THE GRAPEVINE

If you intend to use the impressive venue for your wedding reception, it provides a perfect opportunity to incorporate the local wine. Just 45 minutes northwest of Bordeaux, the Médoc region is renowned for its magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon wines. The Léoville estate itself was at the forefront of Bordeaux vineyard management at the time and today, many of the innovative practises are still in use. The modern winemaking facilities illustrate the perfect balance between modernity and tradition, featuring the latest technological advances, while the barrel cellars respect Médocain traditions. Make sure to try the estate’s eponymous red wine, Château Léoville Poyferré.

GETTING HITCHED

For couples looking to tie the knot at Château Léoville Poyferré, the reception hall provides an impeccable venue for your celebrations. Opening up onto a terrace that overlooks a charming courtyard and rolling vineyards, the hall occupies that all-important picture-perfect backdrop. A warm, welcoming setting with exposed beams, the reception hall is modern and unctional, ideal for any themed wedding (leoville-poyferre.fr).

Bridal briefing CHOOSE YOUR STYLE Schedule an appointment with your hair stylist for a complete consultation. You should be specific about your likes, dislikes and expectations on the day. Be sure to discuss the theme and style of the wedding, as well as the type of gown to be worn. Having a photograph of the gown is even better!

K E R R Y S S AY S Wedding hairstyles for the bridal party requires extensive planning. For the bride, the choice of hair style can be as important as the dress itself. Be prepared for your special day by following some of Kerry’s personal experiences working in the salon and with brides.

“Style isn’t born, it’s groomed” Did you know?

Brides traditionally wear veils because ancient Greeks and Romans believed they protected her from evil spirits

224

DWHA || march / april

TIMING Your trial run should take place close to the date of the wedding to ensure that your hair is fairly comparable to how it would be on the big day. You may experiment with various hairstyles a few months beforehand only to discover that the season or other elements have changed the texture of your hair. Your hair should be coloured or treated at least one week before the wedding to facilitate any changes. A slight dusting or trimming of your ends will add to the finish of your hairstyle.

THE LOOK Voluminous hair, facilitated by large rollers pulled softly from the face, creates a sexy, playful look. Dramatic updos are usually reserved for the princess gown, whilst a sleek pull-back or smooth blow-out works well with a chic pant suit or A-line dress.

PLANNING

USE YOUR HEAD Choose veils and hairpieces carefully. They are meant to accessorise, not overpower your look. Ensure that your pieces fasten securely and can be released easily if necessary. You may opt for a bandeau or hair comb rather than the traditional tiara. Don’t forget to take all hair accessories and veil to your trial!

SHINE ON Shine is vital. Straight hair may appear glossier, whilst wavy and curly hair often seems brittle and dull. Have your stylist recommend treatments and products that may relate to your hair type. Also on the day, you may want to have an anti-humidity or shine spray for that photo finish.

BRIDAL PARTY

Ensure that key members of your bridal party attend a trial as well. They should be comfortable with their hairstyles, dress and overall appearance. Booking a competent stylist or salon is imperative to your schedule on the day.

North coast allure WITH RICHARD WEBER

Dominican Wedding Planner, Richard Weber, recounts his own tale of one of his favourite off-resort weddings on the North Coast THE STORY

Sarah and Jack grew up with their families vacationing together on a yearly basis. Their story of youthful innocence blossoming into young love and stolen kisses is reminiscent of a Sunday afternoon feel-good television series. Earlier that year, their parents surprised them with the announcement of an impromptu gathering of the two families to the Dominican Republic in early summer. In turn, Sarah and Jack surprised them with an engagement and a plan to get married while on holiday!

THE PLAN

Jack reached out to me for wedding planning help in February, leaving us with only four months to plan their wedding! As the parents had already booked a beachfront resort, we didn’t have to work out the accommodation details. Jack had few demands for the ceremony, yet

PLANNING

“ My search for the perfect church

was over almost as soon as it started”

“ We introduce couples

to a verdant and vibrant Caribbean”

they were specific: an intimate Catholic ceremony in a Catholic church, acoustic guitar music and featuring Dominican culture. At first, the grandiose and beautiful cathedral located in the central park of Puerto Plata seemed like the logical choice, but the couple’s willingness to get out of the city and into the backcountry piqued my interest and enthusiasm. I considered that if the families were to spend a week on a beautiful beach, we should show them something completely different for the wedding. Along with 735 miles of Atlantic and Caribbean coastline, the Dominican Republic also boasts five mountain ranges. In fact, much of the country is mountains and lush valleys. In a brief 45-minute drive up from the coast, we introduce couples to a verdant and vibrant Caribbean. Brimming with gracious hosts, authentic smiles, magical

