AUTUMN 2019 AT DWIGHT

Dear Dwight Community, Welcome to the first edition of our termly review of life at Dwight. As I reflect on a typically exciting and vibrant start to the school year, I am impressed with the vast array of learning opportunities that are available to our children. I am proud and humbled by their curiosity and confidence in embracing these opportunities and working with each other, supported by our dedicated staff team, to take their learning in new directions. From the children in kindergarten, through to the young adults in the diploma programme I am always heartened to see the IB learner profile in action in our students caring, principled and open-minded learners who seek to make the world a better and more peaceful place. I hope you enjoy discovering a bit more about our inspiring students and the vibrant life of Dwight School London in this term’s magazine. Warm regards Alison Cobbin Head of Dwight School London

We were very excited to welcome fellow students from Dwight New York, Dwight Qibao (Shanghai), Dwight Seoul, Dwight Dubai and a group from the 'Kรถnigin-Luise-Schule' in Berlin, Germany for this musical extravaganza. A sellout crowd heard Beatles classics like Yellow Submarine and Come Together.

Herbie's Renaissance Rondeau

Herbie came in 2nd place in the competition and won the category of ‘best poem by a 10-year-old’! The judges said how brilliant his reading was and were blown away at the vocabulary in his poem. Herbie was a real risk-taker and an excellent communicator when both writing and sharing his poem with a wider audience, and we are all very proud of his efforts.

Herbie Wares' POEM: Renaissance Rondeau A choir sings Monteverdi, The sound echoes back as T30*. With a flat roof, the voices ring clear, A dome makes them bounce by the chandelier In a church or monastery. Best proportions express harmony: Echo notes both piano and forte. Ratios pleasing to see and hear, When a choir sings. World and water become spheres readily, Saw Renaissance architect Alberti. Perfect shapes delight eye and ears Like Greek theatres where sound was sharp as spears, From ancient times to seventeen-thirty Maths sails in the air, where a choir sings.

Technology Boost in the Makerspace Room

We have been upgrading and promoting our Lower School Makerspace room over the last few weeks. The Makerspace room is next to our Year 5 classroom. It is often used as a breakout room for small groups and their teachers. It now has a dual purpose as it is set up to accommodate several features of technology including a green wall for videoing, a lego wall for sharing models, a section on stop motion animation, a virtual reality section for writing and recording VR and we even have a 360 camera. All of these tools can help our students uncover ideas, work collaboratively and creatively. I'm sure many more classes will want to spend more time in our Makerspace room!

Gnome Alone

This year's early years festive play was the story of a young gnome who keeps getting overlooked by Santa when he needs help with some jobs. Eventually Norman the Gnome's persistence pays off and he gets the job of helping Santa pack presents on his sleigh. Here we see some of the cast before the play is about to start.

DPA Out and About events The Dwight Parent Association is our volunteer parent organisation that provides a focal point for the school community. The Out and About events are a great way to see various sights across London while making some new friends. This term the group visited Kew Gardens, the Museum of Brands, the Beefeater Gin Distillery Tour and had an end of term dinner. If you'd like to know about future events then email Michele O'Neill on michele@seanoneill.com.

A visit to the Tate Gallery You may know that last year Steve McQueen photographed more than 75,000 Year 3 children across London's schools for his latest exhibition. The project aims to be a visual snapshot of people in the city and was inspired after the Turner Prize-winning artist looked at his own 1977 class photo. Our Year 3 Dwight students (now year 4) took part last year and visited the exhibition. The photos are being showcased on billboards by roads, railways and train stations across London.

An evening of global food and performances

International Mindedness is central to the identity of Dwight London and our mission includes empowering our students to be global citizens. At Dwight we are blessed with a rich international community that spans over 50 nationalities. Spending time together and learning about each other’s cultures is a significant factor in our children developing intercultural understanding and respect.

We celebrate the vibrant international diversity of our community every day, in our conversations, our friendships, our languages and our perspectives. Another great way (and perhaps our favourite) is through this great DPA event where we celebrate food and music from across the world.

The Sky’s the Limit

for students in Year 5

Year 5 have been working hard on their space unit this half term and it culminated in presenting their learning via an Exhibition. They copied the style of the Year 6 Exhibition- inviting in their peers for the morning and then their parents in the afternoon. Everyone that attended noted the hard work and reflective learning that had taken place. The Year 5 students shared their learning with confidence. Maciej and Elliott shared their work on space junk and the problems of floating items in space. Thea recapped the stories of the many animals that have been in space including mice, flies, monkeys, rabbits and dogs. Tess had an activity that demonstrated what life was like on the International Space Station, and Nathan utilised VR (virtual reality) to show some of the features of black holes. Well done year 5!

Dwight Students Take Part In Climate Change Strikes

The UN Climate Summit was held in New York City on September 23rd, 2019. In advance of this important event, there was a Climate Strike, including a march and a rally, on September 20th in London. A few of our students have been directly involved in the UK Student Climate Network. In the Upper School we made the decision to authorise absences for students who wanted to use their voice and take a stand to bring to light the significance of this issue. It has been wonderful to see Dwight students taking the lead on this important conversation, and it is one that further unites us with our other Global Campuses.

M5 students visited The House of Dreams Museum. The English Language and Literature unit is focused on marginalisation and social conventions, and so the purpose of the trip was to provide the opportunity for students to view unconventional art and speak to an artist about his perspective on how art brings beauty to this world.

Young Designers

Alma and Drake in M5 entered a competition to 'Design a Building of the Future' and they ended up as the National Design Winners! One of their prizes was to visit the BRE Innovation Park in Watford, Hertfordshire. During the visit they had the chance to experience how we will be living in 10-20 years from now. There was a focus on homes with sustainability in mind and this included: collecting rain and air-conditioning water waste to flush our toilets; innovative brick designs and material choices to insulate and re-heat our homes. It was a great insight into future living, not just in the UK but around the world.

Our House Captains had designed a series of brain busters to challenge the brilliant minds of our students in the fields of sport, maths, history, art/culture, geography and London! The knowledge on show was incredible and teams were fully engaged while battling for the coveted title of House Quiz Champions 2019. In a tense battle that came down to the flag identification round it was The Artists who came out on top - huge congratulations to the winning House!
