SPARK AT DWI G H T S C HOOL L ON D ON

Welcome to Dwight School London, where we are dedicated to crafting a personalised journey for every student, which we call “igniting the spark of genius in every child.” A member of the world-renowned Dwight global family of schools, we share the same commitment to personalising education which began nearly 150 years ago when Dwight was founded in 1872 in New York. Our students are encouraged to pursue their passions, believe in their own talents and celebrate and learn from the perspectives of others. They are also inspired to take intellectual risks through the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum — a pathway to top universities worldwide — nurturing creative critical thinkers empowered to help make our world a better place. We invite you to visit us to see our school’s warm, engaging environment and experience our spark of genius philosophy in action.

MISSION & PILLARS Dwight School London prepares young people to become innovative global leaders. Through the academic breadth and depth of the IB, we nurture inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better, more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Our school rests on three pillars: Personalised learning: Customising an education for every student We pride ourselves on getting to know each of our students and their families quite well. We shape the learning journey around how students best learn, where their skills lie, and what sparks their interest. Community: Encouraging students to contribute to their school and wider communities Through service learning, we foster every student’s ability to make a positive difference to our school, among neighbours, and in the world beyond. Global vision: Educating global leaders With students from around the world, Dwight is a culturally and socially rich and diverse school. We nurture learning within our own international community, the IB’s larger global context and our network of Dwight Schools across continents.

ARTS

The arts are integral to a Dwight education and we offer students a great variety of activities in which to create, express themselves, find their sparks of genius and flourish. Visual Arts Students are encouraged to discover their own unique view of the world and the skills to express it. They explore the full range of media, including architectural drawing, collage, drawing, painting, multimedia, photography, printmaking, sculpture, installations and film making. Through gallery visits, students learn and experience art as consumers. Our art room is fully resourced with the latest equipment and technology, where pupils are sure to find their artistic inspiration. To see some student art galleries, visit dwightlondon.org/arts Music We offer a great variety of musical activities for students, from ensembles like the rock band, chamber group and jazz ensemble, to our annual Choir Festival in London and concerts in New York’s Carnegie Hall. Lower and Upper School students develop their talents, skills and knowledge through individual lessons in a wide variety of instruments and ensemble coaching through our Music Conservatory Programme during school hours and on Saturdays. For students who wish to gain extra qualifications in music and drama, we offer individual LAMDA (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) tuition through our fully qualified LAMDA specialist. To learn more, visit dwightlondon.org/music

For further inspiration, drama students frequently visit The Globe, The National Theatre, The Barbican and West End theatres. Diploma students also attend the annual International Schools Theatre Association workshop to collaborate with artists and students from around the world. To watch a sample of our plays, visit dwightlondon.org/drama Film Students with a passion for film can join our Film School weekly workshops to develop their film scripts and shoot their short films with industry-standard equipment. They learn how to light scenes, frame shots, record sound, direct and edit. They have the privilege of seeing their final cuts premiere on the big screen at The Curzon Cinema in central London. To see our students producing their films, visit dwightlondon.org/filmschool

ARTS

Drama Students learn about theatre arts both on and behind the stage, developing a wide range of creative and technical skills. They play a significant role in writing, producing, staging and performing productions ranging from Shakespeare, Commedia dell’Arte and interpretations of Chekov to Broadway musicals, mysteries and much more.

SPORTS & WELL-BEING Through a wide range of sports, we develop and extend students’ skills while affording them a chance to experience as many different sports as possible to fuel their athletic sparks of genius. Inter-school athletics are an important part of our culture. With training and a high level of coaching, students compete in regional leagues in London as well as nationally and internationally. Our own sporting facilities are fully equipped with a large field and multi-use gaming area, which hosts our Physical and Health Education (PHE) lessons, extra-curricular activities and team training. Some of the sports our students enjoy are: Badminton Dance Baseball Football Basketball Gymnastics Cricket Hockey

Martial arts Netball Rugby Softball

Swimming Tennis Volleyball

We also encourage students to pursue sports outside of school and recommend clubs and activities to those who wish to participate within the local community or at higher competitive standard.

When new students join us, we help each one feel welcome and comfortable by carefully matching them with a buddy to learn their way around and quickly feel like a member of our school community. Our House System, spanning Lower and Upper Schools, engages students in collaborative activities that forge community bonds and help students develop the skills, attitudes and behaviours needed to enjoy successful personal and professional lives. Upper School students also participate in vertical tutoring groups so they can socialise across years and start each day with discussions of interest. We provide English language support, as well as assistance to help students with different learning styles succeed through our Quest Programme, further personalising the educational experience for every student.

SPORTS & WELL-BEING

Well-being Dwight School London is committed to safeguarding and promoting the emotional, social and physical well-being of all our students.

ACTION

TAKING

Our school community is passionate about taking positive action and invested in making a difference in the local and global worlds beyond our campus.

Service learning is an integral part of all IB Programmes, emphasising the development of community awareness and concern, a sense of responsibility and the skills and attitudes needed to make effective contributions to society. Action frequently stems from our wonderful classroom work, and takes numerous forms to help and support others and their environments. Examples include students visiting a local care home regularly, adopting a gorilla, as well as raising awareness and money to pay for a guide dog and for an interactive isolation booth to foster empathy for cancer patients.