beauty and delicious food, it’s a wonder to behold. This time, however, my search for the perfect church was over almost as soon as it started. Driving straight up into the northern Septentrional mountain range, I came upon an impossibly small and humble white washed chapel. It seemed that it would likely be bursting at the seams with our 15 guests. In a couple of phone calls I tracked down Padre Carmelo, the priest responsible for services at the chapel. He could not have been more warm and agreeable to perform the ceremony. I met Padre Carmelo at the mountain top retreat center where he resides. After a brief hello with a knowing smile, he indicated that I follow a footpath on my own that led into the jungle. The path gave way to hand-hewn stone steps whereby I immediately, and quite literally, ran into a peacock in full display. There must have been 1000 of those steps taking me deeper and higher into the overgrown wilds, or at least it felt like it in the midday heat. To my complete surprise, I discovered a medievallooking cathedral, in miniature form, in the absolute middle of nowhere — on top of a mountain on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic! I later learned from original paintings back in Padre Carmelo’s residence that the small chapel was a perfect re-creation of an ancient church on the outskirts of Seville, Spain.

www.dwha.co.uk

229

This was a special place requiring special photography. I snapped off a bunch of phone pictures and immediately sent them to Spaniard wedding photographer, German Paz. I knew it would appeal not only to his artistic sense, but his national pride. His immediate response gave me the answer I was looking for: “I love the place. I want to shoot there!”

WEDDING DAY

We picked the guests up in two different vans for the trek between beachfront resort and mountain top venue. Classical guitar, accompanied by the many wild birds, created an impossibly perfect soundtrack to the final moments leading up to Sarah’s entrance. Padre Carmelo surprised me at the very last minute by asking me to translate readings from Spanish to English directly from the catechism while reading them aloud at the altar! We gathered outside the church under the canopy of trees for toasts before I escorted the guests on to our reception venue. Sarah and Jack’s portrait session with German Paz resulted in unbelievably beautiful and natural pictures. They literally walked down the ancient

mountain road lined with banana and coconut vendors, waterfalls, herders moving their cattle and the real Dominican Republic preparing for sunset. With minutes to spare to sunset we reconvened at an eco-lodge in Tubagua perched on the edge of the northern slope of the mountain looking out over countryside, Atlantic coast and the city of Puerto Plata in the distance. The eco-lodge boasts the bathroom with the best view on the island — it has no wall on the side open to the coastal panorama! Bright stars twinkled and greeted the newly bonded families as the sky shifted from auburn to cobalt to black. Asking a wedding planner for a favourite wedding is like asking a parent which is his favourite child. I love them all, but some I love differently than others. Sarah and Jack’s is definitely different. Contact www.dominicanweddingplanner.com to discover your own off-resort Caribbean wedding.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Foreign guidelines, rules and essentials

H

ere is DWHA’s at-a-glance-style checklist for all of the required and advised documentation you’ll need for your destination wedding. We have put together details on the majority of the world’s wedding hotspots so that you’re in the know and ready to start sending out those ‘Save The Date’ cards. Here you’ll find up-to-date information tailored to each country on key areas, such as medical and vaccination advice, flight times and legal requirements. This section provides guidance on whether your marriage can take place in the country of your choice, and, importantly, whether it will be valid in British and international law. Remember, rock royalty Mick Jagger overlooked a technicality at his Hindu wedding to Jerry Hall in Bali — the union was not actually legally recognised in this country. With the help of your guide, you can start to gather all of the relevant paperwork. You may decide to employ a destination-wedding planner, who is either based here or in the country you are marrying in. A reputable planner will advise you on all the paperwork you need to ensure your marriage is legal for a one-off fee starting around £200. Other vital considerations include visa requirements and residency. Residency refers to the number of days or house you are required to reside in the country before your wedding ceremony. It can vary from no residency required, to a number of months.

Did you know? In Italy confetti is believed to represent good fortune, so be sure to bring plenty to throw at the newlyweds as they exit the church!

Residency is not to be confused with ‘waiting period’. This refers to the time period between notifying the church/town hall/venue of your intention to marry, and the ceremony taking place. ‘Know Before You Go’ will equip you with all the essential facts you need to start planning for the most important journey of your life. We compiled this guide by doing direct research with the embassies of the countries included in the section. With a little planning, you and your groom could soon be jetting off and enjoying the wedding of your dreams! This section should be treated as a guide, rather than definitive legal advice. Marriage laws are subject to change. This guide assumes that both parties in the couple are British or European citizens. Please seek further advice on documentation and other requirements from the embassy and local registry office of the country you are travelling to. For further info, visit gov. uk/marriage-abroad. Medical and legal advice can be found at fitfortravel.nhs.uk and solicitors.lawsociety.org.uk.
