THE recycling of ‘e-waste’ will soon bring in a sustainable income for eight disabled men at Jabulani Rehabilitation Centre near Empangeni. This is the vision of non-governmental (NGO) organisation Zululand Centre for Sustainable Development (ZCSD), which has been on the lookout for a suitable project for the men for some months. ‘E-waste’ refers to all discarded electrical or electronic devices. This includes everything from computers to power tools and home appliances. The items must first be stripped and separated into differenct categories before they can be recycled. The men recently received training from ZCSD’s Steve Woods on how to dismantle ewaste for recycling purposes. ‘There is a market for 90% of the e-waste generated,’ said ZCSD public relations officer Dylan van den Bosch ‘The group will be able to sell some of the more valuable parts and stockpile the aluminium, metal and plastic until there is enough to sell to a recycler.’ ZCSD’s managing director Gavin Eichler is a member of the Institute of Waste Management and the NGO hopes to soon have the project listed with the E-waste Association and listed on their website.

Drop off zone take your e-waste to 5 Fourth Street, Empangeni

The recycling business provides an important service to the community by creating a way for Zululanders to dispose of their ewaste safely, and in an environmentally friendly manner, and at the same time it creates some much needed jobs for the disabled. The e-waste drop-off site is at 5 Fourth Street, Empangeni (just opposite Empangeni Cash and Carry). ‘If people have large amounts of e-waste we can also arrange for it to be collected,’ said Van den Bosch. For more information, phone ZCSD on 083 9551348.

Youth no-show leaves CPF stranded Megan Erasmus QUESTIONS of commitment were raised at the Empangeni Community Policing Forum (CPF) on Tuesday evening, when all five members of the newly elected CPF Youth Desk failed to appear for their first meeting. The Youth desk has also failed to meet the municipality and the CPF executive committee for the region since their election on 15 May 2012. None of the elected members had made apologies, given any reason for their absence, or even made contact with the CPF executive committee. Empangeni CPF Chairman Zilindile Masango, who said he had made many attempts to contact all five members, said at the meeting that it was cause for great concern that the members seemed only to care for their nom-

ination as a matter of status, rather than as part of efforts to reduce crime. The Zululand Observer also tried to contact the Empangeni CPF Youth Desk Chairperson Kheto Nxumalo, but to no avail. One resident who did attend the meeting at the Empangeni Civic Centre told the Zululand Observer they were disappointed in the turnout of the Empangeni community at large. ‘Every month we have these meetings, and every month there are only a handful of residents that attend. ‘Yet, at the same time, these same residents still sit and complain about crime and the state of our country, but they are too lazy to do anything about it. It is just sickening.’ The next CPF meeting will take place at 5.30pm on Tuesday 17 July at the Empangeni Civic Centre.
