Standing on the shoulders of giants
When a brand like Dwyers & Co is approaching its 200th year, it’s time to dig a little deeper into the history of how a brand can survive for so long.
Dwyers & Co was founded in 1820 by James Dwyer in Cork, Ireland. To put it into context the brand was started 25 years before the Great Irish Famine and 40 years before the American Civil War. James opened a haberdashery shop on Great Georges Street in the city that year, selling all kinds of clothing and household products. The company went on to become one of the largest manufacturing companies in the region. Brothers Alan and Peter Dwyer, together with their team, now own and manage the Dwyers & Co brand. Early Irish and British clothing manufacturing was based on the cottage industry where individuals made small amounts of clothing in their own homes. Around the middle of the 19th century a series of inventions led to mechanized stitching operations and the birth of the modern clothing industry followed rapidly. The productivity gains, over traditional methods, were in the order of 500 700%, yet the new methods also led to an extraordinary improvement in both quality and consistency.
We spoke to Marketing Director, Peter Dwyer about the brand. “Dating back to my great, great, great Grandfather my family have been involved in clothing in Cork City. We have a special connection with the rag trade and with Cork, we are very proud of our heritage. Almost 200 years ago James Dwyer, who was a dairy farmer in County Tipperary, decided a change was needed so he walked his cattle south to Cork, where he believed he would get a better price for his herd. James sold his herd (getting a better price) and set up the Dwyers business in Cork City. To this day, we are still based in Cork. It is a pretty special city, situated on the south coast of Ireland. The city charter dates back over 800 years and Cork has seen many different ages come and go. It has always been a trading city based on the river Lee. Recently it was awarded European Capital of Culture as well as being voted one of the Top 10 cities in the world to visit”
The company has a proud tradition in Cork designing and selling clothing for almost 200 years
It is difficult to imagine just how active and important the clothing industry was in Ireland so long ago. Dwyers & Co went from strength to strength and at the height of its power the company employed nearly 3,000 people in Cork.
Dwyers & Co is the only original Cork clothing brand of the hundreds that began so long ago still in existence. Still a family owned business. Alan and Peters’ father, George Dwyer was very influential in their careers and both brothers worked with and under him for many years. Dwyers & Co no longer manufacture in Cork, however all design, wholesale and distribution of the brand across the globe is still based less than 1 mile from the original site where James started all that time ago. ‘Quality materials, quality customer service and a quality end product for our customers to enjoy- that’s what is important. After all, we have a reputation to keep, a reputation nearly 200 years old!’ says Dwyer and you tend to believe him.
5 simple points to improve your game By Charles Casson. Golf fitness. These are two words some might not believe go together but golf fitness is important for those who truly want to improve their game and their physical wellbeing. Paying attention to golf fitness will improve your game. Here are five simple health tips which will improve your golf fitness and performance: Drink lots of water even before you leave home. Try to drink 2 pints of water before you play. This will help your muscles performance. Dehydration can cause energy loss, lack of focus and concentration. And remember, that’s before you even get to the course. Once there, you should be drinking water at every hole. Eat well before you play. Most golfers either don’t eat before they play or they eat something that is not going to give them the energy they’ll need. An example of a good breakfast would be a bowl of porridge or eggs with a piece of fruit or juice. For lunch, a brown bread chicken and lettuce sandwich with a piece of fruit. These types of combinations will provide you with the best sources of energy for 18 holes and more. Warm up before you hit your first ball. We all see so many golfers who show up five minutes before their tee time and head to the first tee. A better option is to arrive at least 20 minutes before you play. First do some movement stretches. Things like arm circles, toe
touches, etc. This will help prepare your body to play and perform. Then take some half swings with a 7-iron. After that, you’re ready to hit some wedges. All these movements will help your muscles warm up. Eat a little while you play. Bring little snacks with you on the course to eat every 6 holeslike fruit and nutrition bars. When you feed your body with the proper nutrients your energy levels stay balanced. Better for the entire round not just the front nine. Stretch while you play. You will be constantly moving your body and stretching your joints while you play anyway, but do some little warm ups in-between every hole. Try this simple technique: Standing Twist with Club: Hold your club chest high, arms straight out in front, with grip shoulder-width apart. While keeping feet and hips fairly stable, rotate club to the right (as in photo) and then the left. Try to breathe out on every turn to release tension. Most of these tips are common sense and you may have been aware of them. But if you do all of them, your golf fitness will improve along with your game performance. If you try these five simple steps and you like how you feel, you should do it every time you play.
